PLANS FOR TOWN GET-TOGETHER

PARK PICNIC ACCLAIMED author Graeme Base easily won over his young Ocean Grove audience last week. A long line of children - some dressed as pirates - turned out to get their signed copy of The Legend of the Golden Snail during his visit on Thursday.

A PICNIC in the park could become a annual community celebration if the organisers have their way. The aim of the picnic is to give local community groups a chance to showcase themselves to the wider town. The event on Saturday November 27 is being organised by Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, Ocean Grove Business Association and Ocean Grove Community Association in partnership with Ocean Grove Rotary. Co-organiser Richard Grimmett said that local groups, clubs and associations are being encouraged to bring display and picture boards to the event that will pick up on the momentum generated by Celebrate ‘58 two years ago. That event brought local groups together in a way that hadn’t been seen in decades. “We would love it to become an annual event. “We want Ocean Grove people to use it as a place to catch up with friends and get out and enjoy the park.” Continued page 3.

Son’s legacy for life and hope

Jenny McLachlan.

AN Ocean Grove mum is using her art to keep her son’s memory alive and help others. Jenny McLachlan is holding a painting exhibition at Newtown’s Café Silk to raise money for Alstrom Syndrome International (ASI) on the last weekend in November. Jenny’s son Heath passed away from Alstrom Syndrome in 2005 aged just 23 years old. He was the only person diagnosed with the disease in Australia at the time.

opportunity to give back to the organisation. “My legacy is to raise the money and send it back to the other children who are suffering from the disease,” she said 100 per cent of the profits from her exhibition will go to AIS with the money going towards research, computer programs and giving sufferers a better quality of life. The McLachlan’s wanted to let the Ocean Grove community know that Heath’s memory is alive and his family is doing well.

“I miss him a lot,” said Jenny. Alstrom Syndrome is a very rare genetic disease that sees its sufferers struggling with blindness, hearing loss, heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver and scoliosis. The disease is caused by a gene mutation passed down through families and has no known cure. After receiving support from ASI during their struggle with the disease, Jenny wanted to have the

“I still have people in Ocean Grove who ask ‘how is your son going?’ and I have to tell them he passed away,” Jenny said. “I’m in a good place

right now and my artwork is my savior,” she said. Jenny has been painting for the past four years and has over 50 pieces at present, many of which will be for sale at the exhibition. Janelle Jurcic from Café Silk has donated the space for the exhibition which will open Friday November 26 from 6pm until 9pm with nibbles and drinks and continue Saturday and Sunday. On World Sight Day, Thursday, October 14, Majella will donate her eye exam fees to help provide eye exams and glasses to children

who can’t see to learn at school and adults who can’t see to provide for their families. Optometry Giving Sight, the organiser of the World Sight Day Challenge, funds programs that train local eye care professionals and develop vision centres which provide permanent vision care to

people in desperate need. There are 670 million people who are blind or vision impaired simply because they don’t have access to an eye examination and glasses they need. “I have supported Optometry Giving Sight for 3 years and am proud to support such a worthwhile

I was delighted to be present at the announcement of 284 new weekly local bus services as part of an $80 million State Government package to improve frequency of services and serve the growing Geelong region which will begin on Monday, 25 October. Enhancements to the Bellarine transit network will see services improved in Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff, Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Portarlington and St Leonards. As I move around the Bellarine, many constituents have told me that increased bus services will be very welcome, so it is great to be able to provide these details: Route 76 Queenscliff to Geelong via Ocean Grove

Grants available to share your community history I am aware that Ocean Grove and the surrounding areas has

a long and interesting history, and I am encouraging community groups to apply to share in $350,000 in funding to preserve and share local stories. Applications are now open for community groups to apply for grants of up to $12,000 for individual projects as part of the latest round of the State Government’s Local History Grants Program. These grants provide an opportunity to build on some of the great work already being done locally by volunteers in the Ocean Grove community. This area has a rich history and I encourage local not-forprofit groups to consider what projects could be done locally to help ensure our history can be preserved and passed on to future generations. Applications are now open and close on Friday, 19 November, 2010. For details, visit www. prov.vic.gov.au/lhgp/ welcome.asp or phone

Former Ocean Grover Michael Menzies looks out from one of the carriages that he has helped save.

