GROVE WOMAN ‘STABLE’ AFTER HORROR SMASH
TWO DIE ON HEADS RD BRIDGE CREWS MOURN WORK MATES
Above: the scene of the horrific crash on Saturday afternoon. Left: a tribute to Irish nationals Robbie Twomey and Adrian Freeman who died in the crash.
BRIDGE construction crews are mourning the loss of two work mates, killed in a horror smash on the Barwon Heads Road on Saturday afternoon. Robbie Twomey and Adrian Freeman died at the scene when their Toyota Camry collided with a Volvo Wagon near Links Road at 2.40pm. Investigators have been told that the Volvo travelling towards Barwon Heads crossed over to the wrong side of the road and collided with the Camry. The driver of the Volvo, an Ocean Grove woman in her sixties, was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne. On Monday
she was described as ‘stable’. There is some speculation she may have suffered a heart attack at the wheel. The two men that died were both in their mid-twenties and Irish Nationals working on the Barwon Heads Bridge. The other two men in the Camry, also in their mid-20s, were taken to Geelong Hospital with minor injuries. They were released on Sunday. CFA joined SES, paramedics and police at the scene. Police closed the Barwon Heads Road for several hours while investigations took place. CFME union organiser Rob Graauwmans said
the men’s work colleagues had been faced with the horror of arriving on the scene just minutes after. On Monday crews met with developers McConnell Dowell and the union and decided not to work as a mark of respect. The union provided a chaplain and counsellor for the shocked workers. Major collision investigators attended the scene and are keen to speak to the driver of a red Holden Commodore who overtook the Toyota prior to the incident. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333.

Paramedics treat the injured girl after the accident in Presidents Avenue.
Girl knocked down in Presidents A 12-YEAR-OLD Ocean Grove school girl is recovering at home after being hit by a car in Presidents Avenue a fortnight ago. Police say the Mathew Flinders pupil was lucky not to have been more seriously hurt after stepping in front of a car after getting off her school bus on the way home. The officer said the driver of the car was travelling well under the
speed limit and had no chance to stop after the girl stepped out from the front of the stationary bus. The accident happened at about 4pm on Thursday May 20. The road was closed while paramedics treated the youngster. Senior constable Mark Lewry said the girl’s school bus had stopped in Presidents Avenue and that she had gone to cross in front of the bus.
“Fortunately the car was moving below the speed limit and just by good fortune it was not more serious,” he said. “The driver couldn’t do anything, he could not stop and she was thrown a few metres hurting her head and back. “I think she’s been pretty lucky. If it had been a speeding driver then it may have been a different story.”

Winning nursery thanks its customers AWARD-winning nursery Van Loons recently held a gala day for its customers to say thanks after being voted national number one. Van Loon’s was recognised as the 2010 ‘Best Large Garden Centre’ at the Nursery & Garden Industry Awards in Darwin. “We were overwhelmed with this achievement. To be named the Best Large Garden Centre in Australia amongst such a high calibre of competition is an honour,” said Heidi Martin, Director of Van
Loon’s Nursery. Van Loon’s Nursery is steeped in history and tradition, since 1965 Van Loon’s Nursery has occupied 5 acres in Wallington on the Bellarine Peninsula. Since taking the helm of the business in 2007 Heidi and Matt have lead the Van Loon’s team from strength to strength. As previous National Winners in the ‘Best Medium Garden Centre’ category the Van Loon’s Nursery team stepped up to win in 2010 in the ‘Best Large Garden Centre’
category. The ‘Best Large Garden Centre’ award acknowledges garden retailers that best display extraordinary business operation and dedication to work on a daily basis. Heidi attributes the success to her passionate and experienced team; “The staff at Van Loon’s Nursery have expansive horticultural knowledge and are dedicated to making our customers’ gardens grow. This award is a testament to them.”

A NEW social group based on the Bellarine Peninsula will hold its first Ocean Grove meet and greet at the Zebra Bar in the coming week and is encouraging Grovers of working age to come along and see what it’s all about. A relative newcomer to Ocean Grove, Virginia Cooke has set up the Bellarine and Geelong social group to fill a niche that she saw in the market. “There seem to be quite a lot of activities for people who are no longer working, but it’s harder to make connections if you’re not only new to an area, but of working age, as everyone seems to be so busy these days”, Virginia said. Established for four months, Bellarine and Geelong social group is free to join has already hosted 17 events and the momentum is building with 25 more already scheduled, so there’s plenty to choose from with events organised for most weekends and some weeknights. Members can suggest events and host them if they want to, or they can just come along and see what it’s all about. “So far we’ve been to see Spamalot, had dinners out, coffee get-togethers, bowling, trivia, band and pub nights. And the kids can get involved too with indoor rock climbing coming up, and kite flying. The possibilities really are endless”, Virginia said. Bellarine and Geelong social group has 60 members, mostly female, but there are a few brave and very welcome male members. “We certainly encourage more men to join, but men seem to be more reticent than women about joining groups not connected with sport - I’m happy to be proved wrong!”
Shortlisted OCEAN Grove photographer Meaghan Cook was recently shortlisted in Capture Magazine’s emerging wedding photographers awards. Meaghan said she was amazed as she had only turned professional 18 months ago. “It’s an amazing honour,’ said Cook, “I had to read my name twice to make sure it was really true.”

