Call to grab a community grant OCEAN Grove is discovering the rewards that many towns around Australia are experiencing by having its own Community Enterprise. The second community grant round for 2010 is now open and will benefit local community groups. The May 2010 round had provided over $7,000 to local needy organisations that find it difficult to raise money. Chairman Jon Mamonski says that by keeping money in Ocean Grove, local organisations directly benefit. “Locals who bank with the Bendigo Bank, are members of GMHBA or businesses that
use Geelong Telco just need to ask that Ocean Grove Community Enterprise be their local charity and these service providers will donate part of their profit back to Ocean Grove and that’s how we get to give the money to local groups. It’s that simple,” Jon said. The local organisations that benefited from the May grant round were: Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre $3,500 for local youth support programs; Ocean Grove Calisthenic College, $1,000 towards a Calisthenics Props Trailer; Ocean Grove Mic Festival 2010, $1,000 to help promote the Festival; Ocean Grove Rotary Club, $1,000 to help promote the community markets; and
Ocean Grove Carols In the Park, $1,000 to help stage this annual community event. Jon explained, “Our purpose is to support local organisations who find it difficult to attract sponsorships and project funding. “The Ocean Grove Community Enterprise has a dedicated team of local community leaders that work hard to raise money for local groups and the current grant round gives local organisations the chance to underpin their important projects.” For more information about applying for one of the grants see the advertisement on page 26.

FIREFIGHTERS had to turn their hand to traffic management on Friday night when they were forced to shut a lane on the Barwon Heads Bridge. Crews were called to the bridge after it appears that sparks from welding or cutting gear caused timbers to smoulder long after workers had left the site. Because of the difficulty in reaching the area - on part of the half demolished old bridge - crews had to park up in the Grove bound lane. However the crews soon had traffic alternately flowing along the new footbridge until police arrived to assist.

Simply ask: “Are you okay?” and help stop little problems from turning into big problems. More than 1000 organisations are expected to take part in R U OK?

GEELONG City Council has applied for two grants to help Ocean Grove’s struggling kindergartens. A $200,000 grant from the department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Renovation and Refurbishment Grant scheme will help give 50 new places at the Ocean Grove Kindergarten for the 2012 school year. The department also invited the City to submit an application of funding of up to $1 Million to help develop an integrated children’s centre hub in the town. Local Councillor Jan Farrell said that Ocean Grove’s kindergartens were in great need of funding. “With the population growth on the Bellarine Peninsula there is clearly a lack of kindergarten infrastructure in Ocean Grove. Cr Farrell said. “We know that we need to deliver extra capacity in a very short time frame. An interim measure for 2011 will see Surfside and Ocean Grove Kindergartens working together to

Ocean Grove residents should have a safe way of crossing Presidents Avenue by the end of the year. A pedestrian crossing linking the Ocean Grove library and community health centre with Ocean Plaza is still on Geelong City Council’s agenda. Manager of Engineering Services, David Hannah said that design work for the project is currently underway. “Detailed design work is being undertaken for the pedestrian crossing with installation expected to commence in late October 2010, he said.
ALDI supermarkets have confirmed they are still interested in opening a store in Ocean Grove. An ALDI spokeswoman said that while they are still looking at establishing a store in the town, a site has not yet been secured. Councillor Jan Farrell from Geelong City Council said that ALDI has been in discussion with the City about rezoning land in Ocean Grove. “They are very keen to locate in Ocean Grove, she said. “Our Structure Plan supports them going into the retail precinct. The budget supermarket chain has over 200 stores in Australia, however locals currently have to travel to Newcomb or Belmont to visit one of their stores. Grove hit by graffiti surge TWO Ocean Grove men have been arrested over a vandalism attack in Ocean Grove last weekend. Acting Sergeant John Dunstan from the Bellarine Police Station said the men aged in their early 20s were charged and bailed over the graffiti estimated at causing $3000 damage. Rex Walton of Ocean Grove faced Geelong Magistrates Court last Monday, receiving a 12-month suspended sentence. Several businesses in The Terrace including Ocean Grove Pizza, Home Hardware, Coles and the Medical Centre were spray painted with distinct tags about 4am Saturday morning. Witnesses who saw the men walking down The Terrace with spray cans called police. “It’s disappointing they occurred, but what’s more, it’s disappointing that local people decided to trash their own town,” Sergeant Dunstan said. Police believe the
men are part of a gang responsible for the recent spate of graffiti around Ocean Grove. “These sorts of operations will continue, they’re on notice,” Sergeant Dunstan said. “No tolerance will be shown to criminal or anti-social behavior.” On the same weekend, three Ocean Grove youths were issued with $475 infringement notices for disorderly conduct. The group were given the on-the-spot fines for vandalizing street signs at the Presidents Avenue and Madeley Street intersection. One of Ocean Grove’s iconic images painted on the side of the Pizza Place by Chris Stirk from Bush n Beach Artwork remains covered in unsightly graffiti. “I’ve been here forever and it’s never happened before,” he said.
The local art identity known as Stirk, said it was extremely disappointing to see the tags on top of his mural. “I wouldn’t paint a mural over their graffiti but they paint over mine,” he said. The mural has been a feature in The Terrace for over ten years and Stirk has changed the beach scene several times. He now has to figure out how to repair the damage. “I’ll try to touch it up but I use acrylic paint but they’ve used enamel so it might come through,” he said.
Artist Stirk said he was disappointed that graffiti vandals chose to spray over his work on the Ocean Grove Pizza and Pasta wall. Elsewhere the graffiti has spoiled a town that has been relatively untarnished for a number of years.

