SOLD $2.6M Ann Kerley’s ‘forever view’ clifftop home goes under the hammer ANN Kerley’s home on the cliff above the Esplanade was sold by auction at the weekend realising a whopping $2,610,000. The 3-bed Ocean Grove property was put up for sale following Ann’s sudden death last June and had been in her family for more than 70 years. Ann and the Kerley family had occupied the old boathouse on the east of the Look Out since it was moved there in 1937. Her mother’s family, the Mundays, actually owned the

boathouse back in the 19th century when it was located at Barwon Heads with 60 other boathouses. Bidding started on time at 2pm on Saturday with more than 100 spectators sat on the sloping lawn beneath the property. Real Estate Agent Damian Cayzer described it as a ‘beachfront home with a forever view’. “It’s one of the most outstanding views available,” he said. “It’s abolutely blue ribbon”. Continued page 3

FIREFIGHTERS joined SES crews and paramedics in rescuing a 50 year old builder who had fallen down a lift shaft on an Ocean Grove construction site. The man was taken to Geelong hospital with head and chest injuries but they are not believed to have been serious. The accident happened just

before 4pm on Friday January 15 at the site on the corner of Hodgson and Orton streets. It is believed the man fell between 1m and 2m and was conscious and breathing while crews assisted him. He was fitted with a neck brace and dealt with as if he had spinal injuries. A spokesman for WorkSafe, which

will be investigating the cause of the incident, said the accident should highlight that falls even from relatively small heights can still lead to serious injuries. “The message is people working above ground level need to anticipate the possibility of a fall. “Falls were the single biggest cause of death last year.”

OCEAN Grove’s City councillor is hopeful that replicating the approach that delivered a swimming pool to the town will do the same for the long discussed plans for a new sports precinct at Shell Road. Consultants are about to go public with a plan for moving sports clubs at the Memorial Ground to a new home at Shell Road. The land that is home to the netball courts on Draper Street would be sold off in the land transfer. Local councillor Jan Farrell explained where the project was up to. “For a long time people have been talking about moving the sports clubs to Shell Road. That is in this strategy. “The strategy and main focus is to move the footy, cricket and netball to Shell Road. “(It is) also to put in a master plan for the Memorial Ground and Collendina and how that fits in the structure. That’s what the project is about.”

Cllr Farrell said the project was about community engagement and the fact that the council and consultants had been working with clubs to get this far. Cllr Farrell said the scenario was that the memorial ground, the current home of Ocean Grove Football Netball Club, would become a junior ground and that those senior clubs would move to Shell Road where purpose built facilities would allow building sharing with Surfside Waves Soccer Club. Those clubs would have their own areas of the building, however, the building would be flexible in that the spaces could be joined as one in the event that the clubs wished to stage a combined function. Cllr Farrell also revealed that the trade off would mean the netball court land between Draper Street and Ashbury Street would be sold off. However, she said that as this was not public land there was no loss of public space in the entire project.

Earlier concerns from the netball club had been that the new Shell Road plan only envisages four courts when the club is already short of courts. However, Cllr Farrell said the plan recognises this and the number of courts would be increased and that courts at Bellarine Secondary College could be utilised in the short term. The Voice spoke to some of the sports clubs and they said they were happy that the council appeared to have listened to what they had to say. They hadn’t as yet seen the proposed plans or drawings but anticipated a viewing this week. Cllr Farrell said that the project was reliant on three levels of government working together and she said she was optimistic that the project could be delivered within three years. “They are trying to replicate the pool (strategy). It’s about getting the community and clubs on board. We need to drive it. I am hopeful that we will have agreement from all the clubs on this.”

VOLUNTEERS who grafted for months in helping refurbish the Collendina Sports Club have now had to appeal for help after thieves broke in and damaged clubroom equipment. It is understood that the club suffered two break ins, one on Thursday 14 when alcohol was stolen and then three nights later their new plasma television was stolen and the glass doors on the beer fridge were smashed. The club has since sent out an SOS to 300 members asking for help. Committee member Leigh Norquay said that members were disappointed after all the work that had been put in but added that they had had numerous offers of help from people within the community. The break ins unfortunately come just as Collendina Cricket Club prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The anniversary celebrations will be held at the clubrooms in Minverva Road from 6pm on Saturday January 30. A family day will also be held on the following Sunday, January 31, from 10am and will feature a 20/20 match and plenty of activities for youngsters.

CFA call outs OCEAN Grove CFA has attended six incidents between January 8 to 15. As well as the Hodgson Street rescue above, crews attended a called to Stephens Parade in Barwon Heads, a smoke scare on Thirteenth Beach Road, a smoke alarm in Queenscliff, a noninjury car accident in Sheepwash Road, and a power pole fire in Presidents Avenue, as reported in the last edition of the Voice.

Three vie for dream view

The house on the hill sold for a cool $2.610,000. Former owner Ann Kerley was well known character of the town.

ANN Kerley’s home on the cliff above the Esplanade was sold by auction at the weekend realising a whopping $2,610,000, continued from page 1. Estate agent Damian Cayzer of Kerley’s Coastal Real Estate started the bidding at $1.8 million. The first bid came in at $1.850,000 and a vendors bid took it up to $1.9 million. Three bidders – two phone and one in person - and 43 bids later and it was sold for a price matching acreage on the eastern side Port Phillip Bay. Unquestionably one of Ocean Grove’s most sought after properties – agents from her

family’s real estate business went further suggesting the property boasts “arguably one of the finest ocean views in Victoria”. “Set high atop the cliff above Ocean Grove’s beach, this unique beachfront property has until now remained in one family ownership since 1937,” the publicity spiel stated. “The opportunities are abundant, the land size is generous, the views are unbeatable. “Without doubt a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Among those who attended the auction were many of former owner Ann Kerley’s family, including her two brothers Neil and Frank.

