Government hinges on us CORANGAMITE and Australian politics both hung in the balance as the Voice went to press on Monday. The people’s answer from the Grove across to Queenscliff and out to Colac and up to Linton was a resounding – difference of opinion. Grove voters now look to have the casting vote on the national scene. Corangamite and a handful of seats will decide whether and by how

much the Greens and Independents will call the shots. As polling began on a sunny morning in Ocean Grove – weather said to favour the incumbent party – streams of early voters turned up at the Surfside Centre, Surfside Primary and Ocean Grove Primary to do their bit. Now they’ll know every vote really will count. Continued page 2.

Firefighter Adam Wakeling surveys the aftermath of an electical board fire at a Crane Street home.

OCEAN Grove firefighters have sent out a warning to home owners and tenants after tackling two house fires in a fortnight. In particular the warning applies to getting professionals to check fuses and electrical boxes. In one incident in Crane Street on the 16th a family was forced to flee their home as fire took hold of a fuse box. Resident Simon Willert was forced to grab his sleeping daughter and carry her out of the house after the switchboard began sparking and caught fire. Continued page 3

Grove goes to the polls IT may take a week before the outcome of Corangamite’s vote becomes certain. Currently thousand postal votes are yet to be counted and a real close call is always likely to trigger a recount. About 3,000 voters lodged their choices at the Surfside Centre on Saturday. The venue was busy from early on until a couple of hours before the 6pm deadline. At 5.45 party workers started taking down their signage and the leaflets

were carried back to their cars for pulping. One last man in his 20s came through just as the doors were locked. By then officials had already disassembled half of the cardboard purple polling booths. It took about 50 minutes to tidy up, count the unused papers and get ready to tip the first ballot box across the empty counting tables. And then the counting began. And they’re still counting now.

The Greens could be calling the tune, Jill Meehan kept the party people entertained outside Ocean Grove Primary.

Get expert electrical checks RESIDENT Simon Willert was forced to grab his sleeping daughter and carry her out of the house after their home switchboard began sparking and caught fire. Firefighter Adam Wakeling offered residents a timely message regarding all electrical applicances. “If you are a home owner and you are not sure of it, just get it checked (by an electrician).” He explained that when they arrived on the scene they could only see a little smoke from the

outside but when they opened the door, flames were already coming down the passageway. Two firefighters tackled the fire wearing breathing apparatus and had it under control in ten minutes. However, firefighter Wakeling said that it was lucky the house was occupied when the problem started. “The house would have been fully involved by the time anyone noticed,’ he said. Mr Willert who was in the house with his wife and three children

was full of praise for the fire crews. “The firefighters were here within minutes, very helpful, concerned about the family, I can’t say enough about their work. They were terrific. “My daughter was asleep right on the other side of the wall where the fire started. Her bed is pretty much right against that wall. I just grabbed her and ran.” Grove firefighters also dealt with a structure fire in Emperor Drive this month.

Five year wait on ‘Parks’ estate

Resident Gary Norris has been battling to get promised trees planted in the Parks Estate.

Trees please THE Ocean Grove Parks Estate is still devoid of street plants almost five years after the beautification was initially promised. Resident Gary Norris has been in correspondence with Geelong City Council since January 2006 trying to rectify the situation. “I’ve sent 12 letters and only had two written responses,” he said. Drought conditions, schedule delays and conflict over planting responsibility have been excuses as to the lack of inaction. City of Greater Geelong Manager of Parks and Support Services Brendan Gaudion said that the developer was responsible for the planting of street trees, a condition of approval for the estate development. “Following negotiations, the developer has agreed for council to plant street trees in Parks Estate, with the cost to be covered by the developer,” Mr Gaudion said.

“Council officers will start planting the street trees in September, subject to council receiving payment from the developer.” Gary said that he wouldn’t be convinced until he sees the trees in the ground “As I understand it, when we buy a block of land, a certain amount is set aside by the developer and given to the council for treeing and beautification,” he said. “I want to know where (the money) has been for six years.” Driving around the estate, it’s easy to spot the bareness of the streets as opposed to the neighbouring Kingston estate which has its street planting stages up to date.

PANEL SERVICE

KEEPING YOU ON THE ROAD

Gary pointed out the irony of the name of the area. “The funny part is that they call it the Parks estate so if you were visiting you’d be imagining parks and trees,” he said. “The Parks, it implies it’s treed and green.” Despite repeated attempts, the Voice was unable to get comment or clarification from the developer before going to press on Sunday. MEANWHILE residents in Kingston Estate are on their way to having their lake front view. In a follow up to an article published in The Voice last year (Drought Blame for Lake Delay December 16 2009) the beautification and planting around the Kingston lake is 70% complete. Unfortunately the Voice also understands that that there has been a spate of plant thefts. Planting is due to be completed by the second week of September.

