THE average price for homes sold in Ocean Grove has increased by over $160,000 in the last year according to realestate.com.au. Local real

estate agents have reported a boost in sales over the last five months that has seen them

struggling to keep up with the demand for properties. “At the moment demand is outweighing supply… we can’t keep up,” said Ian Friend from

RT Edgar Real Estate in Ocean Grove. The boom in the town has come from the increase in different types of property purchasers, some of which haven’t been seen in the market since 2008. Friend said existing property

PAST and present residents of Ocean Grove are well represented in the cast of Geelong Repertory Theatre Company’s new production of the classic Irish comedy The Cripple of Inishmaan. Six of the people featured in the photograph were members of the former and much loved Ocean Grove Repertory Ensemble (OGRE).

OGRE donated significant sums of money to the Ocean Grove Park. It was due to lack of performance and rehearsal facilities in Ocean Grove that caused the demise of OGRE in 2003 after sixteen highly successful years and the migration of their talented performers to other theatre groups in the region. One of the OGRE members, Bryan Eaton

still living in Ocean Grove, is now President of Geelong Repertory Theatre Company. You can see The Cripple of Inishmaan at the Woodbin Theatre in Coronation Street, West Geelong just below one of the sponsors of the play, Irish Murphy’s. The shows starts on April 15, tickets from GPAC on 5225 1200.

OCEAN Grove and the surrounds are about to feature in a long over due documentary on William Buckley. The Extraordinary Tale of William Buckley premieres on ABC1 on Sunday 11 April and is the culmination of a determined and locally

brought up producer assisted by the local Wathaurong community. Presented by historian Michael Cathcart, this dramatised documentary tells one of Australia’s great untold stories. The story of a young English convict who escaped from the doomed

first settlement of Port Phillip Bay and became a Wathaurong tribesman, learning to hunt and fish and speak their language. When the English returned Buckley stood between two worlds about to collide. Logie winning coproducer Stephen Amezdroz has his heart in the tale, having grown up locally and incubated the yarn for 20-odd years. With a career spanning from Mad Max to Cold War documentaries, Amezdroz says the work has been a bit of a coming home. “This is

He was a survivor.” Stephen who started running the River Mouth fish restaurant by Barwon Heads bridge two years ago says he hopes the programme will conjure more interest in local history. Wathaurong education officer David Tournier was a consultant to the program. The program is screening at 7.30pm on April 11.

COMMENT

Realestate.com.au’s Local Voices website gives people the chance to brag about the place that they live or review a town and its livability. However looking up Ocean Grove and its reviews may cause locals some bafflement. Although we are the 4th ranked city in Victoria thanks to many positive reviews there is more than one person making claims about our town that makes me think they have confused us with Lorne or Toorak. “Ocean Grove is amazing I just wish I had enough money to live here and afford a mega yacht and a Ferrari,” wrote Drsteve. He also went on to gush about the multimillion dollar price tags on our homes, “A beautiful coastal suburb with mansions from 1.5 million to 10+ million dollar homes positioned on the coast.” I put it to any of the real estate agents in town to come up with a property that has ever sold in Ocean Grove for $10 million. The claims didn’t end there with no less than four more posts harping on about the need for a BMW and lack of children to be comfortable living in Ocean Grove. Kate86 even makes the claim that 90% of the houses in Ocean Grove have a river or ocean view... unfortunately for most of us that is not the case. It makes you wonder whether these people have only ever visited Ocean Grove in the middle of summer when tourists have been flashing their fancy cars up and down the coast (as they seem to like to do) and have judged the town’s liveability purely on those observations. Another theory is that we have a group of cunning locals putting up false claims to deter more people from settling in our little town? Carly Helweg

Continued from page 1. “For the first time in 18 months the holiday market has returned to Ocean Grove, mainly because of the economy,” he said. “Everybody talks real estate up as an investment.” The median price of properties has also increased due to the higher cost of many homes on the market. “There have been a number of properties over $1 million that

have sold recently,” said Friend. There are currently 18 properties in Ocean Grove listed as over $1 million for sale on realestate.com. au The attraction of an established town on the coast with growth potential and an abundance of facilities like Ocean Grove is proving a big draw card to buyers and ultimately driving up the price of houses in the area.

