The brand’s first offering is the core ingredient for any great day at the beach or pool: the perfect towel. The debut collection features eight styles that draw upon influences ranging from mid-century Bossa Nova album covers to Japanese woodblock prints. Traditionally, the reverse of a printed beach towel is left blank and boring, but not so for TIDE & POOL. The reverse of every TIDE & POOL towel is printed with their signature Tidal pattern, offering sun worshippers two designs in one towel. Designed in Southern California by Jaclyn and James, and manufactured in Brazil by a 120-year-old linens company, TIDE & POOL towels are made with an eye for both design and craftsmanship. They are perfectly sized at 40” x 67” and are made of 100% cotton terry, spun at a luxurious 530 gram weight that’s plush, but not too heavy for your beach bag. The towels’ vivid colors

are created with fiber-reactive dyes that will endure for many sunny days to come.

Jaclyn & James conceived of TIDE & POOL while traveling in New Zealand in 2011. The homely towels they’d brought along on their trip did not honor the stunning landscapes and stylish shorelines they were visiting. Recognizing that towels are the most neglected of all the warm weather accessories, they set out to rescue the beach towel from coarse cotton and striped boredom. TIDE & POOL’s bold designs celebrate days well spent, elevating the towel from a functional afterthought to a choice accessory.

1. Smoldering eyes: First dust a soft eyeshadow shade across your entire eyelid. I love the shades in Sigma Beauty’s Warm Neutrals eye shadow palette. There are twelve wearable shades to create a perfect day or night look. To create my “Smokey Flair” Use a thin angled brush, and apply thick line of the Liberally Toasted Gel “Brown” liner along the base of the lash line, slightly winging it out on the outer edges of the eye. It should look smudged. Then apply thin line of the Wicked Gel Liner “Black” over the brown, but a thinner line. Curl and coat lashes with black mascara.

Indigo Tide 'S OCEAN ITH IEW W V R E T IN ST E'S MO N I L E TH OUS GORGE E DUO! V I T A E CR

Why we LOVE it Indigo Tide is a unique beachwear company that sells handcrafted pieces to fit into any beach lover’s closet. They are a brand that truly embodies the soul of the west coast to create the cohesive, effortless and beachy style worn by SoCal natives that is so adored by the rest of the world.

www.shopindigotide.com

OM: WHAT MAKES THE LINE UNIQUE IN THE INDUSTRY? IT: All of Indigo Tide’s merchandise is designed and customized for our customers which makes us different from retail companies who manufacture or sell wholesale. We take pride in the quality of our products and ensure we maintain a personal connection with our customers. OM:WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE LINES CREATION? IT: Our company started while we were on a road trip to Canada, a couple years ago. It was so cold there and as California girls we just wanted to tan on the beach, so that’s what we did. While we were lying on the sand we came up with the idea of starting a beachwear company. One of us went to school for fashion and business and the other was always into art and design, so we just looked at each other and thought ...why didn’t we come up with this idea earlier! OM:WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR LATEST STYLES? IT: We get our inspiration whenever we go to the beach or when we’re roaming around any beach towns. One of us will always think of a piece we want to have, such as needing a certain beach bag with a specific strap or just a simple patterned clutch that matches the vibe of the area were visiting. It’s mainly the experiences and places we go that give us our inspiration and motivation to create something new. OM:HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE INDIGO TIDE GIRL? IT: The typical Indigo Tide girl is one who is constantly at the beach and has a trendy boho fashion sense. The type of girl who packs up her sand clutch and heads to the beach early in the morning until sunset. OM:WHAT ARE YOUR 3 ULTIMATE MUST-HAVES FROM THIS SEASON’S COLLECTION? IT: We are definitely in love with our Black Lace Kimono! It fits everyone and is the perfect piece to wear for every occasion. Another favorite is our body chains, it’s a piece of jewelry you can add to a simple bikini and make it look stunning. Our last must-have would be our sand clutches. They match any outfit and can be used all season long. OM:WHO IS YOUR FASHION ICON? IT: We have a ton of fashion icons but our two favorites that inspire us for Indigo are Miranda Kerr and Rihanna. Miranda has a classy style and natural beauty that we really admire and Rihanna is always fierce and wears whatever she’s in the mood for. We try to mix both of their styles into our collection. OM:WHAT’S NEXT FOR INDIGO TIDE? IT: Indigo Tide just celebrated its first year as a company so we have a lot of opportunities ahead of us. We just wrapped up a huge fashion show event in Hollywood and now were focusing on selling our products at the Melrose Trading Post and opening up a store front in the LA area. We also want to eventually create a men’s collection, as well as a home collection.

FIVE

Secret Tips

to be Fit & Fabulous

this Fall!

