And it hits Davy Jones’ Locker in two minutes
THE long envisaged performance space proposed for the Ocean Grove Park, at the corner of Presidents Avenue and The Avenue, has reached the detailed concept design stage in sufficient detail to be released for public consultation and potential user assessment, say its organisers. The proposal incorporates a roofed, open, main stage, with an adjoining “Green Room”, ancillary storage, a basic kitchen and ablution facilities for users of the performance space. The chairman of the Ocean Grove Park Association, Colin Atkins, said: “The vision for the proposed performance space has long been to provide for the presentation of performing arts to the Ocean Grove community and to also provide opportunities to nurture local and emerging performing artists from all spheres.” Continued page 11

Lakes talk
Another new car wash
LOCALS can take the chance to learn more about Lake Connewarre Wetlands at a talk in Geelong next week. The talk is being organised next Tuesday (October 13) by Geelong Field Naturalists Club Plant Study Group and the Geelong Botanic Gardens. The meeting at Geelong Botanic Gardens Meeting Room will offer a chance to meet and mingle at 7pm and will start properly at 7.30pm. For more information telephone 5227 0379 or email botanic@geelongcity.vic. gov.au
A new car wash has sprung out of the vacant ground next to Lofty’s old garage on the Wallington Road. The new car wash is on the former site of Ocean Grove Garden Supplies and is between the Groove and the Shell garage. The other car wash, Splish, Splash, off Grubb Road has recently been extended to include new features.
$2 million upgrade A NEW sewerage pump station is being constructed in Ocean Grove to meet growth on the Bellarine Peninsula. Barwon Water General Manager Capital Projects and Greenhouse Paul Northey said the $2 million project involved replacing the existing Tuckfield Street pump station with a larger capacity facility. “This key piece of infrastructure has served the peninsula well, but is nearing capacity and requires an upgrade to meet future development,” Mr Northey said. He said Barwon Water had prepared a Bellarine Peninsula Sewerage Management Strategy to address the needs of communities across the coastal region over the next 50 years. “This planning is crucial, particularly with local government forecasting a doubling of the population by 2050.” Mr Northey said as a result of consultation with community group Friends of the Begola Wetlands, nearby residents and
the City of Greater Geelong, the replacement pump station would be constructed further south of the wetlands to allow future pedestrian access to this important area. “As well as this, the majority of the new infrastructure will be underground and the new building will be rendered and screened by plants to minimise visual impact. “Odour control facilities will meet best practice environmental standards and the existing building, vent stack and other visible infrastructure will be removed once the new station is operational.” Despite its larger capacity, the footprint of the new station has been minimised and will be only around 2 per cent larger than the existing station. Construction is expected to begin in mid October. A walking track around the site will remain, although pedestrians will be diverted during the replacement program. The project is being delivered by the Barwon Water Alliance.
quick news Man glassed An off-duty police officer was having a knock-off drink when he witnessed an assault at an Ocean Grove bar on Saturday night. Around midnight it is believed two local men had an altercation on the dance floor of the Zebra Crossing before one was slashed across the head with a broken beer glass. The 34-year-old sustained a deep cut from his temple to the back of his ear and was taken to Geelong Hospital with serious injuries. An off-duty member who observed the glassing and followed the alleged assailant from the venue onto the street. He was joined by police from the Bellarine van and after a short foot chase they arrested a 24-year-old man. The 24-year-old has been interviewed for assault and released pending further investigations.

GEELONG Council has served notice that is considering a levy on about 60 Collendina households to pay towards the cost of footpath construction. Details and objections, contact the City of Greater Geelong.
Bert’s biography launch ONE of Ocean Grove’s best loved and most interesting characters is being honoured with a biography. Bert Fenton OAM would have been a Lion for 50 years this month but sadly he passed away in July. Later this month a book about Bert by Ian Whitelock will be lauched in Queenscliff. Bert was an active member in the community of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and up until four years ago he still flew his plane out of Barwon Heads. Bert was also a member of the Bellarine Peninsula Church of Christ, the RSL and Probus - to name a few. The book “High Flyer” will be launched on October 20 at the Royal Hotel in Queenscliff where it will be sold autographed on the night at a small cost. The book will be available for sale after at selected stores. The Author Ian Whitelock is a retired Minister and is currently a member of

