FONDUE VILLAGE AT THE OCEAN HOUSE
Last winter we brought the Fondue Express to Ocean House. Opened to coverage from Food & Wine, Departures and Forbes magazines—plus millions of impressions on social media—the luxuriously cozy private dining venue offered a satisfying three-course lunch and dinner menu of Alpine delicacies served alongside vintage selections of Veuve Clicquot champagnes. This year, we’re delighted to expand the concept to include two larger gondolas, each able to host parties of up to six. Paired with the original four-seat Fondue Express, we’ve created Fondue Village! Each vintage ski gondola has been impressively restored, outfitted with warm woods, fine Alpine textiles, chandeliers and imported Swiss and Austrian glassware and china. Add a private server and Swiss chocolates for the road, a lunch or dinner in one of the gondolas of the Fondue Village— surrounding a fire pit and amongst twinkling pines—is an unforgettable experience for a romantic dinner for two or a warm gathering of friends. Please see website for full details. Presented By: Ocean House Dates: December 2, 2019 March 29, 2020 Recurrence: Recurring daily Location: Ocean House Address: 1 Bluff Avenue, Watch Hill, Westerly, RI 02891

1. Tell us about your work. My work has a quiet quirkiness that’s playful and yet serious. Some of my narratives hint and speak of childhood ptsd, relationships, friendships and frankly sadness. At other times I’ll paint portraits of objects to evoke feelings for simple narratives. 2. Is there a story behind the name of your business? The name of my studio has the root of the Persephone and Hades through the symbol of a pomegranate which I first experienced as a child of four or five that a neighborhood friend (Amy Scott) shared with me.

3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer? I think the desire has always been there for as long as I can remember to create images and I wanted to pursued illustration and painting since seventh grade and went to university after high school and a few years later I went back for another degree in printmaking at another university. 4. Where do you draw your inspiration? My muse in the studio and creative energies stem from the strong desire to create. Like many visual artists I am inspired by the world I walk through daily and feel that art is a form of conversation. Often that conversation starts with oneself but hopes that others are inspired by my thoughts as well from my creative outpourings. My work is figurative and highly narrative. The imagery is a fusion between the movement, form and symbols often co-opted from

language. I love the process and techniques of painting, printmaking and the occasional book arts but I also take great pleasure in immersing in the details. I’m an avid reader influenced by history, art and culture. I’m very interested in mythologies and fairy tales such as Chaucer, Ovid, Grimm and the effects of scientific and superstitious beliefs on our own as well as the cultures of other ages. Other great influences are the works of Joseph Campbell and especially the odd playfulness of Medieval Secular Illuminations. 5. What’s your favorite item to create? That’s a tossup between painting, printmaking but all have their root for me in drawing i.e. pen and ink. 6. What’s your best seller? That’s a tricky one as each of my works appeals to everyone differently and there hasn’t been one piece above others in appeal.
7. How long have you been in Rhode Island? I’ve been in Rhode Island for almost 10 years 8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island? The city of Providence and the waterways of Providence River and Narragansett Bay 9. Favorite place to take out-of-towners? Iggie’s clam shack as well as Loie Fullers, The Red Fez and RISD Art Museum and the Cliffwalk 10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers? Follow your Heart and do what only you can do. 11. Please include anything else you’d like to add: I’m randomly about town on my art cart weekends selling art in Providence

EASY & ATTAINABLE NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS BY: JENNIFER MENDONCA
With the New Year ringing in, everyone is filled with so much hope for all that 2020 can hold. Along with all of that hope and joy come some very ambitious New Year's Resolutions...sometimes a little too ambitious. More often than not, we end up dropping our resolutions well before January comes to a close simply because the goals we set are so overwhelming and at times unattainable in a year. Here are some examples of more attainable, easy (& less stressful) New Year's Resolutions:
FOR THE FITNESS FIEND: Set time aside to make a fitness schedule. Creating a schedule for dedicated time at the gym (or wherever you choose to workout) makes it easier for you to set aside time appropriately and stick to your schedule!
FOR THE ORGANIZATION EXPERT: Select one thingg you want to focus on organizing and create a dedicated plan for it. Break down what you want to organize (bathroom, living room, etc) by month, each with its own unique plan!
FOR THE FAMILY FOCUSED:
FOR THE SMART SPENDER:
Finding time to do fun things with the family can always be difficult, especially when we wait until the last minute! At the beginning of each month, take time to create a few activity plans for your family to enjoy. You can even make a fun game of it – pick ideas out of a hat, or create a wheel to spin for each month's activities!
Many people struggle when it comes to saving money, and more often than not it all comes down to: Budget (or lack thereof.) In order to effectively save money (and spend smartly) take the time to create a detailed budget for yourself or your family. Start with a relaxed budget and adjust it accordingly as the year goes along!

Stephen Fasano, head of research and strategy for Synergy Media said “When we look at major categories of consumer spending including housing, food, health care, and education, automobile prices are by far the lowest, and even below that of inflation. New automobiles are more affordable now, when it comes to real dollars than they were in 2009. “In addition, when you look at what you’re getting for those dollars, in most of those categories it’s the same thing. Groceries, housing, education, consumers are paying more for what is a product or service that hasn’t really improved. However, when it comes to automobiles, there’s a vast improvement in technology, safety and efficiency. Technology means that more passenger vehicles come with navigation systems, phone integration. Safety systems including ABS, Stability control are essentially standard, and many vehicles come with AEB, lane keep assist for active safety, and more airbags and hold up better for passive safety. And finally, they’re much more efficient with the average vehicle getting 5 more miles per gallon according to the EPA. Combine that with a lower actual cost of a gallon of fuel, and not only is it less expensive to purchase a new car, it’s also less expensive to drive it.”
SOURCES Source: 2009-2019 US CPI Index: Prices for Cars, 2009-2019 4.49% According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices for new cars were 4.49% higher in 2019 versus 2009 (a $673.25 difference in value).
