MOTORING OVER TO NEWPORT?

of course you are

ANY MIX-UPS WITH THE EZ Pass lanes on the Pell Bridge aside (Tickets range from $25 all the way up to $175, if you're leasing your vehicle, if you accidentally find yourself rolling thru that EZ Pass only lane to the left. #ItHappenedToMe #ConsiderYourselfWarned), let's talk something new to do and be snapped doing in the City By The Sea right now.

NEWPORT MARRIOT "Plank bar" A FEW WEEKS AGO, my family converged on

Newport for a big wedding, staying at various hotels, inns, and Airbnb's around town. After comparing notes about our accomodations, the big news for those looking for the latest thing was definitely the brand new, redesigned lobby bar at the Newport Marriott. (Nope, this isn't a sponsored post, but I do welcome staycation offers. Jus sayin.) One of my brothers was there with his wife and kids and long story made super short, what they're calling the Plank Bar definitely caught his attention. And for good reason - it looks freakin awesome! (More Keira Knightley than Johnny D., in case you were waiting for a Pirates Of The Caribbean reference.)

And I feel like in general there's such a shortage of concept or stylized spaces like this in the area. In other words you guys, this is pure Instagram gold! Platinum even. I mean the Classic Newport IG gets will always be drinks on the lawn at Castle Hill (whilst seated in one of their signature white Adirondacks) and anything yacht related (Hats off to you if you have a professional photog along to document you, your SO, and your photogenic pup "yachting", but the real question is are you listening to Channel 70 on Sirius XM radio, aka, Yacht Rock?), but this amazing space is soooooo worth adding to your NP agenda this season.•

T HE N EWPORT COT TAGE & GAR DEN YOU' L L WAN T TO SEE T H I S SUMMER YOU KNOW HOW SOME PEOPLE

get a big kick out of referring to the Newport Mansions as summer cottages? Well, there's an actual (adorable) summer cottage on Bellevue you've probably motored right past. And who could blame you? I mean once any of us even approaches that postal code, we tend to get all starry eyed over the sights and stories of the opulence of the Gilded Age. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but The Flower Cottage dating back to 1870 is a must see on your next walking tour of the Bellevue Ave Historic District. Or another reason to embark on one this season. Back in the day, 1870-ish thru the early 1900's, a florist named John M. Hodgson who became super famous for designing incredible arrangements for the glitterati of Gilded Age Newport - kind of the Flowers By Semia or John Orton of his day if you will - used the Cottage as his storefront. There's a movie script in there somewhere with big name playing Hodgson of course, but I digress. Anywho, by 1921 the Cottage was converted to a private residence. The good news is that over the many years, it's been well maintained and updated, enviably so. I know this because it happens to be available for summer rental and I was scrolling pics of the 5 bedroom, 5.5 bath interior and back patio online the other night. So, if you happen to have an extra 20K lying around, or come Patty J. is into a lottery chief c ontent win or windfall creator at , inheritance at and founder some point in the of, the award not too distant wi nning future, add it to lifesty le blo g your Summer 2019 Patty J.c om , or 2020 living your whic h best life list. 1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK.

I am a mixed media artist. I feature artistic scrapbook pages, mini albums, junk journals, tags, cards and altered projects in my shop.

2. IS THERE A STORY BEHIND THE NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS?

When I first entered the world of scrapbooking and began signing up on different websites in the scrapbooking world I chose the user name Raining. I was a stay at home mom at the time with a 2 year old. Summer is my favorite time of year and this particular year it rained for at least 4 weeks straight. Anyone who is a Rhode Islander knows how short and precious the summer weather is. If you are a beach person like me losing four weeks of beach time to rain is significant. Hence the on line name "Raining" was born. Over the years I became more involved in the mixed media world and designing for companies in that genre and began my "Rainings Artful Life" brand.

3.HOW DID YOU COME TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST/ CRAFTER/DESIGNER? I started out following a kit club scrapbooking company. As

artist I became more involved Erika Smith in this genre I started moved to Rhode to design for different Island in 2008 manufacturers and kits and immediately clubs: Scraps of Darkness began exploring. and Elegance kit clubs, Wi t h t h e l a u n c h BoBunny, Heartfelt of I {heart} Creations, Frank Garcia, R h o d y i n 2 0 1 0, s h e c o n t i n u e s Cottage Cutz. I'm now gravitating towards becoming a portrait artist. I love drawing and painting in a variety of mediums such as charcoal, pastels, acrylics and oils.

4. WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?

When you look at the world through the eyes of an artist you find inspiration in everything you see.

5.WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM TO CREATE?

In the papercrafting area I love creating altered items and mini albums. Currently I've had a great affection for using art dolls in my work.

6. WHAT IS YOUR BEST SELLER?

My premade scrapbook pages sell out very quickly. They usually sell as soon as put them in the shop.

7. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN RHODE ISLAND?

I am a native Rhode Islander. I was born here and while I do travel I have never lived in another state.

8. WHAT DO YOU {HEART} ABOUT RHODE ISLAND?

I really love almost everything about RI. I live in the southern end of the state in a rural area close to the ocean. I LOVE the beach and spend my entire summer there. I love the landscape of RI and changing seasons. Living in RI gives us easy access to all of New England and we can easily travel to Boston, Newport, Connecticut or Maine in a matter of a few hours. We also have the best food in RI!

9. FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWNERS?

Most people who visit love to try out the fabulous food. We have great restaurants in RI. I enjoy showing people Newport, the beaches along the coast and of course Downtown Providence and the waterfires!

10. ANY ADVICE FOR NEW/WANNABE MAKERS? Just do you. Everyone else is taken. :) •

BACKReminders SCHOOL

14 OC E A N S TAT E SEPTEMBER 2018

by the Rhode Island Department of Health It's time to think about ways to keep your children healthy and safe this school year. Vaccinations, eye exams, bike helmets, and healthy snacks are at the top the back-to-school health tip list!

HELP KIDS HAVE A TOBACCO-FREE SCHOOL YEAR

Want to get your kid's school year off to a healthy start? Take some time to talk with your tween or teen about the dangers of tobacco use, including an addiction that can lead to a lifetime of serious health problems.

SCHOOL FLU CLINICS

Vaccinate Before You Graduate program.

EYE EXAMS

Every child should have a complete eye exam by age three. Serious eye diseases such as Amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes) are correctable with eye patches or surgery if caught early. All children entering kindergarten are required by state law to have a vision screening before the start of the school year.

The school flu vaccination program will once again run throughout Rhode Island this year. Clinics for students in kindergarten through 12th grade will begin in late PACKING LUNCH September and run through November. When you send your child off to school, remember to pack food safely. Before preparing lunch, wash your hands, fresh fruit SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTERS School-based health centers make getting and vegetables. There are currently two school-based health centers in the state. SCHOOL BUS SAFETY For thousands of Rhode Island students, the school day begins and ends with a trip HEALTHY SNACKS Set a good example and promote good health on a school bus. The greatest risk is not ridhabits for children by eating healthily and ing the bus, but approaching or leaving the being physically active. Provide healthy op- bus. CAR SAFETY

IMMUNIZATIONS

Make sure that your child has recieved all the immunizations that are required for school entry. Children need certain immunizations before entry into pre-k, kindergarten, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 12th grade. High school students can be immunized against many vaccine-preventable diseases through the state's

September brings an increase in car trips to school, lessons and sports practices. Safety experts recommend that all children under age 13 ride in the rear seat. If you must drive more children than can fit in the rear seat (e.g. a carpool), move the front passenger seat back as far as possible and have the child ride in a booster seat if the seat belts don't fit properly without it. SEPTEMBER 2018 O CEANSTATE 15

BICYCLE SAFETY

Be sure your child wears a properly-fitted bicycle helmet and follows a safe route when riding to and from school. State law requires that bicycle operators, bicycle passengers, skateboarders, roller skaters, inline skaters, and scooter riders 15 years old and younger wear a helmet.

BACKPACK OVERLOAD

Make sure children are not having back pain as a result of carrying a backpack to school. Look for packs with individual compartments and put heaviest items closest to the body. Sharp objects like pencils should be in smaller pockets on the outside. School back packs should have two shoulder straps and your child should use both.