Volunteers gutted by store break in
VOLUNTEERS feel like they’ve been kicked in the guts by the actions of heartless vandals who broke into the Vic Disabled Surfers Association store and ran amuck with its all-terrain wheel chairs. Last week the association’s president arrived for an early surf and discovered two of their four $4,000 chairs scattered around the beach. Another was missing. “One of the chairs was down on the beach in front of Mick’s Steps,” said vice president Paul Van Someren. “One was on the boardwalk and the other one was missing until this morning when someone notified the police that it was in Osborne Street.” The association, which stores its gear in a council lock up on Ocean Grove main beach, is run by volunteers and funded by donations. Only set up in Victoria last year it gives local and visiting disabled people the chance to surf or learn to surf as well as basic water access. “Luckily they didn’t really vandalise them,” said Paul who explained

quick news Toilet agenda LOCAL councilor Jan Farrell says there is funding for improving Ocean Grove’s Parade car park toilet block. However she said moving the block to a more accessible location has so far proven difficult, and costly in terms of parking spaces. Cllr Farrell who has lobbied to get improvements for the amenities responded to the issues following comments from visitor Pauline Coales in the last Voice. She said she would continue to take the matter up with the council. Pauline from Grovedale said she loved visiting the town but added that the toilets were a ‘disgrace’ and needed ‘blowing up’. OCEAN Grove has a new out of town holiday park with BIG4 opening up at Marcus Hill. The purpose-built BIG4 Bellarine Holiday Park opened on October 1 and is aiming to become both a destination in its own right and the gateway to the peninsula’s attractions. Sophie Bone who will run the park with husband Tim, said the choice of
location – both at the centre of the Bellarine and just 5km from Ocean Grove – were critical. The site, which has cabins, caravan and camping space, also features an indoor heated pool complex, water playground and water slide, a 1.2km walking track, an adventure playground, a cinema room, go karts (unpowered) and a range of sports facilities.

A FIRST men’s shed meeting is being held at Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesday next week (October 13). The meeting follows a wave of interest in the idea of setting up a men’s shed in Ocean Grove and the organisers hope that it will get the ball rolling on pulling together ideas. The meeting will start at 1pm at the centre in the Parade. All welcome.

Making a spectacle for a good cause LOCAL optometrist Ocean Eyes will be helping transform the lives of those without access to basic eye care services by taking part in World Sight Day tomorrow (Thursday October 8). On that day the business, run by optometrist Majella O’Connor, will donate all eye examination fees to help do her part in assisting some of the 670 million people who are estimated to have no access to eye exams or glasses. In many developing countries there are not enough trained eye care personnel and/or local infrastructure to support basic eye care services. “The patients I see every day have a number of sophisticated vision care services and vision

