HOW DO I FIND EXISTING RI DOCKS?
The best way to obtain a deep water dock is to buy a home that already has one. If it’s there, chances are you’re good to go, and you can avoid the application and permitting process. To find existing docs check Google Earth and the nautical online charts at OceanGrafix.com Zoom in and look for small black lines indicating

HOW CAN I TELL HOW DEEP THE WATER IS?
Determining water depth is tricky. Weather and tides change the bottom constantly.OceanGrafix Charts will give you an idea of how quickly the floor drops off, but an actual measurement at extreme low tide is the only way to know with certainty if your boat will clear the bottom in all situations. A weight on a string will do the trick in most situations.
WHAT IS CRMC AND WHERE DO THEY FIT IN? RI’S Coastal Resources Management
Council is a state agency with jurisdiction over the coastline and coastal waters of Rhode Island. CRMC classifies all of RI’s coastal waters. Much of the coastline around Narragansett Bay is Type 1 water where docks are prohibited. Maps of CRMC’s water classifications are a good place to start searching for dockappropriate waterfront homes or land. If you build, repair or alter anything in the water in front of your land, you must apply for permission from CRMC. Wicked Tulips THE HOTTEST TICKET IN RI
about a week and a half ago. I’d stumbled across it while scrolling their site during brunch at The Garden Grille - Sunrise at Wicked Tulips (Farm) in Johnston. So, maybe everyone was checking in from, or posting all about, ‘Wicked’ (Search the hashtag Wicked Tulips on social, you’ll see.), but this 6am event was something brand-y new this year and I hadn’t seen thing one about it anywhere else online. Hence, there would most likely be #BraggingRights for attending, yes? It was scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, April 25, but since I already had plans to attend a blogging conference in NYC that day, we agreed the following Tuesday, May 2nd, would be the big day. I mean, there was rain in the forecast for the 25th anyway and what’re the odds it would also rain that next Tues? Cut to yesterday morning at around 3:30 am when thunder and heavy rain startled me up out of a deep sleep. After a minor anxiety attack (What to do? Should we still go?), and a few quality minutes stalking the Wicked Tulips’ Facebook Page, figured I’d send a private message to see whether or not they would be opening. Since it turned out they would in fact be open for biz (extra points for their getting back to me so darn quickly), we decided to motor over, in our inclement weather gear (Don’t even think about any dainty footwear, even if the sun is shining!), and give it a whirl. Everything was beautiful, despite the rain (although it did let up some by 6-6:15am). The funny part was that I was certain we would be the only ones there, given the stormy conditions and super early hour. Not even close! Right after we parked, a bunch of other cars and trucks started making their way in. I mean, that’s really saying something, as in - “This is THE hottest ticket in town!” Another interesting observation is the amount of peeps, who (like us) were there taking pics, or having their pic taken, in the Show Garden. (As the name says, it’s not for picking, only for appreciating with your eyes or photo opps.) Again, that is MAY-JOR, especially at 6:30am on a drizzly Tues morning. Summer Days IN RHODE ISLAND
Ah, Summer Finally, we’re together again. Although I do enjoy ice skating and skiing, for me, they just don’t compare to lying on a warm beach, swimming, and surfing. And in Rhode Island, we’re lucky to find everything we need to enjoy summer right here in the Ocean State. This list is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather a list of ten of my favorite ways to spend a day during the summer in Rhode Island.
1. SURF, BEACH, & MINI-AMUSEMENT PARK IN NARRAGANSETT For
more low-key (read: novice) surfers like myself, Narragansett Town Beach generally offers small (one to three foot) waves, and the water tends to be freer of seaweed than some other local surf beaches. You can set up a surf lesson in Narragansett or rent a board with Warm Winds Surf Shop or Narragansett Surf & Skate, or just head out with your own board. The beach is separated by a surf side and a swim side, so if you’re only up for swimming, you can head to the other side of the beach. Note that Narragansett Town Beach has a fee both for parking and for entrance on the beach. For lunch, I love Crazy Burger, which has a great selection of burgers, salads and sandwiches for vegetarians and omnivores alike. If that’s not enough action for the day, then we’ll stop at Adventureland, a miniature amusement park with a carousel, bumper boats and a kids’ raceway. We usually like to pick up some local seafood at Champlin’s to cook at home later (likely stopping for some ice cream at the Sweet Spot while we’re there), and picking up some local corn at Sunsets Farm on the way home.
2. BIKE RIDE AND LUNCH ALONG THE BAY If it’s not too hot,
one of my favorite things to do is take a bike ride along the East Bay Bike Path, which follows the coastline of the bay between East Providence down to Bristol, Rhode Island. The ride isn’t terribly hilly, and it’s so peaceful to ride along the water. I like to stop along the way at the Audubon Society in Bristol to explore their outdoor grounds or indoor museum.
When I’m up for a more adventurous activity, I love to hike up Fort Wetherill in Jamestown. It’s a fairly easy walk, even with children, and the views of The view Narragansett Bay are fantastic. If you Wetheri from Fort ll State think ahead, you Park . can pack a picnic lunch. Or, you can make your way into the town of Jamestown to pick a spot along the water. There’s also the Jamestown Community Playground for kids that need to let off steam before or after their meal.
4. BEACH, BOATS, KITES AND SEAFOOD IN NEWPORT AND MIDDLETOWN I usually skip Newport’s Easton’s Beach (“First
Beach”) in Newport, and head to Sachuest Beach (“Second Beach”) in Middletown, Rhode Island. The water tends to be freer of seaweed, although the seagulls remain as aggressive as ever here, which is why I don’t recommend lunch on the beach. Plus, who needs lunch when you can go straight from the beach to Frosty Freez for delicious soft-serve. We always like to try to make time to take a drive along the coast on Ocean Drive, stopping at Brenton Point State Park, which typically makes for a great kite-flying spot. We’ve also spent many pleasant hours over the years in the rental boats available at Sail Newport in Fort Adams State Park. For dinner, I usually head to Flo’s Clam Shack for my favorite lobster roll and clamcakes. Or if I’m in the mood for a more relaxing sit-down dinner, then I head to Scales & Shells for local seafood or Mamma Luisa for homemade Italian, both favorites that have stood the test of time.
Although the food is underwhelming, it’s hard to beat the view at Agave in Bristol. Save room for ice cream at Gray’s Ice Cream, which is one of my favorites.