Chicken John’s 20 yrs AN Ocean Grove icon has celebrated its 20th birthday, writes Carly Helweg. The Piping Hot Chicken Shop celebrated the double decade milestone on August 13. Owner John Bowman (aka Captain Chook) said that the past 20 years have been a roller coaster ride. “Some blokes have their shed, I have my chicken shop,” he said. The iconic store has evolved from a single shop selling basic takeaway food to a fully licensed local venue, offering all day food, coffee and live music. “The menu is simple, inexpensive and popular,” John said. “The girls run the shop like clockwork and I tend to get in the way a bit.” The shop is now a successful live music venue hosting amateur and professional gigs after a local musician, suggested the idea. “We introduced live music to the shop three years ago and it has been hugely popular, I spend most of my time thinking about the music instead of the core business,” he said. The live music will halt for September whilst John takes some much deserved long service leave but will be back with plenty of new acts in October. “I am about to turn 60 and have to think of an exit strategy but I can’t let go if the music is going

to stop,” he said. Reviewing the last twenty years, John said Ocean Grove’s shopping habits have changed with the introduction of 24 hour trading. “People used to walk up and down the strip from the grocer, newsagent, butcher, bakery, chemist and chicken shop, now most of the shopping is done in the supermarket,” he said. “Mum and dad shops are just about history.”

As for the future of the Chicken Shop, John said he wants to increase his use of local produce as well as free range products. “We try to be environmentally responsible by buying chemical free chickens, free range Moolap eggs, Bellarine wines, organic coffee and non genetically modified canola cooking oil,” he said. Slowing down in the shop doesn’t mean slowing down for John though as he is

busy organising music acts, participating in local initiatives including campaigning for a permanent arts hub and community garden, running local arts festivals and spending time with his family. “We should be a mum and dad shop but mum and dad are slowing down and jump at the opportunity to look after our seven grand-children.”

Event raises $5,000 A MS fundraiser pulled in more than $5,000 when it was held at a Grove venue earlier this month. The second open music and auction night at Bardeli easily surpassed the $3,000 made in the first year, thanks to local musicians giving their time and the generous donations of local businesses and bidders. More than a dozen bands and solo artists performed on the night. Organiser Bree-Arne Chamley thanked those that contributed, especially the business, Kerri at Bardeli for staging the event and MC Kevin Downley. Bree-Arne who played two sets at the show said: “I had so much fun, it was heaps better than last year’s. It was a bigger turnout.” The event began at 4pm and went through until 1am. The aim of the event is to raise funds and awareness for those affected by Multiple Sclerosis.

VIP NIGHTS FOR YOUR FUNDRAISING INVOLVED: Grove resident and Bay FM presenter Mark Hyland is either running the line for junior soccer matches, surfing or MCing fundraisers.

“I WONDER what our friends in Melbourne are doing?” I often ask that question when the family’s at Ocean Grove beach on a hot summer day! My friends in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne where my wife and I grew up are jealous. I started breakfast radio on K-ROCK in Geelong in 1996 and commuted from Melbourne for 18 months until my wife and I and three young kids moved to Ocean Grove on Australia Day 1998. I moved to BayFM seven years later and am still on air there. For me, Ocean Grove means ‘community’. When I see things like the CFA crew shaking tins, surf life savers, festivals or carols organised by volunteers, it makes me feel proud to live here. I often help at fundraisers MCing or being auctioneer at the annual Good Friday Appeal Auction at The Mex. The Good Friday Appeal at the

Mex won’t be the same after the passing of Ocean Grove CFA Captain Bob Smith. Every Good Friday eve at The Mex he was buying stuff he probably didn’t need, to help others. My thoughts are with all at OG CFA. Bob was a part of this community that can never be replaced. The new pool, which my daughter enjoys over summer holidays, and the proposed new sporting precinct near the Surfside Centre are very exciting for the town. My boys started playing indoor soccer Saturday morning at the Surfside Centre 11 years ago and the youngest is now goalie for the Waves 2nds. Thanks Brian and Peter for starting soccer in Ocean Grove! Sporting clubs in towns like Ocean Grove breed that sense of community. Which leads me to Ocean Grove Cricket Club. I love my cricket. Not bragging, but that D

Grade Player of The Year trophy looks mighty fine on the mantle piece. Well, it would if I was allowed to put it there. A highlight for me and another demonstration of community spirit and camaraderie of a sporting club, was watching my boys play junior cricket. The day they batted together in u/17s and made about 5 in 20 overs to stop Collendina winning outright was priceless. They had a ball. The team finished bottom, but “Mr. Cricket” Craig D’Arcy made sure they enjoyed themselves and they made great friends. There’s that feeling of community again. Another important part of the community is this paper. Everyone seems to read it and comment about who they’ve seen. It’s great for the town. I hope it continues reporting on the community for years to come. My favorite thing about Ocean Grove is the beach and the

weekend early surf. Sure the water gives you an ice-cream headache this time of year, but when Mick rings me and Steve at 5pm every Friday, the anticipation builds and we meet with a few of the regulars at stupid o’clock for the Saturday surf. As we paddle out at Ocean Grove at sunrise, it’s serene and idyllic. The sky turns a bright orange, a couple of seagulls skim low over the water, the smell of bacon and eggs wafts across from The Dunes. Then, whack! The sleep is washed out of my eyes by an icy blast of Southern Ocean swell. After a solid fight through a few sets, I sit on my board panting and starting to feel a bit warmer. Mick’s up and riding on the first wave of the day…as usual, and I watch the sun rise over the Point Lonsdale lighthouse. It doesn’t get any better than this. Hmm, I wonder what our friends in Melbourne are doing?

