TV TUNE PLEDGE OCEAN Grove will have new transmission facilities to improve digital television reception within the next 18 months. Voice readers gave valuable feedback (TV Reception Anger, April 6 2011) about the amount of issues with televisions in Ocean Grove. More than 50 people contacted us with problems ranging from dropped and fuzzy signals on certain digital channels to a complete lack of watchable television.
In attempting to right their reception issues, several people said they had spent up to $1000 on new aerials, boosters, televisions and set-top boxes to no avail. TX Australia’s Peter Driscoll said there were definite plans to improve Ocean Grove’s reception problems. “The time frame, at the worst case is within the next 18 month... it’s going to happen, I just can’t say when ” he said. “There are a whole lot of black spot sites that have to be updated before analogue
is switched off.” TX Australia manages, owns and operates transmission services for channels Seven, Nine and Ten and has been in talks with Geelong City Council about improving the reception in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Beangala Ward Councillor Jan Farrell said TX Australia was looking to install transmission facilities for improved digital television reception in areas of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. “The City is currently working with
TX Australia to find the most appropriate location for these facilities,” said Cr Farrell. Ocean Grove receives its digital television signal from a transmitter located on Mount Dandenong more than 80km away. Peter said a new tower would not be built in the area but existing facilities would be upgraded. “There won’t be a tower built in the area,” he said. The Australian Communication and
Media Authority My Switch website allows residents to view the digital signal strength at their address. Areas of Ocean Grove range from variable to good coverage, indicating the town is lacking in full digital reception. Ocean Grove’s analogue television signal will be switched off at the end of 2013. All TVs must be fitted with a digital set-top box or be digital TV compatible. Have your say journo@oceangrovevoice.com

Height control HEIGHT controls have been reinstated by the state government, closing a temporary loop-hole that threatened planning chaos across parts of Ocean Grove. A plus 7.5-metre height control that triggers an automatic hearing for objectors had expired on June 30, 2011. However, the Minister for Planning has now
temporarily reinstated the municipal wide 7.5-metre height control on residential developments following a written request from the City of Greater Geelong. The control has now been extended until December 31, 2012. It allows community members to be involved in the planning process for residential properties that exceed 7.5 metres.
For a time residents in Grove’s Highview Court had been told that their objections to a planned 9-metre property would not receive a hearing. Mayor Cr John Mitchell said he was pleased the matter had been resolved. “It’s a control that’s been in place for more than 20 years and has been widely accepted by the community. “We believe it’s a fair
control that provides an appropriate level of public participation in the decision-making process. “The next step will be a public review to determine if the community believes it should become a permanent control.” Council issues an average of 1522 planning permits per year with about 56 being required because of the 7.5 metre height control.
Holiday visit by author
Fishing with Simmo’
OCEAN Grove’s Phil Hodgkinson and his son Cal (pictured above) recently spent a day fishing in Townsville with former Aussie cricketer Andrew ‘Roy’ Symonds. Phil won the trip after buying a pair of Ugly Fish sunglasses at Bathurst last year. Phil, who is a sales manager with Geelong Homes, said: “It’s not often you get to chase barra with Andrew Symonds or have a BBQ at his house. Cal and I reckon it’s been great.”
Committee meeting
AUTHOR Wendy Orr paid a visit to bookgrove on July 14 to treat Ocean Grove’s junior readers to some holiday story time. More than thirty children and parents came to hear Orr, who is best known for her children’s books, Nim’s Island, and The Princess and her Panther. Nim’s Island was made into a film in 2008 starring Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler. The author was inspired to write the book after seeing a tiny little island when she was nine years old and thinking that she’d like to live on it.

Buyers staying at home MORE Ocean Grove people are staying local when it comes to buying a new house. RT Edgar director Peter Amezdroz said existing Ocean Grove residents made up the highest number of people buying in the town during 2010/11. Peter said last year’s sales statistics showed 46 per cent of buyers were from Melbourne and 30 per

