FRIENDS in Ocean Grove and Wallington are mourning the loss of their mate Ryan Cooper who tragically died after being hit by a taxi on the Bellarine Highway last week. The 17-year-old Saint Ignatius College student from Leopold was crossing Bellarine Highway, between Homestead Avenue and Swan Bay Road, at about 3.40am on Thursday when he was struck by a car travelling in a westerly direction. The car that hit Ryan was the taxi that had just dropped him and three friends off moments earlier. The taxi driver and sole occupant, a 43year old man from Geelong, is assisting police with their enquiries.

Chef’s award When it comes to winning awards Oakdene Vineyards Winery has bagged the lion’s share over the past few years. Their latest in the expansive trophy collection comes through young 1st year apprentice Jesse Dewar (pic right) who was awarded the Outstanding structured workplace learning student 2008 at the Geelong Regional Vocational Education annual awards evening held late last month. Jesse was selected from eight finalists across the Geelong Region who had displayed outstanding qualities in their chosen vocational programs. A panel of employers interviewed each of the finalists and selected Jess for his commitment and dedication to on the job learning. Marty Chichester executive chef from Oakdene Vineyards praised the ability of his young apprentice. “Jesse is always willing and eager to put in the hard yards.” The former pupil of St Ignatius College received a framed certificate and cash prize for his win.

The event is a great chance to browse and buy from the many stalls as well as enjoying the park, meeting friends and supporting park improvements and mainentance. GROVE NEWS Ocean Grove Rotarians hosted five Wedderburn families recently as part of its effort to assist drought hit communities. Pictured left, Rotarians and some of the families enjoyed a farewell barbecue at the Mirrabooka Cottage camp facility in Ocean Grove last Friday night.
Rotary helps drought hit OCEAN Grove was recently host to five families from the drought-striken Wedderburn area of country Victoria. The local rotary club got together with the Girl Guide Association to host the families at its Mirrabooka Cottage camp facility next to Kingston Park. The nine parents and 11 children were taken on tours of the local beaches, the Rip, Torquay, the Ford Discovery Centre and Wallington’s mini golf in the community bus – all put on and paid for by rotary club and or supported by venues they visited. Some restaurants and takeaways offered the group free meals. The families stayed for four days. Rotary youth coordinator Judy Greer explained that the idea came from an article in Royal Auto
last year. The article highlighted the problems faced by families and children in relation to the drought in the Wedderburn area of country Victoria and some work being done at local schools with the help of Salvation Army workers. “It’s gone very well,” said Judy. “The children were really excited.” Wedderburn has a population of about 1,000 people. Among those visiting Ocean Grove was third generation farmer John Tomkin who described the drought as ‘almost like a disease’ that damages other parts of their area’s economy and gradually affects wider areas. He said the answer was simple – “Rain - and a lot of it. We haven’t had good enough rain for ten years. We just keep trying and trying. You can’t give up,” he said.

Authors help turn new page THE official opening of Book Grove also saw a book signing by former Ocean Grover David Richardson. David an advertising screenwriter has collaborated with a former filmmaking colleague Steven Hunt , an award-winning graphic designer, to create a unique picture book-cum-graphic novel called Cloudchasers.
The signing went so well Steven had to nip out to get more copies. Book shop owner Stacey Moore said she was thrilled by the turn out for the opening and the signing. “I’m just so happy that I have realized my dream. I am ecstatic about the support from the local community.”

Welding sparks cause shed fire WELDING sparks at an Ocean Grove auto fabricators accidentally set fire to a cavity wall and damaged an extractor unit at an adjoining surfboard shaping factory. Fire crews were called to the incident at the industrial estate last Friday after Imperial Surfboard’s Dave Boyd noticed smoke billowing from his walls. A spokesman for Ocean Grove CFA crews said
that quick thinking by Dave and staff at the auto fabricators prevented a more serious fire taking hold. However the fire was still smouldering inside the cavity which meant the crews utilised quick access cutting gear to get through the corrugated steel sheeting. The cutting tool was recently donated by Ocean Grove Rotary.

