BELLARINE police say they are reacting proactively to a noticable but not alarming spike in the number of cannabis use incidences they are coming across. Last week police arrested a 40-year-old Ocean Grove man in relation to supplying cannabis. A 38-year-old woman is also expected to be questioned at a later stage. “We are trying to target people that are using and dealing drugs in our area,” explained Leading Senior Constable Laurie Taylor. Earlier in the month police discovered an alleged commercial crop of cannabis at a property in Lings Road. “We’ve not got as big a problem as Geelong but we have seen a spike in people using (cannabis).” Sen Const Taylor added that police had come across an increasing number of 16-21 year olds smoking cannabis in cars.

Going back to their youth OCEAN Grove’s former youth club members held a reunion at the town park on Sunday. About 25 former attendees enjoyed reminising, a good catch up and lunch under the sunshade. Co-organiser Juliana Chapman said she was very happy with the numbers they managed to get together.

Michael Pape at the crossing where his mother was partially knocked over.
AN Ocean Grove man is calling for council action on the Parade crossings after his elderly mother had her walker clipped by a car. Michael Pape says fortunately his mother wasn’t hurt in the incident but she did have to see a doctor to be checked over. His mother Dorothy is 88.
“It shook her up,” he said. “It’s a death trap. I think something has got to be done. “Does someone have to be killed? I called over to the police and they said they get a lot of complaints.” Last month the Voice received a number of letters from residents concerned that the two crossings

are either not well enough signposted or need lights to warn drivers. The City says it has trimmed trees and signage and line markings had been improved. The Voice understand now that city engineers are currently “reviewing the existing arrangement”.

Thank you! Dear Editor I am wishing to say “thankyou” to the kind person who handed in my mobile phone to the desk at Coles a fortnight ago. I had not realised I had dropped my phone while shopping and so was very pleased to find it had been handed in. Getting my phone back saved me lots of anxiety, costs and inconvience. I do thankyou for your kind deed. Please accept my personal thanks. Beverley O’Meara Ocean Grove
Not in sin bin I have just received the new waste collection calendar, and
with that there was a little folder that explains where to bring or in what bin to put different kinds of waste. It says empty batteries go in the red bin.... I always thought batteries were chemical waste, so I called the customer service (the number is on the folder, very convenient). After holding the line for a while, they got back to me with: “oh yeah, we are very sorry but that shouldn’t have been on there, batteries need to be disposed of at a resource recovery centre (in Drysdale or Geelong).... That shouldn’t have happened, that is a mistake, we are very sorry.” I really think they should at least put out an extra note to try to correct this, or put an article in the paper or do something to get people not to throw their batteries in the bin. I get so annoyed with the council sometimes... It’s actually funny that this was the thing (batteries) it happened with, as I am always telling all my friends not to throw them in the red bin but collect them and bring them to the tip, and everyone always reacts very
surprised when I tell them it’s chemical waste. I am always trying to recycle, save water, pick up wrappers on the beach, and I don’t think a lot of Australians are very careful with their environment, but with councils making these kinds of mistakes (and this is just a little example), no wonder! How many people do you know that fill their recycling bins with other garbage, and say: “ who cares”, or “it all ends up on the same pile anyway”? Personally, I know a couple, and I don’t like them for it, but unless councils start fining people that do put the wrong kind of garbage in the wrong bin, what can we do about it? I hope one day people will start thinking about what they are leaving behind for their kids, instead of just thinking of themselves. I hope people won’t throw their batteries in the red bin, or anything that doesn’t belong in the red, yellow or green bins, and think about what they buy and throw away... Kat de Bruijn Ocean Grove

