DESPITE living thousands of kilometers away, Ocean Grove nurse, Alison Soutar, felt the full brunt of the February 22 earthquake in Christchurch. The devastating earthquake measured 6.3 on the Richter Scale and hit the city’s CBD about 1pm the Tuesday afternoon. Alison grew up in Christchurch before moving to Australia in 2001. She and her husband Brett McCalman have lived in Ocean Grove since 2006. With the majority of her friends and family living in the city, when Alison first heard about the quake whilst at work, her immediate thoughts went to her father and brothers who work in the CBD. “I checked my phone and I had a text from dad saying John and I are ok cos they work on the ninth and tenth floor of a building,” she said. OCEAN Grove got a good clean up thanks to volunteers led by Coastcare. The local branch’s first conservation event was part of Clean Up Australia Day and they called on members of the Ocean Grove community to lend a helping hand to collect litter along the foreshore. Around 30 people rolled up their sleeves and pulled on a pair of gloves to participate in Sunday’s Clean Up event. John O’Reilly, member of the Coastcare group, was thrilled with the turnout saying “it was a wonderful show of community spirit. People really put themselves out to collect rubbish and contribute to the clean up.” The group scoured the beach and walking tracks from 10W to Raafs Beach collecting a diverse array of rubbish. Amongst the

most common items collected were “beer bottles, water bottles, dog poo and cigarette butts” reports volunteer Andy Corlett. If left on the beaches, these items can take years to breakdown and can have a detrimental impact on native fauna particularly if they are mistakenly ingested as
food. Clean Up Australia Day is the nation’s largest community participation event. Those who turned out on Sunday at Ocean Grove were joined by up to 600,000 other Australians nationwide who participated in the event in their local area. Ocean Grove Coastcare plan on running
community events throughout 2011 and will also have a stall at the Ocean Grove Community Picnic Day and Festival of the Sea. Please visit the stalls to find out more about the group and how to be involved. Alternatively you can send an email to oceangrovecoastcare@ gmail.com.
Aftershock: a local perspective CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1. The lack of mobile phone reception meant one of Alison’s brothers was unaccounted for until about two hours after the initial quake. “I was fine until I was in a patients room and I saw that there had been fatalities and I still hadn’t heard from my brother then I kind of lost it,” she said. “It was just that horrible, horrible feeling of knowing that someone you love or care about could be dead.” Luckily every one of Alison’s family survived the quake but hasn’t come away from it unscathed. Talking to Alison’s father Brian Soutar on the phone from Christchurch, the trauma that people went through is apparent in his voice. “Its been a pretty tough week for everyone,” he said. Working in his office in the CBD, Brian escaped the building with his life
however his business offices were destroyed. “The building is still standing but I know the offices, because I left there obviously immediately after the quake, are absolutely trashed,” he said. “It’s like a war zone - it looks awful, not a great feeling.” Despite not being allowed back into the city as of yet to salvage anything that survived the destruction, Brian said that people’s attitudes are staying positive. “There’s fantastic camaraderie around, people really keen to get going and do things to get life back to normal,” he said. Alison arrived in Christchurch in 2010, only two days after the September 4 quake and described enduring the numerous aftershocks that followed. “They were getting so many aftershocks it was awful. I was a nervous wreck,” she said. “Every time a truck would go
past you would think it was a quake because it makes the glass rattle, youre just on edge the whole time.” Only five minutes after talking to Brian, he phoned back with news that Christchurch had experienced yet another terrifying aftershock, only one of thousands that have hit the city since September. “There’s been a number of quite significant ones to be honest,” he said. “They’re really frightening,” said Alison. Despite living only 8km from the CBD, Alison’s parent’s home is still standing unlike thousands of other people’s houses and businesses. “I think there’s about $100,000 damage to their house from the last earthquake so there will be more since,” she said. “You’re relieved that everyone is ok but then you see the destruction and your whole childhood has been ripped apart and all your memories ripped
apart just like that.” Brian described the western half of the city that has been significantly destroyed and said it is the historic and iconic buildings that have suffered the most. “Its really been quite brutal on the really, really nice historic structures, especially the churches,” he said. One of the churches that was greatly affected was the 150 year old chapel that Alison and Brett were married in, in 2005. “It’s really sad, but never mind, maybe they can rebuild.” Alison said she will travel to Christchurch to see her family and help out but will wait until she can be valuable and not just another person using the city’s stretched resources, “I want to but at the moment there’s nothing I can really do.” “I just really want to give my family a hug.”
quick news Apple Fair this weekend OCEAN Grove’s Apple Fair is this weekend and highlighting the musical entertainment will be husband and wife musicians Chris Wilson and Sarah Carroll as well as ‘old boys’ The Rustys. The Fair offers plenty for the whole family, including carnival rides and kids activities, great food and a full program of music. The Apple Fair is on Sunday March 13 from 10am. CFA call for volunteers OCEAN Grove CFA is recruiting new members, especially those that may be able to turn out during daytime hours. Once members are registered, they can commence training. The next recruitment training course will start in April. Anyone contemplating volunteering in their local community can get more details from the Ocean Grove Fire Brigade website at www. oceangrovecfa.com.au, under Volunteers. Meanwhile Grove crews have been busy over the past fortnight, attending six incidents, five of which were in the town. On February 19 crews made a public service visit to Feiglin Court, the next day they were called to support Queenscliff dealing with a fire in a building at King Street. On February 27 crews were called to another minor fire inside a building, this time at Canis Court, Ocean Grove. Just before 9am on February 28 Ocean Grove and Wallington turned out to a fire alarm at the Stepping Stones day care centre in Tareeda Way. The building was evacuated but it was deemed a false alarm. On the same day a crew was called to Madeley Street, although details were unavailable. Crews were also called to Ocean Plaza on March 6 (see story page 3).

OCEAN Grove local Eliza Skinner has paid tribute to Melbourne school teacher Books Paul Simpson who wason parade BCard.indd 1 swept to his death while snorkelling with a group of his students near Bells Beach last week. Eliza, who is a former student of Mr Simpson’s, is in London but wanted to record her sadness at his loss. “I just wanted to say that he was such a great person,” she said. “He was my year 12 Biology teacher at Methodist Ladies’ College and one of my favourite teachers. “My class took a similar snorkelling trip to the one he was on, except we went to Queenscliff instead. He was a teacher For appointments telephone 5256 2500 that really cared and always tried to make you Shop 4, 2-20 Shell Road, Ocean Grove do your best, not because he wanted you to, but because he knew you could and he would help you realise that. I would do my best to try and put him off his game in class, but he never cracked. He was great at taking a joke and I held the highest respect for him. “He was very caring and his actions at Bells Beach showed what a selfless person he was.” Eliza, a former Voice reporter, added: “I am truly saddened to hear about this and I know that there are a lot of people, especially students, who will remember Mr Simpson as someone that helped them along at some stage of their lives.”