OFTEN TIMES, WE GET WRAPPED UP IN OUR BUSY LIVES: school, work, relationships, and use these as excuses to neglect our health because we are in a hurry, we are on a budget, etc… Thereafter, we sometimes blame our stressed state-of-mind and everyday life’s chaos for our insecurities and feeling of being “not fabulous.” We should wake up every day end embrace the new beginning- the active choice to look outside and appreciate the beautiful months of September and October in southern California. We can choose to feel fabulous, and use what we usually consider a busy schedule, to be the catalyst that drives fitness and health- conscious decisions into our day. BEING FIT IS A CONSCIOUS EFFORT YOU CAN MAKE. Whether you set New Year’s resolutions way back in December or want to get a jump-start on your New Year’s resolutions for 2015, NOW is the perfect time to start navigating your fitness and health in the right direction. Here are five easy steps to be on your way to feeling fit and fabulous this Fall!

30

1. GIVE YOURSELF MINUTES OF RIGOROUS ACTIVITY DAILY. Make sure it is something fun that you enjoy! You can walk, run, bike, swim, hike, paddleboard, rollerblade, etc. The sky is really the limit! If you aren’t sure what that might be, then try different ones until you feel “happiness inside” while doing that activity! Invite friends or find a ritual partner that can enjoy these activities with you; if you won’t bail on plans with your buddy then you won’t bail on your workout! 2. INCORPORATE A STRENGTHENING ACTIVITY TWICE A WEEK. Weight bearing activities prevent your muscles from atrophying and help protect your skeletal structure. An “active meditation” exercise is wonderful for women. I call Pilates and Yoga this as your mind is focused on the activity and your muscles are actively engaging in

strengthening exercises. Our mind is never free: we are constantly thinking what’s next. Channel this energy to soak in “the now” and see the next moment of uncertainty as an opportunity of limitless possibilities! 3. BE CALORIE CONSCIOUS. Start looking at how many calories are in everything you eat, everything! Sometimes there is a huge calorie difference between two choices you are about to make. Choose low calorie. Try to keep your total caloric intake for the day below 2,500. In fact, make vegetables the “main course” and any type of animal protein as merely a “condiment.” Your protein consumption can come from fish, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. Smoothies are always a daytime choice for me. I put non-fat greek yogurt, mixed frozen berries, and orange juice in a blender for a quick meal and the energy I feel from this is wonderful! 4. WRITE IT DOWN. Being accountable for your actions is always the best way to keep yourself on the straight and narrow. (True for anything in your life!) What we put in our mouth to fuel our bodies should be a conscious decision. Have you ever sat down during an episode of “The Bachelor” with a bag of chips and before you know it, the whole bag is gone? Occasionally doing this is actually fine; just make sure you are including those calories into your daily intake! There are several apps available today that will chart your caloric intake as well as your activity for the day. A few I have had clients use and feel successful with are “Fitbit” and “MyFitnessPal.” With technology in the fitness and wellness industries growing fast, these as well as other mobile apps will help you stay on track to accomplish those fall goals. 5. FIND THE TIME TO ENJOY LIFE EVERYDAY! Your mental, physical, and social health plays important parts to your overall wellness. Don’t let obstacles drive fear into taking your eyes off your goals!

Baking healthy cookies is one way to embrace the Fall Season and the comfort and creativity of cooking. Here is a fall recipe for fabulous oatmeal cookies using pumpkin puree and maple syrup using no added oils, flour, or white sugar. Trust us, they’re delicious! INGREDIENTS: ¾ c. raisins ¾ c. slivered almonds 2 c. old-fashioned oats 1-2 teasp. cinnamon 3 T. maple syrup 1 c. non-fat milk (can also use soymilk or almond milk) ½ c. pumpkin puree

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350° F 2. Toast almonds in a dry saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until lightly browned and fragrant. Pour onto a paper towel to cool. 3. Mix raisins, oats, and half of the cinnamon in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Chop nuts and add them to the mixture. 4. Pour syrup, milk, pumpkin, and the other half of the cinnamon into the same saucepan you used for the nuts. Heat over low flame, stirring, until it boils. 5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir to mix. 6. Place spoonfuls of the cookies on a cookie sheet. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until slightly browned.

TROY'S BEAUTY REPORT: FALL 2014 Troy Jensen Celebrity Make Up Artist: My favorite beauty trends from the runway to real life. 1. Barely-there makeup. Nude is Fall's "it" shade. Eyes, cheeks or lips have a soft feel. Perfect for you minimalist. Troy's tip: Dab a touch of foundation or concealer over your lips before applying a nude lip color. By basing over lips will give you a true nude shade. Try Jouer cosmetics Age repairing concealer. Then apply Hourglass' Nude Lip Stylo lip color. They have six amazing Nude shades. Top off with Hourglass's Extreme Sheen High-Shine Lip Gloss in Child a pale pink beige.

