=I

Ocean magazine, together with Naish Surfing, had the incredible pleasure of sitting down with Naish board rider, MANCA NOTAR. A true leader and inspiration in the world of women’s sports and athletics, Manca has proved that with a lot of dedication, passion and perseverance, you can set out to explore and create wondrous adventures and find that perfect sport designed just for you. It didn’t take us long to fall in love with her story.

=I

You’ve got a really diverse, water-related background, as a stand-up paddler, a windsurfer, and kitesurfer. Can you tell us about when you first got your feet wet and decided to pursue a lifestyle in water sports? My parents once told me I was “lucky I wasn’t born in the ocean” because they were extremely active & passionate windsurfers who were always on the water. When I was a mere 2 years old, I always pretended to rig my father’s windsurf equipment because I was so amazed by the setup process! It didn’t take long before I tried my first windsurf rides when I was 6 in Dahab, Egypt. After that, I got my own equipment and I was hooked (and rigging my own gear!). A few years later I also started kiteboarding. Unfortunately, Slovenia isn’t a country with a lot of wind and ocean waves, so you can imagine there wasn’t much opportunity for me to windsurf or kiteboard… so when SUP came to Europe, I fell in love with it immediately! When did you start Stand up paddling & when did the butterflies in your stomach tell you this was the sport for you? How did it all “click”? I started Stand up paddling when I was 14 years old. After visiting a lot of windsurfing and kitesurfing spots throughout Europe, I began to realize that there weren’t many girls who did all three sports. I realized I really wanted to help promote these sports among my peers, so I decided to write to Robby Naish. I will never forget the moment when I received a response from Naish-it was the happiest day of my life! Then, everything started happening really fast. I entered my first international SUP race in South France where I

won using my Naish Nalu SUP board, while all the other competitors raced on actual race boards. I received a lot of positive feedback from everyone after this race and it helped me realize that I could go on to feed my thirst for competition. I guess that’s where it all began! Way to make a statement in 2013! Looking back, what was your favorite racing experience? What did you gain from it? Thanks! It was such an amazing season and each race was really something special. I began the year in the most extreme conditions I’ve ever experienced in Abu Dhabi at the Stand Up World Series sprint races, where there was 35 knots of wind, endless sand storms and super high temperatures. It definitely set the bar and helped prepare me for upcoming competitions! My favorite racing experience, however, was definitely the Molokai2Oahu

race, which I did in tandem with Naish teammate and friend, Michi Schweiger. After racing, I heard a rumor that it was the hardest race in the last 10 years because of the tropical storm! It was a totally new experience for me and I learned a lot about the ocean and also about myself. I’m beyond honored and proud that I’m now known as the youngest European girl who ever paddled the “Channel of Bones”.

Were there any races you wanted to enter, but couldn’t for whatever reason? At the beginning of the racing season my father (who also helps me with my training as he was involved in ski racing) and I made a list of races for me to enter. I had planned to go to the Chicago SUWS, but I was too tired to fly back to the USA again so soon after the Molaki2Oahu race. I also really wanted to compete in the Battle of The Paddle, but after

=I much discussion, we felt I didn’t have enough experience, so I decided to hold off until I was more prepared. I fulfilled most of my list, so I’m still really proud of myself!

Will you be entering those competitions in 2014? I hope so! They are on my list… What are some of your 2014 resolutions? SUP & Personal (so we can get to know you a bit more)… I want to seize every day, do excellent in school, claim a spot on as many podiums as I can, and of course, have fun! How was your recent holiday trip to Maui? How did you spend most of your days? It was really fun and special because it was my first Christmas without snow! I had pretty bad jet lag, so I woke up at 5 am every morning. It all worked out though because I was able to get in the water at the crack of dawn and get in tons of training, regardless of what my coach said! Every day I was kitesurfing waves, learning how to surf on a variety of Naish SUP boards - and I even got to test some new Naish racing boards. I’m super excited to race on them this year! My stay on Maui wouldn’t have been so amazing if it wasn’t for my teammates and friends - I had so much fun spending time with them and learning something new from them, I can’t wait to go back! How does training on Maui differ from training in Slovenia? The difference is like day and night … when people on Maui are sleeping, I’m training; and when

