WITHOUT LEAVING RHODE ISL AND

WE WERE ON THE LOOKOUT for something to do in the PVD

A few months back, we took the Providence River Boat Company tour which was ducky. Entertaining. Informative. Wonderful. If you’re looking for something smaller and more intimate (and possibly more romantic...Some people have even gotten married onboard the authentic Venetian gondolas.) tho, then La Gondola is your jam. We reserved the Viaggio dei Sogni (Dreams) for 2 at 3 sharp. (The gondolas look as though they seat 4-5 comfortably, in case you want to make it a double date or even a family outing with the kiddies.) It is BYOB, so feel free to bring along a bottle of your fav vino, prosecco or whatever floats your boat these days and they’ll even chill it before boarding, provided you get there 15 minutes prior to your reservation.

Providence

area yesterday, when by accident, I came across La Gondola Providence. And let’s be serious for a sec, apart from anything to do with WaterFire PVD, did you know you could take a gondola ride in the capital city seven days (and nights!) a week? I definitely did not.

Before we took off from Gondola Landing at 1 Citizens Plaza, near Cafe Nuovo, they gave us two bottles of water (Vino is also an option.) and some outstanding homemade wine biscuits, which as any self-respecting Italian American from Little Rhody knows, are the cornerstone of any good Mediterraneanby-way-of-the-North-East diet. Another treat? Our gondolier serenaded us with not 1 but 2 classic Italian songs as the gondola passed back and forth under Memorial Blvd (something we were able to do because it was low tide, in case you were wondering). Our gondolier also chatted with us about the river (Like the city itself, it’s undergone a renaissance of sorts in terms of its ecosystem, which is why you now see lots of ducks and a few swans too paddling around.) and the city. The other key thing you might not realize is just how peaceful it is out on the water in one of those little boats. Our guy swore to us that it’s the same feeling during the week during rush hour as well. In addition, your time aboard those gorgeous gondolas is tailored completely to what you want, whether it’s a play by play tour of the river and the surroundings or something more mellow and less chatty. So, if you’re interested in booking a ride, check them out at gondolari.com for more deets.•

Additionally, this home is blessed with direct sunlight and views to the ocean. This added complexity to the job because whatever material chosen needed to be able to endure intense UV rays, moisture, frost, and wind. The best choice for this project was to use glass tile. Because of the endless style, color, size, and pattern options, along with the unsurpassed durability of the product, glass tile was the perfect fit. The end result was a beautiful and functional outdoor shower that will withstand the elements and this busy family for years to come. Homes in southern Rhode Island have to deal with many elements. Thankfully, glass tiles are amazingly durable. With proper care and maintenance, they are a good choice for

14 OC E A N S TAT E JULY 2017

most homes, including ones with high traffic areas that are susceptible to wear and tear. When installed properly, glass tiles are easy to clean and non-permeable, making them resistant to many elements. Because of this versatility, glass tiles can be installed in kitchens, bathrooms or even outside in spa and pool areas. Glass tiles can work as an accent to a design aesthetic or as a focal point. Additionally, environmentally conscious homeowners have the option of using recycled glass tile, a great way to continue your commitment to being green. HGTV has a great video on the benefits of using recycled glass tile, including an interesting explanation of how glass tiles are made. At DBCRI, we love using glass tile. It’s simple elegance and variety makes glass tile a great choice for many homes. Because there is some variability in color and special considerations for installation, be thoughtful when including glass tile in your construction design.

I graduated college and started living in my own apartment, I’ve had a fascination with interior design. I suppose this isn’t surprising; decor is kind of like fashion for your apartment. And I love fashion. If you follow me on Pinterest, then you probably already have some ideas as to my aesthetic for interiors, but I thought I might start using this blog as a way to share some of my thoughts on how to make a space both beautiful and functional (and what better place to start than the entryway, right?). Partly because I feel like all this pinning should be put to good use, but also because I feel like a lot of media focused on interior inspiration falls short when it comes to function.

Sure, I really like the super clean, simple look, but when I actually think about living in this type of space, I often end up saying “wait, but where would I put all my stuff? I’d ruin the whole vibe of this room the second I move in”. As with fashion, decor should aim to be stylish, comfortable, and functional. No one wants the Christian Louboutin equivalent of an apartment (damn sexy but so uncomfortable you want to cry after five minutes of standing). So I’ve put together a short list of seven things I think every entryway needs. Don’t have an entryway? No problem, you’ll still want these things close to your front door.

a mirror

Everyone likes to take one last look at themselves before they leave to make sure they don’t have broccoli in their teeth or unruly flyaways that need to be taken care of. Instead of running back to the bathroom before exiting, just have a mirror by the door. If you live in a studio, then your entryway probably overlaps with your bedroom, and you should make it a full length mirror for outfit checking purposes. If you can’t afford a mirror from an interior decor place (seriously, when did they get so expensive?) then you can find some cute options that are easier on your wallet at places like Target, Home Goods, and even Walmart.

