Rubber ducky rescue after capsize

RESCUED No takers for beach haven

STILL ON THE MARKET: Number 57 The Esplanade, Ocean Grove.

A TWO bedroom holiday home set on some of the most desirable Ocean Grove real estate failed to reach its reserve on Saturday. Expectations had been high that the 950block could reach as much as $3million but on the day it failed to attract interest on a $2.4m starting bid. The home was previously owned by Mrs Fred Carrollo and her husband Bruno. Both have now passed away but local Anna Portelli was a family friend and recalls it as a happy house that led straight down through fruit trees to the beach. The house was passed in by agent the Professionals Geelong.

OCEAN Grove Surf Lifesavers rescued two men clinging to their upturned boat on Saturday.

The boat had turned over in high winds 800m off Grove Main Beach. It was reported by people at the Dunes who called 000 alerting the lifesavers and Coastwatch volunteers. It is uncertain how long the men had been there. The men are not thought to be local and were uninjured. The boat is believed to have washed up at Point Lonsdale.

Toilet block success OCEAN Grove’s decrepit public toilet block will be replaced by the end of 2011. The dated building in the centre of The Parade’s shopping centre car park will be demolished and replaced by parking spaces, with the new facilities moved closer to The Parade. The $320,000 project is due to begin in July and estimated to be completed by October, well before the summer holiday period. The project will be funded by the City of Greater Geelong, with the planned relocation designed to improve the safety and pedestrian flow through the car park. Councillor Jan Farrell said the new toilets would be a marked improvement on the existing toilet block. “The new toilets will be accessible for people with disabilities, and the new layout has allowed for two extra disabled car park spaces near the

Garden interest growing

MORE than 30 people have expressed interest in an Ocean Grove community garden at a recent public meeting. Interim committee group manager Peter Gumley said he was very pleased with the number of people who attended the meeting. “I’m very happy, interest is spreading and it looks like it’s sustained,” he said. Peter presented the proposal to a group of 18 attendees, research and information of other community garden examples in the hope of inspiring their interest in the project. “I was there to prick the imagination of people

pedestrian crossing,” she said. Cr Farrell said the construction would also have a smaller environmental footprint with the solar lighting and bike rack installation. “Overall this building will have a much smaller footprint, in terms of

both the environmental impact and physical space that it takes up in the car park,” she said. The community is invited to an information night to be held on Monday, February 28, from 5pm at the City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre

on Presidents Avenue. Draft plans will be on display and City of Greater Geelong staff as well as Clrr Farrell will be on hand to answer any questions on the project. Residents can provide feedback online at www.geelongaustralia. com.au/council/yoursay/

who would end up designing the garden, let them know the issues and how to shape the process of the garden” he said. The community garden will work as a sub-group within the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre, a partnership Peter is excited about. “They have a good reputation, they’re well respected and do great things in the community,” he said. The next step to the process is a formal

election of a managing committee that will help to organise and run the community garden. Peter said he hoped this could be done within the next six to eight weeks. “In the interim we can start on negotiations and information exchange with CoGG (City of Greater Geelong),” he said. He said choosing a site for the project was a high priority but so far there had only been informal talks with the

city. “Ideally it will be located close to the city centre,” he said. “There are several sites which may be suitable but formal discussions with CoGG need to take place to determine the availability of the sites.” For more information or to join the Ocean Grove Community Garden mailing list, email Peter Gumley at peter.gumley@bigpond. com.au

quick news CFA calls report THE CFA responded to three call-outs in Ocean Grove in the past two weeks. There was an incident in Kingston Downs Drive on February 17, although the reason was not specified. Units attended a flammable liquid spill on February 9, in Sunset Strip, and on February 13 units responded to another flammable liquid spill, this time on the corner of Orton and Wallington streets. Despite the relatively mild weather for this time of year, fire restrictions are still in force on the Bellarine.

Landcape centre open KEEN gardeners are invited to the grand opening of the new Ocean Grove Garden and Landscaping Centre. The garden centre will have opening day sales over the Labour Day long weekend as well as a sausage sizzle to raise money for Victorian flood victims. The landscaping centre offers plants, pavers, pots and water features and has plans to specialise in children’s cubby houses and al fresco dining and refrigeration. Owner Ashleigh Murphy has run his own Ocean Grove-based landscaping business for more than 20 years before opening his first retail garden centre this year. “It’s pretty exciting, we’re already open and trading now so hopefully it all comes together,” he said. The Ocean Grove Garden and Landscaping Centre is open seven days a week on the corner of Shell and Banks roads.

Old Westpac bank site to be demolished GEELONG City Council has received a planning application to build a three-storey retail and apartment block on The Terrace. The old Westpac bank site at 78 The Terrace will be demolished and

replaced with three ground floor retail and four residential spaces pending an application decision. According to the 3D artist impression by Michael Higgins Building Design, the construction

will bring the building’s façade in line with the neighbouring businesses. This will result in a loss of open space historically used for local events and fundraisers. The planning application will go to the

City for a decision after March 2. Copies of the planning permit for the proposal are available for viewing at the City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre on Presidents Avenue.