Enthusiastically seeking funding IT was a normal Friday afternoon in the Grove, sunny with light afternoon sea breezes. So why were so many teens wandering the streets with a sleeping bag and a purposeful look a couple of weeks ago? Nicki Dunne, program coordinator for the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre, has the answer. “We hosted our first sleepover at the Centre, as part of our Friday Dropin program for 12-17 year olds. The kids suggested it and they were all keen, so we ran with the idea. “We didn’t really know what to expect with more than a dozen young people ‘camping out’ at the Centre, but they were confident it would be fun – and they were right!” The Friday Drop-

in is one of six local community programs applying for a grant through the Ocean Grove Community Enterprise. The main purpose of the Community Enterprise, an initiative of the Bendigo Bank, is to help local groups access money for projects. Jon Mamonski, Chairman of the Community Enterprise, said all the grant applicants represent positive action and community spirit, “The philosophy is that we help ourselves in Ocean Grove. It’s great that we have a pool of money through the Community Enterprise to direct towards activities that might not otherwise be able to source money.” The Neighbourhood Centre is seeking financial

support for 12 workshops over 12 months for its Drop-in program, a hangout for teenagers every Friday night. Developed 12 years ago, Drop-in provides a safe place for teens and is supervised by qualified youth workers.

The program provides entertainment, health and wellbeing, excursions, a four-day camp to the Gold Coast, confidential help and support for young people. Other local groups applying for grants include the Ocean

Grove Callisthenics College, Carols in the Park, the Ocean Grove Community Market and the Open Mic Festival. The Community Enterprise will announce the recipients at a presentation ceremony on 22 April.

How to support the Community Enterprise

Helping out needn’t cost you a cent! Three ways you can contribute: 1. Nominate your new and/or existing Bendigo Bank accounts to support the Community Enterprise - the bank chips in money, not you! OR 2. Become a member of GMHBA OR 3. Join the Geelong Community Telco. OR you may wish to simply donate. Whichever method you prefer, just ask at the Bendigo Bank.

STAFF at Lake Imaging have raised over $6,200 to help the ongoing work of local community organisation Rainbow Riders. Lake Imaging has an a branch at the Trak Arcade in Ocean Grove. Rainbow Riders, an Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Centre based off the Barwon Heads Road at Connewarre, provides a unique, long term, clientfocused day program for disadvantaged young people in the Bellarine and Geelong area. The program aims to improve selfesteem, confidence and social skills, and encourages healthy choices, behavior modification, and anger management. Marketing Manager of Rainbow Riders Deb Hallmark said, “Rainbow Riders helps many disadvantaged children in the Geelong region and we have new children starting into our horse therapy programs all the time. The funds raised by all of the staff involved at Lake Imaging go a long way to helping us meet our overheads in assisting these children and without the help of this organisation, we would not be able to continue our farm and horse therapy program.” Craig Lightfoot, Partner at Lake said “Lake Imaging is committed to providing financial assistance to local charities through fundraising activities and the support of Lake Imaging staff. A formal fundraising committee was established in 2009 but we have raised just in excess of $70,000 in the past three years, staff have been dedicated to raising funds through chocolate drives, trivia nights, sausage sizzles and cocktail nights.

good friday appeal

Grove Good Friday nets more than $42k for RCH ‘thank you ocean grove’ MANNERIM CFA (above) celebrated 30 years of collecting money for the RCH Good Friday Appeal, raised $6,500.60. Appeal coordinators Michael and Stephen Beasley say they remember the brigade’s first collection day back in 1980. They held a bed sheet with two other brigade members at the Banks Rd and Bellarine Highway intersection, to allow motorists to throw money in on their way past. We raised about $200 dollars that day and the brigade members

were rapt. Yesterday, 30 years on, the brigade is raising thousands of dollars, which is an absolutely fantastic effort by all the volunteers. If not for the generosity from the communities of Mannerim, Marcus Hill, Swan Bay, Point Lonsdale and the holiday makers who visit the Bellarine Peninsula. our appeal efforts would be fruitless. Mannerim CFA we thank everyone so much for giving to the RCH Appeal.

OCEAN Grovers dug deep to help the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal raising a total of $42,290.50. The cash was pulled in by volunteer fundraisers who organised and collected throughout the year and culminated with some big push events ahead of the Easter weekend. Among the big totals were $3,206 at Collendina Caravan Park, $5,043 at the Mex auction, $15,590 between Ocean Grove, Wallington and Mannerim CFA,

$13,250 at Club Grove and a further $5,196.68 via the Well Bees at a local supermarket. Ocean Grove’s final tally is so large now it has it’s own mention on the Good Friday tally board. Local co-ordinator Alistair Drayton said: “It’s a great result. We would like to thank the community for their generosity and help. And thanks to the Ocean Grove business community for donating goods to be auctioned. “It has been a lot of hard work by a lot of people.”

