GROVE sports clubs are working with council to fix last minute issues over the development of Shell Road reserve as a long-awaited sports precinct. With the project - which will ultimately bring the football, netball and cricket clubs to Shell Road finally within reach, last minute amendments and a pledge for federal funding is all that stands in the town’s way to receiving its much sought after sporting hub. However, Darren Cheeseman, federal
MP for Corangamite, told the Voice that the funding won’t be coming from him if the sporting clubs aren’t completely happy with the plans. “I believe this is a priority project, but will not be committing to funding until it properly meets the needs of all the Ocean Grove sporting clubs involved,” he said. Grove on the agenda Continued from page 1. “We will not be funding a facility where a Club feels it is being steamrolled with their concerns not addressed, or being forced into a second-rate solution.” President of the Surfside Waves Soccer Club, Mark Rapa, said that they were not happy with their entrance to the club rooms but would be speaking with council this Thursday about changes. “We’ve expressed that we are happy with most of the building except for the aesthetics,” he said. “As we have a road view, we just want it to look like there’s a soccer club there.” Ocean Grove Football club president Geoff Cunningham said that while there were some problems that the club had with council’s plans, they were still completely behind the project. “Number one, we’re excited as a football club about going to Shell Road; it’s an opportunity to move forward into a unique facility,” he said. “The current facilities have been unacceptable and the club and members are behind (the move).”
Liberal candidate for Corangamite Sarah Henderson, along with council representatives, was a guest of Ocean Grove Football Club during the game against Barwon Heads on Saturday. Sarah lives in Barwon Heads.
The football club wants their ground fenced at the new site so they can charge spectators as they do at Memorial Reserve, however council has rejected the idea. “We’re going to lose in excess of $15,000 if we can’t run a gate and that’s a major concern,” Geoff said. Councillor Jan Farrell said that they will work with the football club to devise alternate sources of revenue through fund-
raising, as they won’t be fencing the ground. “Council has been very clear that Shell Road Reserve will not be fenced - it is public open space that provides a wonderful vista at the northern entrance to Ocean Grove,” she said. Sarah Henderson, Liberal candidate for Corangamite, has not yet pledged the funds herself however she is a strong supporter of the project and council’s plans.
“While there have been some planning and design issues, I understand that Council is continuing to consult with sporting clubs to ensure that their needs are met before the plans are finalised,” she said. “In a town which is growing rapidly, I support the importance that Council places on safeguarding public open space. “Mr Cheeseman’s threats not to fund this very important project are most disappointing. He had demonstrated that he is not prepared to be a responsible and cohesive advocate for the people of Ocean Grove.” Council will be meeting with the sporting clubs to hear their concerns this week and once plans are finalised, the project will be considered by Council at its meeting on June 8. “After the plan is endorsed by the clubs and adopted by Council I look forward to Darren Cheeseman honouring his commitment to the Ocean Grove community so that we can get on with building the infrastructure that our sporting clubs so desperately need,” Cr Farrell said.
$7,000 donated to community OCEAN Grove Community Enterprise handed over $7,000 to local causes at its second grant round last month. Chairman Jon Mamonski says that by keeping money in Ocean Grove, local organisations directly benefit. “Locals who bank with the Bendigo Bank, are members of GMHBA or businesses that use Geelong Telco just need to ask that Ocean Grove Community Enterprise be their local charity and these service providers will donate part of their profit back to Ocean Grove and that’s how we get to give the money to local groups. It’s that simple,” Jon said. The local organisations that benefited from this grant round were: Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre $3,500 for local youth support programs; Ocean
Grove Callisthenic College, $1,000 towards a Callisthenics Props Trailer; Ocean Grove Mic Festival 2010, $1,000 to help promote the Festival; Ocean Grove Rotary Club, $1,000 to help promote the community markets; and Ocean Grove Carols In the Park, $1,000 to help stage this annual community event. Jon explained: “Our purpose is to support local organisations who find it difficult to attract sponsorships and project funding. “The Ocean Grove Community Enterprise has a dedicated team of local community leaders that work hard to raise money for local groups and the current grant round gives local organisations the chance to underpin their important projects.”

