Vandals destroy statue A PIECE of Ocean Grove artwork has fallen victim to a recent spate of vandalism. A two-and-half-metre metal and stone statue in front of Hendry Cycles on The Parade was knocked over on Saturday night, January 8. The artwork named Bike Dreaming was created to celebrate the UCI cycling championship in 2010 by local artist Karen McGlynn. Karen said she donated the $3000 piece as a passion project to get more art around town. “I did it as a love job and we all want to see artwork around the town,” she said. “There’s a little pocket of people doing
it for the passion, then it gets destroyed and you think ‘why bother?’ I’m sick of it.” Karen has contributed art pieces around Ocean Grove including the mermaids and feature wall outside The Dunes restaurant on Ocean Grove’s Main Beach. Through her art classes at Kazworks she aims to engage local children through art and give them pride in the public pieces around their towns. “Some of my children cried when they heard the statue had been knocked over,” Karen said. Stephen Draper from Hendry said it was a shame the artwork was ruined as he showed The

about the vandalism of the statue, with people encouraged to contact Bellarine police or Hendry Cycles. HAVE YOUR SAY journo@ oceangrovevoice.com
Brigade honours fireys OCEAN Grove’s fire brigade has honoured many of its employees and volunteers with National Medals of Service. One of the nine medal recipients included local volunteer firefighter Doug Pearce who received the National Medal Second Clasp for more than 35 years of service to the CFA. National medals are awarded to people working in emergency services. The initial medal is given after 15 years, with an extra bar added for every ten years of additional service. Doug has been a

volunteer for the CFA in both West Geelong and Ocean Grove since 1968 after marrying into a CFA family. “I really had no choice but to join,” he said. He is a passionate member who has taken on secretarial and presidential roles over the years. “It’s being prepared to go that little bit further, not just turning up for meetings and sitting up
the back,” he said. Despite being a fulltime metal worker in Geelong, Doug always gets out of bed when 2am emergency calls come through; being a volunteer means being on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “It’s not good to get a call at 2am but it’s all part of it.” Doug said his passion for the work had pushed him to continue to
volunteer despite retiring from work three years ago. “You wouldn’t be in it otherwise, even though a lot of the time it might be a dropped fuse, you just go because it might be a fire,” he said. The National Medal recommendations were one of the last things the late Captain Bob Smith did before his sudden death in July 2010.
THE developers of Kingston Park have submitted amended plans for housing on land off Oakdean Boulevard. The revised plans are for 33 blocks, up from the three blocks featured in a 2008 amendment. However, Geelong Council officers have dismissed suggestions that the land in question was designated a reserve. “We have received a variation application to build 33 residential blocks but this has never been a reserve nor publically owned,” a council spokesman said. “It has always been in the hands of the developer. It is not a reserve and had never been in council control.” Members of the public can make submissions on the application until February 8.
Grab a quick bargain now PEOPLE hunting for bargain furniture are invited down to the Ocean Grove St Vincent de Paul Centre in Marine Parade during February. St Vinnies has had to refuse recent clothing donations due to an overwhelming amount of on-site stock. Volunteers hope the sale will provide space for future goods. All furniture will be halfprice for a week from February 1.
Business closing sale LITTLE Darlings Babe, Children’s and Maternity is having a closing down sale after almost four years of business. Owners Rebecca Dickeson and Nicole Wirth have chosen not to renew the lease on their Marine Parade premises and will have their final day on February 26. From February 7 all clothing will be half price. Any remaining stock will be donated to local community groups.

