JP slams ‘slap wrist’ for graffiti offender
HOT PIES
AN Ocean Grove JP has called for graffiti vandals to be made to clean up their handywork.
Bill Sommers, a Justice of the Peace with decades of justice system service behind him, has slammed recent sentencing of vandals caught defacing Grove shop fronts. In the most recent case a
Geelong magistrate issued a 12 month good behaviour bond to an Ocean Grove man in his 20s who was found guilty of causing $3,000 worth of damage. Mr Sommers, who has lived in Ocean Grove for eight years and brought his children up holidaying here, spent 44 years in Altona. Continued page 2.

OCEAN Grove residents are having difficulty accessing mobile phone and internet reception. Telecommunication companies are selling locals mobile internet plans and phones on the basis that Ocean Grove is theoretically a full coverage area. SeeCure IT owner Mike Griffiths said that the mobile broadband and 3G signals hit the Wallington hills and go straight over the town, leaving low lying pockets of the town unable to pick up a signal. “We’re not in a built up area like Geelong or Melbourne, we won’t get full coverage,” he said. Mike said it’s frustrating for customers as signal coverage maps indicate that Ocean Grove has full accessibility to signal despite the problems consumers are facing. “Telcos have to have awareness of

the issues in Ocean Grove,” he said. Major problem areas in Ocean Grove include Blue Waters Lake, Collendina, and other low lying areas. “Wallington is notorious for phone reception especially in the outer areas of Ocean Grove, don’t even consider it.” Mike himself has trouble reaching a signal, having to leave his house and make phone calls from the street. “It’s a matter of meters of some (signal) to nothing,” he said. For people looking at connecting to the internet in Ocean Grove, Mike suggests it’s safer to stick with wired internet connections as companies

Trees Rolled Gold for pies planted TREES are being planted in Parkes Estate, partly in response to a Voice story in August, writes Carly Helweg. Council contractors planted 200 dwarf eucalypts (eucalyptus leucoxylon) in the first week of September. The trees are variants of the Yellow Gum, found throughout Ocean Grove. The vegetation has given the once bare streets a new look and brings them in line with the rest of the Kingston and Parks Estates. Parks Estate resident Gary Norris came to shake the worker’s hands and thank them for all their hard work. “It’s been five years of waiting, it’s a great result,” he said.
ROLLING Pin Pies and Cakes has pulled off another top honour in the prestigious Great Aussie Meat Pie competition. The Ocean Grove and Queenscliff business scooped a gold medal in the Gourmet Pie Competition Red Meat Category. The Rolling Pin is owened by Geoff and Susan Chalker. Manager Nathan Williams said they were “Ecstatic” about the win. “It’s fantastic. You are hoping, knowing you’ve got a pretty good product, but you can’t be sure.
“I guess we try not to rest on our laurels. We continually try and improve our product. We take into consideration the judges’ comments.” Most of the pies they entered were the same type as last year but they entered their newish pie - the chicken, leek and

bacon - and won a bronze medal in that too. Judges look at everything from meat quality and aroma to eye appeal, pastry, thickness of the pastry, the flake of pastry. Rolling Pin won the overall national title in 2004. John Ross, National Competition Director of the Great Aussie Meat Pie competition, told the Voice that he had called passed Ocean Grove on a Bellarine trip and found the shop pies to be just as good as the ones entered in the competitions.

LOCALS are invited to lunch in the park on November 27. The first Ocean Grove Community Picnic will be held at Ocean Grove Park from 12pm-3pm. Ocean Grove Community Enterprise will sponsor and host the event which will have food and drink stalls as well as live entertainment. Chairman, Jon Mamonski said that the picnic will coincide with the State Election Polling day and hopes that people who are out to vote might drop by to share their lunch. “We’re calling on Ocean Grove to basically come and have a picnic in the park,” John said. The OGCE will also use the event to announce the recipients of this year’s round of grants for local community groups.

As for mobile phone reception, Mike said it’s the major telcos that feed our area with signal and all other phone companies have to rent the towers to allow Ocean Grove access. This may mean reduced signal strength or increased fees for customers. “People have to be informed when making a decision,” he said.

Oakdene Vineyards has won the Top Gold medal in a class at the Ballarat Wine Show for its 2009 ‘Peta’s’ Pinot Noir and taken a second Gold for its 2009 ‘Elizabeth’ Chardonnay. Wine Manager Steven Paul said it had been another successful year for Oakdene. “The quality of our wines from the 2009 vintage is very good and we are looking forward to seeing how the wines are received when they are released later this year.”
OCEAN Grove Senior Citizens Centre will hold an open day as part of the Geelong Seniors Festival. The open day at the Centre, 101 The Terrace, will be on October 5. The club will be open from 10am–3pm and will showcase its indoor bowls, snooker, Nordic walking, bingo, “crazy whist” and “500”. On Thursday October 7 and Sunday 17 at 2pm a concert will be performed by The Troubadours. Tickets available from the club on Tuesday afternoons, at the door, or from John on 5251 1007.
JP slams ‘slap wrist’ for graffiti offender Continued from page 1. Mr Sommers, who has lived in Ocean Grove for eight years and brought his children up holidaying here, spent 44 years in Altona said the town is still a friendly paradise compared to where he comes from but called on the magistrates to back up the efforts of caring citizens such as Neighbourhood Watch members and the professional efforts of police. “I just feel that here guys were caught doing this damage, wilful