Headshave Musicians Sarah Carroll and Chris Wilson with Ocean Grove Primary School pupils Veronica, Sabine and Tom.

Musical core of Apple Fair OCEAN Grove’s Apple Fair is just a fortnight away and this year the organisers have pulled off their biggest musical scoop – getting husband and wife Chris Wilson and Sarah Carroll together for a lunchtime show. Both musicians have earned wide acclaim separately so it will be a rare treat to see them performing in Ocean Grove on the same stage. Crowd favourites and ‘old boys’ The Rustys will also be a highlight.” “At Ocean Grove Primary School we’re passionate about our music and we’ve got a great line up all day

on the Apple Fair stage”, said Apple Fair coordinator Andy McNeilly. “So bring the family, have fun on the carnival rides and kids activities. Then pull up a hay bale with some great food and enjoy the music.” “New to the Apple Fair this year is Laser Strike sure to be a hit with older kids.” The Apple Fair is on Sunday March 13 from 10am. There will be a gold coin donation on the gate. For all the latest Apple Fair news and photos check out their new facebook page at www.facebook.com/ oceangroveapplefair.

Pack your community picnic THE Ocean Grove community will have an extra hour to enjoy the free Community Showcase Picnic in the park on Sunday 3 April. Richard Grimmett of the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove said earlybirds will be very welcome – particularly if they are community groups expressing interest in participating. He said the time is right and the weather is booked, “The idea behind the picnic is to showcase the many and varied community groups in our township, “We would like any groups

interested in being involved to get on board and get in touch with our organising committee.” Bringing together the different representative groups of Ocean Grove is an idea that originated with local councillor Jan Farrell, in conversation with the Ocean Grove Community Association (OGCA). The concept grew to include any and all local groups, explained Chairman of the OGCA John Fendyk. “The intent is to connect residents to the various community groups and provide linkages

between people,” John said. “We are calling on all the community groups in our area to ‘showcase’ their club or organisation so that the people of Ocean Grove can learn what networks and organised group activities are available.” “The Community Showcase Picnic in the park is on from 12 noon at Ocean Grove Park, corner of Presidents Avenue and The Avenue. To register, or for more details please call Richard on 0439 484 437, mail to Picnic, PO Box 210, Ocean Grove, 3226 or email richard@memories.net.au.

Jury’s out on Watch future THE new Baillieu Government is yet to announce promised changes that could fill Ocean Grove’s Neighbourhood Watch void, but Chief Commissioner Simon Overland had hinted that initiatives are being worked on. The Chief Commissioner was told that Ocean Grove no longer has any active Neighbourhood Watch groups after they gradually disbanded. The groups have cited a lack of police attendance and the end of street-by-street crime reports as the main causes. Local Neighbourhood Watch representatives say officers were told not to attend their meetings anymore. While Mr Overland was far from supportive of the demands for streetby-street information, he said: “There was certainly no direction around police not attending. “We have changed the provision of statistics. We’ve got a lot of data

online now, it’s freely available to people and we’ve suggested that’s where they can go to find out the sort of information they are after. (We did this ) because (street-by-street reports) are resource intensive for us to do and the evidence hasn’t actually shown a lot of return to us in doing that. So the data is still there but in a slightly different way. Certainly we are happy to come along to Neighbourhood Watch meetings. I think in the areas where it works it works really well but across the state the program has been dying because of lack of participation. It is a broader thing, they’ve been struggling to get them, get them involved.” However Mr Overland said he believed there are opportunities to reinvigorate Neighbourhood Watch. “I think there’s some work being done around that now. There is some new thinking out and hopefully it will work.” He also confirmed

Victorian Police Commissioner Simon Overland was in Geelong recently and took questions on the future of Neighbourhood Watch.

that related to initiatives coming from the new state government. In pre-election statements, Premier Ted Baillieu pledged to ‘restore Neighbourhood Watch access to local crime stats’. Baillieu said in January 2010 that: “Denying access to street-by-street crime information is part of John Brumby’s plan to hide the truth about the types of crime affecting communities… we will give them

Bill Summers. (Neighbourhood Watch groups) crucial access to local crime information.” A state government spokesperson was unable to confirm whether or

not this was the case at this stage. Local Neighbourhood Watch stalwart Bill Summers and his wife Kath are doing their best to keep their group running but it does not meet anymore and has no membership. Bill said he was disappointed with how volunteers had been treated but would respond positively if more support and encouragement was offered to local organisations.

and fundraising clubs but we’re not into fundraising, we’re a social club,” Margaret Grace said. At one of the final committee meetings, 10 members sat around looking at photos and reminiscing about the outings they took together. “We’ve made lots of friends and had lots of trips along the way,” said

Mrs Peacock. “When I look back we were all so young.” Most of the members were aged in their sixties in the beginning however the average age of the group is now 83 years with many women well into their nineties. “Everybody’s getting too old but these things happen, life goes on,” said Mrs Evans.