Bronte’s cause goes annual A ONE-OFF children’s ward fundraiser organised by the mum of a young Ocean Grove cancer battler will go annual thanks to its first year success. Bronte’s Ball is set to become an annual event to fundraise for the Children’s Ward at Geelong Hospital. Ocean Grove mum Natalie Russell organised the inaugural event in 2009 to raise money for a children’s oncology treatment room to save parents the need to take their sick kids to Melbourne. The namesake of the ball is Natalie’s sevenyear-old daughter Bronte who was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer, Neuroblastoma when she was two years old. After major surgery and several courses of chemotherapy, Bronte is still living with a tumour that is too difficult to remove. However, it isn’t causing any problems and she is a happy grade two student, said her mum. The Russell family know firsthand how hard travelling a long way for treatment can be and now Natalie has made it her full time job to ease the strain for other families. “At least it’s only a trip

Originally living two and a half hours from Melbourne, shortly after Bronte’s diagnosis the Russell family decided to sell their farm and have a sea change moving to Ocean Grove. “We packed up in 2006 and moved to Ocean Grove and just love it, love the lifestyle here,” she said. Natalie believes that having a paediatric treatment room for
chemotherapy at Geelong Hospital is an attempt to take out some of the trauma of childhood cancer. “Initially kids were being seen at Andrew Love but they were in an environment with adults,” she said. Raising about $30,000 from last year’s ball, the money has so far gone towards sprucing up the children’s ward with new paint, curtains and a day bed. The 2010 Bronte’s Ball will be held on October 2 at Deakin University’s
KD Stewart Centre and Natalie is hoping to double the amount they raised last year. She already has several ideas for where the money should go. “We thought maybe even setting up a trust fund and newly diagnosed families (who) would get a one off payment just to help ease that burden in the initial stages when the child is first diagnosed.” For tickets to Bronte’s Ball or to make a donation contact Barwon Health Foundation on 5260 3822.
Feds to fix blackspot MP Darren Cheeseman says the Rudd Government will provide $38,000 to fix the Presidents Avenue/ Terrace blackspot. The money will buy a kerb extension, traffic islands and additional give-way signs. The project was recommended by a

panel of independent road safety experts and will be delivered during the course of the coming financial year (2010/2011). “I’m really pleased about this funding. This intersection is a real worry for both cyclists and cars, and it will now be made safer,” said Mr
Cheeseman. “Cyclists have spoken to me about the intersection, and it’s good to be able to deliver something for them.” Mr Cheeseman said the good thing about the Black Spot program is that anyone can suggest an intersection or section of road they believe should be considered for

THE Barwon Heads Bridge works are set to be completed on schedule by the end of 2010. About 100 locals attended an information session at Barwon Heads Uniting Church on Saturday, April 24 where representatives from VicRoads and construction company McConnell Dowell were on hand to answer questions on the project. The session gave residents timelines for the start of the second stage in June and completion of the bridge reconstruction. Traffic will be interrupted with the start of Stage Two in June where Ocean Grove bound traffic will use one lane of the existing bridge while Barwon Heads bound traffic will use the then completed pedestrian bridge. Both bridges will open to traffic by November, according to VicRoads, with finishing touches including lighting completing the project in December.

Kitchen declared open PUPILS have already been using their new school kitchen but one night recently it was the turn of the adults who had driven, funded and built the project to celebrate and say thanks. Among those attending was Federal MP Darren Cheeseman who revealed that he had helped secure $50,000 in funding that helped re-kick start the project when it ground to a halt for a period last year. Apparently the funding was sorted via a cup of tea with Julia Gillard. “This is an absolutely fantastic project. Looking at the smiling
faces I can certainly say that this is a project that has delivered. Other thanks went to builder Max Finlay and the Gordon Institute of TAFE and other supporters were recognised on a specially constructed Kenwood Honour Board. Another of the kitchen champions was David Holden who said: “Tonight is the result of one huge community effort,” and he praised the work and determination of Silvana Kenwood in seeing the project through. “Silvana is a testament to the school’s ethos, believe in yourself,” he said.
Valuers to set for June return AN antique roadshow type collectables appraisal is returning to Ocean Grove next month. This is the second time the event has been staged in the town and was so successful last year that the organisers have invited valuers Vanessa Crew and Adam Truscott from ‘The Collectors’ Murrumbeena back for another afternoon. All proceeds of the event on Saturday June 19 will go to the Uniting Church Share Winter Appeal. Last year they raised
$800. The event will be held in the Uniting Church rather than the hall this time with a big screen set up so that everyone can see the valuations in progress. There will be a limit of two items per person with a cost of $5 per item. Valuation tickets will be issued until 4pm. ANZAC in the Grove