Biker’s scooter worry LOCAL motorcyclist Steve Peters has recently observed a worrying trend in Ocean Grove. Scooter riders have been seen wearing inappropriate clothing and helmets for buzzing around town at speeds of up to 80kph. In the last fortnight Steve has twice witnessed a parent picking their child up from a school on John Dory Drive on a motorized scooter wearing a bicycle helmet and everyday clothes. “I find it frustrating the fact that people don’t take responsibility for their safety,” he said. “If you want to put yourself in danger and at risk of injury, fine, but don’t you dare put your child in that position.” When contacting the local police station on the issue, Steve was told to contact 000 next time he witnessed the breach of the road rules. VicRoads states that any motor scooter that travels under 10kph only needs a bicycle helmet however anything travelling quicker than that is classified as a motorbike and therefore a proper motorbike helmet must be worn. Steve owns his own accessory business specialising in leather motorcycle clothing and as a rider himself, knows the dangers people can face if they come off their bikes at high speed. “I’ve always got the proper gear on after coming off a pushbike at eight km per hour,” he said. A regular at cafes in The Terrace, Steve is able to watch traffic passing by on a daily basis. “You just have to sit in the main street having a coffee to see people on motor scooters wearing shorts and thongs in the warmer months,” he said.
Cyber trip A Saint Ignatius College student will head to Canberra next week to help tackle the issue of cyber bullying. Matt Gibbs is representing his school in a Youth Advisory Group organised by the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, to enhance youth safety on the internet. As one of 40 students from all over Australia, the 15 year old is the only representative to attend the forum from the Geelong area. Thrilled to voice his opinions on an important cause, Matt said he felt lucky to be the chosen spokesperson to bring his school’s collaborative ideas to the forum. “I’m really excited about the experience,” he said. “I think it will be really good and hope to change the way people act online.” The Government initiative will be held at the National Museum of Australia on June 8.

An engagement with the Eiffel: Kane and Renee under the famous Parisian tower.
Parisian proposal AN Ocean Grove couple has chosen the world’s most romantic city to get engaged. Kane Ellingsen proposed to girlfriend Renee Blach on top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris with Renee’s family present. “It was the most surprised I’ve ever been,” said Renee. Kane used some sneaky tactics to hide the planned proposal from his partner. Putting money aside each week he chose the ring himself and then employed Renee’s parents to mind it in their luggage for the first part of their trip so the surprise wouldn’t be ruined. The ring then slyly changed hands as they started climbing the tower. “I was quite oblivious to the whole thing,” said Renee. “I was wondering why Kane was
running up the stairs so fast.” Most of the Blach family had gone to Europe to support youngest sibling Matt who was competing in the Global Battle of the Bands in London with local band ‘The Rustys’. They were all on hand to help celebrate with the young couple and help spread the news to family and friends back in Australia. “We went and sat in the café on the second level and started talking to people and replied to messages,” said Renee. High school sweethearts, the couple met whilst in year 11 at Bellarine Secondary College and have been together for eight years. They recently built a home in the Parks estate in Ocean Grove and are looking to get married sooner rather than later. “Once we’ve paid off the holiday, we’re looking at getting married at the end of next year; we don’t want to have a long engagement.”

Family walk for MS THE Grahams of Ocean Grove will be taking a special family walk this month. John and Jill Graham will be strolling to raise cash for the MS Society by participating in their annual Walk and Fun Run. The June 6 fundraiser will coincide with Multiple Sclerosis awareness week. John and Jill’s 37 year old daughter Nicole Jubber was diagnosed with the disease three years ago however John suspects she has been suffering for a lot longer. “As early as her teens, she had seen a neurologist and at that time they put it down to vertigo,” he said. “Our suspicions are that quite possibly she has had MS from 16 or 17 years old.” ‘Team Nic’ has already surpassed their initial fundraising targets of $1000 and then $1500 and as a result have a new target of $2000 to reach. As part of the local bike riding community, John said that everyone has been generous in their donations. “The people in Ocean Grove have been very supportive,” he said. The Graham family will walk the 10km track with a group of extended family and friends and are excited to

day in the life - jon mamonski
Never a dull day BY night, Jon Mamonski is immersed in local volunteer work for Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, Ocean Grove Carols and Ocean Grove Artists Network, to mention a few.The working week is spent as Community Relations and Marketing Manager for Geelong Performing Arts Centre and at weekends, you’ll find Jon at St Peters Anglican Church, where he plays, sings and worships. Jon has just graduated from Deakin University with a Masters Degree and is currently committed to the ‘Leaders for Geelong’ training program. When he has a moment to spare, he’s making CD’s in his recording studio where his cover songs have filled nine albums to date. It was 30 years ago when I was in short pants, (well…. board shorts, I was young at least), that I first walked the beach at Ocean Grove so it was an easy choice to come back in June, 2000 and settle with my beautiful wife, Karen, daughter Rachel and son Ryan. Our first home was on Emperor Drive so we clambered over the dunes, often with our neighbours and their kids and embraced the sand and ocean. Within a year, tragedy struck, our son Ryan was diagnosed with Wilms Tumours on both kidneys, a rare, and as it tuned out, deadly disease. We were astounded at the support that came from everywhere in the local community, Rachel’s school – Our Lady Star of the Sea, our local church, St Peters, friends, neighbours and locals that we hardly knew. Along with our Christian faith they just held us together, through the trauma and grief of Ryan’s death. He was three years old. It was time to buy our own home so we moved to Wyatt Street and have loved living here ever since. Ryan is remembered in his own garden in the backyard. Moving up the road gave us a fresh start and helped us come to terms with our grief. We made new friends in our street, one in particular has become very important in my community life. Betty Cameron, a retired PA to Ken Myer and Paul McNamee, amongst others, has become my PA and I simply couldn’t manage all the community commitments without her. Bless you Betty. Doing volunteer community work is one of the most rewarding ways you can get involved with what’s going on around you and Ocean Grove needs volunteers
of all ages, whether in service clubs, community associations, school committees, sports clubs, the surf club, scouts and guides, and the Carols in the Park of course! Our biggest challenge is to develop our own Ocean Grove cultural identity, one that we all can relate to and be proud of. This can come about through supporting local community groups, events and festivals as well as supporting the Ocean Grove Community Association, Ocean Grove Community Enterprise and Ocean Grove Traders Association. These three organisations exist to ‘fly the flag’ for Ocean Grove residents and businesses and together, with our own Ocean Grove Voice, they are a force to be reckoned with. Through the things that unite us, our beach, dunes, foreshore, woodlands, where we live, shop, school and play, our town is simply paradise on earth and it’s time for a new car sticker that says so, (now there’s another community project).

Parenting is hard - but try this AN inaugural ‘Health Fest’ attracted a wide range of talented speakers, all drawn by the age old question - what’s the key to parenting? Well none of them had a magic ingredient, there isn’t one - surprise surprise, but bring them all together and you get a pretty powerful forum in information. They came from child psychology, law and order, mental health and
the medical professions, touching on everything from broken bones and breaking laws to dealing with teens and cyber bullying. The event at the Wave in Ocean Grove was organised by Ocean Grove Community Enterprise and supported by GMHBA. Co-ordinator Jon Mamonski said he hoped to build on this event in the future.

