Crossings “unsafe” THE City of Greater Geelong says it will ‘review’ the crossings on The Parade after locals raised serious concerns about their safety. The crossings were initially installed after calls from locals, particularly the elderly, infirm and mothers with pushchairs, for a safe route between the town’s main car park and the doctors surgery. Since then Ocean Plaza has opened up and pedestrian and motor traffic have both increased.
Many locals say the existing crossings are poorly marked and drivers are not seeing people crossing until very late. Last week Ron Johnson wrote to the Voice expressing his concerns. His letter has prompted similar responses and phone calls to our newsdesk. “We appreciate having the crossing,” Mr Johnson said this week. “But they have to be visible to the drivers. Not everyone can make eye contact with the
drivers.” In the space of the 15 minutes that the Voice spoke to other concerned residents we witnessed three near misses on one of the crossings. Many of those believe the crossings need lights to make it more obvious to drivers. Kevin Callinan said: “At least if they should paint it (the stripes on the road) yellow so that drivers can see it.” City of Greater Geelong Manager Engineering Services

David Hannah said the City had recently carried out works at the pedestrian crossing in The Parade, Ocean Grove. “We have trimmed the trees, improved the signage and upgraded the line marking. We are also going to review the existing arrangement,” he said. “We urge drivers to take care when approaching the pedestrian crossing in this busy part of Ocean Grove.”

OCEAN Grove’s Community Market is on Sunday March 7. As well as the usual array of food and craft stalls this month, the now regular gold coin donation will be helping raise money for the John Logan Foundation. John Logan died at the young age of 46 in July 2008. He died from multiple cancers of the digestive system. His wish was that before he died, he could raise money for chemotherapeutic drugs that are not available through the PBS scheme and are both very expensive but also very effective in the treatment of such cancers.

THE first sections of what will be the real footbridge next to the new Barwon Heads Bridge have been lowered into place. Up until now all the visible work has been construction of the working bridge they will build the new bridge off of. In all, 36 sections weighing in excess of nine tonnes will be lowered on to 18 pillars that are buried some 12 meters into rock. The footbridge will initially be sealed, probably with a concrete deck, while it is used to carry traffic during the actual road bridge construction. Ultimately the footbridge will have a timber surface. A spokesman for bridge builders McDonnell Dowell Construction said the project was now well on schedule to complete that first stage by April or May. About 45 mainly local contractors are working on the site at this stage. Bridge managers are planning to offer another community day in April or May to give locals the chance to ask about progress.

Last week for popular chippy
quick news Busy at CFA
Shutting up shop after 23 years: Anne and Tania.
NEWS that Ocean Grove Fish and Chip Shop is to close after 23 years in the town has been greeted with genuine sadness among many of its loyal customers. The family business in the middle of the Terrace will close its doors when it runs out of stock sometime this weekend. That is likely to be sooner rather than later with many locals saying they will organise family chip shop nights so they can get one last takeaway from the popular family run chippy. The chip shop has been in the Lagadinos family for nearly a quarter of a century, with Tony and Christine and their daughters Anne, Tania and Anthea all working there at some time. The family was originally settled
in Port Pirie, South Australia. After a short spell in Greece where Tony was from, the family decided to return home to Australia, to Geelong where they opened the second chicken shop in the city along with relatives. That was the Corio Chicken Bar. They went on to own various other takeaway food stores in Geelong. In September 1987 they decided to sell up and go on a relaxing trip. However, during this time a real estate agent knowing Tony was still in the market to run a business, approached him with details of a ‘very busy fish and chip shop on the Bellarine Peninsula’. “We were not impressed,” recalled Tania, “but he assured us we were only going to have a look. Two months later we were behind the
counter serving.” They ran the business for many years even after the building was sold for redevelopment. Six years later they were still trading. But the recent tragic loss of Tony their adored father and the “backbone of the business” and the end of their lease has left the family with no choice but to cease trading. “During the time we were in the shop we made many friends locally, in other areas, interstate and other countries. “We would like to thank all the people who worked for us, both past and present and those who have supported us over the last 23 years. We hope we meet again elsewhere.” Tania said it was unlikely they would go into a food business again.
OCEAN Grove CFA has attended four incidents in five days last week, two in the town and two in other Bellarine areas. The first callout was to support crews at a serious house fire in Portarlington on Thursday February 11. The following day crews responded to an odour or gas leak in Fraser Crescent. On February 13 they were called to a more serious shed fire where the brigade deployed its thermal imaging camera and Quick Cut saw as well as breathing apparatus to bring it under control. The shed was gutted.

