1. Tell us about your work: I have been a working photographer most of my life (since 1976) after graduation from the Rhode Island School of Photography. Now and for the past 13 years I teach digital photography in the continuing education dept. at The Rhode Island School of Design. Teaching has now allowed me to now concentrate on the fine art aspect of photography, something that I had been away from as my work as a commercial photographer did not leave much time for. As far as my taste in subject mater is concerned there really

called straight photography. In fact all my images in my perception are more like Photo Illustrations of a moment in time.

2. Is there a story behind the name of your business? I think the eclectic nature of the images on my site pretty much explains the name. I am I guess a professional observer. 3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer? When I was young (in my teens) I studied painting and was sure I would pursue it life long. But in 1967 I went into the US Navy and painting was impossible. That's when I picked up the camera. After leaving the Navy I used the GI Bill to pay for my photography education and that started my career as a commercial photographer. 4. Where do you draw your inspiration? The world is an interesting and mostly beautiful place and all you really need in a natural curiosity for sticking your nose in other people's business. 5. What’s your favorite item to create?

I love the process. The camera is the instrument for acquiring the necessary information, but it is in processing and finally printing the the minds eye vision is realized. I do not make (almost never) straight out of the camera photographs, the painter in me won't allow it. 6. What’s your best seller? I think that would be the photograph of a Peruvian mother standing with her child on her back, the child is wearing a cowboy hat. 7. How long have you been in Rhode Island? Profusion Cosmetics is a new brand I happened upon in the Target makeup section. When I was walking down the aisle, I noticed this super pretty lip duo and realized that it was a lip liner x matte liquid lip combo. Since I have only tried lip liner maybe once in my lifetime, I really wanted to give it a try (because we all know lip liner has made a MAJOR comeback recently.) When I picked up the product, I fully expected to see a price tag of at least $15 or more, and I just wasn’t

willing to spend that much for two reasons: 1. I had never heard of this brand before and wasn’t sure of the quality or longevity of their product 2. I wasn’t even 100% sure if the lip liner look was for me. So you guys can imagine my shock when I saw the price tag and it said $3.99 for the lip liner x matte lip combo. Yes, it’s full size. Yes, the color was so pretty. No, I am not kidding. This is real, and it is really only three dollars and ninety-nine cents. How could I not give this brand and lip liner a try? Target carries it so they must be pretty decent right? So now for my review: What I liked: Overall: I really loved the variety of colors this brand offered as well as how neutral they are. You could easily purchase one of these and incorporate it alongside other lip products in your makeup bag. Of course, you can’t beat the price tag either.

APRIL 2019 O CEANSTATE 13

Application: I really like how this product applies. It is very very pigmented, so if you are more of a sheer gloss or light lip coverage kind of person, than this may not be for you. But for $3.99, it is always worth a try. The applicator for the product is a great shape, it allows you to apply the lip product in one go, and is narrow enough to get the finer details. Wear/Longevity: I applied this lip product at about 11:30AM right before I started sipping on my Starbucks iced coffee. I checked in on the product at about 1PM and everything still looked good. At about 5PM (after lunch had come and gone) it looked a tad faded, but

14 OC E A N S TAT E APRIL 2019

overall still presentable (and that was without any reapplication of the product!) I would say that this product holds well throughout the day/night without too much maintenance needed. What I disliked: Application: As far as the application went, I didn’t have any issues! Wear/Longevity: The longevity of the product was perfectly fine with me, but I did have one gripe about the wear/feel of the product: After application, the product is very tacky and it takes a good amount of time to fully dry

into the matte finish. Also, because it is a matte lip product it is pretty drying on the lips, but I think it could work well if paired with a Chapstick as a base layer! Overall, here is my consensus: If you are someone who has never used lip liner but has been toeing the line with it, take the plunge! At such an affordable price point, you really cannot go wrong, especially because you get two products. You could end up loving both products, or at the very least loving one of the two. If you are an avid user of lip liner, why not experiment with a new brand? It could be your new affordable go-to!

THE TOYOTA COROLLA First Look: 2020 Toyota Corolla Story By: Duncan Brady

When I think of the Toyota Corolla, I think of my friend Colin. His first car was a Corolla, a tired stickered-up green one lovingly named Gus by Colin’s older brother. Before I had a ride of my own, Colin and I would carpool to volleyball practice in that little old commuter car. I don’t think he really knew it was a little old commuter car. He’d consistently take this one on-ramp at around 90-mph, with Gus’s measly engine groaning and narrow tires protesting through it all. That car wasn’t sporty, it wasn’t an athlete, but when called upon it could deliver the goods. The new

28 OC E A N S TAT E APRIL 2019

Corolla has a bit more bite to it. For the 2020 model year the Corolla sedan joins its hatchback sibling to round out the twelfth generation of Toyota’s venerable compact car. It’s lower, wider, and more powerful than the car it replaces, and newly aggressive styling hints at a car that could tackle an on-ramp with ease. At launch, the sedan is offered in five trim levels that can be split into two product lines: an “S” line for the driving-focused Corolla SE and XSE, and a luxury-centered “L” line which includes the Corolla L, LE, and XLE.

L models are powered by last generation’s 139-hp four-cylinder engine but the big news under the hood is Toyota’s new 2.0-liter four which made its debut in the Corolla Hatchback last year. Standard with the Corolla SE and XSE, the new powerplant pumps out thirty more horsepower than the carryover engine and still manages better fuel economy at 40 mpg highway. Try managing that kind of mileage in your crossover. Both engines are paired with Toyota’s CVT automatic, except the Corolla SE, which has the option of my preference, a 6-speed manual.

APRIL 2019 O CEANSTATE 29

The SE and XLE also come with 18-inch wheels—a Corolla first—wearing meatier 225-section tires for extra cornering grip. That being said, grippy tires won’t be the only thing keeping the Corolla safe on the road. Every trim level, including the sub-$20k Corolla L, comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense: the automaker’s title for its collection of active safety tech. To go down the list, every Corolla is equipped with automatic pre-collision braking, lane-keep assist with steering correction, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and full speed range adaptive cruise control. That collection of driver-assist active safety tech is impressive in any car, especially considering how just ten years ago this tech was totally inaccessible to normal people. To have it in a twenty-thousand-dollar sedan is—forgive me if I’m getting excited here—something of a modern technological miracle. So the twelfth-generation Corolla is safer, more capable, and is available at a range of prices that makes it accessible to the masses. At least on paper, it’s the best Corolla there’s ever been. But how does it drive? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