Telstra Country Wide celebrates 10 years
As part of our 10 - Year Celebrations we opened the doors of our Geelong Exchange for the first time to give locals a rare ‘behind the scenes’ look at how we connect thousands of calls per day throughout the Geelong region. With many people from the community taking the opportunity to see the wonderful work that occurs everyday from our field services staff, our customers thoroughly enjoyed the experience. One of our Community Partners, Barwon Youth, also had its fantastic Street Surfer Bus on show (refer picture below). Shane Murphy, Executive Director of Barwon Youth, said Telstra’s support of his Street Surfer Bus had made a huge difference to the lives of the region’s youth. “Through Telstra’s support and advancements in technology, we now have wireless internet access, remote television reception, electronic games equipment, two Play Stations, a DVD player, sound system and three flat screen LCDs,” he said. “Telstra’s continued innovation means that we can give our young people a happy, interactive and supportive place to come and assist those in need,” he added. Locals also had the opportunity to talk to our local Telstra Country Wide team and learn about some of the major telecommunications changes that have occurred over the last 10 years. It was a great experience for all our team to open up our exchange and share our 10-year anniversary with the people of Geelong.

Water rules eased up OCEAN Grove households will be able to water their gardens every day when water restrictions were eased to Stage 2 from last week. Premier John Brumby and local MP Lisa Neville have welcomed the announcement by Barwon Water. Mr Brumby said the easing of water restrictions would benefit households, sportsgrounds and public parks. “This is a fantastic day for the whole Geelong community who have done a great job using water efficiently over the past four years,” Mr Brumby said. “Barwon Water has been able to ease water restrictions as a result of recent rain, water saving efforts by the community and the new supply of water from the Anglesea Borefield.” Key changes to water restrictions from Wednesday 1 September include: • Gardens can be watered at anytime with a watering can, bucket or hand held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle; • Cars can be washed at home with either a bucket or high pressure water saving device; • The majority of sports grounds and public parks can now be watered; and • People planting drought tolerant lawn will have a 28 day exemption – up from 21 days. Greater Geelong’s water storages are 51.7 per cent of capacity while at the same time last year were 24.4 per cent. The Anglesea Borefield has added 2105 million litres of water to storages. The Greater Geelong region have been on Stage 3 restrictions or higher since September 2006. Last week’s announcement keeps Geelong’s on the same level of water restrictions as Melbourne. I’VE lived in Ocean Grove since 1983 where I built the house I live in today with my wife and two children. Before coming to Ocean Grove I came from a small Victorian farming town, Beeac. My family owned a dairy farm there where I grew up. As a child I attended Beeac Primary School and grew up to attend Colac High. In my late teens I moved to Melbourne, to become an apprentice boiler maker. I met my wife Lynn while living in Melbourne, later moving to Torquay where we stayed for several years. I’m still a boilermaker, presently working for an engineering company called Uptime Services who work with steel fabrication and
installation. I usually work on site and have recently had the privilege of working interstate on major upgrades of water storage facilities. Living on a dairy farm, as a child, I was constantly surrounded by machinery and vehicles – a love which has stuck with me until now. When I was 12 my dad bought me my first car, a Ford Anglia ute that I drove around the farm non-stop. Since then I’ve had numerous cars and motorbikes through which I’ve acquired mechanical skills that I recently put to use, restoring a 1948 Daimler. I completed this project which was a complicated but very rewarding experience. While living in Torquay we started looking for
land to buy when we came across Ocean Grove. We loved the beautiful beaches and the nearby coastal towns. We found some land that was covered in blackberry bushes and tee-tree, met by a gravel road and thought, “This is us!” At this time there were only two houses in the street and the surrounding areas were vacant blocks and open paddocks. We could walk from our house straight across to the beach due to the lack of fences. I can remember the gravel street being washed away many times during floods and heavy rainfall. While planning the design for our house we developed an interest in alternative building. We decided to use mud bricks and recycled timber
which set about the three year task of building our own home. We built the house on the principle of passive solar design for the warmth during winter and to keep cool during summer. As our children, Elizabeth and Tom, took over the house we realised we needed an extension. In keeping with the alternative theme of the house, we decided to build using straw bales. In my spare time I enjoy riding my mountain bike around Ocean Grove’s bike track and paths and also on the Bellarine Peninsula’s rail trail. I also love to ride my motorbike along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne for breakfast on Sunday mornings. I try to leave quickly so as to not wake the neighbours, but
my neighbour Pete asked me to warm the engine a bit longer because he likes the sound. Years ago Ocean Grove had little to offer in entertainment. But going to venues, such as the Piping Hot Chicken Shop, has allowed us to see some world class bands. This is part of the progress Ocean Grove has made and continues to make, with wonderful assets like the aquatic centre and new shopping centres. We love Ocean Grove for all it has to offer – the nature reserve, the beaches and the friendly atmosphere. And as Ocean Grove grows, it retains its coastal town beauty, allowing it to be our little piece of paradise.

Arty new life Dear Editor Since moving to the Barwon Heads area in January 2010, our lifestyle has changed. My family have become more active in the outdoors, whether it be surfing at the beach or playing a game of netball. It was six weeks ago that I discovered something a little different from the normal children’s activities offered in the local community. Art is now a part of my after school activity and I thoroughly enjoy
it. Since starting art I have surprised myself of what I achieve. I am currently doing art lessons at STUDIO ONE with Karen McGlynn in Barwon heads. I highly recommend any Kids to give it a go, as to produce what I have in such a short time in extremely rewarding ; I would have to say it’s better than winning a netball grand final Go art for Kids Ali Gannon grade five Ocean Grove.
Former Ocean Grove Primary School student George Whitworth caught up with news in the Voice while at Butley Abbey Farm in Suffolk, UK. George is now attending high school in England.