cent of them were existing Ocean Grove residents. “Melbourne and Ocean Grove were both up from the year before,” he said One year on and the number of Melbourne buyers has reduced, while Ocean Grove buyers has increased to 37 per cent. “Maybe with the new estates, people are selling in Ocean Grove then moving there” he said.
Hayden Real Estate’s Hugh McKewan estimated about 50 per cent of the company’s property buyers in Ocean Grove were already living in the town. “They often sell up in Ocean Grove and then build in places like the Kingston Estate,” he said. The latest Land Victoria median housing and property prices have shown just how dramatically Ocean
Grove prices have increased over the last decade. The median housing prices in 2000 for Ocean Grove was $140,300 which has increased steadily in 10 years to $427,500. Brigade night of pride JUST two years after Grove CFA rookie Andrew Cooper was honoured with an Encouragement Award he has scooped the prestigious Firefighter of the Year award. Andrew was presented with his accolade when Ocean Grove CFA celebrated its achievements at its annual dinner at Club Grove on Saturday night. In accepting the award Andrew paid tribute to the late brigade captain Bob Smith who passed away almost 12 months ago to the day. It was a fitting tribute to the ‘the big man’ who was passionate about encouraging and nurturing talent. In a night of awards there were many tributes to Bob, clear recognition that the larger than life character will not be forgotten among his colleagues. In a first for the brigade Ewan Ferguson, chief CFA officer for Victoria, was on hand to make the presentations. He also took time to thank ‘the important people’ in the organisation – the volunteers - and recalled his own memories of Bob Smith.
As well as the firefighter award, there were also a number of other awards bestowed. Mathew Geerings was presented with Captain Steve Gibbs’ first Captain’s Award. Eloise and Craig Cann were jointly presented with the Recruit Excellence Award. Craig also took the Competitions Award. Long service awards were made to John Koronui (five years), Kelly Piec (five years), Anne Geerings (ten years) while not present Alan Bartle, (five years) and Bob Moody (45 years) were also honoured. Leigh Bickley, also not present, was presented with the Brigade Encouragement Award. John Koronui also took out the traditionally humorous Keith Fisher Full Flush Award. During the evening a presentation was made to Terry Brady of Club Grove in recognition of its ongoing support of the brigade and Regional Officer Alistair Drayton presented the brigade with a certificate of appreciation for its contributions to the Good Friday Appeal. Ocean Grove brigade has raised in excess of $60,000 during its involvement.

Trees to be felled AT LEAST 23 mature trees will be felled to make way for an intersection into the planned Oakdene Estate. Following complaints from Voice readers, Geelong City Council has confirmed that the Oakdene Estate Residential Developer has a valid permit to remove trees from the Grubb Road roadside.
The removal of the vegetation will make way for a turning lane into the future residential estate. City of Greater Geelong city development manager Joanne Van Slageren said the tree removal would make way for a signalised intersection and complied with Victoria’s Native Vegetation Framework.
“It was also considered that the proposed intersection design provided an outcome which minimised the amount of vegetation requiring clearance and provided a safe treatment in accordance with VicRoads requirements,” she said. The Grubb Road roadside is covered by a Significant Vegetation
Protection Overlay, however Ms Van Slageren said the permit holder was required to plant vegetation to offset the mature tree removal. “A condition of the planning permit requires the submission of an Offset Plan which is required to show offsets to compensate for the vegetation removal among other things,” she said.

LOCAL musicians will come together to raise money for the third annual Multiple Sclerosis Fundraiser. The fundraiser, organised by musician Bree-arne Chamley, will be held on August 19 at the Ocean Grove Hotel from 4pm. Bree-arne said this year the proceeds from an auction to be held on the night will go towards a new Karingal respite centre Leopold. “We’re focussing on the MS side of things and they have been really good in allowing us to put
the money exactly where we want it to go,” she said. In past years, the event has raised over $5000 and Bree-arne is hoping they can double the amount this year. “Each year we’ve held the fundraiser we’ve managed to double the amount raised so it would be nice to raise about $10,000,” she said. Music acts on the night will include Sarah Carroll, John Stephens and Wag the Dog. Businesses are encouraged to donate items. Phone 0407 095 090 or 0408 495 790.

I HAVE had a heap of my friends contact me through my column and on Facebook this week. I want to say to hi to one of my friends, Billy. He reckons he looks like me; he does a little bit but I am still a puppy so I am smaller. Billy said he loves walking all around town and the beach and river too, but he gets really upset by humans who don’t pick up after their dogs. The best way for humans to remember to carry a pick-up bag is to always
have one tied to our leads, then you’ll never forget. We’d do it ourselves but we don’t have thumbs. Some humans are sneaky and take us out at night and don’t bother picking up. It’s not very cool. Check out this great picture of Diesel. He is a border collie, 12 weeks old and lives with his junior human mates Maddie and Tanner. He LOVES chewing pigs ears. Don’t forget to send in your photos. State view - Lisa Neville MP CFA DINNER
I was pleased to be invited to attend the Ocean Grove Fire Brigade Annual Dinner at Club Grove recently. It is a good time to acknowledge all the hard work and effort of our local CFA members and how valuable their contribution is to the Bellarine community. The evening also presented the opportunity to remember one of those great CFA people, former captain of the Ocean Grove CFA, the late Bob Smith. Bob was a well-known and muchloved local identity and personified the commitment and passion to the CFA demonstrated by so many CFA members. Bob was instrumental
in the establishment of the new fire station in Ocean Grove and it was one of his great achievements to ensure his team was provided with state-of-the-art facilities to support the essential work it does in the community. Ocean Grove CFA is strongly supported by a dedicated team and I congratulate them for their hard work and contribution to the Bellarine community.
SPORT GROUND FUNDING
I encourage Bellarine sporting clubs who want to weather-proof their facilities to contact their local council about applying for funding under the Sustainable Sports Grounds