2. Fall 2014 Collections Featured A Lot Of Accented Eyes In The Form Of Dramatic Winged Liners, Designers Opted For Bright Blue Instead Of Bold Black. Troy's Tip: To Transition Day To Night. Line Entire Eyes With A Bright Eye-Line In A Metallic Blue, Green,Purple Or Bronze.Pair It With A Bright Sheer Lip Gloss. Try Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils There Are 40 Shades To Choose From. 3. Metallic eye looks were another big eye makeup Trend I spotted this season. Make up artists did bright blue shadow paired with subtle gold metallic lower lash lines and corners. Troy"s tip:Use gold and silver eye liners as accent touches. Applying them to the inner corners over a clean or smokey eye.

4. Reverse French manicures are a cute update on an old classic via unexpected color combinations; or switching the bar of color from the tips to the nail bed. Troy's tip: My favorite reverse french is Nude with a gold tip. and I love Red with the bone half moon. 5. Stained Lips. Wine stained lips were popular an the runway. I love bright stains in Berry Pink and Plum. Troy's tip: Try Benefit Cosmetics Benetint. It's a bright cherry red lip and cheek stain. Just apply to bare lips and top off with a clear gloss. 6. Full, Bold brows. Thick bold brows can look masculine, but if you give them a slight arch. It will make them more feminine and elegant. Troy's tip: If you want to achieve fuller looking eyebrows. First brush brows up with a clear Brow Gel, then Use a small, flat eyeshadow brush and fill in with a matte brow powder. Then define with a ultra thin eyebrow pencil. Check out everything you'll need to create the perfect Brows with products by Anastasia of Beverly Hills.

7. dramatic gray-brown eye. Line eyes in chocolate brown, then dust over with matte gray eyeshadow to create the muted but sultry look. Troy's tip: Try Tom Ford OmbrĂŠ Eye Color Trio in She Wolf. It is a palette with a matte brown-gray, soft shimmery taupe and a sheer silver sparkle

8. Sapphire eye shadow paired with a red lip. First line eyes in black. Then blend the shadow into a diffused cat-eye shape. Finish the look with a vibrant red lip. The over all look is ultra chic. Troy's tip: Try YSL's Liquid Eyeliner Babydoll No# 18. An electric blue. From their 2014 Fall collection. Apply a thin line along the upper lash line and wing it out on the outer edges. Pair with YSL's Rouge Pur Couture The Mats. In 208# Fuchsia Fetiche.

9. Glitter lips. Pat on a lil glitter over your favorite lip color. My favorite combo is a brownish plum lip color with a dab of silver loose glitter. Troy's tip: When selecting the right lip color with the right glitter. There's a fine line between fashion and costumey. Don't over glitter!! Choose shade like Red or Pink lip color with a touch of Gold glitter just in the center. Or brownish or Plum lip stick with a touch of silver glitter.

10. Punky and a little futuristic eyes. Line eyes in black, then blend over entire eye lids with sliver eyeshadow. Smudge the black liner over the lids and blended it up toward the brow bones. Next apply an intense silver cream shadow at the corners of the eyes. Pair with a pale nude lip. Troy's tip: Try MAC's Smolder eyeliner. It's very playable and smudges easy. Use it to line and darker the eyelid. blend over with MAC's loose silver pigment. I like to first spray Evian water on my brush then apply the loose shadow. This will give a platinum effect as well as keep the shadow from falling off onto the face. 11. Eye shadow and matching lip. Create a smokey eye using shades of deep plum, rust, bronze, or purple and apply the same color one your lips. add a gloss for shine. Troy's tip: A full on dramatic eye and lip might be a bit much. So to make this look wearable. Create a smokey lined eye and used the shame shade on your lips. Try Clinique's Pick Up Sticks for Eyes and Pick Up Sticks for Lips. My picks are the Biggest Nudes for eyes and I pair it with Chubby Stick Moisturizing Cheek Balm in amp it up Apple, and Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Heaping Hazelnut 12. Metallic accents, Over a dramatic smokey eye. Dab a touch of silver, white pearl or metallic gold to the inner corners of the eye, or a dab just at the center of the eye lid. Troy's tip: Try Revlon Revlon Molten Metal Eyeshadow Duo 002 Silver Gold. Use it to pop smokey eyes. Simply apply it at the inner corner of the eyes. 13. Doll-like eyelashes. 1960''s inspired lashes ruled the Gucci, Versace and Prada Fall runway. Troy's tip: First draw a thin line along the upper and lower lash line. Smudge it lightly and apply a spiky doll like lash to the upper lashes and for you drink dolls, apply a slightly smaller style to the under bottom lash line. Draw a white eye liner on the inside water line to pop your eyes. Add a matte peach lip and channel Twiggy or Edie Sedgwick. Who are they? Google em!

