CROSSING A ‘MAJOR’ MUST DO: CITY

THINK LINK

GEELONG Council has acknowledged the need for a pedestrian crossing on Presidents Avenue between the library and the new Ocean Plaza. A spokesperson from the Traffic Unit said Geelong Council will be seeking approval for a zebra crossing on Presidents Avenue between The Parade and The Avenue.

“The proposed location for the crossing (is) between the driveway of the Police Station and the driveway of the Library, and would be easily accessible from the side door of the new Target store,” he said. This decision has come after a local resident supplied documents to the Voice dating back to May 2006 in which Geelong City Council released finding s of a Traffic Management Study on the Target site. A growing success VAN Loon’s Nursery has been voted the Best Large Garden Centre in Victoria. The Wallington nursery was presented with the award at the recent Nursery & Garden Industry Victoria Awards in Melbourne and recognised for its exceptional performance and outstanding achievements over the past year. “We are very excited and very privileged to have won this award,” says Heidi Martin, who runs Van Loon’s Garden Centre with Matt Hart. The nursery has previously won the National Award in the ‘Best

Medium Garden Centre’ category. Matt said: “It’s fantastic, we really worked hard to make sure that the place was spik and span. We are quite proud of the way the nursery was presented on the day (it was judged), that’s the way we try to present ourselves every day for the customer. “We try and make sure everything is well presented.” Matt was a nurseryman who worked his way up through the business and eventually took it over with Heidi. Both have continued to be hands on managers of the nursery, a factor

Matt said he hopes proves popular with customers. “One thing we really like doing is working in and being involved in everything that is going on,” he said. The ‘Best Large Garden Centre’ award acknowledges garden retailers that best display extraordinary business operation and dedication to work ethic on a daily basis. Heidi attributes the success to the Van Loon’s team; “The team here are fantastic and continually working to present the centre to the highest possible standard.”

Continued from page 1 Geelong Council hired traffic consultants Andrew O’Brien and Associates (now O’Brien Traffic) to determine any traffic needs the then potential plaza would require. In a letter dated May 18 2006, the consultants stated they had discovered definite traffic issues that could arise from the opening of the plaza. “Andrew O’Brien and Associates have identified safety issues at intersections on Presidents Avenue and recommend that roundabouts with zebra crossings … be constructed at three intersections, The Terrace, The Parade and The Avenue.” With further observation they reported traffic signals may be preferable for pedestrian safety than roundabouts however pedestrian flow at the time was light and dispersed and didn’t warrant the

installation of signals. The consultants did acknowledge the future safety requirements of pedestrians in the area. “In our experience, given the current and likely future function of the roads in question and their respective cross sections, roundabouts at all three intersections would provide an acceptable level of pedestrian safety and amenity.” These findings however weren’t discussed during the planning permit stage for the Plaza and resulted in Presidents Avenue lacking a suitable pedestrian crossing. Ocean Grove resident Julie Murphy was disappointed that the traffic issues weren’t properly addressed by Geelong Council during the early stages of the project. It is disappointing that council and the developers of Ocean

Plaza have not acted on any of the recommendations relating to traffic and pedestrian management around the site that were put to council by the consultants back in 2006,” she said. It seems that in all the rush to get the development finally finished, that the basic needs of the community in regard to road safety have unfortunately been neglected.” While the zebra crossing will be helpful for those currently struggling to cross the busy street, Julie recognizes that the traffic issues for cars still haven’t been addressed. “This only solves the problem for pedestrians but does nothing to address the vehicle traffic problems which will be shocking in summer,” she said. A consent request for the crossing will be submitted to VicRoads by Geelong Council before Christmas.

quick news Camera found A CAMERA containing what looks to be family snaps tops the list of lost property Bellarine Police would dearly like to hand back. The camera, a Canon digital camera, was found near a peninsula bank in October and has what appears to be family holiday pictures on it. Police are convinced someone must be missing the camera and the treasured pictures it contains. They say a lot of lost property is not collected because victims mistakenly think finders will keep what they stumble on. However, police say the opposite is more often the case with most people handing in lost property. Among other items now stored at the Ocean Grove station are a blue mountain bike, a motorised scooter found in Orton Street, a Buzz Lightyear bike found in Grubb Road and a toddlers trike picked up at Aquilae Street. Other items needing to be returned include a pair of golf clubs and some solar garden lights. For more information contact Bellarine Police Station on 5256 2698.

Todd’s on a mission OCEAN Grove boy Todd Clancy, 15, will be giving his Federal Member of Parliament a personal briefing on type 1 diabetes to help increase community understanding of this chronic disease, which affects five more Australians every day. As a Youth Ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Todd is an active representative for the 140,000 children and adults in Australia with type 1 diabetes. Meeting MPs to help them understand the day to day challenges, serious health implications of this disease and differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes are all part of the job of the Youth Ambassador. Todd will also be applying to join 99 other children from around Australia on a pilgrimage to Canberra in March. The capital city visit will target the Prime Minister and as many MPs as possible, to share stories about

the life-changing impact of type 1 diabetes and their concern about growing rates of new cases. “I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 8 years ago and since then I have had around 13685 insulin injections and 16422 fingerpricks to check blood sugar. “When I meet Mr Darren Cheeseman I want to help him understand how hard my family works to keep me healthy and why it is so upsetting when people think I caused this disease myself.”