Back on track A Dare Street home was demolished last week but not before a surprising piece of history was carefully preserved. The two bedroom fibro/ concrete home had been built around two Victorian railway carriages dating back to 1898. The house was set to be completely demolished but purely by chance, Puffing Billy Preservation Society (PBPS) ex President, John Thompson was informed and was able to stop the process before the carriages were destroyed. “It’s an incredible fluke that an association member drove past on Sunday and happened to see the asbestos cladding had been removed,” John said. “It would have been matchsticks by now if we hadn’t of known.” Past Ocean Grove resident, Michael Menzies is involved in local railway history through Queenscliff and after keeping an eye on the house for many years, was able to tip John off to the house’s imminent destruction. “I rang a mate of mine from the Puffing Billy and said ‘hey you better get down here first thing Monday morning’,” he said. “It was one of the worst houses

in a good street; it was inevitable it would be knocked down to make room for units which I believe what is happening now.” Michael first discovered the carriage house as a 10 year old in the early 1960s. He was helping his father who owned the local timber and hardware shop at the time, make a delivery to the house. He said he was unsure whether they were the original owners at the time who could’ve shed some light on how the carriages ended up in Ocean Grove. “I’m not sure if it was the original family tarting it up or new owners doing work on the house,” he said. The carriages are an End Loading, built in about 1898 and Compartment believed to have been built in 1910. They are nestled in the middle of the house but are 70 per cent intact with many original fixtures according to John who discovered them 25 years ago when the house was up for sale.

Railway enthusiasts on the other side of the bay plan to restore 19th century two carriages.

“The conditions of the carriages haven’t changed since then, they’ve been protected by the house,” he said. Michael said that it’s likely they have spent almost 70 years protected from the elements by the house that was built around them. “It’s amazing they’ve survived as long as they did,” he said. After researching their history back in 1985, John discovered

the carriages were used by the Victorian Railways as Narrow Gauge rolling stock moving from line to line as they were needed throughout the early 1900s. They were then decommissioned in about 1938 before being sold off at auction to the public, many of whom built them into their homes. The original owner of the 80 Dare Street property is still unknown and John hopes he can jog someone’s memory about how the carriages ended up in Ocean Grove. “I’d like to know where they got them from and even how much they paid for them,” he said. Although the recovery of the carriages will be a careful and expensive process, John said that preserving the railway history was worth it in the end. He even hopes that one day they will be restored to working order and used in the not-forprofit rolling museum that is Puffing Billy located in the Dandenong ranges. “It’s going to cost a lot of money to get them and restore them,” he said. “We want to give them the opportunity for a better future.”

Static staples shocker OCEAN Grove supermarkets are flying the face of inflation and keeping their prices lower than this time last year, writes Carly Helweg.

A mystery shopper comparison of Ocean Grove’s Coles and Safeway supermarkets has seen a basket of everyday home-brand items cheaper now to buy than it was in 2009. However, some of Safeway’s individual prices have succumbed to price increases meaning local customers will be worse off at the checkout on staples like bread and milk. Local shopper Leanne Jemmett knows the meaning of a bargain when it comes to her grocery shopping and uses catalogues to get the best deals. ”I have found that prices have gone down,” she said. The Jemmett family also uses Aldi stores to buy their fresh fruit and vegetables and any other items where brand names aren’t an issue. “I actually shop at all three, Coles, Safeway and Aldi, and I hunt out the specials at Coles and Safeway,” she said. “With the home-brands I give everything a go and if it’s no good I go back to the brand names but I always buy the brand names on special.” Have you noticed price rises at the supermarket? Do you have any shopping tips to get the most out of your money? Email us at journo@oceangrovevoice.com.

Old CFA base still to be offices THE empty Ocean Grove fire station will be given a new lease of life next year. It has been two years since the site was auctioned off to Ocean Grove resident Roger Davies and locals have been discussing uses for the empty building ever since. It has now been revealed that the building will be turned into three offices with work potentially beginning early 2011. Roger said he was in the process of getting permit approval from Geelong City Council to begin the

renovation. “We want to name it the Ocean Grove Business Centre,” he said. “There will probably be an accountant and a solicitor put in there.” The existing building will remain and the outside will be rendered to give it an updated look. Roger debunked the rumours that the building contained asbestos and couldn’t be pulled down. “We had the fire department come through and the only asbestos was in the power box,” he said.