people on Maui are training, I’m sleeping At home I do a lot of flat water training in both warm and cold weather conditions. I really enjoy the change of seasons & conditions because they help make me an even better paddler! When I’m on Maui, I really enjoy doing downwind runs and beach workouts because it’s so different from how I train at home. I’m almost never indoors when I’m on Maui! What is your training schedule like? My dad is also my coach and he always plans out my training routines carefully, making sure it’s always something special. This also has the advantage that we get plenty of family time together. I never visit fitness centers, all the workouts I do are outdoors in nature. Do you have an all-time favorite hobby (either on or off the water) that you can’t live without? I really like windsurfing and kitesurfing, but if there is no wind and I don’t have time to SUP, I take my camera and try to take some shots of special moments in my life. How do you find time to travel all over the world for training and competitions and maintain your impressive grades in school? It’s not always easy managing school with my training and race schedule, but I’m doing my best. I always make time to learn when I have free time and I really try to remember as much as I can. When I’m traveling to races or trainings, I always have my studies out so I can learn new things in the car or

=I

airplane. I will never forget my 10 hour long trip to my first SUP race in France - I was doing equations the whole way because I had a test scheduled the same day I arrived back home. Thankfully I received a good grade! I always find time for school and training, but unfortunately, the day only has 24 hours and I cannot do everything. To get to where I am and keep progressing, I’ve had to give up some things to make my dreams come true, which is why I’ve lost some friends along the way…but this is what I’ve chosen as my way of life and I absolutely love it! Who do you enjoy following and watching in the SUP world today? I definitely enjoy following all my Naish teammates! What’s your favorite “go-to” Naish gear? When I’m training on flat water, I use the Javelin 12’6” LE and for downwind conditions (which are very rare in Slovenia) I use the Javelin 14’0” LE. I really like it because it reminds me of my time during the Molokai2Oahu race. If there are ever some fun waves, I’ll take my Hokua. What was your favorite lesson learned from 2013? Least favorite? I learned that 32 miles is a long way to paddle! I also learned to always believe in myself. My least favorite lesson - to never set my sights on the finish line because it might move at anytime.

As we’re always looking for that perfect and quick skin fix, we fill our beauty closets with products galore and book in for whatever the latest, most promising skincare treatments that might be trendy and all the rave at the moment. The Lancer Dermatology experience is entirely different. Based on the concept of treating your skin from the inside out and the outside in, on your very first consult visit, you receive a total-body analysis of the current state of your health, as well as your family history of health, and your ancestry. In order to most effectively choose a skin care regimen, as well as any treatments or procedures, Dr. Lancer wants to have a full understanding of how the patient’s skin will respond under the given circumstances. From there, Dr. Lancer likes to exfoliate the skin with a microdermabrasion treatment and maybe some oxygen or LED therapy to give

cellular turnover a boost. It’s no wonder that Dr. Lancer is a favorite among loyal celebrities!

INNOVATION The understanding that the appearance of your skin is rooted in much more than just topical treatments is a crucial difference between Lancer Dermatology and other doctors in the industry. Dr. Lancer champions diet, exercise and lifestyle over nearly any invasive or semi-invasive procedures. Total body wellness is the true key to glowing skin. After that, daily exfoliation is the next best secret weapon to get skin glowing.

WHAT WE LOVE Get instant radiance with the clinic’s microdermabrasion of the face, neck and chest, and our nourishing placenta facial.

Spring Skin Care must-haves and must-do’s? Spring skin care must have #1 is sunscreen! After the colder and darker months of winter, your skin is especially prone to sun damage. Applying a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, 15 minutes prior to any sun exposure will keep you protected. Remember to reapply every two hours if your in direct sunlight!

Best Skincare advice for in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s up? In your 20’s protection is your best friend. Skin is still young and can repair itself quickly, so now is the time to prevent damage that will accumulate in future years. Your 30’s are when you ought to start fighting the emerging signs of aging like fine lines, sun damage, and uneven

texture in addition to looking at your lifestyle and how that may be contributing to the aging process. Daily exfoliation paired with a product containing retinol or glycolic acid will help reverse these common signs of aging. For patient’s in their 40’s and beyond, exfoliation, retinols, AHAs and super-rich moisturizers are all your friends. It always helps to be aware of the amount of sodium and sugar you are consuming as those will both pull moisture away from the skin’s surface.

BE IN THE KNOW Be aware of any medications you’re taking, both topically and internally, and be ready to talk about your day-to-day habits - what you eat, when you sleep, how much time you spend outdoors, if you travel

frequently, if you are happy etc etc. It’s important to know that even if you do have some bad habits (we all do) not to hide these from your doctor as they can impact the efficacy and recovery time of treatments.