Mum calls for emergency key to be available
Freed from lift TWO children were freed by the turn of a key after being trapped in the Ocean Plaza lift for nearly an hour on Saturday. However, relieved mum Antoinette Blair has called for a change of policy after it emerged that neither the police or local fire brigade are provided with keys that could have provided quick access to the lift. Locals on the scene say this was the fourth time people had been stuck in the lift. On top of that it is believed the lift’s emergency phone was also playing up. Police and firefighters were called to the Parade car park lift at just after lunch on Saturday but had to wait patiently until engineers arrived. Inside the lift were 12-year-old Tom and his sister Lauren, 11. The youngsters were calm throughout and were speaking with their mum through the door. They were also told that friends, firefighters and a police officer were outside to help them. “If I had been in the lift I would have been angry,” said Antoinette

afterwards. “I have Telstra and I couldn’t get any reception here. If I had been stuck in the lift I would have been frantic. “They are young and ok but if it had been an elderly person or an asthmatic then it could have been a different story.” Antoinette said she would be writing a letter of complaint to the centre managers calling on them to make a key available to emergency crews. It was all smiles as the kids stepped out of the lift but Lauren and Tom admitted: “It was a bit frightening at the start.”

Drop in for a reunion
LOCKSMITH Greg Evans
TURNKEY
A reunion for kids past and present from the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre’s Drop-In program will be held in April. Drop In co-creator and co-ordinator, Nicki Dunne, along with two original members, Lachy Phelan and Leah O’Donoghue met up last week to catch up on ten years since their first meeting. The Drop In program was created for local high school aged kids to give them somewhere to spend their free time on a Friday nights. Nicki said it was in response to the lack of youth aimed activities and the high vandalism rate throughout Ocean Grove. “We served a purpose for you guys at the time, we gave you a place to hang out and do your spray painting,” she said to Lachy and Leah. The original Drop In group were told that they could do their graffiti and spray painting at the Neighbourhood Centre

sessions and if any of their tags were found around town they would have to clean them up themselves. “In the first year of Drop In we saw a drop in youth crime in the street by 85%,” she said. The original group met in March 2001 and had about 35 members that remain good friends until this day. “I’m still pretty much friends with all of them,” said Leah Ten years later Nicki has about 120 kids on her books and the Drop In sessions receive an average of about 45 kids. Nicki said as the kids grow up and become too old for Drop In, there are always plenty of younger ones to fill their place. “Over the ten years I reckon we’ve had about 2000 kids and its really nice that you see younger siblings come through,” she said. In the ten years that Nicki has co-ordinated

Drop In, she has seen social work with teens change from drug, alcohol and crime based issues to the more complex cyber bulling and mental health problems plaguing today’s kids. “Even though (the original group) were mucking up a lot, it was easy social work, it was a matter of right or wrong,” Nicki said. “Now it’s based a lot more on mental health.”
“We were the worst kids,” added Lachy. “But it was good people, good times, it was better than sitting round the streets getting into strife,” he said. “We were the most fun,” said Leah. Leah and Lachy are both in their mid twenties now and join many of the ex-members that have studied, are working and some of which have young families of their
own. “I look at these kids as my own but they’re not even kids anymore,” said Nicki. “I cant wait, so many of them I haven’t see in five or so years.” The ten year Drop In reunion will be held at the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre on April 15 from 6pm. Packed for the park picnic IF you forget to set your clock back and find yourself at the Ocean Grove Park before noon on Sunday 3 April, you will either have first pick of the prime picnic sites, or you may be coerced into helping set up marquees. The feature activity on the day is the Community Showcase Picnic, a fun day where all are welcome to enjoy or participate in the displays from the many and varied community groups in our township. From the Bridge Club to the Community Garden Group, the Cubs and the car lovers, there will be a huge range of interesting things to see and learn about. And ,of course, what is a picnic without families and people who simply enjoy sitting down for a yarn and a packed lunch! The picnic day is being organised by the Ocean Grove Community Enterprise (OGCE) and jointly hosted by the Community Enterprise,
the Ocean Grove Community Association and the Ocean Grove Business Association. It is being supported by key partners Rotary and the Ocean Grove Park, where the picnic blankets will be laid out amid a range of marquees showcasing local groups. Local ward councillor Jan Farrell, who has tipped in a generous $3,000 from her discretionary fund to cover costs for the day, said: “This is a fabulous opportunity for everyone to find out about the many interest groups and, in a town the size of Ocean Grove, it’s important that people can find ways to connect with each other.” The Lions Club is putting on a sausage sizzle that will be free for kids and entertainment includes Dazzling Dan’s magic show, live music, an animal farm, the Cubs/ Scouts with games and activities. Information and commentary from Trevor Chappell and Ken Guyett will broadcast

to come along from 12 noon through til 4pm – no doubt there will be a few who turn up early if
they forget about the end of daylight savings,” said Helen Butteriss, Chair of the OGCE.
“Late or early, we encourage everyone to bring a picnic and enjoy the free entertainment,”

Thanks to SES volunteers
Dear Editor, On Saturday 19 February the strong winds felled a large tree on my property in Ocean Grove effectively blocking access to and from my house. The tree did not cause any damage and no one was hurt but I did not have any way of removing the tree myself so I called for help from the State Emergency Service. A few hours later a truckload of SES workers showed up and within 15 minutes the tree had been chopped up and stacked out of the way. The SES
volunteers worked like a well-oiled machine; efficiently, quietly (as quiet as a chainsaw can be) and the most outstanding quality was teamwork. These people don’t get anywhere near enough credit for the work they do for the community. My personal thanks goes to the team of volunteers that helped me out with a problem I didn’t have the means to deal with myself.