Band aid and a 5c drive as Grove chips in for flood relief LOCAL musicians together with the Ocean Grove Hotel, will hold a fundraising event on Saturday February 5 to raise funds for the Queensland and Victorian flood appeals. The event has been sanctioned by The Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal, along with the Red Cross who are officially sanctioned to collect funds on behalf of the
Victorian Flood victims. Although the program has been quickly put together and not finalised as yet, it includes; solo performers stage from midday until 6pm; Saturday Night Live from 6pm until midnight; barbecue from 4-6pm; auctions and raffles throughout the day and evening. Musicians are encouraged to register their interest in per-forming
by phone or text to David Dorman on 0408 575 799. Goods and services are being sought for the auctions and raffles. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to register their interest by phoning Kevin Downey on 0408 495 790. There will be an emphasis on family participation during the afternoon session with family friendly activities
and entertainment. Kids are encouraged to participate in the Open Mic from midday – 6pm. The program will be finalised within the next week. Meanwhile Bar Deli in the Terrace is staging a 5c drive to raise money for the flood relief. Owner Kerry Maxwell said that they hoped to fill their giant jar by laying 5c pieces from one end of the court yard to the back.
Car wash axe attack POLICE are seeking witnesses to a brazen attack on an Ocean Grove car wash earlier this month. It is believed that five men pulled up at the Splish Splash Car Wash in Grubb Road at about 10pm on Tuesday January 11 before they began laying into the coin machines with an axe. According to a witness who disturbed them, three of the men entered the car wash while two appeared to keep guard. Senior Constable Shaun Moore of Bellarine Police said that they would like to hear from anyone who saw the men who were driving an early model Holden Commodore, possibly with Queensland registration plates. “If anyone else was at the car wash when the men pulled up we would like to hear from them,” he said. Owner Peter Freddy said that the attack was a puzzle as the offenders were not clearly targeting the cash section of the machines. They have smashed a stainless steel door on the self-service bay and put the axe through a hoseline. Peter who has run the car wash at the industrial estate since 1997 said the attack was puzzling.
Splish Splash Car Wash owner Peter Freddy has been left with a hefty repair bill after raiders smashed up coin machines at his Grubb Road business.
“We had burglaries and break-ins from time to time but I have never seen something that appears to be straight malicious vandalism. A professional burglar would at least have a crow bar. That’s the first time I’ve seen someone come at it with an axe.” Peter said that the brave actions of a passerby who confronted the men before they fled probably saved the car wash from even more damage.
Raiders used an axe to attack car wash machines.
quick news Smelly shoplifters POLICE are investigating the theft of more than $800 worth of perfume from an Ocean Grove pharmacy. Seven bottles of the Dolce and Gabbana Red and Light Blue perfumes were taken from the Amcal pharmacy in the Terrace by shoplifters on Thursday. It is believed there were at least two shoplifters involved and they all appeared to be under 25 in age. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
CFA reports OCEAN Grove CFA attended five call outs in the last fortnight, only one of which was to an alarm in their home town. The Ocean Grove call was the most recent, to a smoke scare in The Avenue. The most serious call out was to a fire at a property in Punt Road, Barwon Heads on January 12. Crews also attended a malfunctioning alarm at a property in Margate Street, in the same township. The other calls were to support Queenscliff at calls in Hesse Street and Gellibrand Street. Meanwhile Region 7, the region that includes Ocean Grove, the Bellarine, Geelong and the Surf Coast, has revealed that false alarms have cost it close to $1 million for the last 12 months. Across the region there were 863 false alarms in 2010, a dozen more calls than genuine call outs. Ocean Grove experienced proportionately less false alarms. Over that period crews were inappropriately called out 11 times. That is set against 20 call outs for fire and explosions, four for hazardous conditions, four for motor accidents, as well as other miscellaneous calls.

Dog owners under fire PEOPLE are flouting local laws by walking their dogs on Ocean Grove Main Beach. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from Hodgson Street to the Barwon River at all during the summer period from December 18 until January 31. Barwon Coast’s Bob Jordan said local law officers have been out
on Ocean Grove beaches issuing advice and fines to people caught doing the wrong thing. “City of Greater Geelong local law officers have patrolled a number of times issuing educational advice to people found with dogs on the beach and have issued fines to people who continually do not comply,” he said.
CLOSE CUT: Cath and Kirsten are shedding their locks for World’s Greatest Shave in March.
Barwon Coast staff have also developed a brochure informing dog walkers of the rules and regulations, handing them out on Main Beach during the summer. Bob said dog owners wanting to walk their pets on the beach in Ocean Grove during summer can do so to the left of Hodgson Street, heading towards Collendina.
DOG-FREE ZONE: Visitors and locals alike are being encouraged to abide by restrictions on beaches.
AN OCEAN Grove mother and daughter team plan to shave their heads for the Leukaemia Foundation. Cath and Kirsten Sattler will join the World’s Greatest Shave at Ocean Grove hair salon Coastal Cutz, on March 12. The women were motivated to join the event partly due to losing a family friend to cancer but mostly to help make a difference to the lives of people who are living with Leukaemia. Cath said she was inspired by people who were battling cancer and had been for years.
“People think we’re brave cutting off our hair but compared to people suffering, it’s nothing,” she said. Kirsten said she was not worried about having no hair as she had always wanted to shave her head to raise money. “I’ve always wanted to do it, to cut off my hair for a good cause. It’s a big deal but it’s not the biggest deal in the world,” she said. Cath and Kirsten decided to both shave their heads to give each other support and to make sure neither backs out at the last minute. The two

