OCEAN Grove residents are being urged to join forces with their neighbours across the bridge in a bid to improve alternative transport options. The Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads organizers of a community forum being held at Barwon Heads Community Hall on Saturday say that joining forces will deliver a strong message to State Government which has allocated $88million in Transport Funding Relief for the improvement of public transport (including bus services) for the Geelong region. Residents of the two towns are encouraged to attend and consider “issues of concern, possible solutions to public transport services and alternative transport options for our region”, said Jan Testro of the Barwon Heads Association. Jan said issues up for debate include a new central bus interchange in Moorabool Street, Geelong, streamlining timetables, routes and centralizing destinations, developing an Ocean Grove / Barwon Heads town bus system, developing an Ocean Grove bus interchange (possibly at the corner of the Terrace & Hodgson St or in the vicinity of Market Place, Ocean Grove/ Collendina), designing more direct routes for some bus services (peak times), reviewing bus stops in the region and scheduling bus timetables to tie in with new train timetables. Jan added that McHarry’s bus company had already recognized the need to increase bus facilities at Market Place and there are ongoing talks about facilities for Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre. Ocean Grove Community Association chairman Michael Harbour said: “Even though Ocean Grove is described as urban and Barwon Heads is more like a village, there are still a lot of synergies between the towns. “It (the forum) is not just about public transport, it’s about alternative modes of transport.”

Geelong or bust: Geoffrey Waite, Jan Testro and Michael Harbour. A survey on McHarry’s bus services between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and Geelong is also being circulated prior to the meeting. The initial results will be reported at the forum although those attending will get a chance to submit their views. The results will eventually be handed to McHarry’s. The Department of Transport’s regional manager for Geelong Richard Sloan has also indicated to the organizers that he would welcome feedback from the forum. The Public Transport on the Bellarine Peninsula Community Forum will be held on Saturday March 28 at Barwon Heads Community Hall, Hitchcock Avenue, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

Town gears up for Good Friday Appeal

OCEAN Grove’s Mex is preparing to stage its legendary Good Friday Appeal auction again this year. The restaurant which has supported the event for the last 20 years was packed to the rafters last year (pictured left) and the organisers are hoping that the local businesses can stretch their generocity still further this year, especially in light of the recent Bushfire fundraising. The event on Thursday April 9 from 7.30pm. A Dinner and Auction in aid of the appeal will also take place at Club Grove on Good Friday.

THIS Saturday (March 28) both Bakers Delight bakeries in Ocean Grove will be hosting an Easter ‘Bundraiser Day’, donating $1 from every pack of six Hot Cross Buns sold on the day to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Funds raised will go towards purchasing a middle ear analyser for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Audiology Department, which will assess hearing impairment in children from infancy to adolescence. Reserve fears rear up at CFA briefing

The DSE’s Paul McCoughtry fields questions on Ocean Grove Nature Reserve. A CFA meeting to help locals plan for bushfires became an unofficial forum for venting fears about the safety of Ocean Grove Nature Reserve. Locals had been listening to the CFA’s community presentation Living with Fire which explained bushfire behaviour, how to recognise high risk days and how to protect yourself and defend your home. The talk was successfully deliverd by Grove firefighter Cindy Harrison-Roberts. But just as the meeting was concluding a good number in the audience expressed their concerns to DSE fire management representative Paul McCoughtry who attended the meeting. They highlighted the mass of dead branches on the ground in the reserve suggesting the reserve had been “neglected”. However Mr McCoughtry said there had been ongoing work done to manage the risk, including

the creation of a substantial fire break at the south of the reserve. Asked by another member of the audience: “Is there a plan to do a controlled burn in the reserve this winter?” Mr McCoughtry replied: “We have a very small window of opportunity when there is a certain temperature and a certain wind direction when it can be done safely.” He said an attempt 18 months ago was unsuccessful. Mr McCoughtry added that Ocean Grovers should be comforted that there are “a number of ways out of Ocean Grove”, and that there are a “lot of responders close by”. Other important points the CFA wanted locals to take away with them was the need to clear up around houses and buildings, to clear gutters and to make sure there is sufficient access for a fire truck to travel along driveways.

a day in the life - cynthia potter

At home among the dunes

Cynthia Potter. MAY this year (2009) will mark my 37th year as a resident of Ocean Grove however I spent many happy years holidaying in the Grove before I moved here. My formative years were spent in Geelong where I attended St Andrews for my primary education and then onto Belmont High to learn how to have fun in life.