ALL generations took centre stage during the recent ANZAC Day events in Ocean Grove. ANZAC Day in the town really began two days in advance with a service at Seaviews Manor nursing home in the Parks Estate on Friday 23rd. About 100 residents sang hymns and paid their respects to ex-servicemen and women who live or have lived at the home by laying a wreath in front of their own Wall of Remembrance. Captain Steve Trewin from Fort Queenscliff explained that his own 25 years of service had been fired up by the ANZAC spirit he had witnessed during parades as a boy. On Sunday April 25, several hundred people gathered by the cenotaph just after 6am to take part in a crisp dawn service. After a moving ceremony featuring a piper, the reward for the early risers was a hearty breakfast once again put on by local Rotarians at the Neighbourhood Centre. However, it was the 10.45am parade that traditionally draws the biggest crowds, and 2010 was no different. Led by a green army Jeep and local artist and cyclist Dennis Sonogan standing in as a piper, veterans, services, scouts, schools and members of the public streamed down the terrace in bright sunshine. The anticipated fly-over by the Roulettes was more of an unsighted fly-past but that failed to dampen the spirit of the event. At the cenotaph RSL members were joined by other speakers at the 11am service. Guest speaker Michael Lewis, general manager at Club Grove and a former navy man, talked about young people’s views on ANZAC and how proud he was to be speaking at the service. “I feel humbled because I am very aware that there are those here who have undergone a great deal more hardship than I have ever endured in my service life,” he said. Wreaths were laid at the cenotaph as well as the RSL monument at Ocean Grove Bowling Club.

Masonic History of Worshipful Brother Graeme Mowat has been recognised for 60 years of service. Graeme joined The Geelong Servicemen’s Masonic Lodge in March 1950 and was Installed as Master of the Lodge in July 1968. Graeme is a Life Member of the T.P.I. Association and is very active with Legacy in the Ocean Grove Area.On his retirement to Ocean Grove Graeme attended Lodge at the Bellarine Masonic Centre which includes Ocean Grove.

Get tested OCEAN Grove Rotary is campaigning to help tackle bowel cancer. May is Bowelscan month for people over 40 and for over 20 years Rotary has been supplying kits to local pharmacies as part of Rotary’s Bowelscan Screening Program, which has helped detect over 800 people with bowel cancer and more than 2500 with polyps, which is a precursor to bowel cancer. Bowel cancer also known as colorectal cancer is the most common internal cancer affecting our population. It is predicted over 1300 cases of bowel cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year, more than breast, lung and prostate cancer. With Bowel Cancer, don’t wait until it’s too late.
In Australia in 2010: • One person will die every 2 hours from bowel cancer. The risk begins at 40. Rotary Club of Ocean Grove Bowelscan coordinator Victor Harnath and assistant Bill Walton will be delivering the kits to local pharmacies during the last week of April; this year the kits will be available for $10. The 2009 campaign sold over 19,000 kits through 46 clubs throughout the Rotary District 9780 which covers an area from Swan Hill to Geelong, Ballarat, and Warrnambool and as far as Mt Gambier. Residents are asked to return completed test kits to their local pharmacies no later than June 16. More than 90 per cent of bowel cancers can be cured if found early. For details call 1300 779 694.

TWO dedicated locals have been honoured for making a difference to our community at the Impetus Youth Award ceremony held on April 15. The awards are aimed at rewarding people who are actively involved in youth issues and activities and have made a positive contribution to their communities through their own initiatives. Nicki Dunne from the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre received the Youth Worker award for her commitment to the Dropin program for young people on the Bellarine Peninsula. She and a team of others started Drop-in twelve years ago after realising there wasn’t much for the youth of the town to occupy themselves with outside of school. Ocean Grove had a high instance of graffiti and vandalism so Drop-in made the kids accountable for their actions. “We made a deal with the kids, graffiti here legally and any
and help out with any issues young people are having. Fifteen-year-old Liam Way moved the audience to tears while accepting the Inspiration award. The Bellarine Secondary College student has been exploring his movie making skills to highlight youth issues on the Bellarine Peninsula and dedicates his time to working with the MISSION team from Youth Foundations Victoria which gives grants to youth projects. The year ten student has himself received a $3000 grant which he will use to shoot a documentary film on homelessness in the area. “One of my goals is to learn more about homelessness and in the act teach others,” he said. The self confessed naughty kid, Liam says his life has turned around when he moved to Ocean Grove three years ago and started getting involved in YFV projects. “YFV made me a better person,” he said. Health Nurse Tanya Fitzpatrick nominated Liam for the award after she met him on a local film making project. “He’s wise beyond his years, there’s an adult perspective which is rare to find in an adolescent,” she said. “He’s a kid that other kids can look up to.” The Youth Health nurse has become a support for Liam and is blown away by his maturity and giving nature. “He wouldn’t tell you this himself but he wants to donate the equipment from his shoot to the centre for future kids to use,” she said. Although a budding career in film has just begun for Liam he can’t decided which path he would like to take after he finishes school. “Films fun, I want to do film, I want to do everything,” he said. Tanya agrees that Liam could do anything he puts his mind to, “his path is wherever he wants to take it.”