participated in 2010’s Rip to River in a similar show of teamwork. Kirsten is in year 12 at Bellarine Secondary College but isn’t fazed by the thought of having no hair on her 18th birthday. “I’ll have a theme party and wear a wig or we’ll go hat shopping,” she said. Cath and Kirsten are aware many people will give money towards flood relief but are still hoping locals will help them achieve more than their $1000 target. Happy Australia Day Ocean Grove IF anything can sum up the Great Aussie Spirit it is the pratice - rather than the theory - of ‘mateship’ and of ‘having a go’ that has been witnessed in country Victoria and Queensland over the past few weeks. That is the heart of the Australian identity, wherever we are from. Australia Day should be summed up as a day that Aussies can be proud of this ability to extend the hand of friendship, to find common ground, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or religion, and to embrace all that this great land offers.

Voice reaches new heights THE Voice reached new heights last year when a group of locals travelled to Nepal and the Himalayas. Senior Sergeant Gary Coombes, local paramedics Ian Russell and Jack Langedyk and friend from Cairns, began their trip in Kathmandu and then flew into Lukla before Trekking to Everest Base Camp. After that they trekked to an adjacent valley, the Gokyo Ri (Peak), where they took in stunning views of lakes. The group is pictured on the right on top of Gokyo Ri, at about 5,400 metres up. The other photos are of various locals reading the Voice in Kathmandu - the Monkey Temple and other tourist spots.

CAUSE AND EFFECT: Kyle Lee, left, nominated Alistair McCooke for an Australian of the Year Award in 2008. BELOW: Alistair on the panel at Federation Square with journalist Beverley O’Connor and former athlete Kyle Vander Kuyp on January 19.
Who are we, Australia? OCEAN Grove MICA paramedic and surf lifesaver Alistair McCooke has attempted what many people struggle to do. Alistair is an Australia Day Ambassador who took part in a forum held at Federation Square on January 19 to tackle the topic: Who are we, Australia? He was one of five panel members and Alistair discussed how his experiences had taught him about what personifies being Australian. Many of the panel members, including former athlete Kyle Vander-Kuyp and journalist Beverley O’Connor, struggled to define who Australians were but admitted that it was different for everyone. Alistair used discussions with friends and family
for his presentation and decided it was a personal, difficult and hard-todefine subject. He drew on international experiences from his time in the Middle East and his passion for volunteering for local community organisations. Alistair also raised the point inspired by the recent flood disaster that being Australian wasn’t defined by what we believed but by what we did. The panel then fielded questions from the audience on topics ranging from multiculturalism, flagwaving and the tricky subject of what it means to be un-Australian. Alistair said it was our
differences that brought us together. “Australia is made up of so many diverse cultures; each person has their own individual narrative of what makes them Australian,” he said. At an after-party reception, Alistair’s coworker and long-time mate Kyle Lee explained why he nominated Alistair for Australian of the Year in 2008 He was inspired by his work in getting lifesaving heart defibrillators in surf clubs. “I thought the nomination would help get Cookie’s cause out there, help get it more well known,” Kyle said. Alistair’s role as an Australia Day Ambassador means he will be working Australia Day helping to give talks and hand out citizenship certificates in various communities around Victoria.

OPEN 7 DAYS
Rugged up for a dry and sunny second outdoor movie night.
Barbara and Graeme Schilling of Ocean Grove.
Fun night at the movies OCEAN Grove’s outdoor movie night was the latest event to miraculously survive our wet summer. The second of this year’s season of two – the children’s cartoon Up – proved a winner for a young audience that started taking its place a full two hours before the show started. Those that arrived early got the chance to njoy the sunshine, have something to eat and even get faces painted for free.
Organiser Michele Mitten said she was thrilled with the first event of its kind and hoped it would become an annual event. “There was a wonderful community feel, it seemed to bring everyone together and the numbers were perfect, she said. “It’s great being able to give something back to the community and visitors by way of a free event. Huge thanks to the sponsors and advertisers of the event.”
The major partners were the City of Greater Geelong, Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, the Voice, and OGAN, CJ Keane provided free face painting and sponsorship. Thanks also to the on-screen advertisers Ocean Grove Pizza, Bolzano, Barwon Coast, Club Grove, Ocean Grove Hotel, KYO, Prestige Jayco, Hotondo, ANZ, Splish Splash Auto Spa, The Dunes and the Mex.

