TARGET says Ocean Grove “will have a Target Country store by November this year”. Target is working closely with new site owner and developer Ocean Grove Enterprises and builder Dzine Constructions Group to ensure the $10 million project goes ahead as quickly as possible, with works expected to recommence on the site at the corner

of Presidents Ave and The Parade after Easter. Target Australia Managing Director Launa Inman said she was extremely pleased that the issues surrounding the Ocean Grove store had been resolved. “We have wanted to become a part of the Ocean Grove community for a long time and we can now move forward and deliver a convenient Target Country store with great value clothing and homewares for local residents,” Ms Inman said. “We’re hoping to have the store open well before Christmas this year.” Dzine director Michael Russ confirmed that the matter had been resolved and that contractors would be back on site after Easter. He also said that it had managed to retain prevoius contractors which would soon bring about 50 mainly local workers to the site.

Fair go to park

THANKS to the success of the January Tranquility Fair the Ocean Grove Park Management Committee resolved to spend up to $5,000 on play equipment suitable to meet the heavy demand by pre-school children. After meeting several mothers at the park, it was clear that an extra toddlers swing was required to minimize queuing by the young ones and that the addition of a see-saw would be welcomed. The see-saw is now in place, as is the structure on which to place the swing. However, to ensure the safe fall area for the swing, some adjustment is required to the play-

ground surrounds before the swing is connected. The allocated funds will also allow the purchase of another small piece of equipment. The committee also determined to purchase the materials and safety mats to be placed under each of the 5 swings and at the end of the existing slide in the 2 playgrounds. The cost of the materials being almost $2,600. The installation of the equipment and safety mats, including the construction of the timber bases for the mats, was undertaken over the last 2 week-ends by volunteers.

Bouquet for Ocean Grove florist AN Ocean Grove florist has outshone some of Melbourne’s best wedding suppliers to win a major bridal industry award. What is more remarkable is the Grove florist – Beachside Blooms – has only been in business for two years and was also a finalist last year. Beachside Blooms in the Terrace has won the 2009 Victorian Annual Bridal Industry award for Floral Design. The placings are awarded as a result of nomi-

nations by customers rather than judging on the day. Proprietor Shelley Keast said she was proud to have achieved the recognition. Since September last year Beachside Blooms has supplied flowers to 76 weddings in Ocean Grove and Geelong as well as Melbourne.

Shelley Keast receives the ABIA award.

a day in the life - carl verbeek

Bowled over by the Grove I WAS born in Rotterdam, Holland and lived in the suburb of Katendright. After I finished my National Service in 1961, my family – consisting of my Mother and Father, three brothers, a sister and myself – emigrated to Australia. We flew into Sydney and were then transported to Bonegilla Migrant Hostel by steam train. This was an overnight trip and it was very cold indeed. After only a short space of time, my father came down to Melbourne to look for work. We all then moved to the migrant hostel in Brooklyn near Footscray, where I met my future wife. My first memories of Ocean Grove are of sharing a site at Raffs Beach with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law and their family. We had a caravan and liked the beach so much that we hired our own site and came with our

two children for a number of years. We decided to build a holiday home and by the time it was completed, we had decided to live in it permanently. I have now lived in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove for 22 years. I really can’t find fault with the town and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. However, if I was forced to do so, I would move to a small unspoilt beach near Coffs Harbour called Moonee Beach. Whale watching in season is superb and you can see them from the beach or, for a closer look, on the headland there. We have everything we need in Ocean Grove and have the place to ourselves except for the summer holiday period. This influx of people helps the local economy enormously. I can’t complain about the crowds and the lack of parking at this time as I was once one of those people! Ocean Grove has great sporting facilities including the beach, skate park and the lovely swimming pool. Before retiring, I was a Project Manager for Transfield Construction and to name a few projects, I was involved in the laying of the natural gas pipeline from Geelong to Port Campbell; installing the new refining plant in the Century Zinc Mining project; looking after maintenance for the Mount Isa Zinc Corporation and the last project was refurbishing the Melbourne trams.