A Salvo of thanks
THE Salvation Army recently made a formal gesture of thanks to their hardworking op shop volunteers. Lieutenant Peter Hobbs, Corps Officer Bellarine Peninsula, visited Ocean Grove’s Salvos op shop on the trading estate on Saturday as part of the National Day of Thanksgiving and presented most of the 20 voluteers who give their time to the charity. Peter also took the time to make special mention of store manager Gill Fryer who has created a popular community centre at the store. Gill has managed the store since it opened four years ago.

Telco boost for Men’s Shed OCEAN Grove’s Men’s Shed project has been boosted by a $5,000 Telstra grant that will help them offer training in mobile phones and the internet. Telstra Area General Manager, Geelong, Ms Jodi Manion is pleased to offer local community organisations the chance to receive these equipment grants. “Through the Telstra Assistance Fund, we are able to provide the opportunity for our local clubs to get hold of the equipment they need to provide a better service for their members,” said Ms Manion.
“These clubs are an important part of our local communities, and this equipment has the potential to encourage participation by our young people in their chosen field,” she added. Ocean Grove’s Men’s Shed is up and operating at various venues around the town, in anticipation of eventually getting their own building. They have begun discussions with Cllr Jan Farrell who supports the project and is working with council officers to identify possible sites.
Meetings are held regularly on a fortnightly basis at Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre. Sub groups operating include a building committee, a community garden committee and a wooden box making group. Bruce Ward explained that the $5,00 would be used to train about 100 seniors, not just members. “Our trainers will be volunteers and they will donate their training fees to the Shed enabling us to have some start up funds of our own.”

Keeping it local ONE Wallington business has gone out of its way to back its local suppliers. The Elkhorn Road House has quickly put itself on the local map with a steady stream of visitors eager to try their fare. One of the things the business prides itself in is its buy local – or a local as possible – policy. At the end of last month the business went
further, putting on a suppliers tasting day. About half a dozen of its suppliers set up stands in the entrance and gave locals stopping by a chance to taste a wide range of foods, herbs and oils. Most were sourced from Bellarine suppliers, while the rest were either on the Surf Coast or within two hours of Wallington.
Head chef Nathan Veach said the process of buying local in the area was easier that most places and he added: “ The thing that I like is that the person that delivers the beef raises the beef.” Joint owner Terri Bitton said: “It’s been a really positive experience. I really enjoy being in touch with the producer .”

JUSTIN’S SET TO GO Punk rock band The Go Set, are back in Australia and ready to play Portarlington’s National Celtic Festival. Eager to play a series of Aussie gigs after a successfully long stint in Europe, lead singer and Grove local Justin Keenan said that he was excited to take part in the festival for the first time in three years. “It will be really good to get back there and play,” he said. The Go Set has been touring Europe for the last 18 months establishing a sizeable fan base and upping their album sales. “We are lucky in Europe as we have a
fantastic label and good management whereas in Australia we have always done it ourselves,” he said. “In Australia it’s a copycat industry where if you don’t look or sound like big artists from the UK or the US the labels tend not to be interested.” Their overseas popularity is apparent especially in Germany with about 50 alternative radio stations playing their songs, the equivalent of being played on Triple J in Australia. “It means that all the hard work sleeping in the back of vans has been worthwhile,”
Justin said. 2010 will be a busy year for the boys with a small Australian tour in July in between writing and recording their sixth studio album due to be released in the latter half of the year. Next summer will be devoted to a big Aussie tour to promote the new album. “We just want to make music that is sustainable, do what we do and know that people will turn up,” said Justin. The Go Set is playing The National Celtic Festival from the 11-14 June. By Carly Helweg.

OCEAN Grove is ready to rock Queens’s Birthday long weekend with over 100 live gigs already organised. Five venues around town will host a bevy of talented musicians over four days as part of the second annual Ocean Grove Live Music Festival. Grove Hotel open mic nights and will perform on the Queens’ Birthday Weekend with a year’s worth of performance confidence behind them,” he said. “If you’re not performing in front of an audience then it’s just a rehearsal.” Gigs will be played at Bardeli, Nectar Bar, Zebra Bar, Piping Hot Chicken Shop and Ocean Grove Hotel and most events will be free to the public. . More than 150 acts and inviduals have already signed up. Fellow organiser Dave Dorman said the event had grown as big as the Airey Inlet
event they had initially tried to replicate. As the Voice went to press exact acts and venues were still to be organised but visitors will find lists of acts on arrival. The headline act on the Saturday night is Melbourne blues/rock band, ‘Rockbottom James and the Quadrajet.’ More than 200 time slots are still available to local musicians wanting the chance to showcase their music. The Oliver Pit If you haven’t been in for a while you may notice that the front door isn’t quite where it used to be! We moved into our new premises next door at the start of April, with more space, double the seating, including our new booths (seats 6-8), a toilet and a 6 metre galley kitchen. The new and improved Olive Pit retains the ambiance of the old store but allows us to improve our offering to customers. Our new kitchen has allowed us to add some depth to our menu. This week we have introduced La Parisienne Goat’s Cheese Tarts and Duck Pies to our hot food menu and a range of lasagnes. Our deli inspired classic soups range is also back and always changing. Next week we’re bringing back the ever popular ½ Panino & Coffee special to keep the choice moving, and adding a range of Olive Pit Curries with saffron rice to our specials board. And don’t forget our finest range of cakes and slices. We’re sure the reason people keep coming back for our menu is simple: It’s all made from our deli fridges and shelves. Istra (Daylesford) premium free range smallgoods, La Parisienne (Carlton) pies, tarts and pate, Clarew free range eggs (Connewarre), La Madre preservative free handmade
bread (Bell Post), 70 cheeses, 14 antipasti, 250 shelf lines...the list goes on. If you think free range doesn’t make a difference, we challenge you to try our Bacon & Eggs, you won’t go back to supermarket bought produce in a hurry. We buy local when we can; our fresh fruit, vegetables and greens come from Elvis Parsley & Grapesland, our meat from Henderson’s Butchers, our eggs from Clarew Free Range, our milk from Mitchell’s Dairy. We try to balance this with our imported cheese range (75% European, 25% Australian) and are always on the lookout for new products to enhance our offering. For the gourmet cook or aspiring MasterChef devotee, we have an extensive line of those hard to find or higher quality ingredients like premium cooking stocks, olive oils, verjus and vinegars, pasta and sauces...even escargot and shells. Even better, if we don’t have it, we’ll get it for you. If all of this isn’t enough to convince you to come in, there’s one last thing. Our coffee, Tosteria del Corso, imported from Italy, is among the finest you will ever taste. It’s what we’ve become known for and why we are a business today. 200 people a day can’t be wrong.