and get invited by someone with a membership to one (guest fees tend to be about $5-10 per person at local clubs). After swimming (I like to do laps), I like a treat (shocking, I know). Depending on where I am, I might drive to Eskimo King. Another one of my favorites is an excursion to Wrights Dairy Farm for some coffee milk and strawberry shortcake. And what better way to finish a summer evening than with an outdoor movie at the Rustic Tri-View Drive-In?
6. FISHING, BASEBALL AND FIREWORKS What could be more American? Start with fishing and a ride on the carousel at Slater Memorial Park.
Then head to a Paw Sox game at McCoy Stadium, where you can grab some beers and a Super Pretzel, some shelled peanuts, or hot dog, and spread out on the lawn to watch the game. If you pick a night with fireworks after, then you can end the night with a close-up show.
7. BEACH, COCKTAILS AND OYSTERS One of my favorite state
beaches is East Matunuck Beach–it’s a bit rockier than some, but it’s has a great atmosphere for children. Plus, you can eat at the waterfront Matunuck Oyster Bar before or after. Am I the only one who finds the beach makes them hungry? If I’m looking for a more lively beach day, I might head down to Misquamicut Beach in Westerly, RI and have cocktails and lunch at The Andrea’s newly restored bar, right on the beach.
8. AN ALL-PROVIDENCE SUMMER DAY On Saturday mornings,
you’ll typically find us at the Hope Street Farmers’ Market in Lippitt Park, Providence. There are dozens of farm vendors from Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and throughout the summer, the produce increases in variety. You’ll also find the Pat’s Pastured Pork stand for breakfast sandwiches, or Tallulah Tacos for lunch. There’s even a series of local craft vendors if you want to do additional shopping. On other days of the week, I might head to Venda Ravioli, where you can eat outside in DePasquale Square on Atwells Avenue. You might not think of the zoo as too appealing on a hot summer day, but the Roger Williams Park Zoo now