day in the life - jon willard
A song, a surf and a walk with the kids
I GREW up in Sherbrooke in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne. My earliest memories of The Grove are as an 18 year old coming down to the coast to hang out at the beach, and see bands at The Boatshed and the Barwon Heads Pub. Later on we had a holiday van in Queenscliff and spent a lot of time on the Bellarine. I guess I have been the quintessential sea changer. Previously in Melbourne, I was employed by a multinational corporation as Victorian sales manager before opening my own floor coverings warehouse in Coburg. After burning out in the confines of city life, we moved to Ocean Grove where I took up study at Deakin. I began working as a musician to earn extra money whilst studying. Scope disability services asked me to do some entertaining. I then wrote a music therapy program to be offered to people with a disability. The program was developed and grown and I still work with Scope and Karingal delivering the program. Further to this, I work nights as a musician entertaining at various venues and functions locally, in Geelong, and in Melbourne. I am involved in the local music scene here. Previously in Melbourne, I ran open mic nights once a fortnight for musician’s. In my mind, tennis players get to play comp tennis, footballers get to play football, but amateur musicians don’t often have the opportunity to do their thing outside of their home. When I moved to Ocean Grove, I began the first open mic for the area at Phil’s Bar in Barwon Heads in 2002. This concept quickly took hold and was well supported until the time Phil closed his doors to move on to other projects. I then moved it to the Ocean Grove Hotel. The nights progressed well
Jon Willard and his children Jackson and Georgia.
and we often had upwards of 100 people attending. I burnt myself out after about 12 months, ( doing the open mic, working a day job, rearing two kids and then gigging 2-4 nights a week), and Steve Messina was good enough to stand in and continue in my absence. The Ocean Grove Hotel then closed in around 2007 for 12 months, so Steve moved the open mic nights across to the BHP. During this transition, Kerry Maxwell of Bar Deli approached me to start an open mic night at Bar Deli on Monday nights that Greg Southall now runs. Again the night has been very successful and well supported. Since then the Ocean Grove Hotel has re opened and Dave Doorman is running a very successful and well attended open mic on Sat afternoons at the pub. Also during this time John Bowman of The Piping Hot Chicken Shop began an open mic for the youth of Ocean Grove. He has also been booking some fantastic artists on Friday & Saturday nights. Some of the open mic muso’s have gone on to play professionally and become recording musicians and local business’ have been engaging others to entertain at their bars, restaurants etc. Also, we have a local musicians
networking social web site group called B.U.Ms, (Bellarine Underground Musicians.) I am also involved with the Soul Longboarders Surf Club and have been since their inception in 2005. They are a great family orientated club. I love the monthly comp days, (when I can make it), at Ocean Grove main beach. And, I love the social presentations and gatherings throughout the year. President Brian Tucker and his committee have done a fantastic job over the last few years. Especially with events, like the Old Mal comp where they stage a retro comp day. Boards must be pre 1966 in this comp. It’s a great day and it’s a credit to the club when guys like Wayne Lynch turn up for the day as well as all the top trad surfers from across the state. The Soul Longboarders have also been very active with the DSA, (Disabled Surfers Association). I have also previously been in involved with the DSA who in 2008 began offering a surfing experience to anyone with a disability. Again, the Ocean Grove community responded well on the first training day offered by the DSA. Over 150 people turned up including many prominent local identities like Peter Mobbs from K-Rock/Bay-FM who donated their time freely
and actively in the water. My number one passion is my two kids, Jackson 6y/o, & Georgia 11y/o. It’s Jacksons first year of school at Our Lady Star of the Sea, and Georgia is in year 6 at Christian College. In 2003, Principal of Star Of The Sea, Rhonda Boyd, commissioned me to write an anthem for the school. Engaging the help of a friend, Chris Crook of Barwon Heads, we wrote the song, recorded it with the school kids, and had it played on Bay FM. It was a fantastic experience, and I must admit to feeling a little pride when Jackson comes home and says, “we sang your song again today Dad”. Mornings begin with a dawn surf occasionally, then waking my 2 kids. We now live with my partner Dianne, and its action stations to get ready for school. Then it’s off to Geelong for me to work at Scope or Karingal. Back to Ocean Grove after work, shopping on the way home. Housework followed by picking up kids from school. Then run Georgia to ballet, or we all go for a surf. Homework, cook dinner, bath n bed for the kids, then time for me to do paperwork etc, and any program development I need to do. Ocean Grove is a great place and I wouldn’t even consider living anywhere else. It is a progressive
seaside town expanding rapidly. I think the expansion is inevitable, and I hope enough consideration is given for our towns’ infrastructure to keep pace with development. Also, I do think we need to consider and protect our natural seaside holiday charm. I would also like to see consideration given to developing green belts or buffers to break up the expanding housing developments along with developing a stronger sense of the history of our community through art and culture. The Terrace has change immensely in the past 5 years. Now, since the development of the Target complex, there are a number of business’ moving out and moving in constantly so I guess there are many changes happening as our community needs are changing. My favourite business’ in Ocean Grove are hospitality. We love to eat and socialise, so the restaurants, cafes and bars are well frequented by us. Also they have embraced live music in their venues and it’s great to be able to venture down the street for some great local entertainment or, nationally and internationally renowned acts. I feel that we have a great sense of charity and benevolence in Ocean Grove. Not just in our own community but to wherever in the world that it is needed. I have had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of local charitable events and projects. It is incredibly heartening to see the effort that people put in, and the sense that if an individual is suffering, then we as a community are suffering alongside them and are very quick to respond. Our charity extends across the globe. Recently local musicians staged a benefit concert for Haiti at the Church Hall in Eggleston St. The local music community
saw a need and rose to the challenge. Is there anything missing in Ocean Grove, more parking? A local arts and cultural centre. If I was Ocean Grove’s mayor for the day, I would definitely initiate plans to build an arts, culture and performance centre similar to what has been achieved with The Potato Shed in Drysdale. Though, I believe that the Ocean Grove Arts Network is pushing ahead with this plan already. So I guess If I was Mayor I would get rid of the recent introduction of half hour parking in The Terrace. If I could open a shop in Ocean Grove? I don’t think I would. We are really well serviced in Ocean Grove and I take my hat off to all the incredibly hard working folk in our local businesses. I don’t think that I could work as hard as they do, so I will leave it to the experts. I love “The Voice. I watched with real interest as Alan and crew first began the Ocean Grove Voice, I think in about 2004/2005. Even though it has experienced different formats, it has always been a great read delivering all the necessary local news and goss as well reflecting the
PIES
&
views of our community. The Ocean Grove Voice is unique with its strong bond with the people of our community. I love reading through the pages and seeing mates, friends and people I know and what they are up to. My favourite place in Ocean Grove is definitely the beach. It’s a community hub for me. I can go down there at almost any time and indulge in one of my favourite activities as well as catch up with great friends. The beach is the great leveller. When you are rubbered up and sitting out the back on your board It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, or where you come from and folk there will always keep your feet on the ground. Localism is such a problem at surf breaks around the world. Ocean Grove seems to have surpassed this and is very accepting of everyone and all ability’s. I, and my family have had many great experiences and opportunities through music and surfing in and around Ocean Grove. There is nowhere else I would rather be. It is a fantastic place and aside from all the great things it has to offer, It’s the people here who really make it such a great place.