Rain, rain go away ... THE town has recorded its highest daily rainfall since March 2010. January 14 has been our wettest day this year with 24mm recorded at the Ocean Grove CFA on Shell Road. Rainfall tallies from different parts of Ocean Grove have varied during the week beginning January 7, with a difference of up to 30mm. Bill Sommers lives in old Ocean Grove and recorded 126mm from January 7 to 14. “It’s the highest reading we’ve had since I’ve been in Ocean Grove; about eight years now,” Bill said. He said that he had avoided any
flooding from the rain because he lives on a hill. “I’m lucky because I’m up high and my land slopes away quickly,” he said. John Wynn, from Wynndean Holiday Park, records rainfall in their camping ground near Ocean Grove Main Beach. They recorded 94mm in the week of January 9 however John said the rainfall did not flood the park and campers stayed dry in their tents. “I think most of the campers found other things to do during the week,” John said. camping numbers and said many people may have gone home to wait out the weather before coming back. “I think it’s a matter of the caravans are
here but the people aren’t. There aren’t any vacancies in the park though,” Bob said. Meanwhile, the UN’s World Meteorological
Organisation has confirmed that 2010 was the hottest year on record, showing a significant trend towards global warming and contributing to unusual
weather around the globe. The average global temperature was 0.53 degrees higher than the previous average from 1961 to 1990.

Boatshed Family in worst hit areas band photos FORMER Ocean Grover Simon Christian has spoken about life getting back to normal in Brisbane. Simon who moved to Queensland two years ago is fortunate to be living in Ashgrove, one of the higher suburbs in Brisbane. Ashgrove is 7km out from the flood hit city but even there it is impossible to escape the effects and he needed to help protect his workplace, still 2km from the flooded CBD. “We had to sandbag the shop in Fortitude Valley,” he said. “It got pretty close. It was pretty scary. I went back to Ocean Grove for Christmas and it hasn’t stopped raining from the time I got back in the New Year. “Everything is pretty much open now but the supermarkets are pretty empty and we haven’t had milk for a week.” However, Simon said that the disaster had brought people closer together. “Everyone has been helping out, people in suburbs not affected have been helping mates out with things like electrical appliances and things like that, just to get them back on track.” Meanwhile Simon’s father Phillip has had the worry of several family members caught in some of the country’s worst affected areas. Of his three brothers, Stephen is in Toowoomba, Queensland, which was hit by some of the worst flashflooding, another, Max, lives in Kerang where he is an SES volunteer in the thick of protecting a straining levy bank and a third, David, works for the DES and was one of 40 employees who volunteered to go to Kerang to help in the effort to save the town from being inundated.

If that wasn’t enough, Phillip’s birthplace Warracknabeal, has also been under severe flooding threat. Max told the Voice that resources had been stretched but the effort by those working to protect the township of Kerang had been phenomenal. The town had become an inland island surrounded by water. “There has been a power of work gone into saving the town, an absolutely amazing effort by volunteers in town and out of town. People have come from as far away as Cann River, Phillip Island and Wangaratta, from all over the place, people who I haven’t seen for years, have come back to help.”
THOSE who have lived in Ocean Grove for the last 20 to 30 years will be well aware that the Boatshed at Ocean Grove Hotel otherwise known as the Collendina Pub - has played host to some of the great Aussie bands. Here are a few of the great shots taken by local Kerrie Bedson when Australian Crawl played in the 80s. Kerrie also saw Inxs at the venue. Verses visit
The Verses are set to play the Barwon Heads Hotel this week. The band, which is a stunning collaboration between contemporary singer/songwriter duo and siblings Ella and Jesse Hooper, formerly of multiplatinum recording act Killing Heidi. Together they have spent the past four years crafting ‘Seasons’, a mature, adventurous and personal record of warm roots rock and alt-country balladry that is inspired by the music they grew up with. Just last February the couple was in a Los Angeles recording studio working with Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Paul McCartney, Latin Playboys). The brother and sister from Violet Town in rural Victoria will play the Hotel on Friday (January 28).