They also have a sister who lives in Canberra. Neil who had lived at the house with his siblings and his parents James and Teresa Kerley told the Voice that the house “held some strong memories”. He also explained that the boathouse had actually been transported from Barwon Heads on a low loader being pulled by a team of Clydesdale horses. Many other spectators came to see the auction having known Ann. All of them described her as a wonderful, even eccentric, character. Ann’s main passions had been her Catholic faith and a love of Geelong Football Club.

Unidentified cover. Geelong Council has told the Voice it will send a team to inspect the area.

AN Ocean Grove pensioner says an old unidentified drain cover is a dangerous trip hazard that has already claimed victims. Peter Pape who has only 25 per cent vision says it is difficult to avoid the concrete cover as he walks from his home in Madelely Street through Ocean Grove Park and across The Avenue. Peter, who has lived in Ocean Grove since 1953, says that part of the problem is that a path alongside the doctors car park suddenly finishes and does not link up with a ramp on the park side of the Avenue. “The pit sticks above the ground. I have complained to council and they say it’s

Telecom. Telcom say it’s council. “A couple of weeks ago there was a fellow who fell and hurt his arm, later on I heard he broke his wrist. People with motorised scooters have to drive onto the road to get around it. “When it gets muddy it gets really slippery too. “We just need a proper ramp like the park.” Colin Atkins, president of Ocean Grove Park, said that the existing brick paving ramps around the park were installed by the park’s committee. He supported the idea of improving access from the doctors car park area and said that the park’s group was very keen on improving connections between the town centre and the park.

Shark attack at Boings

A BARWON Heads man is recovering at home after being attacked by a shark while surfing Boings on 13th Beach. He has since had to undergo skin and muscle surgery on his hand but was otherwise unhurt. Local Patrick Lockie, a respected Geelong eye surgeon who is also medical director at St John of God Hospital, was in the water with four other surfers on Friday morning at about 7.30am when he felt a bump on his left leg. “It came towards me and presume it was trying to see what I was and I reached down and shoved it away,” Dr Lockie told the Voice. “I reached down to push it away and it grabbed my hand. It did not really bite it. I think if it had wanted to bite it I would have lost my hand. I pulled my hand away. “It came up to towards me and I tried to sort of kick it away. That’s when I fell into the water. It was only about 10 or 15 seconds but it felt a lot longer. “I had to ask the other surfers

to push my board back to me. I probably could have pulled it with the leash but I just didn’t have the presence of mind to do that at the time. “I’m pretty certain the other surfers didn’t realise what had happened. They carried on surfing.” Dr Lockie said that he was eventually able to paddle in and other locals on the beach were kind enough to drive him home before family took him to hospital. “It was only skin and muscle damage and there was no damage to the tendons. It’s not painful,” he said. Asked about what sort of shark it was Dr Lockie believes it may have been a tiger shark as he did get a good look at its head and has since looked up the description on the internet. The size was also difficult to estimate. “I think its head was two hand spans across,” he said. “I think it was a tiger shark, it was grey and its eyes were on the top of its head.

Patrick Lockie was attacked by a shark at Boings on 13th Beach.

Will he be going back? “The odd thing about it was there were some fishing boats close by. About 100 metres away, which is pretty close for 13th Beach. I can only assume a school of fish had come in close. “I think I will go back in again, but only if there are no fishing boats nearby.” The last publicised shark sighting at 13th Beach was a bronze whaler in December

2007. Whalers are usually sighted close to the region’s shores two or three times each summer. It’s believed the species, which on average grows to about 2.5m and weighs 300kg, swims into the shallows when the water is at its warmest to eat schooling fish such as salmon. • Have you had any sharky experiences on our local breaks? Camped for 60 years CAMPERS come and campers go. But one Ocean Grove holidaymaker can truly be called the number one ticket holder. Glenda Werrett has been holidaying on the spit campsite for 60 years this year. “There have been five generations of us that have been here,” Pointing to a photo of her grandmother, “These are the old vehicles we’d travel down from Geelong in. “We’ve not always been on the same site. We originally began down by the bridge. We were the last camp before the bridge and then they closed that area off. Prior to that my grandfather used to come down in a horse and dray from Geelong. It would take him all day to get down here. He would bring young people from the church, a congregational church in Geelong. And they would camp down

here with the family and then they would pack up and go home and it would take them all day to get home again.” It doesn’t take Glenda that long to get home any more. Glenda and her husband Lyall moved to Ocean Grove 13 years ago but have continued the traditional five week Christmas holiday ever since. Now they take half a day to pack the caravan and just five minutes to travel the 1.5km journey to their holiday destination. Lyall said: “A very good friend of mine who lives across the road is a senior sergeant in the police force and every year when I pack my van up to bring it down here he always says on your way down make sure you pull over and have a rest because you’re in for a long ride.” Glenda said that the biggest draw card apart from the location – ocean one side, river the

other – was the sense of community among other campers on the spit. “We had camp concerts down here quite often. One of the things that I would do here is we’d raise money, like surf lifesaving or when the Tsunami hit we had a huge concert here, we had over 2,000 people came. We raised just over $3,000 that night.” Glenda and her son Chris say they fear

changes proposed for the site may damage that community atmosphere. “You know that you’re safe if you need help there is going to be someone there to help you. It’s just that lovely community feeling.” Chris actually proposed to his wife Kristy on the spit in the middle of winter. Casting her mind back Glenda said there were a few characters along the

way. “Chief Little Wolf, he used to have the hamburger stall opposite us at the end of the bridge. “Then there was old Nancy, she’d been been coming down here for about 70 years. We used to call her old Mrs Ironpants. She was just gorgeous. She was a real character. “The hamburger stall was a long time before the potato seller Jack. He started about 27 years ago. He’d give regular campers free potatoes. He set up a little playground for the kids, a putting green, table tennis for the kids.” When Glenda first came on holiday to the spit she was just 3 months old. “We lived in St Albans Geelong. Dad still worked. He would travel in and out to work so that we could have a holiday. We just had the best time. It was just a great way to grow up, a great holiday.