State view - Lisa Neville MP Commitments to the Bellarine I am honoured to continue to represent the Bellarine in the Parliament of Victoria for a third term and I will continue to work hard for all our constituents. Amongst the Labor Government’s major election commitments, if re elected was to fund $5 million for an upgrade to the Shell Road Reserve Sporting Precinct at Ocean Grove. The new government has not made this commitment. I recently spoke in Parliament, requesting the Minister for Sport and Recreation to provide
funding for the project to support the growing community of Ocean Grove. This is a well researched, supported and needed project that builds on the funding provided to build the Bellarine Aquatic Centre and has been a priority for the clubs and community in Ocean Grove. I will continue to advocate to the Government to secure funding for this essential project. National Ride2School Day I encourage children on the Bellarine to participate in the 5th Annual National Ride2School Day on Wednesday March 16, 2011.
Last year approximately 140,000 children participated in Ride2School Day run in conjunction with Bicycle Victoria. Riding to school is an easy way for young people to get some of the 60 minutes exercise they need every day to stay healthy. I am delighted that Bellarine schools have a strong participation rate in the program and actively encourage children to engage in regular physical activity. Grants Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP) The VESEP which replaces the
previous Community Safety Emergency Support Program offers grants for volunteer groups to purchase new emergency equipment. The VESEP will contribute $2 for every $1 of funding up to $100,000. The grants could fund emergency equipment including trucks, tankers, boats and trailers, as well as fund building upgrades and refurbishments For more information, or for assistance with any other issues, please contact my office. OCEAN Grove local Georgie Brown is a rare 18-year-old, writes Carly Helweg. Instead of taking a year off between finishing year 12 and university for herself, Georgie is using her time and hard earned money to help others less fortunate. Georgie is currently spending six months in Malawi, Africa, teaching nine students most of whom are profoundly deaf. Georgie’s mum Lisa said her daughter’s education at Sacred Heart College and their strong emphasis on social justice inspired her to volunteer. “(Georgie) just felt like she’s had a lot of opportunities and it was her turn to give something back,” she said. Georgie is part of Latitude Global Volunteering, an international charity that places young adults in positions all over the world to help make a difference. Lisa said after hearing the story of an exLatitude volunteer,
Georgie instantly filled out an application form to volunteer when she had finished year 12. “She actually wanted to go somewhere where she felt she’d really make a difference,” she said. “She’s had to work and save money, its cost her about $7000 to go and help.” From January 8 until July 27, Georgie is living at Mountain View School for the Deaf, about Georgie Brown, above, is spending a year teaching students in Malawi, also pictured. 100 kilometers from the family refuse to learn dead or refusing to learn sporting equipment. the closest town. Club hails new era
CLUB Grove’s new $5million conference centre and members lounge has opened for business completing the ‘jigsaw of improvements’ for bowlers and the local community. Surveying the facilities after a hectic building program, an excited Michael Lewis said: “I am ecstatic and so is my team. We’ve just had nine months of a build which included building through the really busy part of Christmas and the likes. We would really like to thank everyone for their patronage and their patience during that period.” The new 120-seat members lounge and 160-seat conference and function facility, adds to the also recently completed Leleans restaurant and a cafe which includes a kids room, a lounge bar and new TAB facilities. The function centre comes with all the latest IT based technology, projectors and audio visual features common to a high quality facility. Mr Lewis who was appointed GM just over four years ago said that the new facility brings to the community “a proper function centre suited to everything from boutique weddings and birthdays to corporate events. They have even appointed a function and events coordinator to manage the new business. However Mr Lewis also added that bowling remains at the heart of the facility. “Our core business is bowling, our history is bowling, and to be able to provide quality amenities to our bowling fraternity we need to have other things happening,” he said. “That is why we need other areas of revenue raising.” During the next three years the club is aiming

to more than double its 4,000 membership, 400 of which are bowlers. Mr Lewis also hinted that further improvements – part of the ongoing master plan for Club Grove – would involve a survey of the current bowling needs. “The next thing for us is to do a complete review of the needs of our bowling membership. We will be reviewing, for example, the number of greens we have. That’s our next focus. Elaborating on this he said: “Currently we have two grass greens and one synthetic green. As we grow our bowling membership and as we expose our club to more people who want to participate in community bowls and barefoot bowls, so the demand increases
for our greens. Things are tight now. “We are going to do a full strategic review of the greens and also the bowlers’ amenities beyond what we’ve just done. “I don’t want to preempt the review but we will be keeping an open mind in terms of how the greens might be expanded going forward.” The new facilities began operating during last month’s three-day Classic Fours competition and are now fully operational although an official launch and events are being planned for April. “We welcome everyone to come down and have a look at the facility and share in everything that it offers,” said Mr Lewis. “It’s filled a huge void really, there wasn’t anything of the nature of

function facility we can now provide. “My view is that we’ve built this for our bowlers but also for the
community and our success going forward will determined by how much the community now buys into this facility.”

I DON’T think I could ever live away from the coast. After living in Ocean Grove your whole life you become attached to the familiarity of the place, it feels like home. My family has had three different houses in Ocean Grove but living in Dare Street was the best because it was close to the park and the beach. Some of my earliest memories are of climbing the trees in our backyard and at the park down the street. I went to Ocean Grove Primary, riding my bike to school most days and then attended Bellarine Secondary College where I had to catch the bus. A lot of the mates I have now, I’ve known all my life after meeting them at school. I got my first surfboard off my uncle when I was in Grade Six, a Rip Curl, Doug Rogers from the 1980s, it was awesome. I still have that board in the garage and will have it forever, there are too many fond memories to get rid of it. From Year 7 I would come home from school, inhale
some barbecue shapes, clip on the helmet, put my board in the rack and head on down the beach for a surf, rain, hail or shine. If it was winter we would ride home in our wetsuits to stave off the inevitable hypothermia that would come that time of year in Victoria. When I got my licence, we’d pile into one of our cars, boards and all, and loved life. I got my first job at Coles as a deli boy which was a start but I then moved to Adventure Park when I was 16 and that was great fun. I got to work outdoors in the sun, met heaps of mates and had plenty of good times. I studied briefly in Ballarat, doing Exercise Science after finishing year 12 but didn’t enjoy living away from the coast so transferred to a similar course in Geelong. After qualifying as a personal trainer I worked at Ocean View Health Club. In 2007 I wanted a bit of a change and started working for Strapper in Ocean Grove and Torquay. I get to talk about surfboards and surfing all day which is
my passion so it’s a natural fit. My other passion is travelling. I’ve been to Bali many times and hunted out waves in the Philippines. I also love Thailand, anywhere that’s hot and tropical. There’s nothing better than experiencing a different culture through meeting the locals, eating the same food and riding the same waves. If I could live anywhere it would be Bali, such great weather, waves, people and food. Ocean Grove needs a good bar or lounge, somewhere to chill out with your mates on a Friday night and have a drink. One of the downfalls of living here is that summer gets more and more hectic every year and not being able to get a car park down the street or at your own beach is frustrating. It is only for a month of the year though so I guess it’s ok. Ocean Grove in the future is probably only going to get bigger, busier and more crowded everywhere, especially in the surf. But until that point comes it’s still a great place to live.