REBECCA Miller and her team at Utopia hair salon donated takings from a recent Sunday to the Good Friday Appeal, partly in thanks to the help the hospital has given her and her nine-month-old son Ned. Young Ned was born with a kidney problem which has led to several visits to the Royal Children’s Hospital and an appreciation of they work they do. “We decided we should do something for the Good Friday Appeal. On that Sunday we had all hair cuts with a trim and blow wave for a donation. We ended up raising $1,302 including the raffle.” * To donate to the Good Friday Appeal telephone 5275 1055 or see the website: www.goodfridayappeal. com.au

Ring road or public transport? Dear Editor Bellarine Ring Road or better public transport (Voice 24/3). What a choice, but with teenagers that like to be independent I’d have to vote for better public transport. Like Perth city, all major roads should have a light rail down the centre median strip. We could easily do this on the Bellarine Highway, with local bus services to connect to this.......but cost is always important.

So at least provide an hourly bus service for the Grove and other main towns on the Bellarine. It is well known that if public transport is not regular you will never get the patronage. I’d encourage Geelong public transport providers and the council to fund 12 months of increased bus services and let the public vote with their feet. Jen Hall Ocean Grove

day in the life - marie james (nee kean)

Still ‘Kean’ on the Grove MY family arrived in Ocean Grove in July 1959, so that probably means we can call ourselves locals by now! Prior to that we lived in Maryborough (central Victoria) and before that, Ouyen (in the Mallee), and until we came to the Grove, neither my sisters and brother, nor I had ever set eyes on the sea! I still vividly remember our amazement the first time we saw (and heard) the endless waves and felt the sand beneath our little bare feet. We took to the water like those proverbial ducks and spent most of our childhood and teenage years at the beach. Mum and Dad purchased a home which was then on the outskirts of town in Tuckfield Street – now it’s just about in the centre of town and our 90 year old mum still lives there. My sister Helen and brother Brendan (Jack) and their families live in the Grove and my sister Anne and her family live in the Otways, but return “home” regularly. None of us went too far afield for very long. Ocean Grove in the 60s and 70’s was a wonderful place in which to grow up. We attended the only school in town – the Ocean Grove Primary School (along with about 90 other kids) and I am sure we knew every family in the Grove. Having come from the very Anglo Saxon town of Maryborough, we were enthralled by the cultural diversity of Ocean Grove. Our playmates all had unusual names – many starting with “Van” and others we wouldn’t even try to pronounce. We were welcomed into a community of Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, German and Polish and other European post war immigrants. These hard working families built new homes and new lives and contributed immensely to the unique fabric of this town. I have so many happy

childhood memories of Ocean Grove. “Skinners Corner” owned and run by our unofficial Mayor Jack Skinner and his wife - Mrs Skinner (we never knew her first name!). This was the meeting place for the young people – a place to hang out when not at the beach. Skinners sold practically everything and if they didn’t stock it – they would order it in – our early version of “on line” shopping? Summers nights in the 60’s were amazing when dedicated members of the football club ran fundraising dances at the “Rec Hall”. The most popular Melbourne bands of the day played regularly at these well run dances for the local teens. In those days we had one local newspaper – the original Echo edited by Mrs Alex Townsend. Several more local papers emerged, but The Voice is so reminiscent of the original - a true local rag and I never miss reading it from cover to cover every fortnight. I have seen many changes, the most obvious of course being the expansion of the township which was, in our childhood, bounded by Field St North, Thacker, Madeley and Tuckfield streets and the beach (now known as “old Ocean Grove”). We had bushland all around us providing daylong adventures. No one ever seemed concerned about our safety as long as we were home for dinner (“tea” in those days). We now have two major shopping areas and a very impressive industrial estate, but The Terrace is still a great place to visit - excellent shops and commercial facilities, friendly service and a meeting place for young and old. I prefer to shop in the Grove and rarely need to go to Geelong (except to buy a car or a fridge!) Although our town has many excellent recreational and

sporting facilities, I think Ocean Grove now has the population to support a performing arts centre along the lines of COPACC (Colac). It would be great to have a purpose built venue for deb balls, wedding receptions, live theatre, school concerts etc. Maybe a movie theatre could be incorporated within the complex? My favourite local shop? I have many – I love Fiddley Bits (homewares & gifts), Kairos fashions, the shoe shop and a latté on weekends made by Brenna at Foam! If I could open a shop I guess it would have to a music shop. I run an entertainmentbooking agency, so I would probably combine this service with instruments sales, PA hire and a rehearsal/ recording studio for young musicians. Then again, maybe I could open a French Perfumery – (I’m sure my girl friends would prefer that). An Ikea store in the area would make my three daughters-in-law very happy too. However, I think I should just stick to what I know best and that’s operating my bandbooking agency, which I am fortunate enough to run from a home office. My husband, Allan and I were married at the old Star of the Sea Church in the Terrace in 1972 and when our third son was born, I started Haze Music. That was about 32 years ago and at the time, we had three little boys under four, so it was very convenient to work from home. In the early years of the business, I still had plenty of time for our young family, school committees and several local fundraising and support groups. The business has grown and evolved over the years and now keeps me occupied pretty well full time. There are definite advantages in working from home – no parking