Apparently soon there will be an extra 6000 people in Ocean Grove and all the houses will extend to the Bellarine Highway. I wonder how many trees will be left? Where will I go to hunt mice

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Coastal Moonah Woodlands Along Our Foreshore Reserves Before European settlement, Coastal Moonah Woodland would have dominated coastal and near-coastal environments reaching approximately 5km inland in some areas. Much of this woodland has been cleared, with less than 10% of this plant community now remaining in fragmented stands throughout Victoria. The remaining remnants of Coastal Moonah Woodland occur on the coastal alkaline dune system which contains limestone. Coastal Moonah Woodland is now listed as a threatened plant community under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. Moonah, Coast Wirilda, Coast Tea-tree or Coast Beard-heath, or a combination of all these plants may form the tree canopy, providing shelter for important understorey plants. Interestingly, no Eucalypt species occur in this plant community. Although we cannot see the hive of activity taking place in a Coastal Moonah Woodland, it is important to understand the linkages. Coastal Moonah Woodland stabilises the sand dunes preventing erosion, and provides habitat and food for native animals. Small bats forage on the woodland floor for food, whilst Echidnas hunt for Ants. The Fiddler Beetle feeds on the nectar of the Moonah flower. Ringtail Possums build nests in trees, with a Ringtail Possum utilising up to five nests in different locations. Birds eat the insects; native ants move Wirilda seeds around, whilst Wasps pollinate Orchids. Coastal Moonah Woodlands can be seen along our coastal reserves. In particular, Barwon Coast is currently undertaking flora surveys of Coastal Moonah Woodland at 7W and 8W Collendina. So whilst travelling around our coastal reserves, give some thought to the unseen interactions between plants and animals taking place within our Coastal Moonah Woodlands. Australian artist Jackie Marshall is performing at the Chicken Shop on May 8. Jackie spent her early teens sneaking into 90s Indy Rock gigs and teaching herself to play a borrowed guitar by deciphering Bob Dylan charts of songs she’d never heard in real life. Still in her teens when she concurrently discovered writers the likes of Bruce Chatwin, Jack Kerouac, Hunter S. Thompson, Tim Robbins and Kurt Vonnegut, Jackie wasted no time in deciding to hit the road for a life of real hitch-hikin’ adventure. Thereafter she added Beat era Jazz and 60s era Rock and Folk to her musical tastes and started writing songs. Weary from the road one year, she shacked up in a dilapidated Queenslander behind the XXXX brewery in Brisbane with alt country aficionado and musician-in-his-own-right Chris Pickering, his little brother Vinnie, and Vesna Zornik the Slovenian super diva; during which time she caught a whiff of the tail of all this new-country malarky, not to mention an incessant barrage of fermenting hops. She released her Australian Music Prize shortlisted debut album FIGHT n’FLIGHT, to national critical acclaim late in 2006, and an official career in genre-defiant writing, performing and recording of songs was born. An incorrigible journeywoman, Jackie has finally found time to make a new album. LADIE’S LUCK will be released in Australia this year.

Building our future ALL Ocean Grove’s primary schools will have vastly improved facilities by the end of the year. Local Member of Parliament Darren Cheeseman visited Our Lady Star of The Sea last week to inspect their new building sites. Star of the Sea and the other primary schools have received cash boosts as part of the government’s Building the Education Revolution initiative. Star of the Sea alone was awarded a $2 million package to build a library and five new classrooms. “Building the Education Revolution is a fantastic example of the commitment of the Victorian State Government working with schools for new educational infrastructure,” Mr. Cheeseman said. Principal Rhonda Boyd said that the classrooms were due to open in September with the entire project to be completed by the end of 2010. “We’re very excited about it, it’s such a good
thing for the school,” she said. Rhonda said grade six student Nathan O’Neill is excited for the new classrooms to be finished as the grade five and six classes are currently located in portable rooms. “It won’t be very hot (in the new rooms) because we’ll have air conditioning,” Nathan said. The library extension unfortunately means a memorial garden will have to be removed from the front of the school. Ocean Grove Cancer Support Group Rob Burns planted the garden ten years ago to commemorate local people who had passed away. Rob tends to the garden in his spare time often coming in on a Saturday morning however he was philosophical on its end saying, “this is progress.” Surfside Primary School’s principal Mark Huglin said that their