Garden favourite is honey sweet
THE New Holland honeyeater is widely seen in Ocean Grove, in gardens and parks. This bird was the first bird to be scientifically described in Australia, in 1781. This attractive, small (18cm) bird has a black and white body (but doesn’t barrack for Collingwood), with a yellow wing patch and yellow tail feathers. The sexes are identical in looks but the females are slightly smaller. Young honeyeaters have browner feathers, and have grey eyes and
whiskers near the nostrils. This honeyeater is found throughout the southern half of Australia, from Brisbane all the way to Perth. They are found in urban gardens, forests, and woodlands. They are very social and mix with different species of honeyeaters. The bird is quite distinctive and vocal, and groups constantly make chattering notes. If danger, such as a bird of prey, approaches, a group of honeyeaters will join together and give a loud alarm call. The New Holland

honeyeaters are often seen darting around plants eating the nectar of flowers. They are very active, rarely remaining in the one spot for too long. They also eat fruit, insects and spiders. Their tongue can reach beyond the end of their beaks to enable access to nectar deep within flowers. The breeding season is any time of the year,
but mostly in summer and winter. The New Holland honeyeater nests right through the year. In the summer it builds its nest inside bushes to keep cool in the shade and in the winter it builds on the outside of a bush to catch the sun. The bird constructs a small, cup-shaped nest from grasses and bark. It uses spider webs to hold

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast, your local Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads coastal foreshore manager, and operator of the Barwon Heads Caravan Park, the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove and the Riverside Camping Area welcomes all our visitors to the coast for their summer holidays. Play it Safe by the Water Always swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove and 13th Beach where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol. Always take note of the Beach Safety Signs at beach access pathways advising generally of local beach conditions and the nearest patrolled beach. Additionally lifeguards are for the third year patrolling the beach to the east of RAAF’s (18W) on the Ocean Grove Spit until the 26th January and we are pleased to provide the funding for this essential service. WE are also providing funding for an additional lifeguard at Ocean Grove. Free Shuttle Bus We hope you made good use of the free shuttle bus that ran over peak summer co-ordinated by Barwon Coast with financial support from Coles, City of Greater Geelong, the Echo, Press Here and the local business associations in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Over 4,000 people did and that made a difference to traffic volumes and chasing that elusive car park at the beach or the shops. Dog Free Beaches Please remember that over the peak summer, the dog free beaches declaration come into effect with dogs prohibited along the entire Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), and the Barwon River beach from 18th December to 31st January From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina dogs are permitted under
the nest together. The nest is placed in thick bush or in a tree, at a height of up to six metres. Two to three eggs are laid at a time, and both sexes feed and care for the chicks. I have a family of New Holland honeyeaters in my garden (one of them is pictured). Yesterday one of the birds flew into the
balcony wall and was lying upside down in the backyard with blood on it’s beak. I thought it was definitely in honeyeater heaven, but I picked the bird up and realised that it was still alive, so I made it a small nest. It was a tough bird as about an hour later it managed to fly off. It must have had a huge headache! By Jennifer Carr
PARKS Victoria is working with its neighbours to deliver a fox control program on public and private land across the Bellarine Peninsula to safeguard wildlife and the natural environment. The Bellarine Ark project aims to engage local land managers with property owners to reduce fox populations to protect fauna and shore birds at Lake Connewarre and Swan Bay. Parks Victoria is laying baits containing 1080 poison at areas of known fox habitat within 5km of Lake Connewarre and Swan Bay until February 3. Signs are posted in the baited area. Pet owners are advised to keep animals under effective control, muzzled or away from the poisoned areas because dogs and cats are susceptible to 1080 poisons.
effective control. Effective control is when your dog is in your sight and can be controlled by voice command. If your dog does not respond to your voice then it is not under effective control. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Do the Right Thing - Use the Right Bin Whether its food packaging, plastic bags, cigarette butts, dog poo or syringes, litter is one of the most visible signs of pollution. At Barwon Coast we have made a substantial investment in locating recycling and general waste bins throughout our coastal reserves and caravan parks however our recycling programs and waste collection is only effective if used correctly. Bins with yellow lids are for recycling of appropriate materials only. Unfortunately these bins are sometimes contaminated with items that should be placed in the general waste bins and in such cases all that bins contents have to go to the tip. The biggest contaminant in recycling bins are the PLASTIC BAGS some people use to carry their recycling to the bin but then unfortunately put the bag in the bin Next time you put out your recycling, remember to make sure there are no plastic bags in the recycling bin. Plastic bags can be recycled at most supermarkets. Let’s 'Do The Right Thing and Use The Right Bins”. 13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast has just released a draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists. Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC. Details are available on our web site www.barwoncoast.com.au We are looking for submissions regarding this proposal by 11th February 2011. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager

RED HOT: Ray Bedson developed a love of fast cars at a young age and has pursued his passion ever since.
Car lover doing his bit for the future I GREW up in Geelong and went to Herne Hill Primary School and then Bell Park High School. My teenage years were great fun hanging out at places like the Golden Cue, Driscoll’s Funarama and regularly at McCann Street on a Sunday night. However, by the age of 18, work took me to Melbourne and I lived in several different suburbs before moving back to Geelong. Twelve years later it was time to find a new home. My first memories of Ocean Grove were back in the late 1970s when friends and I used to go down to Raffs Beach to play WSBC (World Series Beach Cricket). We dressed up as different nationalities and played a one-day match. This was all good fun until it started raining and we got stranded on the Wallington Road because of flood waters. I recall watching a VW lose its hubcaps getting washed off in the swirling flood. In 1997, the year I got married, we moved to Ocean Grove. We wanted to pursue a sea-change lifestyle. It seemed to be a

It’s a bit like restoring old houses and antiques; it’s like handing a piece of motoring history to the next generation. However, along with the respect for the past, is a desire to improve the performance, handling and braking. The Geelong Street Rodders host the Queenscliff Rod Run and I am on the organising committee. This is in the first week of February each year. With the upcoming 20th ASRF Nationals in Geelong this Easter I will also be heavily involved. Ocean Grove is a great place to live with a vibrant main street, scenic beaches and a great sense of community. I’ll still be here in 10 years and my hope is that it doesn’t grow too fast until improved facilities are available for all of the new families that will be arriving all the time.

Ocean Grove Tennis Club Veterans Bob Hollow, Doug Twaits and Dannie Aitken.
Veterans having a ball TENNIS, barbecues, golf, drinks, Dean Martin music and - most of all - fun, are the key ingredients which Ocean Grove Tennis Club Veterans President Heinz Dahl attributes to the long lasting success of the group. With the largest veteran group in Victoria at over 80, the Ocean Grovers believe ‘having a good time’ is what it’s all about. The group was started in 1989. The foundation member was Ms Linda Dodd. Some of the players from the early years were Gordon Christian, Betty and John
Tolhurst, Merle Murry, Vivian Wells, June and Brian Quigley, Nancy and Lance Griffin, May Bissett, Peg and Owen Bannister, Gwen Bell and Tom Wells. Some are still playing today. When asked to describe the culture of the veterans club, President Heinz Dahl has a wealth of information to share. “It’s just a great club because everyone has a good time and we mix well with all the standards”. “On Wednesdays we have a drink after a few games and Fridays is Pizza or barbecue
night”. But it’s not all fun and games for the veterans with three members competing in the Warrnambool country week and placing an admirable third. The group also has two members who participate in the Saturday pennant competition and a further four that fill in. “We have a few players who participate across a few of the levels and compete very well.” Australia Day won’t go unnoticed with the veterans group as they plan a ‘Sam
Kekovitch lamb cook-up’ to celebrate the big day. “We are starting to add a few more social occasions to the calendar and the ‘cook-up’ is just one of those events,” said Heinz. Anyone wishing to join can call into the club any morning, or phone Heinz or Bev on 52255 2673. The cost to play as a visitor is $3 per day for three days, a membership must be purchased for the Ocean Grove Tennis Club $90 and covers insurance. By Daniel Carty.