TV spot for Grove angler AN Ocean Grove angler is hosting a new sport fishing TV series that has begun airing on Foxtel’s Aurora channel. Bill Hartshorne who is also the tournament director for the Vic Bream Classics, will host the program which pushes the idea of adrenalin pumping sport fishing in contrast with more leisurely recreational fishing. In the show Bill heads out with some of the country’s most skilful anglers to bring what the program makers say is the “most exciting light line sport fishing action”. Fishing Life will also feature full coverage of the 2009 Hummingbird
Bream Classic Series; a catch and release bream tournament circuit where teams of two anglers battle against some of the country’s most accomplished for the chance to be crowned the Hummingbird Bream Classic Champions. The 13 show series airs at 8.30pm on Monday nights. The series went to air on February 15. Bill who travels all over Australia to as part of the sport said that the Barwon Estuary has plentiful fish bream but it one of the harder places to get a bite. “They’re probably too well fed,” he said. Probus Club of Ocean Grove founder members Reg Tonkin, Des Keen, Alf McKay, Alan Lewis, Ed Vandergraff and current president Ian Whitelock.
Grove club celebrates 25th THE Probus Club of Ocean Grove celebrated its 25th anniversary last week. Exactly 25 years ago to the day a group of 63 men – and it has remained a male only club – met at the Ocean Grove Hotel. Apart from the occasional event away, that is where they have met ever since. The club’s foundation president was Graham Bath and as with all Probus clubs it is closely linked to its local Rotary Club.
That link continued at the anniversary lunch at Ocean Grove Golf Club when current Ocean Grove Rotary president Rod Greer spoke and launched a book on the club’s history. The book was compiled by current president Ian Whitelock, Bill Grace and Fred Andrews, and a previous history sub-committee under life member Cliff Prowse. Mr Greer praised the club and in particular
those members who have put up their hands to be active during the course of the club’s first quarter of a century. The Probus Club of Ocean Grove has 73 members and is one of six in the town. Others clubs in the town have male and female members. One of the main features of this club is that members have always enjoyed a guest speaker at its meetings.

Mako sharks (above) and Bronze Whalers (right) are both common in our waters, but attacks are rare.
Shark danger? WITH another shark recently spotted off Thirteenth Beach, less than two months after a local was injured in an encounter while surfing, the ocean may seem a less inviting place to be. No one was injured in the most recent incident on February 9 but Surf Lifesavers put out a warning across the beaches. The shark was identified as a bronze whaler, one of the few potentially dangerous sharks to graze our local waters. It followed an incident where Geelong surgeon Patrick Lockie received cuts to
the hand while surfing Boings a fortnight earlier. Bronze whaler sharks are said to feed on school fish and have local breeding grounds including Mud Islands in the Bay of Port Phillip. However, the Voice has recently been in touch with John West of Taronga Zoo which has arguably the most definitive record of shark attacks in Australia. According to their records there have only been four recorded incidents, let alone attacks, between Point Lonsdale and Torquay in the last 125 years.
In fact the last two fatal attacks in the whole of Victoria were 33 and 54 years ago and they weren’t on this side of the bay. This begs the question of whether all shark swimmer/ surfer/diver ‘interactions’ are recorded. Species in Victorian waters include Makos, Thresher, Blue, Bronze Whalers, Gummy, Great Whites or White Pointers and the occasional Hammerhead. If you know of incidents not recorded in the following, contact news@ oceangrovevoice.com

Residents say crossings are not safe Dear Editor I thoroughly agree that the pedestrian crossings in The Parade are not marked distinctly enough (Voice Feb 10-23). I have said that from Day 1, that the white lines of the crossings just totally blend in with all the other white lines indicating the humps etc. They need to be “more solid white”. From a distance, as you approach in your car, they look grey. I had recently started to cross at the crossing outside the Medical Clinic and thankfully I had my eagle eye fixed on an approaching motorist. While I was standing smack dang in the middle of the road on the pedestrian crossing, the woman driver drove right through the crossing within about 1 metre of me. It is all very well for the council officials saying that they consider the lines adequate. I suggest that they come to Ocean Grove and repeatedly throughout the day, try using the crossing and see what happens to them. I also suggest that they try driving down the street – in all the various forms of light conditions – and see for themselves how the lines simply seem to fade into oblivion. Marg B Ocean Grove.
Residents want the Parade crossings made safer. See story page 3.
Dear Editor Having seen and experienced quite a few near misses on The Parade pedestrian crossings, I hope the Ocean Grove Voice will pursue the matter and get the COGG to realise that a crossing between two car park exits (main car park and underground Target car park) is asking for a tragedy. The drivers are watching the traffic to their right and not the pedestrians to their left. Last year one lady had her foot run over on the crossing outside Coles. A Henderson

Leading Tyre manufacturer Kumho has thrown support behind the McGrath Foundation, in addition to a $100,000 donation, with a novel fundraising initiative involving the company’s network of tyre dealers - on Pink Fitters Day. Kumho tyre dealer staff and fitters around the country - including Surfside Tyres - donned special pink shirts for the day as a sign of their support for the McGrath Foundation and the vital work it is doing in caring for women with breast cancer and their families.

