The Grove-based club event attracted more than 90 competitors for seven events at Boings on 13th Beach. Saturday provided the best of the waves, the highlight of which was the retro – pre-1980 short boards division. The new kitchen rules A BUNCH of Ocean Grove friends have taken the home entertaining idea a step further – running their own version of My Kitchen Rules during the winter months. The group of friends formed five teams of two and each team has taken a turn in playing host to the others over the chilly months. And just like the Channel 7 show hosted by celebrity chefs Manu Feildel and Pete Evans, the teams secretly vote on each other, with the winners announced after everyone has taken a turn. Four of those teams live in Ocean Grove, the other one used to live in Ocean Grove and now lives in Cobden. “We just thought it would be something fun to do in the winter months,” said Kylie Dalton who came up with the idea. “Every fortnight we go to a different house,” Kylie explained, while putting the finishing touches to an Asian banquet at her Grove home in Asbury Street. “The rules are; firstly, it has to be at least a three course meal, secondly, that there is nothing pre-made, and thirdly, if you burn it, stuff it.” Half of those ‘competing’ grew up together, some went to kinder together. “They’ve been friends

for at least 20 years”, Kylie said, confident that the results wouldn’t affect their closeness. “It is all about having some fun,” she said. Last weekend the couples were due to visit Jodie and Adam Collins in Cobden. Former Grover Jodie said: “It’s rare for a good group of friends to be friends 25 years down the track.” Other themes for the dinner nights have included

Rockwiz, My Inner Child, Multicultural and 70s themes. The evenings have proven a great family event with the children of the teams even mixing up their own desserts. The teams will now organise a dinner out together and open up sealed envelopes to reveal the winner. The result will be published in a future edition of the Voice.

Vandals leave their mark POLICE are appealing for information on vandals who daubed graffiti on Ocean Grove walls and buildings some time last week. The spraying of the words ‘Dr Brown’ on the side of Parade and Hodgson Street shops and walls has left police baffled and they are hoping locals can help them catch the culprits.

EYESORE: Vandals defaced more than one building.

Leading Senior Constable Judd Joseph said the attack was rare in the town and the name Dr Brown has so far proven a mystery.

“We do not have a lot of graffiti in the area so we are hoping someone might come forward with some information on whoever has done this.”

Anyone with any information about the vandalism should please phone Leading Sen Constabler Joseph on 5256 2698.

RESIDENTS are invited to an information session about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia on Friday, September 23. The talk is part of Dementia Awareness Week and is for anyone who would like more information about the condition for themselves or others. David Hooker from Alzheimer’s Australia will be on hand for the presentation and to answer any questions. The session will be held at the Ocean Grove Golf Club from 12.30-1:30pm. Gas leak closes street WISHFISH

GIFT & HOME

RESIDENTS ould smell gas across the river in Ocean Grove after CFA and police were called to a gas pipe leak in Barwon Heads. Construction workers hit the natural gas line about 12.45pm on Thursday, September 8, and it caused a major leak. No one was injured. Acting Sergeant Rosie Smith from the Bellarine Police Station said the area was closed for about two hours while the leak was

brought under control (pictured right). “It was a significant leak but there were no major interruptions to the town,” she said. Ozone Road resident Simone Clarke said she and her young son were watching the workers at the construction site when the gas line was hit. “I was with my young son and we walked up to see the diggers in action when the guy hit the pipe and jumped off, no one was hurt but they

all jumped back and kind of went ‘whoa’,” she said. Barwon Heads only received its first natural gas line to the town in 2007. • Ocean Grove CFA attended a number of call outs recently. These included a car fire in Wallington (pictured below) and activated alarms in Queenscliff.

BEAUTIFUL LIFE: Amy Lew Kong will turn 100 years old next month.

AMY Elizabeth Lew Kong was born in Boat Harbour, Tasmania, on October 10, 1911. She was the seventh of 12 children born to pioneer farming parents. Amy, as did several of her siblings, crossed the Tasman Sea during the 1930s to settle on the mainland. Few could have foreseen the experiences and influence this quiet, partially deaf child would have on those she met during her life. On, Sunday October 9th many of these people will gather in the Ocean Grove Uniting Church Hall to congratulate wish Amy on her 100th birthday for the following day. Amy met her future husband, pilot Bill Kong at a Saturday night dance. In 1947 they married and as well as caring for Bill’s two daughters from a previous marriage, Amy became his main, often only assistant, in bakeries in Colbinabbin, Minyip, Violet Town, Warracknabeal and Moama, and a milkbar in North Melbourne. Following the birth of their daughter Elizabeth, in Warracknabeal, Amy and Bill moved to Ocean Grove where for many

