ABOUT 45 years ago Don Campbell trained Ima Kiwi to win New Zealand’s Avondale Gold Cup. “It’s probably New Zealand’s fourth biggest horse race. He took two seconds off the track record,” Don said, from his property on Bluestone School Road where he still has horses in work with his son. “I had a jeweller friend at the time, Albee Johnson, who made the cup for the race and told me it was worth a lot of money and that I should take care of it,” recalled Don. “I sold it back to him and used the money to get him to fashion a platinum ring, inset with an emerald and surrounded by diamonds, which I gave to my wife Eleanor.” Eleanor, who has suffered from Parkinson’s disease for the past 18 years, lost the ring in Ocean Grove at the start of March. He’s appealing for people to help find it, or to people whom may have found it and are yet to hand it in to the police. Don, who in his days as a jockey won the 1960 Geelong Cup on Tabess, wants the ring back for obvious reasons. “It’s worth more than any trophy ever would have been. Eleanor treasures it, has had it for 40-plus years and it acts as a reminder of times before her illness.” Don and his family are offering a substantial reward for its return, 0407 524 965. TWO Ocean Grove girls are on their way to raising thousands of dollars for cancer research, writes Carly Helweg. Thirteen-year old Tahlea-Rose White and 12-year old Georgia Ronchi have set themselves the goal of raising $10,000 in a year to donate to the Australian Cancer Council. The girls are hosting a Family Fun Day at the Ocean Grove Hotel on Sunday, March 27 with silent auctions, live music and kids activities. Tahlea was inspired to hold the event after seeing the success of a similar Fun Day held in 2010 for local boy Cody Strahan. Cody suffers from Retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer and the event was held to raise funds for his care and

treatment. Tahlea said she was touched after receiving a phone call from Cody’s mum, Amy, thanking the girls for their fundraising efforts. “It was really special because she called me to say that she was so proud of what we are doing so it was really nice,” she said. Over 80 local businesses have donated goods for a silent auction, including vouchers, food and wine hampers,

sporting equipment and homewares. “We’ve got a massive silent auction with over $5000 worth of stuff donated by local businesses,” said Tahlea. The girls are hoping to raise over $3000 from the Fun Day and Tahlea said she is being optimistic about the number of people she hopes attend. The Family Fun Day is from 12-3pm with $5 entry for adults and kids are free.

TRADITIONAL Duck Race commentator Bernhard Napthine has hailed this year’s Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea a “great success, a great day and a great day for the family. “The weather helped make it a great day, we had extra food stralls, we had everything from Vietnamese and Iranian to paella. There were pony rides

and the kids zone was even bigger.” Based on the numbers going through the Lobster Pot the organisers estimate that between 5-6,000 visitors attended the day. There were six prizes in the Duck Race and the winner out of 1,100 was Roma Carruthers of Barwon Heads.

The fifth annual Earth Hour will take place on Saturday March 26 at 8:30pm and encourages people worldwide to turn out their lights for one hour. Organisers hope the action helps to promote an environmentally sustainable future and prompts world leaders to make changes beneficial to the planet. John said they are going to use Earth Hour during Sarah Carroll’s new album launch at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop on Saturday night to enhance, not hinder, her performance. “At the Chicken Shop, we will be turning the lights out and the candles on to observe Earth Hour and to create a special ambience,” he said.

Local bakers vie for title Local bakers from Bakers Delight Ocean Grove have been named among the best in the industry, taking out first and second prize for product quality in a recent Victorian baking competition. Bakers Delight Ocean Grove – The Parade and Ocean Grove - Marketplace, finished first and second respectively in Bakers Delight’s recent bake-off. A total of 33 Bakers Delight bakeries throughout Victoria competed in the regional competition. OCEAN Grove residents are getting mixed digital television reception in the lead up to Melbourne’s digital changeover at the end of 2013. On December 31, 2013 the old-fashioned analogue television signals will be switched off leaving only digital channels available. This means unless people have a digital television or a set top box converter, they will be unable to watch TV and the question is whether Ocean Grove is ‘digital ready’ for the switch-off. After surveying Ocean Grove residents from various areas of the town The Voice has identified problem areas that give reduced quality or nonexistent channels. Generally flatter areas of old Ocean Grove and houses close to the shopping areas have better signal quality and low lying areas like Collendina and Blue Waters Lake suffer reduced signal problems. Ocean Grove resident John Love has battled to watch television over the last three years. Living in a low lying