14. Smokey winged out eyes. Troy''s tip: Whether you like browns and black, or bold enough to try it with electric blue, always pair a dramatic eye with a paler lip. I love this look. Then blend a matte eye shadow in the same shade right over it. It should be too perfect. Pair with a pale pink, nude or peach lip. 15. This Fall it's all about pushing the limits with color, So be bold, and be brave. Troy's Tip: Try a neon shade on as an eyeliner, or a acid tone on your lips. Allpy the Demi Wispy first, then the 113# right over it. Be sure to get each lash close to the lash line as possible.

17. Pastel muted eye shadow. Muted grays, taupe and cool browns look modern and fresh. Pair with a neutral lip color. Troy's tip: I love the warm muted Gray eye shadow in the Naked2 Basics eyeshadow kit by Urban Decay. This palette is perfect for this look.

The VASERlipo is a minimally in vasive, safe liposuction technology that produces immediate results with virtually no pain, downtime, recovery time or scarring. From the use of ultrasound to lasers, the liposuction involves the removal of fat with suction through small incisions that allows Dr. Paul to sculpt and shape the curves of the body. Using this precise proce dure, specific regions can be targeted in order to eliminate fat, while even more delicate areas such as the the neck and arms can also be treated.

WHO SHOULD GET IT:

Like many women, including myself, I’ve struggled with those extra pounds and those few areas that even with the most rigorous of exercising and clean diet just didn’t seem to work. Having learned of the benefits of the VASERlipo, it seemed to be a perfect treatment option to achieve the overall body contouring results I a always sought after. This even included the refining and accentuating the appearance of muscle tone.

THE PROCEDURE:

With VASERlipo, only a local anesthetic is used so you remain awake throughout the entire procedure making it incredibly safe. The only sensation that I felt was a slight tickling or almost deep tissue massage feeling during the suctioning process. The incisions

were tiny, like that of a small freckle, so virtually there was no scarring. Unlike the old-school lipo procedures that left the skin drooping or sagging where the fat was removed, VASERlipo actually helps stimulate the production of collagen—which can tighten the skin in the surrounding area.

THE RESULTS:

The results have been truly amazing and have proven to be long lasting. It’s been 6 months since my own treatment and my fat pockets are gone, my thighs no longer touch, my stomach is flat and my skin is smooth and even. Everyone has complimented me on my body transformation however, no one has noticed it was purely from a cosmetic procedure and not from what would be likely have to have been endless gym sessions. Was it worth it? 100% yes! I have fallen in love with the dramatic transformation that VASERlipo has given my body and curves, as well as the overall body image and confidence boost I have gained as a result. I was even more ‘inFATuated’ with this treatment learning that since the fat sucked out is still live cells and since it carries my own DNA, this fat can be used as an injectable similar to Restalyn or Juvederm, only it’s permanent and continues to grow and be enhanced over time. So I was able to use my own fat as a filler in my cheeks, a touch-up under my eyes and a little plumping of my pout which revealed a healthy natural look. VASERlipo is the ultimate new generation of fat removal procedures. It’s no wonder that it’s a favorite among celebrities, busy moms, working women and those who just struggle with those hard to get rid of fatty areas. With ease and convenience, and results that are beautiful and long lasting this is my number 1 Beauty Editor’s Obsession.

CAMILLA LUDDINGTON

STARS ON OCEAN’S OCTOBER ISSUE’S COVER. Grey’s Anatomy’s favorite starlet, Camilla Luddington shares her style secrets, fashion icons, beauty must-haves, and what’s next on the radar for this hot Hollywood Celeb.

FALL IS ALMOST HERE! WHAT IS YOUR FALL MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCT? I just purchased Marc Jacobs “Lolita” eyeshadow palette and I’m obsessed. The bronzed warm colors are perfect for fall and there is a shimmery gold shadow I’ve been adding to the inner corner of my eyes for a highlight.

HOW DO YOU CHANGE YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE FROM SUMMER TO FALL?

In the fall my skin tends to start getting drier and continues that way through the winter. When applying foundation I add in a few drops of Josie maran 100% argan oil for extra moisture.

HAVING BEEN ON TV AND MOVIE SETS AND WORKED WITH AMAZING MAKE-UP ARTISTS, WITH TROY JENSEN AS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITES! WHAT ARE SOME TIPS YOU’VE TAKEN AWAY FROM HIS STYLES AND USE DAILY?

Troy has his own signature cat eye that he describes as having a “smoky flare”. Instead of a precise stroke of liner he likes to smudge it a little, make it look a less “done” and more messy. I think it makes for a much sexier eye. He also mixes foundation with a serum that gives lighter coverage for everyday wear. Personally I like to be able to give the impression of an even skin tone while still seeing my freckles.

WHAT PRODUCT DO YOU TURN TO FOR YOUR ULTIMATE BEAUTY BOOST?

