CITY NOD SHELL NOW IT’S UP TO THE FEDS AND STATE TO BACK PLAN GEELONG Council has backed plans to revolutionise Ocean Grove’s dilapidated sporting infrastructure, paving the way for local MPs and opposition candidates to make election year pledges. Both main parties have verbally supported the plan, unreservedly denouncing the poor state of facilities in
the Bellarine’s largest town. Council met last week and endorsed a master plan that will bring the senior football and cricket clubs to Shell Road. Local sports clubs have endorsed the plan which goes wider than Shell Road. The Voice was at City Hall to see the vote. Full story page 2.

Full support for sports plan GEELONG City Council has given the green light to the Shell Road sporting precinct. Approval for the Sports Infrastructure Plan was announced at the Geelong City Council meeting last Tuesday after receiving full support for the project from all the sporting clubs involved. Councillor and Ocean Grove representative, Jan Farrell has campaigned for the project since elected in 2004 and said that the project was overdue for the town. “It’s been a long process but we’ve delivered a plan that’s now been signed off by all the clubs and the wider Ocean Grove community.
I’m thrilled that we can now start to put this plan into action,” she said. “I would like to personally thank the local sporting clubs who have worked with us on developing the plan - we’ve had tremendous support from them.” The cost of the reserve is expected to be about $8 million with the expense to be split three ways between council, state and federal governments.
Council has shown the plans to Member for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman who is yet to pledge the much needed funds to the project. “His response was quite enthusiastic, however we are aware there is no commitment to funding yet,” said Cr Farrell. Described as the ‘Taj Mahal’ of clubrooms by Mayor John Mitchell, a detailed design of the precinct’s main building is included in this year’s council budget to be completed in the 2010-11 period. Council will continue to consult with the Ocean Grove sporting clubs to combat issues on clubroom management and cohabitation.

Locals rally for young Cody THE Ocean Grove Toy Library has rallied behind a local mum and her sick son, writes Carly Helweg. Ami Hodgkinson’s son Cody Strahan was diagnosed in 2009 with Extra Occular Retino Blastoma, an extremely rare eye cancer. As a single parent, Ami has had to take unpaid leave from her job to give her enough time to care for Cody and is now struggling to make ends meet. To help raise funds for the family, the Ocean Grove Toy Library has thrown its support behind Ami and organised a Family Fun Day fundraiser to be held provisionally on July 25 at the Ocean Grove Hotel. The day will include a silent auction, raffles and kids’ activities. Although Cody is currently receiving intensive chemotherapy treatment, Ami is confident he will be able to join in with the festivities on the day. Organisers are hoping to raise $10,000 however Ami says, “realistically anything will help me.” The money will be used to help pay for Cody’s treatment and medication as well as travel expenses to and from the Royal Children’s and Geelong Hospitals and mortgage repayments for the next six months. Having only moved from Melbourne to Ocean Grove three years ago, Ami said she was overwhelmed with the support relatively new friends and neighbours have given her. “I want to say what an amazing community Ocean Grove is,” she said. “I never expected it, people just rallied behind me.” Neighbours have put food in her freezer, fed dogs and looked after their home whilst Ami and Cody have had long stints in hospital and also helped to give Ami some time out for herself. “I’m just so grateful I ended up in Ocean Grove,” she said. For further information on the Family Fun Day, contact Jodi on 5254 2703.

The woman who has asked for privacy was initially taken to the Royal Melbourne in a critical condition. She was discharged from the Epworth Hospital on Thursday last week. Airborn for life CECILE ‘Boz’ Parsons trained in Tiger Moths in Narromine NSW in 1940, captained bombers that completed sorties over Berlin in the Second World War and now flies for pleaseure over the skies of the Bellarine. Boz is now also one of the oldest active pilots in the country. Boz, Cecil’s childhood nickname, bought his Ocean Grove house in 1965 and has now flown, the entire Australian
coastline with the exception of Esperance to Albany – although he has driven it. He flies out of Barwon Heads. Boz flew 2,000 military hours before changing direction. At other stages the 91-yearold has also been a farmer, schoolmaster and (airborne) outback postman in the Northern Territory. Asked whether he’s had any near misses in more than 3,000
civilian hours he has completed, he said: “No, not really.” So what does he put that down to? Flicking a pretend coin he says, “ a lot of chance, a lot of luck. It’s also being reasonably careful and competent and not taking risks. “It’s assessing the situation.” Boz flies his Piper Arrow out of Barwon Heads about once every fortnight. His wife Barbara, 89, will
often accompany him. A long time convert, she used to be less enthusiastic about his flying. Now they will – literally - take off up to the New South Wales coast to visit family. Boz, a former Geelong Grammar School teacher, has just released his biography Boz: Aviator, Farmer, Schoolmaster. The book was written by former Grammer school colleague Neville Clark.