years they operated a bakery/ milkbar Their son Allen was born during this period. Then, following a period as bakers in Moama, the family returned to their home in Dare Street, Ocean Grove. For the first time in her married life Amy had time for leisure. Time to enjoy caring for her children, reading, sewing, knitting and gardening. In the early eighties Amy and Bill moved to Clifton Springs where daughter Elizabeth and husband Terry had settled. Amy, together with Bill, became part of their three grandsons’ lives and Amy discovered a new skill and passion, lawn bowls. Age never deterred Amy. In her 70s she accompanied a friend overseas. Thus she fulfilled her dream to travel abroad. And throughout the years she relives with delight her travels in the United Kingdom and Europe. Quiet, retiring and often selfeffacing Amy’s acute observations and interpretations of the many experiences she has had during her long life reveal her deep understanding of people.

Telstra Foundation makes the difference for Geelong and Surf Coast junior clubs By duane dalton

Five Geelong and Surf Coast organisations have all received a $1,200 Telstra’s Kids Fund grant, which will help to develop and enhance the talents, skills and enjoyment of their students and club members. Successful recipients of the grant include Hamlyn Banks Primary School, St Patrick’s Primary School, Rix Street Kindergarten, Corio Bay Stingrays Basketball Club and Leopold Netball Club. Leopold Netball Club will be using the funds to provide their juniors with brand new netball uniforms. Director of Leopold Netball Club, Daryl Allwright, said “Our girls are really excited about getting their new netball uniforms! The grant also frees up funding that we can use to improve the facilities of our club and purchase new equipment to develop our junior players.” Telstra Foundation programs such as Telstra’s Kids Fund aim to support the best assets our communities have – our children and their future. We hope that through these grants they will form a genuine and positive connection with the Geelong

and Surf Coast community. We also, hope that Telstra’s Kids Fund grants can help add to the energy and vitality of grass roots organisations such as the Leopold Netball Club and in doing so we can assist in getting the most out of their junior players and help them realise their potential. Over a number of years schools, sporting clubs, hospitals

and childcare centres are some of the organisations that have benefited from Telstra’s Kids Fund, with funds going towards anything from musical equipment to building upgrades and sporting equipment. Seniors explore new world of communication Geelong and Surf Coast seniors had the opportunity to explore a whole new world of communication as part of the recent Telstra Connected Seniors sessions in July. Hosted by ‘The Gadget Guy’, Peter Blasina, the workshops taught seniors everything from how to surf the ‘net, send text messages to family and friends

to take photos with their mobile phones. The workshops have been designed to cater to all levels of experience to make sure all seniors can get the most out of the technology available to them. Students from St Joseph’s College and Sacred Heart College volunteered their time to show the seniors how to store

important contact details for emergencies, send emails, access the Internet and also answered questions seniors had about their specific mobile phones. MORE than 200 objectors have said no to plans for a chicken broiler farm in Wallington. An Indented Head businessman is applying for permission to develop a 330-plus chicken farm off Curlewis Road, Wallington. However, local objectors, which include the newly formed Bellarine Guardians, claim it would lead to unacceptable odours, noise and traffic which would affect local living conditions and the local tourism and hospitality industry. The formal object period ended on September 10 but submissions can be made up until the final decision is made. The decision date is yet to be confirmed. Earlier in the month more than 120 people turned out for a public meeting at Wallington Adventure Park to object to the proposal.

Fox worry at wetlands OCEAN Grove residents are concerned for native black swans in the Begola Wetlands after seeing a fox. Residents who live around the Collendina wetlands have reported this year’s cygnets have gone missing, within one week of hatching in the wetlands. John Corlett lives on Emperor Drive, which backs onto the wetlands, and said every year he looked out for the young swans. He and fellow neighbours are part of the Friends of the Begola Wetlands group. “All of our neighbours are always interested in watching

them,” he said. “Generally three to four of them survive and we watch them grow up and fly away.” John said this year’s eggs only hatched last week “This year we only saw them for a day and then they were gone; we talked to one of our neighbours and somebody said they had seen a fox.” John reported the fox to Geelong council. A City spokeswoman said fox control in urban areas was a difficult task due to the issues associated with baiting in built-up areas. “The city is part of a wider

