JUNIORS PLEDGE LABOR has pledged $3.5 million for Stage 1 of the Drysdale Sports Precinct, if elected in November. On Tuesday last week Lisa Neville, the Member for Bellarine, joined players and club officials to announce Labor’s commitment.
Ms Neville said, “The City of Greater Geelong is currently seeking $3.5 million to enable Stage 1 of the project to commence, and I’m delighted to announce that Labor is committed to providing that funding. “Currently Drysdale and
Clifton Springs have major shortages of ovals for junior football and other sports, and there is no oval suitable for soccer. Stage 1 of the project will deliver: premier football/cricket oval; multi use fields which cater for soccer and other sporting
codes and community use; sports lighting, car parking and a relocatable pavilion – planned to be replaced with a permanent facility in Stage 2 “I’ve been pleased to sponsor and support the Soccer Club over the past seven years, including the girls’ team. But
what they really need is a proper oval for training and playing and this project will provide that." Paul Rawson, Treasurer of the Drysdale Soccer Club, said, “We welcome this announcement. “The Sports Precinct will be a real boost to our Club’s senior and junior teams, and help

We have an emerging technology sector and when combined with an exploding demand from both business and the broader community, this demand is taking our existing internet services to breaking point, and, in many places, unusable. recently visited Geelong to hear our case for inclusion in the next stage of the NBN rollout. A presentation from Council (Community Development and Enterprise Geelong), as well as ICT Industry representatives and Deakin University, argued strongly for Geelong to be considered a priority location. We will await their decision. Geelong started lobbying for the early rollout of NBN in our region back in June 2011 and in March 2012 it was announced that we were in stage three, to commence in August 2013. Unfortunately, the trucks that rolled into town in June 2013 left immediately after the federal election in August last year, when the rollout was placed on hold. To date we have no rollout start date. With the contraction of our traditional manufacturing base it is essential that we plan for

Drysdale sub-regional sporting precinct As advised last month, the Stage 1 plan has been supplied to local member Lisa Neville and Liberal candidate Ron Nelson, prior to the upcoming state election in November. At the time of writing, I am pleased to advise that Lisa has made a commitment of $3.5 million towards the project should Labor be elected to government. This is terrific recognition that the sporting precinct is vital to support the demands of the population growth on the Bellarine. Action from the Drysdale vs Surfside Division Three game.
Tight game slips away A FRIDAY-night game under lights was awaiting in Ocean Grove for Division Three against local rivals Surfside Waves. Excitement and anticipation were in the air as Drysdale had won the corresponding fixture earlier in the season. Drysdale fell behind to an early goal and couldn't claw its way back into the match, which ended in a 1-nil win to the Waves. In Division Two, Drysdale met Breakwater Eagles. After defeating the undefeated league leaders last week, Drysdale was looking forward to a potential 'six pointer' against the Eagles, who sat only two points higher on the ladder. The football was open from kick off and both teams created chances, but neither could finish. The weather wasn't great either with a swirling
wind which contributed to the opening goal for Eagles with the goalkeeper dropping a difficult cross right onto the Eagles striker's head to finish from a yard out. A penalty to Drysdale not long after evened things up with Mark Hand despatching with ease. One-all with 20 gone, but it was soon to change with the Eagles finding the back of the net twice before Everitt Nelson was forced from the field with an Achilles injury, to be replaced in goal by player/coach Nik Trainor. Half-time came and went, 3-1 Eagles, and things didn't get any better in the second 45 with Nick Trainor making a rash decision to come for the ball only to see it in the back of his net again. Mark Hand decided to switch from hero to villian and concede a penalty this time, only to see the attempt
beautifully parried wide by the agile Drysdale keeper. Eagles won 6-1. The unbeaten Rangers came to Howard Glover Reserve to take on the league climbers Drysdale in Division One and were quickly shown why Drysdale was on the improve, with the pace of Hayden Reed and skill and guile of Nick Hopper and Danny Graham creating opportunities, but the Rangers defence held and quickly turned opportunity into misery by scoring against the run of play to take the half-time lead 1-0. The second half continued like the first, with not converting chances, and Rangers taking theirs, albeit one goal quite fortuitous, when a foul on a Drysdale player wasn't called and Rangers ran on to score. Rangers ran out winners 4-nil.

