LIFESAVERS THE local Rotary run market has kickstarted a campaign to improve Ocean Grove’s ambulance service - and take its lifesaving abilities to the next level. Ocean Grove Rotary donated $1,700 to the Ocean Grove ambulance station in January as part of their monthly market gold coin entry collections. Team manager of the Ocean Grove Ambulance

Station, Ian Russell said the donation has started an ongoing fundraising campaign to help update the station’s existing cardiac defibrillators. “Rotary have always been great to us and the generosity of the people who attend the market has been fantastic,” Ian said.

Ocean Grove’s defibrillators currently have 12 lead ECG systems that attach to a patient’s body and allow paramedics to monitor their heart. One of their two vehicles is able to then transmit information through to Geelong Hospital via Bluetooth before the patient arrives, reducing or removing the time spent in the Emergency Department.

The current system then requires paramedics to assess other aspects of the patient’s condition like blood pressure and blood oxygen concentration, manually. Ian hopes to raise the $36,000 required to install fully automatic systems into both vehicles that would eliminate the need to have four different machines in use. “Having the ability to monitor electronically on a moving platform makes it safer for officers and gives us electronic accuracy,” he said. Ian said in cases where the patient needs to be placed in an induced coma, an automatic, electronic system improves the accuracy of their treatment even further. “In order to do that we need to be able to monitor them electronically. It’s very important we have accurate figures,” he said. “All of that is designed to give the best possible outcome for the people we are treating,”

Ian stresses the ambulance service in Ocean Grove is operating successfully with the current manual system in place. “We’re still operating well with skilled personnel who do a great job, this will just bring us up to the next level of care,” he said. “Government funds us to a degree but an upgrade like this is usually done on a branch by branch basis via community donations and fundraising.” The Ocean Grove Ambulance service is hoping to work with Rotary and local community groups to try and raise the funds over 2011. “Any businesses in Ocean Grove who are interested in donating to get us to the level that we would need is appreciated,” said Ian. Community benefit from local market OCEAN Grove market-goers have helped raise more than $4000 for local community groups. Rotary Club of Ocean Grove manages the market and collects a gold coin donation at the gate which is then given to local charities. Rotary spokeswoman, Heather Wallace said since the current

market season started on October 4 they have given to several local charities including Rainbow Riders, Bellarine Police Community Support Register and Ocean Grove ambulance service. “Whatever we collect on the day goes directly to the nominated charity,” said Heather.

Last Sunday’s market raised money for Victorian Flood victims with more than $1200 collected at the gate despite the wet and windy weather. The Ocean Grove Community Market is held on the first Sunday of the month at Kingston Park. The next one is on Sunday March 6.

TWO local footy stars helped to represent Australia in the lesser known sport of Gridiron. 17 year old Matthew Bean and younger brother Thomas, 15, were chosen to compete in the under 19s Samoa Bowl VIII held over New Year’s in American Samoa. The St Joseph’s College students have played for the Bay City Buccaneers, Geelong’s team in the Victorian gridiron league, for about two years. They are also members of the Victorian State gridiron team and compete in interstate competitions. In late 2010 the boys were lucky enough to be invited to the Future Stars program, which feeds into the Australian All Stars team and gives young players the chance to compete overseas. “We were emailed and it said we were invited into the Future Stars Australia Squad and we would be going to American Samoa,” said Matt. The boys travelled to the Pacific Territory on December 27 and said they were greeted by the American Samoan players, locals and even the Governor, Togiola Tulafono. “As soon as we got there the Samoans made us feel welcome, they were waiting for us when we got off the plane,” Matt

said. The team was only on the island for less than a week but were training twice a day before the game to get used to the 40 degree heat. Tom said it took the intensive training to get used to working with their new team mates. “We had to train twice a day even though it was hot, to get used to it,” said Tom. “The heat was really humid, almost 100% humidity.” Unfortunately Australia was defeated 35-0 however the players managed to prevent the competition from scoring in the second half, a feat in itself. The boy’s father, Andrew, said American Samoa is known as the ‘Gridiron Island’ as many professional players in the American National Football League are recruited from there.

“Players from the island have over fifty times more chance of making the NFL than Americans,” Andrew said. “It was good experience ‘cos they’re one of the best countries of NFL,” said Tom. Both Matt and Tom play Aussie rules and soccer as well as gridiron but Matt said the crossover from the different codes of footy isn’t too difficult. “It’s not that different but you have to be more aggressive, you’ve got to think more ‘cos its small, confined like one on one stuff rather than a big field of everyone doing stuff at the same time,” Matt said. Matt said gridiron is becoming more popular in Australia thanks to ads on Channel Ten’s sport channel One, and the telecasting of the NFL’s grand final, Super Bowl. “We’ve had like four