Joel Humm, Drysdale “It’s a tough one. A music venue because they only have the chicken shop and then they could have proper gigs.”

Mel Bratan, Drysdale “Maybe a medical centre, because when you go to the one up here they’re always busy.”

timing’s been pretty good there! I’ve been a Cats supporter since birth, even though I was born in Melbourne and spent most of my life in either Gippsland or Melbourne. My paternal grandfather, y’see, was a Geelong boy, St Augustine’s. I joined the Geelong Vietnam Veterans sub-branch and met another great bunch of people. Then Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads Lions, which has a great mix of locals and “blow-ins” like me. Most importantly, I met my wonderful partner Christy, a Geelong girl from way back. I love the fact that the peaceful country atmosphere in Ocean Grove is a perfect place to write. I wrote my play here, Foxholes of the Mind. It premieres at La Mama Courthouse theatre in Carlton on November 10. Hopefully I’ll see you there one night over the following fortnight. Go to www.lamama. com.au for bookings. I love the fact that Ocean Grove is growing. Without growth, without young people, a village loses its vibrancy and dies. It just seems to me to be incredibly selfish to placard against progress, because it’s a spike through the foot of youth.

Peter Thomas, now of Torquay, I began my own public relations and marketing company while at the same time working on my novel Best We Forget. I worked with small companies, large internationals, governments. I enjoyed one intense period as PR co-ordinator for Jeff Kennett’s privatisation of Victoria’s state owned enterprises, even though it damn near killed me. I worked with accounting firms, showing them how to market themselves. Accountants, I discovered, had exceptional skills but no idea how to “sell” them. My dad was one, and he was the same. And occasionally I got to go marlin and shark fishing with my mates from the Victorian Game Fishing Club based at Aspendale or stalk giant flathead in the shallows at beautiful Mallacoota. My brothers and sons are still trying to knock off my family flathead record, 12 lb. 5 oz. And so to Ocean Grove. I signed up for membership with the Cats, bought seats in the then new Hickey Stand, and still love it. There’s Daryl and Narelle one side of us and and Ron and Sharon on the other. Nice people, Cats’ supporters. Mind you, my

although I have been told that muscle singlets are best left to much younger blokes. Ahh, the freedom! I managed to find a pad close to both beach and main street so I learned to walk again, rather than put my bum in the car without even thinking. I joined Lonsdale Golf Club and later 13th Beach Golf Links, both fantastic golf clubs full of charming people and world class golf holes. Do we really know hereabouts how lucky we are? Not often do I reflect on days past ... 1968-69, the Army, national service, 12 months in Vietnam and a world gone mad. Home, sanity, a move to Melbourne to the sports desk at the old Sun News Pictorial in Melbourne. They were fun days, when the paper was at its peak, working variously as sports and general sub editor, Design and Production Editor, Supplements Editor, Group Foreign Editor, working with blokes of the superb calibre of the Addy’s Simon Townley and one of the world’s great sports photographers, Clive Mackinnon, now in Point Lonsdale. But after 16 years it was time to move on and, with the help of

AUTHOR, playwright and journalist Bernard Clancy came to Ocean Grove nine years ago to begin an earnest pursuit of a PhD in beach bumming. When I first saw the beach I was absolutely stunned. I mean, wow, what a perfect place to study. And at low tide, there is no better beach in the world for cricket. And when the north wind blows, those perfect rollers! Wow again! My sons said “here, you silly old bugger, if you’re going to live at the beach, you’ve gotta have a boogie board” and handed over a still serviceable lump of foam son No.2 had used for years. And so I began my lessons. Firstly I walked into John the Barber’s shop in the arcade and he disposed of my corporate Melbourne hairstyle and replaced it with what we used to call a crewcut which probably exposed more skin than I would have wished but what the hell, I thought, I don’t have to worry about image any more. Goodbye combover, hello sunscreen. Indeed, that’s a very important first lesson in becoming a Beach Bum, PhD. Out with the bag o’ fruit, in with boardies, outrageous Ts and thongs,