Pupils go casual for animal shelter OCEAN Grove Primary School is the first in line to raise money for the region’s sick and injured animals, writes Carly Helweg. The Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is running their first annual fundraiser to help expand the shelter and clinic at their Moolap site. Ocean Grove Primary School will hold a casual dress day on Friday September 3 with participating students donating a gold coin. GAWS employee Nadine

Williams said that as a not for profit organisation they have to rely on fundraisers and their op shop to be able to grow. “We rely on the community to help us get by and we don’t often ask for help,” she said. Nadine is encouraging other schools or businesses to get involved in the project with any donation appreciated. “Everything counts, it’s just gold coins,” she said. GAWS has provided shelter and health services for pets and

stray animals in the Geelong, Surfcoast and Bellarine areas for over 50 years. Although $1million is needed, Nadine said this year they are aiming to raise $10,000. “We’re hoping it will grow as we want to raise as much as possible, we have a big wish list as it is,” she said. The money will go towards having a vet permanently on site and being able to provide cheap desexing and consultation.

Students earn praise

Kedar Abhyankar and Kate Preston with Lions Club president Brenda Walter.

A GROUP of high school students won high acclaim for their presentations at a recent Lions Club Youth of the Year Quest event. The students, Kate Preston and Cassandra Orcsik of Bellarine Secondary College and Camden Tilley and Kedar Abhyankar of Geelong Grammar School gave their presentations at the Ocean Grove Barwon

Heads Lions Club Final at Moorfield Park. As part of the judging, each of the students was interviewed and then gave a demonstration of public speaking. Overall awards were given to Kedar for public speaking, he spoke on the subject of internet censorship, while Kate was nominated the overall winner. Kate gave a

talk on how people tend to make judgments of others. Quest, which is sponsored by the NAB, aims to encourage student interest in leadership and taking an active part in community affairs. The winner of the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads final will progress to the zone final next February.

Tint Master The Five Star Energy Efficiency program for houses in Victoria concentrates on insulating the building to keep heat in the house in winter. In summer we want to keep our house cool, but the rating scheme omits the most important factor - the sun’s radiant energy. The sun’s heating rays, just like light rays, travel straight through glass including through double glazing. This results in the largest heat gain for the house in summer. One way to moderate it is to shut blinds and curtains - which delays the sun’s effects - but darkens your room and

stops you seeing out. Another way is to install external blinds to shade the windows, but these are expensive, are easily damaged by the weather and still spoil your view out. This is where TintMaster comes in. Its amazing new Ultra Solar Control window film, applied to the interior of the glass, blocks the ultra-violet energy and most of the infra-red energy which causes the heating effect but it lets in the light and lets you see out clearly. It is the best way to get maximum energy efficiency in summer - and to reduce your airconditioning use and electricity bills. And it still has all the other benefits of solar window film - reduces fading of your valuable furnishings, reduces the reflections on your TV screen, adds to your privacy, holds the glass together if you get a broken window and helps to keep your radiant heat in the house in

winter. The best time to take action is now before the summer heat comes. Call TintMaster on 52218877 or call in at 9 Gordon Ave, Geelong to make it happen. The award-winning team at Duncan Pascoe Builders take great pride in their work and you can be assured of an enjoyable building process and a finish

In keeping with the push for greener homes that consume less energy, Rylock’s new Generation Three (G3) window and door range boasts a lot of new features, not the least of which is a SIX STAR Energy Rating. Originally the first to offer the best in energy efficiency with their now market leading double glazed windows at an affordable price, the new window and door range is offered in a greatly expanded range of double glazed opening types, all of which offer even larger sizes than have previously been available. Rylock’s Murray Riccardi said that they can now virtually manufacture a window to what the Customer, Architect or Building Designer wants to use to compliment or enhance the overall design. The new G3 Thermally improved suite boasts all the existing Rylock features that have made it so sought after by discerning homebuilders. Things like the extensive use of stainless steel fixings and operating mechanisms, mitre cut

frames, superior weatherseals and superior latches, catches and locks. Murray said that their new Bi-Fold doors incorporate three point locking and were so well designed that they can be used in the most exposed locations along our notorious, often wild and windy, Westcoast. The Bi-Fold doors offer a great alternative to the classic Sliding Door, fully opening to provide clear access from a room to an outdoor living area up to six metres wide. They can also be manufactured as a kitchen window, providing the perfect servery for outside dining. Another innovation is the “in line frame” which means the over reveal and outer frame dimensions are the same or parallel, making framing setup and installation simpler in the multitude of external cladding used today. Twenty five years ago over ninety percent of homes were traditional brick veneer, but these days the exterior can be almost anything, even the straw used by one of the three little pigs in the nursery rhym. “As well as keeping up with customer orders, we are making the time to progressively replace our existing showroom windows and doors with the new G3 products. Although we almost need a bigger showroom to display the full range

of products in the new range, the showroom which adjoins the factory is progressing nicely, with the new G3 range on show constantly expanding. “ Murray said. Rylock are located a stone’s throw from the Ford factory on Melbourne Road at 61 – 63 Morgan Street, North Geelong, and can be phoned on 5278 871 or from out of town for free on 1800 066 628. Their website is in the process of being updated to the new G3 range, but there is still plenty to see at www.rylockwindowsgeelong.

