THEFT MISERY

AN 11 year old boy has had his Christmas present stolen in a brazen, overnight theft. David Sheehan was staying at a friend’s house on Saturday, March 26, and woke up to find his treasured BMX bike had been taken from the driveway. People at the house in Aldebaran Road believe the bike was stolen between 11pm on the Saturday night and 8.45am on Sunday morning. David’s mother, Toni, said she was devastated when she was told about the theft. To make matters worse it is an important mode of transport for the youngster. “He rides it to school and home from school every day, to the skate park and to Barwon Heads,” she said. “Whoever stole it knew it was a kids’ bike. “I would rather it have been my car or the TV, but this was his bike.” The bike is a BMX, MirraCo Essex, commonly used for tricks on ramps and at skate parks. Toni has been unable to work for more than a month and cannot afford to buy David a replacement bike. “I’m currently borrowing my mum’s car so that bike was (David’s) only transportation,” she said. Residents in the area should call Bellarine police immediately if they know the whereabouts of the bike or its parts, or simply have information about the theft itself. “I hope whoever did this sees the photos around the town and is reminded of what they did, this was a kid’s bike.”

Best big Garden Centre

VAN Loon’s Nursery is Australia’s Best Large Garden Centre for 2011. The Wallington garden centre received the accolade at the Nursery and Garden Industry Australia Awards at Crown last Friday night. The awards recognise excellence within the nursery and garden industry and acknowledge industry leaders that strive to achieve best business practice. After winning the Victorian award for the Best Large Garden Centre in November, Van Loon’s Nursery was judged by a national judge in February. “This award is very special for us as it recognises the hard work of our team to run a successful business,” said Loretta Hart. “Winning it a second year in a row gives us a great sense of achievement and satisfaction.” In accepting the award on Friday night Matt Hart paid tribute to their staff and customers. He acknowledged how “pleasant it was to come to work when you are surrounded with great people in a great environment”. They plan to celebrate with a dinner for the staff and a few special events planned for their customers. NOT HAPPY: David Sheehan is gutted after having his treasured BMX bike stolen.

Teens raise $2,500 for charity Despite a less than expected turn-out, Ocean Grove’s Family Fun Day raised over $2000 for Cancer Council Victoria. Thirteen year old TahleaRose White organised the event at the Ocean Grove Hotel on March 27 with a silent auction, raffle and kids activities. Tahlea said she was disappointed with the attendance but pleased with the money they raised. “There was about 30 adults and maybe 15 children,” she said. “Including the auction, the casual dress days at school and donations from some of my teachers and donations on the day we raised about $2500.” Tahlea said she would like to thank all the sponsors who donated their time, money and auction items to make the Fun Day a success.

KEEPING YOU ON THE ROAD

NOT that usual that you come across a group of nuns eying up the surf conditions. This classic image was spotted by local John de Vries who came across them looking out at 13th Beach.

Surfside welcomes ‘awesome’ building FEDERAL MP Darren Cheeseman looked a little taken by surprise by the cheer he got from youngsters while opening the Surfside Primary’s long-awaited new classrooms and library. Perhaps he got the message just how much youngsters will appreciate the new learning space. Both youngsters and teachers have had to be pretty patient having been shuffled around from class to class for two years after the old portables were removed. If he didn’t hear that rousing welcome, he

certainly would have heard Doug Fairbrother’s rallying thanks later on. Doug explained that it had been thrilling to hear youngsters walking around the new school classrooms commenting that is was ‘awesome’. There were also thanks to the volunteers who have organised working bees to help with landscaping the outside of the new building. The Federal Government contributed $2,1M to build the new classrooms as part of its national Building the Education Revolution.

MP Darren Cheeseman (centre) was on hand to open the new library and classrooms at Surfside Primary. He is pictured with school council president Doug Fairbrother, principle Mark Huglin and year 6 pupils Lachland Gawley-Price and Brody Franken.

Back to the past

for taking an interest in lobbying on behalf of Ocean Grove. Jenny Robson Ocean Grove

YES, I am having dreadful trouble watching digital television. It has become so bad, I have resorted back to watching analogue, if I choose to watch at all. The digital picture pixilates and drops in and out completely in a rapid on and off manner. It has become worse over summer, yet we are now in early autumn and the reception has not improved at all! I live in a high part of Ocean Grove, in Rainbow Court. At present my digital reception is the worst it has ever been. Over the last couple of years a number of double storey homes have been built behind my property. My home is a single storey. I don’t know, but wonder if this has anything to do with it. I need to get a TV person to look at it, but for now am holding off because I have other financial commitments to meet. Thank you

It’s just atrocious WE REALLY appreciate your efforts with this. We live in the river precinct which at this stage does not have a colour on the map. I suggest that the colour be black. Our reception is atrocious. We have a good large antenna on a two story house, cables, booster etc. Anthony Gravener Ocean Grove