TAKING the dog for walk can be good for humans as well as dogs. Bellarine Community Health its organising a community dog walk as part of a Beyond Blue Anxiety & Depression Awareness Month. We know that physical exercise is beneficial in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety…and there is also evidence that companion animals, such as dogs, can also help people to cope with these conditions. Research indicates that companion animals reduce stress chemicals, improve mood, and provide social and recreational opportunities. So come on a group dog walk, to raise awareness of mental health issues, and have some fun! The walk on Thursday October 15 from 3.30pm, lasts about an hour and starts at the Bellarine Community Health Centre, on the corner of Presidents Avenue and The Avenue, and continues to Ocean Grove main beach and back. Residents pan public toilets Letters following visitor Pauline Coales’ comments in the September 23 edition of the Voice. Dear Editor Instead of wasting rate payers money by “replacing” the toilet block, why don’t council just pay willing workers to clean them up.... I commute regularly for work to Werribee, Melton, Hoppers Crossing and Sunshine, and after a long trip, I am sometimes forced to resort to using the train station loos where the conditions there are appalling. I can honestly say our toilets in OG are worse than any I’ve encountered at work, and sometimes I don’t spend my money in the local OG shops, purely because of the toilet block. In saying that, the toilets in the above mentioned western suburbs, easily supercede ours here in the Grove in their clean, modern and busy shopping centres. I have recently learned about an organisation called “Giving it a Go” who find jobs to do for local willing people like spray painting street numbers on the side walks etc. Perhaps they have cleaners available...Their contact number is 0439 844 293. Concreting the brick work and planting some flowers would easily enhance the aesthetics of the block, and that would also generate some work for locals via the newspaper. Aren’t soap dispensers, toilet paper & hot water mandatory from a health and safety perspective.....I would definitely spend more of my time & money in O.G if these issues were
addressed. Janette Mathieson Ocean Grove Dear Editor I totally agree with the sentiment expressed in the recent edition of the Voice regarding the toilet block near the main shopping centre. As a local, I am very embarrassed that visitors to Ocean Grove are met with such substandard facilities. I refuse to use them. This toilet block needs to be totally renovated to such that reflects the pride we have in Ocean Grove while addressing the water issues we face. eg eco friendly facilities. The toilets in the Safeway complex also have issues. While they are always well maintained, the management ( Melbourne based) refuses to alter the time the water flows from the automatic taps.I have contacted Barwon Water, and C.O.G.G former councillor Tom O’Connor after calling the management twice, asking if they could arrange a small adjustment that would save thousands of litres of warm water. They are not interested in the slightest! The automatic taps run for at least 16 seconds every time anyone initiates water flow. This provides three times more water than anyone needs to rinse their hands...our clean drinking water down the drain! I was advised by anyone I
contacted that there was nothing that could be done except shame them via the newspaper. Perhaps you could help? Take a jug and measure how much warm water is released each time, and do a rough calculation as to how much water is potentially being lost... especially during the tourist season. Most Australians are very water conscious and would like to be able to limit their water usage ...walking away from the tap that is still running does not sit well with anyone. Good luck. Anne Mclaughlin Ocean Grove
Dear Editor I totally agree with Paulines’ comments on the toilet block near Coles, Ocean Grove. I used to travel from Barwon Heads to do my shopping at Safeway, Ocean Grove. Even though Coles is a bit closer, I am a Mum with two children (2.5 yrs and 4 mths) and clean toilets and changing facilities are an absolute must for me. We moved to Ocean Grove in June and I still do all my shopping at Safeway for this reason. The toilets are easily accesable, and I’ve always found them to be very clean. Something you’re very thankful for,
especially when you’re heavily pregnant! I would love to be able to do a full shop at Coles if I felt like it as it is central to the banks and other things, but the state of those toilets is enough to turn me away. Sure, I pop in to get a few things, but it’s usually a grab-anddash. I really hope something will come of raising this issue! Candice Ryan Ocean Grove Dear Editor I agree with Pauline Coales, our car park toilets in Ocean Grove are a disgrace and it should be a top priority to build new toilets. How can we expect to encourage visitors to our lovely coastal area and not provide decent clean toilets, not only for visitors but residents as well. B Pitcher Ocean Grove Dear Editor I totally support the views of Pauline Coats of Grovedale regarding the Ocean Grove Car Park toilet block. In my opinion they should be bulldozed. I am ashamed to direct customers to the only Public amenities in the Ocean Grove Commercial Centre and have receivd many
complaints about the condition of them over the years. I know there has been many requests to the City of Greater Geelong to upgrade these amenities - nothing has been done. If we want to encourage visitors to our town we must have action immediately. Sandi Ward, Sandi’s Spot Ocean Grove Dear Editor Pauline Coales comments regarding the Ocean Grove toilets I feel were a little harsh. From an enginering point of view (Judging from the mens only) the structure looks fine, roof in good condition and mechanical services all appear to work as designed, if to say these facilities should be (in her words) “Blown Up” because of cleaniness is a little extreme in my opinion. If the issue is such a concern to Pauline who injects so much in to our local economy by doing (as she puts it) “her banking” maybe she could find the time to petition the council to reintroduce a more regular routine maintenance schedule. I’m not disagreeing with the fact the toilets are a bit gross to use (as are all I’ve been to) but I would not like to see community money being wasted on rebuilding a perfectly functioning (but smelly) toilet into one that’s just a little more asthetically pleasing (but smelly) toilet block. Passion for the ‘people business’ I WAS born in Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula, living in nearby Rosebud until moving to Flemington at the age of 9. We moved to Sydney and then back to East Preston before joining the Navy at the completion of year 10 (Intermediate Certificate) at the age of 15. So when it comes to growing up I believe the 7 years I spent in the Navy certainly forms part of that! There is nothing like experiencing Asia as a 17 year old! As a result of moving around I attended a few schools, namely Rosebud Primary School, Flemington Primary and Secondary, Macquarie Boys School Parramatta and East Preston High. I am a life long learner so my qualifications include Master of Business Administration (MBA), Graduate Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism, Advanced Diploma and Diploma in Management, Diploma of Catering, Certificate 4 in Workplace Training and Assessment and I am a qualified Chef. There are many others but I do not want to bore you. I am also a Fellow of the Australian Human Resource Institute and have numerous awards including Tourism Training Australia – National Training Legend. Ocean Grove has been my home for the past 17 years and I feel that it is a great place to raise the kids with a country town image and a wide range of fishing opportunities. The amazing thing about Ocean Grove is that it has not lost its community spirit. However, the town clearly lacks some pretty critical infrastructure e.g. appropriate taxi and bus services and youth support. The population growth projections must be well managed and cannot be at the expense of our unique culture and environment. I work at Club Grove,