has Hasbro’s Big Backyard with sprinklers and water play for the kids (and I suppose, over-heated adults). Don’t forget to squeeze in a few minutes to see some elephants, giraffes and gorillas while you’re there. Then, it’s hard to deny the tourist appeal of Providence’s Waterfire. It was the first event that brought us into Providence before Photo we moved here, and caption: its success has led to Michele and its adoption in other her family on the East Bay small cities. In my ideal day, I’d begin with watching them light the fires, then enjoy a meal at Figidini or Gracie’s, and finish off with a concert at Lupo’s.
9. BERRY PICKING AND WINE TASTING ON AQUIDNECK ISLAND
When I get sick of the beach (it takes a lot of beach days in a row for this to happen), I love going to Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown for berry picking. They also have a small gourmet grocery shop with other tasty treats. Then, I’d enjoy a relaxing snack and glass of wine at Newport Vineyards at their outdoor seating overlooking their rows of grapevines.
10. JOURNEYING TO BLOCK ISLAND
Although you can certainly take the ferry over and enjoy a meal and a beach day at Ballard’s Beach, you’d definitely be missing out. Instead rent a car (that in itself can be an “experience”), bring some bikes (although not ideal for young children), or get a taxi to Mohegan Bluffs, where you climb down a winding staircase of over 100 stairs down to the water. As treacherous as the descent seems, It is quite beautiful once you make it down – with the ocean up against an enormous cliff. •

Luncheon lectures by Jeff Leatham and Dr. Eric T. Haskell are scheduled on Friday and Saturday. Leatham is considered the most exciting floral designer in the world. Awarded the prestigious “Knighthood” (“Chevalier de L’Order des Arts et Letters”), the French Government’s highest honor for artists, Jeff designed the first major event to be held in the famed “Galerie des Glaces” (Hall of Mirrors) at Versailles since the time of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. His work is compared to contemporary art and his vase designs were so exquisite that the Dallas Museum purchased them for their permanent collection. His work is featured at international cultural, business and entertainment events. Dr. Eric T. Haskell will share his vast knowledge on French gardens with Newport Flower Show attendees during his lecture “Lasting Landscapes: The French Formal Garden.” Haskell received his Ph.D. in French Literature from the University of California, Irvine, and also studied Art History and Architecture in the graduate program
at UCI and at the École du Louvre in Paris. He has delivered over 550 public lectures and scholarly papers in 28 states and 11 foreign countries. In 2013 Haskell received two of France’s highest honors: Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académics (Knight of the Order of Academic Palms) and Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters). Free lectures and demonstrations by noted plant experts, flower designers and gardeners will also be presented throughout the weekend. About Rosecliff and The Newport Flower Show: With Newport’s largest private ballroom, Rosecliff was constructed in 1902 as a party pavilion for one of the leading society hostesses of the Gilded Age. TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK: I usually have heavily dark or creepy compositions and “de-compositions” of traditional, digital, or abstract art in various mediums: 2D(pencil, chalk, watercolor), 3D(resin, clay, mixed media), typography/calligraphy, screenprinting, tattoos. Graphic design layouts for albums, shirts, posters, stickers, enamel pins etc etc etc. Almost always rooted in sci-fi, horror, fantasy or psychedelic.
2. IS THERE A STORY BEHIND THE NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS? I’m a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy. Pencilmancer is just a spin off of Necromancer, whom raises and controls the dead to do his whim only with PENCILS.
3. HOW DID YOU COME TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST/CRAFTER/ DESIGNER? Art runs in my family, my mother was a great artist and blurred the boundaries of different mediums effortlessly while growing up. I’ve been doodling since I was 3 and it has been spiraling out of control ever since.