teams join up recently and there were about 42 people at training last night which is way more than usual,” he said. Matt is completing his VCE this year and is hoping to be accepted to an American College on a football scholarship. “From Australia it’s more difficult, making a college team would be hard, you have to be pretty good but you can always try,” he said. The boys were born in America which would make going to an American College easier than Australian born gridiron players. “I was born in Stamford Hospital so Stamford Uni would be the dream,” Matt said. For anyone interested in playing or receiving more information about playing Gridiron should visit www.gridironvictoria. com.au

quick news Duck sale THE mass of yellow ducks will be back diving from the Ozone Road Jetty and racing towards the brand new Barwon Heads bridge in March as part of the 2011 Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea. During the weekend of March 19-20, organisers are hoping for a bigger event than the last years’ 10th anniversary. More than one thousand ducks were sold last year with hopes that figure will rise with almost $5,000 worth of prizes on offer. The 2011 Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea promises a great weekend for all the family. With a focus on celebrating arts and the environment, the festival promises a range of events including an art show, the Sea Change quilters exhibition, live music, food, environmental displays, craft and produce as well as the famous duck race. Festival president Rick Web said “with a decade of festivals under our belt this year we are going all-out this year to make this Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea the best ever”. The big day of the festival is Sunday March 21 and will include tai chi on the beach, Arts Alfresco featuring local artists, a produce and craft market, Kids Zone including an animal farm, jumping castle and face painting, camel rides on the beach, sustainable living stalls, food stalls, music on two stages and of course the duck race. Ducks will be dropped from the Ozone Jetty at 3pm and the owner of the duck that arrives first at the jetty wins a $2500 travel voucher. Ducks will be on sale right up until the festival for just $10 each with all proceeds going towards keeping the festival a free family event. Look out for the “DUCKS ON SALE HERE” signs around town. quick news Pub to pub this month

Ocean Grove Football Netball Club rooms have been gutted for a refurbishment which will feature a new kitchen and change in layout.

Shocking bill sparks warning

SHOCKING BILL: Ian Russell is warning other businesses to check their electricity bills after he received one that was three times the correct sum.

AN Ocean Grove business owner has warned fellow traders to double check their utility bills after he worked it out that Origin had misread his meter to the tune of more than $3,500. What is worse, Ian Russell who owns Coastal Cutz in The Parade, said that when he initially approached the electricity provider to question his continually increasing bills he was told that he would have to investigate at his own cost. He did this but Origin still refused to listen.

“My bills have progressively increased and I’ve been ringing Origin to ask them questions about them. And every time I ring them they tell me it’s my problem and that I need to get an electrician in to deal with it,” said Ian. “ So I’ve been paying an electrician who’s been coming in here, checking appliances, switchboards, checking the lights, checking everything we’ve got here. He’s been saying to me look there doesn’t seem to be an issue. This has all cost me

money. “And when I ring Origin they just say, ‘well you know it’s not going to be our problem and if we get someone in to look at it, it will cost you $300.’” “So when it skyrocketed and my bill is now $4,407, for three months, up from $597 I rang them again and started to ask questions again. Once again they said it was my fault and once again I got an electrician in. Finally Ian and the electrician were able to work out just how Origin managed to get it so

wrong. “Between the electrician and myself we worked out what was going on – that they’ve been reading the meter incorrectly. “What they’ve done on this bill is they’ve put in the peak number. There are only three numbers. There is total, a peak and an off peak. And we’ve been charged at the peak.” A business upstairs from Ian has also received a bill for an incorrect reading, a matter which is being investigated separately. “One of my issues is I’m out of pocket based on the fact that I’ve had to get people in here. “I’d like everyone to know that these companies can basically do you damage. “I can’t afford $4,000 in electricity bills every four months. You just can’t afford that. “When I realised the guy upstairs had the same problem I wondered how many other people have the same problem. Origin was contacted about the issue but had not replied when the Voice went to press. Have you had a similar experience? Contact news@oceangrovevoice. com.

THE famous Ocean Grove Harriers Pub to Pub run will take place later this month. The 7km beach run starts at the Barwon Heads ‘pub’ and finishes at the Collendina ‘pub’. Those taking part usually have dinner at the Ocean Grove Hotel after the event is completed. The run is on Friday February 18 at 6pm. It starts at the park diagonally opposite the Barwon Heads Hotel.

over the Christmas, New Year’s period; it seemed to be worse on busy days when it would overflow.” The employee said she contacted the plaza’s property manager four times during December asking to have the problem fixed. She said she was told it could not be done immediately because of the holiday period. “It got so bad I actually threatened to call the EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) because it was a real OH&S problem,” she said. Nova Phones owner Dimitri Halkidis said he had customers complaining.

SUMMER STINK: Traders complained several times before the sewer pit was fixed.