Our girls never gave up and really surprised Eltham with intense defence & control. Despite Eltham’s attempts to freeze the ball, we managed a couple of quick turnovers & nearly stole the game. First set saw Team Wave put up a strong fight with some great back court spikes from Jonathan Lingham and some good setting from Sam Wilson to help her team get some points back. 6 Pact were on another winning streak, even though the first set did take them by surprise. Harrison Foott did some great spiking with Lyn Edlich doing a great job of setting. A really good game considering both teams had 5 players. Stingers vs Bandits DRAW Stingers 26-24, 21-25, 4-10 Stingers made Bandits play up to the standard they are used to tonight. It did make Bandits a bit complacent at times thinking they were going to have any easy win and this is what got Stingers into the game. Claire Jones for Bandits was at her usual best at setting the ball for her spikers. The second set saw Stingers lose a bit of momentum and focus to lose that set but they still made Bandits play hard. Mitchell Clarke was doing some great passing and blocking on the net for Stingers with his sister Melanie doing an awesome job of spiking and some great chasing of balls to help her team get the points back. Overall a great match considering Bandits thought they were going to have an easy match. Only 5 weeks to go to the Victorian Country Championships so teams are starting to have more trainings and it is paying off. Can’t wait to hear how the teams go this year, the last few years the Ladies team have played in the Grand Final to win it 3 times but the Mens team have still to get a place so they better get their act together if they don’t want the ladies to show them up. I can not believe that we are already into term 2 and how quickly the first term flew by. Julie has created a wonderful program full of activities for the whole community. If you haven’t seen one take a look at what we have on offer.
A member recently said “how much it has meant to her having a place to go where she could feel comfortable in the knowledge that others really knew how she feels. It makes such a difference to be understood.”
Negotiations for our building upgrade are on track with the City of Greater Geelong, hopefully we will have some plans up for display over the coming months.
Another said: “ the value of self help groups should never be underestimated they have a definite place in our communities – there should be more.”
Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre has received its provisional licence and are now in the process for applying for our full licence for Vacation Care. We are in the process of being re-accredited as a registered training office and throughout this process we will be adding another 8 courses to our scope of registration. These new nationally recognised courses will enhance local learning opportunities to our community. Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre has had some success in the Impetus Youth Awards – well done to all of our youth workers. Mood support group The Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre mood disorder support group was established three and a half years ago offering care and support to those in need.
The centre realised there was no self help group on the Bellarine available to people with mental health problems and we now offer a mutual support and self help program once a week, Thursday from 10am to 12noon. A member of the group wrote – “ this group for depression, is extremely important to the community that services the people in the surrounding and outer area of the Bellarine Peninsula. People with depression, like myself, find it difficult to communicate with others about the way they feel. There is still a certain stigma that exists where mental health is concerned. I can come to these meeting and share my thoughts and feelings without any judgement. This group is
friendly and welcoming, with a warmth and acceptance that is ongoing. Various speakers are invited and they all assist with this disease called depression. Often people can not find an outlet to verbalise their problems, and this always results in feelings building up until problems become unbearable. This group helps to break that cycle and therefore creates a feeling of well being. Since I have been attending these sessions, I have seen people improve their communication skills, and realise that there is a sense of relief, that they are not the only person out there feeling this way. These sessions provide