Don’t pull the lever on Hand Brake Turn Wedding bells

IT will certainly be a tragedy if Geelong’s Hand Brake Turn youth program has to shut due to lack of funding. If ever a case existed where the long term benefits go beyond basic bean counter calculations - this is it. Hand Brake Turn rescues young unemployed people, gives them a sense of worth, builds confidence and sets them up with contacts and life skills that can help them through the rest of their days. They almost routinely arrive disheveled, careless but hardly carefree, in some cases unaccountable - but they leave with at least a taste what the rewards of life could be. They may not choose to take it, but for some it’s the first sniff they will have had. This understates the case by miles. You have to see the outcomes to believe them and it doesn’t just affect the participants. Parents have an awakening too. Mentors (the author of this article took part for three months) leave with an understanding that they didn’t really understand before. Even the friends of those who reach the end of the course begin to get a yearning in themselves. It’s contagious. We are talking about $350,000 a year. There’s just something about this project that creates a magic that works. Come on Mr Cheeseman and Mr Marles, do the right thing and bring some influence to bear. And, yes, even young Bellarine people have benefited and can benefit. Ed.

Saturday Feb 12th was a special day for Aidan Hachem & Joanne Olsen, they both played juniors at the Ocean Grove Tennis Club with Joanne also playing seniors and Wednesday nights. Her mother, Denise, is of course a legend at the club. Joanne was a stunning bride and Aidan a handsome groom, their daughter Isabelle made a gorgeous flowergirl. Denise & Ray looked lovely and brother Paul and sister Richelle scrubbed up nicely. Patty & Badih Hachem looked great on the day as well as brothers Mazen & Fabian with their partners Ashleigh and Nicky & daughter Alana.

Ship tilt worry ignored LOCAL divers have dismissed recent claims that the ex-HMAS Canberra dive site is a threat to visitors. Parks Victoria issued a statement on their website in January stating parts of the ship had come away and warning divers to exercise caution when visiting the site. A state government website reported that the helicopter hanger on the port side of the HMAS Canberra, scuttled in October 2009, “has separated from the main super structure”. A statement said: “As a result the frames and plating on the port side are moving 30mm vertically and 150mm horizontally which may pose a hazard to divers in this area as the structure may move unexpectedly. “There are a large number of loose items in the lower deck and mid-ships areas of the vessel including lockers, cabinets, panelling and ducting.” “It is strongly recommended that recreational divers stay away from these areas of the vessel to avoid the risk of personal injury”. The No Ships Action Group based in Avoca Beach on the Central Coast in NSW has used the HMAS Canberra as an example in protesting the scuttling of sister ship, HMAS Adelaide off its coast. The action group reported the Canberra’s issues on their website two weeks ago saying:

“The vessel is now leaning over sharply and already beginning to break up which is creating debris in the ocean and serious risks for divers.” Managing Director of the Dive Victoria Group, Jason Salter, dismissed the claims that the Canberra was unsafe and said they were always aware the ship would tilt at 20 degrees because of the pointed hull. “It did that within a month of going down and has remained that way,” he said. “Basically the ship has settled the way we always thought it would, it is very stable and in its natural position.” Mr Salter said items were left in the ship to make it an interesting dive for visitors however they did not pose a threat. “Everything has fallen and settled into its place, but there are no safety issues to divers,” he said. Mr Salter said he was aware of the warning issued by Parks Victoria but was adamant it was only there to cover the government group in the rare case someone was injured. “The safety warning given by Parks Victoria is a classic example of a government body covering their arses,” he said. “There is a little crack in one of the plates but it’s no big deal, it doesn’t open up on people, it’s just a crack in a joint.” Environment and Climate Change Minister Ryan Smith said he was aware of the caution

OCEAN Grove Salvation Army Op Shop was all ready to congratulate locals for doing the right thing and delivering donations during working hours. That was until they arrived on Monday morning last week to find a fresh stack of furniture, and clothing blocking their entrance. “We had to remove it to get the gate open,” said manager Jill Fryer. “The terrible thing is they left it right in front of a sign that says no after hours deliveries,” she said. “We are very flexible and will make a point of being here if people get in touch with us,” said Jill, “It’s such a shame because we’ve been doing really well.”

GONE FISHING: Barwon Coast has been helping inform recent regugees about fishing dos and don’ts.

Fishing for diversity BARWON Coast has been encouraging and helping educate newly arrived immigrants about the fish regulations and safe fishing practices. The foreshore manager is working in partnership with Diversitat, Fisheries Victoria, Parks Victoria, Bellarine Police and Fishcare Volunteer’s to conduct a total of six multicultural fishing days throughout the year thanks to a $4,000 grant from the Recreational Fishing Grants Program. “Most of these newly arrived

immigrants to our region are amongst the highest at risk of danger when visiting our coastline, and have little to no understanding of fishing regulations and safe fishing practices”, Maddie Glynn from Barwon Coast said. “Most of them are keen anglers in their home lands, but do not understand why fishing regulations exist, nor fish growth rates and the sensitive habitats of our cool temperate waters.” The fishing days have allowed Barwon Coast to educate

communities from Karen, Karenni, Afghanistan, Sudan and the Congo on our local coastal environments, beach safety and more importantly understanding and being aware of fishing responsibly. “The program aims to ensure that participants leave with a greater respect and appreciation of our natural environments, which will lead to greater fishing compliance rates through making informed decisions relating to our fisheries resources”, said Fisheries Officer Alan Ray.