“I had one customer complain about it; he mentioned he had already reported it to council and was going to report it to health services,” he said. Mr Halkidis said he thought the leak had affected businesses as customers were reluctant to park in the basement. “Over Christmas break was probably the worst time it could have

happened, the car park was full and with the heat the smell was pretty bad.” Knight Frank senior commercial property manager Luke Hunter said they were informed of the smell by plaza tenants and soon after their maintenance contractor found the sewer pit was at a high level. “The pit was pumped

and disposed of manually and it was discovered the valves for the pumps had become tangled and the pumps were not operating as they should,” Mr Hunter said. “The system is now operational and regular inspections of the pit are occurring and will continue until we are satisfied the problem has been fixed.”

SHOPPERS and traders were exposed to smelly conditions over the holidays thanks to an overflowing sewer pit in Ocean Plaza. Employees in the centre reported sewage leaking from the basement car park into the plaza over Christmas and new year. An employee of the plaza, who did not wish to be named, said she witnessed sewage leaking from the floor in the south-west corner of the car park on several occasions. “It’s been on and off since the plaza first opened but especially over the last three or four months,” she said. “It became especially bad

With amazing support from individuals, families and business in the local area, The Salvation Army has been able to extend care to members of the community who experienced difficulty or hardship at Christmas time. Christmas is our busiest time with more than double the number of people seeking our help in December compared to

any other month of the year. We want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone that made a donation to our Christmas Appeal and donated gifts for Christmas. With support from the community we were able to brighten Christmas Day for many families who had experienced a hard year. The Salvation Army Bellarine Peninsula assisted more than 80 individuals and families in the lead up to Christmas with the provision of food vouchers and parcels, toys and gifts to people in need.

We were delighted to see so many members of our community drop into our Ocean Grove Op Shop to make a donation to help us extend care to others. We’d also like to say a big thank you to our employees and the many volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes. There are so many caring people in our community and we are encouraged by the number of people thinking about others at Christmas time. The Salvation Army Bellarine

FOR SALE: Real Estate Agent Tom Butters during the four-block auction of land between Orton and Dare streets.

Prime views on virgin land ONE of the largest never developed parcels of land in the centre of Ocean Grove went to auction last month. Actually four adjoining blocks, the land abutting Orton and Dare Street had been in the hands of the same family as long as anyone could

‘A footy kick from the beach’ remember and apart from being dutifully mowed by the owner, it remained untouched prime real estate. “Just a kick of the footy from the beach,” Haydens auctioneer Tom Butters told a crowd of about 140

mainly onlookers who turned out for a sticky beak. It was quite appropriate that Tom was the auctioneer. The son of one of the town’s most famous real estate agents, Tom was brought up at

160 Orton Street. The result of the auction was that two of the blocks were sold and two were passed in. The latter two blocks remain on the market. Number 139, which is 898 sqm, was sold after

the auction for $650,000 and number 137, itself 769 sqm went for $605,000. Tom, who auctioned all four blocks consecutively in temperatures hovering around the mid 30s, said afterwards that it was a tough auction in a tough market.

Floods wreak havoc

OCEAN Grove may be as far south as you can get from Queensland but it still shared in the effects of the phenomenal Cyclone Yasi. According to the Ocean Grove Fire Brigade figures, 51.6mm was dumped on the town on Friday February 4. At it’s most intense the day still didn’t produce the record rainfall in one hour. In the short time the brigade has had its new weather station it had previously recorded 26.4mm in just 60 minutes on October 6 last year. However, the impact was still significant. Power went down in most areas of the town for about an hour in the afternoon. Several roads from the river to Collendina quickly become treacherous to pass and a number of town centre shops were flooded, mainly due to roof leaks. Some gardens had cascading water running through them and the force of the water running into The Terrace even lifted off a heavy concrete cover. Across the bridge at Barwon Heads the deluge brought back old memories when the high street was completely inundated.

Expat in UK pension push BRITISH expatriates living in Ocean Grove are taking part in an on-going protest against the British Government’s old-age pension rules. Currently British expats living in Australia aren’t subject to yearly increases on their old-age pensions meaning once they leave the United Kingdom, their pension rates are frozen. The rate at which it’s frozen depends on when people came to Australia, how long they worked in the UK and how much they contributed to the British Government’s National Insurance scheme. Australia is one of only seven nations worldwide, including Canada, that doesn’t have bilateral social security agreements with the UK and therefore doesn’t receive indexed pensions for its British expats. British pensioners living in 47 other nations including the European Economic Area, the United States and Turkey are eligible for yearly increases.