OCEAN GROVE’S future has been put in the spotlight by a group of passionate locals. More than 50 people attended a forum organised by the Ocean Grove Community Association to workshop issues and solutions to shape Ocean Grove’s future. CEO of G21- Geelong Region Alliance, Elaine Carbines, also spoke about their future vision for the the region. G21 was developed by the five municipalities across the Geelong region to identify, develop and deliver projects. Many of G21’s issues include communication, education, climate change and public transport. Ms Carbines said that public transport around the region was one of the G21’s priorities and while it had improved in recent times, it was still not good enough. “It’s still in my view underdone, public transport across the region,” she said. Ocean Grove Community Association president John Fendyk said it was great to hear the G21 vision so the Ocean Grove community

Maddy causing a stir FROM PAGE 1 OCEAN Grove’s Maddy Griffin has won herself a place in a national beauty pageant final after wowing judges in a Miss Country Girl contest. The 18-year-old earned her place in the national final in Sydney after winning the Geelong regional final ahead of 125 other girls. The former Sacred Heart student and Ocean Grove netballer who is taking a year off before starting a fashion design course at the RMIT said she entered on a
friend’s suggestion. “I went in it for a bit of fun,” she said. “It was a bit of a surprise to win.” Maddy will now be the ambassador for regional girls as she prepares to model on behalf of the Geelong community at the Woman’s Day Miss Country Girl Australia national final in November. Maddy was dressed by Sports Girl for the Market Place Geelong event and walked away with more than $2000 worth of prizes including photo shoots and fashion vouchers.
Maddy said that one of her most exciting prizes will be getting a dress specially made for her for the final. “I’m excited that I get to choose what I wear. I am pretty particular on what I wear and I get to work with the dressmaker and see how she works.” Maddy has chosen a style that is similar to the emerald green satin dress worn by Keira Knightley in her film Atonement. The Geelong event can be seen on Channel 31 tonight (Wednesday, July 27) at 6.30pm.

Riding for kids TOUR FOR KIDS: Ralph Wright is getting ready to ride 850 kilometres for charity.
OCEAN Grove cyclist Ralph Wright is getting into the saddle for a good cause. He’s joining the 850-kilometre Tour de Kids Plus Ride; participants will cycle from Adelaide to Geelong in six stages, to raise money for the Kids Plus Foundation. The event, which is not a race, is in its second year and was started by Tony Peach and John Robertson as a
way of raising money for the foundation, a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2003 by parents of children with special needs. “Tony had been asking me to join for a while and I went to the fundraiser last Saturday and decided it was the right thing to do,” said Ralph, who joins about ten riders who will complete the full ride. A veteran of 25 years
cycling, — he bought his first bike from Hendry’s bike shop 25 years ago — Ralph has competed in triathlons and bike races through the years, and will be a handy member of the team. “I’m also OK with the mechanical side of it too,” he said. “We’re looking for sponsors and I think one cent a kilometre is reasonable,” he said. “All
donations are tax deductible and there are donation tins in Hendry’s, Body Talk and Foam Café.” The organisers are looking for more people to join in for the final 30 kilometres into Geelong, with Cadel Evans a chance to be riding then. “He’s been contacted and is thinking about joining,” Ralph said. To sponsor riders, phone 0431 458 100.
Award floats down river THE conservation group looking after the Barwon River has been named as a finalist in the 2011 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable Cities and Clean Beaches Awards. The Barwon and Moorabool River Reserves Advisory Committee convened by the City of Greater Geelong is one of three finalists in the Sustainable Cities Community Government Partnership category. The Committee was nominated in recognition of the guidance and on-ground works it undertakes to ensure the protection and enhancement of the Barwon and Moorabool River reserves. The Barwon ultimately flows between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads on its way to the ocean. The Committee comprises representatives from the Geelong Environment Council, Friends of Buckley Falls, Geelong Field Naturalists, Heritage Victoria, Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative, Corangamite Catchment Management Authority, Parks Victoria, Department of Sustainability and Environment, community representatives and Geelong Council. The City’s Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cllr John Doull said it was thanks to this partnership approach that a lot of work had been done to conserve these important river reserves. “This partnership was established close to 30 years ago and has achieved a great deal in this time. The Committee has been responsible for enhancing the river reserves through creating lookouts and interpretive signage, developing the parkland, river restoration works as well as master planning,” he said. The winner will be known on Friday 29 July.