Waging a war on mozzies

HAIR

ON HARBOUR

OCEAN Grovers are hiding indoors to escape the mozzie peril. For many, even the tried and true sprays are proving futile against the 10mm bloodsuckers. And the City of Greater Geelong has confirmed that the Grove and surrounding wetlands are providing the most prolific breeding grounds in the region. So what is the City doing to combat these tiny terrors? Here Steve Sodomaco, health and local laws manager, addresses some of the questions.

Are mosquito numbers on the increase?

Mosquito levels have been higher than last season. There is more water lying around the municipality than has been seen in the past 10 years. This provides ideal breeding areas for mosquitoes. However, recent monitoring of the major wetland breeding sites has shown little larval development. More mosquitoes are developing from small pools of water around households and neighbourhoods than in previous years. This is

due to the large amount of rain leaving water in areas that don’t normally hold water, such as depressions and ponds and in household items like buckets and pot plants. This is why it is very important to inspect your yard.

How does the City go about counting or determining numbers?

Contractors monitor breeding sites by taking sample dips of larvae from water in places like wetlands, drains, easements and lakes. The number of larvae in each dip determines whether larvae levels at each site are classified as low, medium, high or extreme. How much does it cost?

About $250,000 a year in this region.

Does the City keep data on mozzies from a public health perspective?

All mosquitoes trapped in council’s surveillance program are sent to the Victorian Department of Health’s laboratories for disease testing as needed, including testing for Mycobacterium ulcerans.

What are our mozzie hot-spots?

area for mosquitoes in the City of Greater Geelong are the RAMSAR protected wetlands of Lake Connewarre and Swan Bay around Ocean Grove, Wallington, Barwon Heads and Pt Lonsdale, with additional protected wetlands in

Breamlea, Barwon Heads and St Leonards also major breeding areas. Because of their environmental significance, we are limited in the type of management we can do. We are only allowed to use the helicopter for

larval treatments between 15 August and 15 March each year and there are strict conditions on the type of products we use. Any areas close to the breeding grounds that are heavily vegetated provide ideal harbourage areas for adult mosquitoes.

Taxing for veterans EFFICIENCY drives to make better use of taxis have been given the thumbs down by their elderly customers. Ocean Grove veterans say they are suffering because the same taxis can no longer automatically pick them up after being taken to a medical appointment. According to Bellarine Peninsula Taxis, which is under the umbrella of the Geelong Taxi Network (GTN), this is thanks to recent changes in local taxi operation procedures. The Bellarine division claims they are facing restrictions on repeat Veteran’s Affairs customers and that they are currently not allowed to bring home elderly, Veterans Affairs, customers after dropping them off for medical appointments in Geelong. Ocean Grove taxi drivers say they were informed of changes by their managing body, GTN, on last year’s Melbourne Cup long weekend, upsetting both drivers and customers. Ocean Grove taxi driver Ron Flemming said after the merging of the Geelong and Bellarine companies in 2007, it was written that they would be allowed to bring customers back to Ocean Grove after taking them into medical appointments. “One of the things that transpired in the changeover was there was a written document that said any Bellarine car that takes a customer into Geelong for a medical appointment has first preference to bring that customer back,” he said. “Now no way shape or form are you allowed to bring anyone back from Geelong,” he said. Instead of customers calling their Bellarine driver directly after they’ve finished their appointment, the call

now must go through the Geelong dispatch centre and is given to the next available driver. Ron is angry that his customers must wait for an unfamiliar driver whilst he drives back to Ocean Grove with an empty car. “A lot of our customers are elderly, a lot of them are frail, a couple of them that I know of are vision impaired and a lot of the things we’ve done over the last couple of years is build up a rapore with these elderly people,” Ron said. “Why would you have a taxi come into Geelong and come back empty and then send a Geelong car back to the Bellarine with people in it and they can come back empty, now that doesn’t make sense to me at all.” Ron said he believed the GTN were the ones who instigated the changes. “I was always under the impression that it was a decision made by the GTN,” he said. “Why would Veterans Affairs bring in something that would upset their clients?” One of Ron’s regular Veterans Affairs customers is 88 year old Kathleen McLean who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease and is visually impaired. Mrs McLean’s daughter Kath McLean said she is frustrated by the system change after using Ron to attend medical appointments in Geelong for over two years. “Because Ron was always there and would help her in and I knew she would be in good hands, he is a very obliging man, he is fantastic,” she said. Kath said her mother had to attend multiple appointments in Geelong and never used to have to wait for her ride home

Mr Valentine said the

new system was to ensure efficiency in the taxi service around Geelong and the Bellarine. “The most efficient dispatch of taxi-cabs is ensuring that the closest taxi-cab available is sent to the passenger at the time they require a pickup,” he said. “Once the pickup is complete the taxi-cabs should then return to their designated area to carry on the service in that area for other passengers requiring transport.” The Department of Veteran Affairs has given an uncertain answer on whether passengers will be able to choose their own driver even with the new system in place. A spokesperson from

the Department of Veteran Affairs said the new transport booking system was rolled out on January 17 of this year in line with taxi booking arrangements across Australia. A statement from DVA said, “These arrangements will provide better oversight of trips being undertaken by DVA clients across the region at any time and ensure a more appropriate allocation of trips across providers.” “Eligible clients can also still arrange their own transport and seek reimbursement using the D800 Claim for Travelling Expenses form.”