Kitchen’s cooking SURFSIDE’s Kitchen Garden classroom is finally finished. Grade 3 and 4 students started cooking in the new facility earlier this month. In the pictures students were preparing food for an afternoon kitchen tea attended by parents. The school still needs dinner sets, pots and pans, utensils and other
small items to fit out the kitchen but they are up and running. The project has involved a range of local supporters and the kitchen tea was supported by Ocean Grove Home Hardware. The school will be having an official opening in April to celebrate with all its generous sponsors, volunteers and school community.

Jazz aficionados are slowing coming around to the fact that the Grove finally has a venue that’s fitting for their kind of music. On Saturday night the mighty Anton Delecca Quartet returned to play their silky sounds. The quartet’s pianist and composer Luke Howard is returning to Melbourne from Berlin to perform

at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival on May 5 in the Melbourne Recital Centre. He will be joined by bass player Jonathon Zion and drummer Daniel Farrugia. What’s great for local audiences is that this trio - The Luke Howard Trio - will perform at the chicken shop on Thursday 23 April in preparation for that massive jazz festival.
Blues maestro Dutch Tilders performed to a packed Peppers Cafe on Sunday afternoon. He returns to the area on April 17 for a show at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop.

Time to change alarm batteries OCEAN Grove CFA has sent out an urgent reminder to locals to change their smoke alarm batteries in a bid to avoid a tragedy this winter. A spokesman for the CFA said: “A household fire can spread and engulf a home in the blink of an eye, destroying property, personal possessions and lives. Smoke alarms give an early warning sign to alert occupants, giving them time to take action and evacuate - but only if they work.” The Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery campaign aims to promote the importance of working smoke alarms. At the end of daylight saving, CFA together with Duracell, are urging all Ocean Grove residents to change their smoke alarm batteries when they turn back their clocks. CFA witness horrific house fires every year and sadly, not everyone gets out safely. In 2009, MFB and CFA attended 3,192 residential fires and this year they are aiming to significantly reduce this figure. “Last year 22 lives were lost to household fires in Victoria, and tragically
in many cases working smoke alarms were not present. This is why we are urging all Victorian households to use the end of daylight saving as the day to change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery and potentially save lives,” said CFA CEO Mick Bourke. CFA recommends that all residents replace their smoke alarm batteries with long-lasting alkaline batteries and be aware all smoke alarms have a lifespan of approximately ten years. It is advised that you check your smoke alarm for the service date (the date when the alarm may no longer work) indicated on the base of each smoke alarm and replace it accordingly, regardless of use. As part of the campaign, 13,000 Duracell batteries will be distributed to vulnerable and elderly people throughout CFA and MFB areas. “Statistics show a working smoke alarm reduces the likelihood of death in a house fire by 60 per cent. CFA and MFB will work to distribute batteries to those from vulnerable groups in areas across the state,” said Mr Bourke.
Smoke Alarm Safety Tips:
Ocean Grove Firefighter Andrew Cooper helps remind us that it’s time to install new batteries in our smoke alarms.
• Only purchase smoke alarms that carry the Australian Standards symbol • Install smoke alarms outside the sleeping areas on every level of your house and where people sleep with their doors closed, install a smoke alarm in the bedroom • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly • Clean smoke alarms every year by vacuuming the sensing chamber • Try to avoid locating smoke alarms near cooking appliances and bathrooms. Smoke alarms are very sensitive and will activate with the smallest amount of smoke or steam.
Win a Fire Safety Pack! AS part of our campaign to support the CFA smoke alarm message we are giving Voice readers the chance to win one of three Duracell Fire Safety Packs. Each pack contains a Duracell Firefighter Bunny, a smoke blanket
and an all-important smoke alarm with fresh batteries. In order to win one of these great packs all you have to do is answer the following question – what date do the clocks go back?
Ring road ‘priority’ THE City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr John Mitchell and CEO Stephen Griffin told Premier John Brumby and the Victorian cabinet that a Bellarine extension of the Geelong ring road was one of the region’s top funding priorities. Other priorities included the upgrade of Geelong’s arts and culture precinct, and the redevelopment of the Yarra Street Pier “We took the opportunity to present our region’s most important funding priorities to the Victorian Government whilst they were here for their community cabinet meeting (in Torquay),” said Cr John Mitchell. “It was a further opportunity to impress on the Premier the strategic importance of the Geelong region given the growth pressures facing Melbourne and to highlight the critical projects for which
we are seeking partnership with state government to fund,” said the Mayor. “Projects such as Future Cities; the arts and culture precinct upgrade, the Geelong Marine Industry Project and the Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre have the potential to provide a significant economic stimulus to regional Victoria,” said Cr Mitchell. “Other projects such as the Geelong Cultural Precinct Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Plan and an extension of the Ring Road have a critical role to play to ease the pressure of population growth.” What do you think? Should our (Ocean Grove and the Bellarine) priority be an extension to the Ring Road or do locals want a light railway and improved public transport infrastructure? Email news@ oceangrovevoice.com
Send your answers to: news@ oceangrovevoice.com or Ocean Grove Voice, PO Box 54, Ocean Grove 3226. Please include your postal address and phone number. The closing date is April 2.

On Thursday March 11 Saint Ignatius College held a ‘Shave for a Cure’ in the gym during lunchtime with large numbers of students looking on. The Social Justice Community organized this event to be part of the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave, which is one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events. Money raised is used by the Leukaemia Foundation to fund free services to support patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related
blood disorders. It also funds blood cancer research to find better treatments and cures. Saint Ignatius College, Geelong had 12 students who volunteered to shave and 1 brave teacher, Indonesian teacher Bu Hall. Large numbers of students not shaving involved themselves on the day by choosing to donate money to have their hair coloured and also by attending the lunchtime shave show. So far the students have raised over $4500.