Lighthouse Extra Virgin Olive Oil “Picual”, a Spanish style olive, won a Championship Award at the Sydney Fine Foods Award 2010. This is the second time our Picual has won this award, the first time in 2008. Our Picual trees are grown on the Northern side of the property in Grove 2 between rows 2-10 and rows 22-30. The trees produced over 8 tonne of fruit which has proved to have been a magnificent year for olives. Lighthouse Picual Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a smooth, rich & buttery style flavour, that is a favourite amongst many and is perfect for drizzling over salads and pasta’s or dipping with bread. Our olives are harvested using a mechanical shaker, with the oil being extracted the same day, unfiltered and naturally settled before being bottled to retain the natural antioxidants We use environmentally sustainable farming with no harsh chemicals and compost and recycle the waste from

processing. Lighthouse Extra Virgin Olive Oils are grown and processed on the 165 acre property overlooking Swan Bay where the 10,500 trees soak in the region’s cool temperate maritime climate, giving our olives a distinct character, aroma and flavour. This year was a record season for producing fruit. At Lighthouse Olive Grove we harvested 70 tonnes of olives and processed over 192 tonnes of olives from clients who bring their olives to us for processing. On the property is the Lighthouse Olive Mill Shop that stocks our range of Extra Virgin Olive Oils and a range of citrus oils that are produced using fresh lemons and limes that have been quartered and crushed at the same time as the olives to produce a zesty flavoured citrus oil. The shops also stocks a range of local wines, food products, giftware and cosmetics made from olive oil. The Olive Mill Shop is open Thur-Sunday from 11am – 4pm.

Ocean Grove Bowling C Let the bowling begin..

LAST Tuesday saw a replay of last year’s Division 1 Grand Finalists between Ocean Grove and Queenscliff in which the Coutas came out victors. Between showers and hail it was a very close contest with Queenscliff holding a slender lead at the half way mark. Pictured above are Ocean Grove’s Marion Brown and Marianne Rogan (Maz & Marianne), with Pat Virtue and Faye Richardson inset.

OCEAN Grove Bowling Club is gearing up for an exciting season of competitive and social bowling, writes Mark Heenan. The premier division side has already launched their new pennant season with an away trip to Ballarat on Saturday. The A-Grade Club Grove team took on the Victoria Bowling Club in Ballarat with the home team defeating the visitors in Round one of the Geelong and District Bowls Association. The Victoria Bowling Club won with 16 points and 98 shots compared to Ocean Grove 2 points and 90 shots.

“It was a close game, it came down to the last couple of ends,” Ocean Grove Bowling Club and Development Officer Peter Nixon said. “Victoria were last year’s Grand Finalists.” Meanwhile six of the other seven Club Grove pennant teams begin their season this weekend after last Saturday’s round of matches were postponed due to the AFL Grand Final replay and UCI Road Cycling championships held in Geelong. In other news, Club Grove bowlers took part in the annual friendly Ocean Grove and Queenscliff challenge on Sunday at Queenscliff.

Harmony highs

Ocean Grove members of the Geelong Concords barbershop chorus: Andrew Johnston, Jimmy Duffield, Rod Swan and Chris Crook (Wallington).

THE Potato Shed will host The Geelong Bay City Conchords’ very first full concert on the Bellarine Peninsula this Sunday, October 10 at 2pm. A gold coin donation applies. The all-male chorus of around 24 members, aged from 27 to 85, is only one of two barbershop groups performing in Victoria – and includes several Ocean Grove locals. The Conchords are currently led by musical director Rod Stow, assisted by Major Chris Daria, US Army Air Force (ret), who bring a lifetime of experience to harmony in Geelong. In their fourteen year history The Conchords have established a reputation in Geelong and the Western District as a quality act with their individual style and ringing harmony. This was demonstrated at the National Barbershop Convention in Hobart late 2009, when the Conchords were placed second in the “most improved” division in Australia. Besides traditional barbershop harmony, the ConChords specialise in ballads, sacred music, show songs and novelty routines, backed by a range of solo performances. Re-incarnated at Dog Trumpet, O’Doherty and Mombassa will be performing Rivers of Flowers, a new album that has taken the brothers three years to write and record. It is their 5th release, the follow up to 2007’s Antisocial Tendencies and contains some of their most personal and autobiographical songwriting to date. Peppered with slide guitar, dobro and mandolin, a bit of Irish whistle and trumpet and congas thrown in for good measure, the musical palette on River of Flowers evokes lilting acoustic Irish folk, blues and country through to psychedelic rock and roll. Both contributed to Mental’s albums songs such as ‘Berserk Warriors’, ‘Egypt’, ‘Brain Brain’, ‘Apocalypso’, ‘Surf and Mull and Sex and Fun’ and ‘Psychedelic Peace Lamp’.