Todd’s Mum says “Being a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes is the usual mix of joy and frustration with a huge dose of fear and worry thrown in. Keeping blood sugar in the healthy range is like walking on a tightrope, and living on a rollercoaster.” “We try so hard but often we don’t get it right. It’s a huge responsibility because of the impact on Todd’s future health.” Type 1 diabetes is associated with a significantly increased risk of serious health complications including blindness, heart disease, stroke and nerve damage. Mike Wilson, JDRF CEO, said: “Government support of Australian research into type 1 diabetes is critical - because only research can achieve a cure and we need it fast. “Australia has one of the highest rates of type 1 diabetes in the world and the rate of new cases in children in this country is rising by 3% every year. “This situation is urgent.”

quick news Canberra update A DIVE Victoria technical dive team was contracted to do a site survey dive on the HMAS Canberra in November. The dive was carried out for the government contractor, the Birdon Group, to assess the readiness and safety of the site for recreational divers ahead of the sites public opening. According to Jason Salter, Managing Director, The Dive Victoria Group: “The site is in fantastic condition perfectly settled listing to her starboard side. “She has already established some growth over her and many different schools of juvenile fish were seen through out the dive. “The dive through her proved to be far beyond what we possibly imagined.” Mr Salter also added that the wreck’s continued closure to regular divers was justified as some parts of the ship had become lose during the sinking.

State view: Lisa Neville MP Better access to specialist mental health assessment As Minister for Mental Health, I was pleased to announce that Victorians with a mental illness and their carers will have improved access to specialist mental health services thanks to an $18 million State Government funding boost. A range of health services will receive the additional funding from the Enhanced Mental Health Triage Initiative with Barwon Health included in the health services to receive funding. One in five Victorians are affected by mental illness each year and many more will feel its impact through family, friends and colleagues. We are investing the $18 million over five years to improve access to specialist mental health services across Victoria. The Enhanced Mental Health Triage Initiative will ensure

that people in need will have 24/7 telephone access to skilled triage clinicians who will make appropriate assessments and referrals. The role of triage will be reformed to support the focus on early intervention, improve capacity to identify and respond to psychiatric crisis and ensure that people are linked to the most appropriate care at the right time. This boost in funding will also allow Crisis Assessment and Treatment (CAT) teams to focus on treating people experiencing a mental health episode, and reduce the need for an in-patient admission. The initiative is in direct response to feedback from people with a mental health illness and their carers about how they access specialist mental health assessment and treatment and will be complemented by the new Mental Health Advice Line

that will begin to be rolled out next month. Premier’s sustainability awards recognise Victorians who rise to the challenge Businesses, community groups, schools, individuals and government agencies are invited to enter the Premier’s Sustainability Awards for 2010. This year’s awards are focussed on organisations and people who have done the hard yards and met the sustainability challenge head-on. There are eight award categories for 2010: small business; large business; community; products or services; built environment; local government, state government and tertiary education. There is also a Premier’s Recognition Award. Submissions close mid February 2010. For entry details visit www. sustainabilityawards.vic.gov.au

day in the life - neale ‘wal’ walter

Cobra at the grassroots I CAME to Ocean Grove in the early part of summer in 1977. I was born in Hamilton, Central Victoria, and as my Father was a School Teacher we moved around a lot as kids and lived in places like Norlane and Daylesford before finally arriving here. When we first moved into our new home there were only around 10 to 12 houses in the Collendina area at the time. The rest was open spaces and paddocks, which was great because I was into rabbiting, shooting and swimming in dams as a youngster. How times have changed now!! One of the first things I remember about Ocean Grove back then was that there were not many homes, but there was a great Oval in the middle of Collendina, that was actually being used for cricket. Also half the roads that connected Ocean Grove to Collendina were gravel. The first School I went to was Queenscliff High School, for 3 years, and then went to Geelong Technical School where I completed years 10 and 11. When I had finished School my Father thought it was time to pack up and move again and took a position in Coffs Harbour. By this time I was quite settled where I was and chose not to go. I got involved in many different sporting clubs around the Ocean Grove area playing Football for Ocean Grove, Tennis at Ocean Grove Tennis Club and also at Marcus Hill Tennis Club where I went on to become President for approximately 10 years. I also became involved in Coaching at an early age and Coached the Ocean Grove U/15 football team for 3 years and a U/11 learners tennis team at Marcus Hill. I am now married, to Michelle, and have 3 wonderful children, Corey, Nathan and

