FONDUE VILLAGE AT THE OCEAN HOUSE
Last winter we brought the Fondue Express to Ocean House. Opened to coverage from Food & Wine, Departures and Forbes magazines— plus millions of impressions on social media—the luxuriously cozy private dining venue offered a satisfying three-course lunch and dinner menu of Alpine delicacies served alongside vintage selections of Veuve Clicquot champagnes. This year, we’re delighted to expand the concept to include two larger gondolas, each able to host parties of up to six. Paired with the original four-seat Fondue Express, we’ve created Fondue Village! Each vintage ski gondola has been impressively restored, outfitted with warm woods, fine Alpine textiles, chandeliers and imported Swiss and Austrian glassware and china. Add a private server and Swiss chocolates for the road, a lunch or dinner in one of the gondolas of the Fondue Village— surrounding a fire pit and amongst twinkling pines—is an unforgettable experience for a romantic dinner for two or a warm gathering of friends. Please see website for full details. Presented By: Ocean House Dates: December 2, 2019 March 29, 2020 Recurrence: Recurring daily Location: Ocean House Address: 1 Bluff Avenue, Watch Hill, Westerly, RI 02891

1. Tell us about your work. I have been crocheting since I was 8 years old. My Memere taught me. I seriously began crocheting with thread about 15 years ago. I love the small hooks and the small thread! I can crochet anywhere and anytime because it is so compact! I love to work with the thread and I fall in love with every piece I make! 2. Is there a story behind the name of your business? The name Hook and Thread Creations came from my hook and thread products! My sister in law actually came up with it when I decided to try selling all these pieces I have made! There are only so many
pieces you can give away! This is my hobby and I love to do them so of course I have lots & lots on hand! 3. How did you come to be a professional artist/crafter/designer? I am a crafter because of the love of crochet! I consider it a hobby which I love, not a job!
8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island? I love the beaches and knowing I can go from one side of Rhode Island to the other side of it in under one hour!! 9. Favorite place to take out-of-towners?I Newport!
4. Where do you draw your inspiration? I draw my inspiration from my dear deceased Memere. She would do these and I would be in awe of what she could do with her hands!
10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers? Be happy, create what you love and never ever be discouraged if people don't seem interested in your talent!!
5. What’s your favorite item to create? I love creating all of my doilies!!
11. Please include anything else you’d like to add: I am constantly told that what I do is a lost art, and old person art and everyone has their grandmother's dollies in a old box in the attic. What they don't see or realize is that those doilies are works of art, took time and love to make, and one day will become the trend again!! I am patiently waiting for the trend to come back!! Meanwhile, I continue to do what I love and take pride in my work!
6. What’s your best seller? My best seller is a oblong doily that looks like a butterfly to some people, but I see pineapples, scallops, and starfish in the design 7. How long have you been in Rhode Island? I've lived in Rhode Island all my life.