Push to bolster member base THE Ocean Grove Nature Reserve has a new number one friend after this year’s Annual General Meeting. The Friends of Ocean Grove Nature Reserve committee has a new president in six-year veteran Fiona Topolcsanyi, who replaced outgoing president Chris Pitfield. Fiona said last month’s AGM was held around an informal planting day and meeting to decide on the new committee. “I didn’t think anyone else would put their hand up, so it was my turn to take the role,” she said. Fiona said the group’s first focus would be the nature reserve’s open day, to be held on Sunday, October 23. “This year is 40 years since the nature reserve has been open to the public,” she said. To celebrate the milestone the group is holding a photographic competition to be displayed at the open day. Budding photographers are encouraged to walk around the reserve and take a photo of their favourite place. “I’m hoping some old photos will come out of the woodwork so hopefully we’ll get a mix of old and

new and then they will be displayed as a collage at the info centre,” Fiona said. The committee’s long term plan for 2011 is looking at how to preserve and improve the nature reserve during the next decade. “Outgoing president Chris is really working on holding a native vegetation workshop think-tank … with experts walking around the reserve to nut out a 10year plan for the reserve,” she said. “We’ll assess the nature reserve to figure out what needs to be done and what the priorities are.” As president, Fiona said she would focus on improving the reserve’s information centre. “My thing I’ve always been into is the information centre, over the years we have put in new signs … so it’s better than it was and we have great volunteers,” she said. The information centre is open every weekend from 10am to 3pm and gives visitors and school groups a chance to learn about the flora and fauna in the reserve. “It’s really aimed at kids, they love the skulls and feathers and it would be

great to get more things for the kids to touch and feel,” Fiona said. As for preserving the future of the group, Fiona said it was about encouraging a more active membership base.

“We’ve put in a grant to not just expose the nature reserve but to expose Friends of the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve and encourage a more active membership,” she said. “One of the great things about the nature

reserve is that people can get involved in any way they can, whatever their inclination.” To enter the photo competition email friends. oceangrove.naturereserve@ gmail.com

A unique piece of Ocean Grove OCEAN Grove’s prized Nature Reserve is this year celebrating its 40th year open to the public. Locals may not be aware that the 143 hectare site, just 2km from The Terrace, has a long history with many people campaigning for its preservation. Friends of the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve archivist Dianne Jones has spent several years researching and compiling a history of the reserve. The unique area of native

vegetation on the Bellarine Peninsula was originally owned by the Cuthbertson family from the 1850s. Dianna said the Cuthbertson sisters stated in their wills their wish for the land to be preserved and after leaving the property in the early 1960s, the 2.6 square kilometres of bush-land was put up for sale. “The Geelong Field Naturalists were inspired by their wish and campaigned to purchase the land,” she said.

The club’s president Jack Wheeler helped initiate the reserve’s first committee group in October 1962 in an attempt to purchase the property and turn it into a reserve. Enough money was raised to buy about quarter of the land at $108 per 0.4 hectares. “There was a lot of community enthusiasm from various groups, schools and businesses to raise the money to buy the land,” Dianne said. The original reserve was

only 81 hectares and was listed as Crown Land in 1968. In 1971 the reserve was opened to the public and another 62 hectares adjacent to Grubb Road were bought in 1973 to expand and offset the loss of flora and fauna caused by fires, track clearing and pest plants. The newer eastern block of land had been previously used for farming and required planting and development to bring it into line with the original land.

Life quality the key Charity Mega Swim planned FROM PAGE 1

“We’re hoping to involve the general public, surf life saving clubs and swimming teams; anybody can join up.” The Bellarine Mega Swim will be the first of its kind held in Ocean Grove and is run as a competition with points awarded to teams for money raised and metres swum. Rotary is hoping the event will raise more than $15,000 through sponsorship and donations from the community. MS is a disease of the central nervous system and affects more than 20,000 people in Australia. There is no known cure for MS, however MS Australia’s financial support programs

like Go For Gold, can help ease the strain for sufferers. Melbourne woman Carol Cooke, who was diagnosed with MS in 1998, organised the first 24-Hour Mega Swim in 2001. “This is a great chance for local businesses, schools,

swimming and sporting clubs to get involved in a fun and rewarding event that delivers enormous benefit to Victorians living with MS,” she said. To donate or enter a team visit www.megaswim. com or phone 0414 344 847 or 0419 895 562.

Money helps artist THE Bellarine Mega Swim will help raise money for MS Australia; not for research but to help improve the dayto-day life of people with multiple sclerosis. The MS Australia Go For Gold scholarship goes that step further and gives people the opportunity to take a step towards a dream whether it be for education, employment, travel, sport or arts projects. One of Ocean Grove’s favourite musicians, BreeArne Chamley, was last year given one of those rare opportunities. As a 2010 recipient, BreeArne was awarded a $5000 scholarship to further her musical career and release an album of original songs. Bree-Arne said she received one of the largest

amounts of money awarded in the scholarships in 2010. “I was one of two people with the highest paid scholarships and was given $5000 to put towards an Apple Mac and time in the studio to record my album,” she said. The 25-year- old said the money allowed her to record 28 original songs and release an album, something she would have otherwise been unable to do. “It’s taken two years and has been an ongoing process … I would never have even thought of making it into a massive album,” she said. With all the ongoing support she receives from MS Australia, Bree-Arne said she was told about the scholarship from one of her regular appointments.