Dear Editor Loved the article "Day in the life - Mark Hyland". For all the things that Mark says he loves about Ocean Grove I think he is a little too humble to acknowledge what the Ocean Grove community has received from him. Mark has contributed so much to the community which he obviously feels a part of. I remember Mark helping in so many auction nights and other fundraising

events over the years since he came to our town. Events like The Apple Fair, The Tranquility Fair, Carols by Candlelight and a very long time ago a deb dress fashion parade for the Ocean Grove Football/ Netball club, just to name a few. Hey Mark, I know we thanked you at the time but thanks again for all you have added to our great community. Just one grateful Ocean Grove Resident.
VIP N NIGHTS IGH FOR YOUR FUNDRAISING
INVOLVED: Grove resident and Bay FM presenter Mark Hyland is either running the line for junior soccer matches, surfing or MCing fundraisers.
“I WONDER what our friends in Melbourne are doing?” I often ask that question when the family’s at Ocean Grove beach on a hot summer day! My friends in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne where my wife and I grew up are jealous. I started breakfast radio on K-ROCK in Geelong in 1996 and commuted from Melbourne for 18 months until my wife and I and three young kids moved to Ocean Grove on Australia Day 1998. I moved to BayFM seven years later and am still on air there. For me, Ocean Grove means ‘community’. When I see things like the CFA crew shaking tins, surf life savers, festivals or carols organised by volunteers, it makes me feel proud to live here. I often help at fundraisers MCing or being auctioneer at the annual Good Friday Appeal Auction at The Mex. The Good Friday Appeal at the
Mex won’t be the same after the passing of Ocean Grove CFA Captain Bob Smith. Every Good Friday eve at The Mex he was buying stuff he probably didn’t need, to help others. My thoughts are with all at OG CFA. Bob was a part of this community that can never be replaced. The new pool, which my daughter enjoys over summer holidays, and the proposed new sporting precinct near the Surfside Centre are very exciting for the town. My boys started playing indoor soccer Saturday morning at the Surfside Centre 11 years ago and the youngest is now goalie for the Waves 2nds. Thanks Brian and Peter for starting soccer in Ocean Grove! Sporting clubs in towns like Ocean Grove breed that sense of community. Which leads me to Ocean Grove Cricket Club. I love my cricket. Not bragging, but that D
Grade Player of The Year trophy looks mighty fine on the mantle piece. Well, it would if I was allowed to put it there. A highlight for me and another demonstration of community spirit and camaraderie of a sporting club, was watching my boys play junior cricket. The day they batted together in u/17s and made about 5 in 20 overs to stop Collendina winning outright was priceless. They had a ball. The team finished bottom, but “Mr. Cricket” Craig D’Arcy made sure they enjoyed themselves and they made great friends. There’s that feeling of community again. Another important part of the community is this paper. Everyone seems to read it and comment about who they’ve seen. It’s great for the town. I hope it continues reporting on the community for years to come. My favorite thing about Ocean Grove is the beach and the
2010 Victorian seniors festival As Minister for Senior Victorians, I recently launched the 2010 Victorian Seniors Festival to be held from October 3 -10. With over 1,000 free or low cost festival events and activities across Victoria, there is something to suit everyone.
weekend early surf. Sure the water gives you an ice-cream headache this time of year, but when Mick rings me and Steve at 5pm every Friday, the anticipation builds and we meet with a few of the regulars at stupid o’clock for the Saturday surf. As we paddle out at Ocean Grove at sunrise, it’s serene and idyllic. The sky turns a bright orange, a couple of seagulls skim low over the water, the smell of bacon and eggs wafts across from The Dunes. Then, whack! The sleep is washed out of my eyes by an icy blast of Southern Ocean swell. After a solid fight through a few sets, I sit on my board panting and starting to feel a bit warmer. Mick’s up and riding on the first wave of the day…as usual, and I watch the sun rise over the Point Lonsdale lighthouse. It doesn’t get any better than this. Hmm, I wonder what our friends in Melbourne are doing?

No napping on zoo snooze A GROUP of year eight students have had a unique chance to sleep with the animals. The Bellarine Secondary College students experienced the Melbourne Zoo at night as they slept in an empty elephant enclosure. After a nighttime tour to see the nocturnal animals, the year eights camped out overnight and had breakfast with the animals, taking part in morning feeding time before other visitors arrived. The students combined their ‘Zoo Snooze’ with a city tour for their two
day camp. The city getaway provided a comprehensive tour of Melbourne including visits to the Aquarium, Lygon Street, Southbank and the Yarra. Vice Principal Jon Shepherd said that the highlight of the trip was the visit to the Shrine of Remembrance. “The staff and students find it very moving and very educational,” he said. “It’s great for the kids from the Bellarine to go to the city and walk around because it’s very very different to home.”