Walter (Wally) Gee was a member of the British Army from 1955, serving in Malaya, Borneo and Germany and has lived in Australia since 1970. Wally is a member of the Ocean Grove RSL, working as a welfare officer. He helped contribute to a petition book of 100 expats presented to Pensions Minister, Steve Webb in London in December 2010 to protest against the current system. Wally joined others who said they were prepared to hand back their service medals to provoke change. He said that as a member of the British Pensioners in Australia (BPiA) he is representing expats from around the Bellarine. “I do it because I represent an awful lot of English ex-servicemen too, I have to look out for them,” he said. Having lived and worked in Australia for more than 10 years, Wally receives a full pension from the Australian government however he still receives £32.34

($A52) per week from the UK. “For a start it doesn’t really bother me because I don’t need the money but there are people who do need the money,” he said. Wally said if all expatriates were treated equally they wouldn’t be inclined to protest. “It’s a matter of morality, it’s a little bit unfair because with most

countries in the world they get it.” BPiA chairman Jim Tilley said veterans were outraged by the current system. “These British war veterans put their lives on the line for their country, paid into the mandatory UK National Insurance pension scheme and yet the British Government

is unwilling to support these heroic individuals by paying them an indexed pension once they move to some countries overseas,” Mr Tilley said. “It’s a social injustice propped up by legal niceties.” HAVE YOUR SAY

Take the bowls Challenge OCEAN Grove Bowling Club is getting set to run its hugely popular community bowls competition later this month. The event is open to local business and community groups and will be played on the Mondays of February 28, March 7, March 14, and March 21 from 6pm each night. Over the past 12 years this competition has proven very successful by providing a good night’s entertainment, giving players the opportunity to socialise with other members of the community and learn the game of lawn bowls. Teams consist of four players, (male, female or mixed) and can only have one experienced bowler. You may enter as many teams as you wish and you do not have to use the same players each week. It is desirable for teams to play on all four weeks of the competition. Prizes will be awarded each evening to winning teams and there will be a premier team at the end of the competition. This is a great opportunity for your business or group to have a fun time, so get in quickly as we they only accept 42 teams and entries are filling coming in fast. Entry forms are available from the club or you can contact John on 0407 096 811.

Ocean Grove Community Bowls series attracts locals from all walks of the community and business.

Busy new year for local Lions OCEAN Grove and Barwon Heads Lions club has had a very busy January including four wheelbarrow raffles and a pizza and carnival night for children from Cottage by the sea and more. “Australia Day saw two big events; our annual Kite Flying at

Ocean Grove beach and across the bridge at the carnival our annual day for the Wathaurong Community. “At Barwon Heads we saw about 170 of the Wathaurong people and although there we only 5 of us we were kept pretty busy; as were those 9 at the Kite

Flying,” said president Brenda Walter. They also held a quickly organised barbecue for flood relief at the Coles car-park. “As president of this club I am proud to be a Lion and proud of the tremendous work my fellow Lions do; for if it wasn’t for their

hard work and the generosity of the community in which we live we would not have been able to raise $16,800 for this appeal. “So to the local community, businesses, and holiday makers we say ‘thank you very much’,” Brenda said.

Neighbourhood Watch Ocean Grove Areas 39/43 FEBRUARY 2011 NEWSLETTER ONCE again we would like to sincerely thank Ocean Grove Voice for donating and publishing our Newsletter for Ocean Grove As of today’s date we do not have any Crime Statistics to report. We will update these as soon as we are supplied with the information required. Most of the holiday season is now over and we thank all residents for their patience with visitors during this time. It is unfortunate that there Powercor - 132 412 Australia Post - 13 13 18 Barwon Water 1300 565 007 VicRoads - 13 11 70

were quite a number of bicycles stolen from Caravan Parks during this time and we ask that all residents keep a look out for any that may have been left lying around. School Speed Zones are now applicable and we ask everyone to be aware and take notice of all signs around schools. It is very important, especially in the beginning of the year when new Prep age children are starting school and may not be up to date with the correct method

of crossing streets, that we are particularly observant. Crime prevention in the community is based mainly on the individual action of each member of the community and we seek your help to assist in lessoning the opportunities of crime occurring and as a community to observe and report to the police (or Crime Stoppers) any examples seen. As Neighbourhood Watch is no longer active in Ocean Grove, we are providing phone

numbers for people to contact should they have issues in the area. Thought for the month After the heavy rains we now have high temperatures and humidity. It is important that everyone (especially the elderly) take the necessary precautions and stay out of the heat. Make sure that cold water is easily accessible and that we all keep a watch out for our neighbours.

Street light faults. Damaged mailbox. Water leakage on street or footpath. Musos pull in $10k for flood relief THIRTY-six separate live music acts and an audience of hundreds helped raise a five figure sum for flood relief at the Ocean Grove Hotel on Saturday. Among the musicians who gave their time were Mojo Corner, Guthrie Pastiche, the Pirates of Scion, Skabang, Sweet Delores and Sarah Caroll. The event which also included activities for the kids and an auction was held from 12noon until midnight. Co-organiser Kevin Downey said: “It was a fantastic event, we raised in the order of $10,000. The support from all the local musicians and community was overwhelming. We had upwards of 300-400 people there. It was very, very busy. “ I would like to say a special thank you to Mojo Corner and all the other musicians who performed on the day.”