Absolutely anywhere I can. A lot of talented friends, plus I follow an incredible amount of artist friends and acquaintances on instagram of various professions, so that I’m never short on muses. Main inspirations include, (but not limited to): HR Geiger, Zdizlaw Beksinski, MC Escher, Alphonse Mucha, Brian Froud, Heironymous Bosch, Allen Williams.... and too many.. local/underground artists near and far, special FX movie wizards, musicians etc
5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM TO CREATE? My tiny grossling parasite sculptures and fossils are a lot of fun and are very effective in giving certain on-lookers a feeling of malaise, and scurry off. That’s always entertaining. I also get lost in practicing calligraphy quite often and forget what time it is in the wee hours.

CONTINUED DOES THE HARBORMASTER GET INVOLVED? FROM PAGE 7> No. The town harbormaster is not involved in dock permitting, but the harbormaster does manage mooring applications and placement. To obtain a mooring, you must own waterfront land. Upon receipt of a mooring application, the harbormaster determines the mooring location and submits his proposal to CRMC. CRMC must sign off on the harbormaster’s placement recommendation before the mooring is installed.

Harbor pilots use the U.S. Army Corps RI Navigation Projects page to navigate the big cargo ships through Narragansett Bay’s shipping channels. This site provides VERY detailed bottom depths for the listed areas. It’s a little tricky to access the sounding sheets themselves, but they are the PDF files within each area (ignore the others). Click the name of the area you are interested in, then click the “PDF Drawings” subfile. You will then see the raw bottom depth survey sheets themselves which display the actual water depths at that exact locations, at mean lower low water, in FEET.

$15K IN STUDENT LOANS IN 15 MONTHS This is the story of how I went from $29,898 in student loans with a minimum monthly payment of $342 to a balance of $13,671 and a minimum payment of $182, all in 15 months. Let’s start from the beginning shall we?
IN MAY OF 2013 I GRADUATED
from the University of Connecticut with my Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences. After 16 years of going to school, studying, getting A’s (okay… not always A’s), and being a good student I was more than ready to move on to the next step of my life. I wanted the next challenge, and more than that, I wanted to succeed in the next challenge just as I had succeeded Becky i s a nat i ve Rho de Isl a nd e r throughout my academic who live s career. and works i n Part of this, for me anyway, Providence . I wanted to pay them off ASAP to avoid paying more in interest and also to free up a large chunk of monthly income. Well, at this point it was soon-to-be monthly income. I still needed to find a job. I spent a month applying and all I had to show for it was one measly phone interview with a recruiter. He said I seemed like a great candidate, but there were no positions available for someone with my level of

experience. No positions were available for people with essentially no experience, is what he meant. I had spent my college career tutoring basic chemistry and statistics, and working at the dining hall or mail room in order to earn money instead of signing up for independent research credits. I had spent the summers interning at my Dad’s bioinformatics company, which I thought would look great on my resume, but there was no lab experience there either; it had all been on the computer or secretarial work. Panic mode. I had gotten too used to the world of academics. I had it ingrained in my brain that if you put in the effort, you would do well. If I didn’t do well, I knew that it was because I didn’t put in the effort that was required to do so. That C I got in Basic Immunology? It was because I spent all lecture every lecture on my iPad looking at the most recent runway shows on Style.com. I knew it was my own fault for not paying attention, and I left that classroom not knowing as much as I should have about Immunology. Fact: Senioritis is a highly contagious virus. But this was the first time I had put a lot of effort into something and was completely unsuccessful. Feeling the tick tock of my CONTINUED ON grace period coming to an end, PAGE 20 >