Currently I am on the Board of Management of the Ocean Grove Bowling Club and am also a member of the Ocean Grove RSL. After completing my National Service as a young man, I joined the RSL in later years and have co-ordinated the Edinburgh Shield for the last three years. This is a bowling tournament which is held every year at a different country location for members only. Since giving up golf at least 18 years ago, I have been a bowler. A lot of my time is spent organising the extensions to the Ocean Grove Bowling Club and the redevelopment of the Club’s caravan park. Also bowling, of course! The important things in my life are my family, home and of course my four grandsons – then bowling. My family will probably disagree! My favourite part of Ocean Grove is the older part with all the trees. There is easy access to shopping, doctors, library, cafes etc. If I was mayor of Ocean Grove I would try to create a better public transport system for the area. Of course the inevitable problem of parking would have to be addressed, among other issues. I think that the Terrace shopping strip will grow over the years with more houses and buildings behind the Terrace being bought up and developed for businesses and shops. I will be personally very happy when the Target project is completed, as this site is an eyesore.

Book signing with war vet’, journalist LOCAL author, playwright and journalist Bernard Clancy will sign copies of his book Best We Forget at Ocean Grove Newsagency in The Terrace on Easter Saturday. Best We Forget is an acclaimed novel about the Vietnam War based on Clancy’s personal experiences as a National Serviceman in Vietnam in 1968-69 as personal secretary to the Australian Commander In Chief and also in Army Public Relations. The book has been described by one critic as “Australia’s Catch 22.” It has the “can’t put it down” factor, according to many readers. Best We Forget is the fast-paced story of Brian “Donkey” Simpson and his mates, caught in a war between powerful ideologies which none of them understand. It is an out-of-control roller coaster of classic farce, intrigue, double-cross, espionage – and black, black humor. Bernard is also the author of the play Foxholes of the Mind which will be produced at the prestigious La Mama theatre in Melbourne in 2010. Bernard came to Ocean Grove from Melbourne eight years ago. “I just fell in love with the beach,” he said. “My partner Christy and I are on it constantly, either walking, swimming or boogie boarding. It’s fantastic. “And being originally a country boy, I just love the country town feel of Ocean Grove. We find the people are so friendly and the general ambience of the place is so relaxing. We love it here.” Bernard’s career has always been as a professional writer, beginning in journalism. He is a

Dolls in the war effort LInda Brown left today, and right as a Pix cover girl during the war.

OCEAN Grove’s Linda Brown admits she didn’t initially realize how important her photographs were to lonely servicemen missing home during the war. Linda sang at town hall dances around Melbourne before following sailor husband Bill to Sydney, his ship’s port of call in the ‘40s. It was there that Linda started modeling and was introduced to the photographer Reg Johnson. While working with Reg, often doing commercial shoots for Grace Bros, David Jones and Lux Soap, the snapper asked her if he could put a portrait of hers in a Pix magazine cover girl competition. Linda agreed and they pledged to split the money if they won. Linda’s face traveled widely on those magazines and soon she was gaining interest from American,

British and New Zealand servicemen as well as Aussies serving in the magazine’s distribution area. Linda received more than 170 letters from admirers, addressed in the most polite of ways imaginable, often asking simply for a return letter for her to grant them permission to be their pin up girl. “On behalf of the rest of the boys, whose morale is kept high by your smiling photograph, I send you my best wishes and hope to hear from you just once,” wrote one. Linda’s husband Bill not only gave his blessing to his wife replying to the letters, he insisted she did as he said it was important to help their morale. Those letters will form a major part of a film called Paper Dolls whic screens on SBS Television on Friday April 24, at 7.30pm.

The butterfly is considered to be a pest as it feeds on cultivated cabbages, broccoli, radish, brussel sprouts, beetroot, and mustard crops. The caterpillars live on the crops and lay eggs on the leaves. The caterpillars are green and well camouflaged, and the live on the underside of leaves so they hide from predators (birds are the main predator). The caterpillar forms a pupa and then emerges as a butterfly. The butterflies are diurnal and they are strong fliers. The upperside wing is creamy white with black tips. Females also have two black spots in the centre of the uppser forewings. The Underneath wings are a tinge of yellow with speckles of black. Mics open for festival The Ocean Grove Arts Network [OGAN] is planning the Ocean Grove Open Mic Music Festival to be held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend in cafes and bars along The Terrace. Open mics are the flavour of the day and Ocean Grove is full of talented musicians. The weekend can’t help but be a feather in Ocean Grove’s cultural cap, providing entertainment for locals and visitors. Most importantly it gives our musicians an oportunity to perform before a live audience. There will a venue and times for children, teenage and adult performers. Each performance will be alocated 30 minutes with a quick change over between acts. It will be mostly a free festival with an optional gold coin donation. The Bellarine Secondary College year 12 VET music performance will open the festival on Friday night in the chicken shop.[$5 entry] The headline act Chris Wilson on Saturday night will have a $10 entry charge. OGAN is seeking volunteer musicians and stage managers. Those interested can email oganopenmic@ gmail.com <mailto:oganopenmic@gmail.com> or pick up an expression of interest form at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop.