The Gift of a Wish Takes Off

“This is helicopter 941, requesting take off with precious cargo 84 year old Marjorie on board, about to have her wish come true to fly in a helicopter. Are we clear for takeoff? Marjorie, are you ready to fly…”

What’s on your wish list? How about flying in a helicopter, or venturing to the very edge of the Melbourne’s tall Eureka Tower? Perhaps it’s enjoying a relaxing lunch in the Dandenong Ranges with a panoramic view of the city? These gifts of wishes are part of a new program from TLC Aged Care called ‘Think, Live, Complete’, and the wishes are being granted to aged care residents across TLC’s nine residential aged care homes. The program literally ‘took off’ on Monday January 31, 2011 at 10am when Marjorie aged 84 took to the skies, thinking, living and completing her wish to fly in a helicopter. After hovering above her home at Forest Lodge in Frankston North, Marj returned to the ground with a smile from ear to ear. ‘Every resident should be given the opportunity to go in a helicopter. It was wonderful. Thank-you so much,’ she commented as she adjusted her Helicopter Group (Aust) hat. Many thanks go to the Helicopter Group (Aust) for donating their time, skill and of course helicopter to fulfil this inspiring dream. “We were inspired by Aged and Community Care Victoria (ACCV) who have been running a program known as ‘Be Inspired’,” explained TLC Aged Care CEO Ingrid Williams. “We’re taking the Make-a-Wish Foundation idea and extending it to a different generation to help

make wishes come true for residents in aged care,” she said.

Residents complete a Think Live Complete card to share their wish list of dreams and where possible, TLC Aged Care will help make them come true. A certificate is presented to celebrate the granting of that special wish. One TLC Aged Care resident wanted to visit Eureka Tower and venture out on ‘The Edge’. “The biggest problem in granting this wish was finding the team member brave enough to accompany her,” laughed Ingrid Williams. “Another resident simply wanted a relaxing and scrumptious lunch with a glorious view from the Dandenong Ranges,” she said. When Nellie McGrath, 91, from TLC Marina in Alton North, submitted her wish, ‘I would love to go on a cruise before I leave this earth’, the Lifestyle staff mentioned it to her family. On Saturday January 29th Nellie boarded the Princess Dawn with her two daughters and her granddaughter for a 13 day cruise to New Zealand. The last time Nellie was on a ship was 51 years ago when she migrated to Australia from Ireland. She was very much looking forward to the incredible scenery, meeting new people, playing games and eating lots of great food. With a smile on her face she quipped that she may even try her luck dipping her toes in the pool. We encourage our residents that whatever it is, no matter how small, no matter how challenging, they should dare to dream.

A journey on the Murray Neil Murray - one of Australia’s most original and respected singer songwriters - returned to play the Grove’s Piping Hot Chicken Shop on Sauturday night. “When I tell people I’m playing in a chicken shop it always gets a laugh. It has to be one of the quirkiest venues around, but I’ve done it a few times now and it works,” said Murray.

Drawing from a three decade career, Murray strung his audience along - in the best possible way - with his anecdotes, his song writing mastery and his music from the Aussie centre. Neil was accompanied by multi-instrumentalist John Bedggood on keys, accordian, fiddle and mandolin. Murray’s latest album Witness is available through ABC Music.

Nature’s flying rainbow THE very colourful Eastern Rosella is commonly seen around Ocean Grove. The name rosella comes from early settlers who regularly saw Eastern Rosellas near the Sydney suburb of Rose Hill and called the birds Rose Hillers which finally became rosellas. The Eastern Rosella is a medium-sized parrot which grows to about 30cm in length. It has a mixture of red, yellow, green, white and blue plumage. Both sexes have very similar markings, however the female is duller in colour. Young birds can be distinguished from adult birds because they have a yellow or orange bill, in contrast to an adult which has a white bill. They call with harsh screeches and whistles. The Eastern Rosella is found throughout south eastern Australia, from Queensland through to Tasmania. They have been introduced to New Zealand. It is found in the edges of forests, parks, gardens,

grasslands, and farmlands. They are commonly seen in Kingston Park, Woodlands Estate, and in the nature reserve. Their diet consists of seeds, fruits, flowers, nectar, and insects. They fossick for food in cleared areas on the ground and in trees in the early morning and late afternoon. They crack seeds or fruit open with their sharp beak and hold their food in one

foot and lift it to their beak to eat. Eastern Rosellas mate for life. They nest in tree hollows, usually in an eucalypt tree, where four to eight eggs are laid. The female incubates the eggs for up to 21 days, while the male feeds her. The female feeds the chicks at first, but when they are two weeks old both parents feed them. The chicks are ready to

fly in five to six weeks. A few weeks ago I wrote an article about birds in Lake Connewarre and the Barwon River. I called for interested people to help me campaign to stop duck shooting in Lake Connewarre, as it is a Ramsar Protected area of international significance. The response was underwhelming (nobody responded), but I was heartened to read that