I made a few tough decisions, but at the end of the day I’m happy I made them because of all that I’ve learned. They helped me pay off over half of my student loan balance and decrease my monthly payment to $182 instead of $342. Let’s get this out of the way now: this is not an article about how I skipped my 2pm latte at Starbucks and suddenly had piles of cash to throw at my loans. It’s definitely not that easy. I also didn’t have a 2pm latte to cut.
HOW TO PAY OFF STUDENT LOANS FAST
I adjusted my game plan. If I were to have had my way after graduation, I would have landed a job in New York City that paid enough for me to live comfortably with roommates. Ha! I’m sure anyone else who dreams of living in New York, and even the people who currently live in New York, will know that that’s a pretty big goal for a college graduate with a monthly loan payment of almost $350. Running the numbers at the time didn’t seem doable for me (I’m totally terrified of even the potential of credit card debt or being short on a bill or rent payment). So I needed to change my game plan and work on reducing that monthly payment, so I would be more capable of moving to a more expensive city in the future. After about a month and a half of (unsuccessfully) looking for a job I accepted my Dad’s standing offer to come and work full time at his company, where I had interned during the summers. Again, not exactly my plan for post graduation, but I appreciated the opportunity and the

ability to get some more experience while earning a salary. I was hired as a research assistant for the bioinformatics team. I made $38,500 and was the lowest paid full time employee at the company. I also decided to live at my parent’s house for a while (it wound up being about a year). With the economy the way it was, and rent prices the way they were, I didn’t have enough to move out on my own and no one I knew had enough to move out with roommates. This was upsetting for me on a few different levels, because I felt like I wasn’t capable of being a fully independent adult, and therefore I was somehow failing. Looking back, though I wouldn’t move back in with my parents now (sorry, guys), I’m glad I had the opportunity to save on rent for a while. I’m also glad I took advantage of it while I was still fresh out of college, because if there’s any time to live at home, that’s it.
I LOOKED FOR LITERALLY ANY OPPORTUNITY
After starting my full time job, I pretty much immediately wanted to be making more money. I know, I have no patience. Once I decided I was going to pay off my loans, I wanted to do it ASAP. I applied at the local outlet mall for a position at Michael Kors, my favorite designer at the time (I hate to sound hipster, but I loved him before he was cool). Luckily a friend of mine from high school already worked there, and I was able to list her as a reference. Thanks to her I got an interview! And then a second one! Then I got a call saying they wanted to hire me! That was super exciting. I was going to earn extra money
talking about fashion; one of my favorite pastimes. Ok, let’s not kid ourselves, it’s pretty much my only pastime. Right before my second interview at Michael Kors, I attended a work event where a Chemistry teacher from the University of Rhode Island said he was looking for TAs for his Chem 101 lab. Obviously with my experience tutoring Chem 101 I immediately applied and was also hired there. And I accepted both jobs. I would be making an extra $10/hour at Michael Kors (working roughly 10-20 hours a week), and an extra $1000 for each class I chose to TA at URI (which was one in the Fall and two in the Spring, for 2 years). I don’t work these other jobs anymore because 60 hour work weeks across three different locations eventually burnt me out. At one point, I had not had a day off in over 6 weeks. After paying off half of my loans and decreasing my minimum monthly payment to $182, the cost became more than the benefit and I left the two part time jobs. Although, honestly, I would probably pick up another retail job in the future if I needed to because it was just fun.