2.

Seating

Whether its a chair, bench, or ottoman, or even the fact that your dining room table is 3 feet away from the front door, it’s a good idea to have a place to sit near the entry as a place to put on and take off shoes. Or, you know, sit and wait while your roommate hogs the mirror.

Crate & Barrel Fiji Bench $299

Table or Shelf

3.

Nora Console Table Chrome/Glass Steve Silver $237

This one seems like a no brainer – you need a place to put stuff down when you come home. Otherwise you’ll just always have mail, keys, sunglasses and other knickknacks on your kitchen counter, desk, or other area that would ideally be kept clear. Depending on how many people you live with and how big your space is, you can opt for anything from a small shelf below your mirror (or a mirror with a built in shelf like this one) to a larger table or console like the one pictured here. It’s up to you.

4.

Once you have the table or shelf to put your keys on, it helps to have a little decorative bowl or basket to hide your keys and other knickknacks in. There are certain items that just don’t look good laying around in your apartment, and keys are one of them. Mail can also be organized in a more attractive way, though I don’t know if I would consider that quite as necessary, since mail doesn’t normally stay in one place for long.

Macys Thirstystone Hammered Copper Medium Bowl $40

5.

Real or fake (can I get a ‘woop woop’ from my fellow black thumb readers?), plants help make your entryway a transitional area from outdoors to indoors. Bringing a little bit of green into the picture is a nice way of enjoying what nature has to offer, while still enjoying the air conditioning. Plus, if they’re real plants they’ll help clean the air in your apartment or house. Greenery for the entryway can range from anything to a small succulent or two, to a faux bouquet of flowers (if you like a more colorful option), to a larger tree or palm (if you want to play with height and scale). Plus, if you like to cook with fresh herbs, why not keep one or two of your favorites in your apartment and save on the grocery bill? We’re killing multiple birds with one plant here, people. A place to hang coats

6.

I’m extremely guilty of pulling a Miranda Priestly every day and flinging my coat and bag on whatever chair/couch/bed/desk/counter I’m closest to when I take my coat off. Unfortunately this isn’t the best way to keep your apartment organized when you don’t have an assistant, and it also drives everyone else crazy. Make your life easier and get a couple of hooks to hang coats and bags on. With a studio, it might be a better idea to just get one of those sets of hooks that you can put on the back of your door. Other solutions are mirrors that have hooks on them, or just getting a set of hooks that can be drilled into the wall. I suppose if you really want that stuff out of sight, you could get some kind of armoir (if you don’t have a coat closet already), but it all depends on the amount of space you have to work with.

22 OC E A N S TAT E JULY 2017

7.

Don’t forget little things like your winter gloves and hat, scarves, umbrella, rain boots, gym bag, disposable grocery bags, and other things that just make sense to keep by the door. If you don’t have a closet (and didn’t get an armoir for coats that could also hold this stuff), then you can either opt for a table or bench that also has storage in it, or add decorative baskets/storage bins underneath your choice of table or bench. And that’s it! For smaller spaces, where you don’t actually have an entryway, it’s great to opt for pieces that act as more than one of these items, like a mirror that has a shelf attached to it or a table/console that also hides stored items. It’s all about finding the pieces that work for your space, style, and stuff. What do you guys think? Did I miss anything you consider a must to have in your entryway? •

There Is No Such Thing As “MIRACLE FOODS”

Cancer is a disease that invokes fear, so it is not surprising that the public is eager to identify ways to decrease the risk. The media often features information on Miracle Foods and publicizes whether these foods can actually decrease the risk of cancer. Guess what? I am not the only one who thinks there areno miracle foods.. The International Journal of Nutrition and Cancer agrees in this article: Reality Check: There is No Such Thing as a Miracle Food, published in Volume 65, Issue 2, 2013 of Nutrition and Cancer: Written by the University of Minnesotas Maki Inoue-Choi, Sarah Oppeneer, and Kim Robien that calls on both researchers as well as media sources to consider the validity of multiple studies as opposed to singular studies before assuming that media information is factual. Stating “Nutritional scientists and epidemiologists should be cognizant of the public health messages that are taken away from their individual studies and not sensationalize the findings or contribute to the media frenzy around a single study,” The authors mention two separate studies that theorize a decreased risk of ovarian cancer due to flavonoids in red onions and omega-3 in sea bass. Both of these studies were reported as fact on a popular television talk show. The authors assert that with further research, three other studies

