NEW MAGAZINE TO COMMEMORATE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN MARINES ON CAMP PENDLETON
The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is honored to partner with the local Chapters of the Women Marines Association and the Camp Pendleton Historical Society to create a magazine celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Women Marines on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
With the establishment of Camp Joseph H. Pendleton in 1942, Women Marines arrived one year later. Their role was to assist and support and to “free up” as many male Marines for overseas duty as possible. The Women Marine Reserve was formed on February 13, 1943, under Col. Ruth Cheney Streeter. Captain Lillian Daly was stationed at Camp Pendleton in March of 1943. She was one of the 300 women enlisted by the Marines in World War I for clerical work. She attained the rank of corporal when she was Miss Lillian O’Malley and was the first Woman Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton at the time. In October of 1943 the first contingent of 95 Women Marines reached Camp Pendleton and werewelcomed by General Joseph C. Fegan. Since then, many women have proudly worn the Eagle, Globe and Anchor.
This publication will feature a wide variety of historical articles and photos, commemorating the role of Women in the Marine Corps and their contribution to the United States of America. Your ad in the magazine is a great way to salute Women Marines, and to promote your business to thousands of potential customers.