Spending overboard WHEN we bought our HD TV we had great difficulty receiving good reception. Since that time we have spent approx an extra $1000 getting a new aerial and booster to no avail. We still have intermittent TV reception and at one stage could

not get any channel for a period of two weeks. Sometimes we manage to get analogue instead of HD. I have contacted Conroy several times but found him to be totally useless in assisting, even when they have been informed that we have installed a new aerial, all I get is the standard “install a new aerial etc”. R Nelson Ocean Grove

Often lose signal WE LIVE in Kingston Estate, which is in the pink area described as having no major issues. We require a booster unit to get reception and even with that we frequently loose the signal from the major stations for short periods of time. Our neighbours have had to get “high gain” antennas installed to receive good reception so I think we also have our issues with reception. I look forward to hearing more about this topic and

whether there will be any action taken to improve our TV reception. Richard Olsen Ocean Grove

Why bother? I LIVE in Collendina and reception is often very poor. I purchased a HD TV about two years ago but frequently have to resort to watching the old analogue stations through the DVD player because reception is poor and the HD channels are unwatchable. I also purchased a set top box for a small portable TV but it is generally unwatchable too. Picture freezes, (pixelates?) or the sound breaks up making it impossible to follow a program. I often wonder why I bothered buying the new technology when I frequently can’t use it. I now find out that a new HD aerial might help the situation but that means another $700 or so and there is no guarantee it will fix the problem, so

why would I bother? I would like to endorse an appeal for a repeater station in this area. Lynne Toleman Ocean Grove

Cost a concern WE LIVE near Wallington Road and have a six-metre high digital antenna with mast head amplifier. We continually have drop outs, pixellation etc, especially on Channel 7, but some days can be worse and be all. SBS is always great. When this happens at least we can go back to analogue even though it is a bit snowy, but at least can be watched. The mySwitch website shows we are in a nocoverage area; the digital service switches over in December 2013 but we cannot apply for the vast satellite service until June 2013. And, even then, if eligible will cost some $300 plus dish. Mark Watson Ocean Grove

Bellarine Aquatic Centre Award Congratulations to Bellarine Aquatic Centre for recently being awarded Life Saving Victoria’s Platinum Pool awards in recognition of their outstanding safety facilities and practices. This centre, run by the City of Greater Geelong, has proven to be a very popular focal point in the Bellarine community for fun and recreational activity catering for people of all ages. The development of this project was a result of a Council grant and a grant I secured from state government and the efforts

of the whole community. I am delighted to see the centre recognised by this award. Easter Art Show The Drysdale Rotary Club will again hold its Annual Easter Art Show on April 23 and 24, with more than 400 paintings available for sale and including displays of student art. A highlight this year will be the launch of the Young Artist Mentorship Program with students from Geelong High School and Bellarine Secondary College exhibiting year 11 art. I am very proud to be the sponsor of this great initiative.

The art show is open from 10am to 5pm at the Leopold Indoor Neighbourhood Centre, with the funds raised going to the Andrew Love Cancer Research Centre in Geelong.

Emergency grants Local community-based clubs or organisations delivering sport and active recreation are eligible to apply for grants to replace essential sporting or first aid equipment that has been lost of destroyed as a result of fire, flood, significant sport event, theft or criminal damage. Grants of up to $2000 are available up to three months

after the loss or damage. Program guidelines are available online www.dpcd.vic.gov.au. Easter greetings I wish all the readers of The Voice, both Bellarine residents and those holidaying on the beautiful Bellarine, a safe and happy Easter break and school holiday period. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office if there are any issues I may be able to assist you with. Hon Lisa Neville MP Member for Bellarine 5248 3462

grove news

TV reception anger gives a clear picture OCEAN Grove residents have bombarded The Voice with details of their dismal digital TV reception. In response to the article (TV Blackspot, Ocean Grove Voice, March 22-April 5 2011) locals from all over town have told of difficulties when trying to watch their favourite show, and their concern in the lead up to 2013’s analogue switch-off. People, many of whom believed they were the only ones experiencing problems, have revealed their dismay at not being able to pick up an acceptable digital signal on their televisions. Glenn Campbell said he had experienced problems since they moved into their Collendina home 16 years ago. “We have had troubles with analogue reception pretty much since the first summer after the installation of our TV system – summer is the worst reception time of the year,” he said. “Total loss of signal can vary from minutes through hours, to several days in the worst cases, during this time of total signal loss, we will often still be able to get an analogue signal, albeit snowy.” Glenn said they have had an aerial specialist asses their home and have had numerous discussions with state and federal government representatives – a story typical of many who have contacted The Voice. “We engaged an aerial specialist to provide us with the best aerial when we went digital and we have a booster as well, however this has not solved the problem by any stretch of the imagination,” said Steve Bishop, who lives in a low lying area of Ocean Grove. Several people said they had spent up to $1000 on new aerials, boosters, televisions and set top boxes to no avail. Justin Dunn, manager of HiGain Antennas in Geelong, said they have several call outs to Ocean Grove every week and usually can help resolve any problems. “Mainly we help out people who have bought a new TV or set top box and we set it all up for them,” Justin said.