Kristy-Lee, who have kept me active over the last 18 years. With the boys being very sporty kids I got involved with the Ocean Grove Auskick Clinic where I coached and then became Co-ordinator for about eight years. I am still involved with Auskick being a District manager for the AFL, looking after the Bellarine Area and running grid games at Skilled Stadium throughout the footy season. I am now President of The Ocean Grove Collendina Cobras Jnr F.C, a club which I helped form over eight years ago back in 2002, and is the Pathway/Feeder Club

for Junior footballers moving through to the Ocean Grove F&NC. We start at U/10 level and go through to U/14’s only. A very successful junior program that I am extremely proud of. I have also coached at the Cobras at U/12 and U/14 level. Now that my daughter is also active in sports I am coaching her Wednesday night Netball team… the toughest role I’ve ever taken on, believe me!! I currently work as a Sales Manager for a company called Fine Wine Partners, (They are part of the Lion Nathan group), I service all of Western Victoria,

When I’m away from work I enjoy playing golf and cricket for the Collendina cricket club and also good food, good wine and good company, usually together. I also look forward to Sunday nights, which in our house is Pizza night! We always head to our favourite restaurant, Ocean Grove Pizza & Pasta, to eat in or take away depending on the situation and mood. Many things have changed in the 30 odd

years I’ve lived here, with Country Target opening, new housing estates, the growth in population and all the new shops etc, but I think it’s good for the town to continue to change with the times. I think the only thing I don’t want to see change is our Beaches… they’re beautiful the way they are and that’s what keeps bringing people back. I don’t know that I would want to retire anywhere else, but if I had to I’d probably say either on the Murray at Moama or Narooma on the NSW coast. But for now, there’s only one place I wanna be… Ocean Grove.

Local Lake images for arts sake AN Ocean Grove photographer is moving into radiography. Well actually the photographer, Brendan Waites, is taking advantage of a new initiative from Lake Imagine which aims to encourage and promote local artists by purchasing and displaying works throughout its network of centres and on its corporate website. The Geelong-based medical imaging practice has a centre in the Trak Arcade, Ocean Grove. Radiologist and Partner Chein Ho said “We have always believed that it is important to play a constructive role in the community in which you work, so from day one after moving our head office to Geelong

in 2006 we have strongly supported the fostering of links between business and the community, first through the Geelong Business Community Awards “The Bollies” and now through this initiative to support local artists”. Chein said: “Since 2006 Lake have donated over $30,000 to local charity through the “Bollies” and been a major supporter of Rainbow Riders. “We have first class artists throughout our region and if we can help create greater awareness of their excellent work our region is strengthened financially and culturally.” Brendan, whose works will be the first to grace the walls and website at Lake Imaging, is

a self taught photographer who from the age of 18 discovered his ability to capture unique and reflective images through his great love of nature and the outdoors. Brendan began his career as a landscape and wildlife photographer in 1994 in Queensland and has sold his works worldwide in UK, Canada, Japan and China. Brendan moved his family to Ocean Grove around three years ago and has been optimising his talents to portray sensational still images of the region. A selection of these images has been purchased by Lake imaging and will hang in the waiting areas across Ocean Grove, Drysdale and Geelong. Carols in the Park

THOUSANDS of locals and visitors are expected to gather in Ocean Grove Park from 7pm on Sunday 13 December for the Carols year. “It’s the one time of year families can gather together in a spirit of peace and joy”, says Jon Mamonski. Ocean Grove Carols in the Park is presented by the Combined Churches of Ocean Grove and is produced on a large stage with over 40 singers, orchestra, and crew. This year’s special guests are the principals from this year’s Queenscliffe Lighthouse Theatre Group’s blockbuster Broadway musical “The Sound of Music” including “Maria”, Adele Gregory, “Cpt von Trapp”, Dan Eastwood, “Mother Abbess” Carol Fogg and the very popular 93.9 Bay FM’s Mark Hyland will be host. There’ll be safe neon candles for the

kids with Santa expected to drop in. The Carols organisers encourage you to bring an unwrapped gift for a Cottage by the Sea needy child, to be put under the giant Christmas tree with its lights to be lit at sunset. Ocean Grove Carols in the Park is a local community event staged completely by volunteers and with Ocean Grove Park management who provide a BBQ, drinks, tea and coffee. The winners of the Ocean Grove Voice “Christmas Lights The Grove” competition will also be announced at the Carols. Bring all your family and friends for the largest annual community event on Sunday 7:30pm, 13 December in Ocean Grove Park, Cnr President Ave. and Draper St. For more details see: www. oceangrovecarols.org

THE GREAT Victorian Bike ride peddles off this week and will stop at Ocean Grove Park on Saturday. Riders are expected to arrive at the Park anytime between 7am and 3pm.Local groups can be involved with community displays and fund raising stalls. The organisers will be providing lunch and water but the Park Association has agreed to conduct a sausage sizzle with soft drinks. Community groups should contact Leigh on 0409 178 280 for more information.