Cats visit Christian College Bellarine ON Wednesday the 17th of March, the Geelong footballers came to Christian College Bellarine to teach the kids the simple rules of Aussie rules football. Kids came along with their favourite football team colours. Ryan Gamble and Jessie Stringer (Geelong footballers) showed the kids to handball, kick and mark. The kids enjoyed the fun games
and skills they learnt. Most kids enjoyed the handballing and marking but most kids prefer the kicking, too many goals from every angle. At the end the footballers were surrounded by fans and couldn’t get away. I’m sure that the kids who came to the day will never forget this day. Michaela Caldow 7S

By Iman Alfrink (Our Lady Star Of the Sea grade 6 student) On the 16th of February Our Lady Star of the Sea primary school had their AMAZING and DELICIOUS Pancake Tuesday. Now you Probably want to know what this Pancake Tuesday is all about…..? Am I right? Pancake Tuesday is where family and friends head their way down to Our LADY star of the Sea and pay a gold coin donation and they’re given a yummy pancake made freshly by volunteer mums.
They also get a choice’s of toppings out of maple syrup, jam, butter, lemon and sugar. Some people like me had a little more than we should have had. But we can’t help it when they’re so delicious. The supported donations then are given Caritas. Caritas then give the donations to the needing people to help them with all they’re needs. This year we raised $524.20 for Caritas. And we all enjoyed Pancake Tuesday at our school!

Open day and celebration SUNDAY March 14 was Open Day at Saint Ignatius College. It was the celebration, at the end of Catholic Education Week, where the College opened its doors to the community. Over 200 students, all staff and many parents and friends of the College ‘showcased’ the school with great enthusiasm, and were unflagging in their commitment to present well the myriad of challenging and rewarding programs and wonderful facilities provided here in the spacious rural setting on the Bellarine Peninsula. One of the College’s major focuses was on celebrating Catholic Co-education at the secondary level, being unique in the region as the only Catholic Coeducational Secondary school. The College was keen to demonstrate the inestimable benefits that stem from young men and women working collaboratively together in a vibrant educational community, which fosters competence, conscience
and compassion. All visitors were able to observe how first-rate educational outcomes are pursued facilitated by a broad curriculum and an established pastoral care program. The College community was thrilled by the attendance of over 1500 interested visitors from the region who were keen to spend their Sunday learning more about our College. The students were great ambassadors for their College, impressing the interested guests with their skills, confidence and knowledge in the many activities in which they were involved. Science, LOTE, choir
singing, musical performance, artwork, Hospitality students prepared and cooked for the1800 people who were here for the day-visitors, students and staff, And there were also diplays of wood, metal, robotics, building and construction and automotive skills, maths games and puzzles, textiles, discussions on social justice and Saint Ignatius’ two recent tours to Asia and India The Information session run by Deputy Principal Ms Kerry Sidaway, was engaging and inspiring and included fine words of support for our College from the President of the Canonical

Lions set for a super sizzle OCEAN Grove Barwon Heads Lions are cooking up the super sizzle in the Terrace next month. The 2010 Lions Biggest BBQ is on in April with many of the Lions Clubs around Australia
working together to encourage Australian communities to support the efforts of the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia in striving towards a better future for the children and their families affected by childhood cancer. Many of the 1,400 Lions Clubs of Australia will hold barbecues during April to raise
funds for medical research into the causes and prevention of, and to find a cure for, childhood cancer. The Lions Clubs of Australia have raised over $4 million since 1996, because “Lions believe that every child deserves the chance to grow up”. The Lions Club of Ocean
Grove Barwon Heads is playing its part in this effort. “Our Lions Biggest BBQ to raise funds for childhood cancer research will be held on Easter Saturday, 3rd April, from 10 am to 2pm, at the front of Westpac Bank in The Terrace, Ocean Grove”, said Club President John Brady. “We hope local people and
visitors alike will drop by and purchase a sausage or hamburger, or just make a small donation for this cause.” Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation with more than 1.3 million members in 46,000 clubs in 193 countries and geographic areas. In addition to its efforts
towards conquering health problems, the organisation has made a strong commitment to community service and helping youth throughout the world. The Lions Club of Ocean Grove Barwon Heads has been conducting service locally and in the wider community since 1955.
Local Starlight rallies support OCEAN Grove mum Amy Stevens has seen at first hand the benefits of the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Her daughter Tamryn’s experience and traumas as a very sick child needing a kidney transplant has led to eight years of involvement with the charity. Now Amy is joining with the Foundation to urge locals to support them in fundraising this May. Amy and her team will be at Westfield and Market Square raising awareness and funds between the 6th and 9th of May. The Foundation will be selling Starlight Day merchandise to help raise $2.8 million to ensure Starlight can brighten the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised
children across Australia Amy said that what drew her to Starlight was her daughter’s experience with Starlight and seeing the effect it had on her. “Seeing firsthand the magical effect Captain Starlight’s visit had on my daughter propelled me to give back to Starlight as they’ve given us so much,” she said. “As a location leader for Starlight Day this year, I aim to engage the public in a playful and fun way which shows the kind of work Starlight do. “The magical environment we create for Starlight Day always attracts the general public and encourages them to donate,” she said. “Captain Starlight helps kids feel magic and happiness when
they need it the most so whatever I can do to spread the magic, I will.” There are over 600,000 child admissions to Australian hospitals every year and currently Starlight is only able to reach “1 in 3”. Starlight’s ultimate goal is to enable every seriously ill child the opportunity to access and benefit from Starlight’s innovative programs. The support from the Australian public this Starlight Day will help Starlight reach these seriously ill children and their families when they need it most”. To find out more about Starlight Day or to become a volunteer, visit www.starlight.org.au or call 1300 727 827.