My first memories of Ocean Grove are as a sixth grader (1959-60) staying at my girlfriend’s holiday house in Baker Street and the huge sand dune that was at the wire back fence. There are lots of good things about Ocean Grove, probably my favourite area is the beach especially RAAFS. The constant changes to our coast are dynamic.

The town itself offers great retail outlets, and a diversity of fine cafes and restaurants. Also I have made many wonderful, supportive friends over the years. I am fortunate enough to work full time for Barwon Coast Committee of Management, (coastal crown land managers from Black Rock to Bonnyvale Road), as the administration coordinator. I have worked for the foreshore for 18 years, and take pride in the fact that I have been an integral part of a team that has not only protected the environment but has also established facilities for the enjoyment of not only locals, but for the many tourists who also appreciate our special part of the world and are a very significant part of our economy. Issues for Ocean Grove in the future with the increasing population will include the impacts on the fragile coastal zones. Away from work my passion is patchwork and quilting. I have come a long way since my first efforts and belong to a group called Seachange Quilters who recently held a very successful show in which I exhibited two quilts. When I retire I would like to take up golf. If I wasn’t in Ocean Grove I would like to be with my son and his family in Tennessee USA where he and his wife live with my beautiful grandchildren.

Bungled Bridge Outcome PLANNING Minister Madden has used Section 16 of the Planning and Environment Act (1987) to override the recommendation of his own Advisory Committee, and all the opposition to building two Barwon Heads bridges in the delicate Barwon River estuary, when a single bridge will do. This opposition has been from the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Victoria, the City of Greater Geelong, the Barwon Coast Committee of Management, the Barwon Heads Association and the Ocean Grove Community Association as well as 2,500 people at the ONE VOICE ONE BRIDGE Rally in January this year and the 3,500 signatures in favour of one bridge presented to the Legislative Council this month. The Brumby Government appears intent on bulldozing its own political agenda through without regard to the content of all this strong opposition. Madden claims ‘the existing bridge will be reconstructed’ when it was supposed to be retained and repaired, and will ‘feature much of the heritage character’. Not when it can’t be seen because the view is blocked by the modern new second bridge, a new bridge that will cause more destruction of the fragile Ocean Grove spit and the loss of pristine family beaches. Local Member Crutchfield claims that ‘in 2005, VicRoads found the bridge only had four to six years life left’ and goes on to proselytize about the safety of local residents and visitors. Well the four to six years of life was in the Barwon Heads Bridge Report of the Advisory Committee in 2007. So we are safe until between 2011 and 2013. We’d be even safer if Crutchfield could arrange for the 16 tonne limit on the bridge to be policed and not breached by more than 40 big trucks a week. Now that Brumby has effectively overridden all the checks and balances necessary for good government, he can build what ever he likes. How about building what all of us like too, one bridge, and saving $20 million on the unnecessary, unwanted, second bridge? Fun times for the holidays

Vladivostok Voice

WITH the Easter break just around the corner, now is a great time to plan what you can do with the kids. There’s a huge range of activities going on in and around the Grove, Barwon Heads and Geelong during those April weeks but you want to get in soon to avoid disappointment. Among the regular organised holiday activities are the City of Greater Geelong School Holiday programs. Aimed at primary age children these activities and excursions operate out of Ocean Grove and across the Geelong district.

Alternatively there are one off days where they kids can try something really different. NAS Karts at North Geelong is always lots of fun and certainly gives youngsters a chance to let off some steam. For something really different though - and perhaps something the grown ups want to try - how about a flight in an Auto Gyro. Get a chance to see breathtaking views of the coastline from the best vantage point there is. In addition Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre runs its own school holiday program for primary aged children. See page 14 for details.

CITY OF GREATER GEELONG SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM 6 TO 17 APRIL - 8.00AM TO 6.00PM DAILY Venues include: Ocean Grove, Leopold, Belmont, Newtown and Bell Post Hill. Gifts from near and far

Dorothy Talintyre.

FLAMINGO Gifts and Décor is a new gift shop which has just recently opened in the Terrace which is independently owned and operated by Dorothy and Phil Talintyre. Dorothy is the store manager and her aim is to provide a wide selection of gifts not readily available elsewhere in the region, which is reflected in the business logo “Gifts with a Difference”. “We moved to Ocean Grove six years ago from Melbourne and have fallen in love with the area. We see Ocean Grove as a vibrant seaside town with unlimited potential for growth in the future. As the population ranges from young families through to our more mature citizens, it gives us the opportunity to provide something different for all age groups. We also aim to help attract tourists to the area by providing a range of gifts designed specifically for the many visitors to the area.”