Digging in for musical fork in town’s road AN ideal day in Ocean Grove? Definitely a full sensory experience. The view of the 10km stretch of sand from the lookout stairs was the original inspiration to start life here when we were expecting our first baby. The sight of smiley faces as everyone cheerily responds hello on morning runs along the river. Happy people that are as inspiring as the vision of a windgenerated “MusicArt” garden on the perfect community garden space as Tuckfield peels right into The Parade. Speaking of song, what would the Grove be without The Chicken Shop? John Bowman for PM. Not just good, they are great vibrations – ukuleles and sweet voices, surf music. Waves crashing, birds on spring mornings, cicadas to burst ear drums, kids chattering, mums and dads gasbagging at school pickup – more sounds of the good life. Trying to make tasteful choices – literally by eating locally, loving The Olive Pit and their gorgeous cheeses, Bolzano and of course everything about Elvis. Learning from my lovely husband how to grow a successful veggie garden; make that eight. Reducing food miles and helping create Clean Green Bellarine to pursue ideas like the monthly Harvestbasket, water reuse, tidal power and other renewable energy options. Chewing on overcommitment, to passionately pursue a 50m outdoor pool, and making friends through the Community Association (OGCA) and Community Enterprise (OGCE). Sniffing out possibilities with the (still) unused Fire Station – no joy with the outcome but good times trying. Enjoying the hint of winter woodsmoke in the wind from our friendly neighbours across the road (no smells but great chats with the other neighbours who let our kids trespass for lost balls). Salt air, no bullshit – that’s Ocean Grove. All we need is the deliciously pervasive odour of curry on the

Muffin’s on menu at local schools
Surfside Primary SENIOR students at Surfside Primary School are well on their way to becoming mini Master Chefs, writes Carly Helweg. The grade five and six students participated in an invention test where they were all given a basic muffin recipe and then had free rein to add their
own extra ingredients. The lesson taught the students kitchen safety, hygiene, culinary skills and even helped to improve their maths with use of fractions. Donna Barrot, a volunteer mum, comes to the school to help organise and run activities
like the cooking program. “Cooking is a life skill which Surfside students are gaining,” she said. “Along the way they’re also having fun, learning maths and reading all at the same time.” The students were unanimous when asked the best part of cooking
agreeing that tasting their cooking is the most enjoyable part. “I like getting to eat it afterwards,” said Jessie. Pictured right: Jessie, Kiara, Helene and Phoebe making the classic chocolate muffin with choc chip.
Christian College CHRISTIAN College studenbts organised a Biggest Morning Tea to help in the fight against cancer. Students in Year 8, as part of their Links electives, choose an organisation to study and assist either through spending time with, or raising funds for, the charity. Gabbi Church and Meg Hodgson (pictured left) opted to sell muffins and cookies to the students and staff at the Bellarine Campus. The girls had to decide firstly what to sell, then to place their order and make their purchase, and lastly having to individually wrap and label each muffin and cookie. “There was a massive pile to sort through” said Meg and after three-and-a-halfhours they had finally wrapped the last muffin. The girls raised over $200 for the charity.

Michael’s story A Rotary cultural exchange gave a Barwon Heads man more than just a month’s holiday overseas. Michael Cummins went to Sweden in 1993 to learn about the local Police Force and came home with valuable experience and friends he still meets with 17 years later. Michael said that seeing Sweden via a program like Rotary exchange meant he got to see a side of the country not commonly accessed by tourists. “The best bit was being introduced into the local workforce and local culture,” he said. His exchange then fed through to
a 12 month scholarship overseas thanks to the connections he had made through Rotary. “Once you start exposing yourself and making those contacts it opens so many doors later on.” More than a decade after the trip Michael still speaks of his experience fondly and enthusiastically encourages anyone with even the slightest interest to apply for the program. “A lot of people change careers but I think anyone who has a passion for their career now should make an application,” he said. “It reconfirms a passion for your job being exposed to that overseas environment.”

The Larsen Effect” from Torquay. Despite missing both their lead singer and rhythm guitarist, the band had a very clean solid sound. They describe themselves as “rock-ish” and the members there today were Immanuel Dreessens (Drums), Justin Estcort (Lead Guitar) and Ryland Vinton (Bass). This band is definitely worth looking out for in the future.
FESTA-FANTASTIC OCEAN Grove has stamped itself firmly on the musical map after a second successful open mic-style festival. The Queen’s birthday weekend festival attracted well over 100 acts and several hundred visitors who regularly filled the five official venues. Bar Deli, the Piping Hot Chicken Shop, Zebra Crossing, the Nectar Bar and Ocean Grove Hotel all staged full programs of music. Even the event of two power cuts on Friday night failed to deter musos who either went
acoustic under the lighting of i-phones or resumed with a casual 2-3-4 when the juice went back on. Kerri Maxwell from Bar Deli said: “What an amazing experience – well done Ocean Grove. You have shown people this is a great place to party and enjoy such talented musicians” Steve McEwan “It’s been a fantastic weekend. The venues have been full and the overall standard of the acts has been much better this year. It’s also been a good experience for many Bellarine Secondary
College students, who have been involved either as acts or sound technicians.” Claudia has been playing open mic in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads from its beginning. She performed as Naughty Nana and the Toy Boys at the Chicken Shop on Friday, Bar Deli on Saturday and the Ocean Grove Hotel on Sunday. “It’s been fantastic,’ she said while taking time off to watch other locals performing. “The crowd was great last night at Bar Deli. The crowds have been great for all the gigs – marvelous.
“Last year it was exciting because it was the first one. “This year I think the acts are better, that’s been across the board.” Claudia’s partner Rick Webb was one of the unsung heroes of the event, looking after the sound systems. What were your favourite acts of the festival? Email the Voice at news@ oceangrovevoice.com and we’ll feature them in our next edition. More pictures page 15.