Music or muzak? DURING the summer holiday period when The Terrace buzzes with people and traffic, some may wonder where the music playing in the street comes from. Locals may be surprised to find out the person behind the music we’ve listened to whilst shopping or sitting outside local cafes is none other than Paul Drake. Manager of Home Hardware and President of the Ocean Grove Business Association, Paul has helped to organise the yearly Christmas carols and the pop music that plays throughout The Terrace. Paul said the music plays a big part in people’s moods and has tried to play songs that appeal to everyone. “There’s been a lot of 80s music and I think that’s where it works, it appeals to most people,” Paul said. This year Paul has gone
one step further matching music to Valentine’s and Australia Day with iconic love songs and Australian artists pumping out the speakers, however he is quick to dismiss the suggestion he is a resident muso. “I’m no John Bowman,” he said. Paul is calling on local’s opinions and suggestions for the music, whether it should be played a longer period of time and if this year’s songs have been well liked. “I think during summer the street is a hub of activity and the music adds to that whereas when it quiets down that’s when you tune into it,” he said. “It would be great to hear what people think.” Tell us what you think. “It’s not something I’ve really thought about but the music is a nice thing to have, its gives a great atmosphere to the street.”
“They overplay the Christmas songs a bit but I can’t really say I’ve noticed the music, it kind of turns into white noise.”
“I think the music is great but it’s hard to get songs that people older and younger both like.”
“They should definitely play the music all year round, it’s good in the street.”

Bargain hunters bible SELF confessed op shop tragic Heidi Wane has turned her passion for bargain hunting into a useful guide to local opportunity shops. Heidi said after giving away her own business she found comfort in op shopping which became a form of therapy for her. “I can’t go past an op shop without going in,” she said. After years of visiting op shops and becoming frustrated with the inconsistent opening times and hidden locations, Heidi decided to put together the ‘Pocket Guide to Op Shops around Geelong’. The guide covers over 80 shops from the Bellarine Peninsula, Geelong, the Surf Coast
Email to register for our first and Western Districts and includes a database of over 350 charity op shops around Victoria. Heidi has included all the information needed to enhance the op shop experience with location, opening hours, goods sold as well as parking advice. The passport size means avid op shoppers can leave the guide in their handbag or glove-box for their next treasure hunt. Heidi said she had an extremely positive response from op shop volunteers whilst researching the guide. “It’s been overwhelming, it’s really been

HEALTH STEP INTO LIFE
Q
I love being outdoors and want to try one of your sessions but I don’t think I am fit enough to keep up. What do you suggest?
A
Joining any new group can feel intimidating. We are concerned that we won’t fit in for any number of reasons. At Step into Life we envisage large groups of people of all ages, body types and fitness levels participating in a fun, healthy, non-threatening group outdoor personal training program. Prior to your first session I will talk to you about your health and fitness goals, and any health and fitness issues you may have. I will then make recommendations to the number of sessions and type of sessions you should attend each week to reach those goals. During your first session I will be able to assess your fitness and give you more detailed feedback. All our sessions cater for all fitness levels, many sessions are time based, ie you do a particular exercise for 1 min. Fitter people would therefore do more of the exercise than the less fit, but you will all be doing it together and you will all be working towards your own particular goals. As you get fitter you will do more in the same time period. My recommendation is that you give me a call and have a chat, then book in for a free trial session. If you procrastinate and say I need to get fitter first, I’m going to walk the dog on the beach, chances are you will do that for a few days and then stop, if you come and train with me you won’t stop because I won’t let you. You will start to have more energy, feel better, get toned, have fun and make some new friends and you will probably even take the dog for a walk too. I promise I will look after you and you will be able to take part in the session. Pick up the phone and give me a call today and get started on achieving those health and fitness goals.
OCEAN EYES OPTOMETRISTS
Q
Q A
How can a podiatrist help me?
A
Have you ever been troubled with sore feet or lower limb pain? “ My feet are killing me!” is a frequently heard complaint, yet only a small percentage of people seek professional help for their foot pain. A common misconception is that sore feet are normal: they are not.
It raises the question, “why should I pay a premium price for frames?” In this case, the old adage “you get what you pay for” is right. If you are looking for premium quality, excellent comfort, unique up-to-the-minute design, and lasting construction, you can expect the outlay to be greater. However, it is likely to be an investment that will return you greater value for money in the long run. A beautiful, lightweight, comfortable frame that perfectly complements your features and personality can be a joy to wear, and quality frames retain their sparkle for a long time.
Our feet are generally strong, complex structures, which make possible one of the distinguishing characteristics of the human species – upright walking. Like any part of the body, however, feet are vulnerable to neglect, abuse, injury and disease.
Do you find your letter box crammed with advertizing material promising cheap glasses? But when you look around, there is wide variation in the prices of frames and lenses.
At Ocean Eyes, we stock a range of frames to suit all budgets, and can advise on the right look and fit for you, so that you will LOVE your glasses. There are vast differences in lens quality as well, which can be harder for consumers to appreciate initially. Great vision is largely dependent on your lens selection. The quality, design and lens material will impact on visual performance, comfort and the cosmetic appearance of your lenses. Matching the right lens attributes to your vision and lifestyle needs is the key to achieving great vision. At Ocean Eyes we will always focus on what’s best for you first, rather than what’s best for our bottom line. We have complete freedom to recommend products that provide the best solution for you, as opposed to selecting from a limited range specified by corporate guidelines. We are committed to the highest standards of eyecare and eyewear. We believe your eyes deserve nothing less.