damage, they get taken to the court by the police only for the magistrate to turn around and give them a 12 month good behaviour bond. “As far as I’m concerned a good behaviour bond is just a slap on the wrist and saying ‘you naughty boy, don’t do it again’. I think that the shop keepers around here, they take pride in their little town here and I think for them to turn around and read what has transpired as far as the court is concerned – it’s a
go softly approach by the courts and I think that people should be up in arms and writing in to Rod Hulls and department of justice and surely giving them a nice old serve. “I think that they should be made responsible for the damage that has occurred, that they should be made to get the paint, paint the thing out and also cop the 12 month good behaviour bond so that they don’t do it again. Just letting them go scot free and just a slap on the wrist
is not good enough. It’s got to be harsher. By bringing them out and making them paint the walls and tidy everything up to what it was I think would be appreciated more by the public and make it better.” Mr Sommers is also chairman of the Westgate Roadsafe Liaison Group, a road safety group which has just chalked up 20 years and was instrumental in getting hoon behaviour legislation enacted. Help for flood hit THE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove has made a $4000 contribution to disaster relief in the north-western region of Pakistan, where heavy rainfall has caused the most severe flooding the country has seen in over 80 years. The flooding has destroyed buildings and infrastructure, affecting more than 13 million people. The club’s contribution will provide Family Survival Packs and Shelter Boxes for families in need of food, water and shelter. Club member Richard Grimmett explained that Shelter Box delivers large plastic boxes containing tents, cooking equipment, sleeping bags and essential tools for families to survive in a disaster. 624 are already on their way to Pakistan.

Aaron centre, enjoys the winning moment with teammates.
OCEAN GROVE Football Club Under 18’s premiership hero Aaron Hapgood admits he is still lucky to be alive. The 18-year-old inspired many as a result of the Grubbers Under 18’s Bellarine Football League Grand Final win on September 11 after amazingly surviving a cardiac arrest two years ago. The bubbly teenager spent four months at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne after undergoing a heart transplant. Aaron who spent time in ICU, was born with an aortic valve stenosis, a valvular heart disease that causes an abnormal narrowing of the aortic valve. “I had the heart transplant two years ago in 2008 and I felt sick and I had a cardiac arrest in hospital after a basic operation,” Aaron said. “All of sudden I started getting dizzy spells and felt unwell and did not know why.”
This year’s Under 18 BFL Grand Final victory was not the first time the lively youngster had an integral role at the league decider at Spring Creek Reserve in Torquay. In 2008, Aaron helped inspire the Grubbers to an Under 18 Grand Final win against Queenscliff. In a twist of irony, Aaron kindly agreed to spend the day beneath the scoreboard at Spring Creek Reserve being plugged up to the power supply to keep him alive and cheer the Grubbers to a premiership victory. “He was given permission by the hospital to leave and watch the Under 18 Grand Final in 2008,” His mother Janene described. “It was a big deal to us and for him to be there – the people at the game knew he was coming. Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor praised Hapgood’s ability to return to the elite BFL underage football ranks

after a harrowing time recovering from his operation. “Just to have a kid that’s back alive and even just playing is amazing,” McGregor said. “He had the heart transplant two years ago and he has had to overcome a lot. “I know he has struggled with breathing problems at times.” The Bellarine Secondary College student’s story continues to grow with many print and electronic media outlets requesting interviews including Channel Ten news and the Herald Sun. In 2010, Aaron kicked 30 goals from his 12 matches with the Grubbers Under 18’s. He booted two goals in the BFL Grand Final against Drysdale.
SHOES could hold the clue to the identity of a would-be car thief. The thief, who was disturbed breaking into vehicles in Capella Road earlier this month, fled the scene leaving his white pumps. The man described at 6ft tall with a thin build and wearing a white hoody, was spotted tampering with cars Sunday 11 September 2010 at about 4am. The offender lost his shoes when he was chased from the scene. His shoes have distinctive blue and white laces. Any information contact Senior Constable Shaun Moore on 52562698.

Newer locals would do well to support these activities too, otherwise we risk losing the things that make the place special.
Despite the problems Ocean Grove is still one of the best places in Australia to live. If the Grove ever does become too hectic for me, though, I’ll take my seachange off down the coast to another sleepy little coastal town with great scenery to photograph, a good golf course and a nice beach to walk on. Not for a while yet though!

spent at my computer checking and answering emails, taking bookings and payments for courses and working on my website and presentations. Because so much of my time is spent working at my computer I find there is less time to actually get out and take photos anymore, which is a bit sad. I have promised myself to fix that in the future. Whenever I can I walk the Ocean Grove beach or the Bluff at Barwon Heads with my wife. We lost our dogs recently so now it is a lot harder to get motivated to go walking (especially on cold mornings) but we do go regularly with the occasional breakfast at the Dunes or coffee at the Blue Fin in the Terrace afterwards. I used to play a lot of golf at the Ocean Grove GC where I was a member but there hasn’t been much time for that lately. Another promise for the future! As I see it the biggest single issue facing Ocean Grove is coping with the phenomenal growth of the last ten years and trying to maintain a balance between commercial and community interests. Unfortunately the future is probably more people, more high-rise, more medium density housing and more commercial activity with less space and nature as a balance. Most likely the Geelongcentric council will continue NOT fixing the many unmade roads and footpaths around the place too, but we live in hope! Over the years I have worked with local groups including the