RAINA SMITH Hundreds of years ago, Rex, one of the world’s rarest and most powerful vampires, decided to quietly settle in Newport, Rhode Island, where the public still has no idea he lives among them. Rex, however, is no ordinary vampire. A tortured soul, he roams Rhode Island’s most historic locations, tracking down some of the state’s most detestable human beings, to rid the area of those he considers contemptible, while leaving others in ignorant peace. Yes, this vampire kills, but he does so in such spectacularly chilling fashion that it’s poetic. His sensitive side though is what sets him apart from his coldblooded brethren. Connecting to living things upon the earth, he develops a newfound appreciation for the natural world, all of which he feels mortals mostly take for granted, but which he no longer does. It is because of this, Rex, a vampire, ironically finds himself searching for evidence of a higher power to explain the deeper meaning of his existence, and if one such Website: https://www.rainasmith.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AuthorRainaCSmith/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rainacsmith/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/RainaCSmith Author Raina C. While Smith knows she will never fully uncover the secrets of the universe, she feels with certainty that to begin to understand who we are and why we’re truly here, as well as start to heal the planet, we must all embrace the conscious intelligence of the natural environment surrounding us, and look into the eyes and feel the hearts of sentient beings, who already have the answer. chocolate and flowers that will wilt away within days? Is it a day to stress over making the perfect dinner reservation and worrying if your romantic gesture will be “enough”? Over the years, Valentine’s Day has slowly accumulated all of the stereotypes, when in reality, it has the ability to be so much more. It doesn’t need to be about the
chocolate or the flowers or the dinner. We all need to re-center ourselves and remember these factors when it comes to Valentine’s Day: 1. Material items will never be able to accurately represent your love or feelings for another person. This is such a big point to be made, especially when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Couples spend so much time worrying or stressing over picking “just the right gift” to accurately express and represent their feelings for their significant other. But remember, no such gift exists. Your love is uniquely yours and no one else’s (especially not someone in a big corporate company churning out Valentine’s Day gifts like ice cream). 2. The love we share on Valentine’s Day doesn’t always have to be directed toward a significant other. Many people get caught up in one of these two things when it comes to Valentine’s Day: -
What to get their significant other
-
Not having a significant other
In reality, there is so much more to this holiday than meets the eye! We can show love in so many different ways and to so many different people.
FEBRUARY 2020 O CEANSTATE 11
3. This is a follow-up for #2 (and very important!) How can we show love to people who are not our friends/ significant others without it being weird? There are so many different ways you could go about showing love toward someone else & never be afraid to get creative with it! It can be as simple as paying a compliment to anyone you see (a simple compliment can hold so much positive power) or practice the art of paying it forward by paying for the person’s coffee behind you at the drive-thru! 4. Valentine’s Day does not need to be so centered around money/material things! Go out if you want to, but don’t feel like you need to in order to celebrate Valentine’s Day “properly.” If staying in and ordering Chinese food while watching Netflix is what makes you happy, then go right on ahead and do it! 5. Last, but certainly NOT LEAST, we can never forget the number one person in our lives who could always use a little love: Y O U!
12 OC E A N S TAT E FEBRUARY 2020
It is 1000000% fine to make Valentine’s Day your ultimate self-care holiday. Do whatever makes YOU HAPPY. Reserve that table for one at your fav restaurant. Take yourself out for coffee. OR you can do what I will probably be doing, treating myself to my fav pint of Ben & Jerry’s and watching To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: P.S. I Still Love You (Lara Jean & Peter K. FOREVER!) <3 So, that’s all of the tips & tricks I have up my sleeve! I hope you were able to take something positive away from this article. No matter how you choose to spend Valentine’s Day, just make sure it isn’t something that will cause you stress on a holiday that’s all about love and happiness. Happy Valentine’s Day!

U.S. NEWS ANNOUNCES THE 2020 BEST CARS FOR THE MONEY Washington, D.C. – U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in rankings and consumer advice, today unveiled the 2020 Best Cars for the Money awards. For the first time ever, U.S. News will present the 2020 Best Cars for the Money awards at The Washington, D.C. Auto Show. "Cars with low price tags aren't always good values," said Jamie Page Deaton, executive editor of U.S. News Best Cars. "A cheap car can have high ownership costs, making it more expensive in the long run. Plus, a lot of inexpensive cars don't give you a great ownership experience; it's not a good deal if it's not a good car. Every Best Car for the Money winner is a pleasure to own and a good value overall." Covering 11 automotive categories, the awards highlight the cars, SUVs and minivans that give drivers the best combination of quality and value in their respective classes. Kia won the most awards with four, Toyota won three, Honda won two and Chevrolet and Hyundai each won one. "The Washington, D.C. Auto Show is the perfect place for presenting these awards today," added Page Deaton. "Like the Best Cars for the Money awards, the D.C. Auto Show is focused on helping consumers find the right car for their lifestyle and budget." 24 OC E A N S TAT E FEBRUARY 2020