Colin steaks a claim THE Terrace’s meat trade is changing hands. Craig Henderson is moving on after six years at Henderson’s Meats for a change of scenery. “It’s time for a change,” he said. “I’ll stay in the industry, maybe the wholesale side of things.” The butcher shop is known nationally for their award winning chicken sausages giving new owner Colin Smith big shoes to fill when he steps in on October 1. “Our claim to fame is our sausages, the best chicken sausages in Australia,” said Craig. “Colin will continue the sausage legend.” Colin has moved down from Bendigo for a seachange and

brings 40 years of butcher knowledge and experience with him. “I’ve been trying to get (down) here for the last eight to ten years,” he said. Although the store will get a name change to Ocean Grove Quality Meats, Colin has given his guarantee that The Terrace’s only independent butcher will still give its loyal customers the products and service they are used to. “Basically we’re not going to change anything,” he said. Craig said that he is very grateful for the support

Craig Henderson, right, hands over the butcher’s snags - and the keys- to new owner Colin Smith.

his local customers have given him over the last six years. “I just want to thank

the customers for their support and hope they continue to support Colin who will continue along

the vein of supplying the best quality available, natural, free range meats,” he said.

Glenn Atten wants to put the gleam in the Grove.

LOCAL road bikes will have no excuse but to be gleaming thanks to Glenn Atten’s new venture. The keen-eyed bike enthusiast has launched a new business called Pride In Ur Ride, a bike detailing service. “I had a similar Part-Time set up for quite a few years in the UK and it is something I have always had a passion for - I have a meticulous eye for detail - friends would probably describe me as a perfectionist,” said Glenn.

“I get great satisfaction out of uncovering the full potential out of any vehicle both old and new.” Glenn and his wife Joanne emigrated to Australia four-anda-half-years-ago from the UK and settled and made Ocean Grove home. He said: “I am a keen motorcycle enthusiast and have a love of anything that shines and has wheels and an engine, much to my wife's dismay. “I do follow the motor sport

very closely and love the annual pilgrimage to Phillip Island. “Photography is another one of my pastimes and I am often seen out and about early to capture the local scenes that we are now so fortunate to be able to call home.” Pride In Ur Ride offers car and motorcycle detailing in Ocean Grove with regular weekly, fortnightly and monthly packages available, along with full detail packages.

Glenn is particularly keen to build up regular clients in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. His long term plans include offering restoration services to people with older bikes as well as paintwork /race rep and performance upgrades in conjunction with the detailing of vehicles. environment

Melodious messenger THIS week’s report is not about a sheep with a very dirty bottom (see photo), rather it concerns the black and white bird that is perched upon the sheep with the very dirty bottom- a Willie Wagtail. The Willie Wagtail is the largest of the Australian birds known as fantails, growing to about 22cms in length. It was widely featured in aboriginal traditional stories as either a bringer of bad news or a stealer of secrets! The Willie Wagtail is black and white (but doesn't barrack for Collingwood). It has a white throat and black feathers everywhere else except another white line of feathers above the eye. The Wagtail is appropriately named as it spends a great deal of time wagging the long tail feathers sideways. Willie Wagtails are widespread throughout Australia, except in Tasmania. They have adapted to living in urban gardens and wetlands, and are very commonly seen around Ocean Grove.

They are usually found in pairs. Willie Wagtails are very brave and actively defend their territory against bigger birds and even people. They feed on insects, and chase them and catch them while flying, and also catch them on the ground. They have been known to remove ticks from animals and eat them! The Willie Wagtail eats a wide variety of insects including butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, dragonflies, spiders, centipedes and millipedes. The Willie Wagtail's nest is woven from grasses, and amazingly covered with spider's web on the outside. The nest is lined with soft grasses, hair or fur on the inside; very comfortable for the offspring!). The soft lining of the nest is often taken directly from an animal (maybe this sheep with the very dirty bottom provided the wool to line this Willie's nest). The nest of the Willie Wagtail may be re-used from year to year.