Nathan Walter was solid in the middle order, knocking 27 for Cobras A Grade at Wallington .
Premiers struggle to regain form COLLENDINA A side fell well short of Wallington’s first innings total of 148 in their round 8 fixture, writes Daniel Carty. The Cobras could only manage a meagre 84 in relatively good batting conditions last Saturday at Wallington Recreational
Reserve. A solid knock from middle order batsman Nathan Walter provided the only resistance for the visitors as he amassed an impressive 27, whilst 16 not out from Curtly Balshaw steadied the ship momentarily, but wasn’t
enough to atone for the top order batting collapse, with the top five batsmen providing only 30 runs between them. For Wallington, Damien Biemans was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/25 off his 21 overs, whilst youngster Matthew
Shipsides showed his worth with the ball taking an impressive 3/18 off 15 overs. Wallington will hold bragging rights after the 64 run victory, until next time at least. Collendina had a bye in round 9.
“Our aim is to get you pain free and healthy in the quickest time possible”.

A century for Cam A BRILLIANT 105 from Collendina B’s opening batsman Cameron Kavaliunas provided some joy for the locals in an otherwise disappointing game for the Cobra’s as Wallington took the points in the hotly contested local derby last weekend. With an average of just 7.6 leading up to the season defining innings it’s no wonder how relieved the 24 year old was after the game. “I was just hitting them really well and I felt good about my batting the whole day”. Small but effective cameos from Cal Hodgkinson (10 runs) and Paul Liistro (15 runs) were critical in the makeup of Kavaliunas’s shackle breaking innings. “It was really good to have a few of the guys stick in there with me, Cal and Paul really helped me by holding down an end and creating a good partnership with me”. Kavaliunas’ momentum will have to hold off for another week as the Cobras have a bye before taking on Jan Juc on the fifth of February. Collendina B Grade had a bye for round 9. With Collendina’s A and B sides enjoying the week off, all the focus was turned to the COBRA’S TWO C GRADE SIDES. Collendina #1 travelled down the coast to take on the 10th placed Jan
Cameron Kavaliunas.
Juc in a battle of the lower reaches of the ladder. The home side won the toss and elected to bat in swirly but clear conditions ideal for setting a decent total. Through a dangerous spell of 3/26 from Patrick Malone, Robert Procter’s 3/24 and Cian Murphy’s 2/13 the visitors were able to keep the home side to a reasonable total of all out for 150. The Cobra’s were forced to face 4 overs before stumps, and unfortunately lost opener Nick
Binder for 0 during the unsettling period. Ashley Denneman (2 not out) and Matthew Stammers (0 not out) will be looking to guide the Cobra’s to victory in the second and final day this Saturday afternoon at Bellbrae oval. Collendina’s #2 side took on Portarlington at the Snake Pit with a decent crowd on hand to see the Cobra’s bat their way into a match winning position. After winning the toss and putting themselves into bat, the Cobra’s came out and piled on 6/207 off 60 overs to drain the confidence of their Portarlington opponents in one foul swoop. 49 from much maligned opener Blair Hodgkinson set the tone for the home side with Julian Wilson (39 runs), Andrew Devereaux (33 runs) and Tim Devereaux (26 runs) following suit. The Cobra’s total of 6/207 will be a tall order for precariously placed Portarlington who sit seventh on the ladder and are even on points with sixth placed Drysdale #1. Collendina’s D side went down to Queenscliff at Point Lonsdale Recreation Reserve by 114 runs. The Cobra’s were chasing the monster total of 242 for victory, but fell well short only producing 128 runs off 38 over’s. Bart Sagor top scored for the visitors with 35. By Daniel Carty.
Sports briefs Cobras AGM Collendina Cobras Football Club is holding its AGM at the clubrooms in Minerva Close on February 6 from 11am. The club would love as many parents from all age groups to get involved in some capacity this year. They are also looking for coaches in all age groups.

A fine caught and bowled by Peter Hart sealed it for Grove.
Michael Kenneady took 2/17 for Grubbers.
Grove to face Port’ GRUBBERS took a large step towards defending their Twenty-20 title with a comfortable 77 run victory over neighbours Collendina. The sport provided an entertaining and sunny night for the many revellers who ventured down to the “snake pit” on Friday evening.
Grubbers were first to post a total, and they did so in style with 7/165 after their 20 overs. Dave Turner exploded with a quick fire 51 whilst Patrick Kuipers was a solid contributor with an impressive 37. Popular local Peter Hart kicked off a fine match with a handy 25 batting down the order.
winning as the Grubbers attack tore through the Cobras openers with aggression and precision. Captain Lucas Cameron starred with the ball taking 3/15 whilst the ever reliable Michael Kenneady took 2/17 off his four overs. Grove will play Portarlington in the semi finals. The date is yet to be confirmed.