Grove schooled author returns THE Cloudchasers is a recent release from Ocean Grove son David Richardson and Steven Hunt who have combined the concept of a story picture book with a graphic novel resulting in an original book combining digitally created illustrations and a well crafted narrative tale for children and adults alike. David attended school in Ocean Grove and Queenscliff and loved stories of adventure and fantasy, which presented dark and light sides in the narrative. David has three sisters, one who lives in Ocean Grove and the other two who live between Ocean Grove and Cape Bridgewater/Portland. He has worked in film and advertising as a screenwriter. Steven is an award winning graphic designer and illustrator. The Cloudchasers is their first book with a sequel due later in the year. The Cloudchasers is a fantasy adventure opening in the fictional oppressive town called “Bankertown” where rules are steadfast and creativity, imagination and individuality are against the law. Alice who spends her time drawing images she sees in the clouds is viewed as a troublemaker and is

destined for the Institute of Creative Conformity. Alice wishes there was somewhere other than Bankertown to escape to. Suddenly her dream becomes a reality when she meets Spinner who spins a web for The Catcher to arrest Alice. On the run she hides in the wicker basket of a hot air balloon at the obsolete fairground. Escaping capture the ropes are cut and off she flies taking Spinner and Thomas with her high into the clouds and other worlds of excitement and darkness. The Cloudchasers will be the feature title at bookgrove’s official opening on Easter Monday from 11am. David Richardson and Steve Hunt will be in store for signings.

Offshore for challenge GOLDEN Breed Longboard Challenge was run at Ocean Grove in sparkling 30 degree off shore conditions at the weekend. Local longboard club SOUL was the host of the event which brings together longboard clubs together for a fun, social and competitive day. This year, three West coast clubs, SOUL, Pt Lonsdale, and Surfcoast were joined by East coast’s Maladiction to vie for the title. Fifteen surfers are selected from each club who then surf in a graded format to gain points. SOUL club vice president Chris Meier said ‘today is probably about as good as it gets for Ocean

Grove and it was great that it happened to be on a day that we can showcase this area to the other clubs’. A social function and presentation was held at the Ocean Grove Golf club on the Saturday night with heaps of great giveaways thanks to Golden Breed. With fine food and live music a good night was had by all who attended. In the end a close victory was taken out by Surfcoast from SOUL. Pt Lonsdale put in a good performance to take 3rd from Maladiction. By Andrew Brown.

THE Grove are celebrating two major bowls premierships with wins in both the Ladies and Men’s Division 1 grand finals held recently. The Ladies took on the strong Queenscliff team at Drysdale in perfect bowling conditions. The Grove got off to a good start with some great bowls being played, especially in Val Cook’s rink of Andra Kuschert, Marlene Sutton and Nancy Quinton. Queenscliff fought back to be within a few shots just after the lunch break. Lorraine Hunt’s rink of Liz Braley, Pat Virtue and Marg Dower, were having a real tussle with some brilliant bowls being produced by both teams. With about 15 ends remaining the Grove appeared to be in control but Queenscliff rallied again converting some good heads and they took the lead by one shot with only 2 ends to play. Gail Meddings rink of Marion Brown, Val Crumbie and Joy Pugh were going well at this stage with an 8 shot lead and came down to their rink and Lorraine Hunt’s rink in the deciding ends. Lorraine’s girls held 4 shots until the Queenscliff third sliced the jack where the Grove had one bowl. In Gail’s rink our girls held one and a measure with good position bowls. Fortunately for us, the Queenscliff skippers both just missed getting the shot and our girls didn’t have to play their last bowls. The Grove Premiers by two shots and some serious celebrating back at the Club. Well done girls. The will be playing for the State Championship zone title at Colac on the 7th April. We wish

oceangrovevoice.com

them well. In the Men’s Final, Ocean Grove took on the young brigade from Bareena at Eastern Park in front of over 400 spectators. The Grove dominated throughout the season and went into the game as hot favourites, having beaten Bareena twice throughout the year. Bareena won the first end on all four rinks but the Grove steadied and held a 9 shot lead at half time, mainly thanks to a handy lead on John Fry’s rink of Gary Burkett, Doug Woods and GeoffFry. The rink of Norm Thomas, Terry Brady, Andrew Gower and Dale Kett were having a close game as was the rink of Rod Swan, Ron Brown, Peter Patterson and Peter Nixon. Probably the toughest assignment was Ken Thomas’s rink of Chris Deppeler, John McConville and Michael Allen who were playing alongside a very parochial Bareena crowd that were doing their utmost to distract our players. In the end, it was a great team effort by the Grove boys who held on to win the flag by 8 shots in an exciting days bowls. The Ocean Grove men travelled to Warrnambool last Sunday to play off in the Champions of State pennant competition against the premiers from the Portland, Warrnambool and Colac Districts. The Grove had 3 reasonably close games and came through the day undefeated. They now travel to Barham to play off for the Champions of State against 7 other group winners and the 2 metropolitan premiers early next month.