MAKING MUSIC: Bree-Arne Chamley has recorded an album with her scholarship funds.

schools

Delegates have a say BELLARINE Secondary College students got a taste of international diplomacy last week after hosting their second Model United Nations conference. A dozen senior students from the school were part of a 70-student contingent from eight Geelong schools to discuss the topic The Future of Indigenous Peoples: Rights, Recognitions and Respect. The students represented 25 different countries and had to research and present an argument in line with their chosen country’s opinions and viewpoints. Bellarine Secondary College teacher Cheryl Linford said the college was given four

countries to represent in its debate. “We are representing Argentina, the Russian Federation, Australia and Laos,” she said. Cheryl said the school was hosting the conference for the second year in a row, something that was usually not done but spurred by the students’ enthusiasm. “It encourages students to tune into the rest of the world … the students loved it last year,” she said. The Model UN Conference is run by the UN Association of Australia and helps demonstrate the UN set up and decision-making process.

POLITICAL AGENDA: Students from all over Geelong attended the Model UN Conference.

Show a hit for school’s budding artists STAR of the Sea Primary School recently held an art show. The show featured the work of students in various year levels and were produced through a variety of mediums. Parents and friends flocked to the school to see the pupil’s work on display.

Action aplenty at Youthfest BELLARINE Secondary College’s 2011 Youthfest was a roaring success, bringing local students and the community together to go global. Presidents of Bellarine’s student government, Kate Preston and Blaise White had been at school since 5am to set up the free festival for about 1500 students from Bellarine and the Geelong region. “It’s been a crazy, hectic day but it’s been amazing,” said Kate. Students were treated

to live music acts, workshops, a film festival, henna and belly dancing, rides, games and international food, all centred round the festival’s theme, Youthfest Goes Global. Police and community groups also had displays to interact with the students in a fun atmosphere. The students agreed that one of the most popular events was the Queenscliff Music Festival showcase that hosted The Red Eyes, Jordie Lane, Sweethearts and

Kate said the theme related to the promotion of multicultural awareness and diversity throughout the school. “Youthfest Goes Global incorporates different cultures from around the world and shows that ultimately we are the same,” she said.

environment

Help needed at bay THE Swan Bay Environment Association is holding a planting day on the Bellarine Rail Trail and outdoor lovers are encouraged to lend a hand. The revegetation event will start at 10.30am Fellows Road, Point Lonsdale on Wednesday, September 21. A free barbecue lunch, refreshments, sunscreen, insect repellent and water will all be provided. The association recognises the importance of Swan Bay as a wetland of national importance and is actively working to ensure the area remains in an unspoilt state. The association encourages passive recreational and educational use of the bay and is actively involved in a unique network with other volunteer groups and agencies whose broader role is to protect Swan Bay through community education and facilitation of on-ground works on both private and public lands. A REAL BEAUTY: The white-faced heron is found throughout most of Australia and Tasmania.

Heron is a shy guy I SPOTTED this lovely white-faced heron resting in the Bonnyvale Wetlands during the week. These birds are commonly seen in Ocean Grove, at the Boat Ramp, around Lake Connewarre, at Blue Waters Lake, and even on the beach. They are sometimes alone or in a small flock. The white-faced heron is found throughout most of Australia and Tasmania (except the really dry

regions), and also in New Guinea, Indonesia and New Zealand. The white-faced heron is found in many habitats, namely fresh and salty wetlands, farm dams, pastures, grasslands, crops, beaches, boat-harbours, golf courses, orchards and even in garden fish-ponds. In other words they are found where-ever there is a good water supply. The white-faced heron is

relatively small compared to other herons (60-70cms), with pale blue-grey feathers. The forehead, chin and throat are white. The eye colour varies between grey, green, or dull yellow. The beak is black and often pale grey at the base, and the legs are yellow. Like other herons, during the breeding season pinkishbrown plumes (large feathers) appear on the neck and breast, and blue-grey

plumes appear on the back. The white-faced heron feeds on a wide variety of prey, including fish, insects and amphibians. They sometimes stand in the water and catch fish in the shallows. Herons look very graceful when they take flight, and as they are very nervous birds they take flight whenever they see me with my camera. By JENNIFER CARR

School rocks SURFSIDE Primary School celebrated all types of art last week to showcase their talented students to friends and family. Each year level held a special performance, music students busked during intervals and the halls were turned into

visual art galleries. There was even an Indonesian puppet theatre. Surfside teachers said the school was packed with people eager to see what their children had been up to during their visual art and music lessons through the year.