day in the life - gary stephens

Grove Gazza’s snap happy G’DAY my name’s Gary, most know me as Gaz or Stevo. I’m the guy you might see camped out on the sand with my camera at one of our beautiful beaches or at the footy taking photos or I may have taught you or one or more of your children. I grew up in Williamstown. Like most “Willy” boys I played Lacrosse in winter (and continued to play until we moved to Ocean Grove) and hung out at the beach in summer, where I learnt to surf (not very well) on the sloppy wind swell created by big southerly blows. A trip to the Montreal Olympics during my Phys Ed course developed a passion for two things, travel and sports photography. I purchased my first SLR camera soon after returning from that trip and began to plan many more travel adventures. After completing a Degree in Physical Education, getting married to my wife Maree and beginning teaching, Ocean Grove still played a big part in our lives. Weekends and Christmas holidays spent camping on the foreshore near Raafs. Many school camps at Ingamels and Riverview, teaching sailing, canoeing and surfing. We always talked about moving down but like most things, it took time. Ten years and three kids later we sold up, packed up and moved to the Grove. That was the summer of ’89 and this Christmas sees us celebrate 20 years in the Grove. We love living in Ocean Grove, our three children Trent, Caitlin and Nic all attended OG Primary and Bellarine Secondary College and as a family we have been involved in many of the towns sporting clubs including footy, tennis, cricket, netball, basketball, Surf Life Saving and the 13th Beach Boardriders. Along the way I have developed

my photography skills using the kid’s participation in sport as a springboard. The Grove has a great community feel to it; with many like-minded people who have also made the move to the coast and we have made some wonderful friends like my surfing mates in the OGOG (OG Old Grommets). As a Physical Education and Outdoor Education Teacher my first 10 years at Ocean Grove were spent teaching in Geelong at Bell Park Tech and Western Heights SC. This past 10 years has been at Bellarine Secondary College and it’s been a great school. The students and staff are fantastic, the location brilliant. I’m pretty lucky in that my classroom has included the beach teaching surfing, snorkelling in the many beautiful rock pools, bushwalking in the Otways, canoeing on the bay and even skiing on the high plains, a tough gig (ha)! I’ve always aimed to work close to where I live; it’s great not having a stressful commute and it means I’m able to ride my bike some days. Working close to home also allows me more time at the beach or with my family. Many evenings and weekends have been spent coaching and assisting my kids and their mates in their sporting endeavours. It’s also great being able to see past and present students in a more relaxed atmosphere, at the footy or getting back at them by dropping in on them in the surf. Our family has a strong love and respect for the ocean and through our love of surfing we have developed a strong connection with the 13th Beach Boardriders. I’m currently on the club committee and club photographer. With the images I have taken over the years I have produced several Surf Calendars to raise funds for the club, these are available from

the local surf shops. Whilst the town has grown dramatically over the past 20 years, it still retains that friendly welcoming feel; you walk down the main street and chat or say g’day to most of those you pass, which often makes a quick trip down the street much longer. I love the relaxed coastal lifestyle, the people, the recreational and sporting options available and of course the beach and river, how fantastic. The other great thing about Grove is its proximity to Geelong, anything the Grove doesn’t have, Geelong does and we’re not too far from Melbourne to catch up with the extended family and old friends. There’s not much I’d change about Grove, except for the crowds when the surf ’s good. The beach is probably my favourite place and I’m often down there walking, swimming, surfing, catching up or just looking, there’s just something about the ocean - it’s constantly changing and has so many moods. I would like to see more resources put into developing and maintaining a wider range of recreational options for all residents. I’d like a walking / bike track linking the existing track behind the beach to Point Lonsdale and the Rail Trail to the east and following the Barwon River to Geelong so I didn’t have to ride my bike on the road. I’d also get rid of the no parking signs in Ocean Throughway so I could sneak off to the quiet end of the beach on those hot crowded summer days. The Terrace has changed dramatically since I first started to visit the Grove, Skinners and the old Pizza shop opposite in Hodgson St, the mess it was a few years back when the latest upgrade was being completed. Shopping local is so easy and I really enjoy being able to get everything I need

a few minutes from home. There are some great businesses in town and our three children have had wonderful opportunities and experiences working in many of them, including Adventure Park, Coles, At the Heads, Tonik, Studio Fashion and the Mex. It’s hard to pick my favourite shop in town, I’d have to say I’m probably too well known by most of the take away food shop proprietors for my own good (they are fantastic). I do love popping into the surf shops Murf ’s, The Greenroom, Strapper and Tonik in Heads to catch up on what’s new. I believe the biggest issue to face the Grove in the future is growth. In the 20 years we have lived here the town has about doubled in size. It’s easy to see why people want to live here; it’s such a great place. But our community needs to work on the balance of retaining the positive small town feel, with the beach / country lifestyle without becoming too big, crowded and damaging the wonderful but fragile natural environment. As a teacher for over 30 years, my life has been fairly regulated and I sometimes feel like Pavlov’s dog every time a bell rings, there is much I will miss about teaching – the great students, the fun, my colleagues support and the great outdoors classroom. This month will see me retire from full time teaching so my daily routine is well and truly up in the air! I hope to do some part time work, not too much that it interferes with the amount of swimming, mountain bike riding and of course photography I want to do, there’s just not enough hours in the day! I hope to be able to sneak out for those great uncrowded midweek surf sessions, eventually unload my boomerang kids and Maree and I have many more great travel plans for the future.