I HAVE been living in Ocean Grove for 14 years but have had an association with the area for close to 20 years. Until now I have never really given much thought as to why I enjoy living here so much. I do know that when I go away I am always glad to return and miss not just Ocean Grove but the Bellarine Peninsula. There are so many opportunities to experience so many things, work, rest or play it’s all covered. My first association with Ocean Grove happened through my wife, Colleen. She had the privilege of growing up on the Peninsula and we used to make regular visits to her family, from our St Kilda home. Over time we found our visits were more regular and going back to Melbourne became harder. When the chance to renovate and live in an old cottage on my in-laws property came up we jumped at it and made the move. Though it did take another three years before the renovations were finished and we were able to make that final move. We lived in that house in Marcus Hill for five years before moving to our current, more central house 10 years ago. My kids were a little reticent about “moving into
town” but soon loved everything on offer and now I don’t think they will ever leave Ocean Grove. I have seen a lot of changes since I first started coming to “The Grove” with the expansion of the main street shopping precinct, new housing estates and shopping centres, the movement of the high school campus from Queenscliff to Drysdale, large population growth and very importantly the battle to maintain a small piece of vacant land in the centre of town for community use. Whether all these changes are for the best only time will tell, I do think we as a community need to be aware of the nature of any future developments and think about exactly what sort of town we want Ocean Grove to be, keeping in mind the balance of development, lifestyle and amenity. Off the soapbox now. One big change I have noticed is the growth of the local music scene. When I first came to town I was one of a select band of working musicians in the area; this has changed and now there is a large vibrant, supportive and creative music scene in Ocean Grove. Queenscliff may have the world-renowned music festival but Ocean Grove is where music happens every week. Week in
week out, several venues cater to different musical tastes and abilities. Bar Deli, Zebra Bar, Nectar and of course the Chicken Shop all host local, national and international acts. The effort that people like John and Margie Bowman at The Chicken Shop put into not just music but the arts in general can only mean that people of all ages will be exposed to and encouraged to participate in creative pursuits, make community connections and just have some good old fashioned fun. The “chook shop” is an unlikely venue but it works on so many levels. Ocean Grove has also developed its own festivals. Tranquillity, which funds the work at Ingamells park, The Ocean Grove Summer Festival and the Open Mic Festival, which give young and old an opportunity to put on a show, all great events and all adding to the growing creative outlets available in Ocean Grove. Why do I find Ocean Grove such a great place to live? Coming here from Melbourne I do sometimes miss places like Victoria Street for a good cheap Vietnamese meal but the beauty of Ocean Grove is that if the urge takes me I can jump in the car
and be feasting in just over an hour. The occasional culinary urge is nowhere near enough to drag me away from a place that has one of the most accessible, family friendly surf beaches in the world, great wineries, fishing, breathtaking diverse landscape and an understated but supportive and passionate sense of community. Being a musician I have participated in a diverse range of community events and benefits and the generosity and spirit of the people who live here is always overwhelming. Of course work commitments mean I can’t always enjoy these things but it’s good to know they are there. I have no idea what the future holds for Ocean Grove. No doubt it will continue to grow, I won’t get back on the soapbox. Working as teacher at Bellarine Secondary College has given me a good insight into the quality of the people who educate the next generation and the qualities of the young people that are the future of Ocean Grove and I’m not too worried, in fact it’s really quite exciting. To quote a song from that much-maligned decade, The 80’s, “The future’s so bright I’ve got to wear shades.” See you all in the soup.

‘We are the Grove” ORGANISERS of Ocean Grove’s musical fundraiser for Haiti say they were overjoyed by the community response to their disaster appeal. More than $4,300 was raised on the day when a raft of local musicians performed for free at the Uniting Church. Musicians taking part included Sweet Delores, Steve McEwan and the Yes Men, The Rustys, Jill Meehan, Paul and James Carrigg, Jeremy Bennett, Judy Strickland and Zoran Bilogravic, Rose Bygrave and Howlin’ Wind. For the finale many of the musicians that had taken part joined together with choir singers for a rendition of We are the World. The show was introduced by
joint MCs Jon Mamonski and Uniting Church minister James Douglas. Church volunteers and members of Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Lions Club served up sausages, pancakes, cakes and drinks throughout the day and a number of local businesses donated goods to the fundraiser. Co-organiser Lyn Mulligan said others helped her and coorganiser Lyn Calcutt realise the project. “Old men dream dreams, young men have vision. I had both a dream and a vision and the people of the Uniting Church Justice and International Mission group made it come true. The people all contributed, the
singers, the people who donated, the sponsors, there are so many. James Douglas revealed that one anonymous person donated $1000 to the fund “It was fantastic, especially our community support. We are blessed with some amazing artists who gave very generously their time and to the people who gave very generously. We’re stoked. “I had a great time. There were a lot of people (musicians) who played here who I would like to see again at the Chicken Shop, people like Steve McEwan. “It was a great day and a great event, I think we will definitely do something like this again, only with a bit more time to prepare.”