Eggs are cream-coloured and speckled with grey and brown. The eggs are incubated by both sexes. The young birds stay with the parents until the eggs from the next clutch start to hatch. At this point they are driven away (life is tough out there in the trenches). If conditions are favourable, the pair of Willie Wagtails may raise up to four clutches in a single season. The Willie Wagtail has a very distinctive call, which is quite melodious. By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Maintenance during winter When the level of activity within the coastal reserves is at its lowest the opportunity is provided to undertake a range of maintenance activities and upgrades. Currently we are working on improving the beach access at 8W (Alderbaran Rd, Collendina) by constructing an additional section of steps across the top of the dunes replacing the old worn log and chain matting. This work should be completed by the end of October We have installed new drinking fountains at several locations around the coast and to date have installed fountain at the playground in Flinders Parade, Barwon Heads; at the BBQ’s on the Barwon Heads river foreshore near the main jetty and the Ocean Grove Main Beach access near the Dunes cafe. Another upgrade program currently underway has been the replacement of old picnic tables with new at several locations, and a further replacement is planned at the Ocean Grove Main Beach. With the continual movement of sand along the beaches we experience short term erosion at various locations. It is therefore very important not to accelerate erosion of the dunes by climbing up the unfenced sections of the dune face or running up and down the dune face for your exercise routine. Works on the Ocean Grove Spit You may have noticed a great deal of activity on the river side of the Ocean Grove Spit associated with the construction of the next stage of Barwon Water’s sewer main replacement program from Pt Lonsdale thru to Black Rock. Two projects are currently being undertaken - one being the boring under the Barwon River to take the new sewer main from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads and the other being construction of a new sewer main thru the Spit from the south end of the Riverview Family Caravan Park to the point when the river boring project will commence.

Whilst the construction programs continue over the next couple of months there will be considerable interruption to those walking, cycling along the trails thru the Spit as we need to keep those users away from the construction works. Two sections of temporary trail diversions have been constructed and signage installed and we ask for everyone’s understanding that these essential works need to be undertaken and the temporary pathways have been constructed for everyone’s safety. The contractors are required to reinstate the area prior to the summer camping season Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove – Update Despite the difficult weather conditions work is proceeding apace at the site of the new $1m amenity block project at the Ocean Grove Main Beach As previously advised this is our largest ever self funded project with the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. This project is the last major component of the Ocean Grove Main beach redevelopment project we commenced a decade ago starting with the relocation of the Surf Beach Road to the back of the coastal reserve, improving beach access safety for all visitors. In recent weeks the building has really taken shape with the roof installation, block work walls laid and rendered and the feature timber poles on the beach side of the building erected. Current works include the construction of retaining walls, access ramps including one constructed at the appropriate grade to suit persons of all abilities.. The major task of laying the concrete hard standing around the facility is about to commence and will feature both coloured concrete and exposed aggregate concrete. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

grove basketball

Mel’s got sting in her play OCEAN Grove local basketballer Mel Parncutt is loud, proud and happy to admit it. The vocal 18-yearold who is the current Bellarine Storm Under 20 captain won selection for the Corio Bay Lady Stingrays in the Country Basketball League (CBL) North Eastern Women’s competition which kicks off next month. The Bellarine Secondary College student said her passion and loud demeanor on court played a part in her being elevated to vice-captain of the Lady Stingrays in only her debut season. “On the court I’m just a loud person,” Parncutt confessed. “That’s probably one of the reasons I took on the captaincy with the Bellarine Storm.” The CBL is the country equivalent to Big V where the Geelong team play in winter and is considered a step above any youth league in Victoria.

Grove basketballer Mel Parncutt.

Other teams to compete in the CBL North Eastern League include Maryborough, Seymour , Mildura and Echuca. Corio Bay Lady Stingrays covers the wider Geelong region and Bellarine Peninsula area. Head coach of the Corio Bay Lady Stingrays, Bob Parker, said Mel’s achievement as the first Bellarine girl to make the Stingrays is a massive achievement for her development. Parker, a Portarlington

resident, is also coach of the Bellarine Storm Under 20 team and a former coach of the Geelong Lady Cats. “As coach of both the Bellarine Lady Storm and The Corio Bay Lady Stingrays I am really very proud of her achievement,” Parker said. “No one works harder on the training track than this kid – Mel Parncutt. “Players notice coming into the Stingrays how the way Mel works - her

work ethic, how hard she trains and how fit she is.” Parncutt will join new teammates from the Stingrays in the tough double road trip to Albury and Wodonga next month when the CBL North Eastern season starts on November 6. The Stingrays meet Wodonga on Saturday November 6 before backing up the next day in Albury on the Sunday. “I’d imagine we’d stop off to McDonalds on the way back to Geelong from