TLC AGED CARE www.tlchomes.com.au
The TLC Homestead TroopAdours debut – an instant success Inspired by the success of “The Supper Club” a group of resident’s families and TLC Team members at TLC Aged Care’s Homestead Estate got together recently and formed the “TLC TroopAdours” – a merry band of singers. Under the direction of choir master Mr. Ron Embry and The Homestead’s Lifestyle manager Jacqui Marshall the TLC TroopAdours organized song books, set up and attended rehearsals and went about preparing for their debut performance. This all came together recently at The Homestead’s May “Supper Club”. The Supper Club is a monthly family get together where families, friends and the TLC Team just enjoy some time together with music, singing and, of course, some supper. The inaugural performance of the TLC TroopAdours was a smashing hit and they’re still being talked about.
Ron Embry and the TLC TroopAdours - an overnight success story
TroopAdour leader Ron Embry said “This is fantastic. We have only had two rehearsals and we are already performing in public. This is so much more than just a few lively minutes of entertaining – this group has somehow captured the very essence of The Homestead Estate. One big, extended family living, playing and having fun together”. And the TroopAdours have big plans for the future. “Who knows… we might even release a CD one day” said Ron. TLC Aged Care’s company founder and Chairman Dr John Leaper is delighted to see this all happening. “Both of my parents lived at The Homestead Estate and this notion of gathering together as a family to sing or simply enjoy the music was a big part of their lives and is still an important part of lives today”. “It is just too easy to just sit back and watch television and so we need enthusiastic people on our teams to inspire and encourage activities such as these”
Residents enjoying a dance at The Supper Club
Fran Durham has been the manager of The Homestead Estate for 12 years and is equally proud of her team and family. “We continue to look for new and fun ways to ‘be family’ and this is perfect. One of our plans for the future is to host our own ‘Morning Melodies’ and with that invite community groups out to visit.

Awesome bird of prey Wedge-Tailed Eagle. I WAS driving along Banks Road yet again last week, and spied a very large bird flying overhead. It was a Wedge-Tailed Eagle, and it was being pursued by several smaller birds who were very bravely chasing it away from their habitat. Since then I have seen a pair of WedgeTailed Eagles flying majestically over Grubb Road near Oakdene. The Wedge-Tailed Eagle is found throughout Australia, Tasmania and in New Guinea. It is Australia's largest bird of prey, and is one of the largest eagles found in the world, weighing about 4 kgs with a wing span of 2.5 metres. The Wedge Tailed Eagle has a distinctive wedge shaped tail. The Wedge- Tailed Eagle also has feathers on it's legs unlike other birds of prey. Females have paler brown feathers compared to the male. Females are also larger and heavier than the males (once again they are the stronger sex). Incredibly the Wedge-Tail Eagle can soar for hours at heights of up to 1800 metres, without having to flap their wings for momentum. The Wedge-Tailed Eagle is found throughout Australia, from sea level to high up in the mountainous regions. They prefer to live in forest areas where they can perch high up in the trees looking for food. They build nests in trees or on cliff faces. The nests are large; often around two metres wide, and they are made from twigs, leaves and branches. The nest is built to last for a few years. Wedge-Tailed
Eagles mate for life, and they are territorial in that they live in the one area throughout the year and defend this area from other eagles. The female usually lays two eggs, and they are incubated by both sexes. After about 45 days, the chicks hatch. At first, the male does all the hunting. When the chicks are about 30 days old, the female stops brooding them and joins her mate to hunt for food. The young Wedge-tailed Eagles depend on their parents for food for up to six months after hatching. The young leave to find their own territory when the next breeding season approaches. Their main diet is rabbits (they are very happy that Mr Thomas Austin released rabbits on Christmas day in 1959 in Winchelsea). They eat both live and dead animals- they can feed on road kill or catch their food themselves. Dead animal flesh is known as carrion. They also eat lizards, birds and mammals, and have been known to kill lambs on farms, in fact in the past Wedge-Tailed Eagles were hunted and killed deliberately to prevent them from killing lambs on farms.Very sadly bounties were offered for dead eagles, and large numbers were poisoned or shot – 147 237 in Western Australia in 1928 -1968 and 162 430 in Queensland in 1951-1966. How awful is that? Wedge-Tailed Eagles can hunt in groups, and have been known to kill animals as large as a kangaroo. Gruesome indeed but that is nature and they have to eat something. People kill lambs but there is no bounty on people! By Jennifer Carr
Joe Ellis of Elvis Parsley, Darryn Murphy of Murf’s Surf Shop and Cathy Stahl of Ocean Grove Newsagency.
Shops bagging plastic A GROUP of Grove traders have set a precedent in the town by banning or bagging plastic carriers. Disposable plastic bags which are said to kill thousands of marine animals a year and fail to break down. In Australia about 4 million are dished out by retailers every year. But Murfs Surf Shop, Ocean Grove Newsagency and Elvis Parsley fruit and veg store have
taken their own stand and hope to set a standard others will follow. Murfs has just turned in its second bag free summer, the newsgency ditched them six weeks ago and Elvis Parsley has been offering customers a series of four alternatives and incentives to do the right thing for several months. Newsagency owners Clinton and Cathy Stahl “because it’s environmentally the right thing to
do”. Clinton said they would like to see the whole town go ‘plastic bag free’. Murfs is also using the sale of the bags to help the environment – the proceeds of which go to SurfAid. • The Ocean Grove Voice is backing the campaign to rid the town of plastic bags. We’ll offer a free advert for every new retailer who pledges to do away with the bags.