Strange Brew. SIXTEEN-year-old Catherine Sanzaro (left) delivered another powerful performance at the festival. She was a member of the Sweethearts, while at Mathew Flinders, but has since moved to Bellarine High School. She is now composing her own music and lyrics, of which some are Stand and Fight, My Revolution, Wishing and Enough Already. She has a voice which can be quiet and soulful, while also hammering out those strong gutsy songs. Her set was interrupted by a blackout, yet she managed to carry on without the mike, strumming her guitar in the blackness. Isn’t it amazing to see how times have changed when the audience was giving her light by holding up their mobile phones . . I remember the days of lighters! At the very end Catherine sang Eva Cassidy’s “Songbirds”. What a pure voice this young lady has.

Rick dazzles
with new
menus
Developing exciting new menus: Club Grove’s new Head Chef, Ricky Monaghan.
Everyone is probably aware that the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove bowling club is now well underway. Whilst the construction work bears testament to the physical side of the redevelopment, many other changes are happening within the club – not the least of which is the appointment of new Head Chef, Ricky Monaghan. Rick joined Peter and Kate Crowley and the team at the end of May with his eye squarely on developing exciting new menus for the restaurant, café and functions which will all be part of the new Club Grove complex. Thirty year old Rick, was born and bred on the Bellarine Peninsula, and did his apprenticeship at the Gordon Institute in Geelong, and then completed a Diploma in Hospitality Management. During his apprenticeship, Rick worked at the Torquay Golf Club and Tousons
Restaurant in Geelong, before completing his time at the Lord of the Isles Tavern, rising to sous chef, then spending six years as head chef at the refurbished Carlton Hotel. The new career challenge, the opportunity to be involved in the design of a brand new kitchen, and the chance to be involved with a progressive, community minded club made the move to Club Grove a logical one. By drawing on his past experience and with a passion for fresh quality produce, Rick is looking to make his mark at Club Grove by adding his own touch and ideas to create modern stylish dishes. Along with Peter and the rest of the team, Rick is committed to ensuring that the Ocean Grove Bowling Club not only maintains its current status, but is recognised as the leading licensed Club in the state.
During the construction period, it is business as usual, with the Club offering some fantastic specials, both for lunch and dinner. For Rick, the completion of each stage of the redevelopment will be like a kid with a new toy, particularly when the new kitchen is operational. He hopes that during construction everyone ‘has a bit of a sticky’, at what will be a fantastic asset for not just the Bowling Club, but for the whole of Ocean Grove. Away from work, Rick and his young family are currently preparing to move into a new home on the peninsula. Whilst the move is taking most of his spare time, Rick still manages to catch up with family and friends, many of whom are you guessed it - chefs!, making home made pizza, enjoying a beer, pursuing his love of old cars and motor bikes, and occasionally even going back and helping out on his parents Curlewis farm.

The Nightbus operates every Saturday night (Sunday morning) and on special event nights, departing for Ocean Grove at 2.00 a.m. and 3.30 a.m., at a cost of $ 5.00 per person. It is encouraged to pre purchase tickets prior to travelling from a number of locations around the city and suburbs. There are five other routes and maps and timetables can be downloaded from www.centralgeelong. com.au. Thought for the month Be aware of the road rules operating re round-abouts. The first vehicle into the roundabout (not the car on the right) has right of way. Also speeding through round-abouts is a major problem, speed should be down to an appropriate level (20/30 kms).

environment
Birds of a different kind flock together THIS week's Nature Watch concerns the 'Straw Necked Ibis' and the 'Australian White Ibis'. Both species of Ibis are prominent in Ocean Grove. I just thought that it was curious that in observing flocks of Ibis there seemed to be intermingling between both species, which seemed unusual to me, but after reading about the birds, intermingling is common! I've written about the Australian White Ibis previously. It is a large bird (up to 75 cms long) with a bald
black head and neck, and a long curved black beak. The Australian White Ibis is found throughout most of Australia in all but the driest habitats. They haven't found their way to Tasmania yet, as they haven't thought to hitch a ride on the ferry. They live in swamps, lagoons, grasslands, urban parks and gardens. In some areas this breed of Ibis is considered to be a pest because they forage in rubbish and can be quite smelly, in fact in some areas of Sydney they have been culled! The Australian White Ibis population living at Healesville Sanctuary were
relocated to Sale in Victoria because they were pinching sandwiches out of people's hands, but they returned in a few days. Just goes to show that you can't keep a good Ibis down for too long! The Straw-necked Ibis is also found throughout Australia. They are large birds, growing to 75 cms in length. They have dark wings that are multicoloured in the sunlight, a bit like a mother of pearl sheen. Their feathers are quite beautiful. They have a dark coloured back and collar. Most of the neck is white, as are the underparts and under-tail. They have a long, black, downcurved bill, and their legs are usually red near the top and dark grey toward the feet.
The adults have straw-like feathers on the neck which give the bird its name. The Straw Necked Ibis is found in most areas of Australia plus parts of Tasmania, so either they are stronger fliers compared to the Australian White Ibis to have negotiated the Bass Strait, or they did manage to hitch a ride on the ferry one night! This breed of Ibis is not found in heavily populated urban areas, and they inhabit shallow freshwater wetlands, cultivated pastures, edges of swamps and lagoons, and wet or dry grasslands. I've seen them frequently at Oakdene, so they are very discerning! They are nomadic in that they move around to different areas to source food. Especially in the summer they can be seen flying around for hours in large flocks, circling Ocean Grove.
They do not scavenge for food compared to the Australian White Ibis. Their more conventional diet consists of insects, molluscs, frogs, grasshoppers, crickets, locusts, lizards and other small reptiles. They are often called the Farmer's Friend because they feed on pests that would otherwise eat farm crops. It's nice to know that the Straw Necked Ibis won't be culled as they are actually useful to humans! Both breeds of Ibis roost in trees. They look quite magnificent when they are balancing at the top of trees. looking down on us mere mortals. They build nests in trees and in the reeds around wetlands, and tend to breed in the same habitat year after year. It is common for both species of Ibis to be living together in the one colony. I wonder if they interbreed or if they just mate with the same species. Very interesting. By Jennifer Carr