Young Cobras making the grade Round 1 Under 10 Orange vs St. Albans White Cobras Under 10 Orange had a great tussle with St Albans White before the saints got away in the last half. Cobras got away to a great start with Tyler Bryan snagging 2 goals in the opening term and James Gillians slamming through another. Harry Dixon-Jennings was in and under, Daniel Foster was working hard around the packs and Noa Northam was bursting through and kicking long. It was a fantastic first up effort from the boys, many playing their first game of footy. Cobras 3.0.18 St Albans White 7.10.52 Round 2 Under 10 Orange vs Leopold Green Cobras travelled to Leopold to take on Green under lights. The game was fast moving with some great tackling by the boys. James Gillians added to his goal tally and had a great game, moving the ball quickly with the help of his team mates. Lachlan Street was making an impact in defence and around the ball with strong play. Jase Franken’s was getting plenty of it driving his team forward with his raking left foot. Noah deBruijn put in another solid display helping out his team mates and getting plenty of it. The endeavour and the tackling of the boys against bigger opponents was great to watch. Cobras 1.2.8 Leopold Green 9.5.59 Round 3 Under 10 Orange vs Queenscliff Our first game at home and best effort so far. After the boys washed the sleep out of their eyes they matched Queenscliff all the way. After Queenscliff got away to a flyer (7 goals to nil) in the first quarter all the boys lifted. It was great to have Bryce Newton back and playing well. Bailey Payne was getting the hard ball and laying some strong tackles. Tom Ness in the ruck was forcing the ball forward and his great work led directly to 2 final quarter goals as we started to run all over

Jase Franken put one through after some great work from Tom and Noa Northam slammed one home to finish on a high. The tackling again was a highlight and a few shepherds in the last quarter was making a big difference. If the boys keep improving at this rate, keep helping out their team mates and most of all, HAVING FUN, a win is just around the corner. Cobras 2.2.14 Queenscliff 11.6.72 Round 3 Under 10 White vs St Albans White In a close encounter with the Saints the Cobras White side played some great team football. With big man Harry Rowsell rucking well, it gave midfielders like Seamus Spanner and Fionn Holten the opportunity to clear the ball out of the middle and send it into attack time and time again. The Young brothers did well with Flynn strong in the back and Noah with his speed dominating up forward. A real 4 quarter effort saw the teams hard work pay off, running out to a great win with a 4 goal last term. Well done Cobras! Up against a much bigger and stronger opponent again and yet they gave 110% effort all day. Led out by Nick Foster and Oliver Monteith, the Cobras defended bravely. A few bad bounces cost dearly but it was great to see the attack on the ball from the likes of Thomas Smith and Jack Tregenza. Both Luke Fisher and Joshua Lancaster
did the team things which coaches love. Once again the boys played the role of “last quarter specialists” with a 4 goal to 1 but it wasn’t enough to beat this Leopold side. As the skills and decision making improves, so will this team as there is plenty of talent amongst them. Cobras 4.7.31 Leopold 12.8.80 Best: J.Tregenza, T.Smith, L.Fisher, J.Lancaster Goals: L.Smith 2, J.Tregenza 1, N.Foster 1 Round 3 Under 12 Orange vs Queenscliff Blue The Cobras Orange side really came out to play in what was their first home game at the SnakePit. Captains Connor Harvey and Joseph Smith led the eager team out of the new club rooms and were on their game from the first bounce. Fantastic passages of play with great handball and link up kicks and hard at the ball attitude from all the Cobras saw them have their first win of the season. Nicky Foster was a human wall across half back taking mark after mark and sending the Cobras back into attack time and time again. Jackson stood up with some strong defensive work and the run and carry through the corridor of Joseph McDonald and Declan Bradley was outstanding. The forwards were potent with Riley Featherby, Oliver Monteith and Jack Tregenza all booting 2 each. team play and super strong tackling. Jesse Caliguri had the ball on a string taking big strong marks and slotting 3 majors from the forward pocket. The second quarter saw the Cobras take a comfortable lead due to some fantastic work in front of goal from Broderick Gist. He booted 3 