When I wake up and my skin looks tired-I give it a boost with Skyn iceland’s Artic face mist. I leave it in the fridge so it keeps cool and that way it feels extra refreshing. It’s a tip I learned from my makeup artist on the set of Greys Anatomy when we had to look camera ready and awake at 6am.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LIP SHADE?

I tend to like a peachy lip- my favorite shade right now is YSL’s rouge volupte lipstick in #13.

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE BEAUTY SECRET?

SunlessPro Tanning Bronzer by VersaSpa. I am someone who definitely looks better with a slight tan and when fall hits a girl can do with a little help. Of any fake tanner I’ve tried this is most definitely the best, it’s gives a very natural bronze. No muddy tint- no orange. I usually spray a light mist on my face before bed- or on my legs when I suddenly need to throw on a dress or skirt.

WHAT FRAGRANCE ARE YOU WEARING RIGHT NOW? OR YOUR SIGNATURE FRAGRANCE?

I have worn Princess by Vera Wang for years. I’m very particular about fragrance and don’t like something overly sweet smelling. Princess for me is feminine without being over powering.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE?

My style changes from day to day but I would say that grunge ends up being a go to for me. I’m most comfortable in a pair of Rag&Bone ripped jeans, combat boots and a simple T shirt. However, since being on Greys Anatomy I tend to love wearing heels out more than I ever did. When you’re stuck in scrubs all day you start to crave something a little sexier. Jewelry wise you’ll never see me in a pair of earrings- if I wear anything it’s always chunky rings.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FASHION MOMENT?

Jessica Paster styled me in a floor length black and white Carolina Herrera dress for the 2014 Guild awards. We pulled my hair into a high knot and Troy gave me a winged eye and nude lip. Our inspiration was Audrey Hepburn and there was something very classic about the look that felt glamorous.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO WEAR FOR FALL?

A knitted dress. It was all over the catwalk this fall from Lanvin to Stella McCartney to Celine. And again it’s something easy to dress up or down depending on shoes and jewelry.

WHICH FASHION DESIGNERS DO YOU MOST LOVE WEARING?

For everyday life I’m loving T-shirts by The Row and jeans by Rag&Bone. For evening or events -flirty/edgy cocktail dresses and rompers by Sass&Bide, Peter Pilotto for that pop of color and graphics, Carolina Hererra for classic feminine glamor and Paper London or Alice&Olivia for crop tops and matching skirts.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GO-TO PIECE OF CLOTHING?

I have a Barbara Bui leather jacket with tweed detail that I throw on with practically everything. Over a dress, with jeans- you can dress it up or down.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

My mother always told me a life lived in fear is a life half lived. Fear is stifling- I’ve tried to push it aside when making decisions in my life.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? UP AND COMING PROJECTS ETC. I am currently working on the second Tomb Raider game that will be out fall 2015. I perform the motion capture and voice for Lara Croft. And starting back up this fall will be season 11 of Greys Anatomy! I am beyond excited to see what drama is in store for my character, Jo Wilson.

LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS

...and so much more. By Lynne Chizzick

Reborn, renewed, rebuilt, redefined, rediscovered! REMARKABLE! Rwanda is new...

Rebuilt, redefined, transformed, and modern. Rwanda has emerged with energy and determination to rebuild and create a new nation. Twenty years after its national nightmare, peace and prosperity have come to this magnificent land.

Thousand Hills is the choice of experienced travelers seeking the ultimate customized safari adventure tour of Rwandan dream destinations. The expertise of owners Manzi Kayihura and Jacqui Sebagenia with their dedicated team guarantees a tour designed to fulfill your dreams and meet your travel needs and desires, timetable, and budget.

This awe inspiring adventure destination has been foremost on Ocean Magazine’s Promote Africa Tourism bucket list! For first class planning and arrangements, Ocean turned to the best...Thousand Hills Expeditions, ranked first in Rwanda and Uganda travel. (www.Thousandhillsexpeditions.com)

With Thousand Hills Expeditions, guests are entrusted to top professional guides, experienced naturalists who maximize your itinerary with their knowledge and expertise.Your adventure is guaranteed to be meaningful and memorable from beginning to end.

DISCOVER RWANDA....