Podiatrists are university-educated health professionals who diagnose and treat foot and lower limb conditions. These may include: • Prevention and treatment of foot complications arising from diseases that affect the whole body such as diabetes, arthritis and blood circulatory problems. • Foot pain caused by anomalies in the structure and function of the feet (biomechanical disorders). Correcting alignment and improving the efficiency of the feet through use of orthotics, which are devices fitted into shoes, can often greatly help these conditions. Poor foot function can also cause pain in the legs and joints further up the body such as knees, hips and the lower back. • Conditions affecting bone and soft tissue, often felt in the heels, as a result of growth, activity and ageing which affect children through to the elderly. • Painful skin and nail problems such as corns and calluses, thick or ingrown nails or infections (e.g. tinea and viral papillomas). • Advice on the right footwear for you. You will enjoy a better quality of life free of foot pain. At Bellarine Podiatry we are committed to providing caring and professional foot health services and we’ll be happy to help you.

HEALTH OCEAN GROVE MASSAGE
Q A
How can Massage benefit my health?
There are two important ways that massage helps you stay healthier.
Firstly, most people are aware of how massage can help you recover more quickly and less painfully from sports injuries and muscle fatigue. Poor posture from sitting at a computer, being a busy mum, being a builder, plumber, swimming teacher and lots more, can cause all muscular and joint pain, discomfort or back pain that massage can treat. Secondly, massage helps your overall health and well-being as it stimulates the immune system, improves circulation and relieves congestion in the tissues. This means your immune system works better so you stay more healthy. It also stimulates blood cell production and promotes lymph flow which hastens the elimination of cellular wastes and improves your injury recovery time. Benefits of massage also include improving muscle tone and delaying muscle atrophy resulting from inactivity. Deep massage can separate fascial fibres, prevent the formation of adhesions and reduce inflammation and oedema in joints and soft tissue. Massage assists the body’s natural ability to heal itself. At the Ocean Grove Remedial Massage Centre our mission statement is improving your quality of life. We do this by offering Remedial Massage, Bowen therapy and other proven techniques, performed by qualified, experienced therapists. Improving your quality of life can mean being pain free, having no headaches, having the energy to start an exercise program, getting a great night’s sleep, improving brain function or simply being able to reach up to hang out the washing. All these things are real benefits that our clients experience with regular massage.
POINT LONSDALE PHYSIOTHERAPY
Q
If I experience recurrent neck or back pain or want to improve posture, flexibility and balance would Pilates benefit me at any age or level of fitness?
A
Yes many people of all ages and varying levels of fitness find Pilates exercises help to significantly relieve recurrent neck or back pain with the added bonus of assisting return to activities such as gardening and playing sport. Spinal problems associated with Discs, Arthritis, Sciatica, Headaches, Osteoporosis, Pregnancy and Incontinence are all conditions which can be helped by regular Pilates. Pilates exercises also have extra benefits such as improved posture, flexibility, balance, overall body toning and improved pelvic floor functioning. It also offers a safe exercise regime during and after pregnancy. Pilates exercises re-train, strengthen and improve the endurance of the deep postural muscles of the trunk. Why are these muscles important? Research has found that persistent or recurring neck or back pain may be due to poor muscle control around the spine. This may lead to too much movement between the vertebrae and therefore cause pain. Re-training the ‘core’ muscles has been shown to be highly successful in preventing chronic or recurrent neck and back pain. Point Lonsdale Sports and Spinal Clinic offers Pilates exercises (Machine Based) specifically designed for individual symptoms. Classes of one hour duration with a maximum of five people allow for excellent supervision and monitoring by qualified Physiotherapists. Classes are refundable by heath funds. If you feel Pilates could help you, please contact Barb Vallance at Point Lonsdale Physiotherapy Sports and Spinal Clinic on 5258 4633 to discuss your situation.
BELLARINE OSTEOPATHIC CLINIC
Q
For what reasons do people come to see an Osteopath and is treatment only to the spine? Is Osteopathic treatment safe for children, the elderly and pregnant women? Do I need to be referred for treatment by a Doctor? How often do I need to see an Osteopath?
A
The most common complaints that Osteopaths treat are back and neck pain. Other problems like headache and pain or symptoms in the arms or legs are often related to the main complaint and can be relieved by treatment also. Osteopathic treatment addresses the whole body, not just the spine. While the techniques usually focus on the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones, joints, and the tissues that connect these) the effects can be widespread. Osteopathic treatment is also effective for sports and workplace injuries, and postural problems. An osteopathic approach is safe for all ages because Osteopaths use a variety of techniques and tailor treatment to the individual patient. Osteopaths study for five years at university level and are very aware of medical conditions that require special consideration when manual therapy is considered. A referral is not generally necessary; exceptions being Veterans’ Affairs patients and those under a Medicare-funded initiative known as “Enhanced Primary Care Plan”. Where a third party is involved the Osteopath will liaise with that body to ensure the best possible care. The number of treatments necessary depends on many factors but most importantly the nature of the problem and how long it has been there. At the first consultation the Osteopath, in discussion with the patient, will be able to advise on the likely course of treatment and what to expect along the way. In cases of previous trauma and chronic disease while treatment is effective it is not curative and ongoing therapy is advised for maximum benefit.

HEALTH CONTOURS
Q
Why do women need resistance weight training?
A
You’ll lose more fat than you’ll gain in muscle. If you train with weights two to three times per week, it’s unlikely that you’ll bulk up. Unlike men, women typically don’t gain size from strength training like men as they have up to 30 times less hormones. Contours’ resistance weights are designed specifically for women wanting to tone up without bulking up. Your new muscle will help fight obesity. As you add muscle from strength training, your resting metabolism will increase, so you’ll burn more kilojoules during the day. For each kilo of muscle you gain, you’ll burn 77 to 110 kilojoules more each day. You’ll be a stronger woman. Moderate weight training increases a woman’s strength by 30 to 50%. Extra strength will make it easier to accomplish some daily activities, such as lifting children or groceries. Your bones will benefit. Weight training can increase spinal bone mineral density by 13% in six months, making it a powerful tool against osteoporosis. Contours’ weight-bearing equipment provides positive and negative resistance to help prevent brittle bones You will reduce your risk of Diabetes. Adult-onset diabetes is a growing problem for women and men. Research indicates that weight training can increase glucose utilisation by 23 percent in four months. You will fight heart disease. Making strength training part of your exercise program will improve your cholesterol profile and blood pressure. You will beat back pain and fight arthritis. Strengthening the lower back muscles has an 80% success rate in eliminating or alleviating lower back pain. Weight training can also ease arthritis pain and strengthen joints. You’ll be a better athlete. Strength training can improve athletic ability and proficiency, and decrease the risk of injury. It will work no matter how old you are. Numerous women in their 70s and 80s have undertaken strength training using weight bearing equipment, proving that – with the supervision of a strength training professional - strength improvements are possible at any age. You’ll strengthen your mental health. Strength training has been often shown to reduce clinical depression symptoms more successfully than standard counseling.