A GROUP of Ocean Grove globetrotters recently made local news on their travels in Scotland when the local paper discovered they planned to send a Christmas message home via the town’s public web cam. The Inveruie Advertiser ran the following story... AN AUSTRALIAN family took the opportunity to wish their friends and loved ones down under a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year live from Inverurie Town Centre. Thanks to the town webcam which is located on top of Mitchell’s Dairy on Market Place, Roger and Diane Peedle along with their daughter Sophie and Wes Uldrick dressed up in tinsel and held up festive messages to spread some Christmas cheer - to the other side of the world. The family from Oceans Grove near Melbourne are currently visiting family at Monymusk, along with other family members who have come from as far afield as Canada to have one big Christmas get together. The idea came from Diane who said that it was great way to remind people back home that they are still thinking of them

during the festive holidays. She said: “Wherever we travel to, we always try to find a webcam so we can say hello to everyone back in Australia. “We emailed Mitchell’s dairy to ask them where the webcam was located and they kindly replied to us back saying where we should stand to get the best shot.” The family have been in Scotland for two weeks and Roger said that they are loving the difference in the weather. He said: “It’s cold and snowy but it’s really great! “We are having a good time in Scotland and I have found the people to be very friendly and welcoming and I think that there is a great sense of community spirit in this town.” Mitchell’s Dairy Human Resources Manager David Gordon said that the webcam was a big hit with tourists. He said: We have hosted the webcam in Inverurie for about six years now and we often receive enquiries from visitors to the town aboutwhere the webcam is located so they can say hello and wave to friends and loved ones back home.” See: www.visitinverurie.co.uk * Thanks to the team at the Advertiser for helping the Voice out on this story.

FAMILY and friends paid an emotional but fitting farewell to Daryl Sewell at Ocean Grove’s beach rotunda on a sunny Friday morning in January. It was a place that was important to ‘Big Daz’ and at a time of the day he loved. It would actually have been 5am if he had his way, but 9.30am was deemed the most practical compromise. Daryl was a private person who endured four desperately tough years of illness and treatment without whinging or complaining, explained Russell Armstrong, chaplain at the Andrew Love Cancer Centre. Daryl had asked Russell to speak at his funeral having developed a close friendship with him over the time he had visited the centre. Surrounding his family at the half hour service were a lot of friends, good friends from all walks, from surfing, from cricket and from football and beyond. The Magpie follower was just 47 and was big on his sport. He moved to Ocean Grove from Werribee with his wife Karen and their children some ten years ago where he lived his life to the full. He’d typically say ‘life is too short, so ride a longboard’.

Daryl Sewell. Family and friends got together at the rotunda to say a morning farewell by the ocean.

Daryl was recognised but sometimes confused for Murf as they both used to have the same khaki coloured kombis, Daryl’s ablaze with window stickers. He hit it off with locals, surfing, teaching his kids to surf, and even crafting miniature surf boards for kids of friends. Daryl had a good grounding. As a kid from Heidelberg his family would take off in a wagon and head down to Barwon Heads. His motto was ‘a family that surfs together stays together’. Family was above all the most important thing to him.

Family friend and classical guitarist Markus Schwaiger played during Daryl’s service.

Again chaplain Russell said during the talks they had that Daryl was less interested in what would happen to him, it was rather what would happen to those he left behind. Daryl passed away peacefully on January 10, at home, surrounded by his family, his wife and best friend Karen and his children Jay, Veneita, Jardon and Bryce. Daryl also leaves four grandchildren Chenoa, Aaliyah, Samuel and Mason. After the service Karen explained how grateful she was

that friends had rallied around to help with building ramps, coming around to visit Daryl and their ongoing support. “All I can say is that I hope I can help others out in times like that,” she said. “Some people did not even know him that put their hands up to help. We’ve been very lucky.” The family has asked for donations in lieu of flowers to go to the Andrew Love Cancer Centre. Daryl was laid to rest in Point Lonsdale.

Auction offers up a treasure OCEAN Grove auctioneers achieved one of their highest ever sales this month. Among more than 900 lots that went under the hammer was a Moorcroft Wisteria display vase. It sold for between $12,000 and $15,000 –

- Quality plants at very competitive prices - Large range inc drought tolerant and easy care plants - Regular specials off our already low prices - 12 Sykes Place, Ocean Grove (next to Ambulance Stn off Adco Grove

close to the estimated sale price. The 50cm vase was made in Stoke-on-Trent in England in 1927 and would have been one of a limited edition, probably less than 50 were made. Woodlands Auctions owner Mark Stone said the vase was a rare piece that was sold by a local person and would be staying local. “We get the odd case where an owner doesn’t know the value but the owner knew what it was worth.” The fact that it is so rare reduced the bidding. “It’s not the sort of piece you expect a huge amount of competition, it is a limited market. “(Apart from the Moorcroft Museum) I haven’t seen a vase of that size before. “It’s not every day you

Mark Stone and the Moorcroft Wisteria display vase that was recently auctioned.

get a $10,000-plus piece. That sort of thing does not come along that often. It’s nice that a little community like ours can offer world class pieces –

and that there are some.” Mark said that previous high sales have included a painting last year and an aboriginal plaque which went for $7,500 last year.

The plaque literally came out the owner’s cupboard. The next Woodlands auction is on Sunday January 31.

Building on a bohemian vibe THE Anton Delecca Quartet concert on Friday January 22 was such a success that it has inspired the Voice and the Piping Hot Chicken Shop to develop a jazz program. No longer content to be comparable to Melbourne live music venues, the chicken shop now wants to rise to the levels of the famous music venues of New York. “We have all the ingredients, great musicians, acoustics and audience,” said John Bowman.

The band was so appreciative of the audience and the venue that they plan to return bi-monthly and to use the shop as a warm up venue for the Melbourne Jazz Festival in May. “It is a great opportunity for our eager, dedicated young musicians to study highly decorated musicians up close and to experience the free wheeling bohemian vibe of jazz,’ added John.