Bike shop backs Voice’s bike OCEAN Grove’s Hendry bike shop has got behind a Voice initiative to get out of the car and onto a bike. The recently relocated business on the Parade gave the editor’s tired Trek bike a bit of much needed TLC so that we can start practising before preaching. One of the things the Voice finds is that most jobs we cover in the town are less than 5km away – which in theory is a short journey - and shouldn’t always justify

running a heavy old V6 between. Weekends will prove a problem as sport requires different equipment and tight timeframes. But we believe weekdays really do offer opportunities for an Ocean Grove resident and worker to leave the car at home. That’s what we think and that’s what we’ll try. Watch this space for the latest updates. *Thanks to the guys at Hendry for doing a great job.

Rusty’s Beau, Matt and Lachie are set to compete in the Global Battle of the Bands competition.

Grove’s Rusty’s go global OCEAN Grove band The Rusty’s have earned a placed in the world Battle of the Bands after winning the Australasian title in Sydney on Friday. The trio of 16-year-olds Beau Torrance on guitar and vocals , Matt Blach on drums and Lachie McKiernan on bass, will now take their indie rock style and original songs to a global rock off in London. Previously the guys had taken the Geelong title in October and

came second in the Melbourne Heat, incidently to another Geelong band Damnations Day. In Geelong they had five songs in which to impress but the heats have since got harder and are now just two. The two they chose to take to national final were Don’t Ask Me and The Robbery. Just ahead of the Sydney competition the boys talked about enjoying the experience, and were less concerned about winning. The main thing on

their minds was “getting their harmonies right”. The judges must have thought they had. The Rusty’s initially started off with just Beau and Matt – a team that goes back to drumming together when they were at kinder. Later on Lachie completed the line up which has gone on to perform at all levels – from busking and street markets to the Apollo Bay Festival and Geelong

Skandia Week. The first time they all performed together was an open mic night at the Ocean Grove Hotel three years ago. While a date for the Global Battle of the Bands final is yet to be confirmed the boys are also hoping to have a new CD, their second, out before Christmas. Grove CFA captain Bob Smith has parted with his Mo after 40 years of coexistence. Come Movember and a team of ‘supporters’ at the station, the chief pledged to shave it off if they reached $1,000. On Sunday morning the tally was well over $1,400 and climbing. All they needed was someone to do the honours. What better hands to be in than ‘Safety’ Steve Gibbs, who smoothed the whole process. Bob was last quoted as saying he liked the result and may not grow one again.

DELICATESSEN

Take Me Home hand-made ready to eat pasta range.

Mo’cean Grove held it’s end of year Movember party at Ocean Grove Pizza on Friday night. In keeping with tradition a genuine Mo grower - Gary Stephens - and last year’s winner Kevin Bowers did the judging. The winner was Damian Shortal with his well groomed Dennis Lillie style. Thanks to all the Grove and Barwon Heads business that chipped in with raffle and auction prizes - close to $1000 was raised on the night.

In store now.

Yabby, greens and gravy COLLARD Greens and Gravy rocked the Grove when they played the Festival two years ago. And they’ll be back in that mode when they return to top the bill at January’s Ocean Grove Park Tranquility Fair. The blues band will play last at the fair which will also feature the Ukulele Experience, Bambidi, The Little Stevies and the Junes. The stall side of the fair continues to go from strength to strength with most of the 100 sites booked far ahead of time. For foodies the selection is wide and includes Tibetan, yabby pies and vegetarian as well as chai tea, gelati, dutch pancakes and more. There’s also plenty for the kids, including rides, a mobile farm and other actitities. And as always the fair will boast a huge range of alternative and creative stands. The fair is on Saturday January 2 from 10am to 4pm. Entry is $3 for adults, children under 12 just a smile. Funds go towards maintaining and upgrading amenities at Ocean Grove Park.

There will also be numerous sports memorabilia for auction on the night.

Robbie’s back in town CLUB Grove hosted another Robbie Williams Tribute night. This time the night started off slowly, although Robbie came through with his immaculate performance, as always. But it was only near the end that the crowd got moving and filled the floor. Of course, you then couldn’t get them off. Robbie sang all the favourites, including Rock DJ and his latest single, Bodies. His encore ended with Angels. All in all a good night.

Hot music and warm rain YOUNG Ocean Grove talent was out in force at this year’s Queenscliff Music Festival, writes Carly Helweg. Festival goers braved the bucketing rain and thunder to see their favourite artists perform with locals Ryan McGill and Hollie Joyce proving they are artists to watch out for in the future. Ryan McGill kicked off the Blues, Roots and Beyond section of the Foot-in-theDoor program on Saturday night. The program gives young musicians the chance

to showcase their talents and participate in a major music event. Influenced by the likes of the Doors and Nick Cave, Ryan has the sound of a modern Neil Young and his versatility sees him singing, playing guitar and the harmonica throughout his set. Starting out acoustically, Ryan soon amped it up with his band and invited five mates on stage to back up on the tambourine. Most agreed that this year’s QMF was quieter than usual and many were

disappointed by Saturday night’s rain however Ocean Grove residents and festival regulars Annabel Cambridge and Lyndel Reeve were still enjoying the famous QMF atmosphere. “The weather’s put a dampener on it but everyone is still enjoying themselves,” said Annabel. “It’s been a good year, there’s not a lot of headline acts so we’ve had fun going round and seeing lots of different bands,” added Lyndel. Ocean Grove local Hollie