The Land of a Thousand Hills is blessed with abundant natural beauty. Lush rainforest forms a canopy of variegated hues of green, blanketing hills and valleys. Ancient volcanic peaks of the Virungas mountains, picturesquely shrouded in hanging mists, shelter the renowned home of the treasured mountain gorillas. The ultimate highlight of a Rwandan safari is Volcano National Park and the promise of an encounter with the magnificent mountain gorillas. Ten of the main gorilla families are habituated to human contact and a Thousand Hills Expedition includes this incredible trek and rare hour long interaction with one of the families. Further south, the Nyungwe National Forest boasts 13 species of primates, and is the famed habitat of hundreds of chimpanzee and Colobos monkeys. Birders from across the world thrill in the ultimate quest to sight the rare specimens among the over 310 varieties of birds. Beyond imagination, hundreds of butterflies and varieties of orchids surround you. Traversing the Uwinka Canopy Walk, suspended high above the canopy, reveals a magical forest below. The safari experience takes you on a trek through rainforest paths. Eyes fixed on the canopy above, entranced by the wonder of noisy chatter, the whir of insects, and a cacophony of birdsongs, this is a not-to-be-missed amazing ecosystem. Terraced farmlands grace hillsides and valleys with waves of wheat and maize, vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and tea and coffee plantations. A glimpse at the wonder of the process of taking tea from field to table is arranged by your Thousand Hills guide. Begin with the beauty of the tea harvest, colorful fabrics dot the fields as workers snip only the perfectly ripe top sprout of leaves. Engaging all the senses, you are able to experience the sight of sacks of leaves arriving at the factory spilling into flats for the first stage of hand sorting and stem removal, the scent of freshly sorted tea leaves moving through the heating process, sorted again and separated into the different tea grades, and the final process of the tea taster sharing the judging of each batch of tea.

RENEWAL...

Peaceful, clean, and safe...Rwanda is a dream destination. There is an awareness and pride in all that it has taken to regain national unity and development. Rwandans have reclaimed a united national identity, a consciousness and respect for their resources and natural beauty that is visible from the moment you arrive. Rwanda proudly stands as a symbol of what can be achieved, the potential of every African nation with resolve to focus on unity and the needs and potential of its people. Rwanda is optimistic of its future. With a growing economy, investment in education and health care, towns and villages flourish with a commitment to healing a united Rwanda, celebrating their shared culture with renewed pride.

first stop: KIGALI REMEMBERING...

Images of Rwanda from the 1990’s still haunt our memories and theirs. The Genocide Memorial is a moving tribute to the victims, an important site for a pilgrimage. Visitors serve as witnesses to the pain of the past and the commitment and pride in the future. The garden memorial in Kigali is the final resting place for thousands of victims of the atrocities. By acknowledging responsibility for the tragic loss of lives, the memorial opened up the process of healing. Across the nation, communities have also built their own memorials and, with the graves of the thousands lost, remind future generations never to forget their shared grief and shame, with the cautionary words, “Never again.”

DON’T MISS...

A visit to the market in Kigali demonstrates the importance and pride Rwandans have in their community, their culture, and environment. Pride emanates from the colorful stalls, swept clean, a showcase of entrepreneurship, native artwork and handicrafts, fruits and vegetables, bulk and packaged foods, and all manor of goods and services. My favorite was the neat line of treadle Singer sewing machines and rolls of amazing fabrics ready to be transformed into individually tailored clothing, bags, or household décor, right before your eyes.

PARLIAMENT...

Education and development is the common focus. Within the Rwandan government, the presence of women at every level of leadership is a source of pride. A statue representing Gender Equity stands in a prominent roundabout, which is born out in its Parliament with 64% women representatives. The Rwandan Development Board is a significant presence across the country, visible in support of numerous community projects contributing to building the economy and supporting the culture of Rwanda.

AMAHORO STADIUM...

A love of football has been a uniting force for the Rwandan people and their stadium is a source of pride they can rally around in flag waving enthusiasm.

Kigali is unique among African cities. From the moment you arrive at the airport, you can sense a difference. We were met and welcomed by our personal guide, Amos, and whisked off in the comfort of the safari 4x4 to view the city - a city of hills, clean, fresh, and litter free. In the process of re-creating their country, a commitment to protecting the environment has made Rwanda a symbol of Green success. Plastic bags are not allowed throughout the country; plastic bottles are recycled, and roadside trash is virtually non-existent. The last Saturday of each month is a day of national pride, when all the people of Rwanda, lead by President Kigame, dedicate hours to cleaning and caring for the environment, sweeping leaves, planting, beautifying. A welcome sight in Africa!

WHERE TO STAY: THE KIGALI SERENA HOTEL Bask in the cosmopolitan five star comfort of Rwanda’s finest accommodation. This beautiful venue incorporates modern and traditional African design and art throughout and is at the forefront of international travel, hosting delegations, conferences, business associations. MIST-IFYING GORILLAS Our next stop is the famed home of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas, Volcano National Park. A dream of a lifetime, the awe inspiring reality of an encounter with these gentle giants is the ultimate wildlife adventure.