Marine program always a big hit OCEAN Grove kids at a loss of how to spend their school holidays have the opportunity to learn about local marine life. The Queenscliff Marine Discovery Centre’s spring holiday program allows children of all ages to connect with the sun, salt and sand from September 26 to October 7. Activities run most days and include rockpool rambles, coastal

photography, fishing and canoeing with prices ranging from free to $30 per person. Ocean Grover and Marine Discovery Centre education officer Anne McLaughlin said the sessions were based around safety and education messages. “We take families out to the rock pools and teach them about what to touch and what not to touch so they know for the future when they go back themselves,”

she said. “(The sessions) are a great opportunity to have someone take you through a world you might not be familiar with.”

The Queenscliff Marine Discovery Centre is open from 10am to 4pm from Monday, September 26, until Friday, October 7, for the school holidays.

Stairway to heaven SHED Zeppelin is a sixpiece 70s rock band that plays the Led Zeppelin Songbook. From rocking classics like Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love and Black Dog to more obscure material such as Bron y aur and Kashmir, Shed Zeppelin plays with passion and a great sense of fun. Back in winter 2008 Barwon Heads resident James Hurley (guitar) met fellow local musician Tim Crawford (guitar, mandolin, keyboards) and jammed to a few Zep tunes. A search for others to form a band resulted

in regular gigging with musicians and fellow Barwon Heads residents John Crosgrove (bass) and Chris Crook (drums). Together they quickly came to share the passion of Zeppelin’s music with the other members. Shed Zeppelin made its debut at The Piping Hot Chicken Shop in Ocean Grove winter 2009 to great acclaim. A change in the original lineup has brought Melbourne front man Andrew “Simmo” Simpson to centre stage. Simmo’s performance reflects his intimate knowledge of the music

and brings an authenticity and stage presence strongly reminiscent of Zeppelin’s Robert Plant. Occasional guest artists include Barwon Heads girl Ros Crook (backing vocals), whilst Melbourne-based harmonica master Justin Brady brings the house down with a stunning rendition of the classic Delta blues number

When the levee breaks. The band faithfully reproduces all the classic rock songs together with less well known tunes such as the acoustic Bron yr Aur, Going To California, Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, the eastern influenced Kashmir, British blues classic Since I’ve Been Loving You, and the orchestral Rain song.

The band continues to expand its repertoire allowing it to match song lists for any given occasion. As was the case with Led Zeppelin’s live performances, an acoustic set regularly features. And yes, they do play Stairway To Heaven. Shed Zeppelin is playing at The Piping Hot Chicke n Shop on October 15.

Wines earn praise ALL at Jack Rabbit Vineyard are celebrating having scored a four-star rating in the newly released James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2012 edition, revered as this country’s definitive guide to good wines. Jack Rabbit general manager Lyndsay Sharp said the entire Jack Rabbit team was “over the moon” about the rating which confirmed young winemaker Nyall Condon’s status as a rising star in the Australian wine industry. “The four-star rating is a real credit to Nyall – to come out at the upper end of Halliday ratings in the first year of Jack Rabbit Vineyard’s operations is no mean feat – it goes to show we have a real talent on our

hands,” Mrs Sharp said. “What is also extremely gratifying is that the vineyard’s commitment to small batch handling, minimal interference and showcasing varietal nuances would seem to be paying off.” Mr Condon said he was delighted with the Halliday 2012 rating on a number of levels. “My aim is to craft Jack Rabbit wines as a true reflection of The Bellarine’s wonderful maritime climate ‘terroir’, which inherently encompasses long ripening periods and facilitates intense fruit characteristics and captivating tannin influences – without doubt, the fruit is the hero,” Mr Condon said. “Jack Rabbit wines are

complex without being too complicated – each and every one is a wine that, as winemaker, I am proud of.” Mr Condon said the ever-increasing stable of Jack Rabbit sophisticated cool climate wines featured showpieces of respective grape varietals. These include the single vineyard sparkling

blanc de blanc, sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, chardonnay, rose, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon. “Vintage 2011 Jack Rabbit wines are well and truly shaping up to kick some serious goals and we’ve got some sensational new additions coming through including the newly released

Moscato and a lovely Riesling.” Jack Rabbit wines can be tasted at the vineyard’s restaurant and cellar door, open 7 days a week 10.30 – 5pm and dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. It is located at 85 McAdams Lane, Bellarine. Phone 5251 2223.