Joyce performed to a chilled out audience on a much sunnier Sunday afternoon at The Atrium café’s courtyard. Showcasing an immense talent and a musical maturity beyond her years, Hollie is a gifted story teller singing songs about love and life around her. She captivated the crowd with her unusual voice and slide guitar technique both working together to give an extremely soulful performance.

RSL thank you

Santa Letters

OCEAN Grove RSL would like to pass on its thanks to the residents and visitors of Ocean Grove for their generous support in purchasing Poppies. They also said that it is worth remembering that their donations are helping to support those currently serving in Afghanistan, including providing them with some of the little things that they miss from home. Thanks also to those that made Remembrance day a success.

Market donations going back to the local community EVERY month in the summer Ocean Grove Rotary runs a community market at Kingston Park. It also asks drivers arriving if they would be happy to give a gold coin donation towards community projects. Pictured left president Rod Greer passes a cheque from a recent market to one of the receipients, Ocean Grove Ambulance Station. The local ambos say the cash can buy specialist equipment, such as inflatable spinal boards which it would otherwise not have access to. Each month Rotary selects a different local community group to donate to.

Members were given a tour of the facility in an electric car. Santa came early to help Mannerim Fire Brigade celebrate their Christmas party at Big4 Bellarine Family Holiday Park. LEFT’: former tennis pro Julie Golightly has opened a store in the Ocean Plaza complex.

New chief at Grove NAB

Tennis career foundation for new store JULIE and Barry Golightly have just opened BJ’s Tennis & Leisure store in the Ocean Plaza complex. They have both been involved in the tennis sporting industry for 22 years. Julie played professionally, travelling through Europe, while Barry represented Australia and played in Argentina. Before starting the business Julie was – and still is – a Professional Tennis Coach, running the Bellarine Peninsula School of Tennis. The coaches cover Ocean Grove, Leopold, Queenscliff, Barwon Heads and also coach at Geelong College. Julie previously worked with Tennis Victoria for three years as

a Regional Development Officer for the Barwon Region. In between all of this, she manages to raise her two children, Stephanie (9) and Daniel (3). Barry also runs his own business as a qualified plumber. Julie, Barry and their children live in Queenscliff, but Julie says “we think Ocean Grove is a growing area which has huge potential and if definitely the hub of the Bellarine Peninsula”. Along with other tennis products, the new shop will offer tennis racquet restrings on their new $6,000 restringer. There will also be a range of running, tennis and netball shoes on offer.

The business will be run by Julie as the manager and she will also have two casual staff – Annaliese, who they have coached since she was 8 years old and plays Sec 1 Bellarine – and Samantha, who has been playing tennis since she was little. Sam is a very handy tennis player as she was in the Geelong College 1st Tennis Team, winning Associated Public Schools of Victoria. There is also David Franks, who is club coach alongside Julie at the Ocean Grove Tennis Club. David has knowledge and expertise with the products at the shop and has been in retail before. “He is the backbone of

the operation here” says Julie. Business has been steady in the couple of weeks that they have been open. “Hopefully it will pick up when our neighbours – Gloria Jeans, the pharmacy and hairdressers – arrive” say Julie. The business aims to be part of the community with fundraising and sponsorship and will be focussing on local tennis, netball and footy clubs, as well as schools around the Bellarine Peninsula. Out of work Julie’s passions are being with her children (not to forget her husband), eating seafood along with a good glass of wine on Hayman Island and playing tennis herself.

vary and include Bowen, Kinesiology, Hot Rock Massage or other techniques, depending on the clients needs. Clients have included shark hunter, Vic Hislop, the N.S.W. Ballina Hockey an AFL football club, as well as Olympic athletes, tennis players and golfers, as well as the young and the not so young. As well as health fund rebates and a smile, Wayne also offers a mobile service to your home. Wayne, with his taste for adventure has done everthing from hiking in the Victorian Alps, to fishing with crocodiles in the Northern Territory, visiting the Pyramids and taking a cruise in Eygyt. The best place he has been to, by far, was Kenya in Africa where he and his wife Sharon, safaried through the wildlife parks. In one camp beside a lake, despite being warned about dangerous hippos coming ashore in the evening, Wayne found himself cut off from camp with a big hippo blocking his path and others wading ashore behind him. Only by holding his breath and sneaking through the bushes did he get back, and get a thumping from Sharon for being stupid.