BARWON COAST
Barwon Coast your local coastal foreshore manager has the responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from Collendina to Blue Rocks including our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. We are also the manager of the Port of Barwon Heads and operate two large coastal caravan parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park and the Riverview Family Caravan Park, Ocean Grove plus the Riverside Camping area. Award finalists At the recent Victoria Coastal Awards our Community Connections education program was a finalist in the Education category won by Phillip Island Nature Parks - Coastal Ambassadors Program. Pleasingly we have just received advice that the Ocean Grove Beach has been selected as a finalist in the Keep Australia Beautiful Victorian Clean Beaches Awards – Friendly beach category, focussing on the Disabled Surfers Association use of the all abilities ramp that enables the aquatic wheelchairs to gain beach access for their events. Centre Toilet Block, Ocean Grove Barwon Coast has commenced its largest ever self funded project with the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Main Beach amenity block. This project is the last major component of the Ocean Grove Main beach redevelopment project commenced a decade ago. (see below) A tender from local builders Burchell Constructions P/L has been accepted with completion within 100 working days ie before the 2010/11 summer. The overall project cost including demolition and relocation of services will be close to $1million funded thru the successful operations of our two major caravan parks in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. No contribution from the local community, nor the municipality is required to deliver this substantial infrastructure development that will serve the growing population of Ocean Grove and increasing numbers of visitors. The existing amenity block constructed in 1978 has been demolished and will be replaced with a new facility on a smaller footprint using environmentally sustainable products and reduced energy inputs. Best practice building design standards will be applied in regard to water and energy conservation. For example rainwater will be collected and stored in a 100,000 litre underground tank and should provide for 70% of the peak season water used for toilet flushing. The building design aims to maximise the natural lighting of the internal areas whilst providing facilities in line with current numbers. The immediate area around the building will be lowered and the building moved inland by over 5 metres.
The new building being set lower in the landscape will be of a reduced impact on the environment through its design and specification parameters as well as its repositioned siting. Although Barwon Coast and the builders will work together to minimise the interruptions to beach users during the construction period, there will obviously be some inconvenience for a period of up to 6 months. Three temporary toilets have been located adjacent to the construction site. A decade of redevelopment at Ocean Grove beach The initial major component of the project was the relocation of the Surf Beach Road back from the centre of the coastal reserve to the very rear of the reserve linking up to Presidents Ave and the Ocean Grove – Barwon Heads Rd Having moved the road to the back of the reserve , Barwon Coast then redeveloped all the car parking facilities thereby ensuring that all car parks were on the ocean side of the road reducing previous safety concerns of beach goes having to cross the road. The car parks developed include a range of grassed areas to be used as overflow car parks in summer, this design reducing the bitumen footprint in the area. These works were followed by the development of the extensive mounding and vegetation planting delivering the current soft visual aspect of the redevelopment In the past 2 years a $1.2m investment in replacing the seawall and promenade as a joint funded project with the State Government has ensured the ongoing access to the main beach and protection of the Surf Beach complex including the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club. Barwon Coast has funded the construction of an access ramp onto the beach to ensure access is available to people of all abilities and as consequence of such access the Disabled Surfers Association has run several beach events drawing hundreds of participants and supporters. Newest soccer side kicks off in Grove SPRINGDALE soccer team has kicked off its first season, playing at home on Shell Oval. The new side - from the north of Bellarine - does also boast a few familiar faces. Several of the team played in Surfside Waves’ third team last year. However, this season Waves just went for two senior sides and that left a few soccer players game hungry. So the launch of two new Springdale sides playing out of the Grove was a perfect alternative. The side has enjoyed some early success in the third division and given a few locals some regular Sunday afternoon soccer.