“There are some areas around the river in Ocean Grove that are especially worse than other areas but with satellite services it should help that over time.” According to the federal government website mySwitch, as of June 2013 people who live in blackspot areas can apply for Viewer Access Satellite Television which bypasses the need for television towers. The satellite system will cost about $400 with installation costs extra. Glenn said he believes that the satellite system will not be any better than what they are currently experiencing. “I work remotely via satellite

and it has just as many if not more drop outs than signal that comes from towers,” he said. Corangamite MP Darren Cheeseman said they are working very hard on the issue for Ocean Grove. “We have made the broadcast companies aware of the reception problems in Ocean Grove, and the frustration of people living in this area,” Mr Cheeseman said. “The broadcasters have said they are considering the possibility of a new gap filler transmitter to serve the area.” Mr Cheeseman recommends people contact the broadcasters directly to inform them of their

signal issues and consider the VAST system in the meantime. “We will keep on the broadcasters backs about this issue to see if we can get a long term solution,” he said. Justin said he could give advice to people who were struggling with their reception but needed to assess them individually. “It’s about speaking to someone and taking them each on an individual basis,” he said. The foreshore redevelopment is designed to provide more car parks, improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians as well as fix storm water overflow problems that have harmed the beachfront. The project is being co-ordinated by Barwon Coast with input from Geelong City Council and will result in the creation of more than 50 designated car parks. Barwon Coast general manager Bob Jordan said the redevelopment was aimed at making the car parking more structured especially for the busy summer months. “The general plan is to improve the usability of the car park and to try and find more of a structure,” he said. Residents, however, are worried that the upgrade, which includes plans to remove more than 100 square meters of vegetation, may harm the surrounding cliffs and sand dunes. Julie Pedler’s home

overlooks the area and said she was worried about the removal of a mature Norfolk Island Pine located against the cliff in the northwestern corner of the car park. Norfolk Island pines are classified as a non-native species. “My father worked on the foreshore in the 1970s carting the pipes for the road that continued from the Esplanade through and up to Hodgsons Street and the project undermined the cliff face, resulting in it being shut off,” she said. “You start mucking around with cliff faces …” she trailed off, looking at the cliff area around her home. Julie shares, with her neighbour, a concrete retaining wall which was installed in 1994 after works on the neighbour’s home undermined the stability of the cliff on which they live. “If that made the cliffs shift then what will happen when they remove all the tea trees and the pine?” she said. Julie said she was also concerned that the

project would put native flora and fauna at risk. “I’ve found three Leucopogons, which are a native plant, in behind the pine,” she said. Bob said the project would not go ahead if there was any threat to the surrounding cliffs or dunes. “No, if we believed it would impact on the area then we wouldn’t be doing it,” he said. Barwon Coast has plans to regenerate the areas that are losing vegetation in accordance with Net

Gain requirements of the Victorian Native Vegetation framework. This means the overall vegetation gains will be more than the losses and will only consist of native species including 13 established trees, 300 coastal shrubs and 300 grasses. Resigned to the fact the redevelopment will probably go ahead, Julie is fighting to retain the vegetation in front of her home which will ultimately result in the loss of only three planned

car parks. Julie said she has gathered more than 200 signatures from residents and visitors who support her objection. “I have had great feedback and that’s what is giving me hope, spreading the word is my quest,” she said. Objections to the project are currently being taken by Geelong City Council. Visit the council website – http://www. geelongaustralia.com.au – for more information.

day in the life — derrick humphrey

A musical life lived to the full “Music is my passion and has been the guiding force throughout my life,” says Derrick (aka Derek) Humphrey. He was born and went to school predominantly in London, although as an evacuee during World War II, he also attended school in Essex and Norfolk. Career opportunities were limited at that time and as Derek already loved most forms of music, he naturally chose music (the Armed Services being the only avenue available) … and so the journey in music began. In early 1941 he enlisted as a boy musician with the band of the East Surrey Regiment. The band was based in Kingston upon Thames and it was there that Derek learnt Music Theory, the saxophone, regimental history and finished his formal education. At the age of 19, he became

a fully-fledged band member, taking part in performances regularly A year later he was appointed principal alto sax player. Not long after this the band was posted to Greece, returning to the UK in 1951. Later, he felt the need for a change and, in 1952, successfully passed an audition for the Band of H.M. Scots Guards and was posted to their headquarters in London. Many memorable years and incidents were to follow: being at St James’s Palace for the Proclamation of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation (1953); the Coronation itself; being part of Queen Mary’s funeral procession; Trooping of the Colour ceremonies; many Changing of the Guard ceremonies; guards of honour for visiting royalty and other dignitaries; FA Cup finals at Wembley; rugby internationals at Twickenham; Murrayfield

MUSICAL PASSION: Derek Humphrey has spent his life dedicated to music.