money to every month in order to save up for future trips. Food – I don’t go out to eat a lot, but when I do I like it to be at a nice place (it gives me an excuse to dress up). I gave myself a monthly budget for these categories and did my best to stick with it.
THINGS I DON’T CARE ABOUT
Alcohol – the mark up at bars and restaurants is ridiculous, so I’m okay with either drinking my own at my place before going out or just having water with dinner Movies – It’s just cheaper to wait until it’s on TV or On Demand, tickets are expensive and so are the snacks there. Not worth it. Temporary indulgences like manicures or hair coloring – Either I can do it myself or the constant maintenance fee is something I don’t want to deal with. Apartment and Car – These are huge expenses, and once you move up it is really difficult to let yourself move down again, so I am keeping these as cheap as possible for as long as possible. I live in the least expensive apartments I can find, with roommate(s), and my car is from 1999. I’m sure there are a million different variations of these priorities. What’s important is that you take the time to think about what you actually want to spend your money on, and what you can live without.
WHY WASTE MY MONEY ON THINGS I DIDN’T CARE ABOUT?
I CHOSE WHERE TO BE FRUGAL
The thing about having extra money, is that it’s really easy to spend it. You think: I have a balance in my bank account, and as long as it’s above X dollars, I feel comfortable. So if my balance goes above X, why not treat myself? I’m all for treating yo self every now and again, but it shouldn’t be a spontaneous and/or sporadic habit. You need to budget for things or you’re always going to have a budgeting problem. I created a Mint account pretty early on and I use it obsessively. I also identified things in my life that I cared about, and the things I didn’t care about, and then I basically eliminated those things from my budget (or at least reduced them significantly). Why waste my money on things I didn’t care about? My lists look like this:

Fashion and accessories, Skincare, Beauty products – Hey, if you have to get up and get dressed and go to work, you might as well put on clothes you like and invest in beauty products that make you feel confident, right? Travel – On the cheap when I can, and only occasionally since this is inherently an expensive category. I currently have a separate savings account that I transfer a small amount of

And the money piled up, literally. At one point I had over $14k in my checking account. I even got to go to Monaco for a long weekend to visit my college roommate, who was getting her Masters there (hello free apartment to crash at). But I used most of it to pay off 2 of my 4 student loans, establish an emergency fund, and be able to move out of my parents’ house and only have to work one job. This was a pretty exhausting year or so for me, but I wouldn’t change it for the world, because I learned so much along the way. I’d like to do a post on just how much I learned at each of these jobs and how that has helped develop my world view, given me more confidence and know-how, and prepared me for the next steps in my life. Even though I wouldn’t change it, I definitely don’t want to repeat it. Guys, this was hard. I was exhausted. I lived with my parents. I had almost no social life outside of my various jobs. How to Wear THE 2017 PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR...

ANNUALLY, the Pantone Color Institute announces their choice for the color of the year. Their decision is based on trends they see across fashion, home decorating, automobiles, technology, and more. Pantone describes the color of the year as, “A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” “Greenery” has been announced as color of the year for 2017. What does this mean? More iterations of the dark green “Kale” I loved this fall as well as lighter, more yellow-y greens just in time for spring. We’ll see this bright color in home decorating trends, housewares like the new Keurig, luxury items like the new 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT, and of course my favorites: clothing and jewelry. So (assuming you aren’t going to plop down $112,000 for a new Mercedes), how can you incorporate this color into your world quickly and affordably? Jewelry! Dairy Free IS TRENDING. Here Is Why. IT IS NOT JUST CONSUMERS motivated by animal
rights (vegans) on the non dairy bandwagon. People with dairy intolerances, different cultures, health concerns and taste preferences are all leading to the rise in non dairy beverages. Consumption is increasing drastically. Upon contrasting and comparing, here is what I found. According to a study released in May by the USDA’s Economic Research Service, per capita fluid milk consumption has fallen from .96 cup-equivalents per day in 1970 to about .61 cup equivalents per day today.
Blue Diamond reported that sales of almond beverages are growing at 80 percent annually. Supermarket shelves once exclusively reserved for dairy products have had to moooooove over. Alternative non dairy beverages, cheeses and yogurts are in demand. Consumers have growing concerns over dairy due to: Hormones and Antibiotics, Autoimmune Diseases Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, and Autism. These are just of few of the reasons people are turning to milk alternatives. But are alternatives to milk the appropriate choice for everyone? First let’s review the most popular non dairy alternatives:

Almond Milk-Available in original, vanilla, chocolate (sweetened and unsweetened). Depending on the brand an unsweetened cup has 30-50 calories. Sweetened almond milk can be up to 90 calories per cup with 17 grams of sugar. Almond milk has significantly fewer calories, fat and carbohydrates than Cow’s milk. However, almond milk lacks protein at only 1 gram of protein per cup. Cow’s milk has 8 grams of protein per cup. Recently, some companies have started to add protein to almond milk. Both are fortified with vitamins and minerals. Soy Milk-One of the first milk substitutes to arrive at the market place. Soy is the only milk substitute that has the equivalent amount of protein as cow’s milk, at 8 grams per cup. Most companies fortify with vitamins: A, D, B12 and calcium. Soy is one of the top GMO crops in the United States. Therefore, you may want to choose organic brands that use non-GMO ingredients, if you decide to choose soy milk. Coconut Milk-is similar to almond milk, but some find the taste better and texture creamier. It is made by blending coconut cream with water. This milk is made from saturated fats in the coconut, which are actually beneficial. Yes, some saturated fats such as coconut oil are made of medium chain triglycerides, which are good for your hair and skin for example. Coconut milk contains no fiber or protein which may result in earlier feelings of hunger compared to cow’s milk or soy milk. Rice Milk-is lighter and sweeter than almond milk or cow’s milk. However, it is high in carbohydrates and sugar and has zero protein. This has the lowest nutrient value of all the milk substitutes. However, it may be an appropriate choice for a person with allergies to nuts or seeds. Flax Milk—is very low in calories at 25 calories per cup. Most companies make flax beverages by combining flax oil with water and emulsifying agents, plus thickening agents. Some companies add protein to equal about 5 grams of protein
per cup. Flax milk (depending on the brand) has 1200 mg of omega fatty acids which are beneficial for your immune system, cholesterol levels and may aid in lowering blood pressure. As a food and nutrition expert, I believe that the recommendation of limiting dairy for prevention of cancer or autism is at best confusing. The science based evidence is inconclusive. Dairy products are the main dietary source of calcium, an essential nutrient for bone health. However, not all dairy products are made the same. Not all protein such as chicken are made the same either. For example, compare boneless skinless chicken to a deep fried fast food chicken. Now let’s compare a fat free cheese with zero grams of fat per ounce (tastes like rubber) to a full fat cheddar cheese with 10 grams of fat per ounce. I explain to my clients that not all chicken is bad, neither is all cheese bad. I tell my clients to look for cheeses that have less than 300 mg of sodium and less than or equal to 6 grams of fat per a one ounce serving. In summary, we should focus on whole, healthy foods. Calcium should be part of a well balanced diet. For those of us who have intolerances or allergies to dairy, some of the alternatives listed above may be great options.

VOLVO’S V90 Volvo’s V90 is the latest iteration of the wagon that made Volvo famous, and the V90 Cross Country is the newest model in the V90 lineup. The Cross Country has a go anywhere look and feel, much more so than the standard V90 wagon. Just take a look at the exterior….it is elegant, yet rugged. It is practical, yet refined. The V90 Cross Country is not really a wagon, not really an SUV… Volvo calls it a cross over. So for starters, the Volvo V90 Cross Country is a luxury all-wheel drive vehicle that goes anywhere and in any weather. It sits higher than a wagon or sedan-- with 8.3 inches of ground clearance which is about the same as a standard Jeep Wrangler. And there’s only one trim level—the T6 and there’s some optional packages you can add on. The engine is is turbocharged and supercharged and delivers an amazing 316 horsepower. It has an 8 speed automatic transmission and achieves
30mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. And this new V90 Cross Country can tow up to 3500 pounds. Standard are 19-inch wheels, although you can opt for 20s. So you can see this is a capable, go anywhere, do anything 5-passenger allwheel drive crossover with plenty of cargo space. But because it’s a Volvo, it also delivers a true Scandanavian design, sophisticated technology, luxury, and a driving experience that goes above and beyond. Inside, it looks a lot like its upscale sister, the S90 sedan. This is a cabin full of highend materials and luxury. Let’s start with the seats—superbly designed for comfort. Leather, heated, memory seats are standard. Also a heated leather steering wheel, two zone climate system. And of course, a power moonroof.