Doors open at RSL OCEAN Grove RSL is throwing open its doors this Sunday. The local branch which is now based at Club Grove is inviting the community to come along and learn more about what they offer. Encouraged partly by the ever stronger public shows of support on ANZAC Day, the Victorian branch of the Returned & Services League of Australia (the RSL) is also hoping to attract new members to their ranks as part of this inaugural state-wide open day. Relatively new Grove member Alan Wettenhall switched to the currently 130-strong branch from the Sebastopol RSL after relocating about four years ago. The former army reservist sergeant who also did national service said that joining the RSL was a welcome link between service and civvy life that is open to service. “What I like about the RSL is the camaraderie, even though in many cases we have a huge age difference.” Alan also explained that membership is not limited to those that served in the army, navy or air force.
“A lot of people might think that. People can become members simply if they have a relative who has served.” He explained that fire, police and ambulance services were also welcome. And membership of the RSL also provides membership to Club Grove thanks to the affiliation that came about in the last two years. As one of the younger members of the local branch Alan sees a great opportunity to help the more senior members who have served their country. “I see my role as supporting the other blokes who have given so much to serve for us. We have almost become a service club within the same service club. “We owe a great debt to these guys.” Alan said that the open day was important in raising community awareness but more so, vital in terms of safeguarding the local organisation: “We hope we might be able to attract some younger members. “Our branch will quite honestly struggle if we do not get more younger members.” During the open day on Sunday

Victorians to keep a close look out for vulnerable people living in their community. The Bellarine Community Register has 28 members and has been operating since 2006. Ann Nichol was the original driving force behind the project which is sponsored by Bellarine Memories and Best of Care. Top of the list of needs is a new computer as well as a volunteer
with experience in websites. Chairman Phil Green thanked the minister for the funding and highlighted the support of the police, particularly Senior Sargeant Gary Coombes, in helping the group get this far. Snr Sgt Gary Coombes said the service was also proving very useful to officers, especially where an elderly person has not been seen for a while. “It’s now getting used more regularly. “We have used it on a few occasions and it has provided crucial information where a neighbour has reported not seeing some for some time and we have been able (through the register) to get in touch with next of kin and account for them.“ In one case recently an elderly person in Point Lonsdale slipped in a shower and was unable to get help. The Victorian Government has pledged the money to the Bellarine Peninsula Community Register, a local initiative run out of the Bellarine Police Station in Ocean Grove and staffed by volunteers. Minister for Community Services Lisa Neville said the initiative would go a long way to assist isolated residents. “It does an amazing job linking vulnerable people with their community and I thank all of the volunteers for their dedication and hard work. “Our $10,000 grant will allow them to continue to play an active role in providing support to those in our community that need it most. “The Registers provide important information about local conditions and safety issues through regular mail outs, newsletters or telephone calls to

LEGEND DUTCH SET FOR PEPPERS SHOW ARGUABLY the Godfather of Australian blues, Dutch Tilders will be performing at Wallington’s Pepper’s Café in March. The venue has scored a massive coup in attracting Dutch who has received over 17 awards in Australia including in the 2006 Australian Blues Music Awards, both Album of the year and Vocalist of the Year, 1998 Inducted into the Australian Blues Music Awards Hall of Fame, 1997 Australian Blues Heritage Award etc. Dutch`s first gig at 15 was playing the harmonica and he did not get his guitar until he was 18. With no one to teach him, he developed his own style that remains unique to himself. His released his first record in
1973 and his collaborators were Phil Manning and Brian Cadd. In that same year he toured with John Mayall and took up music professionally. Dutch historically pioneered Australia’s first direct to disc (lathe) album in 1972. In 1976 he toured with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and stayed close friends with McGhee until he passed away sadly at 82 years in 1996. In 1976, having only ‘heard’ Dutch open for BB King at the Old Geelong Theatre, Kato and B B King both assumed that Dutch was black. When Dutch went backstage to meet B B King and Kato Walker the Third (B B Kings Alto Sax Player)
Kato scratched his head and said to Dutch “How come you’re white?” Dutch answered, “It must be a genetic defect in my family ancestory”. Dutch has excused himself over the years by saying that he only plays the guitar as he doesn’t know what to do with his hands while he sings. He says the blues is the song and the guitar is just the accompaniment, just like the banjo used to be and the lyre long ago. His guitar playing is as extraordinary as his rare vocal range and his finger picking is recognised as world class. Dutch will be performing at Peppers Cafe, 405 Grubb Road, Wallington on Saturday March 20 from 1pm to 4pm. Details and tickets 5250 3689.
Boys beat path to chook shop and Sea Festival OCEAN Grove’s Sambrose Automobile are back at the Chicken Shop next Friday, March 5 and then Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea on March 20. At the Chicken Shop gig the local teen bluesband will be joined by rockin’ Torquay outfit The The Stutterers and keyboardist Mitch Rice.