Lunch & Dinner THE Rusy’s may now be looking at the end of April before they take the next step in their amazing Battle of the Bands experience but that hasn’t stopped them moving. The band recently held a jam packed CD launch at the Zebra Bar and made over 50 sales that afternoon and they’ve been gigging in Geelong at the Audi Geelong Yachting week. The band, which is Beau Torrance guitar, lead vocals, Matt Blach - drums-

percussion, Vocals, and Lachie McKiernan - bass guitar, vocals, had been due to jet out this month for the Global Battle of the Bands in London having won the Australian title. However, issues with sponsorship deals have meant the contest has been rescheduled for April 27. It’s worth waiting for though – the first prize is a useful $100,000 recording and development package, cash and a UK tour. The new CD is called Don’t Ask Me.

Ducks swim again in big birthday bash

Yellow ducks will race on the Barwon River for the tenth year running as part of Barwon Heads’ annual Festival of the Sea. Ducks went on sale on Saturday (January 23) at the Barwon Heads community market as well as other locations. Festival organisers are looking forward to a bumper event as the festival celebrates its 10th birthday. Festival president David Littleton said the tenth annual Festival of the Sea would be a bumper event, maintaining a strong focus on arts and the environment. “This year’s festival will see the biggest yet range of environment activities and displays starting in the middle of the week, historical and natural history displays at the Lobster Pot on the Sunday, arts events commencing with the quilters on the weekend of Friday March 12 and culminating in a range of activities on the foreshore on Sunday March 21. “Also on the foreshore we will have more than

Clubs meet

ever before in the way of kids activities, food, wine, market stalls, displays, music and dancing with the skate park crew running a skate competition in the Village Park with music on the Saturday afternoon,” Mr Littleton said. The Community Garden will also be having a range of activities including a harvest breakfast and veggie swap market on the morning of Saturday 20th plus the Barwon Heads Skate Park’s ‘SK8 Jam’ in the afternoon. And the Duck Race will this year feature a record field. “There are hundreds more ducks training as you read this at a secret out of town location. You can buy yours (and give it some hard training) from this week¬end,” Mr Littleton said. Ducks will be dropped from the Barwon Heads bridge at 2.30pm on Sunday March 21 and the owner of the duck that arrives first at the jetty will win prizes to the value of $3000. For more information about the Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea visit www.barwonheads.net.

Hardy crowd

Ocean Grove’s Music Festival was more spring than summer as nature threw everything at the organisers. Wind, showers, sunshine and hard rain - but all through it the crowd just kept coming back for more. By the end of the night revellers had their respite and took to the streets as they bopped with Chubby Rae and the Elevators.

RAIN, hail or sleet couldn’t have kept me away from seeing great music at OG on the weekend. The masterful Geoff Achison was my drawcard in the early evening but from what I hear, there were some great sounds before that. Caught the last few songs of Suspicious Aloysius. A really tight sound with a ‘Lisa’ on sax and Murphy singing with real conviction. The layers and depth to their sound was great. What an honour to hear Achison solo; it makes you hone in on the brilliance of his guitar playing. He can take well known songs and place his own original chord interpretation to them. Watching his fingers is a test of

concentration. The highlight was his ode to the railways with him creating amazing mechanical sounds. Sheer brilliance! Local band, Sambrose didn’t let the weather worry them, and lead singer, Sam Cooper encouraged the audience to warm up by dancing. All I can say is this outfit has gone up a notch in the past 12 months. Whether it’s their choice of music, or their connection with each other as musicians or could it be ah- practice? Duh! Some mean tambourine going down by Ambrose Kenny –Smith for a harmonica man. I looked out into the audience and saw the very talented Beau Torrance

cheering them on as well. Heywhat’s with the air and water in Ocean Grove? So many talented kids playing music in this town! As the dark clouds rolled in and the sun began to set, people got the hint as The Terrace became a dance floor. And what got them up? Chubby Rae and the Elevators of course! Queensland’s warmth has only put more husky intensity to Marissa Quigley’s voice, and it’s grand to see her back in the South with the Elevators again. The impeccable Blues rhythm of Jim Dyson on one of his ‘Deluxe’ is a treat. It’s easy to think Dyson the craftsman of guitars is synonymous with Jim as a

musician. But you could give Jim a Cash Converters five and dime guitar and he’d sound sweet! Loved Marisa’s turn of phrase about the drummer; ‘slapping his bum with a song’. I think you could say you did that for the rest of us Marisa. And where would they all be without the excellent technical knowhow of Huib on sound? Working the desk in trying wet conditions and always with a smile. Bravo Huib! Went home for a good port to warm me up, but the soul was already cosy. Thanks to the organisers. A great night of music and it was free! Jude McCudden

Opening Specials Makeover ½ head foils, full tint, treatment and trim all for $80*

Mini Makeover 5 foils, full tint and blow wave all for $45* Lisa Lange wants to offer a one stop shop for house design and planning.

Dzined for simplicity LISA Lange, who many of you will know from the Surfside Centre, has recently started a business in Ocean Grove called Step One House Dzine. The aim of this business is to provide a link for the person who does not know where to start designing/planning a house to taking the final house plan draft to the Building Practitioner to formulate the Working Drawings and Energy Rating or even Managing the whole Project. Previously, Lisa worked as the Manager of the Surfside Centre for 10 years, where she managed 30 staff members, 29 females and 1 male, and administered 3000 patrons per week. Maternity Leave gave her the opportunity to face her next challenging role of being a mum to 3 sons. With her youngest son attending 4 year old kinder this year and his older brothers at school, she is now ready to reenter the work force and provide a service that she is passionate about. Step One House Dzine has recently been employed to Project Manage the entire development of a Two Lot Sub Division with two 30 sq dwellings. This involves obtaining Town