day in the life – mark neeld
Living the sea dream I GREW up in Hermsley Road in Curlewis and went to St Joseph’s College from years four to 12. My first memories of Ocean Grove are cycling over from Curlewis (aged 16) to my girlfriend Sarah’s place, going down to the beach and the odd footy game at Memorial Reserve. Sarah and I got married and along with her and our three daughters Lucy, Molly and Alice I moved to Ocean Grove in December 1999. I enjoy living in Ocean Grove; it is a great place to bring up children. It is clearly expanding at a rapid rate I just hope the council/government can keep pace with the infrastructure i.e. the continued development of the Shell Road complex. Expansion and enough schooling resources - both primary and secondary - are the big issues that Ocean Grove will have to deal with in the coming years. I am senior assistant coach at the Collingwood Football Club. I have responsibility for the midfield group as well as the stoppages. A typical week for me is Monday - review day. We have whole team review, and then I take the midfield review followed by watching the individual tapes with
all the midfielders. Tuesdays I watch footage of the upcoming opposition, have a skill session with the midfield group then there is match committee in the afternoon. Wednesdays is the main training session with the whole team and then finalising the team selection in the afternoon. Thursdays are day off. Friday brings the pre-game meetings, whole team and midfield, final training session and then I go to Friday night footy. Saturday is game day and Sundays we have a complete game review and watch the upcoming opposition if possible. I coached the Ocean Grove Football Club for four years (2000-2003) and in that time I was fortunate enough to be a part of four premierships. The girls have all been involved with the netball side of the club from 2000-2010. When we moved down to Ocean Grove in December 1999 we were living across the road from Memorial Reserve. I wandered across to cricket training and asked if anyone had any contacts with the footy club. I gave them a call and the rest is history as they say! I would love to see Ocean Grove be able to enter sporting teams in the highest junior levels in the Geelong area so children weren’t forced
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: Collingwood assistant Mark Neeld loves his work in Melbourne and adores living in Ocean Grove.
to go into Geelong for higher level competition. The best things about Ocean Grove are the beach and the fact that even through population growth it still maintains a community feel. I have great respect for all small business owners; I don’t know how they do it. I could never do what they do! All things move with the times and the same will happen to the Terrace shopping centre. My spare time revolves
around quality time with my family, good food and good coffee. My favourite places are Blue Fin Café and The Dunes Restaurant. With our population growth and demographic shift I am certain new ideas for shops will emerge. If I was Mayor of Ocean Grove I would provide funding for new netball courts and new netball clubrooms for the Ocean Grove Football/Netball Club on day one that I was in office.
Away from work I enjoy having quality family time and travelling. I thoroughly enjoy it when I do, so best not to dwell on the negatives of not having enough time for it! If I wasn’t living in Ocean Grove I would love to be travelling the world with the girls. The beach in summer and the football ground in winter are my favourite parts of Ocean Grove.

set to represent the school while Surfside’s band will also be rocking the stage. The festival will showcase primary and secondary school acts around the region. Young people from the city, coast and country will come together to perform for friends, family and fellow students. GPAC General Manager Jill Smith said the longevity and continued interest in the festival from schools was a tribute to the hard work and dedication of students and teachers. “The GSMMF continues to be a highlight of the Geelong schools calendar:” she said.

The rivalry is still there after all these years. I’ve only missed one battle since the clubs split up in 1964.
I think it’s just friends against friends now.
It’s a great but friendly rivalry. I’ve been to most battles in the last 18 years and they always lift against us.
What rivalry? This is my first game and it seems very friendly. Perhaps the new bridge has brought us together!
The rivalry is still as it always was. Barwon Heads play well against us no matter where they are on the ladder.

The success blend D E L I C A T E S S E N
$11
HOW does it feel and what does it look like when work, life and health are blended together successfully? We often know when something is a success when it feels right – when we feel energised, excited and when we wake up in the morning we pinch and ask ourselves if we are dreaming. Success for many is feeling that all areas of life are working in harmony, where we deal with life’s ‘stuff’ with ease and perspective. It often means we are happy with our work life, relationships and health and vitality. Sarah Valentine started Compose Life in March this year to work with busy women who want to achieve this kind of life. “I work with women to successfully blend the three key areas of life – family, health and work,” Sarah said. Sarah, her husband Craig and their two daughters settled in Wallington two years ago after spending two and a half years living in Darwin. Sarah learnt some valuable strategies to succeed in work, life and health during her time in Darwin. “Craig travels offshore for four weeks at a time so maintaining my work, family and health has been challenging at times. “With pre-school children at the time we were in Darwin and being away from family and friends, I learnt that things changed for the better when I took responsibility for my actions and decisions, only I was

responsible for creating a successful life.” After moving back to Victoria, Sarah saw that there were so many women in Ocean Grove and the Bellarine just like her, running their own business or are in the workforce to some capacity, all balancing the various elements of their life. “It’s often a juggling act. I work with these women to discover what they most desire in their life and we work to successfully bring it all together so that they are open to achieving extraordinary results both personally and professionally,” she said. Sarah meets clients at her home or at a local cafe and many she works
with over the phone. Clients can expect to be taken beyond their comfort zone to a place where real growth occurs and realise that they can achieve an amazing life. Melinda, an Ocean Grove client said: “It was only after my first session with Sarah that I felt that there was any hope. By the end of our sessions I found the confidence to apply for and obtain a job. Sarah has taught me the techniques to achieve my goals, and for this I will be forever grateful.” Sarah is running free Ultimate Living for Women workshops this year and is currently launching a three-month group workshop
program. The program will comprise intimate groups of eight and will explore and uncover what drives us, how we can overcome fears that get in the way of us succeeding and lots of other great tools that work. “For the really busy women or those who prefer to work at their own pace, I have a home study program covering similar topics but all done in the comfort of their home in their own time.” Visit www.composelife.com.au and request a complimentary Steps to Composing Life workbook valued at $49. Tour winner’s plea for road sense AS local rider Cadel Evans made his historic mark on the world stage during this year’s Tour de France he has also offered his support to the Ocean Grove-intiiated Bike Safe initiative. The 2011 winner and Barwon Heads based rider said: “I am pleased to support any initiative
that promotes safety for all road users. Locally, in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, I am particularly pleased that Bike Safe is promoting the message of improved behaviour by motorists and cyclists alike. “Under the Road Rules, bicycles are considered to be vehicles and therefore