Play It Safe By The Water Barwon Coast provides Beach Safety Signs at beach access pathways along the coast around Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove & 13th Beach. These signs provide a great deal of detail regarding the likely predominant beach conditions and also indicate where the nearest patrolled beaches are in peak summer. Always swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove and 13th Beach where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol. At Ocean Grove and 13th Beach patrols at weekends continue until Easter whilst daily patrols continue at Ocean Grove until mid February. The Barwon Coast funded Life Guard patrols at 18W on the Ocean Grove Spit finished at the end of January Free Shuttle Bus We hope you made good use of the free shuttle bus that ran over peak summer co-ordinated by Barwon Coast with financial support from Coles, City of Greater Geelong, the Echo, Press Here and the local business associations in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is in your sight and can be controlled by voice command. If your dog does not respond to your voice then it is not under effective control. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Do The Right Thing - Use The Right Bin Whether its food packaging, plastic bags, cigarette butts, dog poo or syringes, litter is one of the most visible signs of pollution. At Barwon Coast we have made a substantial investment in locating recycling and general waste bins throughout our coastal reserves and caravan parks however our recycling programs and waste collection is only effective if used correctly. Bins with yellow lids are for recycling of appropriate materials only. Unfortunately these bins are sometimes contaminated with items that should be placed in the general waste bins and in such cases all that bins contents have to go to the tip. The biggest contaminant in recycling bins are the PLASTIC BAGS some people use to carry their recycling to the bin but then unfortunately put the bag in the bin Next time you put out your recycling, remember to make sure there are no plastic bags in the recycling bin. Plastic bags can be recycled at most supermarkets. Let’s 'Do The Right Thing and Use The Right Bins”. 13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast has just released a draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists. Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC. Details are available on our web site www.barwoncoast.com.au We are looking for submissions regarding this proposal by 11th February 2011. CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST CoastalTender open on 31 January, 2011 Corangamite CMA is calling private landholders, local councils, foreshore management committees and Parks Victoria to tender for funding to undertake works managing native vegetation on our coast. CoastalTender is an Australian Government funded Corangamite CMA coastal management program supporting land managers to conserve native coastal vegetation. The $1.8 million funding available is for the conservation and revegetation on properties larger than one hectare along the Corangamite coast and areas surrounding the Port Phillip Bay and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar sites. Properties along estuaries are also eligible. Land managers who formally express interest receive an obligation-free site assessment, and a draft management plan. The plan includes • a vegetation assessment • advice on management options. Following this, the land manager can submit a tender nominating a bid price in order to undertake the management actions outlined in the plan. Tenders enter a competitive bid process and successful tenders enter a five-year agreement. Land managers can also opt to include long-term protection commitments in their agreement, which will improve their competitiveness. Under these agreements, the land manager will receive financial incentive payments. Only actions in addition to current responsibilities under existing arrangements and legislation are eligible for support.

I HAVE lived in Ocean Grove for about four years, moving across the bridge from Barwon Heads. I grew up in Geelong where I attended The Geelong College. Our weekends consisted of hitching down here to surf and camping in the dunes. These early memories I hold fondly and are the reason why I ended up here. Before I moved down the coast I spent twenty years as a professional musician based in Melbourne. Specialising in jazz on the Hammond organ gave me the opportunity to play and tour with some pretty amazing musicians! Some people I have either toured or recorded with include: Ernest Ranglin (Jamaica) Betty Harris (USA), Bunny Ruggs (Jamaica) Cattletruck, Swinging Sidewalks, Paul Williamsons Hammond Combo (Aria nomination), Festa, Banana Oil (Aria Award), Renee Geyer, Jim Kelly, Bobby Previte (USA), John Butler, Guy Pearce, Duke Robillard (USA), Chris Wilson, Ross Wilson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds (USA) James Taylor (UK), Wendy Saddington, Jeff Lang,

The Eric Bana Show Live house band The best thing about Ocean Grove is the state of art and music down this way. It is fantastic to observe our own Piping Hot Chicken Shop transform into a hip little venue, or the splattering of open mic sessions like Jon Willard’s long-running B.U.M.S* open mic night now at Nectar on Mondays. It would, however, be great to see more appreciation for original content and diversity. There is so much talent around it seems remiss that it not be duly recognised. If I could open a shop here it would have to be a cafe/gallery/ bookshop/live venue all in one! One day ... Living in a community such as this you tend to get drawn to like-minded people and for me the gigs, rehearsals, benefits and stuff with kids is where it’s at. My first gig as a 14 year old was playing organ in the foyer at GPAC. One day an elderly fellow came

up to me and said: “If people invested in, and supported, art and music, culture would take care of itself.” These words have stayed with me ever since and I am always looking for ways to support this idea. I divide my time nowadays between teaching a TAFE jazz course at Diversitat, gigs around the country, and hanging with my family. I am fortunate to live a life where my passions are intertwined with my career, although I am yet to work out a way to play Hammond organ while riding my mal! The future of Ocean Grove is at the mercy of many elements. It seems that more and more farms are being developed into housing and I hope the powers that be are educated enough to make sensible decisions on our future. If I were mayor of Ocean Grove the first thing I would do is ban cars down the main street and turn the old Westpac bank into a cafe/gallery/ bookshop/live venue. Then I would make John Bowman mayor!