Skills on show at open OCEAN Grove golf club held its annual open tournament last week. The week began in perfect conditions with the women’s 4BBB sponsored by Beachhouse restaurant. Barwon Heads’ winners were Anne Collis and Leslie Cook from Queens Park with 47 points. Tuesday’s weather deteriorated for the men’s 4BBB, however local duo Bryan Cackett and Norm Robbins managed to produce a fine score of 48 points to win the event sponsored by Airssential. The highlight of Wednesday’s mixed ambrose, sponsored by Hotondo Homes, was a hole in one albatross on the par 4 15th hole by Simon Walter of Ocean Grove. Simon is a sponsor of the tournament through his business Woodies Pizza. The hole in one helped Simons team of Chris and Paula Clark, Simon and Jill Jacimovic to a win in the event by 1/8. On Thursday the seniors took to the course for an 18 hole stableford event with Ken Leeds (43 points) becoming the men’s senior champion in a tight threeway countback, while Janet Barras (41) became the women’s senior champion, also on a countback. Hayden Real Estate and Bellarine Memories Funeral Directors were sponsors. Overnight the weather turned sour with hail storms and near gale force winds causing a few withdrawals

from the women’s open championship on Friday, sponsored by Coastal Roofing. The field was high quality with several single figure handicappers taking part. As the wind played havoc with the field, former Ocean Grove Golf Club junior Adele Huggard carded the best gross score of 80 to take out the open championship. Local player Kerry Norton (30 handicap) had a day to remember when she had a hole in one on the par 3 13th hole on her way to winning the best nett trophy with a score of 62. The main event, sponsored by Peter and Maris Williams Brokers, was the men’s 36hole open championship which finished with a tie for the main prize between youngster Tyron Cover (4 handicap) and club vicecaptain David Smith (10). Both had 148 scratch for 36 holes. A sudden death play-off was needed to split the pair with Tyron being the eventual winner after just one hole of the play-off. He received the Ray Danks perpetual trophy. The overall nett trophy was won by Gary Ward of Bannockburn on a countback from David Smith. The final day was the mixed Pinehurst event sponsored by Drummonds Golf. The nett winners on the day were Janet Barras and Lachlan Smith. The gross winners were the event’s sponsors Chris Brooks and Simone Davie from Curlewis and 13th Beach.

The keen golfer, a member of the Ocean Grove Golf Club for the past four years, was playing in a four-person Ambrose teams’ event when the Albatross occurred. “I just teed off and I said that would be a pretty good shot as the ball will be on the green and we will be having an eagle putt,” said Walters who owns Woodies Pizza in

Score shock for Simon By MARK HEENAN AN ALBATROSS is a rare achievement in golf, but Ocean Grove local Simon Walters (pictured) admits he never saw the moment coming. Walters, who plays off a handicap of 10, scored a hole in one on the par 4 on hole 15 during the weeklong Ocean Grove Golf Club Championships which started on Monday September 5.

Ocean Grove. “The green was blocked by the trees, so you can’t actually see the green and anyway I walked to the green and we were looking for the ball and my playing partner went up and rattled the flag and said ‘here it is, here’. “I said ‘Don’t be silly’… and he said ‘The ball is in the hole’ and I couldn’t believe it and I started shaking a bit.”

for Waves seniors IT HAS been a fantastic season for the Surfside Waves Soccer Club with numerous teams winning league titles and competing in finals. The division two senior men won the league, while the senior women were not to be out done also taking the league title with a win in the final league match to clinch top spot. Their success against Barwon, 6-2, at the weekend has secured them a spot in the grand final this weekend. The senior men showed character in coming back with a controversial penalty to be 1-1 at full time against Surf Coast. Both sides then went into half an hour of extra time. Surfside Waves scored through Staffan Hargreaves before the Surf Coast goalkeeper ran up and equalised, forcing the match into a penalty shoot-out. The Waves converted all their penalties and Surf Coast missed one shot, giving a grand final berth to the home team. SENIOR RESULTS Senior Men: Surfside d Surf Coast on penalties. Senior Women: Surfside 6 d Barwon 2. JUNIOR RESULTS September 10-11 U/15 boys: Surfside 3 d Surfcoast 0. Another great performance by the boys who have been the class team of the competition all season. They need to maintain focus on the grand final and cap off a top season with the premiership. U/12 boys: Surfside 3 lost to Surf Coast Yellow 4. Great effort to come back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 at half-time. Surf Coast piled on the pressure in the second

half scoring twice to take a 4-3 lead. The Waves fought hard but couldn’t find an equaliser. The boys have improved immensely over the season and did well to make the finals. U/15 girls: Surfside 0 lost to Surf Coast 2. A very tight encounter between two very even teams could have gone either way. The Waves battled hard with only 11 players and no subs to really push Surf Coast. U/13 girls: Surfside 5 d Bell Park Red 1. The girls showed why they finished on top of the ladder in a commanding performance against Bell Park Red in their semi-final.