where I am the General Manager. I have held numerous senior management positions in Hospitality, Health Care and Education. I have also consulted to the Hospitality Industry throughout my career whilst holding these positions. I love hospitality “the people business”. Club Grove is very much involved with the community, directly with the Ocean Grove traders, the RSL and the Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, as well as indirectly with many other clubs and local people. My day to day routine is driven by the needs of the Club – I am hands on and like to spend time with our customers. However, the demands of the role ensure I spend time in the office and at both internal and external meetings. I love to travel to expand my knowledge and to pinch ideas - remembering that less than one quarter of a percent are new ideas? In my opinion, I do think Ocean Grove’s Terrace shopping centre will be much different in ten years, because what is there is not sustainable, tired and lacks the culture you would expect e.g. more diverse and localised
eating opportunities. Bring on Lygon Street, I say. Country Target will challenge the relevant local traders but is good for the town as I am a strong believer competition is healthy and survival of the fittest will naturally occur. My view, when times are tough the cream comes to the top. Don’t forget it was not that long ago the sky was going to fall as a result on the Shell Road Supermarket being established. Clearly infrastructure to meet increasing demand, retaining our sense of community and social issues such as crime, drugs and unemployment are issues the town will be facing in the future. Away from work, family and fishing are my passions, although my job, in particular how Club Grove can take responsibility for enhancing/developing community is also a passion. I don’t have a favourite part of Ocean Grove, as I just like experiencing all of what the town has to offer. If I had to live anywhere else, Sydney would be it as it is my second most favourite place in the World.

canberra sinking
Thousands turn out for Grove’s historic sinking
The Last 48 hours
Towed from Geelong via Portsea direction.
A DULL thud replaced an explosion, a grey smoke confirming it was on. But watchers – some of whom had been rocking around in boats for up to six hours - barely got time to take it in before it was all over. In less than two minutes the decommissioned Australian naval warship HMAS Canberra quietly sank beneath the waters 3km off Ocean Grove. The Victorian Artificial Reef Society lobbied for three years to get the navy frigate sunk in Victorian waters and
Ocean Grove was chosen for its ideal marine geography. The 138 metre guided-missile frigate acquired by Victoria in 2006 will now become a much soughtafter dive site 30 metres below the surface. On the day of the sinking cliff tops, beaches and the bluff were packed full of eager spectators, many of whom had travelled hours to get there. Car parks were overflowing and the Ocean Grove boat ramp car park has never seen so many trailers.
Out in the water an estimated 150 craft from rubber duckies and tinnies to luxury cruisers generally jostled patiently for a clear glimpse of the event. Ultimately the ship took two minutes to hit Davy Jones’ locker. But the quick finish disguised several weeks of uncertainty culminating in delays getting through the heads and a five hour wait on the day. Sixteen charges in the ship’s hull were detonated at about 2pm on Sunday, a muffled bang sending water
equally through the hull, ensuring both the stern and bow disappeared together. Commercial clearance divers were expected to survey the wreck once it had settled later on Sunday to ensure all the charges had detonated. Moorings will then be installed by Parks Victoria before the government opens the site for divers, in about a month’s time. Ed’s note: Grateful thanks to Barry Joyce for helping the Voice get a great vantage point on the water.

SIXTY ARTISTS LINED UP FOR SHOW THE organisers of the first Melbourne Cup pARTy weekend art show are already predicting a huge success with 60 entries so far submitted. Thanks to OGAN – Ocean Grove Arts Network – and those who have entered, the shopping centre will be a huge draw over the weekend with works of art in most shop windows. Among the art on show will be the work of Patsy Bush, left, now from Barwon Heads but well known on this side of the bridge, and that of Adam Shelley (pictured right) and one of his series on Queenscliff Pier. These flexible design elements would allow for both audiences and performers of smaller presentations to be contained within the body of the facility. The design includes solar panels and an underground tank to collect and reuse roof run-off. The estimated cost of some $560,000 allows for a landscaped setting, including some paving, and loading facilities. Colin Atkins said, “the Association is most appreciative of the City of Greater Geelong for its allocation of $40,000 in this year’s budget, to enable the detailed design development and documentation to proceed, and also for access to Cr, Farrell and relevant staff for consultations as the concept was developed.” A consultant team will soon be appointed to undertake the performance space documentation, including the design of suitable acoustic facilities and sound containment. “It is therefore important”, Colin Atkins said, “To now receive input from the community,
and for potential users to come forward and tell us of their assessment of the proposal and their likely usage. The concept drawings will be on display at the COGG Ocean Grove Customer Service Centre (The Grove Centre) for one month from 12 October. Interested persons are encouraged to attend a presentation/ workshop at 7.30 pm, on 28 October, in the meeting room at the centre. Further presentations will be programmed if there is the demand or community groups seek presentations. These may be arranged by emailing president@oceangrovepark. org.au. or by telephoning 5255 2505. Submissions would also be welcomed and should be addressed to Ocean Grove Park Inc. PO Box 655, Ocean Grove The Park Association was formed in 1996 to save Ocean Grove Park from residential development. It led the community in the raising of $100,000, which, together with $300,000 from the State Government, enabled the park to be purchased. However, the Association had to accept full responsibility for the park’s management, maintenance and development. A responsibility its volunteer members have undertaken with considerable energy and enthusiasm. As with the saving of the park, making the performance space a reality for the community will require the Association to seek significant financial support.