problems for one - you can wear your comfy old trackies to work, put on a load of washing any time; lunch is only a fridge away and better still, now and then you can give yourself the afternoon off for a very long lunch with friends. In actual fact, I think you have to be more disciplined when running your own business, so I try to keep regular office hours (even if I do spend the first hour in my dressing gown!). Most of my enquiries come via email these days – usually a result of referrals from the main Geelong function venues as well as the many thriving wineries and golf clubs in the area. Haze Music web site generates most of the bookings for my bands, duos, DJs and classical ensembles. I supply music for all sorts of events - cabarets, balls, seminars and birthday parties. I specialise however, in providing music for wedding receptions and ceremonies. The choice of performers for a wedding is an important decision for the bridal couple as the music really sets the mood and creates the atmosphere for any celebration. I have to admit it’s a very pleasant job – helping couples choose the right music for their big day. Away from work, I enjoy cooking, reading, gardening and spending time with my family, especially our seven

grandchildren, who all live nearby. I have a special group of friends who have been together for thirty or so years and we meet regularly to have a laugh and talk and solve the problems of the world – but mainly laugh. What would I do if I were elected Mayor of Ocean Grove? For a start I wouldn’t apply for the job (far too much responsibility). However, I would love to see Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Drysdale etc. all become part of a new separate Bellarine Municipality with Councillor Jan Farrell as our Mayor! If I had to live anywhere but Ocean Grove, it would be somewhere on the Bellarine Peninsula – there are so many beautiful areas – the coastline, the bays, historic Queenscliff and the Barwon River where we often take our canoes for a leisurely paddle. I guess my favourite part of Ocean Grove has to be the huge private “parkland’ we are lucky enough to share with my mum who lives next door. Her home is on a large parcel of land and we removed the dividing fence years ago so the boys and their cousins and friends could enjoy the space – enough room to play cricket and footy and climb the big old cypress trees. Now THEIR children are doing the same thing and Great Granny welcomes the fun!

Ruby’s Mowing - Old, established local business catering for the mowing/gardening needs of Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. Free quotes on tree trimming and tree removal available. Call now to organize an appointment with Bill. Premier Lifts - Premier Lifts provides all types of lift maintenance, repair and installation services to residents and businesses in Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and Surf coast. We have been operating for nearly 2 years and due to a steady increase in customers have recently employed a 1st year apprentice. Our products are sourced from Australian manufacturers where possible and we outsource to local industries fabrication of any special requirements. We are seeing a growth in the number of home lift installations all around Australia and Geelong is no exception. With the average home size growing and suburban blocks decreasing in size the demand to go up rather than out is an affordable option. We also see older people wanting to stay in homes where they have lived but are now not coping with the stairs. Installing a lift provides access to the upper floors of homes without the need to relocate. Think of the saving on sales tax! And the money saved on removalists costs. Contact us on 1300 887172, phone Andrew on 0409564486 or email us at sales@premierlifts.com.au for a no obligation assessment of your requirements, whether for installation, repair or regular service.

Local Home Lift Maintenance and Repairs • Your lift, chair lift or dumbwaiter requires regular service just like your motor vehicle to keep your investment operating efficiently and more importantly, safely. After all, it is carrying precious items every time it is used – you and your family. • No matter what brand or type of lift you have we can complete all safety tests and give you a written report of the condition of your lift. This must be completed annually, as stated in Australian Standard AS1735, even on new lifts. • We do not charge travel time for Geelong, Bellarine or Surfcoast customers like some Melbourne or Interstate based companies

Call for a free assessment or to arrange your annual service on 1300 88 71 72 or call Andrew on 0409 564486. We also carry out repairs or modifications to most types of lifts. Call for a quote.

The Rustys are gearing up to head off to London where they will be competing in the Global Battle of the Bands on April 27. The three piece indie band are representing Australia in a worldwide competition aimed at giving unmanufactured bands their much strived-for break into the music industry. The contest is to be held at The Scala, a famous live music venue in Kings Cross in London that has seen the likes of Iggy Pop, Coldplay, Foo Fighters and Stereophonics grace the stage. Voice reporter Carly Helweg sat down with members Matt Blach and Lachie McKiernan to discuss the band, their music and the future of The Rustys. Ocean Grove Voice: How did you get The Rustys together? Matt Blach: It started off with me and Beau when we really young. Probably six, we both played drums and then both shifted off to guitar and we sort of started playing songs together. We bought out a CD and then we had Lachie over one day and he picked up the bass guitar and we started playing this new song and Lachie, it just came to him. We got all excited about Lachie and started making new songs, started recording again but then stopped cos Beau’s voice was breaking. OGV: One of the many dangers of being a teen band…. So who are the main songwriters? MB: Mainly Beau, but me and Lachie help sometimes and arrange it. OGV: What things are your songs about? What inspires your songwriting? MB: A few songs about times and going to the beach. Lachie McKeirnan: There should be more songs about the beach. MB: One of the songs we play in the competition is about robbing a bank which is just random. OGV: The two songs you are playing at the compeititon, “Don’t ask me” and “The Robbery”, are they your favourite songs to play? LM: Sort of favourites but they’re probably the most technical, best for competition. OGV: So you’re all being accompanied by your families to London? There won’t be any TV’s off the hotel balconies or late night