Classic craft in Wallington I ESTABLISHED GB Plantation Shutters in July last year after working with timber, building furniture and other items as a hobby for many years. My specialty is hand made Grandfather Clock cases usually made from American Cherry which is a beautiful furniture timber. GB Plantation Shutters makes and fits Western Cedar Plantation Shutters for internal and external use in homes, offices and outdoor areas such as Gazebos, spas et cetera. Each shutter is hand made by me to suit my individual customer requirements

and each shutter really is a “one-off ”piece of furniture. I am unique in that I only use cedar for my shutters, no substitutes such as MDF, Basswood or other timber. My wife often helps with sanding and other jobs when I am overrun! My goal is to stay small to ensure that I can always remain focussed on the needs of my customers. I have spent over 30 years in Banking & Finance including 5 years off-shore with a French Bank working in Hong Kong & London. The woodworking makes an interesting contrast to what used to be my day job. In April it will be two years since we moved to Ocean Grove and we plan to be here for the rest of our lives! We have lived in a number of places but the common theme was “no real space” so when the opportunity arose to buy a small acreage we jumped at it. We have friends in Ocean Grove, we have always loved the beach and the lifestyle is a

Dorothy has travelled extensively overseas, which has inspired her to seek gifts that represent many different cultures. Dorothy also welcomes and actively seeks suggestions for new items from the people most important to her, her customers. “We were lucky enough to visit Japan two years ago and were so impressed by the wonderful Japanese people that we decided to include many Japanese themed gifts in our range, from Geisha & Kokeshi dolls to Japanese tea sets & parasols. “We source much of our collection from the huge trade fairs conducted in both Melbourne and Sydney, which give us access to over 1200 suppliers from all over Australia as well as overseas. Away from work Dorothy’s interests include family and friends, golf, as well as being a very keen gardener, often assisted by her ‘helpful’(?) dog Goldie, a 10 yr old juvenile Spoodle.

Reining in the water

A PARTNERSHIP between Bellarine Secondary College, Bellarine Landcare Nursery and the Federal Government is already harvesting benefits. A water harvesting system that takes water from the roof of the college’s gym is allowing the indigenous community nursery to maintain its recent successes without relying as heavily on the mains water supply. Formed in 1992 the Landcare Nursery started out growing 5,000 indigenous trees a year – it now grows 40,000 to 60,000. That means the demand for water has grown. However, during the recent rains filled the new

tanks and harvested some 200,000 litres of water – which would have otherwise been lost. The funds for the installation of the water tanks were made available through a Commonwealth Community Water Grant. Local firm Menheere Brothers also donated time and the use of equipment to carry out the earthworks on the site and about 700 volunteer hours went into the project. Last week the new water harvesting system was officially opened by City of Greater Geelong Coryule ward councillor John Doull who also holds Environment and Sustainability and Climate Change portfolios.

This includes quotes, booking confirmations, descriptions of goods ordered and lists of services booked. 4. Keep everything together so nothing gets lost or forgotten. 5. If the planning is getting on top of you both, take time out. Take a mini holiday away from the stress of it all, and remember all the reasons why you’re getting married. 6. Be careful on your hen’s or buck’s night - it’s a special night for you and your friends, but don’t forget the reason you’re there. 7. Expect some wedding day nerves, they’re normal for both of you. The trick lies in managing them. Take a long walk, or even treat yourself to a massage to help you relax and calm your nerves. 8. Groom’s should plan a surprise for their bride on entering the wedding night suite. It could be a bed covered in roses, a bottle of champagne and two glasses next to a bubble bath, or some beautiful lingerie. 9. Finals Div 2 Blue.

Div 8 final.