COMPLETE COMPLEXION:

This Spring’s Must-Have, Must-Try Facial

Spring is a perfect time to begin to re-illuminate your skin. Having succumbed to the elements during Winter, many of us are left with a dry, dull and lackluster complexion. Why not multi-task your skincare regimen with a high-impact treatment that packs a powerful anti-aging and healthy skin punch. Beauty insiders and Hollywood A-listers alike, have been drawn to the latest “Vampire Facelift” as the latest, proven technique in re-”vamping” your skin’s complexion and reshape the look and and feel of your skin. Rather than only focusing on just what you can see manifesting on your face, you can actually tackle the root of the problem and potentially prevent future issues. Using your very own genetics, you can now create a roadmap for your skin which is both purposeful and essential for changing the outcome. At The San Diego Facial Rejuvenation Medical Center and Facial Beauty by M.D. Laser & Vaser LipoSelection Center presents unique ways to rejuvenate your skin, face and body appearance for the Summer. The “Vampire” Facelift improves your skin tone, texture, collagen and elastin production using your own plasma coupled with micro needling which attracts stem cells and growth factors. Stem cells are those cells which are recruited from your own body, reads your DNA and creates new tissue in that area. Sound extreme? It could

standard procedure sooner than we think as it is virtually a non surgical facelift. The technology behind this combines the applications of hyaluronic acid fillers with blood derived growth factors, the Vampire FaceLift® offers a unique balanced approach to reviving your beauty. This is coupled with transferring your own fat cells, which contain the largest number of your own stem cells, to areas of your face which have lost volume due to the aging process and genetic factors. This is performed with the unique technology of Vaser Ultrasound assisted LipoSelection whereby areas of fat are gently removed under a local anesthetic as an “in office” procedure with virtually no down time. The outcome is not only immediate, but continues to be enhanced over time. The result: endless beauty. We think we’ve finally found the fountain of youth- or at least as close as we can get to it!

Luxe Layovers Airports with amenities so plush you might consider missing your flight on purpose. Remember when airport shopping meant far-from-glamorous cigarette cartons, drugstore perfume and jumbo bottles of rum? Those were the days when long layovers were to be avoided at all costs, an airport dinner was a bag of candy, and relaxation meant 10 minutes in a coin-operated vibrating chair. Things have obviously come a long way: These days, even the smallest local airport usually has at least a Starbucks and a decent magazine stand—which is good news, since flight delays and cancellations have become the rule rather than the exception.

We’re spending more vacation hours than ever killing time on standby, which is why airports worldwide have started to fill their terminals with shopping, spas and restaurants to rival those of Rodeo Drive. Travel hubs from London to Tokyo are becoming style destinations in themselves, boasting amenities so plush you might consider missing your flight on purpose. We’ve put together a guide to some of the best, to help you plan for the most luxe layover possible.

If you’re flying through Asia, be sure to free up some space on your credit card Hong Kong International Airport houses two luxury shopping emporiums with just about every highend outpost imaginable, including Lanvin, Bottega Veneta, Dior and Chanel. Singapore’s Changi Airport serves double duty as an ultramodern mall, with more than 160 retailers including Chloé, Prada and Fendi. And in Tokyo, Narita Airport plays host to Tiffany & Co., Samantha Thavasa and Ralph Lauren, among others. In Europe, the tax-free status of airports takes some of the sting out of the dismal exchange rate. London’s Heathrow is home to British luxury brand stores such as Agent Provocateur, Burberry, Jo Malone, Mulberry, Paul Smith and Smythson, while Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is the place to stock up on last-minute Italian luxuries from Valentino, Gucci and Furla.

BEST FOR HIGH FASHION Vacations are for relaxing, so you may as well get a head start in transit. On this side of the Atlantic, New York’s JFK Airport is home to a handful of spas, including a branch of Park Avenue’s Oasis Day Spa, which has an extensive menu of facial treatments. Miami International Airport’s Jetsetter Spa helps get you beach

ready with manicures, pedicures, spray tans and cozy sleeping pods. Reykjavík, Iceland, is world renowned for its geothermal spas, and one of the most popular, Blue Lagoon, has opened in Keflavik International Airport, offering a selection of its signature treatments. If you don’t have 45 minutes to spare, Urban Retreat in London’s Heathrow offers fliers its famous 15-Minute Pit Stop, a rejuvenating treatment that perks you up in the time you’d spend standing in line for a pretzel.