Friends just clicked Grove’s ...and 25 years on Are You FROM humble beginnings as a playgroup, a collection of women from Ocean Grove are now celebrating 25 years of friendship. Therapy, as they now call it, has grown from six women supporting each other through motherhood to nine women supporting each other through life … with the odd glass of champagne along the way. As the unofficial spokeswoman for the group, Jan Lesser tells their story, obviously proud of achieving 25 years, an anniversary even some marriages struggle to reach. Originally contacted by the local welfare centre, six women were asked to come in once a week to support each other as first time mothers. From the first week they all clicked. “We just knew that we liked each other,” said Jan. After eight weeks of meeting at the health centre, the group decided to continue their Friday sessions at each other’s homes. This continued until second children started to arrive and the group grew. “It was obvious the homes just weren’t going to cater for us, it was just too difficult,” said Jan. So the women packed up the toys and sandwiches and moved to the hall at the Collendina Cricket Club for their weekly sessions. With 25 children between the nine women and with many of them not having their own mothers or family nearby to help out, playgroup became the next best thing. “It was a wonderful way to make motherhood fun,” Jan said. “A lot of us didn’t have the support of mothers in the town so friends then bridged the gap.” As children went to school and there were only the

Class cooked up a treat - and right service is important too - Paige Macdonald, Kendra Hyland, Kirby Macdonald and Jordan Machnyk.
Cooking up a recipe for fun FIFTEEN children spent the start of their school holidays cooking up a storm in the kitchen at Groove Milkbar, writes Carly Helweg. The café ran two days of cooking classes to encourage children to get involved in cooking at home using fresh ingredients and possibly helping out mum or dad in the process. They learnt about all aspects of using a commercial kitchen before baking chocolate truffle balls, jelly, muffins and Groove’s famous sausage rolls. Groove owner Annette Macdonald and chef Melissa began the day with a safety and hygiene briefing, critical when working in the kitchen. Melissa emphasized the safety lecture by
showing the children the burns she has accumulated over her years in the kitchen. “They learnt that the kitchen is not a playground,” Melissa said. The day wasn’t only about cooking but education too. Annette and Melissa taught the group about ingredients Groove uses in their home cooked meals, the different herbs in the garden out the front of the shop and different allergies people can have to food. Annette’s philosophy is simple; Groove is all about having a bit of fun. “I want cooking to be fun… we have fun here,” she said. “We wanted to cover all the basics of cooking and hygiene in the kitchen. The kids have to clean as they go, they learn the
whole process.” Passionate about providing fresh meals made from scratch, Annette wanted to inspire the children to have a similar love for food. “So many kids also don’t realise what goes into fresh food, a lot think that it just comes from the supermarket… so many kids don’t even know how to make jelly,” she said. The cooking group was very enthusiastic from the moment they arrived in their brightly coloured aprons. Molly, nine is an old hand in the kitchen. “When I go to Granny’s I make rum balls and jelly,” she said. “I like cooking rum balls because we got to feel the mixture and make them into any
shape we wanted.” Sean, 11 also thought the chocolate truffles were a winner. “My favourite thing I made were the truffles because there was lots of coconut to play with,” he said. Spread just by word of mouth, the two days of classes were full after just one week. Demand was so high that Annette even stopped keeping a list of backups in case someone dropped out as it became too long. With the popularity of the first program Annette is planning to run other classes over the summer holidays to allow others the chance to get their hands dirty in the kitchen.
Milking and cheesemaking - all at the Neighbourhood Centre

THIS small bird was perched on the fence around Begola Wetlands. I sent the photo (via my dad who is a volunteer) to the Museum of Victoria to help me identify it, and the bird is a female Flame Robin. Thanks Harry for your help! Male Flame Robins have a bright orange breast and throat with white plumage around the tail. The top of the head and back
are dark grey. The bill is black and the legs are brown (very multi colored)! The female (as pictured above) is grey brown with a pale white wing stripe, and a mostly white outer tail feather. As with most birds the male is much prettier and more colourful than the female! The Flame Robin grows up to 14cms in length.
Flame Robins are found in coastal regions from Southern Queensland to the South Australian border. They are also found in Tasmania. They are mainly found in forests and woodlands but in winter they can be seen in more open areas, including gardens. Flame Robins are the only breed of Robin to form flocks in the winter. They feed on insects and spiders.
The breeding season is August to January. The female Flame Robin builds a nest made of grass, bark, which is held together with spider web and decorated with lichen (sounds very posh). Three or four eggs are hatched at a time. I have been looking but so far haven’t spotted a male Flame Robin at Begola. By Jenny Carr