Planning Permits through to selecting the interior decor and landscaping. Lisa said: “The creativity component of floor plans best serves my passion. This has developed over the past ten years, as my husband, Brett, and I have completed numerous housing projects of our own. “Managing these projects has given me the opportunity to screen and become familiar with reliable quality Surveyors, Soil Test companies, Fencers, Building Practitioners, Trades people, Domestic Builders and Retail suppliers who offer quick after sales service. Most services are sourced from Ocean Grove based businesses,” she said. “Council’s local planning policies, Rescode – Victorias residential design and building codes, and achieving the 5 Star Energy Rating are all factors that must be considered and adhered to when designing new homes”. Step One House Dzine provides the extensive time required to help plan and create your dream home. Consultation is offered for Land Selection, Floor Plan Design for renovations and new houses, and Critical Analysis on already prepared plans, as a second opinion often sights

improvements in design. Soil Testing, Fencing, Interior/ Exterior Design and Full Project Management are also areas offered. For those who have limited spare time or simply dislike shopping, samples and brochures can be resourced and collected for the entire fit out of your home. A Quote will always be provided before work begins. Lisa was a Fitness Instructor at Eltham Leisure Centre whilst operating her own Personal Training business in Brunswick for 3 years before moving to Ocean Grove in 1991. This career path confirmed for her that helping people achieve their goals was the most rewarding aspect of any job. Her history in Ocean Grove extends back to 1991 when she was an owner builder of her first home. In the 1990’s, the Ocean Grove Festival Committee combined forces with Ocean Grove Service Clubs who organised The Horse Races on the Beach. This very popular community event required hundreds of hours of volunteer time from many people. Lisa served for three years with this committee which broadened her network both professionally and socially and cemented even

further the comfort of calling Ocean Grove her home. The steady growth of Ocean Grove encourages infrastructure offering increased choice of where to live, upgraded facilities and a broader range of services. Consequently, local employment opportunities increase across the region. “My husband and I are fortunate to have young children who are thriving from the heavy usage of our local skate-parks, swimming pools, basketball stadiums, the well maintained ovals and the vast array of sporting and recreational programs locally on offer,” she said. “Our beautiful beach and river provides enviable activity opportunities that are easily accessible and clean.” In her spare time, Lisa enjoys Calisthenics – which she has been involved with for over 30 years – having been a representative in the Victorian State Team and she is currently with Ocean Grove Calisthenics College as a volunteer. She frequently works out at the Ocean View Health Club, one of the most thriving businesses in Ocean Grove where there are happy people with healthy minds.

Neighbourhood Watch Ocean Grove Areas 39/43 JANUARY, 2010 NEWSLETTER Firstly we would like to sincerely thank “Ocean Grove Voice” for donating and publishing our Newsletter for Areas 39/43. As notified, in our December issue, due to the non supply of Crime Statistics from Victoria Police and the lack of distribution Volunteers, we are unable to deliver this to your home.

Report from Snr. Sgt. Gary Coombes thefts from vehicles

There has been a spate of thefts from motor vehicles during December - mainly due to the fact that vehicles were left unlocked. Make sure that the vehicle is locked (even if only going to be absent for 5 minutes). DO NOT leave items of interest, i.e. cameras, Ipods, mobile phones, GPS units, handbags, etc. in full view in the vehicle. If you do not wish to take them with you, then leave them locked in the boot.

Party safe

Please contact your local Police Station to register any forthcoming parties. The Police will make every effort to visit your party on the evening. They will assist and provide you with advice and checklists if you are organising a party.

New road rules

From the 9th November there were some changes to the road safety rules. Most changes relate to using mobile phones, visual display units (GPS), child restraints, seatbelts and overtaking. It is worth taking the times to review the changes by visiting the Vic. Roads web site http:// roadrules.vic.gov.au/ home.php Absence from

OCEAN Grove Rotary hosted a group of Rotary supported Thai students and their Rotary friends at an evening garden party. The garden party included about 60 members and guests and was held at member Alison George’s home Visiting Rotarians were from Eaglehawk, Highton and Werribee. Eaglehawk are running a program with their sister rotary club of JomtienPattaya in Thailand to assist a group of disadvantaged – in some cases homeless

– young people stay in Australia for a year and study English intensively. The group that visited Ocean Grove is the fourth group that Eaglehawk has hosted. The link between Eaglehawk and Ocean Grove stems from a long standing friendship between the current presidents of the clubs Rod Greer, Ocean Grove, and John Jones, Eaglehawk. The students vary in their career ambitions. One is working towards studying medicine, another electronics and another beauty therapy.

Rotary gets behind teens

Pe d e s t r i a n crossings in The Parade

When crossing the road in The Parade make sure that you use either one of the two Pedestrian crossings. One is on the North side of the entrance near Coles Store and the other is on the South side of the entrance near The Clinic. It is very hard on drivers when people insist on crossing “willy nilly” along this street.

Hoon drivers

Please make sure that every driver in your family is VERY AWARE of the speed limits applicable wherever they are going. We have seen a large number of young people killed, or badly injured, in accidents over the past few months. It is a worrying factor that alcohol and bad driving are involved in most of these incidents.

Grove’s Rotary President Rod Greer presents Neighbourhood Centre Co-ordinator Nicki Dunne with a cheque for the teen drop in centre.

THE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove has donated cash to ensure all local teens can get access to the Neighbourhood Centre teenage drop in. Last week current Rotary Presdident Rod Greer handed a check for $2,000 to Neighbourhood Centre co-ordinator Nicki Dunne to assist in the succesful Friday evening project. The drop provide a range of actitivies including supervised holidays away with the centre. In recent years they have enjoyed adventure holidays and trips to th Gold Coast.

Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads Lions Club held a wheelbarrow raffle at the Barwon Heads Caravan Park on January 14. The Lions club was ably assisted by Collendina Club President Neale (Wal) Walter, as well as other football and cricket club members and parents. The Lions club ran the raffle to help in raising funds for the new club rooms at Collendina.