area of Collendina, John has battled to overcome the digital TV signal issues that have plagued his viewing since 2008. “At one stage there were no stations anywhere and in frustration we’d go to bed about seven thirty, eight o’clock,” he said. “I got very good at reading, we would go to the library instead.” Ocean Grove receives its digital television signal from a transmitter located on Mount Dandenong over 80km away. John said this means Ocean Grove and the Bellarine are already dealing with a weakened signal due to the distance from the tower. “I’ve had people approach me and

there are parts of Jan Juc, Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale that are experiencing the same problems,” he said. The Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA), My Switch website, allows residents to view the digital signal strength at their address. Areas of Ocean Grove range from ‘variable’ to ‘good’ coverage indicating the town is lacking in full digital reception. For any issues, the ACMA website directs residents to contact their local aerial specialist if they are having problems. After buying a new set top box and fixing his aerial in 2009, John said his problem was still not

fixed. “I had to change my set top box and paid $700 to get my aerial fixed so all up I think its cost me about a thousand bucks,” he said. “It only started to improve about six months ago.” John said he believes the whole of the Bellarine Peninsula needs a signal booster installed on the Bellarine Peninsula to overcome the issues. “Basically the problem is (ACMA) must put a repeater station in this area,” he said. quick news Air your view on the town LOCAL voices will help to improve Ocean Grove over the coming year. The OGCA (Ocean Grove Community Association) is asking for residents’ feedback and suggestions for the town in the lead up to their Annual General Meeting on April 6. Association chairman John Fendyk, said they will use the Ocean Grove Community Showcase Picnic on April 3 to approach visitors with a questionaire about their town in the hope of shaping OGCA’s planning for 2011-12. “One of the things we really want is to get feedback from the community,” Mr Fendyk said. “Part of our purpose is to represent them and for us to represent them we need to know what they want.” Mr Fendyk said the surveys will cover topics including local transport, infrastructure and resources. “From that information we will guide our strategic planning for the following year,” he said. OGCA will use their AGM to inform and discuss planning for the new Oakdene Estate and its proposed location on the eastern side of Grubb Road. Local traffic and infrastructure improvements will also be discussed, such as Tuckfield Street, as well as the Shell Road sporting precinct. A traffic study by Vicroads last year found the Tuckfield and Marlin Drive intersection warrants traffic lights and have suggested a budget of $750,000 for the project. Mr Fendyk said he was ‘optimistic’ funding for that would become available this year. OGCA will work with COGG (City of Greater Geelong) in the future on several projects throughout 2011 including reviewing the City’s Structure Plan for Ocean Grove. The AGM will be held on April 6 at 7.30pm in the Grove Centre, corner of Presidents Avenue and The Parade.

Bite the Big Apple THE vagaries of Victoria’s weather failed to upset the apple cart for Ocean Grove Primary School fair. Despite burning sunshine followed by wind, showers and then heavy rain, big crowds enjoyed a full day of live music, fairground rides, food stalls and white goods sales – raising more than $20,000 for the school. “It went really well,” said organising committee member Inga Tribe. “We made over $20,000 profit, which is pretty

good considering the weather and there was a lot on that weekend. “As well as lots of holidaymakers, the local community came out in force. “We had a great musical line up and Chris (Wilson) and Sarah (Carroll) were a great drawcard. “The music was fantastic.” Inga thanked the school community, the volunteers, parents and all the sponsors for making the day such a success for everyone involved.

Street music stirs shopper Terrace turn off Dear Editor Ever since music has been played over loudspeakers in the street I have simply avoided shopping and entertaining in the Terrace completely. I am originally from Sydney and normally have between 12-18 visitors come to stay with me over the holiday period. Now instead of spending our money in Ocean Grove, I take them to Queenscliff or Barwon Heads instead. As I live fairly close to the Market Square shops I don’t really have to visit the Terrace to shop at all. I have lived here 11 years now and think it is a shame that we are cheapening Ocean Grove with muzak. No other township on either the