Boys chance to float own boat UNDER
A LOCAL musician is helping young secondary students build their confidence whilst building a boat, writes Carly Helweg. The Bellarine Secondary College, year seven and eight students are part of a group that gives young boys the opportunity to get out of the classroom and take a hands on approach to learning. The 25 students are working on two boats, stripping them to their shell and rebuilding them. Blues and rock musician Chris Wilson takes the ‘Digging Deeper’ groups once a week to work on various projects in an attempt to teach them leadership and teamwork. Chris said that it gives the students the chance for conversation, discipline and
help with self esteem issues. “There are so many skills involved, we hand them instructions and they do it, from the smallest sanding tasks to safety when using power tools,” he said. “They’re capable of things they didn’t think they could do.” Fellow musician Steve McEwan started the program last year to try and engage young boys who may have disciplinary or truancy problems. The Heron style boats will be launched at St Leonards Sailing Club in term four where they will be moored for the boys to sail at any time. volunteering their time to help Chris and the students make the boats sea-worthy. Chris said that he is exceptionally proud of the work that the boys put into the project. “At the end of the session you can’t help but be proud of them, they’re proud,” he said.
Year eight student Josh Fadersen, 14 said that he has enjoyed sanding and cutting different parts for the boat. “I really like the hands on building, I’d rather do that instead of sitting in a chair,” he said.

Fundraiser’s farewell Ticke.5t0s $16re-show Geelong Performing Above: friends and family farewelled Avis at the Wave on Friday.
Left: Avis (centre) with family during the This is Your Life evening that was arranged in 2008 to celebrate her fundraising achievements.
OCEAN Grove’s legendary fundraiser Avis Clark sadly lost her long battle with cancer last month. On Friday at the Wave friends and family said farewell and thank you to a tireless worker for others. Avis, together with her husband Jack, joined the Ocean Grove Bowling Club in 1988 after moving from Melbourne. She and her family had holidayed here with friends for many years before settling here. Avis had always been involved in fundraising in Melbourne so it was without question that upon her arrival she immediately joined the
Bowling Club Fund Raising Committee. Avis was renowned for her many sauces, jams and chutneys that always sold like hot cakes on one of the many stalls she was involved with. Her time was spent selling raffle tickets and organising many fundraising events such as the Good Friday Appeal, sausage sizzles and trivia nights, together with the renowned Melbourne Cup Day. Over these 22 years many friendships were formed and there didn’t seem to be anyone that had not tasted her wares or snuggled up in one of her hand made rugs. In 2003 Avis was awarded Club Person of
the year by Clubs Victoria but Avis was more than an outstanding Club Person; she was an outstanding person. Avis spent her lifetime giving to others and even during her own fight against cancer she was always more concerned about how others were doing with their battles in life rather , than her own. Two years ago the bowling club and Melbourne friends celebrated her achievments with a ‘This is Your Life’ evening. A lady that shared her love and strength with those around her; her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Programmed for thrills and spills AN Ocean Grove man has shed some light on how theme park rides are put together, writes Carly Helweg. Audio and Visual specialist Huib de Bruijn has designed museum and theme park rides throughout Europe, Mexico and even Australia and now runs Bellarine Audio. As a technical consultant Huib attempts to give the visitors an experience, not just a ride. “If you don’t think about it and enjoy it then I have done my job properly,” he said. The Holland-born designer came out to live in Ocean Grove with his family four years ago and is now trying to bring his ‘experience creation’ to Australia. Huib has worked with major theme parks and museums over the last decade, bringing his audio and visual expertise to help develop interactive water slides, theatre shows and poignant memorials. At a water park in Italy, he worked to develop a voice controlled part of a new ride. “You come towards a water curtain in a boat and as soon as you start shouting it opens,” he said. Occasionally restricted by technology limitations, part of Huib’s job is to come up with ways to give the experience the attraction owners want. However, he said the most rewarding part is seeing the public’s reaction when they first experience it. “The first day when it’s open, people

go in there and the first boat of people that came down, they just applauded,” he said. He said the design and installation process is about getting everything to work together in the right way. “It’s like building a racing car, yes you have wheels, you have a steering wheel, you have all the bits and pieces but you have to tune it,” he said. The first project Huib worked on in Australia was helping to redesign the light installation at the Shrine of Remembrance to mimic the light that comes through on Remembrance Day. However he has found it tough to break into the industry in Australia. “The problem with this kind of work is Huib working on the last part of the National Sports that it’s a niche market,” he said. Museum in Melbourne’s MCG. It is due to open in late His most prized project is the September or October. National Dutch Rail Road Museum redevelopment in 2004. His job was to take away the static displays and make them more interactive for the increasingly technological public. “The average time in this museum was almost an hour and people were done with it, now it’s a full day,” he said. Huib said that he would like to work on improving local museums like the Queenscliff Discovery Centre and Maritime Museum but ultimately it’s expensive work. “You need a guy to program it, but you also need equipment, for some it’s just a bridge too far.”

Reggae fest set for OGH Ross Hannaford, Co-founder of legendary Australian rock band Daddy Cool, will be playing at The Ocean Grove Hotel on Friday, September 17, from, 6pm til late. The event will feature Jamaican reggae music and Ross will be joined by wellknown local musicians Tim Neal (a longtime collaborator with Hannaford), Jon Willard and the Scion Pirates. Scion Pirates specialise in early reggae, rocksteady and ska drawn from the Caribbean, Ethiopia and Nigeria. Also spinning a collection of hip-shakin, rare roots reggae will be DJ Tom Noonan (Stroke It Radio/Sounds System). The hotel is offering a Jamaican menu to go with the theme and there will be a door prize for the best dressed "Reggae Pirate". The Scion Pirates are: Dave Bambrook (drums); Tim Neal (sax, keys and backing vocals); Tim Fullerton (bass and backing vocals); Travis Brinnand (lead vocals and percussion); Jon Willard (guitar and vocals) and Douglass Matheson (sax and
backing vocals). Jon said the whole evening was an exciting development at the hotel which has a history of hosting major musicians. “This is pretty exiting. The OG hotel is kind of redeeming itself.” Talking about Ross, he said: “That great voice, he’s got a lot of stage presence.” Tim Neal’s association with Ross goes back to the Esplanade Hotel in the early 80s. “I was about 23 . it was a life changing experience. I was right into reggae and jazz. He is the grand wizard of Australian reggae.” Tim said that the music will be more obscure reggae, such as Count Ossie, rather than covers. “It’s sort of primal, early reggae music with a bit of Ross” Last time Ross played the ‘Collendina’ was with Daddy Cool in the 1970s. * Doors open at 6pm. Grab your tickets from the venue or from webtickets.com.au.