Zepp’ rock the shop I WAS very excited about the much anticipated arrival of our local heavy rock act, Shed Zeppelin, and was told that most of the members originated from Ocean Grove, bar a couple of the group who hailed from Melbourne. I had heard great things about the band, notably the lead guitarist James, who pulled off Page’s slick riffs and astonishing sound with a bucketfull of style and vigour. He even replicated Jimmy’s incredible famous Cello bow performance during Dazed and Confused! The drummer, Chris, took on Bonzo’s difficult role with accomplished technicality, thrashing out Bonham’s solo pieces as if his life depended on it. He stuck to the sound and feel of the original Zeppelin master and proved worthy of his place in the band. The bass player was superb, as was the rhythm guitarist who filled in nicely to the overall sound of the group. Simeau performed well in the role of Plant, who had similar stage style with the open shirt and golden locks flicked occasionally during his performance. He was assisted by Roz Crook, a powerful background singer with a higher range of vocals than

the lead singer. His voice faded towards the end of the last few tracks but he managed to keep the audience entertained throughout the show, notably the blond dancers on the shop floor. I particularly enjoyed the few brief appearances of Justin on harmonica, using Page’s trademark feedback technique on the speakers to give a raw edge to his sound. The keyboardist, Sally also filled in to give the band its edge and complete the overall sound of the band. The band played a few of my favourites, such as Black Dog, Rock and Roll, The Song Remains the Same and Misty Mountain Hop. They also bashed out a few classics such as Whole Lotta Love, Good Times Bad Times, Immigrant Song and Stairway to Heaven. The best song for me on the night was Kashmir, which had the grungy power of the original and kept me enthralled during the show! Don’t go too far Shed Zeppelin, you are worthy of a rightful place in the Piping Hot Chicken Shop hall of fame! By Shaun Mitten.

Rustys set for festival LOCAL band The Rustys have been announced in the initial line up for the Queenscliff Music Festival. The local band recently travelled to London to represent Australia in the Global Battle of the Bands competition. Lead singer Matt Blach said they were excited to play on a stage at the festival. “We’re pretty stoked,” he said “Last year we couldn’t play because we had to be up in Sydney for the Battle of the Bands and we would’ve just been busking

but it’s good this year we’re in a tent.” The band has been busy busking and performing local gigs to showcase their new songs. “We’ve got four or five new songs that we played at the potato shed a couple of weeks ago,” he said. Held on the last weekend in November, the Queenscliff Music Festival attracts local, national and international music acts. This is the first time The Rustys will be performing at the festival.

environment

Stowaway from the ‘Isabella’ BEES are flying insects that are closely related to wasps and ants. Bees are important members of the food chain in that they have a role in pollination, which is the process where pollen produced by one plant is transferred to another plant. This enables plant fertilization and reproduction. Bees are also responsible for producing honey and beeswax. Honey Bees feed on nectar and pollen from plants. They have a long tongue which enables them to reach the nectar within flowers. There are 20,000 species of bees known worldwide, and they are found on every continent except for Antarctica. There are approximately 1,500 species of bee that are native to Australia. The honey bee was actually introduced by early settlers to Australia, from Europe, in about 1822. They were brought out on board a ship called 'The Isabella'. They were introduced so that honey could be produced in Australia. People have enjoyed honey for about 4000 years, when it was discovered as a delicacy in the ancient Egyptian times. People who manage colonies of bees for the production of honey are known as 'apiarists'. Bees combine together in a colony to construct a beehive, made up of cells collectively known as combs (honeycombs). Each wax cell in the

comb has six sides and all cells have a slight backward tilt so that the honey will not spill out-ingenious! There are an average of 140 wax cells for each one centimetre in thickness, and each cell fits snugly against its neighbour on all sides. Bees are obviously very good at geometry and measuring shapes! A colony generally contains one Queen Bee, who is the fertile female member of the colony (I think we've all known a few Queen Bees in our time). There are up to a few thousand fertile males called drones. Also in the colony is a variable population of sterile female 'worker' bees. The worker bees produce and shape the cells within the honeycomb. The Queen lays the eggs within the honeycombs. If the eggs are fertilized, females are produced, and if the eggs are not fertilized, male drones are produced. The larvae are fed with a substance known as 'Royal Jelly' which is produced by the worker bees. As they develop, the bees feed on pollen and honey. Honey is produced from the pollen and nectar collected from plants. Worker bees have stings which they use to protect their colony from 'invaders'. The sting is associated with a venom sac. Once the sting has lodged in the victim, the bee literally is broken in

A bee at work in an Ocean Grove garden.

two parts as the stinger is torn from it's body, and the bee subsequently dies. Anyone who has been stung by a bee can testify that the venom indeed causes a great deal of pain! Similar to ants, bees also produce a chemical known as a 'pheromone' in response

to attack, so that other worker bees can rally to protect the colony. In 2007, populations of honeybees experienced substantial decline. It is thought that the use of pesticides and the reduction in wild flower habitats lead to the decline of bee