BULLYING

Schools should be safe and supportive environments. Rhode Island Statewide Bullying Policy prohibits bullying in schools and recommends ways to prevent it.

SPORTS-RELATED CONCUSSIONS

Concussions can occur in sports or recreational activity. Sports-related injuries are one of the primary causes of Traumatic Brain Injury in school-aged children. Athletes who return to play before they are cleared by a physician could risk serious or permanent injury.

DISEASES AND CONDITIONS

Hand washing is one of the simplest and most effective means of preventing the spread of flu and other infectious diseases. If soap and warm water are not available, consider giving your child packets of alcohol-based hand gel. Clean counters regularly with cleanser or soap to lower germs that may hitch a ride back home from school.

PLANNING FOR SICK DAYS

Make plans ahead of time to care for your child in case he gets sick. If your child has a fever, keep him home from school until he has been feverfree for 24 hours without the use of medications such as Tylenol or Advil. As flu season approaches, learn how to prevent and treat the flu. • 16 OC E A N S TAT E SEPTEMBER 2018

INGREDIENT 2 banana pancakes 18 OC E A N S TAT E SEPTEMBER 2018

recipe

Lately I’ve been trying to eat a healthy breakfast every day. Don’t get me wrong, breakfast is my favorite meal. Ever. But it’s very easy to get in the habit of not eating anything in the morning because you don’t have time to spare before heading in to work. So recently I’ve invested in some protein powder and I’ve been making quick and easy protein shakes (more on that in a future post). I usually add banana and so I went digging for more banana breakfast recipes and came up with these 2 ingredient banana pancakes.

Becky Freeman is a native Rhode Islander who lives and works in Providence. She uses her blog, Fashion Food Fotos, to share her life tips, experiences, and musings, along with her favorite recipes, outfits, travel, and beauty tips. You can follow her on Instagram @beckyfmartin.

ingredients 1. 2 Eggs 2. 1 Banana

directions 1. Mash 1 banana in a bowl with a fork. 2. Whisk 2 eggs in a separate bowl. 3. Mix the eggs into the banana and fry in melted butter over medium-low heat. 4 Serve with fresh fruit, syrup, and/or jam (like I’ve done here), or have them with a fried egg and bacon.

The mixture seems really goopy when you put it together, but trust me, they come out fine. Each pancake should be about 2 Tablespoons (they are mini) so you are still able to flip them easily. You end up with about seven mini pancakes. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this recipe, but they came out tasting really good. They definitely aren’t fluffy like a traditional pancake, but I’m a sucker for bananas and a more custard-y texture and so I really liked them. Depending on how well you mush the banana, you could even end up with some super thin crepe-like pancakes. Yummm. And they’re Paleo and Gluten Free to boot! I hope you like them! What are some of your favorite breakfast recipes? •

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

2.0T AWD

Asking the $40k Question by Duncan Brady

SEPTEMBER 2018 O CEANSTATE 27

THERE ARE PLENTY OF REASONS to choose one car over

another. A stronger engine, better safety scores, superior fuel economy, a lower price. Hyundai has leaned pretty hard on that last attribute for sales in the past, though it appears a new trend has taken hold within the product design rooms of the South Korean manufacturer. The midsize Santa Fe is completely new for 2019, and our test car stickers at over $40,000. Abandoning the crutch of the value proposition, does Hyundai provide buyers enough reason to drive off the lot in their latest? Let’s start with where this car sits for Hyundai. As crossovers and SUVs occupy a greater portion of the automotive market, manufacturers are creating new vehicle segments and churning out entire product lines of these vehicles to satisfy demand. The Sante Fe exists smack in the middle of Hyundai’s SUV offerings. It’s larger than the compact Tuscon and subcompact Kona but smaller than the seven-passenger Santa Fe XL releasing in 2019 and the still-in-development fullsize Palisade.