Renee picked for state OCEAN GROVE resident Renee Zebic is making waves of the Soccer kind. The former Surfside Waves junior has been selected to play in the Victorian Under 17 Girls State Squad at the 2010 FFA National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour next month. It has been a remarkable turnaround for the gifted 16-year-old, who plays with Box Hill in the Women’s Premier League, following a serious knee setback after a tragic pre-season training mishap in South Melbourne in 2009. Renee subsequently required a full knee reconstruction and was not able to run or touch a soccer ball for more than six months. Fast forward to April 2010, the teenage star is back with a vengeance and is currently playing an integral role as right midfield for Box Hill. “I had the whole year off last year because I had a full knee reconstruction, so I missed out last year in trying for state representation,” Renee said.
“So coming back this year just being able to play soccer with my knee being alright was awesome, but then making state squad was amazing.” When not playing soccer, the committed teenage star is busy commuting on the train between Geelong and Melbourne, sometimes up to four times a week. “I spend way too much time on trains, it is ridiculous,” she laughs. Her desire to play in the best possible league and willingness to travel is seen as one of Renee’s best traits. In 2008, Renee travelled to Brazil as part of a training camp with her former club Doncaster. Surfside Waves Soccer Club president Mark Rapa said the entire Ocean Grove soccer community should be proud of Renee’s on-field achievements. Rapa, an assistant coach of the Geelong Under 14 team,
coaches Renee’s younger brother Ben, 12, at Geelong. “I first came across Renee at aged 12,” Zapa said. “She was the first person down at training and she always had a soccer ball at her feet. “Her skill level was exceptional at an early age.” Renee harbours ambitions to pull on the green and the gold guernsey in the future and has an instant role model in Melissa Barbieri, the Matildas’ captain and Australian goalkeeper. Renee is also a teammate of Barbieri at Box Hill. “She (Melissa Barbieri) is awesome to listen to and has been great for my career,” she said. Renee is prepared to endure some sleepless nights ahead in front of the couch, as the Men’s team the Socceroos do battle at the World Cup in South Africa. While she prefers to support the Socceroos, her mother’s Italian origins means Renee will keep a close eye on Italy’s progress.
Former Waves soccer player Renee Zebic has made the under 17 state side.
Italy won the FIFA World Cup in 2006 in Germany. Unfortunately her father’s origins won’t be represented as Croatia failed to qualify for the World’s biggest showpiece
sporting event. “My mum always goes for Italy, well Croatia didn’t make this year so that problem is solved, and there is Australia,” Renee said.
Outside of Soccer, Renee is a Year 11 student at Bellarine Secondary College and is keen to pursue a career as a Physical Education teacher.

New Ocean Grove Cricket Club senior coach - Lucas Cameron
OCEAN GROVE Cricket Club has appointed their new senior coach for the 2010/11 season, Lucas Cameron, writes Mark Heenan. Cameron is also joined by Michael Gill, who takes over as assistant coach of the Grubbers for the new season. Cameron and Gill, formerly of the Highton Heat Cricket Club, were elected at the Grubbers’ Annual General Meeting last month. Ocean Grove President Lucas
Baulch was pleased with the new signings. “That is the soonest we have appointed in the last five to six years, so it is good to have a clear direction for the new season,” Baulch said. The club is hoping for a better showing for the 2010/11 season after their A-Grade team finished in ninth place. Baulch confirmed their preseason would commence in early August.