Albury and Wodonga, but I’m on a health kick but I eat too much junk,” Parncutt laughed. “There used to be a rule on a road trip that the coach pays if they win,” Parker said. Parker said while the Stingrays play their home games at the Life Be in Centre in South Geelong, there are plans to take one home game to the Bellarine Peninsula – Bellarine Sports Centre in Drysdale this season. Parncutt, a defender by nature, says her basketball idol is Prue Kenny, a Geelong basketballer who plays for the Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL (Women’s National Basketball League). Outside of Basketball, the sporty Parncutt works part-time with the Strapper surf shop in Ocean Grove. The budding youngster hopes to work and travel overseas in 2011 after she completes her VCE education this year. For more information on Bellarine Basketball programs contact the association on 5253 3377 or admin@bpba.org.au.

Rico’ to return BALL magnet Ben Ricardo re-joins the Grubbers in 2011 following his oneyear playing stint with Geelong West St Peters (GWSP) in the Geelong Football League this season, writes Mark Heenan. The 25-year-old left Ocean Grove at the completion of the 2009 season to pursue an opportunity with GWSP. Ricardo who finished in GWSP’s best and fairest award in 2010, joins former GWSP player Shane Jack, who takes up a playing assistant coaching role with the Grubbers in 2011. The lively on-baller who finished third in the club’s best and fairest in 2009, played 18 matches for the Grubbers last year and kicked 21 goals. “He is obviously a fantastic ball-getter,” Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor said. “Yes he has notified GWSP that he will be leaving the club and he has agreed to play for the Grubbers in 2011.” “He is 25 and he will add heaps to the playing group with our midfielders.” McGregor also played A-grade cricket with Ricardo last season at the Collendina Cobras. Ocean Grove captain James Dalton said Ricardo’s return to Ocean Grove will bolster their midfield stocks. Dalton, a multiple senior Best and Fairest winner at the Ocean Grove Football Club, admitted Ricardo’s second-half of 2009 was outstanding that he was surprised he did not take out the Grubbers best and fairest last year. “That is awesome news he is coming back to Ocean Grove,” Dalton said.

“No doubt he had a brilliant end to 2009, I was surprised I took out the b&f that year and finished above him.”

Wallington and Leopold line up ahead of their Twenty20 practice match on Saturday.

WALLINGTON completed their pre-season cricket preparations with a comfortable win over close neighbour Leopold in a friendly Twenty 20 match on Saturday. The three-hour game played in warm conditions at Wallington Recreation Reserve was shifted to Saturday morning to accommodate for the AFL Grand Final replay between St Kilda and Collingwood. Both teams were competing for the Bendigo Bank Perpetual Trophy. The Wallabies, who batted second, chased down Leopold’s modest target of 88 from their 20 overs, with the loss of five wickets and four overs to spare. Wallington trio Ben Atkinson (27), Calvin O'Brien (30) and Chris Barnett (26) all made valuable contributions with the bat. Wallington Cricket Club president Craig Connoley who thanked Bendigo Bank Leopold for their support, said there are plans to make it an annual fixture between the two clubs on the eve of a new cricket season. Bendigo Bank Leopold bank manager Chris Stepins helped organise the day’s events. “We want to play a shield match against Leopold prior to the start of next season – At their home ground,” Connoley said. “Bendigo Bank Leopold is supportive on helping us put on another game next season.” Leopold Cricket Club president Cameron Horne agreed with Connoley’s thoughts. “Yes it is a great idea – we’re happy to play again,” he said. “Saturday was such a warm day, it was a good day all round for both clubs.”