cyclists also have rights and obligations.” “Bike Safe’s “Share the Road” message is an effective way of reinforcing respect and consideration for one another. The Bellarine Peninsula is a great place for cyclists and any endeavours to promote road safety can only encourage
further participation and enjoyment.” “I particularly like the positive approach Bike Safe are taking to work together with authorities to effect positive change” Bike Safe’s Al O’Donoghue believes Bike Safe is making headway, but more needs to be done. Bike Safe is
calling on all authorities to work together to form a region wide bicycle network to fix up existing problems and to cope with growth areas like Ocean Grove. “It is good for environmental, health, social and economic reasons, let alone cyclists safety,” he said.

Business women welcome ARE you a woman who runs a small business? Do you live on the Bellarine? If you answered yes then this group is for you. The first networking group for Bellarine women in small business will be launched on August 3. There are many women on the Bellarine Peninsula who own a small business, many operating independently and from home. Isolation is a common feeling among these women — now there is a place to connect with each other right here on the Bellarine. The Bellarine Business Women support and assist each other to flourish in business and in life. Whether you are new to business or have experience the group welcomes you to join in, gain knowledge and ideas, share your opinions and get in touch with other women in business on the Bellarine. “When I started my business from home I looked around for a small business networking group to connect with women on the Bellarine and there was nothing, so I thought I would create one” said Sarah Valentine founder of the Bellarine Business Women. The launch of The Bellarine Business Women will be held at The Club Rooms, Moorfield Park Estate, Moorfield Drive, Wallington (opposite Van Loon’s) on Wednesday, August 3. Refreshments from 7pm. Introductory offer of $15 includes light refreshments. Bookings are essential so contact Sarah on 0412 199 467 or email info@ bellarinebusinesswomen.com.au. A chatty fellow THE white-fronted chat is commonly seen around the Bellarine Peninsula, particularly at Swan Bay, (where this photo was taken), Breamlea and Point Lonsdale at Lake Victoria. Male white-fronted chats have a white face, breast and belly and a distinctive black band across the breast. Females have similar markings but they are a duller grey-brown, and the breast band is not as distinct. Immature birds
have similar colouring to the female, but the breast band is very faint. The white-fronted chat is found across southern Australia, including Tasmania. This bird used to be commonly seen in Sydney, but is now rarely seen, due to loss of habitat and urban expansion. This highlights the necessity to preserve the environment of the Bellarine Peninsula as we are fortunate to
still have areas where birds thrive. Every time I drive down Grubb Road I wish Ocean Grove wasn’t expanding so rapidly. The whitefronted chat lives in marshy areas with low vegetation. They are sometimes seen on beaches and around the edges of lakes. The birds are often seen in flocks of around 20. Towards the end of winter they pair off to breed. The females build the nests while the males guard
the nest. They tend to nest in colonies and build very close to others. They eat insects such as flies, plant bugs and beetles. They are classified as members of the honeyeater family because of their brush-tipped tongue, even though they eat insects, not nectar. True to their name they are quite vocal and chatty birds. OCEAN Grove Coastcare will host a movie night to raise money for an inspirational cause. Coastcare will show the feature the documentary Somewhere Near Tapachula on Thursday, August 4, at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop. The film shares the story of Australians Pam and Alan Skuse who run the Mision Mexico orphanage in Tapachula. Filmmakers Jonno Durrant and Stefan Hunt followed the children’s story and their unique surfing program. Jonno, 29, moved to Ocean Grove at the age of 18 and began his career as an award-winning surf filmmaker off Victoria’s coasts in 2003. After travelling to the United States in 2006 to film their first project, Surfing 50 States,
Jonno and Stefan then ended up in Tapachula, Mexico. “(Stefan) called me up and said, ‘you have to organise some cameras and come down here and film this - it’s amazing’,” he said. The film helped raise more than $100,000 for Mision Mexico and won numerous awards including best feature film at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth. OG Coastcare president Jackie Scally said the group was initially unsure which movie to show for the fundraiser but knew as soon as they found Somewhere Near Tapachula. “We wanted to go with something that had a coastal theme, but also one that had a powerful message to send,” she said. The event starts at 7pm with donations for Mision Mexico welcome.