Commonwealth Games; a number of Edinburgh Military Tattoos and the list goes on. In 1964 he read an advertisement for a saxophone player with the RAAF Central Band at Laverton, Victoria. Another successful audition found Derek with his wife and two daughters on their way to a new life in Australia. For the next 30 years Werribee became home and where their son was later born. Derek was very happy to be a member of the finest service band in Australia (and rising to the rank of sergeant). The band travelled extensively

throughout Australia and visited Canada for Expo 1967, Nauru and entertained the troops in Vietnam. There were more ceremonies, receptions for the Queen, parades and concerts. In his private life, Derek still continued his musical involvement. In 1968 he formed the Werribee Choral Society (later the Werribee Music Society) becoming the musical director until retiring in 1983. Derek was voted Citizen of the Year in 1981 for his services to music. In 1979, Derek and a music colleague Roy Hamilton

formed the Westgate Concert Band. Their aim was to provide an opportunity for students in their area to extend their musical capabilities. This was certainly achieved with the band being successful in the VBL championships several times. Westgate won B Grade three years in a row and A Grade twice, and was placed fourth in the National Titles. The band participated in the Pacific Basin Band Festival in Hawaii in 1987, winning a few trophies. Derek finally retired from those musical activities in 1993 before moving to

Ocean Grove to live. Since coming to the Geelong area, Derek has been involved in adjudicating, concert band workshops and singing with, and arranging music for the Ocean Grove Uniting Church choir. Derek’s time these days still includes arranging concert band music and supporting young musicians. However, his interests have widened to include bowls, Probus, Lodge, RSL, gardening, the beach, wood turning and attending concerts.

A love of the landscape AWARD winning local artist Simeon Walker, who is renowned for his portraits of native trees, is set to open a major new exhibition. Simeon’s highly anticipated solo exhibition, opening in May at Flinders Lane Gallery, will feature his painstaking oil paintings, exquisitely bringing the Australian landscape to life through careful attention to light and shade, colour and texture. Simeon is a long-term resident of the local area, living in Ocean Grove and working out of his studio in Geelong. The local area and landscape provides much of the inspiration for his work. He has a long standing interest in examining the borders where the natural world meets the edge of the civilised one. Many of his paintings are situated on the urban fringes where housing estates and shopping centres constantly push back the farmland and open scrubland. On the Bellarine Peninsula, where the artist lives,

this is happening at an alarming rate. Simeon said: “The point of interest for me lies where naturally dramatic forms meet the edge of civilized suburbia. It is here where human society is pushing out into the open land to both

embrace and eradicate it. I am fascinated with these paradoxes and recurring opposites that define our relationship with the landscape.” His upcoming show Verticals examines the world above us. The world between

the earth and the sky which, in our busy lives, we rarely pause to contemplate. Rich cloud formations and sculptural tree forms become studies in composition for the artist in this latest series of paintings. Simeon Walker was a

finalist in the 2005 and 2006 Metro 5 Gallery Art Award, being Highly Commended in the People’s Choice category. His highly sought after work is represented in collections in the UK, the USA, New Zealand and throughout Australia.

A book and a cuppa’ BOOKS on Parade is a unique new business in Ocean Grove, combining owner Lisa Sutherland’s three favourite things; pre-read books, loose leaf tea and vintage homewares. Moving from Melbourne to Ocean Grove nine years ago Lisa saw a need for a second hand bookshop for the area. “I’ve always had my nose in a book and there is nothing better than finding that perfect read. For many years now, I have wanted to open my own bookstore in order to share my passion for reading with others and I believe there is no better spot than Ocean Grove. It’s a cliché, but my favourite book is “Pride & Prejudice” by Jane Austen, with “Round Ireland with a Fridge” by Tony Hawks coming a close second”. The shop is light and bright, with easy to scan bookshelves,

a table with clusters of books atop it, shelves full of quaint teacups, teas in all kinds of flavours, gorgeous vintage home wares and of course pre-read books, with the quality of each item being of the highest importance. With biographies, classics, travel, romance, cooking, crime and suspense novels, there is a book in store to suit everybody! A Book Circle will be held in store on the first Tuesday of every month (the first meeting was due to take place on Tuesday April 5 at 10.30am). “The Book Circle will be an informal and relaxed affair. With no set book list there is the opportunity to discuss a wide range of books and broaden peoples reading attitudes.” There is also a large selection of quality loose teas. Classics such as Jasmine, Peppermint,

Earl Grey, Lemon Mint and Chai and will make the perfect compliment to the quiet time spent reading. There are varieties that can become your new favourites, such as Chocolate, Aloe Vera, Spiced Plum, Autumn Glow, Whisky Shot and an interesting blend of Strawberries and Champagne. There is even a tea for marriage! All teas come in gorgeous packaging, with a range that comes in a small packet for $2 each. Caffeine free teas are also available, as are flower blooming teas, which are guaranteed to give the tea drinker a unique experience. As an opening special, there are a number of books where if you buy two, you will get the third free and prices start from just $1. Books on Parade is open seven days and is located at 1/96 The Parade.

SIGNED AND SEALED: Kelsie and Sam have taken up the SEAL challenge.

