Mission of The Women’s Initiative Network “To serve the current and changing needs of women and girls in Collier County through grantmaking.”

Welcome to the 2013 Women of Initiative™ Awards. Today we offer our warmest congratulations to this year’s honorees and their friends and families and recognize them for their extraordinary contributions to our community. We are all so very proud of these amazing women. Lisa Merritt, Chair, The Women’s Initiative Network Steering Committee

The Women of Initiative Awards Luncheon is a source of inspiration to all who attend. Not only are we here today to honor ten remarkable women, but we also have the satisfaction of knowing that the proceeds from this event go towards the grantmaking of The Women’s Initiative Network to support the needs of women and girls in our community. Women of Initiative is one of the programs of The Women’s Initiative Network, the core of which is grantmaking. Your presence here today helps us greatly in our work, and we thank you for that. If you are not participating, we STRONGLY urge you to get involved! You will find a membership envelope on your table at today’s luncheon. Sincerely,

Lisa Merritt Chair, The Women’s Initiative Network Steering Committee

Leadership and Education Junior Women of Initiative The Junior Women of Initiative is an opportunity for volunteers to help build life skills, share experiences and mentor a wonderful group of at-risk girls. Launched in 2005, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, the program has expanded and matured and is now in its ninth successful year. This year had the greatest number of participants with seventeen girls from sixth and seventh grades, and 30 mentors. Some of the topics covered include: Looking at Yourself; Mastering your Emotions; Bullying; Standing up for Yourself; Taking Charge of your Choices; Bad Friendships; Relationships; What Type of Person am I, and Etiquette in Social Situations.

Empowered to Lead Supporters may choose to become more involved in The Women’s Initiative Network by participating in educational opportunities. The Empowered to Lead series consists of small discussion groups featuring topics and issues affecting our community. Empowered to Lead was launched in 2012 and the initial series was a sell-out. The following were informative topics presented during the 2013 series: • “Tallahassee – What Women Need to Know” A discussion with State Representative, Kathleen Passidomo. • “Understanding the Hidden Rules of Poverty” A presentation by Mary Ellen Barrett, Director of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence. The Empowered to Lead series is for The Women’s Initiative Network supporters and in order to encourage small group discussion all sessions are limited in number of attendees. A new schedule for the 2014 series will be available in the fall on the Community Foundation’s website at www.cfcollier.org

Networking There are many opportunities for supporters to be engaged through networking. There are two signature events each season. The first being the Women of Initiative Awards. This annual luncheon honors ten women who through their charitable activities and leadership have helped influence and sustain positive change in the lives of the citizens of our community. The December Annual Meeting & Report is another opportunity for supporters to network and learn more about the current year’s grantmaking program, hear the results of previous grants, and discover the ongoing challenges facing women and girls in Collier County. For more information about the programs of The Women’s Initiative Network, contact the Community Foundation of Collier County at 239-649-5000.

Grantmaking

Families in need of financial assistance will be one focus of the Women’s Initiative grants for 2013. These grants are in response to the recent alarming statistics gathered from Collier 211, the information and referral service launched by the Community Foundation in 2012. Due to the economic crisis, the greatest number of calls for help are from female heads of households on the verge of being evicted from their homes. These grants will help support a collaboration of private and public agencies tasked with finding the best solutions to these problems, such as assistance with rental subsidies and utility payments. The Women’s Initiative Network has granted approximately $150,000 to the following local nonprofit organizations • Senior Resources was funded through Collier Senior Resources and the Leadership Coalition on Aging. • At-Risk Girls was funded through the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. • Caregiver Support was funded through Alzheimer’s Network, Parkinson’s Association, Jewish Family & Community Services and Care Club. • $25,500 in grants were given in the name of Women of Initiative honorees over the past five years to their local charity of choice. Grant monies are raised through a combination of the investment income of the Women’s Initiative Endowed Fund and special events. Newly identified grants to address the most current needs will be announced at the conclusion of today’s luncheon.

Help us Raise $1,000,000

The Women’s Initiative Network is the only organization in Collier County dedicated to building an endowment to support the unmet needs of women and girls. The benefits of this endowment are many, but foremost, this endowment guarantees that, even through difficult economic times, both now and in the future, there will always be a source of funding available to address the challenges facing women and girls in our community. Mana Holtz, Chair, Women for Women Campaign to grow the endowment

Over the next two years, the primary focus is to grow the Endowed Fund enough to support a minimum of $50,000 in annual grants. To accomplish this, with your help, we need to raise $1,000,000 to support the unmet needs of women and girls. We hope you will consider opening a named fund or including a gift to the Women’s Initiative Endowed Fund in your will or living trust. Your name will live forever in our Legacy Circle and you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting the unmet needs of women and girls, now and for generations to come. For more information on the Women’s Initiative Endowed Fund please contact Eileen Connolly-Keesler at 239-649-5000 or ekeesler@cfcollier.org