MY sea-change happened in 1990 when my wife and I bought a holiday house in Ocean Grove as a weekend getaway from the stress of Melbourne long before the ABC SeaChange program made it such a popular idea. We knew this area a little from a few holiday visits and it was in our price bracket at the time. We probably couldn’t afford to move here now! Five years later we were living here permanently, a decision we have never regretted for a minute. I continued doing freelance photography work selling images to clients via the internet and for a few years had to do whatever other work came along. Now I also offer digital photography workshops and training through my PhotoSkills business and teach photography part-time in Geelong. My professional career had me shooting a lot of science and medical subjects to support research or to illustrate textbooks. I still enjoy the technical challenge of this type of photography but I now find myself doing much more portraiture and landscape photography which I find a pleasant change. I have travelled a lot and have an extensive library of travel photos but whenever I can I am out and about around the Bellarine Peninsula, the Great Ocean Road and the Otways shooting the amazing local forest and coastal scenery which is some of the most picturesque in the world. Typically my day is mostly

Young Surfside Primary gardeners in front of blossom trees and their kitchen building.
STUDENTS at Surfside Primary School are getting their hands dirty and finishing off their winter harvest in preparation for next month’s Fresh Food Fair. Gardener Brendan Bolton said that the recent soaking rains had
made the garden look fantastic with bumper crops and lots of blossom on their fruit trees to make some tasty fruit recipes. Earlier in the year the children harvested different seeds from the garden – including celery,
coriander, radishes - and have started planting them in seed trays to watch the transformation. “We’re hoping our tomato seedlings will take off and be ready to sell at the fair”, said coordinator Donna Barrot. “We’ve
transplanted parsley, mint and other herbs into small pots to also sell.” Mark the date on your calendar – Melbourne Cup Weekend Sunday October 31 - an event not to be missed!

Boys not men: graffiti in town Dear Editor I am very surprised at the description given to the vandals, who desecrated the painted wave wall and bent numerous street signs, as men. These vandals are not men. Men go to war, fight for their country, have a sense of responsibility for themselves and community, they have civic pride and duty. These vandals scribble on walls and break community infrastructure paid for by ratepayers. Little children
who are immature break their toys and scribble on walls. These over grown arrested developmental boys are no different except for the fact that by age 20 they should have been taught how to behave and respect and value the community they are privileged to live in. Many people work long and hard to improve the beautiful town that is Ocean Grove. These boys that thankfully were caught in their destructive acts should
now be heavily fined and made to work for at least three months repairing community amenities or setting up new works with council supervision, in order to think about their stupidity and change their immature attitudes. Many thanks to Acting Sergeant John Dunstan for his no tolerance approach in this matter. Name and address supplied Ocean Grove Vandals daubed the town recently.
Aldi follow up stirs interest Dear Editor The last story is the first thing mentioned about ALDI coming to Ocean Grove for over a year now. In a previous story in your newspaper, you mentioned that ALDI had a site in Ocean Grove and nothing more since has been seen until now. It seems that ALDI and the City of Greater Geelong are all big on rhetoric but nothing has been set in concrete. It’s all very well for Cr Jan Farrell to be upbeat and positive about the potential of ALDI having a presence in Ocean Grove, but the fact of the matter is that it’s all pious platitudes and nothing else has occurred since your newspaper first mooted this possibility. As for shopping at ALDI in Ocean Grove, bring it on. I want to know like other residents when it will be open. Coles and Safeway have been ripping off consumers with high prices for years, so ALDI’s arrival here
is awaited with baited breath. Bruce R Williams, Ocean Grove Dear Editor We became regular Aldi customers after moving to Bendigo in early 2008. Since we returned to live in Ocean Grove in December 2009 we have continued to patronise Aldi at their Newcomb store, where we see many other Ocean Grove residents also shopping. We shop at Aldi because of the combination of significantly lower prices coupled with exceptional quality over a wide range of foodstuffs and goods. An Aldi store in Ocean Grove would be a valuable asset to the town; would allow us to shop locally instead of travelling to Newcomb each fortnight; and would attract other customers from Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Drysdale and Barwon Heads. Michael Murfitt & Kaye Lont, Ocean Grove
Dear Editor In my opinion the only thing that Ocean Grove is missing is an Aldi Store. For the past few years I have been shopping at the Aldi store in Newcomb and have always been impressed by the quality of the food, especially the fruit and vegetables. They are fresh and last twice or three times as long as produce bought from Coles! It is great to always see that the majority of the produce is also grown in Victoria. Once you get used to the store it is easy to shop in and the checkout queues may seem long, but they can certainly put your groceries through the checkout very quickly. Although you have to pack your own groceries, there is never the problem in having your bread squashed, or your cold products mixed up with your canned food! As to where it should be, I would have really liked to have seen it built on the site instead of ‘Target’.
Happy Aldi Shopper Ocean Grove Dear Editor We are a family of six and would be thrilled to have an ALDI Store in Ocean Grove. We currently shop in Newcomb which is too far away and ideally a store in Ocean Grove would
be fantastic. We spend approximately $350 per fortnight and think the area behind the Zebra Bar would be an ideal location or in the Industrial Estate somewhere. Bring it on, I say! Tony Rolfs, Ocean Grove

Set for year end finish THE new and improved Club Grove is getting close to completion, writes Carly Helweg. Despite the recent rain and bad weather, the $6 million project will be completed on schedule and budget in 12 weeks time. Bruce Mansfield from 3BM Design and Construct said the new Club Grove will be unlike any other venue throughout the region or Victoria. “It’s a high quality design, lots of timber features, high quality carpets and tiling,
very little is off the shelf,” he said. Looking very different to the original Clubhouse built in 1954, the new Club Grove will have a more contemporary look with the use of external sandstone and wooden features. The project has employed about 120 tradesmen, the majority of which are local and have been working hard to keep the project on schedule despite 12 rain days. “We’ve made up the progress and kept to the
time frame really well,” said Bruce. General Manager Michael Lewis said that the club’s members were very excited about their new venue. “The members are ecstatic,” he said. “Even those who are in Queensland soaking up the sun are hitting the website to keep up to date with what’s going on and sending through messages.” Club Grove remains open throughout and the refurbishments are due to be completed early December.