Surfside Waves results Results July 16-17: Sen Men: Surfside 11 Vs Breakwater (see story below). Sen Women: Surfside 3 Vs Geelong 1 – Fantastic result for the Waves against top of the table and previously unbeaten Geelong. The team is really starting to click as a unit and playing some great football. U/17 Boys: Surfside 1 Vs Breakwater 11 – The boys battled hard against a strong Breakwater team. To their credit they fought out the game and made it difficult for their opponents. The results might not be going the Waves way at the moment but there is no doubting the boy’s commitment and fighting spirit. U/15 Boys: Surfside 7 Vs Breakwater 2 – The boys didn’t miss a beat following the break and continued on their winning ways. Goal scorers: Jacob Nicholsen 4, Isaiah Mujica, Jett Swanborough and Gerrard Hurley 1. Building momentum nicely in the lead up to the finals and are looking like the form team in the competition. U/13 Boys: Surfside 2 Vs Lara 0 – The boys recorded their second win of the season and continued the recent good form. The team is learning a lot and steadily improving
each week against some good experienced teams. A goal in each half seeing them over the line. U/12 Boys: Surfside 6 Vs Lara 1. Boys started off slowly with Lucas Wharmby once again scoring in the first few minutes, side footing a cross from the left wing. Lara fought back and we were 2-1 ahead at half time. Surfside lifted in the second half and kept the pressure on for a good result of 6-1 at full time. Other goal scorers Connor O’Keefe x 2, Rory Dean x 2, Mitchell Wharmby x 1 U/15 Girls: Surfside 2 Vs Kardinia 0. A great effort with fantastic teamwork by all the girls resulted in a win over Kardinia, the current ladder leader 2 -0. The game was very even until Corrin scored late in the first half. The Waves maintained focus in the 2nd half with a goal off the boot of Shamley sealing the game. A stellar game by new recruit Renee and thanks to Carla for magnificent goalkeeping. U/13 Girls: Surfside 3 Vs Bell Park Red 0. The girls were out of the blocks quickly in the first half despite the freezing conditions. A first half hat trick from Frances Dungey with 3 fantastic shots sealed the game. Bell Park put lots of
pressure on in the second half but the Waves defence stood firm. Another outstanding team effort with all players contributing. Small Sided Games: U/11 Red Vs Bellarine Sharks U/11 Blue Vs Bye U/9’s Vs Springdale
Results July 23-24 Another good weekend for the Waves with all teams competing well and playing some great football. It’s pleasing to see the improvement and development of our players. Sen Men: Surfside 7 Vs Deakin Uni 0. A high scoring game with the Waves demonstrating their scoring power and why they sit at the top of the table. Again it was a second half blitz after the Waves led 2-0 at half time. Goal Scorers: Alex Ketchen 2, Alex Munro 2, Andy Black, L McClelland and Stan Nangle 1 each. Sen Women: BYE U/17 Boys: Surfside Vs Geelong Rangers. Score not available at time of going to press. U/15 Boys: Surfside 6 Vs Barwon 0. The wins keep coming for the boys who are firmly entrenched at the top of the table. Goal scorers: Jacob
Nicholson 2, John Black, Robbie Black, Isaiah Mujica and Ben Zebic all grabbing 1. The team is playing great football and working well together as a team. U/13 Boys: Surfside 1 Vs Breakwater Eagles 4. The Waves matched Breakwater for much of the first half and were unlucky to go to the break 2-1 down. Breakwater sealed the game with 2 second half goals but the score line did not reflect a close fought encounter. U/12 Boys: Surfside 0 Vs Surfcoast Blue 0. The team played well on a rain soaked pitch, slugging it out with an upgraded line up against the Surfcoast Blue (Green) team. Surfside was unlucky not to score a number of times with a couple of outstanding saves by the Surfcoast U13 keeper from Rory Dean’s rocketing left foot. The surfside team put a great fight with the defensive line repelling the attack with determination and standing their ground against the revamped forward line of the Surfcoast team. Although we were unlucky not to win the boys earned the respect of the crowd with a result of 0-0 at the end of the game. We look forward to the next match and we will be a contender in
the finals U/15 Girls: Surfside 2 Vs Lara 0. Surfside continued their recent impressive form to record a sound win over Lara. The Waves are making up ground on the league leaders and will be a threat come finals time. Olivia Smith netting twice to give the Waves the points. U/13 Girls: Surfside 3 Vs Barwon 1. The Waves maintain their place at the top of the table following a hard fought win over an improving Barwon. Locked at 1-1 at half time the Waves worked hard in the second half adding 2 goals and holding Barwon in defence. Goal Scorers: Isabel Greer, Caitlin Pickett and Kate Mullaley. Well done to both teams for the fast exciting game. Small Sided Games: U/11 Red Vs Breakwater Blue U/11 Blue Vs Barwon Red U/9’s Vs Barwon Blue The U/11’s and U/9’s enjoyed some great games and have greatly improved their skills since the start of the season. It will be great to watch them move into the older age groups over the coming seasons. Well done to parents and coaches for your efforts up until this point in the season.
Seniors eleven goal feast IN men’s Sunday league soccer division two Surfside Waves have continued their excellent run of form with a sixth successive victory. Waves played at home to mid-table Breakwater in round 10, the team that had previously beaten them 2-1 on the opening day of the season. Although the team line-ups looked similar the outcome this time was very different and few would have expected such a one sided match.
Directly from kick-off the Waves took control and created a couple of good chances to score within the first five minutes, which should have been a wake up call for the opposition. Breakwater persisted in playing with a high defensive line, relying on the off-side trap to capture the Waves attackers, but this tactic proved to be their downfall as a rampant Waves front line repeatedly broke free and by the half time