BARWON COAST Barwon Coast, your local coastal foreshore managers, has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate the Barwon Heads Caravan Park & the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove. Our Committee members are all local residents from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and are appointed by the State Government following the public advertising for expressions of interest. BEACH ACCESS PATHWAYS All of our beach access pathways are numbered with a yellow pyramid sign and there is also a aquatic safety sign. Many of us use the beach access pathways repeatedly, but how many of us take note of these signs. Taking note of the number; for example 8W, is not only a good way to tell people where to meet you, but also one day could save your life. If you know which access pathway you entered the beach or are near, advising this allows emergency services to render assistance more efficiently. With warmer weather and summer school holidays soon upon us, it is equally important that children and visitors are made aware of the water safety signs and beach access numbers. COASTAL ENVIRONMENT VOLUNTEER ORGANISATIONS WORKSHOP Our local groups are invited to a second workshop on Thursday 15th October 6:15pm to 9:30pm at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, deferred from September, the RSVP is sought by 5th October. This workshop is the follow up on our initial meet and greet workshop held during November 2008. The main topic on the Agenda will be the reporting back on our Coastal Management Zones with details of vegetation types including weeds throughout those zones and details of our previous studies and management regime. We will be looking for feedback from the groups including areas they see as a priority. A SENSE OF PLACE We all come to the beach for different reasons and values. It is important when using our beaches that we respect other beach users. If you have a dog on the beach please ensure it is under your direct control preferably on a leash, and don’t forget to ‘scoop the poop’. The Hooded Plover is a small shorebird that requires our intertidal zones for nesting, foraging and rearing chicks. The Hooded Plover takes up a very small section of coastline over a small
period of time for nesting in the spring and summer. If you are walking toward Point Lonsdale be alert for these important shore birds. Our coastline is public open space for all users, by respecting each other and the values and opportunities our coastal environment provides will minimise conflict and ensure we all get to enjoy why we come here. COASTAL DYNAMIC and SAND DUNE PROTECTION Beach erosion and accretion processes continue unabated along our section of coast, observing these changes is part of the pleasure of the beach walk. As you walk along the Ocean Grove beach today the toe of the sand dune is a distance behind the fence line, about where it was 25 years ago, compared with the above photo at 10W late April 2009. We would welcome any old photographs of the beach and sand dune, especially those that are dated or record a storm event or other change along our foreshore, please contact out office on 5254 1118 if you can help us build our history of beach change. SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES As part of our ongoing commitment to minimising our carbon footprint, Barwon Coast is developing an Environmental Management System (EMS) for the whole of business that will enable us to measure and monitor how we use our resources with an aim to minimising use and reduce waste going to landfill. Both our Caravan Parks gained funding from the State Government’s Caravan Parks improvement grant program to support the changing over to sustainable lighting, removal of all incandescent light fittings and overall upgrading to high efficiency lighting. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to the promenade etc and coastal management generally by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager

A new life for Bluff view venue
Ben Davies.
BEN Davies opened Grind Burgers on August 20 after transforming one of the Terrace’s best located venues.
Ocean Grove Voice, October 7-20, 2009 - Page 21
The new venue specialises in burgers, coffee and offers a comfortable atmosphere for a quiet drink...or a loud one!
Looking over the Bluff and Bass Strait, and a deck to catch the afternoon sun out the front, what better place to enjoy a local wine or cold beer. “We tried to open as quietly as possible, to get all our kitchen systems and menus in order,” said Ben. “So we haven’t really advertised or done any marketing. “The response has been really good so far, a lot of local interest and support. We have been busy and getting a good spread of ages and backgrounds of clientele from school kids for Curly Fries in the arvo, to retirees who love the idea of a cheap feed and a good glass of red wine, with a burger!” Their trade consists of a mix of local and tourist...but for most of the year, they will be relying on local customers. Early next year Grind will be starting up home deliveries and also investigating the possibility of constructing a deck out the back. Before starting a career in hospitality, Ben was previously
in IT, and more recently he worked for a Shark Fishing Charter Business in Queenscliff in marketing and graphic design, as well as Customer Service. He has also been employed by Deakin University and has worked with Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. Ben was the original owner of 7th Wave Restaurant, also in Ocean Grove, for four years has started a second business in Ocean Grove, because, he said, “I just love the place! “The whole area is amazing...I love the lifestyle, and the beaches and the local trade means meeting some great people...so there is not much to complain about!” Ben has lived in Ocean Grove for about eight years and moved to Point Lonsdale as a young child. He has lived locally most of his life, apart from spending some time in London and Darwin. Outside of Grind, Ben is a bit of a movie buff who loves fishing and watersports.