BY RON of ST.the LAURENT It’s important to note that not every example new Santa Fe encroaches on a price bracket formerly reserved for luxury manufacturers. Those seeking a lower entry point may look toward the Santa Fe SE which offers a less powerful four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, and fewer interior goodies starting at $25,500. That being said, to experience Hyundai flexing some new-found luxury muscle, the Ultimate 2.0T is the way to go. The alphanumerics following that Ultimate designation denote that motivation for our tester comes courtesy of Hyundai’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, optional on Limited and Ultimate models. The turbo motor trades a few miles per gallon for 50 extra horsepower and an additional 82 lb-ft of twist over the base engine. That second number, the torque figure, is what you’ll notice. All that extra shove comes much lower in the rev range than the peak torque figure for the naturally aspirated base engine, which makes the power more easily accessible in everyday driving. Torque down low translates to stronger acceleration from a stop and effortless merging on the highway—plus easier passing once you get there—and the Santa Fe’s turbo offering has plenty of it. The exterior of the new Santa Fe introduces Hyundai’s latest design language, with a distinctive new grill and the split headlight design first seen on the subcompact Kona last year. More impressive is what you’ll see and feel when you step inside. The first thing we noticed was the Santa Fe’s headliner, frequently an afterthought in cars like this. Here, the speckled grey fabric upholstered above you and your passengers is a lovely detail, bright-

promptly but without drama. The system even has the capability to slow the vehicle to a complete stop. As long as the Santa Fe’s adaptive cruise control system is operating within its limits, (and it will let you know if you’ve exceeded them) highway driving can be a foot free affair. The also-standard lane-keep assist function keeps a watchful eye on the driver’s lateral movements. Its corrective steering inputs are less subtle than the cruise control’s adjustments to your speed. Sudden steering angles from a force not your own can be startling, like a parent reaching over from the passenger seat while giving their first driving lessons, though the Santa Fe’s brief audio cue and friendly hands-on-the-wheel graphic certainly feel less judgemental. Although, while testing the system by pinging and ponging between lane markers, I did concern the car enough to warrant a suggestion that I take a break. How thoughtful! ening up the cabin in a way that’s fresh compared to the some of the dark leather-lined caves coming out of Germany. Contrast stitching provides an additional visual flourish throughout the cabin. Unbroken lines of woodlike trim carry from the doors to a two-tired dashboard, framing an 8-inch touchscreen navigation unit which works rather well. The dash design, specifically ahead of the front passenger, reminds us how skilled manufacturers have become in hiding their airbags. Rear accommodations are impressive too, providing more than enough legroom behind our 6’1” driver and plenty of light through the enormous panoramic sunroof. It’s a good thing the interior of the Santa Fe is a nice place to spend time because this car offers a couple features that make it a fabulous highway cruiser urging you to add big chunks of mileage to its digital odometer. Beyond the heated and cooled seats, powerful stereo, and plenty of charging ports front and rear, it’s the adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist systems that define the Santa Fe’s highway driving experience.

At $40,000, those who sign the paperwork to drive off in a 2019 Santa Fe Ultimate are not doing so for the sake of a lower monthly payment. The reason to buy this car is not because it is good value for money. The interior is well-furnished, the infotainment system works without drama, the available turbocharged engine is strong, and the technology is impressive. The Santa Fe is even expected to earn the highest rating of Top Safey Pick+ from the IIHS (with optional equipment) and that tenyear drivetrain warranty Hyundai likes to brag about is no joke. This car is no longer a value proposition. It’s just a good car, full stop. • The new Hyundai Santa Fe, along with all of the 2018 and 2019 Hyundai models, is available at Hyundai of Newport in Middletown, Rhode Island. Currently they have special pricing on the new Santa Fe starting at $XXX per month. For more information go to HyundaiofNewport.com

Adaptive or radar cruise control could be the best thing that’s happened to the automotive consumer this century. What was limited to historically trend-setting luxury sedans like the Mercedes S-class in 1999 can in 2018 be equipped to $20,000 economy cars, or in this case a middle-tier Korean crossover. Hyundai labels their version of the now-ubiquitous tech as Smart cruise control, and it’s standard on every new Santa Fe that rolls off the production line. Based on a driver-selected following distance and desired speed of travel, the Santa Fe will modulate its throttle and brakes to maintain a safe cruising distance, combating the constant adjustment and consequent fatigue typical of traditional cruise control. It activates easily and operates unobtrusively, braking with only as much force demanded by the car you may be trailing and accelerating back up to your set speed