TARA Lynch has recently moved to Ocean Grove and will be offering dance/yoga classes for children at KYO. Tara has had 15 years experience as a performing arts teacher and performer and is a teacher at Kardinia International College and Impetus Dance Geelong. The classes will combine stretch and flexibility training with high energy, fun dance movement. Students will learn many styles each week such as hip-hop, jazz, contemporary and
musical theatre. The focus is not on concerts, sewing or sequins but learning dance phrases, collaborating with the teacher with the future possibility of community and festival performances. Classes are designed for boys and girls and for all ability levels. Students will learn about movement dynamics, explore partner work, use fabric and properties such as pom poms and ribbons and work to a variety of music genres. Details KYO 5256 2723.
A NEW initiative will help struggling people to do their weekly shopping. Ocean Grove Community Enterprise is helping support a volunteer mini bus which will take the elderly or those with mobility issues to the town centre and back again. OGCE (through the Bendigo Bank fundraising program) will provide $5000 a year to the project, designed to help fill the gap that local public transport leaves. OGCE chairman Jon Mamonski said that the lack of public transport is a major concern for the town. “The Ocean Grove Community Enterprise realized that local transport has long been a challenge for people living here,” he said. “The whole point of the exercise is for people who struggle to get to the shops.” Geelong City Council provides mini buses to organisations and after a successful trial run in Leopold, the decision was
made to implement the system on the Bellarine Peninsula. “It’s a very exciting
project in a sense that it’s a clever use of resources and funding,” Jon said. Jon said they already had interest of volunteers to drive the buses which they hope will be running by Christmas.

Bellarine Secondary College Assistant Principal, Jon Shepherd with Tracie Mitchell, a staff member of the Australian Federal Police and ThinkUKnow volunteer.
Cyber bully forum A CYBER bullying forum has encouraged local parents to keep their children safe on the internet, writes Carly Helweg. About 30 parents and guardians from schools across the Bellarine Peninsula attended a ThinkUKnow information night at Bellarine Secondary College on September 8. Tracie Mitchell, a staff member of the Australian Federal Police and ThinkUKnow volunteer, hosted the session covering information from cyber bullying, Facebook and instant messaging, to protection from online sexual predators. Tracie said the main message for the group is that communication is the key to keeping children safe online. “Overall we encourage you to communicate with your children, know what they’re up to,” she said. “Teaching them what’s appropriate and what’s inappropriate.”
Teens are spending more and more time accessing the internet, as a 2009 survey found on average 12-17 year olds use the internet 2.9 hours a day 6.3 days a week. The hours online may see children exposed to inappropriate internet content as well as allowing bullying to continue long after school has ended for the day. Tracie said that technology is allowing bullying to infiltrate 24 hours a day and many students try to cope with the harassment on their own when they should be telling their school and parents. She also recommends guardians take away teens’ mobile phones overnight. “Part of the bullying technique is to wake them up at night with an SMS,” she said. Bellarine Secondary College Assistant Principal, Jon Shepherd said that cyber bullying can affect any student at school. “In all secondary
schools, unfortunately cyber bullying is a major issue,” he said “The kids usually [have] a TV in their bedroom and they have a computer in their bedroom and they also have a mobile phone and mum and dad have no idea what they’re doing.” Schools have policies in place to help tackle harassment, cyber bullying and internet use but the AFP runs the information sessions to help bridge the gap between parents and students’ knowledge of the internet. Tracie said it’s important to inform parents who can tackle the issue at home. “Everyone’s educating the students, who’s educating the parents?” For more details visit www.thinkuknow.org.au Have you experienced cyberbullying? As Bolzano Restaurant moves towards its third year in Ocean Grove, customers regular and new will enjoy some exciting new enhancements. The restaurant will now have two areas: one for casual gathering and the other for dining. After a week’s closure, Bolzano recently opened with an exciting new look and feel with a warmly decorated feature wall and white linen table clothes. Hamish Hames, chef and owner, says: “Our customers will experience a new level of food, wine and service at Bolzano. We’re committed to serving the highest quality Italian dining on the Bellarine coast, so we felt that we needed to
give Bolzano a fresh face to meet that expectation. Our customers will now enjoy more traditional Italian fare in a great environment, better service standards, a great wine list, the ocean view, but at the same prices.” In the coming month, the entrance way will be transformed into a lounge area with the arrival of comfortable couches, coffee tables and bar stools, and new umbrellas out the front. Customers can enjoy a drink in the lounge, and order something from the light dining menu or move into the main dining area for the full menu. Please book ahead in the months leading up to summer.