Bellarine Peninsula or the Surf Coast shire feels the need to play music in the streets despite the fact that they all rely on the tourist dollar. What a total waste of resources. If the original purpose of the music was to create a festive atmosphere over Christmas surely there would be better ways of spending that money, such as employing buskers, street performers, face painters etc on selected days throughout the holiday period. DURING the summer holiday period when The Terrace buzzes with people and traffic, some may wonder where the music playing in the street comes from. Locals may be surprised to find out the person behind the music we’ve listened to whilst shopping or sitting outside local cafes is none other than Paul Drake. Manager of Home Hardware and President of the Ocean Grove Business Association, Paul has helped to organise the yearly Christmas carols and the pop music that plays throughout The Terrace. Paul said the music plays a big part in people’s moods and has tried to play songs that appeal to everyone. “There’s been a lot of 80s music and I think that’s where it works, it appeals to most people,” Paul said. This year Paul has gone

one step further matching music to Valentine’s and Australia Day with iconic love songs and Australian artists pumping out the speakers, however he is quick to dismiss the suggestion he is a resident muso. “I’m no John Bowman,” he said. Paul is calling on local’s opinions and suggestions for the music, whether it should be played a longer period of time and if this year’s songs have been well liked. “I think during summer the street is a hub of activity and the music adds to that whereas when it quiets down that’s when you tune into it,” he said. “It would be great to hear what people think.” Tell us what you think. M o nday Ap r il 1 1 th Last Sunday I had a great day at the Ocean Grove Primary School Apple Fair. Loved the entertainment - the Rustys especially, delicious coffee, yummy ice cream and chips. My kids really enjoyed the Baby Animal Farm and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. All good. All good? Not quiet. I was speechless when I saw the stall where they sold plastic guns and could not believe my eyes when I saw the taser gun set up. Little kids with machine guns shooting at each other at an apple fair.

Just a bit of harmless fun? You can judge for yourself. How numb are we that a primary school at their biggest community day of the year is getting away with promoting war. Poetry group turns 20 AFTER two decades of readings, research and writing, a group of Ocean Grove poetry enthusiasts are looking forward to a day of reminiscence and readings. In 1991 Dorothy Cook, 90, and Lorraine Giles, united by a love of poetry, put up fliers in the old Ocean Grove shop front library as part of a push by the University of the Third Age (U3A) to spread its services from Geelong, out into the suburbs. “That library is now Elvis Parsley, I think,” says Dorothy, recalling the nascent days of the group. ‘We also put an ad in The Echo. The Independent wasn’t around then.’ On April 8, Ocean Grove’s U3A Poetry Appreciation Group will celebrate 20 years of poetic exploration. The initial group of six began sessions at the first Neighbourhood House in

Ocean Grove in February 1991. That building is now a car park and of the original six members, two have moved from Ocean Grove and two have died, leaving Lorraine and Dorothy as the only original members. Both will speak at the 20th anniversary celebration. “We had no learned poetry teachers in the region and needed six people to cover the rent at the centre,” said Dorothy. “So each member chose poets and themes to study and took it in turns to lead the group. Each person presented a poet by researching their life and bringing a book of that poet’s poetry.” Ena Roach, 74, who joined the group five weeks after it began and is now its leader, said everyone was passionate about getting together. “Whilst there are plenty of

differences of opinion amongst members, all are enthusiastic about discussing poetry together. We laugh a lot. There is a real feeling of warmth.” Current membership stands at 18. The group meets every Friday afternoon in the Uniting Church Foyer and over the years has studied poetry from places as diverse as China, Russia and Persia through to English, Irish and Australian (including Aboriginal) poetry. Even pope John Paul II had poetry he wrote in his early twenties presented to the group when one of its members discovered a book of his poetry at a book fair. “He wrote about love, wars and death,” Ena said. While this is an offhand remark it does get to the enduring appeal of poetry for the two women.

“My love of poetry comes from how it expresses the music latent in language and a depth of meaning that can only be achieved in the poetic form,” Dorothy said. “There’s also a deep sense of connectedness when reading different poets, like a musical theme that echoes through different poems.” Taking up that idea, Ena said: “I love poetry because it tells great truths about the important things in life – death, love, hope, fear, beauty – in few words. Even reading Chinese poetry from 700 hundred years ago, they still wrote about the same fundamental themes that people write about today.” The group meets every Friday afternoon in the Uniting Church foyer, except during school holidays. MP’s petition calls for sport precinct priority FEDERAL MP Darren Cheeseman is trying to kick-start the Shell Road Sports Precinct project by launching a petition calling on the new Victorian government to make it a funding priority. Mr Cheeseman has been backed by local sports clubs and said significant money had been committed. “This project as it has been planned has a total cost of over $6 million and is now seriously at risk. The Gillard government has promised a contribution of $2 million. “Our contribution is unconditional and we will provide that amount. “The City of Greater Geelong is committed to the project and has already done a significant amount of strategic planning for the development.” Mr Cheeseman said the development was vital for the region and would be well used by a range of sports. “This is the most