Great ‘Cobra style footy’ on the ovals
Under 10 Blue vs Sth Barwon Bulldogs On a fresh and cool Saturday morning it was good to be back playing at the Snake Pit against South Barwon Bulldogs. In a low scoring game, big man Logan Taylor played a ripper of a game either up forward where he kicked 2 great goals or down back stopping the Bulldogs from scoring. He was well supported by all his team mates especially Will Owen who was always at the bottom of the packs feeding the ball out,Hamish McManus who continually broke the lines and kicked long and Jack Havis who picked up many possessions around the ground and giving the ball off to his team mates. Great Effort Blues Cobras Blue 2.9-21 South Barwon Bulldogs 2.3-15 Goals: L Taylor 2 Best: L Taylor, J Havis, W Owen, H McManus Cobras Under 10 Blue Round 8 vs Cobras Orange In very windy conditions at the Snake Pit it was Cobras Blue v Cobras Orange in a high standard game of junior football. It was mate v mate and everyone on the field wanted that ball so badly. Great roving from a ball up saw Angus Benson slot through the first goal of the day. The second quarter was a real arm wrestle with Blues kicking 2 goals and Orange kicking 3. Third quarter and the Orange boys played as a team kicking 2 goals into the strong wind and keeping the Blue team scoreless. Final quarter and it was a real slog as every player put their body on the line for their team mates. Orange kicked the first for the quarter and they were up and about. Then the Blues worked the ball forward and when Ninja Pearson picked up the ball along the boundary and took a run and bounce and kicked a great banana goal it was only 2 points the difference, Orange in front. With only minutes left Jack Havis worked hard and kicked the ball short to Jake Powe who marked strongly in front of goal. He kicked the ball straight through the middle and the Blues held on for a great victory. A fantastic game of Footy from two really good teams and it was great to see both
teams sing the Cobras song as one. An excellent game from the Blues and the Orange Cobras teams. Blues 7.3-45 Orange 6.5-41 Goals: N Pearson 2, A Benson 1, T Richardson 1, J Dynes 1, L Hart 1, J Powe 1. Best: N Pearson, M Stanic, F Drayton, C McEvoy. Under 12 Orange Round 8 vs St Albans Saints It was a cold, dark and wet Friday night under lights in which the Cobras found themselves up against a very strong and determined St Albans side. Led out and inspired by captains Jacob Bond and Zane Leist, the Cobras played some good team footy. The boys got jumped on the score board early but matched the Saints for the rest of the game. Big Joel Ness played out of his skin again with a ferocious attack on the ball. Jackson (Jacko) Peters didn’t let a week of illness get in his way as he got in the packs and forced the ball out time and time again and it was great to see Cobra newcomer Jesse Sherwell show off some of his tough nut spirit. Joe Smith is really starting to shine with clever thinking and silky skills as is Blake (Schwarter) Schwartz. Lachlan (muffin) Smith impressed again with courage and massive 2nd + 3rd efforts. Great to see Oliver Monteith and Ben Pickering amongst the goals again after some real Cobra style footy this week. Cobras 2.2.14 Saints 9.10.64 Best: J.Smith, L.Smith, J.Sherwell Goals: O.Monteith, B.Pickering Under 12 Orange Round 9 vs Leopold Lions Round 9 saw a home game played at Ervin Reserve against a much hyped Leopold Lions side. Lachlan Taylor and birthday boy Tom Smith were given the big job of captaining the side this week and certainly showed their fighting spirit all match. Once again the Cobras were slow out of the box and the Lions took a good lead. Joe Smith, Jacob Bond and Lachlan Gawley Price all played great footy and were helped out well by fast man Riley Featherby repelling attack after attack. Zane Leist was instrumental in a massive last quarter team effort which saw the
Cobras under 10 White line up ahead of their game against Queencliff Coutas at Point Lonsdale.
Cobras u10 White press forward against the Coutas. Cobras claw back a bit with Jacko slotting a ripper despite some heavy knocks to the head and Craig (Magoo) Goodger putting one over his shoulder to see the man in the white coat have some two flag action. The Cobras certainly played the game out well and stuck to our team rules. Cobras 2.5.17 Lions 13.15.93 Best: O.Monteith, Z.Leist, J.Smith Goals: J.Peters, C.Goodger Under 12 Cobras Blue Round 8 Vs Grovedale Roar The Cobras Blue were at Belmont Common for their round eight clash against Grovedale Roar. Led by Spencer Luppino and Sam Quigley, the Cobras came out to play. Georgia Rodgers playing off the bench in the 1st quarter had an immediate impact on the game with her usual determination and natural ability and kicking a fantastic goal. Fletcher Sharrock played a great game with some strong marks, clever handballs and kicking a goal, helping the Cobras to increase their
lead in the second half. Sam Quigley attacked the ball on the wing in the 3rd quarter delivering it to the leading Cobras forwards. With some great passages of play and team orientated footy, the Cobras had a 57 point victory. Goal Kickers: Kyle Ewart 1, Spencer Lappino 1, Darcy Pearson 2, Georgia Rodgers 1, Fletcher Sharrock 1, Michael Smith 1, Liam Warren 1 and Austin Wilcox 1. Best Players: Georgia Rodgers, Fletcher Sharrock and Sam Quigley. OGCC Blue 11-12-78 Grovedale Roar 3-3-21 Under 12 White Round 8 vs St Albans Black A slow start from the Cobras saw the Saints go into the long break with a very comfortable lead. In a total form reversal in the 2nd half, the Cobras put on a fantastic display of hard chasing, tackling and pressure only to run just short with some bad luck and inaccurate kicking in front of goal. Cobras 6.12.48 St Albans 9.7.61
Best: B.Allan, J.Calliguri, B.Hamilton, K.Meyer, H.Milne, W.Townson Goals: B.Gist, O.Hollmer, K.Lattarulo, R.Maloney, W.Townson, N.Weatherly Under 12 White Round 9 vs St Albans White An amazing 3 goals in the last 5 minutes of the 2nd quarter against a strong wind saw the Cobras go into the long break just in front of St Albans. Inaccurate kicking by the Cobras kept St Albans in the game in the 3rd term but the Cobras regrouped in the last and came out hard. Strong tackling, smothering and pressure at every contest saw the Cobras restrict them to just 2 late goals. Despite the cold and windy conditions it was a very entertaining game of football. Cobras 7.6.48 St Albans 6.6.42 Best: B.Gist, R.Maloney, K.Lock, N.Wetherly, J.Synott, K.Lattarulo Goals: B.Gist 3, W.Townson 2, R.Maloney, N.Weatherly Cobras Under 14 (1) Round 8 vs Winchelsea An 8 goal opening quarter blitz set us up for a demolition of Winchelsea 16 19 115 to 0 0 0. Our discipline to team structures over 4 quarters and our efficient ball movement into the forward line were features of our win. Jed Evans was excellent in the ruck giving first use of the ball to a dominant midfield of Che Durran, Josh Prendergast, James Teague and Christian West. Forwards Nick Anastassiou,
Miles Henderson and Luke Bastiaan moved well into space and anything they missed was mopped up by the dangerous Zac Dynes and Lachlan Barber. It was good to see Brayden Warren clunking his marks and proving impenetrable at centre half back. Goalkickers Nick Anastassiou 5, Zac Dynes, Miles Henderson and Luke Bastiaan 3 each. Lachlan Barber and James Stirling 1 each. Cobras Under 14 (1) Round 9 vs. Torquay (2) We came away from the big Torquay ground with a resounding win 8 6 54 to 1 1 7.
Zaine Cordy, Che Durran and Miles Henderson were all dangerous in attack. Brayden Warren and Harry Walker were resolute in defence. Josh Kehagias played a blinder, throwing himself into contest after contest. Jake Taylor and Jack Ness both impressed after coming into the side from good performances in the seconds. Our depth was tested and everybody came through with flying colours. Goalkickers - Luke Bastiaan and Miles Henderson 2 each. Che Durran, Jed Evans, Nat Gravener and Christian West 1 each.