Hawks fall short in final round DRYSDALE Football Club senior team missed last month’s 2014 Bellarine Football League finals series for only the second time in the last eight seasons. The Hawks have regularly played BFL finals for the last decade, but were leapfrogged by fifth-placed Barwon Heads after Drysdale suffered a heart-breaking nine-point loss to the Seagulls in the final round. Drysdale senior coach John Fitzgerald tells Voice sports reporter Mark Heenan about his side’s 2014 campaign where the Hawks finished in sixth spot with a 10-8 win-loss record.
DEFENCE “I think our defenders really had a crack and we were good for most of the year. I think against Torquay the first time around we fielded a team we did not have a defender over 21 years of age in our back six. I rate them pretty highly this season.” MIDFIELD “We struggled in the midfield, we just did not have the depth to compete against the good teams, the games against Torquay and Barwon Heads in the last round we had a crack but we were just not good enough. That is the focus of our recruiting this year to pick up some high quality midfielders that
can really use the ball is what we are after.” ATTACK “Our forwards probably struggled, but a fair bit of that was a lack of demand, we were down forward 50 entries through the midfield in most of the games against the top teams and that basically because of our midfield.” RUCK “The ruck issue was huge for us again this year. We did not have Jake Simons when we wanted him, we did not have Daniel Gage in the second half of the season at all and we were just sort of pinch hitting in there again like we did last year. Last year we sort of got away with it, but this year we didn’t.”

Indoor sessions for cricketers DRYSDALE Cricket Club commenced preseason training last month with a series of four indoor nets sessions being held at Barwon Valley Activity Centre in Belmont, writes Mark Heenan. “It has been a good turnout from our main group and our new recruits,” Drysdale coach Shane Cutajar told the Voice. “The core group of our senior players have attended most sessions.” The Hawks will train on Wednesdays from 5pm at Drysdale in September before reverting back to Drysdale celebrates a goal against Surfside. Tuesday and Thursday training schedule once the new season starts. In 2014/15, the Hawks will field four teams, one in each grade. MEANWHILE A grade all-rounder Brett Harding has committed to another season at Drysdale, while the Hawks have recruited batsman Nick Hallam from Highton Heat, which plays in Geelong Cricket Association Division 1. The Hawks will play a one-day practice match on Sunday September 21 at Drysdale Recreation Reserve.
Women's division: Drysdale 6 vs Surfcoast 0 Drysdale took a while to find its rhythm against an undermanned Surfcoast at Howard Glover Reserve. Perhaps thinking the game was already won, the team was second to the ball and not attacking in the way it can. Finally the wheels began to turn and after a few frustrating opportunities had gone begging, Bridget Wallace surged forward from a through ball and cut back beautifully for Cath Sattler to pass in into the bottom corner. The goal settled Drysdale, which was playing with more confidence and assertiveness. Drysdale's second came from a well worked throw-in from Chris Cuff to Sattler's feet who turned and shot low and hard to the keeper's left. Going into the sheds 2-nil up but still needing to get first to the ball was the message from coach Steve D'Acunto at halftime. The second half was pretty much all in the Surfcoast half save for an odd break away that the Drysdale defence snuffed out every time. Colossal at the back were Talisha Sparks, Celeste Scott, Lily Wardley and Maddie Wilding, Sparks mastering the sweeping and Scott having the game of her life back there. Wardley and Wildling were fantastic and linked up well with wingers Indiah Van Galen and Steffi Wallace who were on fire down both flanks all game, both of them showing such determination to run up and back for the whole game was inspiring. Cuff was immense through the middle with young charge Dom Cordero learning the ropes and doing a fine
job. Allanah Gilbee and Rachel Higham worked tirelessly all afternoon, applying pressure, laying the ball off and some great talk helping the younger players. The third goal came from young winger Van Galen who terrorised the Surfcoast defenders constantly by burning down the wing, turning them inside out and was well rewarded with a well taken goal from the edge of the box. The fourth goal was down to some great pressure by Higham giving the Surfcoast defenders no where to go. Wallace capped of the best game of her season with a fine goal from the edge of the box. Late in the game a magnificent through ball from Wardley saw Candice McNamara leap on and finish with aplomb. Kardinia 2 vs Drysdale 1 Haunted by memories of the last time these teams met, Drysdale immediately buried those memories, coming out of the blocks strongly. Drawing first blood McNamara hit a cracking shot beating the keeper right in the corner of the goal. Midfield were containing the Kardinia attacks in the shape of Scott and Cuff with Sattler and McNamara terrorising the Kardinia defenders. Kardinia grabbed an equaliser midway through the first half but the Drysdale heads did not drop. Going into the sheds at 1-all Drysdale tried a different format in the second. Late in the second half, Kardinia did break through with a great goal that no keeper could have got to. Higham slotted in wherever was required playing her best soccer these last few games. Goalkeeper Maddie Hogan was outstanding.