OCEAN Grove Toy Library has recently benefited from funds raised by the Rotary Club Sunday market. Rotary club President Rod Greer was on hand to present the proceeds. The Ocean Grove Toy Library has been operating for 20 years and currently has a borrowing base of 56 local families. We are a non-profit voluntary community group. The Toy Library is open on Tuesday 7.308.30pm and Saturday 10-11am. Members of the Ocean Grove Toy Library can borrow high quality play materials on a fortnightly basis so children are exposed to
a greater range of toys. We aim to provide toys which have an educational and physical developmental focus. Children often become tired of some toys so borrowing from the Toy Library resolves this, thus gathering less unwanted toys through purchase. Plus, less toys are also better for our environment. The annual membership fee is $50 or $40 concession. They also have a party pack that can be borrowed by TL members for $30which is particularly great when hosting a party as it includes a bouncy castle, outdoor games such as pin the tail on the donkey, noughts and crosses, stack and tosset, quoits
and ten pin bowling. “The Toy Library is proud of its community partners and we appreciate the ongoing support from the local Rotary Club,” said coordinator Jodi May-Gaffney. “We are really fortunate to have been the beneficiary of the OG Market gate- taking in January. As the Toy Library is self funded and we don’t receive any financial assistance from local or state govt we gratefully appreciate this financial support which will go towards purchasing new toys and replacing toys that are wearing out.”

Coastal pull for fashionista
STRUMPET opened its doors just before Christmas, in time for the holiday season. Owner Loretta Gabriel fell in love with the beautiful town and the warm and friendly people so when the opportunity came, she jumped at the chance to open a fashion store in Ocean Grove. Having always loved the area, and holidaying frequently since she was a teenager, Loretta and her family made the sea change last year. Assistant Manager, Tarryn Williams, has lived in Ocean Grove all her life. Loretta has nearly 20 years experience in wholesale fashion, specialising in swimwear. Owning her own fashion agency in South Yarra for many years, she has travelled the world from London to Singapore, Fiji and Hawaii, selling swimwear for some of Australia’s iconic swimwear brands. Strumpet therefore stocks
year round a large variety of swimwear (sizes 8 through to 20) including fashion brands such as Jets, Seafolly and Watersun as well as beautiful chlorine resistant styles from Ada. The store is one of only two Victorian stockists of the designer swimwear range Hotel Bondi. Loretta and Tarryn are swimwear fit specialists! Before her wholesale career in fashion began, Loretta worked as a fashion model, often booked for photo shoots, fashion parades and commercials working alongside local Ocean Grove yoga identity Louise Kenny. It was via modelling that Loretta eventually found herself working in wholesale fashion. Strumpet therefore also stocks aspirational clothing brands such as Indigo, Something Else, One Teaspoon and Lee Denim. A great range of ‘fast fashion’ is also available in sizes XS to XL. Loretta and Tarryn have
a passion and love for fashion and aim to provide each individual with a personal shopping experience. “We love to supply a stylist type service to our customers!” In amongst the fashion career, Loretta found time to complete a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in History and International Politics which eventually led her to undertake a Dip Ed in more recent years. This led to a challenging position teaching Year 11 and 12 History at MacRobertson Girls’ High School for a time. Loretta has also managed a commercial art gallery in Malvern where works by Australian greats such as Fred Williams, Brett Whiteley and Charles Blackmand were offered. After such diverse career paths fashion has always been her ‘backstop’ and ultimately her passion. This is the first time that Loretta has owned a retail store.
Exquisite jewellery including the art deco inspired House of Baulch range, hand painted Mexican pieces, authentic Russian Babushka dolls and Strumpet’s own range of all natural essential oil soaps are lovely gift ideas. Strumpet inspires the ‘hunter gatherer’ instinct as there is so much sensory stimulation. “We love to see customers, who might have had a busy week, come in and just listen to the lovely music, smell the soaps, and enjoy the exquisite jewellery and clothes. You can really see their relaxed enjoyment., said Lorretta.” Away from the store, Loretta loves going for a run or walk along Ocean Grove’s beautiful beach with her partner Damian and dog, going to yoga and enjoying the fantastic local restaurants. Strumpet has supported the community by sponsoring various events and looks forward to further engaging Lorretta Gabriel and Tarryn Williams at Strumpet. with the community.