“Its reasonably rigorous testing trying to separate all the top kids, the test is set by the University of New South Wales as virtually a scholarship test,” Mr Thomas said. “We interview both students and their parents; one of the factors of SEAL is the academic side and the other is their work habits at home, and their

enthusiasm to learn is really important too.” Mr Thomas said the program was not only for academic kids, but attracted many students who had a wide range of interests and were gifted in other areas, including sport. “This group this has been the most diverse we’ve ever had,” he said. Sam said he would recommend

the program for anyone who may feel unchallenged by their grade six school work. “I’d say go for it ‘cause there’s such a wide range of things they can do especially for kids coasting through year six,” he said. 2012 SEAL applications close at the end of term one. Visit www.bellarinesc.vic.edu. au

Go Grubbers

Ocean Grove Football Club preview DAYLIGHT savings is over, the temperature is dropping and the lawns don’t need to be mowed every half hour. Footy must be close. After solid performances over the preseason and some active recruiting over the summer, people around town are thinking finals for the Grubbers. ‘We’d be aiming to win at least two out of every three games this year,’ says senior coach Cameron McGregor. ‘Which makes twelve wins, so yeah that should have us in the finals.’ ‘Along with the eight or nine new players we’ve picked up this year, we’ve also got Rohan O’Callaghan who’s coming back from a broken leg. He only played two games last year so he’s like a new recruit.’ O’Callaghan is a playing assistant, and along with another playing assistant Shane Jack (new to the club this year) and Mathew ‘Tissa’ Tyrell, completes the coaching panel looking to advance the club into the finals. Tissa joins the senior coaching ranks after coaching the under 18s to a trifecta of flags in the last three years, where he became famous for his colourful and impassioned half time addresses. The success of the under 18s in the

last few years highlights the strength of the clubs depth. ‘Along with our new recruits, we’ve got five or so players in the seniors who’ve come through that system,’ says McGregor. ‘And others in the 18s who will probably get a game through the year, as well as players like Sean Britt, fresh out of the under 18s, who put his hand up for first round selection with a strong game against Strathmore.’ The first game of the season is away to Portarlington on April 9, before a big game against Anglesea at home the following week. The anticipation for this game is already building. ‘Anglesea beat us quite convincingly early in the season last year and ultimately took our spot in the five. We’d be looking to return the favour this year,’ says McGregor, with determination and confidence in his voice. At the same time he notes Anglesea have picked up some good talent in the off season. ‘I’m looking forward to the game.’ With the makeshift ruck division of last year replaced by a genuine ruckman in Tom Foott this year, and some extra talent added all over the ground, Grubbers fans should be too.

Ben Ricardo.

Pacific Gull on the Southern Ocean PACIFIC Gulls are commonly seen in Ocean Grove around the Barwon River Estuary and also on the main beach. The Pacific Gull is a large (58-66 cm) seabird, with black wings, white front, yellow legs, and a large yellow and red bill. A young Pacific Gull has brown and black feathers and a black bill. The Pacific Gull is smaller than an albatross, which can grow to a metre in length, but larger than a Silver Gull (Common Sea Gull), which is usually about 40 cms in length. Pacific Gulls are usually seen alone or in pairs, not in large flocks like seagulls. The Pacific Gull is endemic to the Australian coastline, from Western Australia, right around the south coast of Australia, to northern New South Wales. The gull prefers to live in areas where there are sandy beaches and estuaries, so we have a perfect habitat here in Ocean Grove for Pacific Gulls. Pacific Gulls feed on

BARWON COAST

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest 13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast’s draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists has been on display for comments and submissions. Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC. Whilst the period of time for the lodging of submissions has now closed, details are still available on our web site www.barwoncoast.com.au Our Committee members are reviewing all 119 submissions prior to deciding on the next stage of this project. Dog Free Beaches The dog free beaches declaration changed on 1st February with dogs allowed back on the Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), but they must be on a leash until the end of April. This also applies to the Barwon River beaches. From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective

control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. There are some sections of beach where dogs are prohibited all year around including west of 40W on 13th Beach which is a known Hooded Plover nesting area. There are from time to time other areas temporarily fenced off when a Hooded Plover nest / scrape is found and we ask that dogs be put on a leash in such areas. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Ocean Grove Main Beach When the seawall and promenade at the Ocean Grove Main Beach was rebuilt in 2009, new terracing was constructed beside the amenity block and beach access. The terracing was “completed” with a course sand surface rather than grass, acknowledging the then existing water restrictions and drought conditions. Work has recently commenced on replacing the coarse sand with kikuyu grass (drought tolerant) that will be laid (in rolls) across the area this week. Sheepwash Classic Fun Run This year will see the 30th Anniversary running of the Sheepwash Classic Fun Run and for the fifth consecutive year we are taking the opportunity to further support our local community by sponsoring the naming rights for the event which is a significant part of the Barwon Heads Primary School Easter Fair. Additionally we will sponsor the first prize both male and female in Fun Run for the 15th consecutive year. We look forward to your participation and enjoyment of the natural environment during the Barwon Coast Sheepwash Classic Fun Run on Saturday 23rd April as the course winds its way through the coastal reserve, the caravan park , onto the beach and back to the school. A slightly different course is planned for this year including running across the new pedestrian bridge and continues with last year’s addition of a full lap of the trail around the top of the Barwon Heads Bluff. Great views if you are not running to hard! I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads

ALTMANN PULLING INTO CHOOK SHOP Multi-Instrumentalist Chris Altmann is in town on Saturday night on tour with the Wildes. The South Australian is playing the Chicken Shop after Saturday’s Festival. Altmann’s sound is influenced by the Texas border town grooves of Doug Sahm and Jerry Jeff Walker, combined with the up-tempo country rock beats of Chuck Berry and Levon Helm. Altmann released his debut solo album, ‘Que Paso’, in September 2010 on his newly formed record label, Ridin’ High Records.

DAWSON TO ROCK GROVE FESTIVAL JO Dawson will headline this weekend’s Ocean Grove Festival in the Terrace. This fourth annual music and community festival boasts a full line up on two busy stages. Sharing the main stage with Dawson is Guthrie Pastiche, Rory Ellis and local ska band Ska Bang – and more. While a community stage at the Hodgson Street end will include drum workshops, dance and live music from Ocean Grove youngsters from 10am until 4pm. The street will also include market stalls, aboriginal art for kids and and an art display.

The main stage music will kick off at 1pm with Shannachie. A big feature of the festival will be the annual busking competition, buskers will be competing between 10am–12.30pm with the winner announced outside the chicken shop 12.30pm. Great prizes! Other acts on the main stage will be Michelle Meehan who recently performed at Port Fairy Folk Festival and is representing the winning band ‘Shannachie’ from 2010 busking comp, folk singer/guitarist Jill Meehan and local accomplished flautist Howling wind. Headliner Jo Dawson will be a huge treat

for Ocean Grove. Growing up in Torquay provided the perfect backdrop and inspiration for Dawson to explore and develop her song writing. Now based in Melbourne, the fruits of those years are about to be realised with the imminent release of her debut Album. The depth and honesty found in Jo’s strong lyrics are fuelled by dynamic grooves and driving guitars and will entice you into her world. Equally at home performing delicate ballads through to raw, edgy rock, Jo Dawson can only be described as the real deal. The secret is out! Jo is busy playing to sold

out shows in Melbourne and interstate supporting some of the biggest names in Australian music (You Am I, The Beautiful Girls, James Reyne and more). When she hits the stage you will be captivated by the honest talent of this amazing songwriter. Her band: Andy Welsh/guitar, Stuart Jaymes/Drums and Gary Soloman /Bass, provide the perfect chemistry to deliver Jo’s stories. Jo Dawson is set to write a new and exciting page in the chronicles of Australian Rock History and will play Ocean Grove on her way there.

It has been fifteen months filled with a constant flow of devoted regulars and visitors from far and wide. Word of mouth has been a big part of their success, with conversation of the “Elk place” happening amongst foodies in Melbourne and Sydney. The media attention and awards received have just been the icing on the cake, or should I say the icing on the passionfruit sponge. The latest award being, the Age Cheap Eats - 2011 Country Cheap Eats Champ. These are some of the things Cheap Eats had to say.” Take a bow Bellarine, Wallington has landed on the foodie Map and it’s down to top new places Like Elk Horn...” and “‘Where’s Wallington?’ could almost be a boredom –busting game on the drive to Ocean Grove, but the excellent Elk Horn just might put the little known farming community on the map.” Owners Terri Bitton and Julie Taylor said “ thank you to our loyal customers, our wonderful staff and our suppliers that help make Elk Horn that little place we all love going to”. necessarily correctly) they can further their careers elsewhere. Matching the football club’s recruiting of ruckmen Tom Foott, Tracey has secured the services of his younger sister Elkanah. “We’re pleased she’s come back. She played all her juniors here, but had two years away in a higher league. She’ll play forward.’ Tracey has also created a development squad from the under 19s. It contains five girls who’ve done the majority of the pre-season. Two of them, Maddie Morris and Lauren Ollis, will play in the A side, while the other three, Sally and Lucy Hood, and Molly Murray will play in the B team as well as in the under 19s. There will be room for advancement and other

girls to join the group over the year. “It will be a very steep learning curve, but there are plenty of opportunities for those girls who listen and grow as players throughout the season.” Emma Doolan, a player from the under 17s, is also a chance to see some senior netball gametime. “She did heaps of the preseason and is a good goaler, but has unfortunately got glandular fever so we’ll have to wait and see on her through the season,’ Tracey said. The preseason has been an arduous one. “I had 48 girls in training, but it dropped to 18 three weeks ago when other coaches started their seasons. I have to acknowledge all the hard work team manager Jackie Montgomery is doing too. She

has been great so far and a big help. She played last year but hurt her knee. “All in all I’m feeling really positive about the year and the girls are too.” On the whole club, Director of Netball, Jo-Anne Britt said: “We are proud to say we have teams for every one of the 120-plus girls who have participated in selection trials over the past few weeks. Every age group is well represented with Ocean Grove fielding 13 Junior and 4 senior teams in total. Twelve teams will follow the football on a Saturday and a further five teams will play under Netball Geelong on brand new courts at Kardinia Park.” The first game is away to Portarlington on April 9, the first home game is the following week against Anglesea.