CHRIS Niven and his family have recently moved from Bendigo to Ocean Grove where Chris has taken up the role of manager at the local NAB branch. “We are thrilled to be here and I look forward to quickly becoming part of the Ocean Grove community and getting to know all our customers here” “I’m really excited with the proactive changes the bank is currently making , including scrapping some fees and providing fair value for customers across an impressive range of products and services” “It’s also important that we are actively involved in the local community which nab has done successfully for over 150 years throughout regional Australia, so I look forward to building on that amazing foundation”

Bellarine Coastal Forum – ‘Catchment 4 Coasts’

Opportunity for Ocean Grove participants The Bellarine Catchment Network, Barwon Coast and CoastAction Coastcare Program are investigating starting a new Coastcare group for Ocean Grove in 2010. The process and development for this will occur in the new year with community info sessions and some technical training for residents and tourists alike. As a lead in to this and to assist local residents to become more aware and educated about Coastcare and coastal issues, we are inviting residents of Ocean Grove to attend a free coastal forum on December 11 and 12, which is part of National Coastcare week (December 7-11). Matt Crawley Bellarine Landcare Coastcare Coordinator said we are reserving a further 8 spaces for local Ocean Grove residents to attend the Bellarine Coastal Forum ‘Catchment 4 Coasts’. The forum will be free with 5 field trips and up to 20 presenters on topics including biodiversity management, Orange-bellied Parrot program and Bellarine Ark – Integrated pest animal control. We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all

BARWON COAST Did you know that unlike most of the developed world Victoria is blessed with a legacy of 96% of its coastline being in public ownership ie The State. More than two-thirds of that coastal crown land is reserved as national park, coastal park, marine park or marine sanctuary mostly managed by Parks Victoria Most of the remaining crown land is reserved for public purposes managed mainly by Committees of Management such as the Barwon Coast Committee of Management. We were established 18 years ago to manage 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks (near Black Rock) including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. Within that area of management we operate two large coastal caravan parks ie the Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Summer Camping area, the surplus funds from which enable our coastal management activities to be undertaken at no cost to the local community. We are also the appointed manager of the local Port of Barwon Heads whose waters extend from the Barwon Heads Bluff to Sheepwash Rd Barwon Heads. Riverside Camping Ground Ocean Grove As you travel between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads in peak summer you would have noticed the large number of campers that suddenly appear on the river side of the sand spit. This is the Riverside Camping Ground that we operate for 6 weeks a year as an unpowered camping opportunity with over 200 sites. Those who have lived in the region for a number of years may well remember that camping was also allowed on the Ocean side of the spit but this was stopped to enable the fragile coastal vegetation to recover. With decisions have been made as to the location of the replacement Barwon Heads bridge and Barwon Water resolving where the new sewer main will cross the sand spit and the Barwon River, we are now able to undertake a full review of the area and have engaged consultants to prepare a draft Landscape Management Plan. The key matters being addressed in the Landscape Masterplan include the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and reviewing the existing provision of amenity blocks with the potential reduction in numbers, more strategically located and more environmentally sustainable. We are also investigating the best linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands .

The Landscape Plan will also address the need to provide appropriate access to 18W where Barwon Coast is funding Life Guards over summer, ensuring a patrolled beach adjacent to the camping ground. A draft of the Landscape Plan should be available for review by campers and others over summer. Hodgson St Car Park The car park at the bottom of Hodgson St Ocean Grove is a very popular access point to the ocean beach. Whilst not a patrolled beach area, the area is popular with dog owners being the access point to the beach area where dogs are permitted under effective control and where picnic tables are provided for great views of the coast. The pedestrian cycling trail from Collendina thru to Barwon Heads along the coast also adjoins the car park. We have now received from local landscape architects a draft of the masterplan that proposes the redevelopment of the car park to provide for safer traffic movement; a better interface with the pedestrian / cycling trail; improved stormwater management and revegetation work. Consultation with adjacent property owners will occur in the very near future followed by the general display of the landscape plan prior to lodging the plans with DSE for Coastal Management Act consent Mutton Birds / Shearwaters We are currently witnessing a large number of dead mutton birds being washed on to our local beaches. From all reports this is happening all along the South West coast. Each year numbers of Mutton Birds die during their migratory flight sometimes thru fatigue or storm impact and this year additionally maybe from starvation. DSE are interested in reports of any large numbers are dead mutton birds in a particular location and such information can be provided to them on toll free 136 186 I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager

A red-neck wallaby.

THE significance of the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve is that it is the last remaining area of original woodland found on the Bellarine Peninsula. The reserve has an interesting history. The land was initially subdivided in the 1850’s, and it was purchased by a man named William Harding. He sold the land to the Cuthbertson family, and it became known as ‘Cuthbertson’s Paddock’. The Cuthbertson family only cleared a small area of the land for their house, so the remaining land remained natural bushland. In the late 1950’s the two remaining members of the Cuthbertson family advertised the land for sale, but insisted that it remain in it’s natural state. Interested groups including the ‘Field Naturalist Club of

Red Backed Kingfisher.