priority and would save money in the long run. “The best way to fight childhood obesity is to get kids active and involved in community sport. It’s the old adage of prevention is better than cure, and that’s socially and financially in my book,” he said. “The Shell Road precinct upgrade will help the Ocean Grove football, netball, soccer and cricket clubs and other sports to increase their levels of participation. “All these clubs do a tremendous job in getting kids involved and keeping them healthy, and I am urging the new Victorian government to match the commitment that the Gillard government has shown. “I call on Ocean Grove and surrounding communities to support

these vital sporting clubs in signing the petition calling on the Victorian state government to fund this vital community infrastructure project.” The redevelopment would be used by the Ocean Grove Football/

Netball Club, Surfside Soccer Club, and Ocean Grove Cricket Club as well as numerous other important community and sporting organisations. The upgraded facility would include a pavilion and incorporate change rooms, community meeting space and social facilities as well as proper training and playing facilities.

Nothing beats the sea I WAS born at Baxter House in Geelong as were most people from the area in 1957 and then joined the long list of Menzies’s that have been living in Ocean Grove since “late November 1882”. I share my life here with my wife Marita and son Riley. I went to Ocean Grove primary as did my dad and now my son. Then I went to East Tech, did a four- year apprenticeship as a wood machinist /joiner and then nine years in the Army finishing as a Sergeant Gunnery Instructor. I then got married and 10 years hard labour in our restaurant, Marita’s Mexican Wave in the main street. For the past five years I have been working as a Jim’s mower. Because I drive all over the town with my work I get to see the day to day changes as

What keeps me in the Grove is interesting; thinking back to growing up here there is a flood of memories, some of which I will try to share with you. Our first phone number was 40, dirt roads, the ice truck, night watchman (can man), picking blackberries in the swamp (now memorial oval), the day the population sign changed to 1250 (almost a city over night). We shot rabbits in the sticks of Collendina and then traded a pair of rabbits for a glass of homemade lemonade at the Arlington Homestead on the way home. I often hear people complain about progress, the town isn’t what it used to be, it’s getting too big. Public transport, walking tracks, cycle paths, more schools, swimming pools (not big enough), sporting facilities, different shops and foods … maybe progress is not all bad. I had a fantastic time growing up in Ocean Grove during the

60s and 70s. Name a decent Australian band that didn’t play at the “Dina” in the 70s and 80s. I wish I could give my son Riley the Ocean Grove of 30 years ago; sadly I can’t. I have been involved in the footy club since its inception; my dad was the first ever coach of an Ocean Grove football team (U18). I was at the cricket club before I could walk. What’s next for the Grove? Hopefully not too much will change around the main street. Places like Murf ’s Surf Shop

are the soul of Ocean Grove. You can drop in, get all the gossip, pick up a bargain and move on, a real one-stop shop. The only change I can think of around the main street would be to make The Parade a one way street to mirror The Terrace, complete the circuit. It’s easy to say that as I have never really lived anywhere else I don’t know what I am missing. But the numbers of new people moving into the Grove reinforces my belief that this is an exceptional place

to live. Not ever forgetting walking in the shallows along the beach or river after dinner on a hot night, how can it get better than that? Marita, Riley and I make an effort to travel overseas once a year if possible to see what’s out there. At the end of the day no matter where we have been or what we have seen it’s only when we get home that we realise just how good Australia, Victoria and Ocean Grove really are. And nothing beats your own bed.

Balancing the books AS BORDERS and Angus and Robertson stores close around the nation, Ocean Grove remains home to two successful bookshops of its own. For a local perspective on the perceived crisis in book sales, the Voice turned to Stacey Moore of bookgrove and Lisa Sutherland, who runs the secondhand bookstore Books on Parade. Stacey is dismissive of talk that Borders and Angus and Robertson stores have gone into receivership because of the competition from online sales. ‘They had a huge online sales presence,’ she said. She believes there are pros and cons to the news that (as of March 3) 38 stores were closing their doors, with the obvious concern being the redundancies of 321 permanent and casual staff, including 12 from the Geelong Angus and Robertson store. For the moment, the Geelong Borders is still trading. Both businesses are owned by 260 RED Group Retail and had 25 per cent of the market share. “A possible pro,” Stacey said, “is that independent booksellers will be able to pick up some of those customers.” However, Stacey worries for those shopping in the big shopping centres that will lose