OCEAN GROVE CHINESE MEDICINE
Q
what is chinese medicine and what can it be used for?
A
Chinese Medicine is a health practice that has been around for over 2000 years. It includes Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chinese massage and Cupping. As Chinese Medicine is a holistic therapy it also incorporates diet, exercise and general well being. It can be used in conjunction with Western Medicine and other therapies to maximise your health care. Chinese Medicine can be used to treat many different health matters ranging from the common cold to muscular and joint pain. It is also very useful in the treatment of arthritis, fertility, allergies such as asthma and hay fever, as well as mental illness such as depression and anxiety. Everyone can benefit from Chinese Medicine including infants and the elderly. On the whole, acupuncture is relatively pain free. However, certain acupuncture points are more sensitive than others which may cause temporary discomfort. Therapeutically, acupuncture will create a certain sensation which is what the practitioner sets out to achieve. This sensation, though not painful can be quite unusual for people new to acupuncture. Keep in mind the average size of an acupuncture needle is about the thickness of a human hair. At Ocean Grove Chinese Medicine, I am registered with the Chinese Medicine Registration Board of Victoria (CMRB). The CMRB exists to protect the public by ensuring a high quality of standards, practises and qualifications from the practitioners of Chinese Medicine. For more information contact Adrienne on 0432 961 910 or www.ogcm.com.au/contact.html.
We look forward to greeting you at Epic Health Clinic.

BIKRAM YOGA
Q
Q
Q
A
Why choose Hypnotherapy over other therapies?
The answer is quite simply that Hypnotherapy is the most effective non-medication therapy available today.
Contrary to popular belief modern Hypnotherapists don’t ‘hypnotize’ you. During a hypnotherapy session you are fully conscious and aware of the process, it is a very natural form of therapy that works with your subconscious self (*where many of the answers to your most enduring questions lie). Other forms of therapy might only treat symptoms while the underlying cause remains, some prescribe medication (and a label). But Hypnotherapy is totally natural and gets deep to the root cause of the problem allowing a direct understanding to occur. This understanding is often enough to release the emotional charge attached.
“I started seeing Steve for depression about 18 months ago. I had been to many, many therapists before with little success. Now I have worked through many issues and felt the emotions attached. Steve allows you to express yourself completely and he brings through a lot of support and guidance. I shall be eternally grateful”, Love Gemma Venn. “Steve, I cannot thank you enough. When I started work with you I was in a dark place of negativity with lots of negative self talk. With your guidance and support I have become much more positive and am living in a constant state of joy. I am totally in love with life and the world around me”, Tracey Hypnotherapy can help with a wide range of issues including Anxiety, Stress, Depression, Addiction, Negative thought patterns, Excessive worry, Relationships, Lack of energy, Not sleeping and Unusual symptoms. Steve also has qualifications in counseling also.
From time to time I suffer with joint and muscular pain, can physiotherapy treatment help me?
A
Yes. Physiotherapists treat a wide range of conditions and work with patients from the very young to our most elderly citizens. Joint and muscular pains are very common elements and they present in many different ways. Some of the more common conditions seen at our Ocean Grove Clinic include; back pain, neck pain, shoulder, knee and ankle injuries, muscle strains, joint sprains and arthritic conditions. Physiotherapists use a wide variety of treatment techniques and are highly skilled in soft tissue therapy, joint mobilisation / manipulation, electrotherapy agents (i.e. ultrasound and interferential), exercise prescription and rehabilitation post injury or surgery. An assessment of your injury by one of our experienced staff will help identify what particular type of treatment you will need. Often a number of techniques are used to treat the one injury. This allows the therapist to settle your pain, restore normal muscle and joint function and prevent re occurrence of your injury. Exercises to help self manage or prevent reoccurrences will be taught. The Ocean Grove community is a very active one and at times individuals will encounter various joint and muscular pains. Pain can limit your daily activities and may take an acute short term form or a longer lasting chronic pain pattern. We are able to work with you to help you manage your pain whatever form your pain presents in.
What is Bikram Yoga and why is it practiced in the heat?
A
It doesn’t matter what fitness level you are or how flexible you are Bikram Yoga is for everyone! Bikram Yoga is an exclusive style of Hatha Yoga that has been designed to systematically work every part of the body from the inside out. Bikram Yoga is named after its founder - Bikram Choudhury. It is a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises practiced in a heated room of 40 degrees Celsius. It allows you to use your body and mind to gain energy, create balance and experience optimal health and wellbeing. Bikram Yoga is practiced in a heated room, which allows you to go deeper and safer into the yoga postures. Your body becomes more flexible, the heat allows you to get into a posture that you never imagined you could do. The heated room eliminates the risk of injuries, promotes sweating, and helps you release toxins from your body. Each posture stretches and strengthens your muscles, joints, ligaments and works on your internal organs. The heat also increases the heart rate, Bikram Yoga is a strong cardiovascular workout and assists with losing weight. Bikram Yoga has many benefits and will help you lose weight, increase energy, reduce stress and anxiety, increase flexibility, develop strength and muscle tone and eliminate toxins. Here is what the students have to say about Bikram Yoga.
You do not require a referral to see one of our physiotherapists. If an x ray is required we can organise this for you. Unfortunately many people persist with their aches and pains when a simple visit to the physiotherapist can get you back onto your feet faster, walking the local beach or playing a round of golf.
‘Over the past twelve weeks I have become addicted to the Bikram Yoga feeling. I have lost 31cm from my hips, thighs and waist, dropped a dress size and lost 5kg. My skin is smoother and visibly healthier looking, I feel focused during the day. I would encourage anyone to give it a go but don’t stop at just one class!’ Julie
Appointments can be made at Geelong Physiotherapy Ocean Grove Clinic on 5255 5755. Consulting hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday mornings.