partying? LM: (Laughs) maybe… OGV: Have you checked out your international competition yet? LM: Yep a few bands, I’ve listened to the Kazakhstan band, they’re pretty good, they’re a bit different, and they sound alright. OGV: Did you notice there is a band with a similar name from China? MB: Yeh Rustic LM: We’re going to have to change our name! OGV: I know you have played some amazing gigs but what would be your best band moment? MB: Probably playing the national final in Sydney, it was a pretty sick thing to do. It was good to have lots of smoke and lights, it was a good atmosphere OGV: How many people were you playing in front of there? MB: About 600 LM: You reckon? I don’t reckon there was that many, maybe only 300 MB: Ah it was still big though OGV: Was that the biggest gig you have ever played? MB: Close to. LM: Probably the one we did the other day at Aireys Inlet. MB: Yeh Aireys was pretty cool. We played the Aireys Inlet open mike and we played before Colin Hay and his band, it was pretty sick. We sort of said hey beforehand and shook hands. OGV: What are some of your favourite bands to listen to? LM: I like listening to Rage Against the Machine, metal and stuff, just completely different to what I play.

MB: I’m probably a bit looser, The Black Keys and Led Zeppelin. Beau listens to Vampire Weekend and weirder music, he gets the most inspiration I guess as he listens to our type of music. OGV: Whose idea was it to enter the first final of the battle of the bands? MB: I think it was Beau’s idea. LM: I’d seen it on Channel V before being advertised and I think I’d mentioned it two years ago but then never did anything with it but then Beau saw it somewhere, maybe in a magazine and it said it was at Irish Murphy’s but it was like $100 to enter. MB: Yeh it was like $30 per band member, but we just did it and got through to the next round. OGV: Your parents must be extremely proud of your achievements? LM: I don’t think my parents ever really thought I would be in a band. I only ever played drums and was never really musical. My brother was in a few bands but none have been successful. OGV: What would winning this competition mean to you as a band? Where do you think you’ll be in five years? MB: We could buy some cool stuff (laughs). We’ll see what happens. We’ll make another CD, just keep playing and start doing pubs when we get a bit older. • The Rustys will be playing their farewell gig at The Ocean Grove Park on Saturday April 10th at 2pm before heading off to London the week after.

Described as sounding something like a Gram Parsons-fronted Bad Seeds - gospel tinged, blues driven and with a dash of gothic-Americana imagery - they are performing with Sarah Carroll and Den Hanrahan. Local and even American critics were unanimous in their praise of their debut album Ballad of a Young Married Man, each picking up on the strong narratives and understated

production of an album variously described as ‘alt-country’, ‘gothic country’, ‘country blues’ or even ‘rock n roll’. The Wildes’ slightly chaotic, ranchparty style live show garnered rave reviews as they launched the disc up and down the east coast, following their tour with a main-stage appearance on the final day of The Gympie Muster - quite an invitation for a band that had not even existed twelve months prior!

In August a music video appeared on YouTube and was quickly added to rotation on Foxtel’s Country Music Channel. Now The Wildes are back in the studio, beginning pre-production for their second disc and making selected appearances - including the Chicken Shop - around the country, playing alongside acts that vary from art-rock to almost-mainstream country.

Grey Butcherbirds perched on an Ocean Grove roof aerial.

Nature watch this week concerns ‘Grey Butcherbirds’photographed on my neighbour’s television aerial. Butcherbirds belong to the same family of birds as the Magpie and Currawong. The Grey Butcherbird has a black head and face with grey wings and white belly feathers. It also has a thin white ‘collar’ around the neck. It has a large grey and black bill with a hook at the tip which is used to ‘skewer’their prey

(gruesome). The Grey Butcherbird has dark brown eyes and grey feet. Females are slightly smaller than males, and the butcherbird grows to about 35 cms in length. They are found in most parts of Australia, except the desert regions of Northern Territory and Western Australia. They inhabit forest areas and have also adapted well to urban regions of Australia. Butcherbirds are aggressive predators. They eat small animals

such as other birds, lizards, insects, and also complement their diet with fruit and seeds. Butcherbirds get their name from their habit of hanging captured prey on a hook or in a tree fork, or crevice (double gruesome). This ‘larder’ is used to support the victim while it is being eaten, to store several victims or to attract mates! The Butcherbird builds a bowlshaped nest made of sticks and twigs, which is lined with grasses and other soft plant matter. The

nest is normally located within 10 metres of the ground. The eggs are incubated by the female and the young birds are fed by both parents. The young remain in the family group for about a year after hatching. The Butcherbird has the most beautiful melodious song, which makes you stop in your tracks! The sound is even better if there are several butcherbirds singing in unison, as has been the case around my house this summer. By Jennifer Carr