An ‘awesome’ day
“AWESOME” was how Ocean Grove’s Hailey Begg described the feeling after marrying Dan James on the sunny banks of the Barwon on Saturday afternoon. Glowing and smiling throughout, nothing could touch their special day. Even Archie the dolphin knew it was time to take a backstage role, playing on the far side of the river throughout the short but happy service. It was exactly what the terminally ill but determined hairdresser dreamed with the man who proposed the night she was diagnosed with skin cancer. Hailey, 26, arrived in a stretch Hummer wearing a strapless cream dress and carrying a bouquet of white and pink flowers. She walked down the red carpeted isle at Ozone Jetty with her proud parents, John and Terry. More than 200 family and friends from Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Geelong, Werribee and further afield joined the happy couple to celebrate at the Ozone Jetty in Barwon Heads. Local community, family and friends have rallied behind Hailey after she was told she might have only a few months to live. Ocean Grove Golf Club provided finger food for the reception, Marycheles Hair Studio did the hair and makeup, Beachside Blooms organ-
ized the flowers for free, Barwon Heads Hotel helped with drinks and another benefactor offered to pay for a honeymoon, although this will be on hold as Hailey will return to hospital this week to start more treatment. Hailey was diagnosed with skin cancer after having a troublesome mole removed from her shoulder and she has risen to the moment in a bid to encourage others to be more aware of the dangers of the sun. Happy together: Dan and Hailey. “It’s not publicised enough,” she said. “Skin cancer is a massive issue. People are used to seeing older people with cancer but it does happen to younger people,” she said. Hailey is certainly up for the fight, revealing that she had pulled through from a coma and eight months of rehab after surviving a horrific car accident when she was 18. “Going through all that was probably worse than the cancer,” Hailey said. “When I was first diagnosed with cancer I said I’ll beat it. Hopefully I will do it again. Whatever it takes. “I’m not sick yet so I might as well start fighting it while I’m able. There’s just so many things that I want to do. “Fortunately I met Dan who is just an amazing guy. One in a million”

AS a resident of Ocean Grove for three years, I have witnessed some rapid growth and change in the area. Some of my first memories of Ocean Grove are unfortunately based around work. I am currently the manager of Ocean Grove Cellars in the Terrace, but have been working here for my father for the past five years or so. I love the relaxed nature of the area, the friendly people and, of course, the pristine beaches and river. I wish the latter was my first memory of Ocean Grove, rather than working a twelve hour day in a locality I knew nothing about. I grew up in Ballarat and attended school there, after graduating High School. I moved to Melbourne and studied Chinese Language and International Relations at the University of Melbourne. I graduated in 2007 at the age of 20 and decided a break was the best course of action. Luckily my parents had moved to Ocean Grove and I was able to slot back into the household and work for my father. I also work nights as a professional DJ in various nightclubs and venues in both Geelong and Melbourne, providing a great social outlet and allowing me plenty of new places and to meet new people. Through my work at Ocean Grove Cellars I am lucky to be involved with various clubs, both sporting and social. My father and I work with the Ocean Grove Bowling and Football Clubs, are associated with the Ocean Grove Strawberry and Apple fairs and give advice and aide at various wine and cheese nights with institutions such as the CWA and RSL.
As mentioned earlier, I have only been a resident of the area for three years, yet in this time I have witnessed the emergence of the Shell Road shopping complex, the refurbishment of Barwon Heads main street, the upgrading of the local health club facilities, the Barwon Heads bridge proposed development and the growth of the Parade shopping complex including Target. The growth in the area in housing and retail over the past three years has definitely had an impact, the Summer period offering more to visitors than ever. I haven’t felt a need to leave Ocean Grove yet,

at the age of 23 I am very happy to call Ocean Grove home and to work in the area. I find the people relaxed and calm, friendly and sociable. I feel a real sense of community, with local businesses all involved in various areas of fundraising and aiding the growth of the town. I have a degree, but see no need to leave and make use of it yet, as the Terrace provides me with an ample social life, great food and a relaxed atmosphere I am yet to discover elsewhere. Oh, I suppose Archie is a pretty cool reason to stay too. How many people can say they have a dolphin in the river?