BEST FOR UNWINDING reykjavik • Blue Lagoon If you’d rather shop for something you can’t get at home, head to the southern hemisphere. Cape Town International Airport in South Africa has a mall that feels like a local bazaar, with shops like African Eco, which specializes in environmentally friendly art and gifts; Hamba Kahle, with its selection of local spices, wines, liquors and sauces; and Out of Africa, selling traditional crafts, furniture, jewelryand textiles created by local artisans. Sydney Airport in Australia boasts shops devoted to local wine, chocolate, natural bath and body potions, and Aboriginal art, while Auckland International Airport show-

cases New Zealand’s local delicacies and fashions. Farther north, Zurich Airport is home to more than 60 taxfree shops full of Swiss watches, chocolate and La Prairie face creams. And you can even preorder for pickup on arrival.

BEST FOR LOCAL SOUVENIRS ZURICH • LA PRAIRIE Airplane food is still as grim as ever, but a few airports have more than made up for that. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has opened a restaurant in Heathrow Airport called Plane Food, with a gourmet menu based on his Boxwood Café in London. If a small snack is all you need, wander over to the branch of Soho’s famous Amato bakery to tide you over. You won’t find chic shopping or worldclass spas in Boston’s Logan Airport, but you will find some fantastic food. Acclaimed Beantown restaurant Bonfire serves up Argentinean steaks all day long, and Jasper White’s Summer Shack boasts a full-fledged clam bake and locally caught lobsters packed to travel. If you still need something to take the edge off your flight: a martini at the glossy Ozone-Bos cocktail lounge will make you feel like you’re in first class even if your ticket says coach.

ZEN YOGA NICARAGUA

ZEN Finding Your

SA N J UA N DE L S U R , N I CAR AGUA

Traveling awakens the senses and nurtures all of the aspects of your being. Seeking exciting new adventures, capturing stunning vistas, visiting historic sites, exploring local cuisine, getting sun-soaked and salty at breathtaking beaches, and meeting extraordinary people are all part of the journey.

Having recently traveled to Nicaragua, Ocean has been captivated and inspired by Vanessa Pattison, founder of San Juan Del Sur’s first and only yoga center. We not only were able to experience her world renowned yoga classes, but had the distinct opportunity to chat about how she fell into a life in the beautiful paradise that is Nicaragua.

WHAT MADE YOU MOVE TO NICARAGUA? My husband and I were on vacation in Europe and while on a subway in London we noticed the sort of mechanical nature of the people around us. On and off the subway, no one making eye contact, everyone racing to and fro, fully immersed in the rat race of life. We turned to each other and said, “this is us!” We were both working desk jobs, my husband in biotech and I was a Real Estate Apppraiser. Nothing wrong with our careers or our life but a sense of adventure was calling us. We sensed that something greater was out there waiting for us.

A dialog ensued in which we debated whether we could make a change? Should we leave our jobs? Could we leave our house, our family, our

friends? Should we sail around the world? Live in Central America half the year? All of a sudden we were excited about possibilities. We talked ourselves in and out of it for months. We even went on job interviews and nearly bought a way too expensive house during this time, all in a search for something, but what? Then simply enough in a moment of clarity or craziness (depends on your viewpoint) I wrote Will a letter which said “let’s go for it!” Life as we knew it was going to change. We were going to risk it all...our jobs, our house, our friends, everything. There was no turning back. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING HERE? Since 2005. What inspired the yoga studio? A slow realization that it was my destiny. I started teaching

yoga in San Juan del Sur after first moving here. It wasn’t my intention to teach. I had no formal training at the time but I started to teach out of a sheer desire to practice with others. We rented a home near the main market and I turned it into my little make shift yoga studio. I quite literally hung my shingle by placing a whiteboard on my fence that read “yoga everyday just $3, includes cup of tea!” I quickly became known as San Juan del Sur’s yoga teacher. After many years of teaching all over town, from beachfront sunset classes to community centers to private sessions, I built and opened Zen. DESCRIBE THE ZEN YOGA EXPERIENCE. I think it’s a beautiful synthesis of serenity and the town’s cultural quirkiness. You enter the studio thru