himself which included one boomer from over 40 metres out. The 3rd term saw the Saints fight back kicking 4 goals to zip to give them the lead going into the all important last quarter. The Cobras steadied the ship with 2 early goals including one great running goal from Thomas Wallis. A big team effort and great possession football saw the Cobras run out with the game. Led by Alex Wilcox and Cory Pfeiffer the Cobras tried hard all game but were unable to match the opponent’s team play and ball movement. Harry Morris showed great determination around the centre while Michael Smith showed his skills and ability to attack the ball. Strong tackles from Liam Warren across half back and some strong marks from Hugh Brown in the forward line as well as some improved team play showed an improvement in the third quarter. Leopold We ventured to Leopold on Friday night and played a team that could possibly be the best Under 14 side in the Geelong region. Although outplayed the boys battled hard and put in four quarters of consistent effort. Zane Cordy was a standout, Nick Murphy again showed what a valuable addition to the side he will be, and we got our usual solid contributions from our skipper Matt Caldow, Stirlo, and Brayden Warren. Ned Holland snapped a lovely goal to show he can be an asset at both ends of the ground. Keep the heads up boys and the spirits high as it is going to get easier after already playing two top sides. Cobras 1.0.6 Leopold 19.16.130 Round 2 Under 14 (2) vs Lara (2) In what was a fantastic team effort and a show of skills, the Cobras dominated its match against Lara. With Mitchell Lindkvist as captain, the boys put pressure on every Lara possession and the back sixes defensive pressure was a highlight restricting Lara to just 8 scoring shots for the match. The forwards took advantage of every scoring opportunity banging on a massive 17 goals with McDonald, Hodder and Hollmer adding three goals each. A great team effort! Cobras 17.16.118 Lara 1.6.12 Best: V.McDonald, M.Henderson, W.Gant Goals: J.Hodder 3, R.Hollmer 3, V.McDonald 3 Round 3 Under 14 (2) vs East Geelong In what was a very windy but even contest, the Cobras played fantastic team footy. Captained by Jed Evans and down in the 3rd term the Cobras showed that never give up spirit to stay in the match. Sam Pfeiffer was great out on the wing and Jake Taylor ran off half back tirelessly. Jack Ness once again showed his strength and both ends of the ground. So it was with great determination and team play that saw the Cobras kick 2 final term goals against the wind and pull off a memorable victory. THE last two weeks have been a mixed bag for the Netballers. The juniors have been leading the way with some strong wins. Great to see both the A and B grade teams having their first wins for the season. A grade had a very physical game against Newcomb with Lucy Teague-Neeld hitting the ground hard and knocking herself out and Abbey Benjamin also hurt her head in a fall during the last quarter. No denying the girls commitment that’s for sure! A grade were over run by Newcomb in the last quarter going down by 6. It was fantastic to see A grade have a convincing win against ladder leaders Barwon Heads on Saturday. Hopefully it’s the start of a winning streak. A grade are 7th on ladder. B grade were impressive with their 6 goal win against Newcomb. It is good to see the girls have a well deserved win. Unfortunately the girls went down to Barwon Heads by 7. B grade are 8th on ladder. C Grade battled hard and lead for most of the game but Newcomb finished stronger and took the lead in the last quarter and won by 3. Barwon Heads proved to be tough opponents beating our girls by 20. C grade are 9th on ladder. D Grade girls were so disappointed to lose by 1 goal against Newcomb. They were certainly in the game all day and I am sure a win won’t be far around the corner for you. Barwon Heads showed why they are near the top of the ladder overrunning the D girls by 39. D grade are 10th on ladder Both C & D lack a bit of height making it tough going in the goal circles. They both have some good combinations though and as the season goes on they will get used to playing together and wins will come their way. Junior Coaches Reports 11&U – Bree & LucyThe girls had a slow start against Newcomb but were comfortable winners. Barwon Heads proved to be a strong team defeating the girls by 7. Keep up the good work and train hard! 13&U Div 1 – Jacquie – Not much to report as once again the girls didn’t have a game against Newcomb so they have