Upstream on a high tide
DURING the Easter king tides that flooded a lot of the Barwon Estuary wetlands a group of nine kayakers took the chance of a spectacular upstream safari. Led by experienced kayaker Noel Emselle, who is also president of the Friends of the Marine Discovery Centre in Queencliff, the group were treated to a peaceful and memorable paddles along the old mangrove bordered course of the Barwon River. Noel timed it perfectly to allow the team to travel up the tidal creek beside the golf course on the incoming tide and return on the outgoing tidal flow - which was surpising fast moving. Welcome on the wetlands
THE Welcome Swallow is a fantastic bird to watch due to it’s fast, swooping, and erratic flying pattern. Swallows often swoop around my dogs when we are walking around Begola Wetlands. The Swallow is blue/ black above the wing, light grey on the breast and rusty on the forehead and throat. It also has a long forked tail, although this tail is shorter in females compared to males. Young Swallows are white, not rusty on the forehead and throat. The Swallow is a small bird, that grows to a maximum of 15cms. Welcome Swallows are found in many habitats throughout Australia, except in Central Australia. They are migratory, and move around in response
to food availability. They feed on a wide variety of insects. They catch insects during flight. They have short bristles on their bill which aid in guiding the insects into their mouths while flying at speed. In areas where there are a large supply of insects, swallows are found in large flocks. Swallows build a nest made out of mud and grass. Both sexes construct the nest, which is usually attached to a verical rock wall or building. The nest is lined with feathers. The female incubates the egss but both sexes are involved in feeding the young. Pairs often rear several broods in a breeding season (August to February). By Jenny Carr

AS Ocean Grove RSL prepares to hold its increasingly well attended Anzac Parade through the town there is some hope that locals may consider offering an hour or two a week to help on the veterans welfare team. The team, which has recently been out delivering parade posters to shopkeepers - supported by the Businesss Association - to display in their windows, provide a regular visiting system for ex-vets and other residents at local nursing homes. Organiser Yvette Timmins said the work is a lot of fun and the current team of ladies and a few RSL members really enjoy the visits. DRENT Architects is husband and wife team, Luisa and Dierijk Drent. New faces make Waves SURFSIDE Waves soccer club’s season gets underway proper this weekend. The club is fielding three senior mens’ and one senior women’s sides this time around. The women’s side plays on Saturday afternoons and the men on the Sunday afternoons. This Sunday Waves men have three home matches with the second and third sides kicking off at 1pm and the division one side kicking off at 3pm.

OCEAN Grove surfers have joined in the praise for Victoria’s first ever Bells Rip Curl Pro finalist Adam Robertson (pic right). The cold water surfer fought through the trials to win a wildcard entry and a pop at the world’s best near Torquay last week, proving local surfers can match their northern counterparts. Robbo eventually reached the final against Joel Parkinson but unfortunately the Portland surfer was unable to get over CT tour leader. But he still achieved the best ever result for a Victorian. “It was really good, just a shame he couldn’t have won, that would have been
a perfect fairytale,” said local surfer Trent Myers. “He was easily as good as the other guys out there. “With people like Nick Muscroft on the World Tour is just goes to show they (cold water surfers) can do it if they really try. It can be done. What was great was he got through on a wildcard and knocked out a lot of big guys on the way.” “It’s cool,” said Darryl (Murf) Murphy, “especially for him. We’ve had all the rock stars like Kelly Slater and those but to see a guy who has come from the local area make it was great.”