A Kookaburra at Nature Reserve

Geelong’ and the ‘Shire of Bellarine’ combined resources, and raised the funds to purchase a quarter of a square mile of the land, to form the Nature Reserve. The area was opened to the public in 1971. In 1973 further land was purchased and the size of the reserve was increased to 143 hectares. The vegetation and animal life found in the Nature Reserve has slightly diminished over the years due to deliberately lit fires, track clearing and proliferation of pest plants. However it is possible to enjoy seeing the odd koala, echidna, possums, the Austral Grass Tree (mainly in the North West Corner), Red Necked Wallabies, and many species of birds. It is possible for interested

locals to join the ‘Friends of the Nature Reserve’ Group (information is available at the Information Centre). The Friends Group is involved in providing regular maintenance, information services, guided tours and speakers. Currently there are many beautiful species of wildflowers in bloom, including the ‘Blue Pincushion’ (pictured). Wildflowers include lillies, orchids can be seen throughout the reserve. On my many wanders through the Nature Reserve, I have seen the following birds: Superb Fairy Wren, Eastern Rosella, Brown Thornbill, Grey Currawong, Grey Shrike Thrush, Galah, Kookaburra, several species of Duck, and the Red Backed Kingfisher!

The Red Backed Kingfisher is smaller than a Kookaburra (it grows to about 24 cms in length). This bird is nomadic and is vagrant (which means it moves around from place to place) in Southern Victoria and Tasmania. They breed from September to February in inland or drier coastal areas of Australia’s South East and South West. They inhabit inland woodlands, scrublands, grasslands, and grassy tropical woodlands. They eat large insects (there are plenty of them in the Nature Reserve!), small reptiles and mice. The female Red- Backed Kingfisher is duller in color compared to the males, which have very attractive dusty blue wings. By Jennifer Carr

Cam’s raised on motor racing CAMERON Giddings has known from a young age that his heart lies with motorsport. It’s no wonder as his father used to read the Peter Brock Biography to him to lull him to sleep. “Motorsport runs in my blood; my Pop, Father and Uncle have all been involved in motorsport at some stage in their life,” he said. Cameron has been competing in the little known sport of Karting from the age of 13, giving him a chance to race around the track long before he held a driver’s licence. In competitive go-karting, not only do racers achieve speeds of over 100km/h but it also becomes a contact sport with competitors bumping tyres and karts every race. “I have never come out of a race without tyre marks all over my kart and bruises,” Cameron said. Having previously played with hire go-karts, Cameron was introduced to a proper racing kart by a family friend when he was 13 and knew from that moment he was hooked. “A month later I was racing,

competing in local events at the Geelong Karting Club with my father,” he said. Competing Victoria-wide until he was 16. Cameron then left kart racing to try other forms of motorsport but found he couldn’t get away from the competiveness of go-karting. “When I turned 20, I pulled out the old kart and decided to have a drive for fun; from that I was hooked again,” he said. In the past four years, Cameron

has competed state wide against some of the best drivers in Australia gaining podium finishes in major competitions every year. 2009 saw Cameron competing in the Victorian Country Series where he finished in the top five in all but two events giving him his most successful racing year yet. Driving against 25 of the top drivers in the state, he placed 4th overall even though he was restricted due to finishing university.

Enjoying the time he gets to spend with his dad and mates in his team, Cameron hopes to compete nationally and internationally in the coming years. “Eventually I would like to progress to another form of motorsport such as Formula Ford or similar,” he said referring to the fact that many professional race drivers like Lewis Hamilton began their career as go-kart racers.

O’Keefe at sportsman’s night Former Aussie test bowler Craig Connolly recently held the room when he was the guest after dinner speaker at Wallington Cricket Club. The man with the distinctive laugh and keen observational humour told the Voice it was his first visit to Wallington or Ocean Grove but remembers playing against the West Indies at Kardinia Park in the 1970s.

Soul at Boings Nippers star in Channel 10 show

SOUL longboard club ran its last comp for the 2009 season in November. Boings was once again the break of choice and was looking good for the first hour or so with light off shore winds and a small but clean wave. The wind change came early at about 9.30 and combined with the dropping tide it was a battle from then on to try and get the best out of the conditions. Points and positions were being hard fought for as some of the divisions still had room for movement in the top placing’s. The presentations for this comp took place at the Ocean Grove Cricket club

rooms which was also the venue for the Sewell family fund raising night a bit later on. All the takings from the days event was donated to this cause which came to about $1,060 and a total of over $10,000 was raised from the whole night. All the final results will be revealed at the presentation night on December 5. There will also be a fun surf day on the 5th where a new competition format will be trialled so come along and have a go and see what you think. Venue, Ocean Grove main beach 7am December 5th. By Andrew Brown.

OCEAN Groves’ Nippers were the stars of the show when a Channel 10 film crew visited the Grove to record an episode of David and Kim. Pictured left Ned Fitzgerald and above Gemma Sager are both interviewed by AnnMaree Bigar for a show about young surf lifesavers.