ocean grove golf club championships
Tyron is double champ LOOKOUT Tiger Woods, meet Ocean Grove’s newest teenage golf sensation Tyron Cover, writes Mark Heenan. The Year 11 Bellarine High School student last month won the prestigious Ocean Grove Golf Club and Junior Championship. The Championships were played over 72 holes and over two weekends in May. The 17-year-old finished well ahead of his nearest competitors and won with a total score of 293 (72, 74, 75 and 72). Tyron, also an avid surfer, only took up the sport four years ago after spending his early adolescent years playing football and cricket. “I was more football and cricket (focused) and I don’t play those (sports) anymore, I’m more concentrating on golf,” he said. The bubbly teenager, who has a handicap of two, is fast becoming one of the Bellarine Peninsula’s brightest golfing talents after accepting a scholarship to play at the Victorian Golf Club. Last year Tyron, who plays regularly at the Queenscliff Golf Club, played a pivotal role in helping the Geelong region win its second successive Victorian Country Inter Regional Championships in Heathcote. Ocean Grove Golf Club Head of Junior Development, David Kee, paid tribute to Tyron’s hardwork ethic. Kee is particularly impressed with the teenager’s temperament
towards the game and his attention to detail. “I have got to pay Tyron some dues – ever since he first come down here and started playing competition golf I have seen him play 18 holes of golf and spend the next two hours on the practice fairway,” Kee said. “Now us old folk will play 18 holes of golf and go into the clubhouse afterwards, and we’ll spend 10 minutes warming up – Tyron will spend half an hour putting without swinging any other clubs. “The work he has put into (his game) to get where his now is a credit to the boy himself.” Tyron agreed the mental approach to his game had been a vital component, despite his youthful exuberance. “You see a lot of juniors in the tournaments (clock up) a lot of shots, but mentally you can save yourself up to 20 shots even if you are going bad,” he said. Tyron is also the nephew of well known media personality and ABC radio Coodabeen Champion Ian Cover, who lives in Barwon Heads. His grandfather Alan Cover, aged 93, remains a strong source of inspiration for young Tyron. Alan remarkably still plays regularly at the Ocean Grove Golf Club a couple times a week. “Grandpa still plays, he is still going well and still plays good too,” Tyron said.

Mixed start for Waves men In men's senior soccer division 1, Surfside Waves have had an indifferent start to the new round ball season. Surfside opened the campaign with a promising 3-1 home win over local rivals Barwon Heads with well taken first half goals from Kai Thieme and Sid Smith making it 2-1 at half time. The game was finally wrapped up after the break with a thunderbolt free kick from Staffan Hargreaves that crashed in off the post. In their second outing of the season the Waves drew 0-0 away to Lara, with Steve McGain coming the closest to breaking the deadlock rising like a salmon to head against the post. At the other end Waves burly goalkeeper Adrian Hawkins pulled off several fine saves to keep a clean sheet and ensure the points were shared. In their next match the Waves played away to the reigning league champions Barwon and in a hard fought, feisty encounter were unlucky to go down 2-1 despite an outstanding performance from Scottish import Greg Ireland. In their latest outing the Waves got it together slamming North Geelong 6-1 away with two goals each for veterans Kai Thieme and Nick Hargreaves, a great headed goal from Greg Ireland and a stunning volley from Staffan Hargreaves that crashed in off the underside of the bar to wrap the game up in style.

Surfside Volleyball Division 2 Hit me vs Grovers Grovers winning 3 sets, Hit me winning 1 set Grovers 25-15, 20-25, 25-11, 15-6 Tiprats vs Young Ones Tiprats winning 4 sets 25-6, 2512, 25-14, 25-12, 14-9 Not quite making it to 15 in the last set Division 1 Stingers vs Team Wave Stingers winning by forfeit Unfortunately for Team Wave they had to forfeit this game which was a pity as they only have 1 more game to go for this season. They did however get
some players to fill in for them so a match could be played. Phantom Devils vs 6 Pact 6 Pact winning 3 sets 25-11, 2517, 23-11 No Report Bandits vs Phantoms Black Blacks winning in 3 sets 25-9, 25-19, 19-11 Phantom Blacks were on the ball from the word go. They did some awesome blocking and spiking on the net. Lisa Krahe was setting for her team in the first 2 sets and saw her doing a fantastic job to get her team into a position for a winning hit. It is great when the setter can get the ball in position for the hitters. At
times she had a hard time as the first pass was not very accurate and this made it harder for her but her expertise and years of playing came to the fore and she was able to make those difficult sets look effortless. In the third set her brother Jon Collyer came on to give her a rest and he took over doing a fantastic job where Lisa left. Bandits weren’t quite up to scratch tonight. They looked a bit tired compared to Phantoms youth and vitality, but when it came to the crunch their team pulled together to win some points. Claire Jones did a great
job setting and Steve Clarke was awesome on the back line with his back line spikes. This helped his team out at times as Phantoms weren’t expecting these type of hits. Dianne Higgins did a great job to get some really hard passes back into play. The style of play has gone up several notches with only 2 weeks to the Victorian Country Championships. The Ladies team is playing in Division 1 as they have won the Division 2 competition a few years in a row. Good luck girls hope you bring home another trophy. Maybe the mens team can get a trophy this time!!!!!
COLLENDINA Cricket Club will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) this month. The AGM will be held at the Collendina Cricket Clubrooms on Sunday June 20 at 1pm. The Cobras will also begin its search to appoint a new senior coach. Club stalwart Leigh Norquay said the senior coaching position had recently been advertised. In March, Collendina’s A-Grade team won its first Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association (BPCA) premiership defeating Queenscliff.