An exotic looking lake dweller NATURE Watch this week is the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (photographed at Blue Waters Lake). Sulphur Crested Cockatoos are found in New Guinea, Northern and Eastern Australia, and Tasmania, but are not found in desert regions of Australia where their preferred food source is scarce. They have also adapted to urban areas and big cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. They have been introduced to Perth, Indonesia and also New Zealand. Sulphur Crested Cockatoos grow to 45-55 cms long. They have mainly white feathers (underwing feathers are yellow), with impressive yellow (sulphur) crest. They have a black beak and grey legs. The males have black eyes, whereas females have red -brown eyes. Sulphur Crested Cockatoos have a distinctive, raucous call when flying and when at rest.
They certainly let everything know that they are around! In captivity a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo can live for up to 80 years of age. In the wild they live up to 40 years of age (they are positively geriatric). Sulphur Crested Cockatoos eat berries, seeds, nuts and tree roots. They are experts at stripping branches and leaves off trees, and disposing of these on the ground, as a method of trimming their beak. They set up nests made up of woodchips in the hollows of old trees between August and January each year. Both parents help to incubate and rear the young cockatoos. The chicks remain with the parents once they have left the nest (family groups will stay together indefinitely). They remain in the same habitat all year around, so if you live around Blue Waters Lake, enjoy the raucous calls! Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Ocean Grove Spit – Landscape Masterplan Over recent months we have been publicising the preparation of our draft Landscape Masterplan for the Ocean Grove Spit that includes the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and the demolition of the 5 amenity blocks replacing with 4 blocks more strategically located and built to minimise the consumption of materials, energy and water The draft also proposed a new linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands. The Committee has reviewed the 23 submissions received (mainly from campers who would be impacted by the location of the trail). Consequently the Committee resolved to gain a fuller understanding of the impact of the proposed trail by commissioning additional work to to undertake a detailed survey of the proposed trail location to enable the impact on existing campers to be further assessed. Hodgson St Car Park We have also been promoting by way of a draft masterplan an upgrade of the car park at the bottom of Hodgson St Ocean Grove. This location being a very popular access point to the ocean beach being adjacent to the beach area where dogs are permitted under effective control and where picnic tables are provided for great views of the coast. The pedestrian cycling trail from Collendina thru to Barwon Heads along the coast also adjoins the car park. Other than valuable input from local neighbours, no other submissions were received and the Committee has resolved to lodge the plans with the Department of Sustainability & Environment for Coastal Management Act consent, prior to construction. Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove Another major project for Barwon Coast has been working on is the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. The existing building is to be demolished and replaced with a new facility on a smaller footprint using environmentally sustainable products and reduced energy inputs. Tenders for the project have now closed and are currently under review.
Storm damage The heavy rain on Sunday 7th March resulted in significant scouring out of beach access pathways, the Bluff walk and the sand terracing at the Ocean Grove Main beach. The most significant scouring was at Hodgson St Ocean Grove, where the surface water rushed down the hill, across the coastal reserve before cascading onto the beach resulting in substantial damage to the rock protected dune face next to the beach access stairs. Natural Resource Protection Our pest plants program for 2010 has commenced with the project areas for the first six months being the removal of the Acacia Cyclops, a naturalising western Australian wattle, in the Barwon Heads Bluff region and the ongoing task of removing Polygala also known as Myrtle-leaf milkwort (Bellarine Pea), a native of South Africa, from the Ocean Grove Spit. To assist with our coastal reserves management works we have engaged a Green Jobs Corp project ‘team’ funded through the Caring for our Country - Indigenous Community Connections. In partnership with the Bellarine Catchment Network and the City of Greater Geelong this project will engage with indigenous youth working on a range of tasks over the next 6 months. Disabled Surfers Association The Victorian Branch held a very successful event on 27th February at Ocean Grove Main Beach with volunteers able to support 85 participants to access the surf. The Premier and the Member for Bellarine acknowledged the significant benefit to our community of the DSA through the donation of 2 aquatic wheel chairs as replacements for those recently vandalised. We are delighted that the access ramp we funded and constructed off of the OG promenade enables persons of all abilities to reach the surf. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

Organiser Jeanette Roche said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed themselves. We raised lots of money for a good cause, especially as this is only the second year the event has run. We were very pleased with the support given and look forward to a big and better event next year. We’d also like to thank all our sponsors for their generous contributions.” Mark Hyland was MC. Skate fest hits the Grove bowl
Getting access to an ANZ Business Specialist is easy.
THE Ocean Grove round of the Bellarine Peninsula Skate Series was held under beautiful blue skies. With everyone shredding the bowl in warm up, you could tell it was going to be a great comp. We started up as usual with the Micro Minis, who all this week showed us just how much they all keep improving with some nice early grabs over the hip and in the deep end and one brave little micro jumping into the deep end. Next up was under 13’s which is my favorite comp to watch. All these little tackers going hard in the bowl and on the down ledge, with another massive Ollie into the deep end of the bowl and some nice kick-flips been done into the shallow end of the bowl and even a varial heel stomp.
With a little free skate it was into the the under 16’s who all skated really well, again using the whole park with some stylish grinds on the fly-out and some craziness in bowl such as another Ollie into the deep end!. After one more little free skate it was time for the last division of the day, the Open. All these guys came out killing it with massive airs everywhere in the bowl and long grinds in the deep end also a mention to Caccas olling out of the bank over two girls and rolling down the dirt and then taking a steamrolling from Singe.hahaha Another great comp with an awesome turn out hope to see you all at the next comp at Barwon Heads. The Green Room.

13th riders take on Golfies SURF comps can be fickle events, so weather dependent, combined with the timing of tides and swell. Having to set comp dates 6 to 12 months into the future is like gazing into a crystal ball You wait with fingers crossed and hope that “Huey” smiles down on you and everything comes together on the day! Well the conditions for the 13th Beach Boardriders second comp weren’t perfect, but they were a huge improvement on those thrown down for Comp 1. With a very low morning tide, the sun out, a light west-northwest breeze and a building swell the action got underway at “Golfies” on a sweet 2-3ft righthand rip bank. With the best comp waves on
offer in quite a while the surfing in all divisions from groms to Open A was hot. The stand out heat by far was the Open A final and with the tide pushing in, the wave size increasing and all the big guns giving it everything they had it was a fantastic spectacle. Huge take offs, exceptional tube riding, gouging turns and some big airs. Kyle Gilbert, Ben and Sim Collier, Josh JohnsonBaxter, Shawn Todd and Luke Edwards put on a show that had the gallery hooting and leaving the judges with headaches as to how to spilt the scores. Results were: Open A: 1. Josh Johnson-Baxter 2. Simon Collier 3. Ben Collier 4. Kyle Gilbert Open B: 1 Bart Johnson-Baxter 2. Lewie Speranza 3. Leigh