Ladybird, ladybird Ladybird ladybird fly away home, Your house in on fire and your children are gone, All except one and that’s little Ann, For she crept under the frying pan. LADYBIRDS belong to the family of beetles known as Coccinellidae. They are found throughout the world, but in America they are known as ‘Ladybugs’. There are 5000 species of

ladybirds found worldwide. I have seen many ladybirds in Ocean Grove, especially on the beach which seems a strange place for them to inhabit! This photo was taken on the beach in Collendina. It was hiding under a cuttlefish bone that we picked up. Ladybirds have red, yellow or orange wings with small black spots on the wings, with a black body and black antennae. The

colours serve as a warning to predators that they may be toxic. They are 1-10mm in length depending on the species. Female ladybirds are larger than males, and therefore are the stronger sex yet again. Ladybirds are considered useful insects in agriculture as they feed on aphids, scale insects and mites. They also eat pollen, sap, and nectar from plants. According to ABC online, an adult ladybird

can consume 2,500 aphids during its lifetime. I think that there needs to be a ‘Jenny Craig for ladybirds’ -they eat a lot. Ladybirds evolve through four distinct life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult stages. Adult ladybirds live for a few months, where the other three stages last for a few days. They are dormant during the winter months. By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST Barwon Coast, your local Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads coastal foreshore manager, and operator of the Barwon Heads Caravan Park, the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove and the Riverside Camping Area welcomes our visitors to the coast for their summer holidays. Play it safe by the water Always swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove and 13th Beach where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol. Take note of the Beach Safety Signs at beach access pathways Additionally lifeguards are for the second year patrolling the beach to the east of RAAF’s (18W) on the Ocean Grove Spit and we are pleased to provide the funding for this essential service. Free Shuttle Bus Leave your car at home or your caravan park and catch the free shuttle bus co-ordinated by Barwon Coast with financial support from Coles, City of Greater Geelong, the Echo, Press Here and the local business associations. The free bus is operating until 26th January commencing at 10am thru to 6pm with an hourly lap of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the beaches. Dog Free Beaches Please remember that over the peak summer, the dog free beaches declaration come into effect with dogs prohibited along the entire Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), and the Barwon River beach from 18th December to 31st January From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is in your sight and can be controlled by voice command. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Riverside Camping Ground Ocean Grove As you travel between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in peak summer you would have noticed the large number of campers that suddenly appear on the river side of the sand spit. This is the Riverside Camping Ground that we operate for 6 weeks a year as an unpowered camping opportunity with over 200 sites. Those who have lived in the region for a number of years may well remember that camping was also allowed on the Ocean

side of the spit but this was stopped many years ago to enable the fragile coastal vegetation to recover. With decisions have been made as to the location of the replacement Barwon Heads bridge and Barwon Water resolving where the new sewer main will cross the sand spit and the Barwon River, we are now able to undertake a full review of the area and have engaged consultants to prepare a draft Landscape Management Plan. The key matters being addressed in the Landscape Masterplan include the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and reviewing the existing provision of amenity blocks with the potential reduction in numbers, more strategically located and more environmentally sustainable. We are also investigating the best linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands . The Landscape Plan will also address the need to provide appropriate access to 18W where Barwon Coast is funding Life Guards over summer, ensuring a patrolled beach adjacent to the camping ground. A draft of the Landscape Plan is available for review by campers and others over summer with comments to Barwon Coast c/- Post Office Barwon Heads 3227 by the end of February 2010. Powered watercraft speed Barwon Coast is working in partnership with the Victorian Water Police and the Bellarine Police to raise awareness of the 5knot water speed limit in the Barwon River Estuary. This speed limit applies to all water craft including Jet Skis I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager

The tour visits Ocean Grove in March. The Bellarine Peninsula Skate Series 2010 is in its sixth year and was first conceived by the City of Greater Geelong’s Youth Development Unit as an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents in a highly skilled sport, in their local community. A champ in the making ELEVEN-year-old Lachlan Smith, a junior member of the Ocean Grove Golf Club, had two rounds of golf last week, playing stableford, and came in with scores of 35 and 37 points. Most golfers would be happy with these scores but what makes Lachlan’s even more remarkable is that they were played over only 12 holes.

His disappointment with his score of 35 was that he scrubbed the par three 11th hole. If his score is equated to 18 holes he would have had scores of 47 and 49 points. Now any golfer will take that anytime. Needless to say Lachlan won the weekly competition. Lachlan, a student at Surfside Primary School,

Junior clinic

last year represented his school in the State School Championships. Playing in the District qualifier at East Geelong, Lachlan qualified in the top six to move onto the second round, which was played at Bacchus Marsh, a course he had never seen before and just missed out on qualifying for the final in Melbourne. Lachlan is looking

EJ Whitten charity golf day Whitten Foundation. The Foundation was established by Ted Jnr in honour of his father. The foundation raises vital funds for Prostate Cancer Research. Commenced as a small event last year, and is being carried on as an annual event in support of the foundation.

This year’s “card” is nearly full with 2 months to go prior to the event, with many celebrity and corporate teams entered. Celebrities will include past and present AFL/VFL players and cricketing greats. This year’s event will be held at Lonsdale Golf Club on March

12, 2010, followed by an evening of entertainment, presentations hosted by Mark Hyland of Bay FM for the participants and their guests. Although the field is near complete, the Organising Committee is still seeking sponsorship, auction items and raffle prizes for the event in

support of this great cause. If you are interested in being involved with this great event please contact Neil Petrie of Drysdale Carpet Court on 419 519 030 or Jeanette Roche, Roche Accounting, on 5256 2764 or email reception.rochecpa@ ozemail.com.au.

Top tennis from Caitlin EXCITING young Grove tennis player Caitlin Lennon just represented the state in the 13/U Girl’s Foundation Cup team in Sydney last week – helping Victoria win it for the first time in the eleven years it has been

run. It was pretty big for the country girls as they got to be presented on the centre court at Homebush - while the Medibank Private Sydney International was on and got to meet and talk

to some of the players. Since returning, Caitlin has played at the Colac Lawn Tennis Club Junior Championships where she helped win the 14/U doubles and earned the runners up spot in the 14/U singles.