populations. Here is yet another reason for people to think about the destruction they cause to the world and how nature suffers from our selfishness and carelessness. Cheers honey Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. A Coastcare Group for Ocean Grove Barwon Coast is working in partnership with the Department of Sustainability and Environment's (DSE) Coast Action/Coastcare Facilitator and the Ocean Grove community to form an Ocean Grove Coastcare group that will be the first Coastcare group for the Bellarine Peninsula. Coast Action/Coastcare proudly supports thousands of community volunteer groups working to protect and enhance Victoria's 2000 kilometres of coastline. Local groups help to maintain our marine and coastal environment, through activities such as revegetating coastal areas, fencing, monitoring and research of our flora and fauna and coastal processes, presenting education and awareness raising sessions, plantings, landscaping coastal areas and protecting cultural sites. The first ever Ocean Grove Coastcare event was held on Thursday 5th August and saw Ocean Grover’s and interested persons from all around the Bellarine Peninsula braving the weather to attend a movie night at our unofficial town hall - the Chicken Shop The film ‘Message in the Waves’ proved a fitting choice, as it poignantly addressed a broad range of coastal and environmental issues including ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’, the impacts of ever increasing plastic marine debris and the classic mind frame - ‘think global, act local’. The beautifully executed film, with its inherent coastal themes and issues, was an excellent way to bring people together and generate interest in the new Coastcare group . Providing ample “food for thought”, the film also prompted discussion from the diverse audience about what can be done locally.

The evening, organised by locals Jackie Scally from Deakin University, Cate Barham from the Gordon Tafe, Maddie Glynn from Barwon Coast, and Jo Ludbrook – DSE Coastcare facilitator was a great success from all accounts. With 50 people of all different ages and interest groups crammed tightly and comfortably into the Chicken Shop and the film helped to inspire and encourage 35 members of the community to sign up and join the new group. There is opportunity for this new and exciting group to assist existing voluntary groups in Ocean Grove to work in partnership to strengthen and enhance new and exciting projects along our coastline. The group will also work in partnership with Barwon Coast and DSE with an aim to conserving, enhancing and promoting biodiversity values, educating and creating awareness and understanding of coastal issues to the broader community accessing and utilising the Ocean Grove foreshore environment through a broad range of project ideas that will be developed by the group. You may not necessarily be 'green minded' but that's ok as the group will also need people with other skills such as information technology, graphic design, media, financial, governance, leadership, mentoring, cultural heritage and much more so get involved with the Ocean Grove Coastcare group - its a great way to get families and friends to explore and learn, and contribute to the sustainability of our coastal environment. The future looks bright for the Ocean Grove Coastcare group and to find out more about the the group contact either Jo Ludbrook, DSE on 5226 4667 or Maddie Glynn, Barwon Coast on 5254 1118 Ocean Grove Main Beach Amenity Block - Update Our largest ever self funded construction project being the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block is well underway. Works completed to date include all subsurface plumbing and drainage works, pouring of the concrete slab, the timber framing, and erection of the galvanised poles to support the roof, whilst work has recently commenced on the placing of roofing material and the laying of the blockwork. Join your local track and field team The Athletics Track & Field season is starting up again shortly and to get things underway Bellarine Athletics is conducting a Coaching Clinic on Sunday September 19th at Landy Field between 1pm – 3pm. The Clinic if free and anyone 12 years old and over is welcome to come along. Bellarine Athletics is very proud of Nathan Deakes who held the World Record for the 50k Race Walk. Nathan is still a loyal member of our Club and of Sam McIntosh who holds the Australian/Oceanic T52 wheelchair records for the 100m, 200m & 400m. We are also proud of our up and coming juniors such as Pole Vaulter Keith Wrzuszczak and High Jumper Thomas Henry. However, please do not make the mistake of thinking that our Club and athletics in Geelong are only interested in the elite athletes. We are just as proud to have many members who use athletics as the basis to improve their performances in other sports as well as the members who are just there for some fun & fitness and social interaction. We have members of all abilities ranging from Under 14 to 60-plus. Bellarine is one of 5 clubs competing under the umbrella of Geelong Athletics at Landy Field on Saturday afternoons during October – March. Events conducted are sprints, middle distance, long distance, race walking, hurdles, steeple, shot put, discus, javelin, hammer, high jump, triple jump, long jump, pole vault & relays. Alice taking success in her stride Sports briefs OCEAN Grove rising star netballer Alice Teague-Neeld is taking her latest national achievement all in her stride, writes Mark Heenan. The modest 14-year-old won selection in the Australian Under 16 netball team after a brilliant performance at the School Sport Australia 15 & Under Championships in Toowoomba earlier this month for Victoria. Perhaps Alice’s biggest accolade was her naming as the Victorian recipient of the Amy Safe Award at the Championships. Amy Gillett (married name) was an Australian track cyclist who represented Australia, she died in a training accident near Zeulenroda, Germany in 2005 when a motorist crashed into the Australian squad of cyclists she was training with. For the record, Alice shot 26 of Victoria’s 30 goals, although the Vics lost the Grand Final to Queensland 44 to 30. Alice who stands at 178cm plays either Goal Shooter or Goal Attack, feels humbled by her Australian representative honour. “I was hoping that I would get in (The Australian side) although I was kind of surprised,” TeagueNeeld said. “I started locally at Surfside and then just started playing Under 11’s with Ocean Grove. “I then made a representative

Alice Teague-Neeld.