environment
Life at the grassroots: the earthworm THE great naturalist Charles Darwin, after making a careful study of earthworms, wrote this: "...it may be doubted if there are any other animals which have played such an important part in the history of the world as these lowly organised creatures." It's easy to take for granted the existence of some commonly found creatures in this world! But even the most undistinguished and wiggly and squishy creatures can be extremely interesting if you take the time to study them. Earthworms are widely found throughout the world except in deserts and in the north and south poles. There are over 6000 species of earthworm found thoughout the world. 'Worm' is a name given to diverse group of invertebrates (having no backbone) that have a long, soft body and no legs. Worms are found in many diverse habitats, including in freshwater and seawater environments, in rotting trees, within soil and on land. Some worms living
in the ground help to condition the soil while others thrive as parasites of plants and animals, including humans. In fact about half the world's population (over 3 billion people) are infected with at least one of the three worms — the large roundworm, hookworm and whipworm (Yikes)! In Australia there are 650 known species of native earthworm and 75 species that have been introduced from other countries. Introduced species are commonly found in agricultural environments along with native worms. Like snails, each individual earthworm is a “hermaphrodite”, which is an animal with both male and female sex organs. Each produces both sperm and eggs, but each worm’s eggs must be fertilized by the sperm of another worm – they cannot fertilize themselves. Therefore earthworms must still seek out mating partners, but both will receive sperm from the other. This sounds like a storyline from 'Bold and
the Beautiful'. The earthworm's body is made up of approximately 100 segmented bumps or units which all contain muscles, blood vessels and nerves. The body is perfectly symmetrical. The mouth is located on the base of the first body segment. As is seen in the photo, there is an external swelling after the first body segment, called the Clitellum, which serves the purpose of forming a cocoon or eggs. This is only found in mature adult earthworms. Earthworms cannot see or hear and they have no organs to detect sound. However they do have a sense of touch, and they have the senses of taste and smell. Earthworms exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide through a process of diffusion across their skin. Their bodies contain a basic vascular system that transports blood around their body. This property allows them to often grow very large, for example the Giant Gippsland Earthworm can grow to a length of ten feet. Fancy finding that in your compost bin!
Most earthworms feed on dead organic matter. They feed by passing dirt through their gut, from which nourishment is extracted, or by eating organic debris, including leaves that are found on the surface of the soil. This method of feeding does not require highly developed sense organs (such as eyes, which would be of little use underground) or foodcatching structures. Earthworms burrow into the dirt by passing successive waves of contraction and relaxation along the muscles of the body wall. They have no external appendages (no arms and legs) other than the bristles that stick out of their body, which are used to anchor the worm as it burrows. Earthworms move along by extending the front end of the body,
taking hold of their position using their front bristles, then retracting the bristles at the rear of the body and pushing up the rear end- they move by creating waves of muscular contractions. It has finally been raining over the past few months, and after it rains it is obvious that many worms become stranded on the ground surface, as excessive storm water floods the soil. While the earthworm has need of a moist environment across their skin both for comfort and respiration, if the soil in a storm becomes saturated, an earthworm may have trouble breathing and begins to drown. To save themselves they will escape to higher soil layers, or to the ground surface. However, if the surface where they
find themselves is unexpectedly paved, rocky, or compacted (hardened), they may become stranded and die from causes such as injury, heat, exposure, dehydration, or predation. Maybe earthworms should invest in a course of swimming lessons at the Surfside Centre. Worms play an important part in the e ecology of soil as they serve to improve the quality of the ground for plants. Soil consumed
by worms is excreted on the surface of the ground. The castings and the burrows themselves are exposed to the air and, therefore, aerate the soil, improving drainage and thus increasing its water holding capacity. The soil is 'cultivated' by being ground up in the worm's gizzard. Earthworms form the base of many food chains. They are preyed upon by many species of birds, snakes, mammmals such as foxes, and other invertebrates such as beetles, snails and slugs. There must be absolute carnage going on in our compost bins on a daily basis! By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Maintenance During Winter When the level of activity within the coastal reserves is at its lowest the opportunity is provided to undertake a range of maintenance activities and upgrades. Currently we are working on improving the beach access at 8W (Alderbaran Rd, Collendina) by constructing an additional section of steps across the top of the dunes replacing the old worn log and chain matting. We are installing new drinking fountains at several locations around the coast and to date have installed fountains at the playground in Flinders Parade, Barwon Heads; at the BBQ’s on the Barwon Heads river foreshore near the main jetty and the Ocean Grove Main Beach access near the Dunes cafe. Another upgrade program currently underway has been the replacement of old picnic tables with new at several locations, and a further replacement is planned at the Ocean Grove Main Beach. Works on the Ocean Grove Spit Over the next few months a great deal of activity will be observed on the river side of the Ocean Grove Spit with the construction of the next stage of Barwon Water’s sewer main replacement program from Pt Lonsdale thru to Black Rock. Two projects are proposed to be undertaken over the next 3 months being the boring under the Barwon River to take the new sewer main from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads and the construction of a new sewer main thru the Spit from the south end of the Riverview Family Caravan Park to the point when the river boring project will commence. During this time there will be considerable interruption to those walking, cycling along the trails thru the Spit. Two sections of temporary trail diversions have already been constructed and signage installed. We would ask for everyone’s understanding that these essential works need to be undertaken and the temporary pathways have been constructed for everyone’s safety. Please do not attempt short cuts by cutting across the construction sites – such action could put you at risk of injury.
Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove – Update Despite the difficult weather conditions work is proceeding apace at the site of the new $1m amenity block project at the Ocean Grove Main Beach As previously advised this is our largest ever self funded project. This project is the last major component of the Ocean Grove Main beach redevelopment project we commenced a decade ago starting with the relocation of the Surf Beach Road to the back of the coastal reserve, improving beach access safety for all visitors. The overall project cost including demolition and relocation of services is funded thru the successful operations of our two major caravan parks in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. No contribution from the local community, nor the municipality is required to deliver this substantial infrastructure development that will serve the growing population of Ocean Grove and increasing numbers of visitors. In recent weeks the building has really taken shape with the roof installation, block work walls laid and rendered and the feature timber poles on the beach side of the building erected. Coastal Management Plan Our volunteer Committee members recently met to discuss key issues that need to be included in our new 3 year Coastal Management Plan that is being developed. One of the major issues discussed being the impact of the local growth areas of Armstrong Creek and Ocean Grove and the pressure that the increased population will have on access to the regional beaches I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