The start of the Pub to Pub was just as elaborate this year, and resumed back at its traditional Barwon Heads site after a year away due to bridge works.

Ocean Grove Harriers staged their 17th annual Pub to Pub run on Friday night. Thirty-one runners pushed through the headwind to complete the 6.4km run from Barwon Heads pub to Ocean Grove pub. This year’s winner was the back marker Grant Simpson in a time of 25:47. The course is one of a kind and is

unique in that it travels between two pubs, in an east west direction, across a bridge, under two bridges and along a beach. The placegetters were: 1 Grant Simpson; 2. McGarrys James and Craig; 3. Andy Sattler; 4. Charlie Morgan; 5. Peter Woodruff; and 6 Iain Ross.

LOVING LIFE: Loretta Hart loves being by the coast and enjoys the opportunity to live on the land and work with the community.

The seachange provides the real change for life I GREW up in Belmont the youngest of seven children, holidaying at Anglesea for the six week summer holidays from Christmas until Australia Day. I attended St Bernard’s Primary school in Belmont, at which I later taught until it was amalgamated with Mercia in Highton and became Clairvaux. I spent my high school years at Clonard in West Geelong. We moved to Wallington in 2004 from Belmont. I grew up in Geelong and after moving away to uni and my first teaching position, in Coleraine, I moved back and married Matt in 1995. We were so young! We continued to live in Belmont in the house we bought from my Mum and Dad, yes the house I grew up in,

until we moved. My first memories of Ocean Grove are of coming down to visit my friend who lived down here. She lived off Presidents Avenue and it was very long and hilly. I remember it being a long walk back from the beach! When we moved to Wallington we enrolled our eldest son into kinder in Ocean Grove and so began our journeys along Grubb Road. I’ve travelled along that road many, many times now and remember it going from 70km to 80km to 100km to 80km to 60km as entering Ocean Grove. It was also quiet enough for people to overtake – almost unseen these days. Matt began working at Van Loon’s Nursery in 1994. About 10 years

later Tony and Marilyn Van Loon were looking to retire and pass their much-valued business on. At this time they offered the business for sale to Matt and, his now business partner, Heidi Martin. We made the decision to move to Wallington almost immediately. I was really looking forward to being closer to the beach and the seaside lifestyle. It’s funny to think that we live on five acres and have to drive to the beach, at least eight minutes away but it does feel like it’s a continuation of my backyard. I love seeing the sea every day. Matt and Heidi run the nursery and I look after the gift shop and some administrative duties. After 10 years

of teaching and being presented with a new business proposition I was keen to try my hand at something new. I get a lot of satisfaction from trying to figure out what our customers want or would like to buy as a gift. Retail is very different from teaching but having contact with people daily is what I really love. I get a real thrill when someone chooses something that I have chosen as just the thing for that spot in their room or just the perfect piece for their friend. I’ve taken on the gift shop more fully in the past two years and have enjoyed our buying trips enormously. Last year Heidi and I headed to Vietnam and Indonesia to find more unique pieces for the nursery. This trip

was all very hard work, but no-one seems to believe me! Another aspect of my role is to update the Facebook page. I admit I get a little addicted at times checking how many “friends” we have and posting all sorts of things but it’s all good fun. When it comes to retaining the small-town feel here, I don’t think you can put up the gates and say no one else can join us in our piece of paradise, now that we’re in. Ocean Grove will keep expanding. It’s inevitable that we will continue to grow. I’m sure there are lots of people who won’t be too happy but through this change there will be many benefits and the community will prosper.

Grove’s middle order batting duo Dave Turner and Mark Kenneady did the damage with a volley of sixes - one of which cleared the boundary, trees, road and landed in a neighbouring garden.

OCEAN Grove made it two Twenty 20 Big Bash premierships in a row with a dominating win over visitors Jan Juc last week. Intially Grove’s tight bowling and fielding kept Jan Juc pegged to 87 for their 20 overs. Grove were also looking a little too workmanlike until the batting partnership of Kenneady and Turner was kindled. After a couple of loose swings the boys fine tuned their armoury and then proceeded to redirect the ball out of the ground, again, and again and again. The further the ball went the louder the crowd cheers and the more frustrated the bowlers got. Grove cleaned about 40 runs in just a handful of overs. With four more Grove grade sides looking increasingly like qualifying for finals the Twenty 20 competition win may not be the only silverwear returing to the Memorial Ground.