From the jump the boys were switched on, finding avenues to score easily through Whittlesea’s zone defense. It was a great team effort with Storms dominance evident in both defense and offensively. Their intensity and pressure on the opposition players resulted in easy turnovers and scoring opportunities, which saw Storm run out convincing winners by 43 points. For the first time this year all the boys made baskets. Great effort. U 14 Boys (2) Bellarine 2 travelled to Werribee to take on 4th on the ladder Warrandyte 3 . Needing a win after 2 losses on the trot, the Bellarine boys started slowly . With Warrandyte holding a 5 to 9 point lead for most of the game it did not look good for the Bellarine boys. With 3 minutes to go and 7 pts down the Bellarine boys turned it on scoring 11 of the next 13 pts to steal a great win by 1 pt . Best players on the night- team effort . Under 16 (B) Girls Score: Bellarine 29 lost to Darebin 35 Top Scorers: Allison Marsh (9pts) Laura Ellis (7pts) Naomi Edwards (5pts) Game Report: With our girls still consolidating our new offense and
Darebin capitalising on some fast breaks, we got off to a slow start trailing 1-8. We stepped up in defense and with strong rebounding by Ally Marsh & Naomi Edwards went into the ½ time break, 11-17 (a lot of our score coming from foul shots). In the 2nd half we made Darebin work a lot harder and started to see some success in offense. Both teams were in foul trouble at the end and we lost another close, hard fought game 29-35. Once again, the girls all put in a solid game. We just need to “click” together as a team, so we can get a much deserved win BELLARINE STORM RESULTS Date: 28th May Results U12 Girls Bellarine 28 def by Keilor 55 U12 Boys Bellarine 39 def Melbourne (3) 29 U14 Girls Bellarine (1) 19 def by Geelong (2) 33 U14 Girls Bellarine (2) 39 def Corio Bay 17 U 14 Boys Bellarine (1) 48 def Darebin 19 U14 Boys Bellarine (2) 40 def by Keilor (4) 30 U16 Girls Bye U16 Girls Bellarine (2) 41 def Diamond Valley (4) 22 U18 Boys Bellarine 45 def by Geelong (2) 50 U20 Girls Bellarine 17 def by Melbourne 51 U20 Boys Bellarine 38 def by Mornington (2) 75 MATCH REPORTS U14 Girls (1) U14 Storm girls fired up with a cracker first half to challenge the top team with one point the difference at half
time. Misty Whitehill dominated right from tip off with her strong leads to the basket and hard work fighting for rebounds. The Storm girls demonstrated great poise as they patiently worked the ball around in offence creating the openings needed to get the points on the scoreboard. The girls put in an awesome defensive effort, and played with the intensity and focus that was asked of them. Unfortunately the team wheels fell off towards the end of the game with the end result of 19 to 33 not reflecting the spirit in which the girls played. A team effort to be proud of girls, GO STORM!!! U14 Girls (2) Bellarine 39 def Corio Bay 17 The girls had a pretty good game yet again. Once again our defence was good and forced Corio into making a few turnovers. The girls put up a lot of good shots unfortunately they just wouldn’t drop. Corio threw us a bit with their zone defence as it was very tight but the girls managed to get around them. The highlight of the night was Sherri’s 3 pointer from the top of the key with 3 seconds to go. Well done girls, everyone played well. We are half way through the season and I am extremely proud of how well the girls are going. Keep up the good work girls.. Storm in to titles WITH recent hard fought wins against the more fancied and higher ranked teams of Ballarat and Bulleen, the Under 16 A Bellarine Storm Girls have secured themselves an invitation to the highly regarded McDonalds National Junior Classic. The Girls currently play at the highest level of basketball in the state, The Victorian Championship Division and at the half way mark they sit at 7 wins and 2 losses and are currently in 3rd place. Head Coach Brendon Matthews said "This is a great result for the girls and for Bellarine Storm to mix it up with the best teams in Australia and to also put Bellarine on the map. The Girls have worked hard and deserve the recognition they are now getting and we look forward to the next challenge." The McDonald's National Junior Classic is a three day invitational tournament held in Melbourne
from the 12th - 14th June 2010. The event is regarded as the premier club tournament in Australia, attracting teams from all over the country. The annual tournament is entering its 34th year and is managed by the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL), supported by Basketball Victoria and endorsed by Basketball Australia. Due to the size of the event, two venues are used. In 2010 the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre will host the junior tournament (U12’s & U14’s) and the Dandenong Basketball Stadium will host the seniors (U16’s & 18’s.) The 2010 event will see 128 teams contesting the prestigious 8 championships held across the four age groups. In each of the eight sections, sixteen teams compete for the title which see in excess of 1500 players participating. The sections are made up
with eight teams representing metropolitan and country Victoria, and the remaining spots reserved for teams from New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and Western Australia. Large crowds are attracted to witness the best junior basketballers in Australia compete. Congratulations to all involved and we wish the Bellarine girls the best of luck. GO STORM! The Team consists of ;Molly Babb, Caidie Swayn, Bree Matthews, Alice Teague Neeld, Grace Parker, Melody Southen, Bronte Burke, Lauren Moloney, (Head Coach) Brendon Matthews and (Assistant Coach) David Burke. As the U16 A girls head off to Melbourne the rest of the Bellarine Storm teams will head off to compete at the Ballarat Junior Tournament over the upcoming long weekend. Good luck to all the Storm teams heading to Ballarat.
Grove needs more younger players A LEADING Bellarine Basketball administrator is concerned with the shortage of young female junior basketballers in the Ocean Grove region, writes Mark Heenan. Basketball Peninsula Basketball Association (BPBA) Operations Manager, Vicki Mallon, believes it is fundamentally important to attract local female youngsters to the sport for social and physical reasons. She said there had been a variety of factors for a shortfall in participation rates amongst girls under the age of 10. “There is a shortage I believe because some girls are intimidated by playing against the boys,” said Mallon. “In the Under 10’s the
boys out-number the girls on a 4-1 ratio, as we have about 130 to 140 males playing in the Bellarine region. “Club netball which ties in with local football is big in this region and the surrounding towns, so there is a focus on netball and not on basketball.” Mallon, a representative for Geelong Lady Cats in the Big V competition, has since developed an exclusive Under 10’s girls program – which aims at teaching young girls the basketball basics. She said the on-going development of the program will hopefully generate enough interest to re-establish an Under 10 Girls Competition in Ocean Grove. The weekly Under 10’s
program, which currently has 41 participates and 27 of them which hail from Ocean Grove, incorporates skill development, game education and game play in a girls only environment. “The program was introduced because we didn’t have the participation in young girls in the region,” Mallon said. She said the BPBA had formed a vital relationship with many local primary schools along the Bellarine Peninsula – with flyers distributed in school’s newsletters to encourage young girls to take up the sport. Mallon is especially impressed with Ocean Grove Primary School’s response to the program.
“The key is to have a contact parent at the school as some schools are really pro-active in supporting the program in their newsletter,” Mallon said. “Our next aim is trying to get clinics in schools. “Having the support of one parent in particular at Ocean Grove Primary had been overwhelming.” The program which is held every Monday afternoon between 4pm and 4:45pm, costs $30 for player registration and $6 per week. Weekly 45-minute sessions take place at the Bellarine Aquatic & Sports Centre run by local accredited female coaches. Please contact the BPBA on 5253 3377 for more information.