Corey returns to the Pit
NATUROPATH FOR RELIEF OF:
- STRESS - FATIGUE - DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS PROMISING local cricketer Corey Walter is going back to where it all started. The 19-year-old agreed to join the Collendina Cobras for the 2010/11 season after three seasons with the Geelong Thirds grade in the highly competitive Victorian Premier Cricket League. The former Geelong Grammar student, who finished his schooling at the Grammar Corio campus last year, began his A-Grade senior career with the Cobras at the youthful age of 13. “I grew up here, I lived around the corner from the ground – I used to train with the older guys and play juniors throughout my younger days,” Walter said. “I’m really looking forward to coming back playing with the Cobras. “It’s pretty big commitment in Geelong (playing cricket) and after a big football season training three nights a week (at Geelong WestSt Peters who play in the GFL).” Walter is considered a talented all-rounder who can bat anywhere from 1 to 7 and is also a useful bowler with his variety of medium pace and spin. Walter scored 336 runs with the bat at an average of 25.80 and took 20 wickets at an average of 19.60 with the Geelong Thirds last season. Collendina coach Eddie Ellwood believes Walter’s

addition to the mix will be a plus for the defending A-Grade premiers. “Corey has been a very talented and promising player from an early age,” Ellwood said. “When he left us he was bowling medium pace at Geelong – but I would like to see him take up offspin.” While he is local, the passionate sports focused Walter has travelled the globe indulging in his summer passion that is cricket with opportunities provided through Geelong Grammar. Walter who went to Geelong Grammar on a scholarship in 2007, attended Bellarine Secondary College up until Year
nine. “I was very fortunate to go to Grammar and the first year I was there I was lucky enough to go to Western Australia on a cricket tour, the following year I went to New Zealand for two weeks,” he said. “Then in my final year at Grammar I was lucky enough to go to England for three weeks – It’s just amazing I don’t think I would get that opportunity anywhere else.” The Ocean Grove based local is a keen footballer after playing 17 games with Geelong West St Peters (GWSP) in the Geelong Football League this season. Walter, who crossed to GWSP in 2010 and was a member

of Ocean Grove Under 18’s premierships in 2009 and 2008, began his junior football career with the Collendina Cobras. The talented teenager joined former Grubbers players Ben Ricardo, Liam and James Rock, Blake Rodgers and Seamus Orr at the Roosters in the GFL this season. Outside of cricket, Walter enjoys travelling and will head to the Greek Islands at the end of the month for a two-week holiday. He will miss Collendina’s opening fixture on October 9, but is expected to don the cricket whites for the Cobras’ Round two fixture on October 16.

voice surfing - 13th beach boardriders
13th club in top four
13th Beach surfer Simon Collier on his way to the highest wave score of the day.
THIRTEENTH Beach Boardriders earned a credible 3rd at the Victorian Teams Titles. Phillip Island Boardriders eventually overcame Torquay in a tight battle at Jan Juc. Held in great 3ft waves with a strong offshore wind, there were big performances from all clubs, the winner not decided until the final round with heavyweight rivals Torquay and Phillip Island,
Peninsula and 13th Beach all making it to the finals. The final round was a close fought battle, with the lead changing multiple times. With the final margin between first and second only 2 points, Phillip Island claimed the win with Torquay coming in second. Placing in a close third was 13th Beach Boardriders who lead at several points during the final
round, and in fourth was Peninsula Surf Riders. 13th Beach surfer Simon Collier had the highest wave score of the day netting a 9 point ride in his final heat for a series of high performance critical snaps on the wave. Unfortunantly for Collier, he was marked with an interference later in the heat, preventing him from taking out first position in his heat.