TRACEY Thorley is looking forward to taking her young netball side through the season and hopefully to the finals. The team, like the clubrooms, has had a makeover, with Paula and Tina Birch the only remaining senior players from last year. Tracey’s competitive spirit makes her want to win every game but as long as the girls take her instructions on board and learn and gel throughout the year she’ll be happy. “I can’t ask for more than that can I?” she asked, rhetorically, when speaking with the Voice on Friday night. Tracey has turned to youth this year to fill the senior sides. “We’ve got a really healthy list now, but the average age of the girls is 19,” she said, lamenting the difficulty of retaining players at the club when they are convinced (not

IT’S been a great start to 2011 for the 13th Beach Boardriders. The Junior State Rounds have been completed with 13th members doing extremely well. As mentioned in an earlier article, Gus Harfield took out the Under 18 State Title. Congratulations must also go to young gun Henry Hutchins who won the Under 13 Title. An outstanding second place at Phillip Island in the last round of the competition , saw Henry’s sister Jermima finish third in the under 16 Girls Championship, a wonderful effort considering she was bottom age for this age group. These achievements are a fantastic result and a great deal of credit has to go to the surfers

for their determination and also the fantastic 13th coaching team that has supported them. At the recent State Teams Titles, also held at Phillip Island, the 13th Team finished runners-up to eventual winners Torquay. The 13 competitors of the 13th Beach team pushed the strong Torquay team all the way to the final hooter only narrowly being defeated. Great Performances by Josh Johnson Baxter, Gus Harfield and Cam Lamperd in the Power Heats put the 13th team in a strong position from the start but the depth and competitive experience of the Torquay surfers proved too much for the local team. Look out next year Torquay!

The first two comps of the 2011 have been run and won. Comp 2 created great local interest when it was held at Mick’s Steps, on Ocean Grove’s Main Beach in fun 2 to 3 foot onshore waves. There was a great club turn out with some very impressive surfing. The divisional winners were:

Cody Open Women: Ash, Lizzie, Cassie, Paige Open A: Josh J-B, Ben C, Simon C, Shawn T

U13 Boys: Billy, Henry, Fergus, Joe U13 Girls: Katherine, Isabella, Jamilla Cadets: Will, Bronson, D’arcy, Charlie, Junior Women: Cassie, Paige Junior Men: Cody, Kajeera, Austin, Charilie Senior Men: Matt T, Cam L, Thommo & Gerrit Masters: Hutto, Mark W, Nat & Steve D Open B: Leigh B, Ethan, James J,

The Micro Groms had an awesome Expression Session, also at Mick’s steps on the Friday evening prior to the main comp. Zeph and Jett L, Archie T, Jack B, Fletcher F, Elly H, Dominique O and Jem H, all rocked and blew the spectators away with their go for it surfing! The young girls and guys had a load of fun and are showing plenty of promise and talent. For all club information, photos and gossip, head to the club’s Facebook page. See you in the surf Gaz

out to be a lot of fun. This event incorporated the Ladies day and each team had Woman captains and all teams ended up with at least 2 female surfers. A great effort from all the girls on such a day. Heather Peck provided some training and surfing tips for all the girls and everyone found it

beneficial no matter what level of surfing they are at. The next club comp has been changed to Sunday April 17. Meet at Ocean Grove Main car park 7am. For more info go to www. soullongboardclub.com.au or find us on facebook.

Fun start to SOUL season

SOUL Longboard club kicked off its 2011 season in what could only be described as less than favourable conditions at Ocean Grove Main Beach. Once again after a week that had so much promise (especially with Wednesday being what some people are saying that it

was as good as it gets) the club was greeted with a cold blustery south west wind and a big lumpy Ocean. The club members, about 40 of them, were keen to get things underway and by about 9am they had formed into 5 teams and had a team’s challenge day all organised, which turned

Pre-season promise

RED Trevean’s cousin Mick Trevean, wife Claire, three children Ted, Bonny, Will, and Digby Morrell, accepting the memorial shield.