Mark Kenneady’s stunning run out, that was ruled not out.

MAKE YOUR OWN MIND UP: The bales have gone before the bat reached the crease.

CELEBRATING SECOND TIME LUCKY: Kenneady scored an equally devastating run out just a few balls later.

Chain gang ICONIC Australian Blues Band Chain are set to play in Ocean Grove next month for one night only - Thursday March 10 they will play the Ocean Grove Hotel. The originators of ‘Oz Blues’, Chain, have reached a milestone in 2010 as they celebrate 42 years since first forming in 1968. They are still the only blues band in the world to have a number one on Australian charts (Black’n’Blue) as well as a number two (Judgement). Together with singer Matt Taylor another number one (I Remember When I Was Young) and the double gold album ‘Toward The Blues’ ensured them a place in rock history. With ‘Chain Awards’ honouring their achievements at the Australian Blues Festival (Goulburn) and as the first act listed in the new blues section of Screensound (National Archives) the accolades still continue. Founder member/ guitarist Phil Manning &

singer/harmonica player Matt Taylor each have highly successful careers as solo performers, and are regarded as among the finest exponents of their respective instruments this country has produced. Drummer Barry Harvey’s spectacular playing amazes audiences everywhere & together with the powerful drive of bassist Dirk Dubois, form the engine that motors the band through all their hits from the seventies to more recent Chain hits such as Spring Hill. Their new material retains the earthiness of the 70’s while including the insights and musicality expected from a lifetime of experience in the blues genre. These songs feature on their latest album titled ‘Sweet Honey’, and continue the tradition of ‘Oz-Blues’. Chain live is a great entertainment experience, and with four decades of albums & performances under their belt, it doesn’t get any better than this!

GOING FULL CIRCLE: Joy McPadden’s exhibition at Karingallery features artworks on circle canvas.

Circle work goes on show OCEAN Grove artist Joy McPadden is hosting an exhibition of her Full Circle artworks next month. The exhibition showcases acrylic works on beveled edge round canvas, as well as works on paper. Joy credits the starting point for most of her artworks as being in her heart and soul. It could be from a

dream, a conversation or something observed in nature, she said. Several paintings have an ethereal quality to them. Joy grew up on a farm in the foothills of the Otways. It was a great start in noticing different shades of colours in the nature around her. The influence of the ocean has increased her hues of blues, and added

the swirling of seaweed type forms into her recent paintings. A life-long love of eyes has also been an inspiration to Joy. Joy’s story of her art journey can be found in the recent Artist’s Palette magazine issue 93. In 2000 a highlight for Joy was winning the Barwon South West Women’s Health artwork competition and her

Ready to wow crowds LEAH Flanagan is gradually gaining national recognition as she continues to impress audiences across the country. On Friday, March 4, she will be bringing her distinctive take on folk/country style to Ocean Grove. A storyteller at heart and a multi-instrumentalist by nature, Leah moves between guitar, ukulele and piano, specialising in personal narratives that take flight with dry evocative imagery, vocal swoops and musical pyrotechnics.

painting was featured in the launch of the wholewoman website, and in promotional postcards, bookmarks and posters. Joy now volunteers at her son’s school, Surfside Primary, hoping to spread a love of art. Her creativity has flowed into producing a gift booklet, also for sale at the exhibition, titled With the Tide.

It features her words and some of her paintings, presented as a keepsake. The exhibition will be at the Karingallery, 4 James Street, Geelong, March 7-18. It will be officially opened on Friday, March 4, 6-8pm. It is set to be a celebration of life, in art. An extra chance to meet the artist will be given on Thursday, March 10 from 11am to 1pm.

FRIDAY 25th March 2011 IMPRESSIVE: Leah Flanagan is coming to Ocean Grove.

In 2007 she was personally invited by festival organiser, Peter Noble to perform at the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival after he saw her play at a jazz and blues bar in Darwin. “It’s not often you get the chance to see someone so talented, so early in their career, playing in a back-alley bar

in Darwin,” Noble said. “I was flabbergasted when I heard her and immediately offered her a gig at the Blues festival.” In 2009 Leah was inducted into the Black Arm Band, an international touring act of indigenous and non-indigenous artists. Leah will be at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop.

It’s show time PREPARATIONS are in full swing for the 21st Annual Bellarine Agricultural Show, to be held at the Portarlington Recreation Reserve on Sunday, March 13. The show provides an important forum for the rural community to gather together to showcase their wares,

share their skills and educate the wider community. A good example of this is the extensive array of produce, art and handicrafts on display throughout the pavilions, as well as the various demonstrations on offer, from sheep-shearing to lace-making.

Entries are invited for horses, cattle, pigeons and poultry, cookery, flowers, floral design, pot plants and produce, china painting, home brew, and vintage cars, among many others. There is even a Miss Showgirl and Master Showboy section. Most sections have categories

for juniors, including the popular schools section covering handcrafts, novelties and artistic pursuits. The vintage section has expanded this year to include a tractor trek and competitions. Make the most of the Labour Day long weekend and enjoy a day out for all the family.