We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all

BARWON COAST

Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Ocean Grove Spit – Landscape Masterplan Over recent months we have been publicising the preparation of our draft Landscape Masterplan for the Ocean Grove Spit that includes the retention of the six week camping season on the riverside of the road and the demolition of the 5 amenity blocks replacing with 4 blocks more strategically located and built to minimise the consumption of materials, energy and water. The draft also proposed a new linkage from the existing Barwon Estuary walk in Ocean Grove thru to the Barwon Heads bridge – this being a project under the banner of the Barwon River Parklands. The Committee has reviewed the 23 submissions received (mainly from campers who would be impacted by the location of the trail). Consequently the Committee resolved to gain a fuller understanding of the impact of the proposed trail by commissioning additional work to undertake a detailed survey of the proposed trail location to enable the impact on existing campers to be further assessed. Hodgson St Car Park We have also been promoting by way of a draft masterplan an upgrade of the car park at the bottom of Hodgson St Ocean Grove. This location being a very popular access point to the ocean beach being adjacent to the beach area where dogs are permitted under effective control and where picnic tables are provided for great views of the coast. The pedestrian cycling trail from Collendina thru to Barwon Heads along the coast also adjoins the car park. Other than valuable input from local neighbours, no other submissions were received and the Committee has resolved to lodge the plans with the Department of Sustainability & Environment for Coastal Management Act consent, prior to construction. Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove Another major project for Barwon Coast has been working on is the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. The existing building is to be demolished and replaced with a new facility on a smaller footprint using environmentally sustainable products and reduced energy inputs. Best practice building design standards will be applied in regard to water and energy conservation. Rainwater will be collected and stored in a 100,000 litre underground tank and should provide for 70% of the annual water used for toilet flushing.

The building design aims to maximise the natural lighting of the internal areas whilst providing facilities in line with current numbers. The immediate area around the building will be lowered and the building moved inland by over 5 metres. Tenders for the project have now closed and are currently under review Natural Resource Protection Our pest plants program for 2010 has commenced with the project areas for the first six months being the removal of the Acacia Cyclops, a naturalising western Australian wattle, in the Barwon Heads Bluff region and the ongoing task of removing Polygala also known as Myrtle-leaf milkwort (Bellarine Pea), a native of South Africa, from the Ocean Grove Spit. To assist with our coastal reserves management works we have engaged a Green Jobs Corp project ‘team’ funded through the Caring for our Country - Indigenous Community Connections. In partnership with the Bellarine Catchment Network and the City of Greater Geelong this project will engage with indigenous youth working on a range of tasks over the next 6 months. Dogs on Beaches Please remember that until the end of April, dogs are required to be on a leash on most local beaches. Dogs are however permitted under effective control east of 13W Hodgson St Ocean Grove towards Collendina. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. If your dog does not respond to your voice then it is not under effective control “Scoop the Poop” is a must to ensure that your dogs waste does not compromise our coastal environment. Use the free bags that we provide at many beach access points and help keep our beaches clean. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

Clean up Australia (and Ocean Grove) CONGRATULATIONS on clean up Australia Day. Our Lady Star of the Sea has cleaned up around Bellarine Aquatics Centre and also around the front of the school. We have successfully picked up 15 bags of rubbish. We (even) found a trolley from Safeway. Please do not take trolleys, they are not to take. We ask you not to litter. If you see someone litter, go up to them and say ‘do not’. Littering is wrong We have picked up 63 per cent more this year than last year. Storm warnings

Students at Ocean Grove Primary are spreading the word about stormwater drains.

STUDENTS from Ocean Grove Primary School have been busy in the streets of Ocean Grove, leaving important messages for the community to read. Grade 5 children, assisted by staff and parents, worked in small groups stencilling messages on top of 25 stormwater drains near their school. The messages ‘Drains to Barwon Estuary’ and ‘This drain is just for rain’ and pictures of wetland wildlife help highlight community connections to the Barwon Estuary and Lake Connewarre, an internationally important Ramsar wetland. This wetland system has a diverse range of vegetation, including seagrass and mangroves that provide nursery habitat for young fish and many other marine creatures. Reduced

nutrients, sediments and litter entering the wetlands will help keep these ecosystems healthy. In March this year Bellarine Catchment Network facilitated stormwater awareness and drain stencilling activities with students in each of 3 locations on the Bellarine Peninsula. Stormwater drains to Swan Bay, Lake Connewarre/Barwon Estuary and Port Phillip Bay were targeted by Queenscliff PS, Ocean Grove PS and Portarlington PS. These activities will assist in protecting Bellarine Ramsar wetlands through integrated coastal community engagement. The activities are funded through the Australian Government’s ‘Caring for our Country’ Program.