Anatole Mills and the CJ-6A Nanchang, a ex-Chinese military trainer.
WARBIRD Air Adventures offers the general public the opportunity to fly in genuine ex Air Force aircraft looping, rolling and dogfighting through the sky over the Bellarine Peninsula.
They offer both aerobatic and scenic flights – although about 9 out of 10 passengers opt for the aerobatics. There is no other experience quite like it – this is the king of ‘extreme’ activities:
accelerating from 0 to 350 km/h in under 5 seconds, getting squeezed by over four times the force of gravity – just try and lift your arms! Anatole Mills and his partner, Annabel McPhee, had a fencing construction business in Melbourne that they sold after moving to Ocean Grove in 2007. Anatole grew up around aircraft – his grandfather learnt to fly in a gyrocopter in 1934 and flew over 10,000 hours in light aircraft, his father has been flying in the bush for over 40 years and “I basically flew with him where ever he went when I was younger. I was plane mad! It wasn’t until my early twenties I had saved up enough to get my pilot’s license – even though I already had many hours being the ‘autopilot’ while my father relaxed and took in the scenery” says Anatole.

Eric Jakubzik and staff vehicle repairer Clint at Peninsula Collision Repairs on the Industrial Estate.
EXPERIENCED auto repair specialist Eric Jakubzik has opened up a new hi-tech workshop in Ocean Grove. Eric, who has been in the trade for more than 30 years, started out as an apprentice spray painter for a small business in Geelong. During his time as an apprentice he won apprentice of the year. “Since then I have worked at a couple of different panel shops in the Geelong area starting out as a spray painter
then onto paint shop foreman which lead me into the area of workshop manager then onto management positions,” he explained. “Needing a change I then went to work for a paint company, I became a technical sales rep which involved selling products and training all the painters in the panel shops how to use the product, this took me all over Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales. “With all this knowledge my partner and I decided it was
time to branch out and open our own business. “We decided on Ocean Grove to set up our business as we found it is a growing seaside town and like most locals would prefer to deal locally than go to Geelong. The new business is called Peninsula Collision Repairs and it deals in all aspects of car repairs from that small little scratch to major repairs. “We deal with all major insurance companies so we can handle all the paper work for our customers when they come in. We also deal with certified roadworthy rust repairs, resprays and custom work. “At the moment we have three staff members which include my partner Vikki handling the accounts, Clint repairing vehicles and myself doing quoting and spray painting. “The business has been open since December and we are gradually getting busier each week, we have plans to expand in the future with the intention of having at least another 2-3 staff members on board.” The business also has two courtesy cars freely available to customers and they offer a free pickup and delivery service. Eric and Vikki have been together for 16 years and have four young children ranging in age from 4 to 15, and they all play a variety of sports from baseball, cricket, swimming and dancing. Outside of the business Eric is an avid gardener and angler.
The Voice Professional 5255 3233 ads@oceangrovevoice.com
The business started in Cairns and Townsville, but being Ocean Grovers originally they wanted to start the summer operation closer to home – which they did by opening at Barwon Heads Airport last year. “We wouldn’t be anywhere else!” says Anatole. “I grew up next to the sea in Tasmania and Annabel lived in Barwon Heads for many years – I used to drive down from Melbourne as often as I could and get straight to the beach, blustering south-westerly or not – we just love it down here.” So far, the business has had a great start and they have found the response from everyone here to be fantastic. In the future Anatole and Annabel plan on expanding to two aircraft and employing two or more pilots. They say that there is plenty of local flying talent around getting
trained right here at the Barwon Heads Airport Flying School. Anatole says ”We’d like everyone to come and experience this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity! Our customers come from all over, from tourists on the Great Ocean Road to people from Ocean Grove, Geelong and Melbourne looking for that perfect gift for a friend or loved one.” They would like to be involved in the community somehow – sponsoring a sports team/person, tree planting or a conservation project. They will be looking into this in the near future. Outside of work, Anatole’s passions are “Flying! O wait, that is my job” says Anatole. “Swimming in the breakers down at 7W. I wish I could surf!” More: www.flyingwarbirds.com.au