Swells up for 13th fourth club comp THE “Hole” played host to 13th Beach Boardriders for the fourth Comp of the 2010 season with this comp supported by APCO Barwon Heads. With a very clean 2 to 3 foot rip bank running right and left at the bottom of the second car park steps, the wind off shore and the sun shining things were looking very positive. The break tended to favour the goofy footers with the left hander being the wave of choice for most of the day, offering a long wall and a short barrel section to those lucky enough to find it. Fortunately the conditions held throughout the day and from the Groms to the Masters, every competitor was amped to have such great waves for a comp and made the most of the very ripable waves on offer. The Under 13’s continue to improve and impress and with their go for it attitude and attack and in an epic final Billy Harrison took the points from Bronson Field, older brother Tom Harrison and Henry Hutchins in fourth. With Sapphire Main in NSW representing the State, the Junior Girls final was
wide open and in a close tussle Jemima Hutchins just edged out Paige and Cassie Vincent. In the Cadet Division goofy footer Austin Haire narrowly out scored Myles Fletcher with Bronson Field and Tom Harrison taking the minor places. In a very exciting and close Junior Men’s final Banjo Harfield surfed powerfully on his forehand to defeat little brother Gus with Willis Harrington third and Ethan Harbison fourth. The Masters saw an inform Andrew “Slim” Grimauld sneak home to defeat Grant Hutchins, Dick Field and Shane Vincent. In his first year in the senior Men’s Division, Shawn Todd edged out an in form Cam Lamperd, with Grant Stringer third and Shane Eagles fourth. For the first time in many years, the Open Women’s Division is wide open with any one of three or four of the competitors in with a chance of winning the main prize at the end of the year. Comp 4 went down to the wire with Tess just out pointing Ash Ward and Pip Cornes with Lizzy Ryan fourth.
Open B saw youngster Myles Fletcher take on the older guys, and in a very solid, fluid performance the young goofy edged out Nic Stephens, Toby Lee and Dick Field in a very high standard final. As has become customary, the Open A final blew everybody away with an awesome performance of power surfing. Ben Collier looked to have the points on the board when he snagged and emerged from a long right hand barrel, only to be piped on the hooter by older brother Simon who went left and continually bashed the lip with controlled power all the way to the shore. Third was Shawn Todd and fourth Michael Vander Klooster. The Teams Titles event was held on September 4th (see above). Members travelled up the coast to cheer the 13th team as they took on the state’s best boardriding clubs in a tag team event. The next club event will be October 9th. Members should check out the website at www.13thbeachboardriders. com for a full wrap and photos from comp 4. Gaz

voice surfing - soul longboards
Myles Fletcher.
Wild and windy day for SOUL SOUL Longboard club held its August club day at Ocean Grove with a big 1.5 to 2 metre swell and a 30-plus knot wild Westerly wind blowing across the wave faces. It was back to running the new format for this comp after having run the club championships the previous 2 months. With the 40 odd names drawn out, the first of the five man qualifying heats hit the water. The first few heats had the biggest of the swell for the day with the tide being highest by about the 3rd heat.
The swell and the wind remained full on for the whole day and by the time the finals came to a close there were some good left and right banks working. The conditions took their toll on most of the surfers with some tired and weary bodies choosing not to paddle out in their final. The club headed off to Kennett River for a social weekend last weekend before its next club day on the 18th of September.

THE boys treated the travelling Cobra supporters who ventured out to Lara with a tremendous performance of which they should be proud. A fine day and dry ground allowed us to showcase our skills and teamwork which after quarter time overwhelmed our opponents. Nick Anastassious and Luke Bastiaan were fantastic marking targets, Nick kicked 5 goals and Luke 3. Christian West was always dangerous with the ball in his hands and kicked 4 goals, including a checkside from the boundary Eddie Betts would have been proud of. Josh Kehagias kickstarted us with 2 telling first quarter goals and Zaine Cordy, a deserving best on ground medal winner also kicked 2 goals alternating between centre half forward and the midfield. Jed Evans and Nat Gravener put the icing on the cake with last quarter goals. Down back our reliable back six stood firm with Brayden Warren, Ned Holland and Nick Murphy positioning themselves

beautifully to often mark unopposed. We had drive all day off both wings from our speedsters Josh Prendergast and Zac Ramsey. Our midfield general Matt Caldow played his usual disciplined game and James Stirling was the Stirlo we rely on every week, giving 110% effort into every contest. But on the day to have such a comprehensive victory every boy contributed to the win, as was the case every week. The boys should be congratulated on how they represented themselves and their club all day long. Congratulations to Mohry and Charlie for going back to back. Two finer blokes to educate our boys on football you could not find, and our boys will be better footballers as they progress from being under their guidance. Finally thanks to Bernie Dynes for stepping into the runners role for the day. Apparently he enjoyed it so much he managed to miss the bus back and almost had to run back to Ocean Grove to begin the celebrations.

Captain an all-rounder MEET Ocean Grove’s newest Surf Life Saving Club captain and operations manager – Fontaine Portelli, writes Mark Heenan. She is street-wise, strategic, smart, she can swim and most importantly she can save lives in the surf. Fontaine, 21, was announced as the new captain at the club’s Annual General Meeting on July 25. She takes over from seasoned Ocean Grove SLSC veteran Matthew Burke, who won the prestigious Victorian Lifesaver of the Year award - The John Wishart Memorial Medal in August. The former Sacred Heart College student had been groomed for the role for some time after Burke approached her last summer to take on the club’s vice-captaincy role. “I was definitely under the impression that I had big shoes to fill,” Fontaine described. “Matthew (Burke) had done so much with the role and he had taken on the role two years prior to me – he was really well organised with what he had to do. “It was a little bit daunting (at first), to take on such a big role.” The Portelli family is a synonymous name when it comes to the Ocean Grove SLSC, Fontaine’s father Michael has worked as a Surf Life Saving coach at the club. “I started with Ocean Grove SLSC as a nipper in the Under 7’s, my dad had been a coach at the club before then and he