team with the Bellarine (region), and then in Grade six I made the Victorian team and then school teams followed.” “Alice is very modest – she won the best and fairest award for Victoria in Toowoomba (this month),” her mother Sarah described. The Year eight Sacred Heart College student has made her mark at a local level after winning a spot on the Ocean Grove B-Grade netball team. In her debut match for B-Grade the Ocean Grove local shot 31 of the 57 goals and was named in the

best. Alice’s impressive list of credits does not stop there, on the weekend the talented teenager won the prestigious Bellarine and District Netball Association (B&DNA) junior netballer of the year award. Sport runs through the TeagueNeeld family blood, older sisters Molly and Lucy play in Ocean Grove’s A-Grade team and are members of the Geelong Flyers netball team. Mother Sarah is a keen netballer and an avid follower of the sport. Sarah has coached, scored and played at a local level with Surfside and continues to travel countless miles to support her daughters in their chosen field. “My involvement in terms of the girls (my daughters) is huge – driving them everywhere during the week because (Lucy and Molly) play for the Geelong Flyers,” Sarah said. Alice, who plays basketball with the Bellarine Storm, is the daughter of former Ocean Grove premiership winning coach and current Collingwood AFL assistant midfield coach Mark Neeld. Neeld, who played 74 AFL games with Geelong and Richmond, has also been shortlisted as a candidate for the vacant Port Adelaide AFL coaching position.

Lady with lift AGE is no barrier when it comes to Ocean Grove local Elaine Janes. Next month, the vibrant 65-year-old will compete in the World Masters Weightlifting Championships in Poland. Elaine is no stranger to international competition having competed at the World Masters Games in Sydney last year and the World Masters Weightlifting Championships in Greece 2008. “That is my motto is “you are never too late to start and you are never too old to give something a go’,” Elaine recalls. Elaine, who moved from Geelong to Ocean Grove 18 years ago, has won gold at the Australian Masters Games in Darwin, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Launceston in the past six years. What makes Elaine’s story so fascinating is she is not exactly a veteran weightlifter, she only took up the sport eight years ago. “I was promoting the sport of Bocce at Eastern Gardens (in Geelong) at an Active Australia day function,” she said. “We had an allocated spot next door to where Bocce was and there were two guys with bars and weights and they had no signage. “So I stepped over there and said ‘Good Morning’ and introduced myself and said ‘What are you doing’? “And they said ‘We are a weightlifting club – Geelong Weightlifting club’ and here pick up this bar’. “So I kept popping back there every 15 minutes and was having a

Cobras arrive back from Aireys Inlet COLLENDINA Cricket Club has returned from their pre-season training camp in Aireys Inlet. The Cobras departed Ocean Grove on Saturday and ventured down the Great Ocean Road and returned from Aireys Inlet on Sunday. Collendina coach Eddie Ellwood said the twoday camp was a great opportunity for players to connect as a group prior to the new season that starts in October. “We did some work on the beach, and it was a good chance for the players to bond ahead of the new season,” Ellwood said. In other news, the Cobras commenced their preseason earlier this month with the club currently conducting two sessions a week. The Cobras will continue to train on Sundays at 10:30am at Collendina Reserve, while for the next two Thursdays indoor training sessions will take place at the Ocean Grove Primary School. Training starts at 6:30pm at the Ocean Grove Primary School gym. “It has been more fitness based with beep test and shuttle runs with indoor sessions at the Ocean Grove Primary School,” Ellwood said.

go and I got talked into coming to the club.” Even in her mid-sixties Elaine is showing no signs of slowing down, the enthused local plans to compete at the Weightlifting Masters Games at Vancouver in Canada next year and two years later in the Italian city of Torino in 2013. Elaine, a self-confessed fitness fanatic who can bench press 42.5 kilograms, trains four days a week at a weightlifting club tin shed facility in Moolap. She also participates in one yoga session a week in Ocean Grove and regularly walks along the beach once a week in Point Lonsdale. Elaine also works at The Ocean View Health Club one day a week on Sundays. Ocean View Health Club owner Mark Rapa says Elaine’s motivation

to succeed is a great inspiration to locals. Rapa, President of the Surfside Waves Soccer Club, is the brainchild of organising a fundraiser to help fund Elaine’s travel and accommodation expenses towards next month’s Weightlifting Championships. “Elaine is a classic example of what someone can do at any age. There should be no restrictions of what we want to achieve regardless of age, gender and size,” Rapa said. “It is a challenge and a goal and it gives me a purpose in life,” Elaine said. Cobras earn their grand final spot Cobras Under 14 Division 3 side has earned themselves a grand final against North Geelong at Lara this weekend.

Cobras Under 14 (1)Round 16 vs Torquay We finished the home and away season as minor premiers and stretched our unbeaten run to 12 games after a comprehensive victory over Torquay 19 12 126 to 0 1 1. It was a good to welcome back Zac Ramsay and Nick Anastassiou after school commitments and both boys played very well. The forward line functioned well with Miles Henderson prominent with his workrate a feature. The defence handled things well with Torquay's attack repelled by Jack Ness, Harry Walker and Jake Taylor. Goalkickers- Jed Evans, Christian West and Nick Anastassiou all kicked 4 goals, Zaine Cordy and Luke Bastiaan both kicked 2, while James Stirling, Miles Henderson and Josh Kehagias all snagged a goal apiece. If we continue to improve as a unit we'll see where the next few weeks take us- hopefully the boys are up to the challenge with confidence in each other sky-high. Cobras Under 14(1) 2nd Semi Final vs Portarlington It wasn't pretty but we got the job done and the boys are deservedly through to a grand final. On a wet, windy cow paddock our superior skills were blunted by the conditions but we know