bamboo gates, just off the town’s main square. An occasional church bell rings in the distance, pigeons flock from the roof, and schoolchildren play animatedly nearby. But you leave most of the cacophony of town behind once you pass thru our gates and step thru a lush green garden. The yoga deck is on the second story of an open air space, which allows gentle breezes to flow through. We have a group of teachers that live in San Juan full time as well as visiting yoga teachers. This combination of regular and visiting instructors offers the students that perfect mix of familiarity and freshness. WHAT MAKES ZEN YOGA UNIQUE, CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE IN THE INDUSTRY? What makes us unique is our location. Being in Central America

in an outdoor studio with amazing town energy buzzing all around. You can feel the pulse of the studio and the town as you flow through your practice. What makes us creative and innovative is our mix of visiting yoga teachers, local students, ex-pats and international students engulfing Zen in this awesome energy that I have not felt anywhere else. WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR YOGA STUDIO AND PRACTICES? The inspiration for opening the studio was strangely the loss of a competition. I was involved in the first ever talent search to grace the pages of Yoga Journal Magazine, I made it to the top 5 out of 3000 people. Ultimately, I did not win. While sitting in my room feeling upset about not winning I asked the universe,

“what is my purpose?” The answer rang back clear and strong. Open the yoga studio! I realize now looking back at that moment that if I had won the YJ competition Zen may not exist. I would have flown to San Francisco for the photo shoot instead of breaking ground on Zen. Sometimes what we think we want may just be a distraction from what we need. The studios practices are constantly shifting and emmerging with each new teacher or program that comes through the studio all with the foundation that I originally laid in place. I love holding the space and letting it all unfold. Philosophy? “Just show up. Just show up to your mat. Set the intention and see what else unfolds once you arrive.” BENEFITS OF INCLUDING A YOGA PRACTICE IN YOUR LIFE? For everyone the answer is different. In my experience most people come to the mat for physical benefits but usually unravel so much more. For me, it is a constant checking in. Where am I balanced? Where am I not? It is a moment and a lifetime of arriving with myself and my dance partner, my breath. What does one need to know when coming to yoga? Honestly, the more I learn about yoga the less I know. I usually ask new students to come with an open mind and heart. Just keep arriving and checking in. Sometimes it is easy, sometimes it is hard but it is always worth it. Best advise? Be easy on yourself. Don’t worry about doing it “right”. Create a practice you can maintain for life. DESCRIBE CLASSES. We offer classes daily: Vinyasa Flow Chill Flow (for newer students) Liquid Flow (for surfers) Hatha Candlelit Restorative

Yin Acro-Yoga Prenatal Yoga Vinyasa Vino (once a month a special class with wine & organic chocolate) Spanish Flow (we offer classes in Spanish at a discounted rate to serve the locals) Instructor courses. Zen hosts visiting yoga teachers to lead 200 & 500 hour Yoga Teacher Trainings. This year we have cofounder of Manduka, Peter Sterios & anatomy expert James Bailey leading our program. ANYTHING EXCITING, NEW AND UPCOMING WE SHOULD LOOK FOR WITH THE FUTURE OF ZEN YOGA? Retreats and Yoga Teacher Trainings! Costa Rica our neighbor to the south has been a place for yoga retreats and yoga teacher trainings for a number of years. Nicaragua is up and coming and a little more raw and undeveloped, which brings adventurous spirits. Zen is already offering retreats and trainings and we see more beautiful offerings long into the future. Of course we will continue to hold daily classes and workshops to serve the locals as well as tourists. YOUR FAVORITE MANTRAS OR WORDS OF WISDOM TO LIVE BY? Whereever you go there you are. Words by Buddha. (this became obvious to me when I moved to Nicaragua and realized that although I changed my location I was still

there with all the same issues I left with). WHAT MAKES NICARAGUA A TRULY SPECIAL GIRLS GETAWAY DESTINATION? Nicaragua makes a great getaway for men & women. If you are traveling from the states, the flight time is short and the fares are good. Think Costa Rica 20 years ago. Beautiful beaches, warm weather, tropical fruits, amazing people and of course yoga! I am really pumped up about a new retreat Zen is offering. We have cocreated a retreat with an amazing woman named Julie McBroom, creator of a website called HipMum. The vision of HipMum is to, “hang on to your hip!”, even through motherhood. Spring trends for your next holiday With spring around the corner, it’s almost time for us to look back to the trends that came down the runways in September and make our plans of action – shopping lists, that is. As always, the variety of trends ran the gamut, but one thing they had in common was their statement-making appeal. Even the most minimalist styles stwood out with bold silhouettes. You’ll find spring 2014 trends like metallics, sheer panels and fringe in dresses, shoes, jackets and the like when you hit the stores. But what if you’ve got a getaway planned in the mean time? What if your vacation wardrobe needs an update? An island jaunt doesn’t mean you have to forsake your favorite new looks or turn to the same poolside staples. This year, spring trends are popping up in all things holiday-ready. We’ve broken down some of the season’s most important style stories and how you can work them on vacation, keeping your look ahead of the game without even having to try.