The City of Greater Geelong has introduced a cat curfew, which means cats must be kept indoors or securely confined between sunset and sunrise. Implementation of this curfew has now commenced and we will assist cat owners with advice and information. All registered cat owners will receive a letter and brochure outlining the cat curfew requirements next week. This is a key recommendation from the City’s Domestic Animal Management Plan, developed in consultation with residents. Keeping a cat indoors at night helps protect it from cat fights, disease and car accidents. It also helps protect local wildlife. Contrary to popular belief, cats don’t have to roam. In fact, cats kept indoors at night generally live at least three times longer than cats allowed to roam. Cats must also be refrained from roaming uninvited onto other people’s properties during the day. This will avoid situations where cats sometimes destroy plants, attack birds, damage items, defecate in gardens, fight with other cats and create other nuisance situations. For details on cat confinement and how to cat proof your fence or build a cat enclosure go to www.geelongaustralia.com.au or pick up a brochure from any City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre or call us on 52725272.

OCEAN GROVE SPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN The City of Greater Geelong has been working with our consultants Insight Leisure Planning and the Ocean Grove community on a project to determine the sporting infrastructure needs for the area. The plan will direct the transition of sporting clubs currently based at Ocean Grove Memorial Reserve to achieve Council’s long held vision for Shell Road to be developed as the major sporting precinct in Ocean Grove.

The key objectives of the plan relate to the transition of the Ocean Grove Football and Netball Club and the Ocean Grove Cricket Club to Shell Road Reserve. The respective master plans will provide direction on improving the functionality of the reserves, including sporting and playground infrastructure, car parking and traffic management, site access and circulation and will address user safety issues. Improved landscaping will enhance both sporting and informal community use. After an extensive series of stakeholder and community consultations, a draft plan has been developed. The draft plan will be provided to clubs and stakeholders within the next week and then presented for public information during February 2010. For more information, please contact Genevieve Twyford, Recreation and Open Space Officer on 5272 5272 or via email gtwyford@geelongcity.vic.gov.au or contact the project consultants directly Jayson Moran, Insight Leisure Planning on 0413 475 998 or email jm@insightleisureplanning.com.au

MORE than 300 kids enrolled for the 2009/2010 Nippers Surf Ed Programme. The programme consisted of six evening sessions which were held over the summer holidays, with the final session being a mini carnival. Most of the activities are done on the beach and are conducted by qualified instructors. There are also information sessions held in the clubrooms, teaching the kids how to spot such things as rips. At the mini carnival, first, second and third place ribbons were handed out to winners of each age group. Races included boards, a wade and a sprint. At the end of the evening all kids who attended four or more sessions received a certificate. Of course, the most important thing at the end of each session is the sausage sizzle!

Next DSA event day THE Ocean Grove based Disabled Surfers Association (Victorian branch) is hosting its next event day on Saturday February 27 at Main Beach. Come and enjoy a day of fun at the beach and a free barbecue. Participants can register online at dsavictoria@gmail.com or call Paul Van Someren on 0418 514100. The ‘surfers helping surfers’ day starts at 9.30am. For more information call Mark on 0431 601760.

grubbers footy preview

McGregor happy with new age balance

Coach’s Trade happy NEW Grubber recruits got a taste of pre-season training last week as Ocean Grove stepped up its preparations for the 2010 season at Collendina Caravan Park. The two-hour session attracted more than 40 Ocean Grove players in the blustery conditions at Collendina. Prized recruits include Bernie Lynch (Ex-North Shore GFL playing coach), Greg Costello (Former Newcomb and Thomson GDFL premiership player), Matt Guthrie (Belmont Lions), Daniel Maloney (Ex-Geelong VFL listed player), Ryan Baker, Andrew Strachan and Rohan O’Callaghan who joins the Grubbers in a playing assistant role (Swan Hill region). Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor said a major part of the offseason recruiting drive was to appoint players between the 25-30 aged bracket with previous coaching and leadership experience. “Obviously we have lost about a dozen blokes, but we’ve gained about eight or nine in return,” Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor said. “It is good we have got the core of the senior list still playing. “To get five guys at the club that are 25 plus, two of them with (previous) coaching experience, that’s going to help (our younger playing group)

come on a bit quicker. “What we have picked up is what we lacked last year which was 25-30 year old players (and) we lacked some key position players.” Despite the departures of Ben Ricardo (Geelong West) and Kelly Williams (Leopold) to GFL clubs, McGregor said Rohan O’Callaghan’s previous midfield and coaching experience will assist veteran and ball magnet James Dalton, Ocean Grove’s 2009 Best and fairest winner, enormously. McGregor is also excited after bolstering his ruck stocks for 2010, with twometre tall Matt Guthrie, a national swimming title holder, joining Ocean Grove from the Belmont Lions. “He (Guthrie) is a handy pick-up, any one that is six foot and seven (inches) and wants a game a football we will certainly embrace them,” he said. Off the field, the Grubbers wasted no time Daniel Moloney, Bernie Lynch, Rohan O’Callaghan, Matt Guthrie. Front row: (left to right) Ryan Baker, Cameron McGregor (coach), Greg Costello, Andrew Strachan. in appointing Gavin Berry, Recruitment Officer with the Port Adelaide (AFL) Football Club, as its new Chairman of Selectors. “Gavin has a huge amount of experience with Port Adelaide’s recruiting and he will give us enormous amount of expertise and ideas to our coaching department,”Ocean Grove president Geoff Cunningham said. Ocean Grove hosts last year’s BFL premiers Drysdale in Round 1 on Grubbers go through their paces at the Collendina training ground. April 3.

Grove’s previous game against Barrabool was difficult from the start with Grubbers falling to 124 all out in the first weekend after Christmas.