Pirates of the airwaves
Ross Hannaford fronts the Scion Pirates during the reggae night at the Ocean Grove Hotel last Friday night.
ON a night when many people were in front of their TVs watching the footy, a merry band of pirates walked the plank into the Ocean Grove Hotel to watch Ross Hannaford and the Scion Pirates. The hotel staff, band members and behind the scenes staff had worked really hard on this event, decking the venue out to give it a dramatic West Indian feel. The hotel put on a Jamaican style menu consisting of Jerked Chicken Breasts, Jerked Pork and Lamb Curry – a variation on the traditional curried goat! Of course, for the less adventurous, traditional pub fare was also on offer. Dj Tom Noonan was on hand to provide entertainment during the meal and before the band took up their instruments. The Scion Pirates were first on stage and provided us with a great introduction into the reggae/jazz style of music.
The Pirates work extremely well together and provided everything from saxophones to double bass. Ross Hannaford came on board a few songs later and the band offered reggae music with a Bob Marley number thrown in for good measure. Later in the evening Jon Willard and Ross Hannaford entertained us with a really great funky solo. The second half of the evening was dominated by Ross Hannaford compilations, which was unfortunate, as I would have loved to have heard more of the reggae that the Scion Pirates are good at. One would be forgiven for thinking that the drive of the band was at the front of the house, when actually it was the engine room of the band that deserves the best mention. MM
pARTy coming to town centre OCEAN Grove’s Terrace shopping centre will become one big art gallery for a weekend at the end of next month. The Melbourne Cup weekend is pARTy weekend in Ocean Grove. The event is a developing partnership between the Ocean Grove Primary School, the Ocean Grove Arts Network and the businesses of The Terrace shopping centre. Students show their work at the primary school with an opening on the Friday night while local arts community vie for the prestigious Elvis Parsley Art Award by having their works hung in the shop
windows. The Elvis Parsley Award is a sculpture of a Terrace bollard. All works are for sale, so not only do artists have an opportunity to get out of their home studios to show their work, they have the opportunity to make a sale. Last year’s event was a huge success demonstrating the fantastic artistic talent living in our community. Entry forms are available from the Piping Hot Chicken Shop and Elvis Parsley and Grapesland. Entry deadline is Monday October 25 with works delivered to the Piping Hot Chicken Shop by October 27.