THE defending A-Grade BPCA premiers will be intending to back up for the 2010/11 season. Paceman Luke Veitenheimer who took 46 wickets @ 11.80 last season remains the key with the ball, while Corey Walter is a strong addition after spending three seasons with the Geelong Thirds. Expect the Cobras to be in the hunt for another title at the business end of the season. Last season: Premiers (Finished home and away season in 2nd position) Departures: Brendan Hall (health reasons), AJ Holland (Guild St Marys), Ewan Handley (Work commitments but may play second half of the season) Arrivals: Corey Walter (Geelong Thirds) Collendina coach Eddie Ellwood: “The guys are still hungrier than ever to back up their success from last year. We want sustained success from last season. It’s important for the top age junior cricketers to step into the seniors ranks and build the club. Corey Walter will be a valuable addition from the batting and bowling point of view.

have been in a long time. We destroyed our season in the first half of the season in 2009. We played better in the second half of the season although we did experiment and we had some untried players and lost some games. We’ll be gutted if we did not make finals in the A-Grade this season – our aim is to make the topfour .” WALLINGTON Wallabies Cricket Club

(Newcomb Bulls), Aaron Cotton (returns from Queensland) Wallabies coach Darren Cameron: “We have had a fantastic pre-season and it is time to make finals. We almost made finals last season, although we finished eighth we were only one game out of the finals. We have invested a fair bit of time into our young group – we have some talented players back at the club who are in their early 20’s.” THE REST OF THE BPCA

Rhys Zanoni.

Club THE Grubbers will be looking to improve its ninth place A-Grade finish after their disastrous 2009/10 season. Ocean Grove have gained some valuable recruits in the off-season with former Highton Heat player Lucas Cameron, a quality all-rounder, and Michael Gill taking on the reigns as coach and assistant coach respectively. Talented left-arm bowler Rhys Zanoni, a Leopold Cricket Club stalwart and Geelong Country Week cricket representative also joins the Grubbers for the upcoming season. Last season: 9th place Departures: None Arrivals: Lucas Cameron (Coach) (Highton), Michael Gill (Assistant coach) (Highton), Rhys Zanoni (Leopold), John McDonald (Murray cricket region) Ocean Grove president Lucas Baulch: “Very excited about the new season, in fact this has been the most excited I

Darren Cameron.

THE Wallabies will be eager to push for finals in the 2010/11 season under the guidance of Darren Cameron. Darren is the older brother of new Ocean Grove cricket coach Lucas Cameron. The dynamic brother duo of Christian and Kelvin O’Brien are expected to bolster the Wallabies’ batting line-up. Cameron believes the additions of Harrison, Cotton and Barnett will help their young side in 2010/11. Last season: 8th place Departures: Luke Wright (Modewarre) Arrivals: Christian O’Brien (arrives back from living overseas), Kelvin O’Brien (Corio Bay Cricket Club), Daniel Harrison (North Shore), Chris Barnett

BARWON Heads Seagulls Last season: 5th place Departures: None Arrivals: Tim Clarke (Queenscliff) and Mark Slater (St Joseph’s) Barwon Heads president Andrew Basevi: “Last year we snuck into the finals but it was a disappointing way to end the season after we won back-to-back A-Grade premierships in 2007/08 and 2008/09. Jason Mallet will take on the role as coach of the club for the new season. The addition of Tim Clarke from Queenscliff is great from all-round perspective and to gain Mark Slater will help our fast bowling stocks.” DRYSDALE Hawks Cricket Club Last season: 4th place Departures: None Arrivals: Matt Loughnane (Ballan) and Darren Fleet (Newtown) Drysdale coach Leigh Allan: “The pre-season has gone really well. Older brother Darren Cameron, who is the current coach of the Wallington Cricket Club, faces off against younger sibling Lucas, who takes over the coaching role at Ocean Grove Cricket Club this season. Lucas Cameron was appointed new playing coach of the Grubbers in June this year, after his stint with Highton Heat in the Geelong Cricket Association (GCA).

“Yeah it will be interesting playing against my younger brother Lucas who has taken on the Ocean Grove coaching role,” said Darren. “It is certainly going to feel a bit different – it’s a big thing for the family.” Saturday’s A-Grade one-day match between Wallington and Ocean Grove begins at 1:30pm at the Wallington Recreation Reserve. The local rivalry continues on Saturday when defending A-Grade premiers Collendina hosts nearby

neighbour Barwon Heads in a oneday game at Collendina. Barwon Heads and Collendina have won the past two A-Grade premierships and both teams remain strong favourites for this season’s title. Collendina, who defeated Queenscliff in last season’s BPCA A-Grade decider, lost to Barwon Heads in the BPCA A-Grade Grand Final in 2008/09. In other games Queenscliff hosts Drysdale, Portarlington travels to Barrabool, while Jan Juc plays at home to local Surf Coast rival Anglesea.