Whites Natalie James and Patrick West got their team back into the contest with a strong 6-2 win over Jess Bray and Zaine Cordy, but with Jake and Sophia combining like they have all season they prevailed over Corrinne Reid and Michael Douglas 6-3 for an overall 4-31 to 2-26 deserved victory. Clear points but tough start By Mark Heenan

OCEAN Grove (21.14.140) made an impressive start to its 2009 Bellarine Football League campaign with a comprehensive 59-point win over Modewarre (13.3.81) at Modewarre Reserve on Saturday.

The Grubbers had plenty of options up forward with swashbuckling goal sneak Paul Breguet kicking five majors, while Matt Jovanovic, Travis Gavin and inspirational skipper James Dalton all booted multiple goals. Ocean Grove Coach Matt Payne said it was a hard-fought win despite the final result. “It was a tough game, physically today that was one of the toughest games to start the season,” he said. “I think (Modewarre) maybe tried to unsettle us because we have a lot of young blokes. “But to their credit they keep on putting their heads over the footy.” Co-coach Greg Mervin praised Josh Milne’s efforts in making himself a presentable target,

while exciting utility Corey Normington made a dazzling return after a stint with Newtown and Chilwell in the GFL, kicking two goals and was one of his team’s leading possession winners. “In the second quarter you had Josh Milne leading hard up the ground which is his job, and the other was Corey Normington who played a fly half forward leading up the ground,” Mervin said. “He (Normington) was a terrific option for the ball carriers and for making good decisions. “I think they are the two players (Milne and Normington) that really helped us in the second quarter.” While Modewarre outscored Ocean Grove in the third quarter, the Grubbers regained composure in the final term with a six-goal blitz to ensure a comfortable win. Ocean Grove faces a tough task this weekend when it meets arch-rival Drysdale at home. IN the Reserve Grade Ocean Grove (21.13.138) thrashed Modewarre (3.5.23) by 115 points, while the Grubbers’ Under 18 team (32.18.210) Ocean Grove coach Matt Payne addresses his annihilated Modewarre (2.2.14) by 196 points. troops at the three-quarter time huddle.

‘Get back to wacking other clubs’: McCarthy FORMER Ocean Grove premiership coach Brendan McCarthy has told the new list of senior Grubbers ‘it’s time to get back to wacking other clubs’. By that the new Geelong assistant coach meant it was time for Ocean Grove to reassert itself as the most formidable club in the league. McCarthy also urged supporters to get behind the club but warned players “if they come to see you play they had better see a contested field. “If they do then success will follow on the field. I guarantee you will have success,” he said. McCarthy was speaking after receiving a number 1 ticketholder jumper from club president Geoff Cunningham.

Netball is back again

NETBALL has started for another year and everyone is excited. Some of the teams have their first game under their belts and the others to start very soon. Thanks to Trish Leahy and her band of helpers for sorting the 11 junior teams. Trish has had to find coaches for each team as well as making sure they all have somewhere to play. This is a task that is becoming more and more difficult. The club finds itself in 3 different locations this year to cater for the growing numbers. Seniors had a strong turn out for the pre season with lots of girls returning and some new ones coming along as well. The coaches are very optimistic and are expecting the teams to be very competitive. Megan Blake-Uren and Paula Birch will be doing a joint coaching role for the A & B grade teams this season. After coaching juniors

for some time this is Paula’s first time coaching at senior level, and she could have no better teacher than Megan. There have not been a lot of changes to the A grade line up but the most noticeable is the inclusion of Sharni Godfrey who has had an amazing start to the netball season for the Fliers and the promotion of one of last years stars in the B grade Miranda Comer. B grade is quite different with lots of comings and goings but is looking like it could have a good season. C grade has some different players but some of the old faces returning also. This team will be coached by Cheryn Jones. D grade team will be coached by Miranda Comer, and this team sees the return of some of the clubs previous members. The club wishes everyone an enjoyable and successful season. By Lorraine Birch