Where are our Little Penguins? A FRIEND recently saved a Little Penguin (formerly called Fairy Penguin) that he found in the shallows on Bells Beach and took to a wildlife refuge. However, sadly, there have been more than a few dead Little Penguins washed up on Ocean Grove beach lately. This made me wonder if there are any small colonies of Little Penguins in this region, or have the Penguins drifted a long way from home before perishing? Firstly, here are some amazing facts about Little Penguins: • Penguins are birds but they cannot fly. In fact their wings act like ‘flippers’ to help them swim. Little Penguins can swim faster than humans (in fact four times as fast as humans, they need to go in the Olympics)! • Little Penguins can dive to a depth of about 70 metres! They can swim up to 100 kms A DAY. They can make up to 700 dives per day. They are amazing! • The Little Penguin is the smallest Penguin in the world. It is around 30 cms long. • Little Penguins spend most of the day at sea, searching for food. They come back to land at nightfall, so that they are more camouflaged from predators. They are also awake for long periods at night, when they socialise and tend to their young
chicks, so they do not get much sleep! • Little Penguins have navy blue feathers on the back, and white feathers underneath. These colours help to protect the Penguin from predators when they are swimming, as the colours blend in with the colours of the ocean. • Little Penguins stay relatively warm at sea because their feathers are very dense, providing insulation. They keep their body waterproof because they secrete a liquid wax substance which covers their body. Their skin remains absolutely dry because of this. Amazing. • Penguins hold their breath when they are diving; they can not breathe underwater. • The average Fairy Penguin lives for seven years. The oldest Little Penguin at Phillip Island lived for 26 years. • All of the 17 species of Penguins in the world live in the Southern Hemisphere. So if you see a Penguin when you are on a beach in Scotland, you have been taking something you shouldn’t. • Humans pose the greatest threat to Penguins. They can die from oil spills, ingesting plastic bags, getting caught in fishing nets, or getting run over by cars. They are also preyed upon by foxes, ferrets, cats and dogs.
Little Penguins certainly are very interesting creatures! There are colonies of Little Penguins found along the coast of Southern Australia, from Perth, through to Bass Strait Islands and Tasmania, then up the Eastern Coast to Northern New South Wales. Little Penguins are also found in New Zealand. Colonies are established on the coast, where the Little Penguins dig burrows in the sand, usually under vegetation. The Penguin colony at Middle Island in Warrnambool was under threat from dogs and foxes, so in 2006 there was the introduction of The Middle Island Maremma Project; a world first environmental program which involved the use of Maremma Guard Dogs to protect breeding seabirds. There were only 10 Little Penguins surviving on Middle Island in 2006.

13th Beach Trails Barwon Coast’s draft plan to provide 3 trails within Barwon Heads to improve safety of access to the beaches on 13th Beach Rd for pedestrians and recreational cyclists has been on display for comments and submissions. Two of the trails link Stephens Parade Barwon Heads to beach access points on 13th Beach Rd whilst the third links alongside the road to the 13th Beach SLSC. Whilst the period of time for the lodging of submissions has now closed, details are still available on our web site www.barwoncoast.com.au Our Committee members will be reviewing all 119 submissions prior to deciding on the next stage of this project. Powered watercraft speed Barwon Coast is working in partnership with the Victorian Water Police and the Bellarine Police to raise awareness of the 5knot water speed limit in the Barwon River Estuary. This speed limit applies to all water craft including Jet Skis Ocean Grove Main Beach – DSA competition On 26th February the Disabled Surfers Association held their first event for 2011 under perfect skies
There are two Maremmas, Electra and Ne’ve, living on Middle Island. The breeding colony is slowly growing with a population estimate of at least 60 Little Penguins currently. It is well known that the largest Little Penguin colony found on mainland Australia is located at Phillip Island, where 60,000 Little Penguins can be found. This colony is located approximately 170 kms from Ocean Grove. There is a closer penguin colony located at St Kilda breakwater in Melbourne, where there are approximately 1000 Little Penguins. According to ‘Go Birding Tours’ (www.gobirding.com.au) Little Penguins are found fairly frequently in Corio Bay, and off the Southern Shores of the Bellarine Peninsula. I can only assume that they have come from either St Kilda or Phillip Island. As Little Penguins can swim very long distances, I can only assume that the deceased penguins on the Ocean Grove beach have come large distances from their colony in search of food, and have been caught in rough weather and, sadly, drowned. - shoulder restrictions - menstrual problems - neck restriction - tight hamstrings - vertigo and more

(one of the few this summer), with a glorious low tide , wide expanse of beach and gentl shore break. As pictured in the last issue of the “Voice” a large number of aquatic wheelchairs were available to assist in getting participants into the surf. Organisers advised that over 60 people participated on the day with over 180 volunteers assisting – what a great day for everyone. Access to the beach on the Aquatic wheelchairs was achievable via the ramp off the seawall that Barwon Coast funded two years ago. The ramp was constructed at the required level of fall to suit wheelchair requirements. Participants were also able to access the purpose built “disabled” toilets within the new $1m main beach amenity block . The units being purposely designed to be wide enough to accommodate the wide wheeled aquatic wheelchairs.
Dog Free Beaches The dog free beaches declaration changed as from 1st February with dogs allowed back on the Ocean Grove Beach (west of 13W Hodgson St), but they must be on a leash until the end of April. This also applies to the Barwon River beaches. From 13W (Hodgson St) east towards Collendina, dogs are permitted under effective control. Effective control is when your dog is within your sight and can be controlled by voice command. Please remember to “pick up after your dog” so that other users of beaches are not inconvenienced. Use the “Scoop the Poop” bags provided by Barwon Coast. Funding Our Operations Over 95% of our $4.2million revenue budget 10/11 is generated through the operation of our caravan parks and the surplus funds from the caravan park operations are used to provide over $1million for our coastal management activities and over $600,000 to fund capital works such as the recent demolition and rebuilding of the toilet and shower block at the Ocean Grove Main Beach. Within that revenue base approx $665,000 comes from the operation of our built accommodation component of the caravan parks. At Barwon Heads there are 19 accommodation units including the 4star Beach and Boat Houses that have very high occupancy rates (approx 85% year round) and contribute substantially to our operating funds. I encourage you to contact me to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning me on 5254 1371 Bob Jordan General Manager Barwon Coast, Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads office@barwoncoast.com.au