THIS scorpion (pictured right) was found in our back garden in Ocean Grove, in the sandpit which has a cover over it. Thanks to Noah, Callum, Sue and Meg for pointing out this interesting creature! Scorpions belong to the Arachnid Group, which are invertebrate animals (they don’t have a backbone). All arachnids have eight legs, although in some species the front pair may serve a sensory function. The term is derived from the Greek word meaning “spider”. Almost all arachnids are terrestrial (land dwelling). However, some inhabit freshwater and marine environments. Scorpions are common arachnids found in gardens, deserts and forests throughout Australia. They are distinguished from other arachnids because they possess a large pair of pincers and a tail with a venomous sting on the tip. The tip of the tail was difficult to see in this scorpion as it was covered in spider web and other debris from the sand pit. They are found under logs, rocks and in shallow burrows in earth banks. The desert species
construct deep burrows in the sand, I assume to escape from the heat during the day. Australia has about 80 species of scorpions, and Victoria has nine known species. They are widely distributed, but although there are many more species in the drier parts of Australia, scorpions are found in quite cool and wet regions of Australia, plus in Ocean Grove sandpits. Scorpions are mostly nocturnal but they can be active during the day, especially during prolonged wet weather. Scorpions tend to be larger and more venomous in the northern parts of Australia (that’s a relief!). Scorpions are often feared because of the sting on their tail and the potential lethal nature of the venom. Several thousand people die each year from scorpion stings, but these deaths are from the stings of about 25 species that are found in northern Africa, the Middle East, India, Mexico and parts of South America. None of these potentially lethal species occur in Australia. (Phew). The Australian species can inflict a painful sting that results in swelling and pain for several hours, but there have not been any confirmed deaths of people

from stings from Australian scorpions. For this reason our sandpit is banned from any activity in the near future. Scorpions are nocturnal hunters, feeding mainly on arthropods such as beetles, cockroaches, spiders, slaters, centipedes and millipedes. Female scorpions give birth to live young. She carries the young scorpions on her back for the first few days or weeks, until they are strong enough to become
independent. Scorpions take a long time to reach maturity, moulting frequently (up to five or six times over two to six years) in order to grow, and may live for two to ten years. Some have been recorded as living up to 25 years. I sincerely hope the scorpion in our sandpit doesn’t live for that long, that’s a long time for the sandpit to be out of bounds. The largest Australian scorpions can grow to 12cm long! Yikes! By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest. Play it safe by the water With many warm summer days still ahead our beaches will continue to be very popular. We have Beach Safety Signs at every beach access pathway...........take the time to read the safety advice. Dog Free Beaches The dog free beaches declaration changed as from 1st February with dogs allowed back on the Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), but they must be on a leash until the end of April. This also applies to the Barwon River beaches. From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Ocean Grove Spit – Landscape Masterplan The key matters addressed in our draft Landscape Masterplan released mid December include the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and reviewing the existing provision of amenity blocks with the potential reduction in numbers, more strategically located and more environmentally sustainable. We are also investigating the best linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands . A draft of the Landscape Plan is available for review at www.barwoncoast.com.au/riversidecamping and at our offices. We are looking for community feedback by the end of February 2010 which can be sent to Barwon Coast c/- Post Office Barwon Heads 3227 Powered watercraft speed Barwon Coast is working in partnership with the Victorian Water Police and the Bellarine Police to raise awareness of the 5knot water speed limit in the Barwon River Estuary. This speed limit applies to all water craft including Jet Skis
Hodgson St Car Park The car park at the bottom of Hodgson St Ocean Grove is a very popular access point to the ocean beach. Whilst not a patrolled beach area, the area is popular with dog owners being the access point to the beach area where dogs are permitted under effective control and where picnic tables are provided for great views of the coast. The pedestrian cycling trail from Collendina thru to Barwon Heads along the coast also adjoins the car park. We have released a draft masterplan for the area that proposes the redevelopment of the car park to provide for safer traffic movement; a better interface with the pedestrian / cycling trail; improved stormwater management and revegetation work. The draft landscape plan is now on display at Hodgson St near the beach access, for your perusal. Barwon Coast is looking for feedback on the draft plans by the end of February, prior to those plans being lodged with the Department of Sustainability & Environment for Coastal Management Act consent Funding Our Operations Over 95% of our $3.9million revenue budget 09/10 is generated through the operation of our caravan parks and the surplus funds from the caravan park operations are used to provide $1million for our coastal management activities and over $600,000 to fund capital works such as the demolition and rebuilding of the toilet and shower block at the Ocean Grove Main Beach. Within that revenue base approx $650,000 comes from the operation of our built accommodation component of the caravan parks. At Barwon Heads there are 19 accommodation units including the 4star Beach and Boat Houses that have very high occupancy rates (approx 85% year round) and contribute substantially to our operating funds. Two fur seals square up on the ‘Chinaman’s Hat’. There’s only one winner.
Sun sets on Pope’s Eye - an Australasian Ganet breeding colony - with Lonsdale lighthouse in distance.
On a voyage of bay discovery LIVING on our beautiful ocean, us Grovers could be excused for being a little “our sea’s bigger than your sea” when referring to the bay on the other side of the peninsula. We have surf, wide open and undeveloped beaches and heaps of space to escape the crowds. But a sunset cruise out with the Friends of the Marine Discovery Centre reminded me just how much
more we have on our doorstep if we just take a 15 minute drive. About 20 of us, including several other Ocean Grovers took the two hour boat ride on the Kyena across to the Chinaman’s Hat and Pope’s Eye. Chinaman’s Hat if you don’t know is an octagonal structure in the South Channel of Port Phillip Bay and it is occupied by Australasian Fur Seals. Pope’s Eye is an artificial