cobras
Above: action from Sunday’s Cobras under 10 Blue versus Orange match. Voice Reports Round 6 Round 6 Under 10 Blue Vs Leopold Lions In fine conditions for football the cobras came out hungry for the ball. Logan Taylor was strong in the air while Angus Benson and Ninja Pearson were in and under the packs feeding the ball out towards the forwards. Jacob Dynes was having a huge impact playing of the half forward and kicked 3 fantastic 1st quarter goals. During the 2nd quarter Jacob Dynes continued on with another 2 goals and when Jake Powe kicked his first for the day from a big pack of players the Cobras were up and about. Tommy Richardson was also playing strong in the back line with some big tackles and long kicks out of defence. The 3rd quarter was a lot tougher with many ball ups and big packs around the footy until a loose ball came out and Luke Giblin swooped, kicking long towards goal where Angus Benson was ready and waiting, took possession and he slotted through his second goal of the day. The final quarter was also a battle until Hamish McManus playing at full forward kicked a great goal from a large pack. Great Game Cobras. Cobras: 9.6.60 Leopold Lions: 3.0.18 Goals: J Dynes 5, A Benson 2, J Powe 1, H McManus 1. Best: J Dynes, T Richardson, J Powe, L Giblin Under 12 Cobras Round 6 White vs Leopold Green
In ideal conditions at Leopold, the Cobras started well early banging on 3 quick goals only to see the opposition fight back to level the scores by half time. Head Coach Simon Hollmer inspired the Cobras with an encouraging address at the long break and it inspired the team in the 3rd term. The forwards dominated with goals to Brod Gist, Kyle Lattarulo, James Synnot and Wil Towson. The Cobras finished the game off with lots of run, strong tackling and plenty of pressure and with 2 final quarter goals they secured a great hard fought win. Cobras 9.5.59 Leopold 5.6.36 Best: R.Jordan, W.Crawford, H.Drake, B.Gist, O.Hollmer, A.Dedini Goals: K.Lattarulo 2, B.Gist 2, R.Maloney, J.Synnot, W.Townson, N.Weatherly, J.Caliguri Under 12 Cobras White Round 7 vs St Albans White Friday night footy saw a very even contest in what were freezing cold conditions. Goals were very hard to come by despite some great footy being contested. Some great passages of play and powerhouse defence from Ned Weatherly, Owen Hollmer, Wilzen Crawford and Brod Gist helped the Cobras hold on to their early lead and run out eventual winners in an absolute nailbiter. Cobras 4.9.33 St Albans 3.11.29 Goals: B.Gist, J.Synott, O.Young Best J.Butteriss, J.Cuthill, N.Phillips, J.LeMaistre,
R.Symonds, O.Young Under 12 Cobras Orange Round 6 vs South Barwon Blue The Cobras hassled and plugged away all day to finally come out winners in what was not a pretty game. A lot of individual and selfish football with no team work resulted in a switch from the usual game plan. By the last quarter things started to resemble the old playing style and the boys will take this into their next game I am sure. Some great passages of play need special mention. Connor Harvey showed his usual prowess and strength in the forward area snagging a ripper and just falling short in what could have been the “goal of the year.” Lachlan Gawley Price’s speed was instrumental in setting up a couple of 6 pointers and the attack on the ball from big man Daniel Spence was a pleasure to watch. Joe McDonald needs only a sniff to slot a major and ended up with a couple by the end of the game. The side is coming together well and just needs to be a little more discipline on game day to ensure true Cobras style of footy is played. Cobras 8.6.54 Sth Barwon 2.2.14 Best: C.Harvey, D.Spence, L.Gawley Price Goals: J.McDonald 2, D.Bradley,L.Gawley Price, C.Harvey, O.Monteith, B.Pickering, L.Smith Under 12 Orange Round 7 vs Grovedale Roar The Cobras were certainly back this week. They
played a wonderful brand of team orientated footy. Captains Lachlan Madden and Declan Bradley led a pumped up side out on to the Snakepit on a beautiful day for footy. Right from the first bounce the Cobras looked the goods with big Blake Schwartz dominating at Centre Half Forward and Luke Fisher in the goal square making the most of every opportunity. The boys used their bodies to protect one another and played as they had trained. Joel Ness was instrumental in goal after goal as he attacked the ball and dished off clever handballs to the Cobras mosquito fleet like Craig Goodger, Connor Harvey and Tom Smith. Riley Featherby was awesome back from missing a couple with injury and combined well with little tough man Ethan Bell to break the lines. The team focus for this round was “accountability” and they certainly achieved in this area. Great to see some players using their non preferred foot to kick particularly Jacob Bond roosting a monster left footer down into attack. Special mention this week goes to Nathan Taylor who will miss a lot of footy after breaking his arm again. We may have lost a player on the field but we have gained an excellent assistant coach on the boundary line. Cobras 8.12.60 Grovedale 4.10.34 Best: E.Bell, C.Goodger, R.Featherby, B.Schwartz Goals: B.Schwartz 2, B.Pickering, L.Fisher,
J.Lancaster, L.Madden, J.Peters,P.Attard Cobras Under 12 Blue Round 6 Vs South Barwon Red The Cobras Blue were at Ervin Reserve for their round six clash against South Barwon Red. Led by Nicholas Giblin and Brendan Pease, the boys put the pressure on from the first bounce. Angus Mc Donald’s great play in the forward line led directly to 2 early goals giving the Cobras Blue the start they needed. Ronan Healy showed great determination in the back line laying some strong tackles and helping to keep South Barwon scoreless in the first half. In the third quarter the Cobras booted 4 goals to South Barwons 1 thanks to some great play from Austin Wilcox across the half fwd line driving the ball into attack. South Barwon came out firing in the last quarter kicking 4 goals to Cobras 3 behinds. With great team play and determination the Cobras had a 21 point victory. Goals: Tahj Bellman 1, Spencer Lappino 2, Darcy Pearson 2, Byron Taylor 1,Harry Unkenstein 1. Best: Austin Wilcox, Angus McDonald and Ronan Healy. OGCC Blue 7-10-52 South Barwon Red 5-1-31 Under 14(1) Round 6 vs Portarlington We had a good 2nd win in a row against Portarlington 6 1 37 to 2 3 15. Conditions were very
difficult with a heavy dew making the ball become a piece of soap. We were very disciplined and hard at it forcing the ball our way enough times to give our forwards a chance. James Teague, Nick Murphy, Ned Holland and Che Durran were all good through the middle of the ground. James Stirling and Zaine Cordy were both strong at the ball at either end of the ground. Harry Walker and Tom Beasley both stood firm in defence. Goals: Zaine Cordy 2, Lachlan Barber, Ned Holland, Nat Gravener, Miles Henderson 1 Under 14(1) Round 7 vs St Marys
In perfect conditions at Kardinia Park we came away with a good win against St Mary's 5 3 33 to 3 4 22. Our midfield were disciplined and gave us plenty of drive through the excellent play of Ned Holland, Christian West and Che Durran. Zac Ramsey was outstanding in his best game to date with his ball use a standout. Nick Anastassiou with his presence and pace gave us an avenue to goals and was rewarded with 2 goals. Goals - Nick Annastasiou 2, Zaine Cordy, Zac Dynes and Lachlan Barber 1 each. Each week we continue to get better as a team and the rewards will follow.