A truly gifted singer I WAS walking along the Barwon River recently at Buckley’s Falls and heard the most amazing, rich, melodious sound coming from the reeds along the river. The next time I visited Blue Waters Lake I heard the same beautiful sound, and managed to spot the culprit – an Australian reed warbler. A similar warbler, known as the clamorous reed warbler is found in many parts of the world including, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China, Egypt and South East Asia. The Australian reed warbler is about 16 or 17cms in length. The bird is olive-brown on the back and paler white underneath. Both sexes are similar. They have a flat forehead; in fact they look like they have had their head stuck in a clamp, it is so elongated. They have a long, pointed, strong bill, and an orange-brown eyebrow. The Australian reed warbler feeds mainly on insects and is found in

We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest. Play it safe by the water With many warm summer days still ahead our beaches will continue to be very popular. We have Beach Safety Signs at every beach access pathway...........take the time to read the safety advice. Ocean Grove Main Beach Amenity Block The new amenity block on the foreshore that opened in early December was well utilised over the peak summer and many positive comments were received. With over 65,000 beach visits recorded by Surf Life Savers / Lifeguards over the 6 weeks of peak summer, the need for the new facility was well justified. One of the first users of the new facility were participants in the Disabled Surfers Association surf day, who were impressed by the new fully serviced “disabled” facilities that were constructed large enough for access via the large wheeled aquatic wheelchairs. Funding Our Operations Over 95% of our $4.2million revenue budget 10/11 is generated through the operation of our caravan parks and the surplus funds from the caravan park operations are used to provide over $1million for our coastal management activities and over $600,000 to fund capital works such as the recent demolition and rebuilding of the toilet and shower block at the Ocean Grove Main Beach. Within that revenue base approx $665,000 comes from the operation of our built accommodation component of the caravan parks. At Barwon Heads there are 19 accommodation units including the 4star Beach and Boat Houses that have very high occupancy rates (approx 85% year round) and contribute substantially to our operating funds. 13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast’s draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists has been on display for comments and submissions.

From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command.

Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC.

Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast.

Our Committee members will be reviewing all the submissions lodged (Over 100) prior to deciding on the next stage of this project.

Powered watercraft speed Barwon Coast is working in partnership with the Victorian Water Police and the Bellarine Police to raise awareness of the 5knot water speed limit in the Barwon River Estuary. This speed limit applies to all water craft including Jet Skis

Whilst the period of time for the lodging of submissions has now closed , details are available on our web site www.barwoncoast.com.au

business

Putting an end to pain LISA Broman runs Bellarine Exercise and Rehabilitation which provides exercise physiologist services to help people get healthy, stay healthy or recover after a bout of illness or injury. Having just returned from volunteering in Colombia, South America, doing rehabilitation, Lisa has recently relocated to Ocean Grove. “I love the lifestyle and community minded atmosphere of the people here. I meet people every day on the beach with my dog, which doesn’t seem to happen in other places,” says Lisa. She has worked in rehabilitation centres, hospitals and in community and corporate health for around seven years, including doing exercise physiology at Bendigo hospital with people from ages 7 to 95 with all conditions; recovering from surgery,

those with diabetes, heart disease, chronic pain, depression, injuries, arthritis, returning to work, the list could go on. Lisa says: “There is a lot of community support in starting a business here. This area has a large population of older adults and middle-aged baby boomers who are interested in staying fit and healthy and having a high quality of life to enjoy their lives by the ocean.” Lisa will be working out of the Ocean View Health Club providing one-to -one exercise physiology sessions, and working in Barwon Heads. “The challenge is raising awareness. The interest from people in what I do is fantastic, most people know the benefits of exercise for decreasing your risk of so many diseases, but find it hard to get started,” she said. “People say they aren’t sure what is safe for them to do after injury, illness,

or even pregnancy so they are very interested in exercise physiology. “It is also important for people to understand that there are rebates available with private health funds, Medicare, TAC, Veteran Affairs and WorkSafe if they access exercise

physiology services.” Working closely with the local exercise groups in the community to make sure people have ongoing, supportive groups to get together and stay fit after their rehabilitation is how Lisa would like to be part of the community.

“A healthy community is a happy one.” Outside of work Lisa enjoys running, camping, snowboarding and hiking. “I would like to say surfing, but I am not that great yet.” Visit www. bellarineexerciseand rehab.info

Race Thomas for fundraiser

Set for kids fun run OCEAN Grove kids are being invited to race Thomas the Tank Engine at a children’s fun run on March 13. The ‘Kids Fun Run with Thomas on the Bellarine Rail Trail’ will be held at the Drysdale Railway Station with all money raised donated to the Kids Plus Foundation. Kids Plus is a Barwon based childrens charity that provides intensive therapy to special needs babies who suffer neuro-physical disability like stroke, cerebral palsy or brain injury. Hugh McKewan’s family have worked with the Kids Plus Foundation since their three year old daughter Alex was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at six months old. The Ocean Grove real estate agent said Kids Plus has been a fantastic resource in helping Alex. “Kids Plus helped with their assistance insurmountably, especially with (Alex’s) mobility and to help her achieve day to day tasks,” Hugh said.