Swimming carnival The Christian College Bellarine Swimming Carnival was held on Monday 28th February and was blessed with fine weather and some sizzling competition in the pool. The House competition saw Taylor begin strongly, getting out to a 30 point lead after the backstroke heats, however they were soon swallowed up by a strong finishing Flynn House who had the stronger Butterfly results along with some very strong relay teams. Flynn finally took out
the Championship while Penman and Burrows shared 1st place in the Novelty events. In the final race of the day students witnessed a monumental occasion when the best of the best students took on an elite Teacher team in a 4 X 50m relay. The students proved too strong (even with some improvisation by the teachers) winning by a narrow margin. A fun and enjoyable day was had by all and we are looking forward to next year’s carnival.
Katie, Natasha and Sarah.
Sophie, Indiana and Allison.
Natalia.
Teen spirit SWIMMING Sports; a day for students to forget school work, get in the pool, and show their team spirit. In the photo above are a variety of hard working VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) and VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) year 12 students at Bellarine Secondary College putting the thought of homework behind them and having fun. As competitors displayed their skills in the water others cheered them on, scoring points for their team. Everybody dressed up in their house colours; yellow (Nepean), green (Swan), blue (Lonsdale), or
red (Corio). There were plenty of outstanding outfits from Mario Bros to a bear costume. The weather was perfect for swimming and sunny enough for there to be some burnt bodies. The swimming events were freestyle, back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly, and novelty events. Once again Charles and Genevieve Wild amazed everyone with their swimming ability. There was a lot of suspense over which house won the most points. It came down to a very close result but Corio took the trophy home at the end of the day. By Alex Cogan

THE Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre in Ocean Grove has been the venue for the Bellarine Futsal League on Monday evenings over the summer months. Futsal is the official FIFA version of 5-a-side soccer, being played locally on basketball courts with portable mini goals. This Football Federation Victoria affiliated senior men’s competition has been run by Futsal Geelong and has seen 10 teams from around the Bellarine playing for a top four place on the ladder and the opportunity to take the title of champions in the finals series. In addition to the futsal teams from the more recognised clubs
of Barwon Heads Soccer Club and SpringDale Football Club, the competition has seen players from all over the Bellarine and beyond form a number of independent teams full of ability and character. The Grand final was played on February 28, with Barwon Heads Soccer Club and One United booking their places through the semi finals at the expense of Team Fred & SpringDale Football Club respectively. Barwon Heads took the initiative in a tense game and capitalised on some One United defensive nerves to race ahead to a 3 goal lead. One United’s Anthony Vose put in a battling performance and
was instrumental in his teams effort to claw their way back into the game with two goals in quick succession. James Ramage was in clinical form for Barwon Heads and finished the night with 6 goals to his name as the Hammerheads once again pulled away from their opponents, but One United were not about to let their undefeated season go to waste and fought back once more to take the lead for the first time with barely a minute to play. Despite a frenzied finale to the game, One United held firm to win 8-7 on the night and claimed the champions cup for winning
the finals series, to go with their premiers trophy for finishing top of the ladder. Barwon Heads will take heart from how quickly they have adapted to playing the official indoor version of the world game and will be aiming to go one better when the next season of the Bellarine Futsal League kicks off at the end of March. Futsal Geelong are seeking expressions of interest from new and existing futsal teams to take part in the next season of Futsal at the Bellarine Aquatic & Sports Centre in Ocean Grove at the end of March. Details from Geoff Briggs on 0428 501150.
Locals grab fun run honours OCEAN Grove runners finished ahead of the field in the 2011 TGM Barwon Banks Fun Run held in Geelong. In a wet and muddy race, Ryan Christian was the overall winner of the 10 km run with a time of 32:25. An up and coming competitor, Ryan has had a successful summer placing second in December’s Rip to River. Ocean Grove was also well represented in the female 10 km race with local runner Kristen Wyatt taking first place for the
second year in a row. Kristen said she ran the race in 38:32, over one minute quicker than her 2010 run. “I did beat my time from last year by about a minute but it wasn’t my fastest time on that course,” she said. Despite the miserable weather, Kristen said the conditions were not bad for the race. “The track was really slippery in spots, you had to watch your step but it was actually very still, it was pretty good conditions.” The annual Barwon Banks
raises money for children living with illness or disability including cerebral palsy, Autism and Down Syndrome. Event coordinator, Alice Fraser, from the organising partner, Give Where You Live Geelong, said over 1000 people participated in the race. “The rain did hold back the numbers from last year,” she said. Alice said the exact fundraising figures weren’t yet finalised but they are hoping to have raised about $25,000.

Grove grab two of four THE newly-renovated section of the Ocean Grove Bowling Club was opened just in time to host their major event for the year – the Ocean Grove Classic Fours. Once again the tournament attracted a top quality field of bowlers from all parts of the state. The eventual winners came from Chalambar
–Ararat skipped by Shane Todd. The Ocean Grove lads performed admirably with the rink of Peter Patterson, Roy Brown, Terry Brady and Warren Davis coming second and fourth place going to Mick West, Peter Nixon, Geoff Fry and Michael Allen. The tournament was a great success for the club and was highly praised by many for the
standard of greens, meals, organisation and especially the new look clubhouse which was the envy of many visitors. Our Ladies Divisions 1 and 3 sides are preparing for Grand Finals on Tuesday and our Division 7 men have a preliminary final this weekend. Best wishes and good bowling to all.

OCEAN Grove stand up paddle boarder Kristi Page took part in the Wild Womens Water Day at Eastern View last month. This was the 1st competiton in Australia to have shortboard, longboard and SUP compete at the one event. Emma Webb, the current Australian Womens SUP Champion ran the day like clock work and with 50 plus competitors and 3 disciplines it took until 4pm to get through the heats and finals. Local surfer and surf instructor Heather Peck also took part in the event. Kristi came second in her first heat in the open womens SUP division, eleminating one of the top seeds from Qld Alison Fullagar who won the covetted Merimbula Classic ”Mambo”
competion the last 2 years running. This lead to a meeting in the final with Jenny Ryan from Qld who came 2nd in the Aussie titles last year. Kristi pounced on a wave less than one minute in and the dual began with both girls going toe to toe for 20 mins, exchanging rides with solid cutbacks in the clean conditons. At the end of the allowed time the girls could not be separated, it was a tie. After significant deliberation by the judges Kristi was awarded first place in the open womens division. When asked how she felt about winning Kristi said: “It really didnt matter if I won it was the best I have ever surfed and the most fun I have had in my life and thats what counts.”