bookshops altogether. “Kids won’t go down to their high street to look for books. It’s how some people shop now. They don’t go anywhere else other than places like Chadstone, and independents can’t set up shops there.” Another issue raised was that Borders and Angus and Robertson offered cheaper books. “While their three-fortwo deals caught the eye, once you got into the shop most of the books were 20 per cent higher than recommended retail,” Stacey said. This lends credence to the argument by many independent retailers, who stick to the recommended retail price, that it was bad management that cost those book chains their stores. Lisa, who has recently opened the secondhand bookshop, Books on Parade, suggested that the prohibitive cost of most books was the reason people stopped shopping at the big chains. “A successful bookshop needs to create a nice environment,” Lisa said, getting to another point that illustrated why the chains were struggling. They just aren’t nice places to go and look for books.” Stacey agreed. “They had a Big W approach to bookselling,”

For a secondhand seller like Lisa, the cost of postage from online sales will keep people interested in coming to her shop. “Real book buyers are

promiscuous,” Stacey said. “And they like to come into physical stores to browse for books. The amount of customers I get from all over the peninsula reflects that.” While obituaries are being written for the book store in its current form, the impression given by Stacey and Lisa is that news of their demise may have been greatly exaggerated.

Variety abounds COLLECTORS got the chance to rummage through an even wider than usual variety of stalls for the annual Ocean Grove stamp fair. Dealers travelled from as far as Warrnambool , Colac and Melbourne for the fair at the Senior Citizens Hall. “It was a successful day,” said organiser Dianne Sapwell. “We had a hall full of people selling, although it was a little disappointing with the numbers of visitors. “There was a lot more variety for people to browse.” Ocean Grove Stamp Club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 10am at the hall.

One good tern deserves another winter. Having said that they remain generally in their local habitat, Caspian Terns have been known to fly 60 kms at a time in search of food. The Caspian Tern that flies around the Barwon River is very impressive to watch. It flies over the water searching for fish to eat, and then dives headlong from a height of about 15 metres

Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest. 13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast’s draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists has been on display for comments and submissions. Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC. Whilst the period of time for the lodging of submissions has now closed, details are still available on our web site www.barwoncoast.com.au Our Committee members will be reviewing all 119 submissions prior to deciding on the next stage of this project. Ocean Grove Main Beach – DSA competition On 26th February the Disabled Surfers Association held their first event for 2011 under perfect skies (one of the few this summer), with a glorious low tide, wide expanse of beach and gentle shore break. Organisers advised that over 60 people participated on the day with over 180 volunteers assisting – what a great day for everyone. Access to the beach on the Aquatic wheelchairs was

Participants were also able to access the purpose built “disabled” toilets within the new $1m main beach amenity block. The units being purposely designed to be wide enough to accommodate the wide wheeled aquatic wheelchairs. Dog Free Beaches The dog free beaches declaration changed as from 1st February with dogs allowed back on the Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), but they must be on a leash until the end of April. This also applies to the Barwon River beaches. From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. There are some sections of beach where dogs are prohibited all year around including west of 40W on 13th Beach which is a known Hooded Plover nesting area. There are from time to time other areas temporarily fenced off when a Hooded Plover nest / scrape is found and we ask that dogs be put on a leash in such areas. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Funding Our Operations Over 95% of our $4.2million revenue budget 10/11 is generated through the operation of our caravan parks and the surplus funds from the caravan park operations are used to provide over $1million for our coastal management activities and over $600,000 to fund capital works such as the recent demolition and rebuilding of the toilet and shower block at the Ocean Grove Main Beach. Within that revenue base approx $665,000 comes from the operation of our built accommodation component of the caravan parks. At Barwon Heads there are 19 accommodation units including the 4star Beach and Boat Houses that have very high occupancy rates (approx 85% year round) and contribute substantially to our operating funds. Golfers help raise cash for polio OCEAN Grove golfers were out in force for the Graham Bath Challenge at Lonsdale Golf Club last week. The event is a golf challenge between Rotary and Probus clubs in the district. There were 59 players representing four Rotary clubs and four Probus clubs. The event was a charity day to raise funds for the Rotary International program Polio Plus which is eradicating polio throughout the

world. $900 was raised on Thursday. The winning team was from Point Lonsdale/ Queenscliff Probus club with 118 points. The winning team members were Syd Harris, Andrew Behan and John Scanlon. The runner up was Ocean Grove Rotary with 111 points. The winners of the individual trophy were Andrew Behan from Point Lonsdale/ Queenscliff Probus and Marj Golding from Ocean Grove Rotary.