During the cruise we enjoyed the enthusiastic talent of Pam Haebich, Education Officer at the Marine Discovery Centre, and even got up close with a sample of fish and plant
life from 9m below the surface. The sunsets from out on the bay are awesome, as is the sight of the vast ocean going cruise liners heading out through the bay. You don’t have to be a friend of the Marine Discovery Centre to enjoy this type of cruise but if you interested in learning more about what lies along the coast and getting actively involved in promoting the Centre’s

A chance to get involved with local animal sanctuary
JIRRAHLINGA Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary is looking for sponsors. The sanctuary, which is situated in Barwon Heads, is one of the largest privately owned wildlife sanctuaries in Victoria. Along with caring for over 400 animals living in the Sanctuary, Team Rescue Jirrahlinga also attends over 5,000 calls every year to rescue injured and orphaned native animals. Over the years, Jirrahlinga has cared for thousands of animals with most being successfully treated, re-habilitated and released back into their natural environment. In spite of this, the Sanctuary receives no government funding at all. Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary is inviting you to support their critical mission by

Fitness for women on the go. Both Paula and Chris Clark have got off to a winning start in 2010.
Getting access to an ANZ Business Specialist is easy. Running a small business is enough to keep you on your toes without having to chase business bankers. Last week saw the Ocean Grove Golf Club resume competition. On Thursday Paula Clark won ‘A’ Grade Ladies, with a fine score of 40 stableford points. On Saturday, husband Chris, won the men’s competion with the great score of 80-19-61. Chris not only shot the score of the day but also won the Quarterly Medal, and gets his name up on the
Medal Board. Paula already has her name on the board from previous years, so now Chris has equal bragging rights. Paula this week was runner up in the Ladies competition losing on a count back to the winner on 38 points. Can Chris match this?
Surfside Friday Volleyball Results from games for 12.2.10 Division 1 Phantoms Black vs Stingers Phantoms Black winning 3 sets 25-13, 25-18, 17-11 6 Pact vs Bandits Draw 6 Pact winning 25-14, 14-25, Bandits way, 7-9 Good game to watch this one, as 6 Pact have some new players who are starting to jell as a team. Some great passing and spiking from Harrison Foott and great work with Daniel Kuklych doing some really great spiking as well
to help his team to win the first set. Second set saw Bandits win with some great team work with everyone playing their part. Steve Clarke did some great back court spikes and Jon Lingham who was helping out their team did some really good spiking as well. Last set was going to be a close one but time ran out for both teams. Great play by both teams. Team Wave vs Phantoms Devils Phantoms Devils winning 2 sets and Team Wave winning 1 set Devils 26-24, 13-25, 21-17.
Team Wave really put the pressure on Phantoms Devils in this game as Devils were playing with 5 players and had some new players coming up from Division 2, so they are still learning their positions. Team Wave played together well as a team considering they have only 3 original players from last season. Peter Caddy did some great spiking and will only improve in the coming weeks, he’ll be one to watch. This team has some great potential seeing as there are players
who have played regularly and also at teachers games and competitively on tournaments as well. As they play more regularly as a team you will see some great things from this team. Keep an eye out for this team. Division 2 Grovers vs Hit Me Grovers winning in 3 sets 25-15,25-14,25-19, 13-6 Tiprats vs Young Ones Tiprats winning in 4 sets 25-6, 25-10, 25-3,25-16, 6-3