It was good to see Lynell Dungen back on the court after being sidelined with a heel injury, she did some good setting for her
team and some blocking on the net. Good to see the heel is much better. Robert Dungen did some really awesome blocking on the net and some fantastic backline spikes to make it a close game for his team. 6 Pact were probably thinking it was going to be an easy game but it just goes to show what determination does with a team. 6 Pact were without their top hitters in Harrison Foott and Steve Thomas but Daniel Kuklych did a great job for his team and paired up with his father who did some fantastic blocking to help his son with the spiking. Father and son combination worked really well tonight. Only 1 more week till the Victorian Country Championships. Stay tuned for a report on how the Ladies team did and the men’s team performed. Hopefully the men can get a trophy. Come on boys you don’t want the Ladies showing you up do you?

U20 Boys v Southern Peninsula Pivotal game, we needed to start strong & make Southern Penn chase us. We opened the game with some nice 3 point shots from Jack Hobbs & Mitchell Kennedy. Offensively we are still not executing the sets that we have but managed to get to a 30 - 16 score at halftime. Curtis Jones & Mitch Kennedy did some great work to shut down their biggest player on the court. As a result of the strong team defence we continued to score well, with some handy baskets from Jake Barton, Chris Dedini &
Brad Armstrong eventually running out winners 56 40. A great team win. Top Scorers: Jack Hobbs 17pts, Brad Armstrong 14pts, Mitch Kennedy 10pts. This is the fourth team that has held 1st place on the ladder that Bellarine have beaten in the last few weeks. We are now equal 2nd & managing to establish a reputation as a hard to beat team who play dogged defensive & score frequently. The boy’s skills are impressive but will get more results if we can execute the offensive sets. Well done guys. Michelle Atkins U20 Coach U20 Girls v Ringwood
The u/20 girls travelled to Ringwood quietly confident they would make in roads to what has been a hard season. The girls matched Ringwood for all but the final 2.48 of the game and showed a lot of grit and fight all night. Co captain Melissa Higgins had a big night offensively and was backed beautifully by Emily Holahan, Meagan Stuart and defensive minded Cassie Syddall." We cannot make the play offs but this team will have a huge say in who does and every team is very aware of what we are capable of" said the coach, Bob Parker.

PLAYER PROFILE Maddison Traynor
Maddison started playing with Ocean Grove Netball Club in 2008 in the under 13 team at Peninsula. The next year she played Under 13 Div 2 at Kardinia on a Friday night. This year Maddie is in the Ocean Grove Under 13 Div 1 team as bottom age. Maddie has also represented the BDNA Under 11 and this year Under 13 B side.
Good signs at halfway WE are now halfway through the season. This gives us all a chance to reflect on the season so far and see where we are at. Tracey has been really pleased with all the Senior girls enthusiasm and attitude each week. It has been a fairly slow start to the season but there are signs of improvement with good numbers at training, better team play and the indications are there that we are not far off beating some of the teams above us. Finals particularly for A Grade are well within their reach. Bron has been pleased with the positive attitude of the C and D grade girls. They lack a bit of height but they are having fun and enjoying their netball. The new netballers are working hard on their skills and are improving every week. Our Junior girls have 5 out of 7 teams in the top 4 of each of their grades. Our 15 & Under division one team remain undefeated. Keep up the hard work girls, train hard and focus on one week at a time and that hard work will stand you in good stead for the latter part of the season. Thank you A big thank you to the players and parents who help out at the Club each week. In particular the junior girls who have been manning the canteen at home matches and to the parents who also volunteer to cook the barbeque. A big thank you from the Committee.