Team Player Fringe Festival High Shine Pop Art Sheer Madness

Team Player The sporty look has been going strong for a few seasons and it’s only gaining speed. Which is good news: with the comfort factor, versatility and flexibility of athletic-inspired designs, it’s so incredibly easy to be on trend. Take inspiration from this Balenciaga ensemble whether you’re lounging poolside or grabbing brunch before a beach day. This Lisa Marie Fernandez swimsuit, $330 at Shopbop, is the picture of sporty perfection and this T by Alexander Wang jersey-style dress, $262 is athletic cool at its most effortless.

Fringe Festival Whether it was Western, bohemian or classic rock and roll, many designers lined the edges of their spring creations with swinging fringe, often letting the free-spirited detail kick sophisticated silhouettes into high gear like this ensemble at Altuzarra. The trim is undeniably as fun as it is chic, and with its hippie-meets-globetrotter vibe, it’s also tailor-made for vacation dressing. This Jessica Simpson tankini top, 64 at Nordstrom, will instantly up the ante for your look whether you’re catching rays by the pool or taking an ocean dip, and this soft, open-knit cover-up, $80 at DailyLook is an effortless finish whether it’s over a swimsuit or pared with denim shorts.

High Shine The secret to instant, easy glamour? A shot of metallic. For spring 2014, designers applied the look-at-me tones to sleek, tailored and ladylike looks, creating the perfect balance of spotlight-stealing cool and polished chic – like this look at Diane von Furstenberg. Adding a bit of metallic to your getaway repertoire means you’ll be able to pull glamour right out of your suitcase without a thought, cementing your A-list style status from day to night. Your beach look will look its most luxe with this sleek and sporty, golden-detailed swimsuit from Michael Kors, $529 at Neiman Marcus. And to complete the look, add these gilded sandals, $250 at Tory Burch – they’ll also be the perfect way to punctuate a flowing dress for cocktails later on in the day.

Prints are nothing new, but every season, designers reinvent them with new patterns and color palettes. For Spring 2014, prints ranged from florals to modern art, but they all had one thing in common: they were bold. They seemed to leap off their surfaces with brilliant hues and unconventional motifs. Prada’s mural-inspired collection captured this spirit best, and the fashion crowd has already been sporting the bright, painterly prints out and about. You can work that art-gallery feel on your

tropical getaway with a swimsuit from We Are Handsome: their prints are photo-realistic as opposed to painterly, but the results are just as breath-taking. The results are eye-catching, fresh and unique – take this Malibu abode-covered version, $138 at Matches. Another brand known for its mesmerizing prints is Clover Canyon. This breezy maxi dress, $495 at Shopbop is the perfect demonstration of its incredibly spliced, re-imagined modern art graphics, and makes a striking choice for outdoor cocktails.

Pop Art

Sheer Madness

A few seasons ago, cut-outs cropped up on runways as strategic, chic ways to bare some skin. This season, that idea evolves into sheer layers and panels. The effect is still a little daring and a little edgy, but it’s also ethereal and adds an element of dimension. Sheer layers lend a new level of texture and movement to any look, while sheer panels reveal skin in a sophisticated, fashion-forward way. This look from Calvin Klein Collection demonstrates the perfect balance between polished and provocative. It’s easy to channel that fine line in this sleek swimsuit from T wby Alexander Wang, $390 at Saks Fifth Avenue. While this style takes a sporty approach, you can also choose a more glamorous, tropical route with this We Are Handsome cover-up, $550 at Bergdorf Goodman.