Reeling at 7/90 the Grubber’s looked gone until regular bowler Daniel Roddis came to the crease and top scored down the order with a stellar 35 from number 9, whilst openers Mark Richardson and Troy Wiseman set up the innings strongly with 24 and 32 respectively to see off the new ball and give the middle order the best Vodafone is one of Australia’s licensed mobile telecommunications chance to set a competitive carriers and is introducing UMTS 850 MHz data and voice services to total for next week. Hart commented on his batting and the overall success of the Grubbers lineup, in this form of the game. “I was pretty happy with my 25; they seemed to be coming off the bat alright. Dave (Turner) batted really well and it helped set up our massive total”. Collendina never looked like

dragged them to the solid first innings total. “ We were really struggling at 7/90 until Dan (Daniel) Roddis came in and held us together for most of the overs. I was happy with how I batted and was just glad we could get to a competitive total. The match continues this Saturday with Nick Lewis, Dale Savage and Daniel Roddis the keys to the Grubbers chances of extending their two game lead at the top of the table. Newcomb currently sit in third and victory would edge them just one game behind Ocean Grove, heading into the business end of the season. Both of OCEAN GROVE’S C TEAMS grabbed first day honours in their respective fixtures on Saturday. Ocean Grove #1 took on Newcomb at Ervin Reserve -2, whilst Ocean Grove #2 battled Drysdale #1 at St Thomas Catholic Primary School in beautiful conditions for cricket. Grubbers #1 gave Newcomb a

cricketing lesson in their first of two days, knocking them all out for just 71 before ending the day 5/134. Alan Bate starred with the ball taking 3/17, whilst John Murphy took a well earned 2/14 off 11 overs, to desecrate the home side’s batting order on a perfect batting day. In reply to the meager 71 set by Newcomb, the Grubber’s played as if it were a twenty-twenty fixture, hitting an amazing 134 off just 16 over’s. Number five batsman Tony Laverty led the charge for the Grubber’s hitting an unbeaten 50 including an array of impressive strokes. Ocean Grove #2 side found themselves involved in a highly important mid season fixture against Drysdale #1, due to the fact both sides sit just in the top six, the Grubbers just one game ahead of Drysdale. After winning the toss and electing to bat on a day that seemed to be perfect for batting, it was all up to the Grubbers openers to set the tone, and they did in style. 55 from young gun Aaron Hapgood sparked the visitors into action. 20 from Thomas Kent accompanied with 16 and 17 from openers James Bourke and Nathan Madden respectively pushed the first innings total to 143 all out, a total that should give the Grubbers bowlers something to defend going into the second day, this Saturday. Ocean Grove’s D grade side came out on top with nine over’s to spare in their whirlwind encounter with Portarlington last Saturday at Portalington Recreation Reserve -2. After keeping the home side to 134 off their 40 over’s, Ocean Grove cruised to 6/144 off only 31 over’s with Kane Montgomery the hero smashing 63. 32 from Craig Stevens and 2/22 from Peter Fankhauser were the other notable contributions in the confidence boosting win.

OCEAN Grove’s A grade side showed why it’s one of the most feared batting lineups in the league, as they motored to 239 at home to Newcombe. Just as impressive was the comeback after being shell-shocked early at 2/0. In form opener Dean Gills saved the day for the home side with a stunning 93 after Patrick

Kuipers and Lucas Baulch both fell for ducks in the opening few overs. Solid 34’s from both Corey Bampfield and Darren Craig in his first game for the year, pushed the Grubber’s past the 200 milestone and into a score that will give club President Lucas Baulch much to
smile about. “(I was) Very happy with the total, obviously Dean Gills batted brilliantly and I thought Corey Bampfield returned to form with a very good 34.” “Darren Craig in his first game for the season batted sensibly and perfectly for the situation the game was in”. With Newcomb sitting fourth
and Ocean Grove fifth on the ladder separated only by 3 points, it is vital for the Grubbers finals chances that they take the points in this hotly contested fixture. Ocean Grove’s bowlers will look to topple Newcomb as quickly as possible to secure the much needed points this coming Saturday at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve.