champion players SEVEN junior teams from Ocean Grove contested grand finals on Sunday, September 11, and Friday, September 16. The results were exciting with five teams coming out on top as premiers. Under 13 (1) — The girls played a great game to beat Portarlington by 10 goals. Strong defensive work by the team contributed to the convincing win. The best players were Emily Moroney, Maddy Traynor and Heidi Bennett. Well done to all the girls. Under 13 (2) — A close game in which the Grove girls managed to win by just three goals against Drysdale, 25-22.. They played great netball and were supported well by Carly Sanders’ accuracy in goal attack. She was named one of the best players, along with Bethany Walder and Keely Pentling. Under 13 (4) — The energetic Grove girls managed to contain a comeback from Torquay in the fourth quarter to maintain their lead and win the final 17-13. An intense rivalry between the two teams all season guaranteed an exciting match for the many spectators. Claudia Britt was named as best on court following her hard work and 10-goal haul in goal attack. Her sidekick in goal shooter, Romi Bergman, also played a strong game and finished with seven goals. Well done to all the girls on a strong season. Under 15 (1) — Unfortunately the girls struggled against their best competition for the year and had a loss, Torquay running out as winner 31-18. Despite the score line there was great teamwork demonstrated in the goals between Zanna Woods and Molly Babb. Among the best players were Bridget Taylor, Babb and Clem Praud. Good luck to

the girls for next year. Under 15 (2) — Another close game with a three-goal margin that unfortunately went the other way, Torquay winning 18-15. The girls in defence, Alannah Nicol and Meg B, were on fire and caused some headaches for the opposition through held balls. The best players were Amy Gibbs, who performed the splits for the spectators, Alannah Nicol for her work in defence and Alice Digby for her strong efforts. Under 15 (3) — A convincing win of 31-18 had GWSP wondering how the Grove girls could possibly be beaten. The high skill level from the Ocean Grove girls provided plenty of ball flow down the court and allowed them to register a more than ample amount of goals. Best on court was awarded to Briony Wemyss in goal attack, while Matilda Doyle and Jane Fendyk were also highlighted as key players for the match. The girls showed great camaraderie after the game when they ran from their court to celebrate with the other 15s team. Under 15 (4) — The team stayed consistent throughout the match to overcome St Mary’s, 26-17. The coach, Cathy Sullivan, was proud of how her girls had settled down and kept steady. She said it had been a great team effort and singled Olivia Duhamel out as having her best game of the season. The best on court was awarded to the outstanding Chelsea G in goal defence. Under 17 (1) — The girls had a disappointing loss and were beaten, 2110, by a Queenscliff team that wanted the ball and the win more. Kelsey Ollis was named as best player for her great work in defence and high percentage of rebounds. Other best players included Shelby Hackett and Laura Ellis.

TS NEEDS

By MARK HEENAN THIS year’s Ocean Grove Football Club senior best and fairest winner Bernie Lynch has declared he will not play football in 2012. Lynch, who turns 29 in October, plans to take a season off from football to concentrate on family and study commitments. He said the need to finish his construction management degree at Deakin University, and the impending birth of a new child, were key factors behind his decision. “I don’t think (I’ll be playing) next year, not at the moment, Lynch told the Voice exclusively last week. “I’m going to take some time off, I’m going to try and finish my degree. “I have got this year and next year to finish. “My wife is about to have a baby in January, I’m probably going to take some time off to enjoy those couple of things and make sure I get

it right. The Herne Hill resident, who played 19 games mainly as a defender and kicked six goals in 2011, said as the season wore on it was getting harder to commute to training and playing in Ocean Grove. “It was hard to get down there, construction school is pretty full on and when the baby comes along in January that is going to take some time, the former North Shore GFL coach said. “I just realised I struggled for a bit of time at the end, I just did not want to be half hearted. “I like to do things properly and something was going to have to give and unfortunately footy was the one. “I tried to see into the future and I realise I probably won’t have the time to do it all. Lynch admitted he informed Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor what his intentions were for 2012

before season’s end. “I spoke to Cam (McGregor) before the season had finished and let him know what my plans were, he said. “I suppose word sort of filtered around after a little bit during the commiseration drinks following season’s end. MEANWHILE The Ocean Grove Football and Netball Club Presentation Night will be held at Skilled Stadium’s Fred Flanagan Room on Saturday, September 24. Tickets are $50.

TIME TO REST: Bernie Lynch won’t be playing for Ocean Grove next season.