Hunting the truth about visitors NOW the topic of Huntsman Spiders may be lovely for many people, but I have 'big spider arachnophobia' so don't like huntsman spiders at all. The one in the photo was in my bathroom and I was shaking so much taking the photo that I'm amazed that it's not too fuzzy! In fact I felt very brave taking the photo! Huntsman Spiders can be found in the garden, in the house, and even in the car (yikes). You just never know when you are going to come across one, and I think that's half the problem with them. The reason that Huntsman Spiders are found indoors is that they don't catch their prey in a web, rather they chase and stalk their prey. They can move very quickly. There are approximately 100 species of Huntsman Spiders in Australia. Some can grow to 15 cms in length, but mostly they are 35-47mm in length. There are three types of Huntsman Spiders commonly found in Victoria, namely. 1) Holconia- Brown or grey in colour, with a large, beetle like body. 2) Neosparassus or Badge Huntsman- orange or pink in colour with a distinct black mark on the abdomen.
3) Delena cancerides- the largest of the huntsman spiders, growing to 35mm or more. It is flatter than the other spiders and has a dark orange head and black fangs. This huntsman doesn't often make it's way indoors (I think for this reason I like this one the best). I think that the huntsman in the photo is a Neosparassus, not that I looked for the 'badge' under the abdomen. The distinguishing feature of Huntsman Spiders is that the two front pairs of legs are obviously longer than the back two pairs of legs. The legs fan out sideways which enables them to move forwards, backwards as well as laterally. Huntsman spiders' legs are equipped with joints bending forward, as opposed to other spiders with joints running vertically, which allows them to fit into tight areas. By using this function, they can walk 'like a crab' instead of having legs that poke out and get them stuck. Their flat bodies allow them to live in narrow spaces and squeeze through small areas. Huntsman Spiders have eight dark eyes (in two rows of four). Their sight is apparently not as good as other spiders,
but they can see large objects such as humans and animals. I keep telling myself that I am much bigger than them and they would be more scared of me than what I am of thembut it doesn't work. Huntsman Spiders are hairy, in fact their bodies appear smooth but their legs are covered with hairy spines. Huntsman Spiders live in the loose bark of trees, in logs, under rocks, and on foliage. Some species of Huntsman dig burrows, with or without trapdoors. They eat insects, small lizards, cockroaches and frogs. They hold their victims in their fangs and inject venom to kill them. If they bite a human there is localised pain and swelling. Their venom kills small creatures but fortunately causes only localised pain in humans. Huntsman Spiders are eaten by birds, wasps and geckoes ( I always knew I loved birds for a very good reason). The Huntsman is mostly active at night, and they tend to hide during the day. They seek shelter before a rain storm has even begun, so they are like little weather predictors. They will often scurry off to find
This huntsman chose an Ocean Grove bathroom to go on the food chase.
shelter before it rains. Unfortunately, ‘shelter’often equates to moving to houses, sheds, and motor cars. I am one of those unfortunate people who have had a Huntsman Spider on my car windscreen visor, and I think that I was more hysterical than the spider appeared to be. The spider probably thought “who is this lunatic woman and why is she screaming?” before my neighbour saved the damsel in distress. The female Huntsman constructs a flat, oval egg sac, in which up to 200 eggs are laid. The sac is usually then placed in safe place such as
under a rock, and the female spider stands guard over the sac. If disturbed or threatened the female spider can become quite aggressive, and rear up on the hind legs. Other Huntsman carry their egg sac with them as they move about. Once the egg sac opens and the young emerge, the mother may stay with the young for a few weeks to guard them. The Huntsman moult their skin as they grow, and often discarded huntsman spider skins are seen in parks and on trees. They live for around
two years unless they decide to go under my car windscreen visor. Even though I don't like the Huntsman Spiders I think it's really important to treat them humanely. The spider above was captured in the bug catcher and released in the spare block behind our house. I think that killing these creatures with insect spray is terribly cruel - they suffer immensely before they die. Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal Crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove, plus the Riverside Camping area. Two Simple Actions to Help us Restore the Balance With Spring comes new life in all shapes and sizes, and our coastal reserves are no different. Many species of mammals and birds are gearing up for the pending arrival of their young. As our reserves blossom with new life, brings increased pressures and challenges for our native wildlife. Along the 13 kilometres of coastal Crown land we manage on behalf of the State we have responsibility to assist in the protection of wildlife. Two key threatening processes take place during Spring. One is the increase in predator numbers within our coastal reserves, and the other is the misunderstanding within our community on swooping birds. Cats The domestic cat (Felis catus) has been listed as a key threatening process to native wildlife under both Commonwealth and State legislation. Natural and introduced predator numbers within our coastal reserves will increase with the onset of the availability of food sources. Domestic cats are often seen roaming through our coastal reserves, and have the potential to deplete wildlife populations and even cause local extinction of species. In addition to depleting wildlife, cats can develop a disease called ‘toxoplasmosis’ caused by a parasite found in their faeces. This parasite is then passed on to native wildlife that come into contact with those faeces, affecting their central nervous system and organs, which can lead to blindness and death. The City of Greater Geelong this year, introduced a cat curfew. Such control programs, and responsible pet ownership can reduce the number of roaming and feral cats, and lessen predation and disease transfer to our wildlife.
Swooping Birds Animals like humans have a natural instinct to protect their young. As we lose more suitable habitat for breeding ground for our many native species, birds in particular are forced to breed in areas heavily utilised by humans. The more a nesting bird is disturbed, increases the birds need to swoop to protect its home and it's young. Native birds are highly protective of their eggs, nest and young and will often 'swoop' unsuspecting passer-by, sometimes inflicting injury. Only a small percentage of birds attack during spring as a warning to ward off intruders to their territory. For those who encounter this behaviour, it can be a shock. The best strategies are to avoid the area completely and not try to scare, attack or remove the bird. Native birds are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, and it is an offence to harass or destroy native birds or their eggs. To educate the community and create awareness on where swooping birds may pose a risk to humans, the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) has launched the Victorian Magpie Map, which is available for Victorians to report the locations of swooping birds. DSE also has available from their website the 'Swoop Off Kit' that includes helpful hints, tips, images and cut out “eyes” to stick on your bike helmet, that may help to discourage some birds from swooping. To report a swooping incident by any species of bird, I encourage you to contact the DSE Customer Service Centre on 136 186, or visit their website, www.dse.vic.gov.au, so it can provide advice to the community on any swooping hotspots and educate local communities on how to survive the swooping season.
Ensuring your domestic cat is confined at night and remains on your property during the day, and avoiding known swooping bird areas, will place less pressure on our already stressed wildlife populations. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on. 5254 1118. Having the run of the toy shop MICK and Maura Donohue have recently taken over the Ocean Grove toy shop in Park Lane. Mick (pictured above) said he had ‘many’ new plans for Supertoys which is just along from the Bendigo Bank. “As a parent I have taken a great interest in toys and hope to provide the Grove with quality toys that are a little quirky, educational and just plain fun. “The store is the only stockist of Lego on the Bellarine peninsula and I will continue to stock this great product as well as a range of beach toys, puzzles, games and hope to add quality toys that are a little different than the run of the mill toys found in the chain stores.” Mick said he would welcome
any ideas from the customers on what they would like to have in store as that is their aim to please the customer and make the toy shop a fun place to visit. “I am a novice in the toy industry having worked in many different areas from Casino Surveillance, running a travel company in Africa ,public servant and believe I know what good customer service is. I have always enjoyed trying something different and the fact that I haven’t grown up yet I thought a toy store would be the ideal vehicle for me. “I, my wife Maura and my toy tester son Ronan, eight, have been in Ocean Grove for eight years moving down here from Melbourne. We love the casual atmosphere and the friendliness
of the people as well as the wide open spaces. “My passions outside the new business are Golf where I am a member of Thirteenth Beach Golf Club, bike riding, surfing (very badly), swimming and generally just keeping fit. I can often be seen plodding along the beach on a Saturday morning running off the good life. I also love to be involved with my son’s endeavours, which have included the quality swimming, gymnastics and indoor soccer programs offered at the leisure centre and anything else he has a go at. “You will find me or my wife in store most days as well as some local staff Jacqui and Jade who will endeavour to make the toy
store a fun place to visit. I am still looking for teenage staff to work over the summer months so if you are positive and willing to work drop into the shop.. “I would love to get involved in sponsorship within the town as I believe that is part of the duty of the local store owner as I hope to support the people that support me. I am happy to listen to any sponsorship requests. “We have a layby service at the store as well as social/ sporting club service where we will choose a toy and wrap it for Christmas breakups etc. “Also I will be setting up a birthday register where there will be great benefits to the birthday boy and girl.”
wholesaling business that operates throughout Australia, with over 200 branches in all states and territories. AWM Ocean Grove is the 4th branch to be opened in the Geelong area with branches in Grovedale, Geelong West and North Geelong. The new store will be managed by Simon Paatsch, with James Stephenson as its onsite supervisor. Simon currently manages the Grovedale branch and say’s that the opening of the Ocean Grove store was inevitable, given the growth on the Bellarine Peninsula. James Stephenson commenced his employment with AWM in 2005 at their Grovedale branch as a driver/storeman for the first 18 months, where he then moved into sales in 2007.
In 2008 he further progressed into the assistant manager position, focusing more on project quoting and purchasing. He has now undertaken the role of supervisor at the new Ocean Grove store in Sinclair St. Currently James lives in Grovedale, however is looking forward to making a move to Ocean Grove within the next 12 months. He has just become engaged to his future wife Joanne and in his spare time he enjoys surfing and is a volunteer lifeguard at the Bancoora Surf Life Saving Club. On the weekends James also umpires local footy, and eagerly follows the Geelong Cats. AWM’s main market is electrical and data contractors. The electrical industry has been serviced by AWM for over 35 years in the Geelong region,
with small domestic and large industrial customers, as well as cash sale customers. AWM Ocean Grove’s main focus will be to service the entire Bellarine Peninsula. Bellarine Peninsula Electricians could normally expect to wait at least an hour for deliveries from Geelong Electrical Wholesalers. With the new AWM Ocean Grove store fully stocked with cable, lighting and all the popular brands of electrical accessories including Clipsal, HPM and Crompton, Bellarine Peninsula Electricians will have an experienced electrical wholesaler in their own backyard. AWM Ocean Grove is located at 7 Sinclair Street Ocean Grove, next door to Splish Splash Car Wash and in the same estate as Reece Plumbing.