STR ATHMORE narrowly overcame the Grubbers in a physical contest in wintry conditions on Saturday 19 March. In doing so they helped their club retain the Red Trevean Shield. In their second practice game of the year, kicking with the aid of a cold southerly blowing down the ground, the Grubber’s started well with the first two goals of the game. Strathmore played a man behind the ball and

defended strongly before answering with a couple of goals of their own. Pressure was good from both sides all game, it being apparent early that we were in for a more physical contest than that seen the week before against the Hampton Rovers. Featuring a couple of former AFL listed players, including Ty Zantuck, Joel Reynolds and John Dorian, Strathmore dominated early in the second

quarter and scored two quick goals. Strathmore captain-coach, former North Melbourne player Digby Morrell didn’t play but was vocal on the boundary line. The grubbers steadied. They kicked three unanswered goals through good pressure and capitalised on Starthmore’s resulting turnovers. Sean Britt, in his first year of senior footy after playing under 18s last year, stood out on the far

wing with clean hands and some long accurate kicks into the forward line. At the main break Ocean Grove were five points up, a fair representation of the evenness of the contest. A dominant third term with the breeze saw the Grubbers go up as much as twenty points. The style of footy the club is seeking to play this year was exemplified by some swift movement from half back, through the corridor to goal. The side’s forward line pressure was also a standout. To Strathmore’s credit they hung in there and kept the margin to within 15 points at three quarter time. What had been a physical contest all day went up another notch in the last quarter. Ocean Grove’s pressure took its toll on more than the opposition when a hurried Strathmore kick sailed over the boundary and took out a spectator’s gin and tonic.

It wasn’t quite enough though. With the aid of the breeze in the last quarter Strathmore made their charge and hit the lead with seconds to go. They won by five points. Grubber’s coach Cameron McGregor was rightly upbeat after the game. “We saw two better, stronger sides go at it this week so we definitely got more out of the game than we did last week even though we lost.” Fitness was one of the side’s strengths last year and McGregor expects it will be the same this year. “We’re probably as fit as we were last year but our skills are up. We’re already seeing less turnovers and our goal accuracy is at 6070 per cent compared to 40 per cent last year.” McGregor’s one complaint for the day was a lament for his own fitness. “I was running the boundary at 8:30 this morning for the under 16s. My knees are shot.” By:Hamish Brooks

Stats man with stats THERE used to be sign up in Ocean Grove, on the way in from Wallington, which welcomed travelers to the town. In the mid sixties it read: Population 1,000. When Peter Keating, the long serving OGFC stats man, was born it read 1,000 plus 1, thanks to the initiative of a cheeky uncle. Little did the uncle know then that the way the town of Ocean Grove first got to know of Peter, as a very visible stat, would be synonymous with his life. His fate was sealed. Peter began taking stats at the Ocean Grove footy club in 1986 when he was 17. His brother was playing in the under 18 side and he used to come down to watch. ‘I loved watching footy and grew up around the club because dad played there through the 70s. I wasn’t much taken with the physical stuff so I didn’t play,’ recalled Peter. “The under 18s side was coached at the time by Dennis Wall, who worked part time at Collingwood and Geelong. He wanted the stats done and I felt I was pretty good with numbers so I put my hand up.” Wall obviously liked what he saw and

recommended him for a job to Col Hutchinson, who is now the head statistician of the AFL, but at the time was doing the stats at Geelong. For a lifetime Geelong supporter this was a serendipitous turn of events indeed. “I got to meet and know many of my childhood heroes,” said Peter. “When I was a boy I had my photo taken with (former players) Ian Nankervis and Terry Bright. When I started doing the stats at Geelong, Nankervis was the reserves coach. He lived in Ocean Grove and drove me into Geelong where I’d travel into the game on the team bus. Before that Michael Turner (wingman in Geelong’s official Team of the Century) used to drive me in.” Peter’s time at Geelong took in the tenure of coaches John Devine, Gary Ayres, Malcolm Blight and a year with Bomber Thompson. “When Bomber came on board he brought his own stats men. I’d been doing the video editing of the games for the club for three years but got relegated to just doing the reserves stats. I wasn’t

enjoying myself so I left.” Geelong’s loss proved to be Ocean Grove’s gain. Since 2000, Peter has been doing the stats every weekend on a voluntary basis. The system has evolved over the years, for both the AFL clubs and Peter. “Back in the late seventies they used to have one stats person for each player, then they reduced the number by having people watching and calling the stats and others writing. Now with computers it has changed again.” As a one man stats band, Peter’s workload is considerable. “On the Saturday, I watch both the reserves and seniors and call the stats into a voice recorder. Then on

Sunday I spend five to six hours laying it all out in Excel and get it to the coaches on the Monday or Tuesday.” Just about every stat you can think of is observed and collated by Peter. Listening to him speak his AFL experience is obvious. Whilst he records the obvious stats of kicks and handballs, he also gets for the coaches the more complex team oriented stats of clearances, inside fifties, handball receives, missed and made tackles, hard and loose ball gets, and marks inside fifty both defensively and offensively. Peter watches the game from the other side of the ground because the crowd noise can interfere

with the recorder. He watches it outside and in spite of some fierce weather has only been forced to stop doing the stats once. “Not last Easter but the one before, the game started late, a storm came in, the second half was played in pitch darkness and pouring rain. That’s the only time I threw in the towel.” So other than being good with numbers and largely impervious to the weather, what’s it take to be a good stats man? ‘Good concentration. Most people who try to do it fail because they get caught up in the game. Most players the club gets to do it can’t because they become so involved,” said Peter.