Sun shines on college cross county CHRISTIAN College Geelong held its annual House Cross Country at the end of March. All students from Years 4 to 9 from both the Bellarine and Highton campuses took part. Years 4 to 6 ran a 2km course and the Year 7 to 9’s competed over a 3km course. The event was held on a beautiful sunny day at the Drysdale Recreation Reserve. Whilst the courses this year were varied from 2009, it did not stop our age group winner, David McPhee, from comfortably winning his event in a very fast time. David McPhee.

Beautiful business Psychologist Jeff Wilkinson HAYLEY Richards has opened a new beauty business at Ocean Wave Hair and Beauty. Hayley is offering treatments such as waxing, manicures, pedicures, eyelash and eyebrow tinting and make up from the Madeley Street salon. “I have done a lot of research in setting up my business so the products I am using in my salon are of the highest quality, but have still been able to keep my prices at a low,” said Hayley who has been in the beauty industry for seven years. “I was working in a Day Spa in Ocean Grove for four years, and that has inspired me to go out on my own and pursue my dream, of owning my own business. “For the last year I have been managing an Estee Lauder counter in the Northern Territory, which included me doing a lot of make up and bridal parties, which I have a great passion for. But it was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to come back to Ocean Grove and start up my own

salon,” she said. “Eventually I would like to expand and be able to offer more treatments, but for the time being I will focus on giving the best treatment I can to my clients and giving them the one on one treatment that they deserve. “I am already sponsoring the Ocean Grove football/netball club because I really believe in supporting the community that you live and work in plus my partner and I also enjoy going to watch the local games on a Saturday. “In my spare time I enjoy walking my little dog down the beach. “I have seen many beaches around Australia and I can honestly say Ocean Grove is one of the most beautiful. I also love all the little cafes in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads where I often meet friends for coffee or a quiet drink on the weekend.” Hayley’s hours are very flexible, so if there is a time that suits you that is out of business hours don’t hesitate to give her a call and she will try her best to accommodate you.

you are happy, and I could think of no better place than Ocean Grove. Selling real estate on your doorstep, allows me to share my love of the area, and also offer guidance, suggestions, and recommendations to new settlers. “It is with great pleasure to know that I have been responsible for professionally finding ‘the great Australian dream’. “I have always appreciated local business, and know that being known to most of them, they have always proved to go beyond the call of duty at any time to help and provide assistance. “Pricing has always been fair minded, and quality of the highest standard. I have been able to pass on recommendations to new settlers into town, and hopefully assisted the growth of local business. “I was once a sponsor of the Grubbers Football Club, and hope that when I become a financial success, I can once again be a sponsor, as well as a follower. “My passion is the community, supporting most events. I am a member of the Queenscliff Lions Club, the Ocean Grove/Barwon Heads Probus Club and the Ocean Grove Bowling Club. “At this stage I feel that I have made one small step with the hope of taking a giant leap to success offering my Linda Mathews. experience, knowledge, and attitude to achieve great results.”

LINDA Mathews Boutique Real Estate opened on February 20 as a Real Estate Agency. “Having commenced real estate in 2000 as a property manager for McKewan Real Estate, I realised my need to move on to residential properties.” said Linda. “A position with the professionals became available, and I commenced work with The Professionals in 2001. In 2003 I was approached to open Wallington Real Estate with the Developer of Kingston Estate. Completing the necessary Certificate IV in six months to give me a Full Real Estate Licence business commenced, and with new and creative marketing Wallington Real Estate has expanded from Land Sales to residential sales. “In 2007 I promoted the many benefits to major home builders, and subsequently we have watched Kingston Estate grow rapidly, releasing at least 50 blocks per year. This increases the population of Ocean Grove, and provides growth to the community. I have lived in Ocean Grove for 15 years. Prior to that my family enjoyed 10 years as holidaymakers at the Riverview Caravan Park.” Linda worked in a Law Firm for 25 years, and became a Legal Executive specialising in property Law. She believes her knowledge of subdivisions has helped in promoting Kingston Land “The most perfect place is where

Tyres triumph over Primary in Surfside clash on the rinks The Oceanyour Grove Improving Remedial qualityMassage of life Centre would like to welcome Nikki Hamilton to the team