I AM the owner of “The Red Pigeon’ which is a newly opened gift and homewares store in Hitchcock Avenue Barwon Heads. The business started in 2003 as an online retailer which showcased a range of Australian made and imported handbags and wallets designed by myself. Following a desire from clients to view the range of various products retailed by the business, the Red Pigeon opened its first store in Pakington Street Newtown in May 2008 and with an increased range of suppliers and quirky innovative products designed to suit the coastal lifestyle this latest move to Barwon Heads is a prefect fit for the business as it expands. My husband, Phil, and I made the decision to uproot the family from Melbourne’s Bayside suburbs five years ago and now live on a few acres out at Wallington. I love the peace and quiet that Wallington offers and I have declared numerous times that I will never move back to Melbourne! Our three young children relish the open spaces of Wallington, the beaches of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, and the
fantastic people of this thriving community. In the time we have been here, we have made some amazing friendships and they have all been extremely supportive of my business ventures. The Red Pigeon currently employs eight staff, both permanent and casual, across both the Barwon Heads and Newtown shops, and all of the staff live locally here on the Bellarine. Since opening in Barwon Heads on Sept 12 there has been an excellent public response with plenty of interest from both tourists and locals alike. The Barwon Heads store is located on the old Signature Restaurant site and is just a few doors up from the Barwon Heads Newsagency in Hitchock Avenue and for those with children, the (also) new Scandanavian Ice Cream shop is right next door! In conjunction with providing the Bellarine with some unusual and rather colourful gift ideas, The Red Pigeon also regularly provides donations and ancilliary support to various local primary school events as well as other community driven fundraisers. Aside from running The Red

to our farm in north east Victoria for short breaks where the peace and quiet are most welcome. Moving to the Bellarine has given me business opportunities that I may well have never had in Melbourne, and it has provided my family and I with an amazing sense of community spirit! Geelong Seniors Festival The Geelong Seniors Festival is the largest community celebration for seniors in regional Victoria. Held throughout the month of October (1-31 October), the Festival features a huge variety of events and experiences, including competitions, workshops, dances, concerts and tours.
The Geelong Seniors Festival is a major partner of the statewide Victorian Seniors Festival which will be staged from 4-11 October in 2009.
Why the City does this Geelong Seniors Festival recognises the valuable contribution older people make to Geelong and aims to promote positive ageing within the community.
What you can expect As well as being a great opportunity to get out and about for little or no cost, the Festival provides a rare insight into what is on in Geelong for the rest of the year as most of the events are staged by local clubs and interest groups. The Companion Card is welcome at all Geelong Seniors Festival events.

schools into more permanent structures that can’t be burnt down when a cooking fire gets out of control. People from Ocean Grove have been involved in fundraising for Malawi years before Robyn made her first trip, but through Mphatso, she has been overwhelmed by how much people have helped. Whether it be through money or item donations, workshop volunteers or people like Judy and the Johnsons flying over to help out personally, Ocean Grove has given so much to a part of the world most of us would never see. “I can’t even begin to tell you what the people of this area mean to me personally and to people in Africa,” Robyn said. To raise money for the foundation, an auction of local Malawian art and carvings will be held at Buckleys Entertainment Centre Friday October 16, tickets are available at Gumnut Grove Opportunity Shop or call 0434 922 638 Gumnut Grove will also be holding a garage sale November 7 with all proceeds going to Mphatso. To donate goods for the sale, contact Sonia at Gumnut Grove from the start of November. For those wanting to donate money or to find out how you can help visit www.mphatso.org.

said. Enjoying playing outside with kids that have so much less than he has, Jack gives a mature comparison between his life and theirs. “It was very different over there, children here are always inside watching TV and playing play-station but there, they’re always outside playing.” Lena Johnson, a close friend of Robyn’s, had visited Malawi previously but wanted to take Jack and Bethany so they could experience a different, less fortunate culture than they know. “We wanted the kids to see the world through different eyes… and change their view of the world,” she said. Surfside teacher Judy Fletcher was inspired after hearing about Jack and Bethany’s trip and decided to volunteer her time and make the trip to the country. Judy gave teaching support to the women attempting to give over 100 children basic education in a nursery school made of only bamboo walls and sand floors. “It hit me as a teacher that they have nothing,” Judy said. A common theme from anyone who has visited Malawi is the sheer lack of everything we take for granted in Australia. Basic necessities are scarce however Robyn describes the local’s joy
for life and wish to share their meagre belongings with anyone they meet. “They’ve got nothing and yet they’ve got everything but they haven’t got food and they haven’t got basic medical,” said Robyn. While many would think making the trip to Malawi would be a difficult one, Lena found the most trying moment was visiting a supermarket after returning home. “Facing poverty there is hard but it’s harder to come back, really hard,” she said. Mphatso’s feeding program has made a difference in the area however it has only started to scratch the surface. People from all over Malawi walk to Robyn to request a nursery school for their village but all Robyn can do is add their name to an every growing list. “There are poor children everywhere, malnourished children everywhere,” she said. “When I look at some of our kids compared to the ones that are coming for help I think it’s making a huge difference.” Nursery schools aren’t the only endeavours Mphatso has been involved in over the last six years. The foundation also supports feeding programs, HIV support groups, community gardens, women’s and sewing groups and kids clubs. The next step involves making the thatched nursery