It’s hard to miss The Athenaeum while walking around picturesque Piccadilly. Not only is the five-star accommodation a prime example of elegant architecture, but the hotel’s signature “Living Wall” will draw eyes directly to its countenance. Like a picture straight from a fairy tale, the giant vertical garden of green grows up the side of the building, enchanting guests and passersby. A large choice of rooms, suites, and apartments—all with stunning views, complimentary snacks and soft drinks from the mini bar, and free WiFi—are available at The Athenaeum. Lively and lovely, many rooms offer views of Green Park or Mayfair. Suites contain open-plan layouts and separate sitting rooms and the rooftop suites provide the perfect place to unwind while feeling on top of the world. All rooms, suites, and apartments include the basic amenities of a Nespresso coffee maker, docking station for your smart phone, and complimentary use of gym and spa facilities. Superior Rooms are located in the hotel and neighboring townhouses will accommodate two guests. Deluxe Rooms also include LCD flat screen TVs and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook Mayfair’s Down Street. The sunny Park View Rooms offer views of Green Park, a modern living space, and the amenities offered in the Deluxe Rooms along with access to the full complimentary mini bar. The open-plan Mayfair Suite includes a large sitting area and picturesque city views, while the Green Park Suite offers views of its namesake and a separate sitting area. With striking views of London and its iconic sights from a private balcony, the Rooftop Suite is an idyllic home a way from home. Decorated with soft hues and flowers, the suite contains three double bedrooms with a dividing wall between two suites, a dining area, and 2.5 bathrooms including a Jacuzzi bathroom with television. So in love with London you want a longer stay? No problem. The full-service apartments provide a luxurious home within your own private space. Once attended by Steven Spielberg

who created an editing suite in an adjoining apartment, these long-term accommodations include a full mini bar, same-day laundry, and 24-hour room service, large bedrooms, kitchens, and dining areas.

PLAY

The primary goal of the hotel’s in-house spa is to make you feel indulged and rejuvenated as you find a second home in London. Create a personal spa treatment by mixing and matching offers like a custom-designed massage, cleansing facial, invigorating body scrub, or detox wrap. Other tailored treatments include a Moroccan Rose Ritual or a relaxing Elemis deep-tissue massage. Feel like hitting the gym? A fully equipped, 24-hour gym includes all the gear you’ll need to keep up your fitness while on vacation. Prefer a different kind of gym? The large Green, St. James’, and Hyde parks are all conveniently close by. Take advantage of complimentary bikes and go for a soothing or exciting ride, borrow a kite to run around with (also complimentary), or grab a blanket to get your fill of sunshine. Go for a run around Buckingham Palace guided by a map and return to soothe your muscles in the steam room or hot tub.

In the middle of all things London, The Athenaeum will captivate your attention no matter your preferred method of adventure. By the Royal Parks and Buckingham Palace, just a stroll away from museums, galleries, Theatreland, stylish shops and boutiques, and with Soho and the Canary Wharf within reach, the hotel’s location will prove quite fitting for the London vacation you always imagined.

ST. ERMIN’S HOTEL STAY

www.sterminshotel.co.uk

The rich history of St. Ermin’s Hotel begins with a 15th century chapel dedicated to its namesake saint and continues as the location for Winston Churchill’s “Setting Europe Ablaze” speech to the Special Operations Executive who, during WWII, would be stationed on an entire floor of the hotel with MI6 just two floors above. As you enter through the stunning tree-lined courtyard to the hotel’s theatrical lobby, you can’t help but feel the history while noticing its modern grand redesign. The hotel is also home to yet another unique fixture: more than 200,000 good-natured Buckfast bees who reside on the hotel’s rooftop on custom-made hives. These honeybees enjoy access to the parks nearby, allowing them to collect only the best pollen and nectar, giving their honey a delightful flavor. Eventually, this honey graces many of the hotel’s dishes. A variety of rooms and suites at St. Ermin’s (331 of them to be exact), are globally inspired yet still distinctly London chic. The busy streets of the West End will slip away as you slide under luxurious bed linens, comfortable fittings, and high-end bathrooms with White Company Products and soft bathrobes. All rooms include an LCD TV entertainment system, MP3 docking station, Internet access, and compatible electrical sockets. The Superior rooms features a queen bed and marble bathrooms while the slightly larger Deluxe King rooms offer a king size bed. With cozy lounge and sofa areas

and marble bathrooms, the Executive King and Executive Queen rooms are ideal for any guest. For a family of four or a group of friends, the Deluxe Double Double rooms offer two double beds, marble bathrooms, and modern furnishings along with plenty of space to relax and enjoy your group’s company. Spacious and equipped with two queen-size beds, a day bed, and two bathrooms, the Family rooms are perfect for those traveling with little ones. St. Ermin’s also offers 41 spacious Suites and Deluxe Suites. The large suites are a perfect escape from an exciting day with a separate lounge, Nespresso coffee machine, and all the comforts you can expect from a luxury hotel. A king-size canopy bed, marble bathroom— some of which feature a digitally controlled rain shower— and separate lounge make up the View Deluxe Suite. In cooperation with the Disability Discrimination Act, St. Ermin’s also offers 35 accessible bedrooms with wide doors, entrance ramps, grab rails, and emergency pull cords, low level sinks and bathtubs, and accessible toilets.