Last Saturday Ocean Grove had 2 teams playing off in the Geelong District Men’s Grand Finals. In Division 2 at Leopold, the Grove trailed all day but rallied towards the end to score a tie against Geelong Cement. This meant that all four rinks had to play an extra end. After the first extra end the scores were tied so an additional extra end was played. Once again they tied and the tension was really building. Unfortunately Geelong Cement got over the line to win the flag in one of the closest contests you would ever see. The Grove’s best winning rink for the day was Frank Filia, Neil Wallace, Tom Bramwell and an outstanding display of bowls from skip Trevor Turnley. Congratulations to the boys for a super effort against a very strong team. The other final was fought out at Queenscliff against Ocean Grove’s Division 8 “Dream Team”. The Grove had proved to be the strongest team all year in this division, but unfortunately picked the wrong game to have one of those “off days” The final result being

Portarlington 119, Dream Team 72. The best Grove rink was Brett McCalman, Albert Touwslager, Lindsay Williams, Martin van Doren(skip). The lads had a terrific season and deserve the right to advance to division 7 next year. Grove supporters are hoping for better results this week with both the Men’s and Ladies Division 1 teams playing in grand finals. Watch this space next issue for results. The Preliminary final of the Bellarine Ladies Division 1 pennant was held at Leopold last Tuesday between Ocean Grove 2 and Queenscliff. The Grove ladies got off to a bad start and at one stage were 20 shots down. Just before half time they clawed their way back, reducing the deficit to only 6 shots. In a tense finish our girls just missed out, going down by only 3 shots in a terrific display of bowls. A special mention to Lorna McMahon who played brilliantly throughout the finals series. Congratulations to all our girls on a great season. The Grove Number 1 team now play Queenscliff in the Grand Final, good luck girls. In the Ladies club triples championship Kim McConville, Nancy Quinton and Val Cook had a good win against Gayle Sydenham, Betty Wilding and Brenda Anderson. The men’s pairs final was played recently and in a close match, Doug Woods and Ron Brown were victorious over John McConville and Michael Allen 17 -15. The 21 up handicap singles between Bill Ryan and John McConville was won by (not available at the time of going to press).

lost our 1st wicket for 13 off 6, then 2 /27 off 13, 3/35 off 17 and at the break we were 7/67. With only 3 wickets left we asked the gang to apply themselves and at least try to bat out the remaining overs as passing the total set by Barwon Heads was out of the equation. 1st over after tea we lost Sheldon Barrows for 13 and then in the 31st lost Adam and we were only on 76. This left James Deller & Julian Wilson to try and get to the 48th over. The boys tried hard and some of the best batting of the day had a last wicket stand of 41 before Jimer got caught on a well made 23 in the 42nd over. Luke Davis opened the innings and played well for 16 considering the bowling attack he had to face. Julian ended on 16 not out. We’ve had a great year and have made the finals, so let’s put in the extra efforts at training and on game days and try to make it all the way. GO COBRAS!!!! Semi – Final - Playing Ocean Grove, the day started off well with Jacob winning the toss and electing to bat. Alas not a great start with Jacob copping a good one in the 5th that went straight through him, score 1-3, then we lost Luke in the 10th, 2-15 a shaky start. Kieran and Ash took the score to 31 off 19 before Kieran was caught. At the break we were on 60, not bad considering that at 20 we were only 31. At this point I thought that considering we’d only lost 3 wickets and had some good batsmen still to come that a good score was obtainable. Don’t ask me why, but always after the break teams’ loose wickets and we had a mini collapse and were looking at an early end. Then Adam Lazarus & Sheldon Barrow got us going again and the 2 saw out the remaining overs and got us to 128 after 55. A pretty defendable score on what was a slow ground. Batsmen to do well were Ashley Denneman 26, Adam Lazarus 24 & Sheldon Barrow 19. There were 2 good partnerships on the day with Ash & James adding 33 for the 4th wicket and Adam & Sheldon adding 51 for the 10th. Sunday; and we had to bowl and field well to keep the pressure on the Grove. Julian & James opened the bowling and did extremely well allowing only 15 runs off 9 overs. Then Jacob and Nick also bowled well with Jacob eventually getting the first wicket in the 20th over. At the break they were 1 –73, not that many more runs than we were the previous day. The Grove finally passed our score in the 46th over. All of the Cobras bowled well, and no one was really expensive. Our fielding let us down with missed catches and missed opportunities. Had those opportunities been taken, then I believe the game may have had a different outcome. Their 2 main batsmen were both dropped on very low scores and then again later on. Finally a great effort Cobras, the parents were proud of you all. All gels well for a good team next year. I would like to thank Leigh Norquay for his tireless contribution to the team as coach, and also a special mention to Ian Deller and Eddy Ellwood for helping with the umpiring. Also thank you to the parents who showed up each week and helped out when asked. Under 13: Collendina 1: Round 9 - In the final match the Cobras faced Portarlington at the dry and dusty, Shell Road oval. At the end of day 1 the game was evenly poised with Portarlington 7 for 90 and the Cobras 6 for 84. Liam Tipping and Lachie Cooke bowled very well to have the stats of 2 for 9 and 2 for 2 respectively. Ben Sanders batted beautifully to be 17 not out and Lachie Cooke 11 not out. Day 2: Portarlington turned the screws and dismissed the Cobras final