that when hardness at the ball and a 4 quarter effort is required the character of our boys comes to the fore. A final score of 2 12 24 to 3 0 18 showed our overall dominance in general play even though we couldn't put Portarlington away on the scoreboard. In conditions not suiting forwards, Nat Gravener was very dangerous around goals and with an ounce of luck on any other day would have kicked a bag. Defenders Andy Douglass, Jack Ness, Harry Walker and Brayden Warren threw themselves into every contest and stood firm all day. The game was won through a tireless midfield brigade led by Che Durran, Matt Caldow, Christian West, Ned Holland and Zac Ramsay. Our goalkickers were Christian West and James Teague with 1 each. However, boys they don't give out medals on Semi Final day so if we knuckle down at training and prepare well as a team the rewards could come in a fortnights time. It would be great for the boys to have a lot of Cobra support at Lara on Grand Final day. Under 12 White Round 16 vs South Barwon Red Well what a way to finish off a fantastic season for the Cobras U12 white.

Right from the opening address from coach Simon Holmer of “just go out, have fun and enjoy your last game of the year with mates” You could sense the boys were pumped for a big one. What followed was a dominant display of team football by the Cobras, highlighted in the 2nd quarter by a spectacular marking exhibition by Tom Wallis resulting in 5 goals in ten minutes to the big full forward. This set the scene for the rest of the match. Solid tackles, hard running and taking advantage of turn over saw the boys run out very comfortable winners all over the ground. Cobras 16.14.110 South Barwon 2.0.12 Best: R.Symonds, O.Young, J. Le Maistre, B.Allan, W.Townson, W.Crawford, H.Drake, J.Butteriss Goals: T.Wallis 5, B.Gist 2, B.Allan 2, J.Butteriss, J.Calliguri, L.Lattarulo, J.LeMaistre, K.Lock, C.O’Keefe, R.Symonds Under 12 Orange vs Leopold The final game of the season on a Friday night under lights at Leopold against a side that beat up the Cobras in round 1 by a mile. Well you would not have recognised this side from round 1, that’s for sure. This game was just full of great team footy, hard running,

tackling, protecting one another and just tough, hard at it Cobras footy. With 9 on the bench it was constant rotations but the boys took it in their stride and lifted to the occasion. Captains Joe Smith (a Leader all season) and Oliver Monteith (silky skills) were fabulous all game. Zane Leist spent some time at full forward and booted two very valuable goals. Craig Goodger slotted a beauty on his non preferred boot, Jacko once again used his strength to slot one as did goal sneak Jack Tregenza. Talls Ben Pickering and Peter Attard also got amongst the goals well helped out by Riley Featherby and Ethan Bell. Jesse Sherwell has just kept improving and William Blackman was outstanding on the wing. The Cobras lost by a lonely point in the end but as far as improvement in all aspects of footy goes – they were all winners. Thanks for an amazing ride this season boys – you blokes are fantastic and a very special thanks to all those parents who helped out through out the season. Cobras 7.6.48 Leopold 7.7.49 Best: E.Bell, J.Sherwell, R.Featherby, J.Smith Goals: Z.Leist 2, P.Attard, J.Tregenza, J.Peters, B.Pickering, C.Goodger.

Torquay 15.12.102 smashed Barwon Heads 4.2.26 in the BFL Under 18 Elimination final by 76 points on Sunday. “We had opportunities to win and there was no excuse at the end of the day,” Nicol said. The Grubbers who won last year's Under 18 BFL flag, cannot afford to lose any more games otherwise their season will be over. Game starts against the Tigers at 9:45am on Sunday August 28.

Reserves fall to ‘gulls in thriller OCEAN Grove, reigning BFL Reserves Premiers, lost a onepoint thriller against Battle of the Bridge arch-rivals Barwon Heads. Final scores were Barwon Heads 10.3.63 to Ocean Grove 9.8.62. “It was a very tight year of Reserves football - the top six teams could have beaten anyone on their given day,” Grubbers Reserves playing coach Kane Montgomery said after the match. Barwon Heads Reserves playing coach Craig Williams agreed with Montgomery's thoughts. “The result could have went either way, to our boys credit we fought it out like we have all year,” Williams said.

“We were the lucky ones in the end that managed to get in front when the siren went." The Seagulls, who finished in fifth place, had the wood over the fourth-placed Grubbers in 2010 winning all three encounters including both of their home and away season fixtures. The experienced Montgomery and fellow Grubber Tyson Holt both kicked three goals each, while Seagull star Michael Boothey had a major impact booting five goals. Barwon Heads led by 15 points at the last break before both

teams went on a scoring spree in the last quarter where seven goals were kicked. After winning premierships in 2007 and 2009 Montgomery said there was no expectation to repeat last year's deeds after several key personnel departed the Grubbers. “Losing the amount of players we did last year at the end of the season I said to our guys I was wondering how we would we go,” Montgomery said. “I was not expecting overly an enormous amount, what I was trying to do was to develop our players to play senior football.” Barwon Heads will now meet Torquay in the Reserves First semi-final at Portarlington Recreation Reserve this Sunday.