business

Change is afoot LIFESTYLE business Daisy & THE DUKE opened just before Christmas and has brought something new and exciting to the Bellarine Peninsula. The Ocean Grove shop is locally owned and run by long-term residents Virginia Johnson and Janice Kilfoyle. It boasts an eclectic range of products such as clothes, furniture, homewares, gifts, accessories and children’s toys. Janice and Virginia are focusing on recycled, fair trade, eco-friendly and Australian made goods, and hope to support local artisans and handmade goods. “The store will be constantly evolving, as we introduce new and exciting ranges which have not been available in the area until now, Virginia said. Virginia has had experience on the Bellarine Peninsula, in Geelong and interstate in hospitality, clothing and jewellery. Jan has worked throughout the region and her interests in wellbeing led to qualifications and accreditation in massage therapy. “We have a wealth of experience in retail, design and marketing, and previously teamed together to produce sun smart garments for children. Janice said. Virginia said the shop was well-suited to the town. “We have chosen Ocean Grove for our business because we enjoy the

victims and the family Fun Day for Cancer Council of Victoria.

Pair create with care IT IS a new beginning for Queenscliff kindergarten assistant, Julia Patten and nurse Bianca Mills as they join forces to produce hand-made goods from recycled and vintageinspired fabrics. Julia and Bianca are both mothers and have found themselves frustrated with the array of massproduced toys and clothing available for themselves and their children. “We are all conscious now about the environmental impact of importing goods over long distances and using new resources to make toys and clothes which are often seen as disposable rather than precious life-long items, Bianca said. The women, from Point Lonsdale and Ocean Grove, have decided to combine their concern for the environment with their own creative interests. The range is all locally-made using recycled or vintageinspired fabrics and everything is unique or part of only a small release. For details visit theappleyard.bigcartel. com

Effective treatment for muscular pain! Gianna and Ron use Bowen and Remedial massage combined with kinesiology to identify and effectively treat many musculoskeletal conditions such as: - lower back pain - tennis elbow - knee pain - migraines - sporting injuries

BLUE BONANZA: Above Sophie, Julie and Holly, and below, Summer, Bec, Amali, Matilda and Makara.

- shoulder restrictions - headaches - neck restriction - clicking jaw - and many more

LONG lines and smiling faces are testament to the enduring success of the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Lions Club Australia Day kite flying event. A perfect breeze and a rare sunny day also helped make the free event a heap of fun for all those involved. Some kite fliers brought their own but most of the kites were made, with the help of Lions volunteers, by the children themselves. Amazing how such a simple invention can still prove such a big draw card in these days when we are immersed by gadgets and technology.

To resolve most general musculoskeletal conditions requires only two or three treatments, though many people like to have regular treatments to stay healthy. “Our aim is to get you pain free and healthy in the quickest time possible. You can contact Gianna or Ron at the Ocean Grove Soft Tissue Therapy Clinic 20 Bonnyvale Rd. Ocean Grove. Ph 52555229

Above and below, bowling action from Cobras C Grade against Portarlington.

Second century for Cam

A Grade: The highly anticipated contest between Collendina and Jan Juc got off to an impressive start on the weekend, with both sides splitting the points on a day where conditions made life difficult for batsmen and bowlers alike, at Collendina Recreation Reserve. Jan Juc who sit on the precipice of missing out on a finals berth needed to make runs after they were sent in by the Cobras captain. After their 73.1 overs Jan Juc found themselves at the competitive total of all out for 142. The enigmatic Michael Fabris was again the pick of the bowlers taking 4/17 off 19 overs whilst young guns Corey Walter and Jay Hearps took 3 and 2 wickets

respectively to give the batsmen an easier chase this weekend. B Grade: For the second time in three matches Collendina opener Cameron Kavailinus was the hero, recording 119 for the visitors to help them set a monster 278 all out at Jan Juc Recreational Reserve last Saturday. Jan Juc would have been confident of holding the Cobras to a small total after an indifferent year with the bat, but Kavailinus had other ideas. His scintillating century set a brilliant base for the rest of the innings with fellow opener Blair Hodgkinson and number three Nicholas Rankin chipping in with 38 and 28 respectively.