WHERE TO STAY: THE SABYINYO LODGE

The Sabyinyo Lodge (www.sabyinyolodge. com) is nestled in the valley beneath the peak for which it is named. A short drive to the park headquarters in Kinigi village, the lodge was built and is operated by the Governor’s Camp, and owned by a Community Trust which benefits community development through tourism revenues. The warm hospitality of the staff and the atmosphere of cozy comfort makes your stay at Sabyinyo a memorable experience. Overstuffed couches and chairs beckon within the beautiful lounge overlooking the mountains and valleys beyond. The glowing warmth of the crackling fire, the low lying tables filled with books of Rwanda’s splendors welcome guests to relax and settle in to read and reflect. Before dinner, delectable appetizers are served with wine and cocktails to complete

the casual comfort and appeal of the lodge. First class dining includes locally grown produce provided by the villagers. The spacious dining room afforded us an opportunity to share a communal dinner with fellow travelers sharing stories over wine and a beautiful multi course meal.

ARRIVAL:

The walk to the lodge and the cottages beyond winds through the spectacular landscape beneath the Virunga Mountains and presents a welcome entrance to the adventure that awaits. We arrive at our cottage and find our bags delivered and a cozy fire set in the stone fireplace. The spacious living area is inviting with comfortable seating arranged around a table decked with a beautiful floral bouquet. A second table for two is set for wine and writing. And the bed with warm duvet and fluffy pillows, is set with waiting slippers and the promise of a foot warming hot water bottle which magically appears at nightfall. A luxury bath with shower and soaking tub for a steamy bath after trekking completes the picturesque experience of Sabyinyo Lodge’s magic.

THE ADVENTURE:

An early morning departure in the mist of dawn and Sabyinyo Lodge readies the Trekkers with a healthful breakfast buffet and the essentials of the requisite walking stick and protective gaters in preparation for the gorilla trek. Thousand Hills Expeditions has prepared our reservation and included an introduction to the warden who oversees this protectorate of the remaining 950 mountain gorillas of Rwanda. Anticipation mounts as the 80 participants are divided into 10 groups of 8 and assigned to a guide, tracker, and several porters who carry backpacks, photo equipment, and act as support for the trek to the family’s current location. Trackers have had early morning reconnaissance to identify their overnight location to direct each group. Pierre is the ultimate gorilla trek guide, a true gorilla whisperer. His goal is to educate the tourists on gorilla behavior and he entertains as teaches. His passion and reverence for our primate cousins, who share up to 90-95% of our DNA, is beyond description. Pierre has devoted his lifetime to the protection of his beloved gorillas and his knowledge of each gorilla by sight is astounding, the product of years of study and observation. Pierre can out perform

any gorilla in chest pounding bravado, though he assures us this will, in all probability, be the only demonstration of this behavior we will see. The mist blanketing the five extinct volcanic Virunga Peaks is slowly lifting from the valley where villagers cultivate the rich soil and are now harvesting potatoes. The forests of evergreen and bamboo overhung with vines and sticker bushes present a challenge which our machete bearing trackers clear as we clamor over the gorilla’s own pathways. Our group will meet the Sabyinyo family, named after the tallest peak. This family is unique in having three silverback males, the elder 44 year old patriarch, and two younger males who have not challenged his leadership. The anticipation is by now palpable as we approach their anticipated foraging area and our porters stay behind. We hike up the remaining hundred yards in heart pounding silence. It is difficult to capture the breathless emotion of that first sighting. It is at once a magical, mystical experience. We stand in awe of their indescribable majesty, the wisdom reflected in the brown deepset eyes, their nimble movements, their focus on tasks, and the human-ness of their social interactions.... mothers watching toddlers spinning to dizziness on hanging vines with a typically bemused

expression, young ones dashing to the comfort of mother’s breast, peeking out watchful and secure, the building of shelters with bending branches. So much to take in and absorb. The gorillas have been habituated to human contact for research and ecotourism and are not threatened by our presence. They solemnly go about their daily routines of grooming and eating, playing and napping, socializing and hardly acknowledging our intrusion. We are allotted one hour to snap endless photos, barely grasping the enormity of this once in a lifetime encounter. Few words are exchanged as we each individually find ourselves immersed in the wonder of being in the gorilla’s presence, these ancient beings that link us through time. On our descent, we join in a feeling of shared experience, wordless and lost in reflection. We have experienced something meaningful for us in a variety of ways. From Dian Fossey’s memoirs of recording life with the gorillas of Congo and Rwanda, this dream was forged. Now that it has been realized, it is overwhelming to consider the reality. Unforgettable, beyond a doubt... plus all the cliches of life changing, transformative, an appreciation for the beauty of this life and all the wonder it holds.