The Under 9 Surfside Waves team are a talented bunch of young soccer players who are expertly coached by Emma Moran (Surfside Waves senior womens player) with assistance from parent Pat Kuipers. interval the Waves already had a commanding 4-0 lead. In the second half the Waves continued to dominate every aspect of play and were 6-0 up before Breakwater were finally given a glimmer of hope when they were awarded a penalty. But in form goalkeeper Adrian Hawken pulled off a stunning save to keep his clean sheet and rub salt into the opposition’s wounds. By the time the final whistle was blown the
Waves had notched up a remarkable 11-0 victory with Nick Hargreaves scoring 5, Alex Monroe 2, Stan Nangle 1, Andy Black 1, Staffan Hargreaves 1 and captain Troy McClellend 1. Waves still sit top of the league just ahead of Barwon Heads who are also in great form and keeping up the pressure in what is beginning to look like a two horse race for the title.

Grove girls impress at state level TWO Ocean Grove Calisthenics College pupils have danced their way into the 2011 Victorian State Team. Maddy Hibble, 17, made the senior team, and Chelsea Sherwell, 11, the junior team. They both competed at the Australian Calisthenics Federation National Titles. After eight months of intensive training at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance in Melbourne, they flew to the Gold Coast on July 3 where they trained for a week before competing. Maddy and Chelsea each performed 6 items within their teams - figure march, clubs, free exercises, rods, aesthetics, and song and dance. All Victorian teams put in strong performances,

with the Junior Victorian team placing third behind South Australia and Western Australia respectively. The senior Victorian team was equal second with Western Australia, again South Australia won. The Victorian intermediate team won their section of the Australian titles. Both girls have been selected for the Victorian team in the past, with Maddy having competed at three previous national titles, and Chelsea one. During their preparations the girls continued to train in their respective sections at Ocean Grove Calisthenics College. The Victorian competition season commences again at the end of this month.

OCEAN Grove Surf Lifesavers defied history to come second overall in the state Inshore Rescue Boat championships held in calm conditions at Inverloch earlier this month. Before the championships, Ocean Grove had never won a state titles medal for inshore rescue boat racing. The club achieved five
podium finishes and seven top five finishes in nine events. In the nine rescue based events – four women’s, four men’s and the all in Taplin Relay – the club scored 37 points to finish second to Williamstown. Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club competition manager Jake Pownall, who is also in charge of all the surf boats
and rescue based operations over the summer, was pleased with the outcome on both a team and personal level. “We came second to the number one club in the nation (Williamstown) so we know we’re heading in the right direction,” he said. “It was a great result after the years of hard work myself and Mathew Burke did in putting a dedicated
team together. It’s the best we have all ever done. “The flat conditions made it really even and while we relish rougher surf conditions we proved we can be competitive in the flat stuff.” In a fine individual achievement, Jake, the male rescue team driver, was the only Surf Coast/Ocean Grove team member to make the seventeen
member state team, which will compete at the national IRB event to be held at Glenelg on Friday. “We had a practice run at Williamstown on Sunday and will have another on Thursday in Glenelg,” he said. On the Saturday, three Ocean Grove teams – two men’s and one women’s – will compete in the national club challenge.

Bellarine baseball THE Bellarine Bears baseball club had a representative in the Geelong side who played Cheltenham for second in Division 2 of the regional championship. According to Bears club president David Crotty, Lachie Stott had a good series and was unlucky to miss out on selection in the All Stars team, picked from players in that series. The A grade side’s season still hangs in the balance. A 5-5 draw with EastBelmont Saints left them needing a win over Lara away, on the weekend. The club continues to work to attract new members, participating in a juniors program for 4-10 year olds. It’s being held on Saturday mornings over the coming weeks between 9-10:30am at Stead Park.