This team is starting to provide strong forward leads, using front cuts and rolls. All players are rotating regularly and taking the opportunity to both attack and defend, extending both their experiences
and skill levels. This team has the majority of possession and use court systems well. The limiting issue at present is the lower percentage of goal accuracy. Recent goals have been scored by Ellie, Shannon, Hannah, Emma and Eliza. Keep up the endeavour and commitment and the results will follow. – Coach: Megan Blake-Uren 15 & Under Div 4 4/6/10 – Bye 11/6/10 – OG 5 v Newtown 10 Best: Clementine Proud, Maddie Maroney. The girls played a good defensive game in cold conditions. After not playing for 3 weeks it took a while for the girls to get going but they are working out a few systems. They have a great attitude and never give up. – Coach: Jenny Peatling 13 & Under 4/6/10 OG 7 v Grovedale 39 Best: Sophie Spowart, Sarah Gillingham, Sarah Bastiaan 11/6/10 OG 5 v Newtown 34 Best: Abbey Badrock, Michaela Giblin, Hannah Attard Even though the girls are getting beaten each week their game is improving consistently, the opposition this week were particularly tall. Our girls did really well to keep the ball moving down the court quickly and using speed and good passes to get around the tall opposition. –Coach: Sally Bambrook VPSSA Netball Team –Maddison Traynor
Congratulations to Maddison Traynor who has made the Victorian Primary Schools Sports Association Netball team. Maddie has completed several weeks of trials and is only one of two girls selected in the team from the country regions. Maddie will be training at the State Netball Centre in Royal Park before participating in the National Championships in Canberra from 9th – 15th October. It has been a great achievement by Maddie considering she fractured her arm earlier in the year and has only played two games so far for Ocean Grove. Maddison started playing with Ocean Grove Netball Club in 2008 in the under 13 team at Peninsula and the next year played Under 13 Div 2 at Kardinia on a Friday night. This year Maddie is in the Ocean Grove Under 13 Div 1 team as bottom age. Maddie has also represented the BDNA Under 11 and this year the Under 13 B side. school netball SAINT Ignatius College sent a large netball contingent of keen junior girls to participate in the Geelong Independent Schools Sports Association (GISSA) netball competition at Geelong Grammar School recently. Due to the continued increase in student numbers at the college, four very competitive netball teams this year were entered into the competition. Other aspiring netball teams included those from Geelong Grammar, Christian CollegeGeelong & Bellarine, Kardinia International College, Geelong Covenant College and Geelong Baptist College.
Over the last few years, the netball teams that Saint Ignatius College have fielded have continued to become increasingly stronger, as confirmed by the results, which is an excellent sign for the future of netball at Saint Ignatius College. All four Saint Ignatius teams made it to the finals, with three of them coming home with the winner’s trophy! Ms Stacey Learmonth, Netball Coordinator at the College, was delighted with the performance and she was also impressed with the girls as they demonstrated wonderful team spirit and excellent sportsmanship. The following girls won the

OCEAN GROVE still remains on track for a finals berth in the BFL Buckley’s Reserves competition, despite a 24-point loss to ladder leader Drysdale. Final scores Drysdale 11.7.73 defeated Ocean Grove 6.13.49. The Grubber seconds occupy fifth position with six wins, three
losses and a thrilling draw against Torquay in Round nine. Reserves playing coach, Kane Montgomery is pleased with
the Grubbers’ progress at the midway point of the 2010 season. “We have developed well actually, at the start of the year I was hoping we would have been in the Top five at the turn (by the middle of the season),” Montgomery said. “We had a good draw against
quality opposition (in Torquay) in Round 9.” Meanwhile, Drysdale 8.13.61 continued their dominance over Ocean Grove 7.6.48 in the Under 18’s to win by 13 points. It was only the young Grubbers, who have an 8-2 record, second loss for the season.

IT WAS a case of master versus the apprentice on Saturday at Drysdale. Reigning BFL premiers Drysdale 21.12.138 proved their finals credentials and why it is such a formidable opposition easily accounting for the inexperienced Ocean Grove 8.12.60 winning by 78 points. Points wise, it is the Grubbers worst loss in 2010 and the first time they have lost two in a row this season. It follows the team’s disappointing 21-point defeat to Torquay in Round nine. Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor, who remained measured post-match, agreed his side were no match for the far more superior Hawks. “There is no doubt we are not in the same class as Drysdale, we copped injuries, we had things go against us, but the scoreboard probably didn’t do us justice at the same time as well,” he said. “We have got a long way to improve to be a finals side.” Drysdale rebounding defender
Brett Dowie and leading ruckman Daniel Gage stood out in the comprehensive win for the Hawks. Of more a concern for Ocean Grove is their growing injury toll. Promising youngster Tom McManus (corked thigh) and swashbuckling defender Ryan Baker (hamstring) lost their battle with injury only moments into the match. McManus and Baker join playing assistant Rowan O’Callaghan (season ending leg injury), Sam Van Deuren (hamstring), Callum Jones, Ben Wilkinson and Wayde Piec (hamstring) on the sidelines. “The thing that is hurting us is we are copping injuries in the first quarter of games and we’re down to 19 to 20 fit guys for the game,” McGregor said. “We had 18 fit guys in that last quarter.” The Drysdale Recreation Reserve has not been a happy hunting ground for Ocean Grove in
recent times, last year the Hawks annihilated the Grubbers by 92 points. “The (losses) are both very similar, it is just an empty feeling, I’m at a bit of a loss to explain what happened and why,” Ocean Grove captain James Dalton said after the match. The Grubbers will now turn its focus towards Modewarre at Ocean Grove in Round 11, a must win game for the home side if it wants to participate in this year’s BFL finals. Sixth-placed Ocean Grove now sit two games outside the top five. Dalton said there will be plenty of motivation at stake, as the Grubbers will host a 10-year reunion in honour of their 2000 senior premiership on Saturday. “It has got to be a massive incentive not to put in a performance like we did against Drysdale, otherwise the club will be pretty hard on us,” Dalton said. Game starts at 2:10pm on Saturday at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve.

GROVE FACE MUST WIN CLASH WITH MODE’ THIS WEEKEND
GROVE will need all the support they can muster when they host Modewarre at home this Saturday. Cam McGregor’s young side has already shown they have the metal to make the finals but they need to pull together for four quarter footy for the rest of the season if they are going to progress beyond the home and aways. The injury ravaged side could also do with a large slice of luck, with no less than seven of the squad either sidelined during last Saturday’s tough Drysdale clash or nursing longer term knocks and strains. The bounce is 2.10pm. Drysdale reports pages 28-31