victorian old mal titles
Big board festa’ SOUL Longboard club ran the Victorian Old Mal titles at Ocean Grove earlier this month. With a reasonable half to 1metre swell and an incoming tide it was down to business early with the first heat in the water by 8am. There were plenty of old boards and old cars on display in keeping with the Old Mal theme. One of the legends of the old mal era, George Rice, was on hand to sign a few of his boards and explain some of the history behind them too. SOUL President Brian Tucker said; “Even though we haven’t got great conditions today, at least there is swell and contestable waves for the whole day. The club
has worked hard to put this event on for the old mal surfers and it’s great to see the support we’ve got from our sponsors and from guys like George Rice, Wayne Lynch and the local community.” With the wind getting stronger and the tide starting to turn the finals hit the water about 2 pm. Some great action was on show with the best old mal surfers around trying to get the highest scoring waves. Big manoeuvres and great nose riding on the old boards showed just what can be done in less than perfect waves. Jordie Brown carried on the good form he’s been in lately by taking out the under 40’s division. Ben Considine showed
that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years and had a good result with second. No doubt Tim Edwards would like to have placed a bit better than third but in the conditions it is still a good result. Defending Title holder Jordan Noble finished but said that he wasn’t too worried about it. In the over 40’s Scott Wintle once again showed his great style and skill that’s been developed over the years to finish first. Lee Considine kept the family’s name in the results with a solid second. Brian Thompson showed that he is always a threat no matter what class or type of board he’s
on with third. John Storm didn’t waste his ferry ticket with a good fourth place. A great day was had by all with a lot of interest shown by all sorts of people coming down to the main beach and with plenty of coffee and food from the barby everyone’s looking forward to doing it all again next year The winners in the two divisions were: Over 40’s: 1. Scott Wintle (defending champion), 2. Lee Considine, 3. Brian Thompson, 4. John Storm Under 40’s: 1. Jordie Brown, 2. Ben Considine, 3. Tim Edwards, 4. Jordan Noble. By Andrew Brown.

soul new season
Signies hosts MASSIVE SAVINGS! first of 2010 DRYSDALE
SOUL Longboard club kicked off its 2010 season with a perfect beach day, mild northerly winds feathering a moderate half to 1m swell and some good little banks. The comp was held at Signposts at 13th beach and a good turnout of about 40 surfers, including three new members, gathered for the first comp held under the new scoring system. All surfers’ names are put in a hat at the beginning of the day and you then surf a grading heat. Where you finish in your heat is where you then surf in your final. There were a few teething problems
but all in all the competitors seemed to get used to it, and it guarantees that all competitors get to surf in a final, as well as getting two surfs for the day. With a number of new members and with the new system, competitors surfed with people they probably hadn’t surfed with before. Everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the commeradery of the day. The next comp is March 20. Keep an eye on the web site for further details www.soullongboardclub.com.au By Andrew Brown.

REBOUND OZ Children are becoming increasingly short-sighted due to the amount of time focusing on close objects such as books, computer screens and TV. To avoid eye damage, children must spend increased time outdoors where they can focus on objects further away. The action of bouncing actually stimulates the release of endorphins (mood-lifting natural chemicals) which help overcome negativity, depression, pain and anxiety. These positive moods will promote and stimulate better social interaction in your child. Trampolining also relieves tension, fatigue and anger. The right trampoline will give you excellent value for money, making it perfect for those on a budget. Trampolining will combat the negative side-effects of TV over-indulgence and replace them with healthy positives. Excessive TV viewing is also detrimental to balance and co-ordination. Kids must be encouraged to get out there and move. Trampolining is especially good at building and strengthening bones and muscles, resulting in better balance, co-ordination and posture. Bouncing also positively influences spatial awareness, height/depth perception, reaction speed and stamina. Contact TrampolinesOZ on www.trampolinesoz.com.au or 1300 851 691. BELLARINE REMEDIAL & SPORTS MASSAGE The change in seasons often means muscle pain. Summer sport finals and start of winter sport can cause strains. Pant to pub via beach Ocean Grove’s annual Hangover Harriers’ Pub to Pub was run in February, this year with a slightly altered course due to the bridge construction. Despite this change the runners still enjoyed a great low tide beach run back to the Ocean Grove Hotel.
HEYWARD CONSTRUCTIONS P/L
As if the Pub to Pub isn’t unique enough! The three Phils which could have been four if Philip Christian had been fit - Phil Day, Phil Emery (the Grand Master!) and Philippe Choukroun of Reunion Island.
ANOTHER prestigious Pub to Pub event has been completed with the usual amount of controversy - and success. The world renouned Start-O-Meter fired on cue as usual, this year with an appropriate bridge connection. “The crowd was held spellbound as the Duplo crane did the trick of bursting the balloon and setting off the bell,” race reporter commented. The first place went to Saskia Holloway and there was a strong showing from the English and Scottish contingent among the runners. The Harriers run 7.5km from the Main Beach toilet block at 7am every Saturday morning, new runners are always welcome to join in.