Sodas sparkle in Futsal final THE Bellarine Futsal League 20092010 season has been concluded in sensational fashion with Ocean Grove based futsal team, Sodas, defeating previously unbeaten pregame favourites, Ev’s Army by seven goals to two. After finishing the regular season in the runners up spot to their oppponents, Sodas produced the outstanding performance of the competition for the grand final. After taking an early lead, Sodas keeper Hayden Marshall kept the opposition at bay whilst Tom King, Staffan Hargreaves, Lewis & Troy McClelland and Daniel Earley counter attacked with speed and skill to put the game beyond doubt. The seven team competition saw a strong effort from local side Surfside Waves whose efforts to make the finals series came just too late to

THE highlight of the season has been the Ocean Grove number 3 side taking out the Bellarine District Ladies Bowls Association(BDLBA) Division 2 premiership on a beautiful sunny day at Torquay. The Grove girls were too strong for Leopold in a replay of the Qualifying final, winning 86 shots to 50 in a great team effort. Joan Duckett’s rink of Terri Toye, Audrey Gillespie and Mavis Chapman picked up a 7 early in the match and then went on with it to win by a massive 38 shots. In the next rink it was a close start but when
Lyn Haxby, Ellie Catania, Dot McLennan and Gwen Goldsmith hit their straps, they cruised to a 25 shot win. Our final rink didn’t fare quite so well, but pennant is a team game and they made sure that they didn’t give up or lose large numbers, well done to Dot Suttcliffe, Trish Bramwell, Bev Greelish and Adele Ryan on a great season. Our Ladies top side made it through to yet another Grand Final but unfortunately were outplayed on the day by an improved Queenscliff side. Once again the Ladies at Ocean
Grove have proved to be a real force in the BDLBA. Although Queenscliff won the Division one flag this year in a reversal of last season’s results, Ocean Grove Ladies top 2 sides finished the season as Runners Up and third in the same division. With our Division 2 girls taking out the flag, we will now have 3 sides in Division One. Congratulations on a wonderful season to all our girls.

Great spiking by Harrison Foott and Daniel Kuklych had their team easily winning 3 sets. Young players with heaps of energy and potential to help their team. Great passing in the team helped their team as well. Team Wave had a few problems with only 5 players so that put them on the back foot to start with. In the second set they made more of a come back to take 6 Pact to 20 points. Peter Caddy was doing some awesome
spiking and hitting with accuracy. Sam Wilson also did some great spikes from the back line as well and her serving helped her team win some points. Team Wave seemed to be having an off night with 2 of their taller players out of action which helps when they are blocking the spikers. Anyway, next week is another week and it will be interesting to see who changes position on the ladder. All teams are improving as the season progresses, and it will make for a great grand final. Great going teams.
the points. Both teams did some amazing recovery work from balls flying out of court to bring the ball back into play. Steven Thomas for 6 Pact did some amazing dives and recovered really quickly to get back into the game to win some points for his team. Merryn Thomas was on fire tonight to help back up her husband with some fantastic setting. Phantoms did some really good team work as well with Jon Collyer doing some awesome setting for his spikers and sister Lisa Krahe doing some sneaky drop shots that the other team weren’t expecting. It really made them think as to what was going to happen next, which is what the game is all about. Bandits vs Team Wave Bandits winning in 3 sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-14 Team Wave put up a good fight against Bandits. Team Wave had a few players away and it did have some impact on the team but they were able to enlist some players who had played before and that helped their team. Matt Trotter was back on the court after a long injury lay off and good to see that he hadn’t lost his touch. He did some awesome blocking on the net and even thought his

playing in our Community Challenge It fills up every year and people are always commenting on what a great time they have. During the games we see a lot of natural talent amongst the nonbowlers and we do try to recruit them, but they are usually too busy with cricket, tennis, surfing etc. At least this event gives them some exposure to our great game and maybe we’ll see them join up further down the track. Almost all bowlers you meet wish that they had taken the game up at a younger age. Peter Nixon.
arm isn’t quite back to hitting with power he did a pretty good job of spiking as well. Was good to see Debbie Davie back on the court too and she did a great job of setting for her team to help them along. Bandits of course had it all together even though at times having Matt blocking some of their spikes put them off they recovered really well. This team has played together for some time now and know exactly what each other is doing. It was especially great to see Anne Kuklych doing some setting for her team even though she is a specialist spiker, it did look funny seeing her in the setting position instead of hitting. Claire Jones was again on fire for Bandits with her fantastic job as setter, it makes such a difference if your setter can get to the ball to set it up for the hitters. A setter needs to be extremely fit as they do a lot of running all over the court. Well done Claire. Stingers vs Phantoms Devils Draw Stingers winning the first set 25-20 and Phantoms winning the second one 25-19, and 12-6 Phantoms way in the third set. No report for this game.