Read the Play is an innovative program which addresses the health and well being of young people. Football Geelong and Bellarine and District Netball Association are only two of the many groups and businesses sponsoring this program which is aimed at under 16 footballers and 15 & under netballers.

Against Barwon Heads the girls were pushed all the way and were just beaten by 2 in the end. 5th on ladder. 13&U Div 2 – Brooke – The girls are working really well as a team. All of the girls are willing to take on all positions on the court. They have had a great start to the season being undefeated. 3rd on ladder. 15&U Div 1 – Abbey – No game against Newcomb so girls had a practice match against our 17&U Div 1 who also did not have opposition. This was a hard fought game between the local girls and there was no slacking off – a good work out. This week the girls were too strong for Barwon Heads and had a convincing win. Girls remain 2nd on ladder. 15&U Div 2 – Steph and Liz – The girls have a very strong team who play well together. They listen to their coaches. They are happy to rotate positions
proving how versatile they all are. Undefeated and 2nd on ladder. 17&U Div 1 – Gary – The 17 & Under girls have had a really good start to the season. They are starting to “gel well” and remain undefeated. We are working through a few injuries and hope to have a full compliment of players by the second half of the season. 17 Div 1 are 2nd on ladder. 17&U Div 2 – Brooke – First game of the year against Newcomb as Ammos and Modewarre don’t have Div 2. Barwon Heads were too strong winning 20 to 8. 17 Div 2 are 8th on ladder 19&U – Charlotte – The girls have the potential for a really good year if they work hard and work together as a team. NEW Ocean Grove Reserves’ playing coach Kane Montgomery says the emphasis on his coaching style will be to develop youth at the club rather than being too results driven, writes Mark Heenan. Montgomery replaced the outgoing Shane Bailey after his threeyear stint as Grubbers’ reserves coach. The 30-year-old is a five-time premiership player (1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003) with the Grubbers and was a victorious member of last year’s BFL Reserves Grand Final against Barwon Heads. At the 2001 BFL Grand Final against Drysdale, Montgomery won the medal for being the best player on the ground. Montgomery, who spent time playing at Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL)
club Morningside in 2005 and 2006, said his outlook on football had changed upon his return to the Grubbers in 2007. “You’re there to develop players, not so much turn up and play seconds’ football,” Montgomery said. “Yeah I enjoy helping the kids and seeing them develop their football skills. “I used to eat, breathe and sleep football. “It is more of a balance now, I have become wiser especially watching football from the sidelines now.” While still a decorated player, Montgomery sat out the club’s Round Four clash against Newcomb and carefully presided making the moves from the interchange dug out. It was a move the club veteran thoroughly enjoyed. “I had (last year’s

Reserves coach) Shane Bailey helping me out against Newcomb with the match up board,” he said. “The difference from coaching on the bench as opposed to playing coach on the field, is you’re not yapping as much. “I found it easier watching and coaching from the sidelines.” Senior coach Cameron McGregor believes Montgomery’s experience and leadership had been invaluable to the Grubbers. “Monty has got a fantastic footy brain – selection wise he always knows who is available and who is not,” McGregor said. “I get along with him really well. “He knows it is about preparing his players for senior footy, not so much about achieving the result on the scoreboard. “He is certainly a huge asset to have at the club.” The Reserves started their premiership defence strongly winning three of their first four games with wins over Drysdale, Modewarre and

Newcomb, the blemish a heart-breaking four-point loss to Geelong Amateur in Round three. Montgomery stated though there was plenty of room for improvement. “We are going ok, but there are a lot of players who can improve and be a bit more polished with their disposal,” he said.
The Grubbers now sit in fourth position after losing their Round five clash to arch rivals Barwon Heads by nine points on Saturday. Outside of football, Montgomery works as a field officer with Vegetation Management Company, Vemco.

THE composed Grubbers consolidated its push for a finals berth and continued Barwon Heads’ season of misery to claim Battle of the Bridge honours at Ocean Grove on Saturday. Ocean Grove who won 18.17.125 to Barwon Heads 10.13.73, sit in fifth position with a 3-2 record, while the hapless Seagulls remain winless after five rounds. Grubber coach Cameron McGregor was satisfied with his side’s 52-point win. “It is obviously an important game to win whether they are the closest neighbour or the far away neighbour,” McGregor said after the match. “They (Barwon Heads) were the side that everyone was tipping to take our spot in the five and now they are struggling a bit. “What we needed to do is beat them and that puts us in the top five.” He said the new playing group would benefit enormously from the win and understand the intense rivalry of both clubs. “I think these (Battle of the Bridge) games are great for new players at the club to understand how Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads started,” McGregor said. Barwon Heads may have gained the early ascendency with the aid of a four-goal breeze in the first term, though the Grubbers applied brakes midway through the quarter and subsequently converted two late goals. Despite the impressive efforts of Seagull sharpshooter Lucas Murphy who went from attack to defence in the second quarter, the Grubbers held sway at half time by 27 points.
Courageous Ocean Grove skipper James Dalton set up the win with four goals in the first half and continued his consistent form to date. The margin blew out to more than six goals during the third term, although a late Seagulls six-goal blitz helped reduced the deficit to 14 points at three-quarter time. It was no to no avail in the final quarter as the likes of gun Grubber recruit Bernie Lynch, who kicked three goals, skilled midfielder James McTaggart, who booted four majors and debutant Sam Rankin put the finishing touches on an important win. Barwon Heads failed to kick a goal in the final quarter. The Grubbers were again without veteran Wayde Piec, a

former Seagulls player, who missed the game with a sore shoulder. The Grubbers will now embark on a Great Ocean Road trip this Saturday against Anglesea. “Anglesea has started well, they were 3-1 (after round four), they’ve beaten Drysdale which is a good effort,” McGregor said.