Picnic in the park

The King and I Ocean Grove families feature prominently in the latest Queenscliffe Lighthouse Theatre Company’s Broadway Production, The King and I. Ocean Grove’s Jon Mamonski (Carols in the Park) is the Director and his daughter Rachael in one of the dancers in the ballet “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. The talented Mantelli family all make an appearance with Etienne playing Louis Leonowens, whilst brother Edmund and Sister Livia are royal children , dad Ulbaldino will perform the role of The Kralahome (Prime Minister) and mum Bridgett will play in the some 20 strong orchestra. The story is set in Bangkok in the early 1860’s and tells

the story of Anna Leonowens (Melinda Thorne) an adventurous Englishwoman hired to serve as governess and tutor to King Mongkut’s (Dan Eastwood) many children. Although Anna quarrels with the King, the two eventually develop a strong love and respect for each other and Anna’s influence on the King helps modernise the country. Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s wonderful music and songs include I Whistle A Happy Tune, Getting To Know You and the beautiful, Something Wonderful (sung by Nicole Hickman as Lady Thiang). The King and I features a very strong and talented production team including Marion Melrose

as Assistant Director, Stewart Firth as Producer, Michael Wilding as Musical Director and Justine Bratanavisius as choreographer. Ocean Grove Library news Chatterbooks, which had its inaugural meeting on Wednesday February 23, is a junior book club for kids aged 7 to 12. It will run on the last Wednesday of the month between 4-5pm (excluding school holidays). The first

meeting attracted a small number of dedicated young readers but as Paul Kelly, a doyen of literature and song, sings: ‘from little things big things grow’. Those big things have a meeting of their own on the

third Tuesday of the month between 2.30-3.30pm. A dedicated group discuss what they’ve been reading and what they like and don’t like about the books they’ve been perusing. Unlike the traditional book club format,

The ideal vantage point Geelong District Bowls Association for spectating was in the newly to host it’s biggest matches of the renovated Member’s Lounge which season – the Geelong/Ballarat provides the perfect setting for Premier Division and the GDBA viewing bowls. AT ONE point in its 26year history, the Bellarine Baseball side had six players in the under 18 state side. Today, the Bears are struggling to field a junior team. Club president David Crotty cites Ocean Grove’s full sporting calendar as one reason for the drop. The club won its first A Grade flag in 1995, not surprisingly a year or two after the juniors represented the state. It has won a number of C and D Grade premierships. This year it is in A-grade and will compete against eight teams across the region including sides from Werribee, Colac, Ballarat and Lara. While the sport is generally perceived as a summer pastime, the

The Collendina under 15s capped off a successful season by winning the D’Arcy premiership on Sunday, 13 March. After bowling out Grove for 90, Cobras faced one over on the Saturday and went to stumps 0/7. The loss of two quick wickets on the Sunday morning brought Curtly Balshaw and Byron Taylor together at the crease. They batted with aplomb, guiding the Cobras from 2/27 to victory at 2/91. Curtly made 44 not out, and Byron made 29 not out. ‘I couldn’t have been happier with how we bowled and fielded,’ said the team’s clearly pleased coach, Paul Liistro.

‘Byron and Curtly did the job to a tee on the Sunday. They cruised home,’ he said, describing both players as exceptional talents with big futures in front of them. Byron put in a good all round performance taking 3/14 off 10 overs, while Dan McManus and Luke Bastiaan both performed well with the ball, taking 3/6 off five overs and 2/11 off nine overs respectively. Byron’s performance with the bat was even more impressive given that he played most of the year in the under 13s, where he averaged

85.5. His innings in the final took his overall average for the season to 100. Over 10 innings he was not out eight times. Curtly averaged 131 for the year, retiring on 50 seven of the nine times he batted. Both batsmen have represented the Geelong Rockets, with Byron having also represented Victoria. The young Grubbers also have plenty to be proud about, having finished third overall in the table, the side went about the match with maturity and good team spirit right to the end. Stand outs for the red caps were Myles Henderson (41) and Brad Fendyk with (10 and 2/12).