had been at Bancoora SLSC,” Fontaine said. “I came up through nippers, did my surf rescue certificate, my bronze medallion and then started patrolling at age 15 and I did that and thoroughly enjoyed it.” The well organised Ocean Grove local said a huge amount of planning goes into the role before the summer patrol starts at the Ocean Grove surf beach in December. In fact Fontaine currently spends more than 10 hours a week in the voluntary role, devising rosters, organising for life saving equipment to be inspected,
making sure club personnel are up to speed with their surf requalification awards, in addition to other administration duties. “From the work I did with Matthew Burke last season as vice-captain I actually found the majority of the work is done before the season starts,” she said. “So basically come December when patrol starts your job gets a lot easier. “So last year when Burkey said to me ‘Once the patrol is done when the season starts you just need to make sure they (surf patrol lifeguards) are running smoothly.’” Outside of her busy Ocean

Kane Montgomery.
OCEAN Grove reserves playing coach Kane Montgomery received the perfect birthday gift last week winning his second Cole Medal Bellarine Football League award, writes Mark Heenan. Montgomery who turned 31 on September 4, also won the coveted award at the 2009 League Best and Fairest count. The five-time Grubbers senior premiership player won the award with 18 votes, two votes ahead of Portarlington’s Dylan Morton (16) and thirdplaced Dale Ringin from Modewarre. “It is nice to know that some people and your peers think you can still play,” said Montgomery, who missed three Reserves games in 2010. “While it is an individual honour it is about developing and bringing through the younger players at the club.” Youngster Sam Rankin finished with eight votes, while former Leopold
GFL player and Grubber veteran Cameron Spolding collected seven votes at the League Best and Fairest awards held at Buckley’s Entertainment Centre in Breakwater. In the BFL Seniors League vote count, Modewarre’s Josh Finch took out the prestigious Les Ash Medal with 18 votes finishing ahead of Brent Christie from Torquay. Meanwhile, 2010 boom recruit Bernie Lynch was the top Ocean Grove vote getter finishing in equal third position with 15 votes along with Jeremy Power from Barwon Heads. Incidentally Lynch, Ex North Shore GFL playing coach, was the runaway leader mid-season accumulating all of his 15 votes by Round 11. Ocean Grove captain James Dalton, who won the Les Ash Medal award in 2006, was the next best Grubber and ended up with 13 votes.
“Yes Cameron has been endorsed as the coach for the next two seasons,” Ocean Grove Football Club president Geoff Cunningham said. “We were very happy with the progress Cameron made this season with the
youngsters. “We have had vision of a three-year plan since the end of last season.” Ocean Grove has missed only two BFL finals seniors’ campaigns in 19 years, five years ago in 2005 and this season.
Grubbers making early moves FIRST year Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor has put pen to paper to stay on for another two years at the Grubbers. McGregor was offered a contract extension by the club in mid-season to
take on the reigns in 2011 and 2012. “It is excellent – there is a self belief that we are on the right track,” McGregor said. “We have a system within the club to develop our youth.”
The former Hampton Rovers VAFA (Victorian Amateur Football Association) player said he did not feel added pressure despite the sixth-placed Grubbers missing out on this year’s BFL Finals.
Jack on board
Early recruit: Shane Jack.
GRUBBERS have wasted no time in signing up its newest recruit for the 2011 season, Geelong West St Peters forward Shane Jack. Jack who spent seven years at the Roosters in the Geelong Football League, joins current Ocean Grove midfielder Rowan O'Callaghan as one of two playing assistant coaches. The Hamlyn Heights based resident has signed on at Ocean Grove for the next two seasons. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor said Jack's valuable footy knowledge and GFL experience will benefit the playing group enormously. “Shane is a fantastic bloke,” he said. “He will add strength, experience, football smarts and leadership skills to our list.”

Treble chance OCEAN Grove goes in search of an unique premiership treble in this weekend's Bellarine Football League Under 18 Grand Final. The young Grubbers now face ladder leaders Drysdale in the league decider at Spring Creek Reserve in Torquay on Saturday. Ocean Grove, who won Under 18's premierships in 2008 and 2009, secured a BFL Grand Final berth after a gutsy nine-point win against Geelong Amateur in last Saturday's preliminary final at Drysdale. The Hawks have beaten the Grubbers on both occasions in 2010, in Round one Drysdale won by 32 points although it was a much closer contest in Round 10 - The Hawks defeating Ocean
Grove by only 13 points. The Grubbers' five-goal second quarter blitz helped seal the match against the Ammos after Ocean Grove trailed by 10 points at the first break in the wet and slippery conditions at the Drysdale Recreation Reserve. Final scores were Ocean Grove 9.9.63 to Geelong Amateur 8.6.54. “It was touch and go (close) for a fair bit of the game," Ocean Grove Under 18 co-coach Matt Tyrrell said after the match. “We managed to kick away with a few goals in the second
quarter." Best afield James Bennett, the dynamic Patrick Maloney, Tom Lundberg and goalsneak Aaron Hapgood all kicked two goals apiece for the Grubbers. A large gathering of supporters, family and friends from Ocean Grove will head down to Torquay on Saturday to watch young Grubs do battle against the Hawks. Match starts at 9:15am on Saturday September 11 at Spring Creek Reserve. In other news, Geelong Amateur will meet Drysdale in the BFL Grand Final after the Hawks defeated Queenscliff by 34 points on Saturday, while Geelong Amateur tackle Torquay