destination: NYUNGWE FOREST

Winding roads through rainforested hillsides punctuate the five hour drive south from Kigali to the mystical Nyungwe Forest, home of Rwanda’s chimpanzee population estimated to be between 500 and 1000 and the glorious Colobos monkeys. The drive weaves through occasional villages with terraced hills cleared and planted with vegetable gardens and clusters of maize and wheat. Plantations of tea and coffee grace plateaus and wide stretches of valley. The beauty of the landscape fills the hours. A surprise awaits 88 km south of Kigali with the amazing King’s Palace Museum, an authentic re-creation of the 19th Century residence of King Mutara III Rudahigwa. The history of Rwanda is rich in culture and traditions represented here. This is also a

rare opportunity to visit the traditional Inyabo longhorn cattle integral to this culture. Further along on the journey from Kigali is the town of Butare, home of the National Museum of Rwandan, now the Ethnographic Museum. This Museum has seven galleries each dedicated to an aspect of Africa’s ethnographic history featuring collections of historical, ethnological, artistic and archaeological artifacts. Artisans demonstrate timeless skills as they create traditional baskets, mats, and pottery. This is a worthwhile stop to better understand the rich cultural heritage of the Rwandan people and a personal museum guide who shared her expertise and insights made this visit additionally valuable.

WHERE TO STAY: NYUNGWE FOREST LODGE Like a mirage arising from mist covered rows of tea plantings, Nyungwe Forest Lodge (www.nyungweforestlodge.com) stands in modern glass and stone brilliance. Arriving at the Lodge we are personally greeted by the warm welcoming staff eager to showcase their amazing property. A wall of glass frames a view of fields of tea stretching to a forested span of rolling hills. Beyond the infinity pool and small fitness area lies a far reaching rain forest valley viewed from the luxury of the 24 chalets bordering the tea plantation. Each room is uniquely modern with a luxury bath with tub and shower and double sinks, TV and wifi, designer furnishings and fireplace, featuring a balcony extending to the rain forest where monkeys and birds venture close for optimal viewing. The dining experience is strictly 5 star cuisine. With an eye to pleasing presentation, fresh quality ingredients, and creativity, the Nyungwe chefs offer a full menu of palate pleasing delights, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even our server, John, made the dining experience exceptional with his attentiveness to our dining experience. Nyungwe Lodge may appear to be remote, but this luxury venue with extraordinary dining is incomparable in every way. Be sure to enjoy a bicycle ride on the pathways through the tea plantation for an extraordinary one of a kind experience. With your Thousand Hills Expedition guide, you will embark on

the quest for prime chimpanzee and Colobos monkey encounters. From the convenience of the Nyungwe Lodge, you can easily access the rainforest reaches of chimps nesting in the canopy. Exciting characters, chimpanzees provide continuous entertainment as they swing through trees at staggering heights, performing circus feats without any safety nets and comedic encounters with their companions. The nearby Uwinka Canopy Trail provides incomparable opportunities for sighting incredible varieties of migratory birds and the famed black and white Colobos monkeys. As we trekked along the trail, our guide David sensed a slight movement far across the valley. Within minutes as we waited in anticipation, the trees came to life with a kinetic wave of bending branches. The beauty of these moments shared with dozens of these rare long haired monkeys came in flashes of black and white with flowing, luxuriant tails floating through the expanse of branches. It was made even more breathtaking by the even rarer sighting of elusive pure white babies clasping tightly to their mother’s chest. A spectacular experience beyond imagination. With dreams fulfilled and momentous experiences to covet and share, this short sojourn in this magical country of hope and pride has offered us a wealth of memories. As we bid farewell to friends we made, it is with hopes to return and discover more of Rwanda’s hidden treasures.

Time to dip your toe in the water. You may have thought that owning beachfront land on a beautiful tropical island could only ever be a dream. Not true at all. Indonesia has over 17000 tropical islands and some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere on Earth. From just $5 per square metre, you can afford your own white sand beach paradise – for pleasure or profit. Indonesia has one of the world’s fastest growing economies, with tourism growing at over 10% per annum. And land values rising exponentially. At Bali A List Property, we seek out beachfront land on both remote islands, like Pulau Sumba and Pulau Rote. And in more established places. Like Bali. Much of this prime beachfront land is going for a song. Yet there exists the infrastructure to build anything from a very private hideaway villa to an eco-resort. These islands are world famous for their surf breaks, diving and fishing. So don’t miss the boat.

TURNING LEAVES Turning leaves, grey skies, shorter days, pumpkin spice everything…all these are signs that fall is here. When the weather gets colder, for whatever reason, we feel like we need to go darker with everything we wear. Not this year. We’re breaking out of our rayless routine and going for something a little more effulgent. Dark doesn’t have to be dull, and neutral doesn’t have to be boring. Jewel tones give perfect depth to accommodate our need for cozy fall comfort, while still allowing the color to shine. Pair a neutral outfit with a brilliant sapphire blue, deep teal, or rich fuchsia to brighten things up. If you’re feeling more florid, try a neutral opaque nail to keep the focus on the color or pattern. This fall keep it simple, but have fun! Nail art and designs are more minimalistic so subtle is fitter. For those of us who love the glitz, add a champagne accent or simple design to customize your mani. we’re not mourning the loss of summer, we’re celebrating depth and brilliance and welcoming the fervor of fall.