Pre-season promise OCEAN Grove seniors had an impressive start to their preseason campaign with a 10 goal-plus win over the Hampton Rovers. On a sunny day with a strong easterly blowing across the ground, the Rovers (Grubbers’ coach Cameron McGregor’s old club, who will play B-Grade Amateurs this year) started the game better, winning more of the ball but without really hurting the score board.

As the term wore on, the Grubbers won more of the footy and the teams went to the break with a couple of goals a piece. Both could have had more, if not for inaccuracy in front of the sticks. Noting that the Rovers had already benefited from a practice game, McGregor expected the Grubbers to start playing better footy in the second term. And so they did. With the cobwebs of a preseason begun in November blown out and disappearing on the easterly, the Grubbers piled on four unanswered goals, and seven for the quarter, to go to the main break five goals up. The third term saw an even more dominant performance. The grubbers kicked eight goals to one. When they weren’t winning the ball out of

the centre of the ground they were moving it swiftly through the corridor to deep in the forward line where a number of hard working crumbers, including new recruit Kade Wellington, were capitalising with multiple goals. The last quarter was more even, but the Grubbers played out the game strongly. Coach Cameron McGregor was pleased with the performance. ‘The team played well.

I was happy with the way our structures held up and our ball movement through the middle of the ground was good,’ he said, refusing to single out any individual for special praise this early in the season. He did acknowledge that it was good to see Tom Foott’s (a ruckman recruited from University Blues) first game for the club, as it was an area of the ground in which the team had been sorely lacking last year.

‘We’ve picked up a couple of experienced tall blokes this year,’ said McGregor, who was looking forward to having them out on the park in the season proper. ‘It was good for the boys to have a run after a pretty long preseason and barring a couple of little injury worries the game went just about how we wanted,’ he concluded. He also indentified the way the team capitalised on periods of dominating possession by hitting the scoreboard as a positive and an aim for the year. Judging by the happy faces on the strong crowd at the Collendina Caravan Park ground, finals should be a realistic prospect for the club this year after narrowly missing out last year. In the early game, the seconds also had a good win. The under 18s played an intra club game in the morning.

Grubbers B’s and C’s roll the Hawks The Ocean Grove Cricket Club’s B-Grade side won their second flag in two years on Sunday. Led by Adam Spiby (52 not out) with the bat, and bowlers Dale Savage and Luke Hardiman, they defeated Drysdale by 70 runs at Drysdale. definitely on us. To Drysdale’s credit it was probably our toughest game for the year,’ he said, on Sunday evening over the noise of raucous celebrations in the club rooms. Contributing to the noise was the C-Grade side, who also won their Grand Final (see over page). ‘The margin doesn’t suggest it but the game was still in the balance

with five overs to go.’ Part of Baulch’s relief came from contributing 43 runs to the Grubbers score of 9/242. ‘I made one run in the last two grand finals. People were starting to call me Leon Davis,’ Baulch said, referring to the Collingwood footballers underperformance in AFL finals. His opening partner, D. Luke Hardiman also came in for praise. He bowled a marathon 26 overs without a break, recording figures of 3/59. Baulch said the club owed a lot to new coach Lucas Cameron. ‘He came on board this year

and embraced the club with heart and soul. He encouraged us to play the Ocean Grove way and the results followed.’ ‘Obviously the aim is to win an A-Grade flag. We made the semis this year – a good improvement – but lost to the eventual premiers [Barwon Heads].’ Baulch also noted with some satisfaction that ‘strong rivals’ Drysdale played in four grand finals for zero wins.

OCEAN Grove Cricket Club’s C-Grade side made amends for two years of lost grand finals by defeating Drysdale on Sunday, writes Hamish Brooks. The side recorded a victory of similar margin to their B-Grade fellows, in a game played on the Grubbers home turf. Batting first on Saturday, the Grubbers made a slightly below par 129, but scoring was difficult on the very slow ground. Henderson top scored

with 28. Batting at number ten, Montgomery made sure the tail wagged making a valuable 26 before being run out. Drysdale looked to be making a good fist of the chase when they were 2/53, but they lost 8/14 in a horror patch to lose the match. For the Grubbers, John Murphy’s figures of 4/19 off 13 earned him man of the match honours. Dan Roddis also contributed well with the ball taking 3/9 off 10 overs.