Grove lift for second half GRUBBERS U18’s kicked off the Battle of the Bridge with a slow first half. The boys won plenty of the ball through the middle of the ground but missed opportunities up forward were costly, resulting in a half-time score of 8.8. The second half however saw a much better performance across the ground, with Mitch Evans, Jack Rawlings and James Bennett getting plenty
of the ball and driving it into the Grubbers forward line. The forwards worked much harder in the second half with a best on ground performance by Aaron Habgood, who didn’t stop trying all day and ended up with 5 goals. Aaron received great support from Jess Rappa and Mat Grills who kicked 3 goals each. Other solid contributors throughout the game included Nathan Walter,
Dillon Haire and Nick Rankin. The final scores were Ocean Grove 19.16.130 to Barwon Heads 2.7.19. Whilst the boys won the game by 18 goals, Coach Rory Nicol believes there is still plenty of room for improvement. “After last week’s game against Modewarre, we actually went backwards this week in terms of a sustained four quarter effort, he said. “It was disappointing seeing
we come up against such a well drilled side in Torquay next week,” he said. The Grubbers U18’s last week played Modewarre, beating them by 148 points, which was the greatest winning margin by the U18’s so far this year. A best on ground performance by Mitch Evans and 7 goals to Nathan Walter and 5 to Aaron Habgood were the highlights from the game.

grubbers football
Above Left: James McTaggart muscles his way out of trouble.
On form Dan’s day GRUBBERS played an electrifying second half to win the battle of the bridge on Saturday. They defeated Barwon Heads 17.12-114 to 8.13-61 in Barwon Heads to ensure bragging rights stayed firmly on the eastern side of the river for another year. Whilst the final result went according to the script the first half did not, with the Seagulls up by as much as three goals in the second quarter against their more fancied opponents. It took the Grubbers until the 27 minute mark of the first quarter to score their first goal, a mongrel punt from Rowan O’Callaghan. In a quarter marred by skill errors and a lack of appetite for the contest, the Grubbers players were greeted by a less than impressed Cameron McGregor at the quarter time huddle with the scoreline reading 1.5-11 to the Seagulls’ 4.428. The second quarter was an ugly quarter of football with both sides struggling to score and the umpires not winning any friends with a series of bizarre decisions, including not paying clear marks, but paying free kicks and 50 metre penalties that had fans and coaches
N.H. Abbey
By HAMISH BROOKS from both sides – to put it mildly – perplexed. A goal late in the quarter to small forward Travis Gavin, returning from many weeks out with a groin complaint, put the Grubbers within ten points. He also kicked the first goal of the third quarter in what was clearly a rejuvenated and revved up Grubbers side. An avalanche of goals followed with firing full-forward Daniel Maloney kicking three for the quarter. Aaron O’Callaghan dribbled a goal through from a nice left foot snap, Jimmy Dalton kicked truly from a long set shot and a minute later fed a handball to youngster Sean Britt in the pocket. The right footer’s left-foot goal brought a big cheer and put the Grubbers 31 points up. In contrast, Barwon Heads could only muster a couple of points for the quarter. The Grubbers’ top three spot was on the line in the last quarter and it was an opportunity the side wasn’t going to let slip.
Backline general Berni Lynch, who played in a variety of positions during the game, kicked the first goal of the last quarter putting the game beyond Barwon Heads’ reach. To the Seagulls’ credit they stuck on bravely, kicking the next two goals, but any hopes of a miraculous comeback were snuffed out when Dalton kicked his second goal for the game. When he gave one off to Maloney a short time later, the mini-comeback, and the game, was over. Coach Cameron McGregor was pleased with his side’s comeback but was at a bit of a loss when asked about the Grubbers sluggish start. “We were definitely a bit flat,” he said. “Our warm up was a bit different this week as we went out onto the ground late and didn’t get as much work in before the game started. But then the second quarter we were still a bit sluggish and we’d played thirty minutes of footy by then.” He was pleased how the side worked its way back into the game in the third quarter. “We were just bombing away a bit in the first half
and not playing smart footy but then in the third we were able to get (Daniel) Maloney one-out and he’s kicked another bag of five or six goals today.” He was full of praise for the side’s full forward who has played a string of good games in the absence of the side’s other gun forward Shane Jack. “He’s one of the most talented guys at the club,” McGregor said. “It’s always been a consistency thing with him. He’d play one good game then go missing for two. But he went back and got some form in the twos and has now strung together four super games of senior footy.” McGregor singled out Tom Foott, Ben Ricardo and Cade Wellington for special praise as full-game performers in a side that had many under performing until after halftime. In the early game, the seconds recorded another strong win, defeating Barwon Heads twos by 105 points. They kicked 15 goals to one in the second half to continue on their winning ways. Wayde Piec kicked seven goals for the Grubbers.

Kicking goals THE future is bright for woman’s soccer in Ocean Grove, writes Hamish Brooks. The Surfside Waves under 15 girls side had four players representing Geelong at the regional championships last month. Carla D’Allesandro, Audrey Kotteck, Isabel Greer and Caitlin Pickett played for Geelong in the competition held during the Queen’s
Birthday weekend. Carla, who also plays in Surfside’s open women’s team, and Audrey, captain of the surfside under 15s, played in the under 16 side. Isabel and Caitlin, both eleven years old, played in the under 12s and wore the captains armband for a game each under the sides rotating captaincy policy. Under 15s team manager Leisha Riddington said all the
girls played really well and were fine representatives of the club. “They’re a fantastic bunch of girls and talented players,” she said. Isabel made it to the top thirty in the state trials but missed out when the squad was cut to fourteen. “I don’t want to blow her trumpet too much though, because she’s my daughter,” said Leisha, with a laugh.