would have been found that can disprove the findings reported as true. The authors also stated: “The public needs more information about the effect of diet as a whole on cancer risk, as well as the importance of achieving and maintaining an ideal body weight, regular physical activity and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle,” Here is more of my take on “Miracle foods” or “ Super Foods”. Consume these foods with low expectations. I love when I see the cooking show with the Chefs pouring in the olive oil, as if more was better. Clients often tell me or brag about how they heard on Dr. Oz that avocados are a super food. However, those smiles quickly turn to frowns as I explain that one large avocado can have over 350 Calories (pure fat, yes monounsaturated fat.) But when you’re eating salsa with avocado as a snack or pouring olive oil into your favorite dish, use caution, as more is not always better. I obviously believe that certain foods can help prevent certain diseases. You may believe or not believe in miracles, but I would not believe in one food as being a miracle. It takes much more than just one food to make a difference. It is how often we eat, how much processed foods we are consuming, how much saturated fats, omega fatty acids, how much sodium, how much fiber and on and on. One food alone will never

create a miracle. I’m not saying that these foods are bad for you, but they must be consumed as any other food consciously, and in moderation. If only life was that simple. Remember, food is not good, bad, super or miraculous. Food is food. You are not a “bad” person if you eat something you consider “bad.” Nor, does being a vegan make you a perfect person. Remember, a healthy diet consists of the macronutrients and micronutrients we need: 1. Protein-Fish, Chicken, Turkey, eggs etc. 2. Complex Carbohydrates-Bread, Pasta, Rice etc. 3. Healthy Fats- olive oil, avocado, omega fatty acids from fish and nuts etc.. 4. Simple Carbohydrates: fruits and vegetables • Take Good Care,

BIEN DANS SA PEAU THERE IS A POPULAR

French expression, **bien dans sa peau**, that translates as being “well in her skin”. It relates to women and describes a general state of being rather than any one specific female feature. French women are known for their style and grace because they keep things simple. No overstuffed closets full of the latest “fast fashion”. No shopping just to shop. They buy fewer pieces of clothing but in a higher quality so that each garment they own honors and flatters the body. You can do this too. Knowing your style, honoring your body shape and making smart shopping decisions will help you look great on the outside but more importantly, build your confidence on the inside. When you spend your valuable time and money on pieces that you love,

2017 MAZDA CX-5 REVIEW It’s always nice when a car manufacturer makes a great vehicle even better. Mazda just did it with the redesigned 2017 CX-5. With rivals like the Honda CR-V, the Ford Escape, and the Toyota RAV-4, the new Mazda CX-5 more than holds its own. This is the 2nd generation CX5. It was first introduced in 2013, and the initial offering provided a responsive drive and all the utility. The 2017 CX-5 shines even brighter— more refined, more upscale, more technology—at a relatively low price and low cost of ownership. There’s little doubt the CX-5 will continue to be Mazda’s topselling vehicle. Though its dimensions haven’t changed, the ride is smoother and quieter. Other improvements include sharper styling, a more upscale cabin, and loads of technology. The engine and transmission are

mostly a carryover and you can choose between frontwheel drive, or an outstanding I-Activ all-wheel drive system for about $1,300 more. Gas mileage is 24/31 front-wheel drive and 23/29 all-wheel drive. The new CX-5 comes in four trim levels—the base model Sport, the Touring, the Grand Select, and the Grand Touring. All trims provide standard safety features like forward collision warning and low-speed emergency braking. Before, they were optional. Without getting too pricey, we like the Touring model which adds heated front seats,

advanced blind spot monitoring and leather wrapped steering wheel. You’ll need to step up to the Grand Select to get navigation. There is only one engine choice—a non turbo 2.5 liter four-cylinder which provides an adequate 187 horsepower. All trims offer a 7-inch touchscreen with Mazda’s Connect infotainment system, backup camera, push button start, 40/20/40 split rear seat, electronic parking brake, auto headlights and daytime running lights. The redesigned Mazda CX-5 offers an outstanding driving experience. Visibility is excellent, the seats are comfortable, and acceleration and braking are more than adequate. But the most impressive thing we noticed is its sharp and responsive steering and handling, even at higher speeds. This vehicle is nimble and athletic-- more so than most of its rivals. Mazda made the redesigned CX-5 even better with both subtle and luxurious changes, simplicity and new technology. For the money, if you are looking for 5-passenger utility, safety and reliability, this vehicle is a must-drive. •