Exciting weekend for Grove THERE were lots of smiling faces last Saturday at Queenscliff with 9 out of our 12 teams having wins. D Grade had their first win of the season with a satisfying 7 goal win. Well done girls. There were some big scores with A Grade, 15 & U 2 and 13 & U 2 scoring over 50 goals. Mixed results for the girls against Drysdale the weekend before. Not a lot of success but what is most satisfying is the number of girls that we have participating each weekend in the red and white. The team spirit amongst the juniors and seniors is very heartening and great to see players supporting each other. Next weekend we take on Torquay at home which will complete a full round. Tracey’s Tormenters started strongly but had many passes picked off by the exuberant Dalton’s Dynamos and the boys took a “slender” lead into the halftime break (25 to 3). Disgruntled backman Matt Zorro was finally given the chance to goal by Captain Dalton – a pity he didn’t make better use of his goaling skills. Tenacious defending by Kaitlin Marchbank kept the goals at bay. Jackie & Monty showed that where sport is concerned – there is no love lost! Plenty of bruising tackles and knee raising speckies. Duimy was lucky not to be sent off for offensive underwear and blatant disregard for Umpire Bronwyn’s decisions. Jess Doherty was lively at wing defence and along with Jumping Jamie made the boys scoring difficult. Final Score: Who cares? Good turn up and no one got injured – Winners all round! IT WAS a heart-stopper between the best of two old foes at Queenscliff. Ocean Grove claimed its biggest scalp of 2010, defeating BFL ladder leaders Queenscliff in a pulsating match on Saturday. The thrilling two-point win was described by some as a season defining match for the Grubbers, who are now firmly entrenched in the BFL top five. Euphoric scenes erupted in the Ocean Grove camp, who led by 28 points at threequarter time, moments after the final siren as the Grubbers did enough to hold off the rampaging Coutas. Final scores were Ocean Grove 11.19.85 to Queenscliff 12.11.83. Grubber rising star and new cult hero Dave Gray kicked what proved to be the winning goal for Ocean Grove in the final minutes of play. Gray, a former Leopold GFL player, booted the Grubbers only fourth quarter major amidst the fast finishing Coutas’ avalanche courtesy of Queenscliff gun forward Edward Grout, who kicked five goals. The Coutas kicked with the aid of a favourable breeze in the final term. “I have never kicked a winning goal in any game,” A chuffed Gray said after the match. “I’m 21 (years of age), I have played six or seven years of footy and you can’t ask for much more than that. “When I took that mark, you

have that responsibility to go back and kick the goal. “(I said) to Milney (Josh Milnes) who came through in the passage of play and he said ‘C’mon mate kick it’ and I said ‘Mate this is home.’ “I had that quiet confidence about myself….it is stuff you want to do, you want the ball in your hands.” Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor praised the composure of Gray in the latter stages and his team’s gutsy performance to outperform the league’s best. He said the club had learnt valuable lessons from their narrow heart-breaking losses to Drysdale in Round 1 and April 17 encounter against Geelong Amateur. It was almost déjà vu for the
Grubbers, last year the Coutas snatched a miraculous win at the death in Queenscliff after Ocean Grove led by 25 points during the final term. “There was no doubt that we worked pretty hard on getting a bit mentally stronger,” McGregor said. “We didn’t have our fade away patches today. They (Queenscliff) came back and were kicking with the breeze in the last quarter.” The victory made the all memorable, exciting youngster Harrison Foott making an inspirational return to the field in the final quarter after he suffered a broken nose. “We were down to 17 to 18 fit guys…(Foott) could hardly see out of both eyes and we had to throw him out there for five or six minutes just purely because we had guys going down,” McGregor said. Meanwhile, Queenscliff coach Heath Jamieson admitted while the rivalry was intense between both clubs he said the Grubbers thoroughly deserved their victory. “Ocean Grove brought a fantastic attitude to the game, they really wanted to win and we sort of went through the motions,” he said. “I like the (Ocean) Grove boys off the ground, on the ground I hate them and I try to instill that in our players.” The Grubbers will now meet fellow BFL finals contender Torquay at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