With the last placed Jan Juc playing for only pride, and the 8th placed Cobras pushing for an unlikely finals berth, the gap between the two teams was evident from the outset. After being smashed around the park for the majority of the day, the home side were then sent in for a dangerous 16 over period which they scraped through only losing the one wicket for 27 runs. Jan Juc will continue their uphill battle this Saturday at Jan Juc Recreational Reserve C Grade: Collendina #1 were at home to Anglesea on Saturday in a must win fixture for both clubs. The Cobras won the toss and

elected to bat first, which in hindsight wasn’t a great move. After sending themselves in, the Cobras were restricted to all out for 123 off 56 overs. Top scores for the home side were Chris Pitfield with 26 and opener Ashley Denneman who kicked off the innings well with a solid 24. With just three wins between the two sides for the season, this fixture is a must win for pride and momentum heading into next season. Anglesea will aim to chase down the Cobras meagre total at Connewarre this Saturday afternoon. By Daniel Carty

Knights in our realm OCEAN Grove Football Club started off its 2011 season with a VIP coach taking charge of a Tuesday night training session. The first senior on-field training of 2011 was held at Collendina Caravan Park football ground with ex-Essendon coach Matthew Knights putting the boys through their paces. 43 players from the senior group attended the session on January 25 to be told they were going to be trained by Knights.

“The blokes were really excited when they found out,” senior coach Cameron McGregor said. “We could see as coaches that the boys stepped up and (Knights) was very responsive to the way the boys trained.” Knights regularly holidays at the Collendina Caravan Park and after talking to a club committee member over the summer period, offered his services for a training session. Player Ben Van Deuren

said the players were pumped when they found out they were going to experience working with an AFL coach. “It was great, he was training in amongst it and running our drills with us,” he said. Club president Geoff Cunningham said the club felt privileged to have someone as knowledgeable as Knights run a training session. “It’s good for a local club to have the opportunity

to have someone with experience like that to come in and take a session,” he said. The Grubbers placed sixth in 2010 and have high hopes for their 2011 season having retained all current players as well as gaining 10 new recruits. Cameron said the

players were expecting to finish in the top three this season. “With nine or 10 new players we’d be a bit disappointed not to make finals this year,” he said. Ocean Grove will play Portarlington on April 9 at Portarlington Recreation Reserve.

grubbers cricket

dream start at Queenscliff

for four finals spots A Grade:Ocean Grove’s A side gave Queenscliff a cricket lesson on Saturday, as they dismissed the home team for a lowly 76 before piling on 44 for no loss before the end of play. 8th placed Queenscliff didn’t play as though their season depended on it, whilst the 4th placed Grubbers appeared on a mission as they rampaged the home team at Queenscliff Recreation Reserve last Saturday. B Grade Ocean Grove v Queenscliff results unavaiable.

C Grade: Cross town rivals Ocean Grove #1 took on Collendina #2 under ominous clouds at Shell Road Recreation Reserve last Saturday. The Grubbers won the toss and elected to bat in conditions that could easily have favoured the bowlers. After 58 overs the Grubbers were bowled out for just 138. Collendina’s Dwayne Johnston was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/23 off his 15 overs whilst Julian Wilson, Paul Donald and Jacob Gasior took

two apiece to restrict the Ocean Grove batters on the usually run friendly Shell Road Recreation Reserve wicket. The Grubbers will be looking to lock down top spot on the ladder whilst the Cobras are playing for pride sitting in 12th nearing the end of the season. C Grade: Ocean Grove #2 side took on St Leonards at Len Trewin Reserve last Saturday. The Grubbers batted first making 162 all out off its 58.5 overs.

D Grade: Ocean Groves D Grade side took on Barwon Heads at Barwon Heads in a one day fixture last weekend. After sending the home side into bat the Grubbers could only restrict Barwon Heads 6/203 off it’s 40 overs. Batting second is never easy in a One Day game but the Grubbers proved that wrong as they rampaged all over the home side making 9/205 off 39 overs to record a memorable victory in one of the most exciting cricket games of the season.

Getting ahead doesn’t have to mean letting go.

Knights in the realm

OCEAN Grove recently fielded a team of rowers in the NAVY Australian Surf Rowers League Series at Anglesea. 40 crews raced in the competition in sunny conditions and a testing three foot wave on a falling tide. Many crews came unstuck throughout the day with the better crews moving through to the finals. Racing was in front of a large crowd with plenty of supporters coming down to watch the best crews race for the Victorian navy series. Picture: Andy Berry, janjuc.redbubble.com

DREAM START OCEAN Grove A Grade has made a dream start to its two-match at Queensliff. A cunning bowling attack saw off the home side for a meagre 76 on Saturday, and they have already made a 44/0 start to their innings. Coutas fell mainly to the bowling hand of Shaun Braniff 4/22, Dale Savage 3/12 and Michael Gill 3/18, as well as the wicketkeeping skills of Stuart Anderson who took three scalps. Grubbers start against Coutas bodes well as they now sit fourth on the ladder after a 239 to 119 win over Newcomb at the end of January.