The name’s the same but not the game
Rising star in the hoops HER name is Jess Watson, and she sails over hoops not over water. Unlike her namesake who became the youngest person to sail around the world unassisted, this Jess Watson is making an indelible mark on the basketball court. “I get lots of comments about the name Jess Watson – There has been game previews and I even heard a joke about me sailing into whatever city we were playing against,” the 19-year-old laughed. The Ocean Grove local earlier this month took out the prestigious Youth League Women Rising Star and won her team’s

MVP after her involvement with the Young Geelong Lady Cats Under 23 team. Perhaps the teenager’s biggest accolade to date was her naming as the All Star forward for the League. She hopes to one day represent the Geelong senior Lady Cats. “It will be good to get a game or two in the (senior Lady Cats) and still play in the Under 23’s at the same time,” Jess said. Her road to success is even the more impressive after Jess overcame a major injury setback last year.
Jess who has been playing basketball for 10 years, endured a serious knee reconstruction after she tore her ACL in a match and spent 10 months on the sidelines. “I tore my ACL playing one game and I didn’t really know what had happen and I kept playing for a few months,” she said. “And eventually I went and saw a surgeon and they told me I needed to stop playing – And I had surgery and I came back after 10 months.” Her mum Debbie says Jess thoroughly deserves all of her awards that have come her way. “It is basically all the hard work Jess has done, and her dedication,

MASSIVE SAVINGS!
Reports: Surfside Aqua – All the players were fantastic. They played a great game, which was so close and regardless of the way it went, I liken it to a good footy game. Well done girls. – Charley Grasso (Coach) Little Diamonds – The girls
played incredibly well. It was probably the best game they have played all season! Everyone put all their effort into the game. Congratulations to them – Chris Shockley (coach)
her wanting to be the best she can be,” Debbie said. The mature tall youngster who stands at over six foot has four other siblings Samantha 21, Darcy, 16, and twins Rebecca, 14, and Mitchell, 14. Her brother Darcy also plays representative basketball in Geelong. Watson, who is an accredited Aussie Hoops basketball coach, has entered her second year studying Commerce at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. Fifthy league title in a row SURFSIDE U16 girls soccer team have completed another very successful year. Finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season gives them the League Championship title for the fifth time in the eight years since the all girls competition commenced. This year’s squad was led by senior players Maddie Bennett (who won the league best & fairest award), Alisha Grant, Claudia Kelly and Nina Hamilton-Grundy, however the success achieved was as a result of everyone in the squad contributing, including first

year players Meredith Plummer, Ally Norris, and Jess Black. The season came to a fitting close last week with the play offs between the top four teams. Surfside narrowly missed out on taking the clean sweep after Surfcoast deservedly won the final 2-1, with both teams giving everything they had for the full 70 minutes. Congratulations to Surfcoast, Surfside, and all the other clubs for making the U16 girls a very competitive competition throughout the season.

Conern at fixture delay A LEADING local cricket identity is unhappy with the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association (BPCA) for delaying the 2010/11 season A-Grade draw. Ocean Grove Cricket Club president Lucas Baulch believes a number of BPCA clubs had raised concerns over the lateness of the fixture. While the BPCA had sent off a draft draw to all clubs, the Ocean Grove Voice had not received a copy of the 2010/11 draw before going to press on Sunday night. The new season has been put back one week to accommodate for the 2010 UCI Cycling Championships which starts on Wednesday September 29 and ends on Sunday October 3. The opening BPCA Round one fixture begins on Saturday
October 9, less than three weeks away. “It’s definitely disappointing the league has not finalised a draw for the new season,” Baulch said on Friday. “It has not been the ideal way to start the season that is for sure, we’ve been pushing for sometime to have a draw complete. “I was certainly expecting something by now.” BPCA league secretary Daryl Burns remained defiant saying the new draw would be formally ratified this week and all clubs would be informed of the new fixtures. He said the league had toyed with the idea of playing an 11 round season fixture due to the Geelong road cycling event being staged in the region. “Obviously we are affected by

little bit more sweeter.” Reardon shares a special bond with Under 18 Grubbers triple premiership winning coach Matt Tyrrell, as both were part of Ocean Grove’s flag treble from 2008 to 2010. “I have become very close with Matt, he is one of my best mates,” Reardon said. In 2010, Reardon who played seven senior matches for the Grubbers, was used in a variety of positions. Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor said the biggest challenge for Reardon next season will be to find a permanent role in the senior team. “He’s a great kid - the problem will be finding him a spot when he enters senior footy," McGregor said. “Sometimes his body let him down during games at senior level. “He can play in many positions - Half-back flank, on the ball, sometimes up forward.” Outside of football, Reardon, a keen boxer, works as a carpenter. Next year Reardon intends to study architecture at the Deakin Waterfront Geelong campus.