SURFSIDE Tyres has lifted the coveted Ocean Grove Voice Trophy after winning this year’s Community Bowls Challenge at Club Grove. It was down to the wire on the last night as two sides started on five - Surfside Primary and Ocean Grove Badminton and Surfside Tyres and Beaton Bros were tied on six. But as the school and the tyre boys squared off under the setting sun, the primary was unable to erase their opponents marks, the latter keeping a sure grip on the night. The event was sponsored by last year’s winners, All Makes Automotive,

BAREFOOT BOWLER: Jason Popelier of the WHK team was probably the smartest contender taking part in this year’s community bowls at Club Grove. As usual the popular event attracted more entries than could take part. Business, friends, schools and all walks take part in the friendly event

A new coastal incentive program known as CoastalTender has been funded by the Australian Government to implement long term protection and enhancement of the coastline within the Corangamite region. This new funding will support land managers in the management and conservation of native vegetation and habitat on properties (>1ha) along the Corangamite coastline, including revegetation with indigenous species. The project will cover the entire coastline for the Corangamite region, as well as areas surrounding the Port Phillip Bay and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar sites which fall within the Corangamite region. The current budget for the first round of CoastalTender is approximately $500,000. It is open to private land owners, local government shire councils and foreshore committees of management to undertake works on land that they directly manage. Land managers who formally express interest in the scheme will receive an obligation-free site assessment, and a draft management plan. The plan will contain a vegetation assessment and provide advice on management options. Following this, the land manager will be invited to submit a tender nominating the bid price they are seeking in order to undertake the management actions as outlined in the management plan. Tenders will then enter a competitive tender evaluation process. Once successful tenders have been determined, a five year agreement based on the agreed actions included in the bid will be signed. Land managers can also opt to include long-term protection commitments in their agreement, which will improve their competitiveness. Under these agreements, the land manager will receive financial incentive payments. Only actions that are over and above those required by current responsibilities under existing arrangements and legislation will be eligible for support. For further information, and to register an Expression of Interest, please telephone Polly Matthews on 0417 511 999 (Monday to Wednesday) or visit the website at www.ccma.vic.gov.au – be quick because oversubscription in the scheme may result in later registrations missing out.

Players remember Luke SURFSIDE Waves Soccer Club recently hosted a team from Bendigo for a practice game in memory of former player Luke Hercus. Sadly Luke was just 27 when he died suddenly while out walking with his family along the Barwon River in November last year. He had lived in Ocean Grove for four years

and was engaged to be married to Lisa Tout when the tragedy happened. At the end of March two games were played between Luke’s two former soccer clubs, Surfside Waves and Epson Soccer Club. Another fixture was also organised for the visiting women’s side to play Barwon Heads. A good crowd travelled for the game. One of Luke’s brothers Jimmy who lives in Ocean

Grove was at the match and a sausage sizzle helped raise money for PAN, an organisation that provides animal therapy for kids at risk. Luke had been involved in setting up PAN. It is hoped the match will become an annual fixture for the clubs. Surfside Waves juniors begin their new season on April 24 while the seniors kick off on May 2.

So close to an upset THE Grubbers launched a spirited showing in their Round 1 BFL clash against reigning premiers Drysdale, despite falling short in a nail-biter at Ocean Grove on Saturday. Drysdale 12.18.90 won by eight points and finished the stronger late in the final term to defeat Ocean Grove 12.10.82. Ocean Grove, who trailed Drysdale by 18 points at three-quarter time, bravely fought their way back midway through the final term and when livewire forward Travis Gavin goaled to level the scores, the game reached a thrilling climax. Gavin and inspirational Grubbers’ captain James Dalton both played excellent final quarters. The silky skilled Hawks outfit responded with some vital centre clearances in the final moments, resulting in two goals to help visitors seal the game.

Post-match the feelings were mixed for Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor, told the Voice minutes after the match. “We had our opportunities to probably win the game, that is the disappointing thing,” McGregor said. “To push the top side so competitively is a great effort, but getting four points would have been a much more deserved result really.” While McGregor acknowledged the Hawks experience in the latter stages helped secured the win, he was equally impressed with his side’s match fitness to compete with the BFL’s best. “We have worked really hard on our fitness, we were pretty confident we rotated a lot throughout the game – so we had the

fitness to run the game out,” he said. “Our fitness proved evident, but it was their (Drysdale’s) experience late in the game which won them the game.” For the home side Tom McManus kicked two goals while youngster Patrick West impressed on debut booting three majors. McGregor praised new recruit Greg Costello for nullifying the influence of leading Drysdale forward Luke Maher. “Luke Maher has averaged six goals against us (Ocean Grove) in the last five hit outs and he has kicked one (goal) today,” he said. “Costello, who is new to the club, not only beat him (Maher) in the air fairly regularly, he run off him and he was handy for us and he was in our best three or four players.” The Grubbers will now travel to Modewarre this