Senior season in the spotlight By CAMERON McGREGOR Ocean Grove coach DEFENDERS The backs this year had a lot more stability, with Bernie Lynch basically playing the whole season down in defence. Kane Reardon took on a lot more responsibility after the first three or four games. The good part about it was that we worked really hard to be stronger in defence than we were last year. We had to be a lot more stable than what we were last year in defence and we changed more guys through the backline. We wanted a seven-man

back line; we had one on the interchange and just rotated that way rather than chopping and changing too much. Overall that worked a lot better. Rating out 8/10 MIDFIELDERS A couple of new acquisitions were Rohan O’Callaghan and Luke Sinnott, who was playing good football until he got hurt in round 10. Cade Wellington went through the midfield. James Dalton obviously moved from the midfield and had time up forward. I think our clearances definitely improved on last year’s figures. Even in

the games where we were beaten in the middle, we weren’t beaten 90 per cent of the time, it might have been 70 per cent. There was some good improvement there. That is certainly an area we need to continue to work on, with the guys playing another year together that will improve next season. Rating out of 7/10 FORWARDS We had Chooka Wayde Piec at full-forward, we had Daniel Maloney earlier in the year and then he went back and played six reserves games. Big Pete Corredig got better every game, so he

was a great acquisition for us. Travis Gavin and Wellington did a good job. We had times where Shane Jack getting hurt was a big loss. Looking forward to a full 18 games out of him next season. We were the most attacking side in the competition, we had a higher score rate than anyone else. We had an even spread of goalkickers. We probably needed one more key forward. We could not get Chooka and Daniel Maloney firing at the same time, they are both capable kicking goals on their day. Maloney’s second half of the season was fantastic. Rating out of 7/10

RUCKS New recruit Tom Foott came on board and gave us what we lacked last year, he is still fairly raw and adjusting to senior footy. We used Corredig as his back up and that worked fairly well most of the year. We lost the last final without Foott as he was injured. However, we certainly improved in the ruck division from last season. If we can add another ruckman into the stockpile for 2012 like every club is trying to do, that would mean Corredig can play permanently forward rather be our back-up ruckman. Rating out of 6/10

Close and yet so far THE GRUBBERS reserves exited the BFL finals series after suffering a 27-point loss to Torquay in the preliminary final on Saturday September 10 at Drysdale. At the final siren Torquay was 9.9 (63) to Ocean Grove 5.6 (36). The Ocean Grove reserves who won premierships in 2007 and 2009, finished in first position at the end of the 2011 home and away season with a 16-2 record. The BFL ladder leaders

led Torquay by 11 points at quarter time and by 13 points at half time. In the second half Torquay took control and kept Ocean Grove scoreless in the third quarter. In the fourth term Torquay overcame a three-point deficit at the final break to defeat Ocean Grove with an impresive six-goal final quarter blitz. Torquay went on to play Modewarre in last weekend’s BFL reserves grand final.

TOUGH BATTLE: Ocean Grove’s reserves fought hard in the preliminary finals against Torquay, but couldn’t control the Tigers.

Netball hoopla IT HAS been a big finals campaign for Ocean Grove netballers and after a tough season five teams have had their hard work pay off. In the Geelong netball league the under 13 (4), under 15 (3) and under 15 (4) each won premierships, while in the Bellarine netball league the under 13s (1, pictured, and 2) also won.

From Grove to the ’G Mark Neeld led the Ocean Grove seniors to four flags and now Melbourne is hoping he can weave his magic for the Demons. By MARK HEENAN FOUR-Time Ocean Grove senior premiership coach Mark Neeld (pictured) has joined the elite AFL senior coaching ranks. Ocean Grove based Neeld, 40, who led the Grubbers to BFL flags from 2000 to 2003, was announced officially on Saturday as the new coach of the Melbourne Demons for the next three seasons. “I’d really like to thank the

Melbourne Football Club for the opportunity and for the decision they’ve come to,” said Neeld, at the club announcement on Saturday. “I can’t wait to roll my sleeves up, I’m ready. “I’ve done as much as I can in the past 15 years to get here and I’ve put in a lot of work. “I’ve done as much as possible to be ready right now. I’m ready to go.” After a stint with TAC

Cup club the Western Jets, Neeld has since honed his craft at Collingwood from 2008 where he has worked as defence coach and more recently as midfield coach. Neeld also held senior leadership positions and was head of physical education at Geelong College. He played 74 AFL matches and kicked 36 AFL goals from 1990-96 with Geelong and Richmond.

He is the 27th coach of the Demons. Melbourne CEO Cameron Schwab said Neeld had plenty of support. “Mark was heavily endorsed as a coach, in particular by Michael Malthouse, as well as other respected people in the football system,” Schwab said. “He is direct, strong, and has a clear view as to how he wants his team to play.”