DSA training day success ahead of summer events ABOUT 30 volunteers turned out for a Disabled Surfers Association training day on Saturday. And judging by the smiles on those getting a surf - it was well worth the effort. The DSA (Victorian branch), which is based in Ocean Grove, will be running event days on Saturday January 9 and February 27. Both events will start at 9.30am at Main Beach. For more information contact Mark on 0431 601760 or Julia on 0413 925970 or Dave on 0418 575880.

Layne’s Grove bound

OCEAN Grove girls will be treated to a day in the waves with world surfing champion Layne Beachley, writes Carly Helweg. ‘Play It Safe By The Water’ Surfing for Girls program is aimed at giving girls confidence whilst surfing in open water in the lead up to summer. Layne will also promote techniques to keeping safe in the water and give tips to girls to become the best surfer they can. Layne will be at Ocean Grove main beach on Sunday December 13 from 9am to pass on her knowledge both in and out of the water to the next generation of female surfers. Apart from a day of surf lessons, participants will each receive an Oakley T-shirt, a show-bag and surprise giveaways throughout the day. Women of any age can take part and should bring their own surf board, equipment and lunch. Surfing Victoria can supply equipment to those who cannot bring their own. For further details and registration information, contact Surfing Victoria on 5261 2907 or visit www. surfingaustralia.com. Picture: ASP International

Green Room’s 15 years of supporting young surfers OCEAN Grove’s first surf shop - initially called Main Beach Surf - is celebrating 15 years of business, as well as its continued commitment to supporting young surfers. Currently the club has eight ‘team riders’ (some pictured left) on it books, as well as a number of skaters. Among those is local Josh Johnson Baxter who is about to embark on a World Qualifying Series conquest following some great successes in the last few years.

THE last competition of the season for 13th Beach Boardriders is always an important one. It’s the last chance to win valuable points to lift you to the top of your division in order to take home the trophy on presentation night. This years’ final comp also celebrated an important milestone, a fifteen year association with local surf shop The Greenroom. To commemorate this special occasion the Green Room announced it would offer $2,000 of prizes to club members via three explosive expression sessions, Unfortunately the 1–2 foot waves on offer at Corners didn’t quite make the event the extravaganza it should have been but they didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of club members in the water. As is tradition, final results for this competition are kept secret until the club presentation night.

This year to held on December 18 at the Hawthorne Suite, 13th Beach Golf Club. The Under 13 Division revelled in the small conditions with some great surfing from Billy and Tom Harrison, Bronson Field and Ben Consedine all having great crack. In the Cadets Gus Harfield had strong competition from amongst others Miles Fletcher and Tom Harrison and these young guns showed great maturity in surfing the difficult conditions. The Junior Men’s division is a tight race between Chris Jansen, Banjo Harfield, Ethan Herbison and James Jacobi battled for the points in what is to be one of the closest divisions this year. In the Open B’s, Link Beckworth has a small lead over rivals Harley Wadell, Grant Stringer and Jason Kersten and all gave everything they could in the small waves to get those important final points. The Senior Men possibly

Chris Jansen, Junior Men.

had the best conditions of the day, with a few nice small sets coming through, wave and board selection were very important and the range of surf craft out in the water was varied to say the least. Cam Lamperd surfed well on his quad fish while Damien Robertson had the crowd entertained on “The Ozone” something dug up from the back of the shed looking very much like the local jetty it may have been named after. Tim Crapp, Matt Tribe and Cam Lamperd were the stand outs in this division. Mark Hutson needed to win the Masters final to take out this Division from Dick Field. Unfortunately for Dick, he didn’t make the final but Paul Effanow, Mick O’Keefe and Grant Hutchins all made it hard for “Hutto”, “Eff ” in particular socred some great long rides in the tricky conditions and may have made it difficult for “Hutto”

Larry Willett, u13s.

to take back to back Titles. Ash Ward Kirri O’Connor and Kelly worked hard chasing waves in their final and with steff Crowley Clough and Molly Kenwood unable to compete, the winner in this division wide open. Sim Collier, Shawn Todd, Josh Johnson-Baxter , Kyle Gilbert and Michael Vender Klooster really showed the crowed what could be achieved in small surf in the Open A’s. In an outstanding exhibition of small wave surfing, the boys pulled of some great floater, cutties and airs. This is another division in which anybody could win. Unfortunately the expression sessions have been postponed as the surf dropped and a storm rolled through. Keep an eye on the club website (www.13thbeachboardriders. com) as a new date for the Greenroom Expression Sessions will be announced.

YOU have good days and you have bad days. Apprentice chippy Ben Evans woke up one Saturday in November and it was Jan Juc bowlers who felt the reverse of his good day. Ben who has only just started playing cricket again amassed a subtle 226 for the Ds despatching a collosal 27 sixes along the way. In terms of partners, the longest any of his colleagues shared the glory was Mitch Evans with 12.