Grubbers 2010 season review By Cameron McGregor Ocean Grove Football Club Senior coach

Rating 6/10

We played 40 players during 2010, which was equal to the lowest in the competition. We played players in many different positions and my bench was used heavily for rotations. DEFENDERS Our back six players whomever made up the combination throughout each game was super. We had an average score kicked against us, less than last year and we had run from defence as well as at times close checking defenders. Week by week we worked hard on getting the match up’s correct and this was highlighted by Greg Costello on Drysdale tall forward Luke Maher and Anglesea’s Marcus Smith. Daniel Maloney did a super job on Eddie Grout in both games we played against Queenscliff and Harrison Foott kept Geelong Amateur gun and BFL leading goal kicker Jason Tom to only one major in Round 12 at Queens Park. Costello was our general down back, but players such as Sam Fairway who played all 18 games had a fantastic season, the two Bakers and Callum Jones were also strong for most of the season. Sam Van Deuren was good at Centre Half-back. Rating 8/10 MIDFIELDERS This group was hit hard by our departures but ably lead by Captain James Dalton we performed reasonable well when you consider we didn’t have a ruckman. Stats show we broke even in most games in clearances which I would have taken at the start of the season. Additions to the club, Tyson Doherty and Dave Gray fitted in well, whilst Vice-captain James McTaggart played a great

Patrick West.

year on the wing. Desperately needing a Ruckman, that is the off season priority, Rowan O’Callaghan and Matt Davies missing majority of the season also didn’t help. Good to see Dalton and McTaggart kicking regular goals. Rating 6/10 FORWARDS When you lose 150 goals (Paul Breguet and Mathew Jovanovic) you need to structure up differently. We had seven guys kick four goals or more in a game at least once, so we weren’t reliant upon the same guys week in week out. After the first six weeks, Bernie Lynch became a permanent forward rather than a backman and contributed 33 goals. Veteran Wayde Piec when fit and available especially the second half of the year contributed an average of nearly three goals a game, in a position which surprised many around the club. Daniel Maloney started up forward and kicked goals on occasions but also played key jobs down back. Small forward Travis Gavin had a consistent year and youngster Patrick West started the season well in the seniors.

RUCKS Oliver Holland, Roscoe Holmes, Tom McManus, Harrison Foott, Shaun Maloney and eventually Ben Wilkinson were all used in the Ruck. Wilkinson finished the year well. All aren’t genuine Ruckman and contested well but realistically we were smashed in this department. Priority is to recruit one or two guys who can stand up and release these players above into other positions around the ground. Rating out of 2/10 DEBUTANTS/ YOUNGSTERS IN 2010 Patrick West Max Long Roscoe Portelli Dirk Chylek Cameron Marchbank Oliver Holland Patrick Maloney – Eligible U/18 Kaiden Long – Eligible U/18 Jack Rawlings – Eligible U/18 James Bennett – Eligible U/18 James O’Connor – Played one game last year Harrison Foott – Played one game last year

18S AND RES FALL IN ONE POINTERS THE Grubbers Reserves grade and Under 18’s were both pipped at the post in week one of the BFL Finals, writes Mark Heenan. Ocean Grove, reigning BFL Reserves Premiers, lost a onepoint thriller against Battle of the Bridge arch-rivals Barwon Heads. Final scores were Barwon Heads 10.3.63 to Ocean Grove 9.8.62. In the Under 18’s, Ocean Grove lost a nail-biting game to Geelong Amateur at Queens Park on Saturday in the Bendigo Community Bank BFL U18 Cup Qualifying final. Final scores were Ocean Grove 10.12.72 to Geelong Amateur 11.7.73. The 18s get another chance in a knock out against Torquay. Reports and pictures inside.

FIVE JNR NETBALL SIDES IN FINALS

Little surprise as Dalton collects B&F

James Dalton.

GRUBBER James Dalton continues to enhance his status as a current legend of the Ocean Grove Football Club. Dalton, a member of Grubbers 2000, 01, 02, 03 premierships, last week won his fifth consecutive best and fairest award at the club’s vote count night last week. The 31-year-old won the coveted award easily despite missing four matches with a fractured skull. The veteran midfielder who won with a total of 131 votes, finished ahead of boom recruit Bernie Lynch (76), the swashbuckling Ryan Baker (75), reliable defender Greg Costello (70) and rising youngster Harrison Foott (50). The silky smooth James McTaggart (42) and the ferocious Sam Fairway (42) tied for sixth place. Rising youngster Cameron Marchbank (79) took out the Reserves’ vote count defeating Simon Molloy (78) by one vote, while Ben Van Deuren finished in third place with 64 votes. In the Under 18’s Mitch Evans (85) won the vote count award comfortably ahead of Jack Rawlings (66), Todd Rodgers (58), Patrick Maloney (53) and Kane Reardon (52). Rawlings, Maloney and Reardon all played senior football with the Grubbers in 2010. Coach’s season review page 31.

Aaron Hapgood skilfully marks during the under 18s game against Barwon Heads, ahead of kicking one of his four majors of the day.

FIVE of Ocean Grove’s Netball junior sides have made the finals. This is a fantastic effort by the girls and their coaches. They will be playing over the next three Sundays at Drysdale. Get along and support their finals campaigns. The junior matches start at 8.30am and run until midday. Match reports page 29.