MALAWI has been described as the warm heart of Africa but possibly Ocean Grove is the warm heart of Victoria. For more than six years now, locals from around town have come together to volunteer time, money and resources to help people from small villages in Malawi improve their quality of life. Robyn Casey started up Mphatso Children’s Foundation six years ago after a life-changing trip to the African country. Based in the small village of Kande, on the edge of Lake Malawi, Robyn has helped in the setting up of 10 nursery schools for over 1000 children aged two to six years. The nurseries were originally created to feed local children porridge that more often than not is their only nutritional meal for the day. At only five cents per bowl, schools like Surfside Primary School have jumped on board to help fundraise. Two Surfside students, Jack Johnson, 11 and hi sister Bethany, 10 travelled to Malawi this year with their parents to help distribute over 100 educational packs to children. The three-week stay at Kande allowed Jack and Bethany the chance to mix with the local children with Jack taking the opportunity to immerse himself in local activities. “I played soccer nearly every day,” he

Club honours Reg
A HUGE ovation greeted the announcement of the inaugural Club Person of the Year at Ocean Grove Bowling Club’s recent Presentation Night. A quiet achiever, Reg Hungerford (pictured above) was duly recognised for his dedicated contribution to the Club over the 2008-2009 bowls season. Reg has been the men’s tournament director for 7 years and has organised in excess of 150 tournaments. He is always present at working bees and assists the greens staff whenever requested. Reg is the type of bloke all clubs need because of his selfless attitude and willingness to help wherever and whenever needed. Reg and his wife, Marg have been married for 51 years, have 4 children and 8 grandchildren. After retiring in 1997 they travelled Australia for a few months and decided to settle in Ocean Grove because of the quiet country living and to be close to their daughter who was in Geelong. (They are also keen “Cats” supporters). Soon after moving here, Reg and Marg both joined the Bowling Club and both proved to be invaluable members. Reg was born and bred in the Swan Hill area where he played football at Tooleybuc, played tennis until he was 61 and was also a keen golfer. He worked for 40 years with Mobil Oil Company in Swan Hill. Since his move to “the Grove” Reg has also proven himself an accomplished bowler and has quite a list of achievements to his name, including: Twice veterans champion, President’s handicap, 100 Up handicap, GDBA “B” Grade skippers award, 4 Premiership flags, and Twice veteran’s pairs champion with Keith Goldsmith.
You’re invited to join the fun at Ocean Grove Bowling Club between 11am and 2pm

So you think you can surf LAST Tuesday saw local girls catching waves and busting moves on the Ocean Grove foreshore as a part of the annual Billabong’s Girls Get out There day, writes Carly Helweg. The sun was out after the weekend’s rain with surf conditions which were perfect for beginners to hit the waves in a fun, girls’ only environment. MC Steph Hickey said they had been very lucky to miss the bad weather. “There’s great waves today,
Mother Nature is on our side and beginners don’t need huge waves to learn, it’s just been perfect,” she said. Steph said the day is great for promoting a fit and active lifestyle as well as giving the teens a confidence boost. “For kids that usually couldn’t afford the opportunity and otherwise might be intimidated by the male dominated surf environment, this is just for young girls.” So You Think You Can Dance
competitors Kat and Timomatic were on hand to teach the girls dance routines and the chance to show off their talent in an event that is as much about dancing as surfing. Dance’s Kat enjoys the chance to teach the girls in a totally different environment than usual. “I’ve never taught a class outdoors before, usually you get hot in the studio but out here it’s nice and open,” she said. “It’s one of the best classes I’ve taught, the girls really want to try

new things.” Timomatic pushed the girls to try new moves in his class and they responded enthusiastically. “We learnt a lot of things we haven’t done before and did dancing that took us out of our comfort zone,” said Ellen Giulfoyle. Ocean Grove is the last stop on Billabong’s tour down the east coast but plans are already in place for next year’s event. “Ocean Grove is always great, it’s definitely on the calendar for next year,” Steph said.