“The therapists there, they are top of the field.” Hugh said because of the important role the foundation plays in people’s lives like theirs, fundraising is key to keeping Kids Plus going for future families. “Basically were trying to raise money for sustaining the foundation so we secure it for families going forward,” he said. Both Lulu and Alex will take part in this year’s fun run and Hugh described Alex’s own unique way of racing in last year’s event. “She bum-shuffled it last year,” Hugh said with a smile. “Hopefully this year we’ll walk the whole way.” Kids from two to 12 years can participate in the race running E from 50 metres A toBL over a T kilometre. Five wickets in the u17s - and he’s only 10

PILATES STUDIO 5258 4633

BY anyone’s standards Lochlan Hapgood had a good day of cricket a fortnight ago. Taking five wickets for just 20 runs and four overs, he played a pretty tight game. But it’s not until you realise that the right handed medium bowler is a mere 10 years old that you really appreciate his abiity. Lochlan did the damage playing for Ocean Grove 17s at Wallington after being called up as a stand in. Not content with playing cricket, the all rounder also plays footy, basketball and surfs.

Suitable for all ages, level of fitness, pre and post natal.

Grubbers join Relay for Life The Grubbers are calling for locals to join them on a 24 hour relay to raise money for cancer. The Ocean Grove Football and Netball club are gathering members for their Grubbers team which will take part in the annual Relay For Life run by the Cancer Council. This is the first year the Ocean Grove team will take part in the relay that has teams keeping a baton moving around a track for 24 hours. Participants can run or walk the route held in Geelong at Deakin Waurn Ponds from midday Saturday March 19 until midday Sunday March 20. Grubbers team captain Sue Berry said they are hoping to sign up as many members as possible and aim to raise at least $5000. “We’re looking for people not only to sponsor money but also lollies and drinks to keep our team

going,” she said. Ocean Grove Football Netball Club president Geoff Cunningham said the fundraiser isn’t for the club but to get everyone together to raise money for the Cancer Council. “It’s a community based event under the umbrella of the footy club,” he said. “We’ve already got Surfside Primary teachers on board as well as the Ocean View Gym and players from the football and netball clubs.” Geoff said anyone is welcome to join the group either to participate in the event or donate to the other participants. “No matter your fitness, anyone can do it,” he said. “We’ve all known someone touched by cancer and it goes with our motto at the club, let’s stick together.” To donate or sign up to the Grubbers team, phone Sue Berry on 5255 1835 or 0408 551 835

Grove netballers get ready for the Relay.

The committee is fully committed to assisting potential coaches in these endeavours by providing an AFL approved level one coaching course and all equipment and personnel required as needed. The club is also looking for anyone that is interested in becoming a trainer and other volunteer positions such as timekeepers, canteen, bar and general maintenance for the coming season and again will assist in providing any courses that may be required. The Ocean Grove Football Club is a family friendly club committed to assisting the community and youth of Ocean Grove and if you are willing and able to assist us in any way you would be made most welcome. SOUL surfing wards off westerly

TOES ON THE NOSE: Ben Considine.

SOUL Longboard club survived wind gusts of 95 kmph on Saturday the 19th of Feb when they ran the Victorian Old Mal Titles at Ocean Grove. Tents, boards and people were sent flying by the violent westerly wind change at about 10.30. It was a great pity as there was a nice display of old boards and cars for all to see. A fantastic group effort in packing

Scott Wintle.

up the competition site saw only about 15 minutes lost from the event which relocated to the more protected area on the board-walk. Competitors in the morning had a strong North wind holding up a small incoming swell. Once the change came, competitors were nearly being blown backwards when catching the waves and made high scoring manoeuvers very difficult.

This year saw a repechage division as well as the traditional under and over 40s being contested. As usual in most surf comps the good surfers seemed to make it look easier than it was, and with the repechage it was good to see guys who only ride old mals part time get another chance. Jordie Brown took out the under 40s for the second time with Ben Considine giving him a good run

for his money after surfing a terrific final. Jordan Noble took third and Rob Emslie who is a well known performance longboarder did well to finish fourth. Scott Wintle is thinking of changing his name to Kelly after taking out the over 40s for the third year in a row. Brian Thompson grabbed second, and another Considine- Lee- third, with John Storm fourth.

New season of SOUL surfing The 2011 season for the SOUL Longboard Club kicks off on Sunday the 27th of February. This day also incorporates a “Girls Go Longboarding” day where any girls/women who want to come and have a try on a longboard are welcome to do so. Well known State coach Heather Peck will also be on hand to give advice to both the beginner and established surfer. This is a great opportunity to help improve your surfing ability no matter what level you’re at. This will be a fun surfing day, where old and new members can get together and find out about the new competition format for 2011 and socialise for the start of the new season. Note this is a Sunday event because of the DSA day on Saturday.