HE is only 18, but Kane Reardon celebrated a rare premiership triple treat following the Grubbers Under 18 Grand Final win against Drysdale. The former St Joseph's College student won an historic premiership medallion for the third year running as part of Ocean Grove's hat-trick of flags from 2008 to 2010. The versatile Reardon won his first flag with the Under 18's Grubbers at only aged 16. He also claimed the Grubbers Under 18 best and fairest in 2008. Reardon was one of the Grubbers’ best players at this year’s Grand Final leading the stats collecting 19 possessions and taking six marks. The strongly built teenager rated this year’s Grubbers triumph on September 11 as the best premiership win he had been involved with since he started playing football. “I reckon by far it was the best one – the first two premierships we always had the cattle, we were the best,” Reardon said. “It was more of a relief to win the first two flags in the Under 18’s – but then this year we have had to work harder for it. “Going into this year’s Grand Final we were the underdogs and the fact we beat Drysdale it was a

Great Grub’s in the making C E L E B R AT I O N S continued to flow over last week following Ocean Grove's historic Under 18 Bellarine Football League premiership win over ladder leaders Drysdale on Saturday September 11. The young Grubbers who finished in second place, defeated overwhelming favourites Drysdale, who went through the 2010 season undefeated, etched their name in the history books winning their third consecutive flag in the last three years. Since the BFL Under 18’s formed in 1982, the current Ocean Grove team becomes only the fourth side to win a hattrick of premierships Ocean Grove joins Newcomb's trifecta of flags between 1982 and 1984, Drysdale's premiership reign period from 1987 to 1989 and also Ocean Grove's dominant five-year Under 18 reign from 1995 to 1999. Ocean Grove Under 18 co-coach Rory Nicol said it was the best premiership he has ever
been involved with. “I honesty thought when we had that double chance (and lost to Geelong Amateur in the first week of the finals) that would be a good thing for us,” said Nicol after the Grubbers 5.9.39 win over Drysdale 5.4.34 at Torquay's Spring Creek Reserve. “After the loss to Amateur and when we did not have that double chance it was just do or die, and that attitude came out of us and we had nothing to lose and had a crack.” Drysdale had beaten Ocean Grove on both occasions in 2010, in Round one the Hawks won by 32 points and in Round 10 they backed it up to win by 13 points. “It’s just one side we have got the hoodoo against that is Drysdale - they are such a good side,” Ocean Grove cocoach Matt Tyrrell said. “The belief had not been there and we had not beaten them before,"
Tyrrell said. Drysdale dominated play in the first quarter, but failed to convert in front of goal to lead the Grubbers at the first break. Ocean Grove kept the ladder leaders scoreless in the second quarter with the Grubbers taking a one-point advantage at the main break. “I think in the first half and first two-and-ahalf quarters, Rory and I agreed we should be five goals down here,” Tyrrell said. “But we stuck to it, and to our boys’ credit Drysdale could have put us away and they didn’t.” Once the half time siren sounded tensions boiled over between the rival clubs with a nasty exchange taking place in the centre of the ground, before the players entered the rooms for a spell. Drysdale kicked with the aid of an advantageous breeze in the third term to lead the Grubbers at three-quarter time by three points. While Ocean Grove didn’t make huge inroads on the scoreboard in
the third quarter, the Grubbers pressed hard with numerous forward 50 entries kicking against the wind. In the final quarter enter Mitch Evans, who won the medal for being the best player on the ground in Under 18 BFL Grand Final, kicked an amazing goal once play resumed at the beach end and you felt the tide was turning. Evans, who took out the 2010 Ocean Grove Under 18 Best and Fairest last month, was thrilled with the result and his goal that helped shaped the match. “I have never played in a winning final, let alone a Grand Final, I’m just beside myself,” Evans said.
“Honestly (with that goal) I was trying to centre it, I was thinking of kicking to the hot spot - the goal square. “In the back of my mind I was hoping it would go through and thought the wind was going our way.” Five goals were kicked in the final quarter and although Ocean Grove gained the early ascendancy Drysdale fought the game out well, but in the end it was the Grubbers’ day. Dual Under 18 Grubbers premiership player and captain Kaiden Long, triple premiership Grubber Kane Reardon, and Nathan Walter were amongst the best players.

By Mark Heenan OCEAN GROVE Under 18 Triple premiership winning coach Matt Tyrrell is looking forward to his permanent assistant coaching role with the Grubber seniors in 2011. Tyrrell joins playing assistants Rowan O’Callaghan and new Grubber recruit Shane Jack next season, in a non-playing assistant coaching role. “The biggest challenge is for the new recruits to help the young kids step up from Under 18’s into the senior footy ranks,” Tyrrell said. The 32-year-old was a member of the Grubbers senior premierships in 2000 and 2001. Senior coach Cameron McGregor said Tyrrell’s coaching and playing experience will be invaluable to the playing group in 2011. “Matt is a good guy - he will be a brilliant addition to the senior coaching panel, he has a great rapport with the young guys," McGregor said last week. "He done an apprenticeship at junior level and done a fantastic job with the Under 18's. "I think he is good back up to have for me, he wants to be a senior coach.” Meanwhile Tyrrell has endorsed his Under 18 co-coach Rory Nicol to take on the reigns in 2011. “He is ready to coach the Under 18’s by himself if he wants,” Tyrell said. Nicol took on a greater responsibility and shared the duties with Tyrrell this season following his assistant coaching role with the Under 18’s in 2009. • Rory Nicol was announced as the new Under 18 coach at the presentation night on Saturday September 18.