Quintessential Chic Spring’s Sizzling Fashion Trends

There are so many delicious spring trends, why choose one? We say experiment, have fun, play the fashion field and never commit. Ocean has put together simple checklists of key items that you’ll need to achieve each of the following styles: bohemian, sporty, romantic and luxe. Always make sure to add your own signature touch. We’ll bet our favorite Chloé bag that once you go chameleon, you’ll never go back to that stuck-in-a-rut uniform again.

BOHEMIAN All about oozing effortless style, boho looks are ideal for summer. However, don’t confuse a laidback, funky- cool vibe with being unkempt or messy. Kate Hudson and Drew Barrymore, two babes who have mastered the art of bohemian chic, always look camera-ready without looking like they’’re trying too hard. This summer, many designers have infused their collections with a mod, ‘60s vibe and lot of fresh trapeze and swingy shapes, all of which make perfect foundation pieces for bohemian babes. As for color, anything goes, especially yellows, whites, and fruit-inspired hues. Key designers: Tracy Reese, Jenni Kayne, Anna Sui, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Nanette Lepore, Milly, Biba.

Checklist

✓Minidress (trapeze or shift shape) ✓Embroidered/vintage-inspired peasant blouse ✓Cropped topcoat (three-quarter sleeves) ✓Pucci-inspired/tie-dyed swimsuit ✓Flat sandals/ballet flats ✓Floppy hat ✓Woven/crocheted hobo bag

SPORTY Achieving the modern sporty look does not mean dressing like you’re heading to the gym. For summer, it’s about infusing a sporty shot of style into a casual but pulled-together look. High-tech and shiny fabrics; loose, easy shapes; and lots of layering are the main components of a “Sporty Spice look.” Neutral colors are paired with bold and bright hues, including pops of neon for those who dare. Look for racing stripes, zippers, drawstring waists, and pocket detailing, but don’t over do it. Key designers: Prada, Diesel, Lacoste, Y-3, L.A.M.B., DKNY, Max Mara, D Squared, Twinkle.

Checklist

✓Loose-fit jersey or silk dress/tunic ✓Lightweight cropped bomber jacket/parka in shiny material ✓Pencil skirt/ pants with side piping ✓Swingy skirts ✓Striped/polka-dot T-shirt /blouse ✓Polo shirt ✓Round-toed shoes with woven detailing

Checklist

✓Smock-style blouse

ROMANTIC

✓Floral-print dress in maxi length

With ruffles, florals and frills reigning on the catwalks, this summer is made for romance. In oh-so-touchable fabrics like chiffon and silk, feminine silhouettes prevail. Puff and flutter sleeves, embroidery and flower detailing add to the pretty aesthetic. A pale palette of rosy pinks, beiges, whites and other neutrals rule the romantic look, with silver, gold, and other rich hues sprinkled in.

✓High-waisted A-line skirt

Key designers: Erin Fetherston, Marc Jacobs, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Sari Gueron, Vera Wang, Philosophy.

✓Voluminous minidress ✓Puff/flutter-sleeved blouse ✓Peep-toed shoes in pale pink or yellow ✓Antique pendants

LUXE Classic pieces in rich fabrics and simple, clean shapes are hallmarks of the luxe look. Details—--buttons, seaming, fit, pockets—--are extremely important. A luxurious look is always fashion, and never boring. One way to achieve this sumptuous style is to focus your outfit around one spectacular piece, like a trench, metallic top, haute handbag or bold necklace. Key designers: Tory Burch, Ralph Lauren, Peter Som, Gucci, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney.

Checklist ✓Linen tunic

✓Wide-legged denim ✓Halter dress in fresh print ✓Slim shorts/cigarette pants ✓Fitted trench in white ✓Patent- leather satchel bag ✓Lucite jewelry ✓Sandals with braided/interesting detail