Junior club members of the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Little Athletics club who competed at the event were Thomas Henry and Isobel Gower. They both achieved outstanding results in their events with Isobel receiving two Gold Medals for her performances in the Under 14 Girls 800m and the U14 Girls 1500m. She overtook her competitors strongly in the last 100m to comfortably win both events.
Thomas Henry (pictured above) came third in the Boys U16 High Jump on Friday, jumping 1.88m. He also came third in the boys U16 Triple Jump, jumping an impressive 12.90m. Thomas brought home two bronze medals from the event. Other club members who also competed at the event were Sean and Kelsey Marshman, with Sean gaining a selection in Hamish and Andy’s 4x400m celebrity relay race. Also Ricci
and Holly Curtis competed in the 2000m steeplechase. During their event, Holly fell on the water jump, her twin sister Ricci helped her up and both girls continued in the race with Holly finishing 3rd and Ricci in 4th place. Well done to these talented young athletes. The Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Little Athletics Club is extremely proud of your results and your selection into such an important athletics event.
YOUNG local athletes recently took part in the Geelong Little Athletics Championships at Landy Field. Children from the Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads Little Athletics Club competed in events of their choice against a few hundred children from other Little Athletics clubs from across the Geelong Region. The athletes were able to choose to compete in a combination of five track and field events on the day. Events included 70m and 100m sprints, 400m or 800m run, hurdles, 1500m walk, long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put or javelin. The day gave all children the opportunity to strive for their best and to work towards achieving ‘personal bests’ (PBs) in their favourite events. The day was very successful for our club, with many children achieving “Personal Bests” (PBs) in their events and also a large number of children coming away with first, second
or third medals for their performances in individual events. All of the children from the Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads Little Athletics club are to be commended for their positive attitude and great sportsmanship throughout the Athletics season this year. Likewise, their parents are to be commended for helping with voluntary duty on Saturdays and for getting involved in little athletics with their children. In all little athletics events, the emphasis is on fun, participation, performance and improving technique. Little Athletics promotes the motto of “Be your Best”, and our club is always very proud of all of its members who have certainly achieved this throughout the 2010 season. The club presenttaions will be held on Friday the 26th of March at the club rooms in Barwon Heads at 5pm. The presentations will be followed with a family BBQ.

PREMIERS COLLENDINA Cobras claimed their first A Grade premiership at the weekend, fittingly as the club celebrates its 20th year. “I’m just rapt,” said club stalwart Leigh Norquay after seeing his son Kade captain the side to an unexpectedly comfortable win on Sunday. Cobras set the pace on the first day racking up 237 for 9, thanks in particular to a 67 from Ewan Handley, a 64 from Ben Riccardo and a 32 from Nathan Walter (not out). On the second day it was down to the bowlers. Cobras firepower in that area has been unsurpassed all year and the grand final was no different - Luke Veitenheimer 5/34 and Michael Fabris 3/28. Fortunately the club has recently extended it’s clubrooms and will now have space to fly its first A Grade flag.

grubbers finals Ocean Grove Bellarine Cricket League B Grade 2010 Premiers Ocean Grove dominated B Grade throughout the season so it was fitting that their grand final victory was swift and decisive. After the game captain Peter Hart was glowing about his teammates about 30 played for the side during the season. He praised the way they went about their work, the calibre of people involved and the new players that had come into the side. Grove, chasing Queenscliff’s 153, met that target in the early afternoon simply for the loss of three wickets. On day one Patrick Kuipers 4/34 and Marcus Wirth 3/40 sent the Coutas back to the dressing room while Tony Laverty did most of the batting damage (61). Peter Hart (29no) and Dean Gills (20) also pitched in.

A valiant C Grade side also made it to the grand final after a good season. Unfortunately for Grubbers, Barwon Heads’ met their target with only the loss of seven wickets despite Darren Craig’s 23 and good fielding from Aaron Hapgood (2 catches) and Dean Harty (4/23) and Alan Bate’s bowling (2/14).

Sunday’s final practice game against Strathmore revealed a lot of new faces as well as younger players that have come up through the junior ranks.
Young Grubs ready to hit the road OCEAN Grove put the finishing touches on its pre-season with a solid hit out against Strathmore in a practice match at Collendina Recreation Reserve on Sunday. The Grubbers, who face BFL reigning premier Drysdale in Round 1, won 12.8.80 to Strathmores 8.10.58 in the seniors. Three matches were played on the day with Grubbers winning in the seniors Under 18s while Strathmore, under the guidance of Ex-AFL Carlton player Digby Morrell, easily accounted for Ocean Grove in the Reserves. Morrell is the playing coach of Strathmore seniors. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor remained philosophical after the match
despite the win and said the focus would now turn to the BFL season opener against Drysdale on April 3. “Everyone is excited for Round 1 no matter who you are playing,” McGregor said after the game. I think it is a good opportunity for us to take on them (Drysdale) in Round 1 when it is fresh for both sides. “Ideally both sides have got no injuries and we have (our) best side on paper.” Both teams made plenty of rotational changes throughout
the course of the game. The Grubbers new recruits including key position player Bernie Lynch, Ruckman Matt Guthrie and on-baller Rohan O’Callaghan all got valuable match time. Ocean Grove trailed at threequarter time by five points before slamming on five goals in the final term to seal victory. Sundays game was also played in memory of Ocean Grove identity Anthony Red Trevean, who was tragically killed in motor sport accident in April 2006, aged 41. Trevean originated from Strathmore and moved to Ocean Grove with his young family in the mid 1990s and developed a strong presence within the community.
Strathmore, who won a collated points system across the three matches, claimed the inaugural The Red Challenge in honour of Anthony Trevean thanks to its comprehensive win in the Reserves. When we heard Strathmore and Ocean Grove were having a game today, we thought we’d strike a deal by having a trophy (in of honour of Red), Ocean Grove Football Club treasurer Ken Digby said. Hopefully it will become a memorial and perpetual in the future. The Grubbers meet Drysdale in Round One on April 3 at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve. Game starts at 2pm.
Coach Cam McGregor chats to his side at three quarter time.