UNDER 15 Round 9 – What a day. Week one and the wind was blowing from the south at about 100 kph, at least that was what it felt like. The home forgot to bring stumps and we lost about 20 mins of play. We lost the toss and were put into the field. All the bowlers did well with the wind but when it came to bowling into the wind then the Heads were able to get the easy runs. A few dropped catches and the game could’ve been different as those that were dropped went on to make 50’s. Great bowling by Julian Wilson and Nick Sanders, (Julian ended up 1/8 off his 4 while Nick had 0/5 off his). The Heads batted well and at the end of the day we were chasing 225 from 48 overs for victory. Not an impossible total to chase I thought as we had been playing good cricket lately. What a difference between weekends. Week two saw calm conditions and the Cobras all set to bat. After a slow but progressive start we

oceangrovevoice.com 3 batsman for 24 runs to leave the Cobras with a total of 108. Ben Sanders batted on after the team was dismissed to finish the season in fine form, scoring 27 runs. Port returned to the crease and went onto compile an impressive total of 222 for 10 wickets. They batted on to have a final total of 259 from 52 overs. Lachie Cooke, Riley Denneman and Andy Douglass, all finished with 2 for 26 of 4 overs. As the cricket season has now ended for our team, I would like to congratulate them all on a great season. They all showed great sportsmanship throughout the year, learnt a lot along the way and most importantly had fun. Well done to all and special thanks to the U/11 players who filled in throughout the year to make up the numbers. Thanks also to the parents who helped with scoring, umpiring and cooking. Under 11: Round 12 - The final game of the season saw Collendina Orange take on the Collendina Girls team. Winning the toss and batting first Orange was away to a good start with Byron Taylor (14), Corey Pfeiffer (12) and Nat Gravenor (11) all amongst the runs. They were supported by Lachlan Smith (6), Kyle Ewart (6) and Logan Taylor (7) With some good running between the wickets and solid stroke play the boys finished on 143. The girls got off to a good start losing only one wicket in the first six overs. Some accurate bowling from Corey Pfeiffer, Logan Taylor and Lachlan Smith resulted in wickets starting to fall. Also chipping in with wickets were Michael Smith, Harry Morris, Liam McManus and Hugh Browne. This restricted the girls to 56 runs. Congratulations to all the boys in the Collendina Orange team for this season. The boys were enthusiastic and willing to listen. This positive attitude resulted in skill improvements from all players. Make sure you stick with your cricket and good luck to everyone for next season! Collendina White: Collendina white has had a great start to the season showing much improvement in both skills and respect for the game. We have major contributions with both bat and ball along with some sound fielding. Our leading run getters have been Brad Procter 35, Riley Kohler 26, Jacob Negri 23, and Liam Warren 15. Leading wicket takers are Brad Procter & Craig Goodger 4, and Campbell Revie 3, while Riley Kohler, Liam Warren, Reed Jordan and Sam White have been the most economical having the least runs scored off them. Sam Negri, Tom Wallis, Julian Powell, and Jess Gall-Carson have shown great improvement in all aspects of the game. Collendina Blue: Round 12 – The final round of the season against Barwon Heads Blue saw many of the team playing their last games in Under 11 with old timer Darcy playing just under 50 games for the club. With the boys hoping to have a good game to finish off their Friday Night experience the team once again made in excess of 100 off the bat. The first 2 pairs got the side off to a fantastic start making more than half of the runs themselves. Fielding with just 9 players, the Cobras restricted Barwon Heads to just 53 runs. Wonderful improvement throughout the season has seen the boys go from strength to strength with a very consistent group of young cricketers. Fantastic assistance was given by Bill and Mark in guiding the team through every over. Also thanks to all other parents for assistance in scoring, supporting each team member and enjoying the Friday social evenings throughout this fun but frustrating weather impacted season.

The Ocean Grove Juniors completed their home and away matches with some mixed results, however, both the Under 15’s and the Under 13’s managed to finish the season in the top four of their respective competitions to qualify for finals action. Under 17’s: Our most senior grubbers had their best game of the season against second placed Torquay and came close to causing a major upset. Bowling first, our boys struggled to take wickets early, but some fine fielding restricted Torquay from posting a much higher score than their 4/221. Aaron Habgood was the pick of the bowlers and finished with 2 for 36 off 11 overs. In reply, Mitch Evans and Aaron Habgood again got the team off to a magnificent start before Aaron was trapped in front LBW for 41 in the last over before morning tea. After the break, Mitch Evans smashed the Torquay attack to all corners of Memorial Reserve before he was well caught in the gully for 82. Despite a swashbuckling 23 from Matty Boore and a patient 13 from Ben Williams, the boys fell agonizingly short and were all out in the last over of the game for 203. Under 15’s: In the last game of the season, Mark and Shane’s boys traveled to Leopold, knowing that a loss could see them tumble out of the top four and miss the finals. Batting first on the small Leopold Primary School oval, Zac Henderson continued his stellar season with the bat making 76 not out in the teams’ score of 293. Jack Cadman found some form with the bat at the right end of the season making 51 and he was ably supported by Lewie Berry (30) and Darcy Featherby (36). In reply, Leopold finished on 9/213 resulting in our boys claiming second position on the ladder and a home semi final the following week against Collendina. In the Semi Final, Collendina batted first on the lush Memorial Reserve oval and were progressing steadily at 3 for 60 at the morning tea break. A superb direct hit run out from James Habgood after the break kick started the boys and they ran through the Collendina middle order to have them reeling at 8 for 86. Some rear guard action by Collendina saw them post a competitive 8 for 128 at the close of play. James Bruce was the pick of our bowlers, taking a superb 4 for 15 off 12 overs. In reply, the ever-reliable Zac Henderson made 52 not out, his third score above 50 for the season. Loius Coulton chipped in with a fine 40 not out and the boys passed the Collendina total only two wickets down with 10 overs to spare, ensuring a home grand final against the Barwon Heads Seagulls. The grand final against Barwon Heads ended in a disappointing draw due to the inclement weather on Saturday morning. With the boys bowling first, only 25 overs could be bowled on day 1 and although we restricted Barwon Heads to 4 for 56, early wickets needed to be taken on Sunday morning to give our batsmen enough overs to chase down the target. It wasn’t to be, however, as Barwon Heads posted a more than reasonable 9 for 140 off their 55 overs, with Louie Coulton, Lewie Berry and Zac Henderson taking 2 wickets each. With only 24 overs to chase down the Barwon Heads total, the boys had no choice except to swing the bat and at the close of play we finished on 9 for 78. As Barwon Heads finished higher on the ladder at the end of the home and away season, they were declared the premiers. Under 13’s: Greg’s lads traveled to Barwon Heads for their last round encounter against the resurgent Barwon Heads Blues with the knowledge that a victory would see them finish the home and away season on top of the ladder and a home semi final the following week. Barwon Heads compiled a competitive 9 for 120 off their

allotted overs with Brad Fendyk (2 for 5) and Matty Gibbs (2 for 11) the pick of our bowlers. In reply, our boys were bundled out for 93, our worst batting performance for the season, with Jake Taylor top scoring with 16. The loss saw the boys fall to third position on the ladder and face Collendina at Collendina in the Semi Final the following week. Fielding first in the semi final, Collendina compiled a formidable 5 for 88 off their first 26 overs and in reply, our boys made a patient 4 for 76 at the close of the first day’s play, with Jackson Kent 12 not out over night. Returning to the crease on Sunday morning, Jackson Kent stuck his head down and posted 36 not out, ensuring our total of 130 would give the Collendina boys something to chase in their remaining overs. Collendina looked to have the game in their grasp when they needed just 5 runs to win off 9 overs, however with our boys only needing one wicket, Jackson Kent delivered the knockout blow and the boys were in the grand final. Ted Trevean was the star with the ball taking 2 for 18 off 6 overs, while Tom Beasley was miserly, taking 1 for 8 off 5 overs. In the grand final, our lads were on the more fortunate end of the inclement weather, as we finished higher on the ladder than our opponent – Barwon Heads Blues. Batting first, our boys made a shaky start and at one stage were 3 for 10. Jackson Kent and James Laverty rescued the innings with 30 not out each and we finished with a respectable 4 for 117. In reply, Barwon Heads made 6 for 87, which included two run-outs and the bowling spoils shared. With the match ending in a draw, our boys were declared the premiers which was just reward for this fine team of cricketers. Under 11’s: With no finals in the Under 11 competition, our most junior grub-
