Providence

K N E A D D O N UTS It’s been the talk of the town since opening in December and all the talk is well deserved.

I SAW THEIR PICTURES and followed their journey through

Instagram (@kneaddoughnuts) for months leading up to the opening, and it was exciting to see it come to life! This adorable and aesthetically pleasing gourmet doughnut shop is conveniently located in the heart of down city Providence (32 Custom House, Providence RI). It wasn’t long before a quick competition came up for on the other end of the city! Overall, I personally prefer the taste of Knead’s doughnuts, but I’ve heard it’s about 50/50 from anyone who has tried both. It was a fairly cold and somewhat rainy day. My mom had surprised me with an appointment to get my tarot cards read at a friend of hers on the East Side. The reading was conveniently timed the very next morning after my break up, and my soul was clearly in dire need (Knead…) of some doughnuts. My mom and I spent probably ten minutesa trying to decide what we wanted, and I still could have taken longer! The two girls behind the counter were bubbly, enthusiastic and sweet! They sliced our doughnuts and carried them over to our table for us (we didn’t have enough hands), even though it’s not “sit-down” kind of dining.

Also, they were super patient with us while we made up our minds. Although, they did have some samples out for our tasting desires… (you’d think that would make the process easier! Nope…) We ended up sharing the Ginger Earl Grey, Brown Butter Toffee (possibly the most delicious thing I’ve ever put in my mouth) and a Honestly the Brown Butter Toffee (top/middle) was to-die-for. It was sugary sweet, but nutty and buttery all at once. The nut-crumble topping literally melts in your mouth, it’s not too crunchy which was a pleasant surprise! The glaze icing is crusted to perfection, as the My name is Laura and I w a s born and rai s e d right here in Little Rhody. The seating arrangement is cozy, open and light but also secluded. Overall, I’ll be going back to Knead for my donut necessities. There was no waiting in line, which was a huge selling point for me. I also loved that they let you pick from a selection of samples! It’s really a genius business technique. If you’ve yet to make your way to Knead, I highly recommend you do so. You won’t regret it! •

CLIENTS ARE ALWAYS

so proud to tell me, “Well, at least I don’t drink or smoke,” in spite of whatever eating issues they may have? OK, not smoking and avoiding alcohol are good enough virtues to have, but the fact remains that if you’re sitting in my of times that problem is eating too much, and food addiction is unlike other vices. At passing glance, I would never be able to tell if a person was a gambler, an overspender, a smoker, or a heavy drinker. If you’re a food addict, your addiction is visible. Your body broadcasts it with every bump and bulge on your body, and quite frankly, people will judge you. You can’t hide being obese or overweight, and it turns out it could affect your chances of landing your dream job. Do you think that’s right? I’m 100% certain that it’s wrong; it’s only

of alcohol or cigarettes, you might think twice about hiring them. We all know that people who smoke are out sick more than non smokers. Not to mention the frequent cigarette breaks, and their effect

on productivity. Would you hire someone who smokes? Personally I would choose the non-smoker over the smoker. While I think it’s wrong not to hire someone based on their physical appearance, we would do well to keep in mind that food does affect our mood. “Food Hangovers” are a real thing and could affect your productivity and attitude at work. Maybe you would call in sick more because of the co-morbidities related to obesity: Diabetes, Heart Disease, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, etc. Maybe you’re so addicted to food that you stay up late watching TV and eating, and that lack of sleep effects your work. So while I don’t think its right not to hire an overweight candidate, I do think we have a responsibility to take care of Maybe 2017, is the year to stop waking up with a “Food Hangover”? I am not here to judge you. I am here to offer you science based information. Hopefully, this will help you meet some of your health goals this year. Trust me, I know how you think. Design+ BUILD KITCHEN TRENDS 2017

JUST LIKE THE FASHION INDUSTRY, your home is also

a place that follows particular trends in design and function. Trends in the kitchen are very exciting for 2017. It is true that most people spend more than 3 years of their life in the kitchen. Therefore, it certainly makes sense for that space to be pleasing, comfortable, and welcoming for you, your family, and your guests. Our team of experts at Distefano Brothers Construction Inc. will help you make your vision a reality! Here are some tips on incorporating the trends of 2017 while maintaining your unique style. One way to personalize your kitchen is to inject your own personality into the space you have. Your home who you are. What sits on your countertop should make you happy and comfortable in your own space and welcome others to share in that enjoyment. mementos, vintage utensils…..whatever it may be that you enjoy looking at each day will help to make your kitchen a place of comfort and enjoyment, a place where you are happy to spend many hours. Personalizing your kitchen is a way to make your space current, yet different from others. It’s time to…..”Go Gray!!!” Color in kitchens has always been something that changes as the years pass. It is often easy to date a kitchen simply by noting the color….in the 50’s, kitchens were probably yellows and browns, 60’s were greens, 70’s were muted blues and mauve, and so on. Although white used in kitchens continues to be going strong, currently one of the popular kitchen colors is various walls. But….the newest and most exciting color is

14 OC E A N S TAT E MAY 2017

blue….and so many shades of blue. Kitchen cabinets are shown in high gloss blue with white accents, gold accents ( yes we said gold) and stainless steel appliances and looking gorgeous. Whether you prefer a dark navy blue, marine blue, or a softer hue in a muted tone with gray undertones, blue is the newest trend in today’s kitchen color scheme. If you can’t go gray or you don’t have the blues… …..”Think Black!!!!” Stainless steel continues to have it’s merits but can quickly dominate a room in a wash of silvery metal. Many major manufacturers have begun to introduce refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, and dishwashers in sophisticated shades of black and slate. The contrast of black or slate stainless steel with lighter cabinetry or walls creates a room that is timeless. 40 1 .783.1 03 0 When thinking about the i n fo @dbcri.com latest colors in kitchen 1 1 9 Main Street , designs, what to do about Wa ke f ield R I to mind. contrast. Warm wood is beautiful, rich-looking, and adds coziness to your room. If you prefer to keep the space light, there are a number of porcelain tiles, or light wood options to choose from that will compliment your cabinet and Also in keeping with trendy notions is the “connected” home and kitchen. Having Wi-Fi capability in your

home and connected to your appliances allows your home to think for you and almost run itself. How wonderful it is to wake up and smell the coffee, program the dishwasher you arrive home. Today, kitchen experts are designing spaces that hide microwaves, cell phones, i-pads and the Plugs, chargers, wires, and small appliances are hidden from view, yet right at hand. A connected kitchen and Kitchens in 2017 are becoming cleaner, meaning, there is a blend from traditional to transitional and transitional to contemporary. The lines are no longer drawn and clear cut

as they used to be. Kitchens are blending design and color, optimizing space with unique storage units and shelving designs, and incorporating open shelving whenever possible for displaying treasured objects. The style of your kitchen is often determined by the choices you make of what to display on the counter tops and open shelves, the wall art, and the lighting choices you make. It is easy to visualize a farmer’s sink in a contemporary kitchen design, or a sleek red cast iron sink in a rustic, country kitchen. Blending what appeals to you and adding your personal So, when thinking about the trends of 2017 for your kitchen, the wonderful thing is that the choices are vast with plenty of room for personalization. Although color trends come and go and can easily date a kitchen, when you choose neutral colors- grays, whites, blues, or black-you can easily add your favorite pop of color with fabric, decorative seasons or just on a whim, to give a whole new look to your to your home, so incorporating a space in your kitchen for tech pieces will add to your convenience. Your home, whether large or small, is your palace. The trends of 2017 allow you to make your space your own. Personalizing your kitchen with what makes you happy a welcome to all who enter. •

TAX ISSUES FOR ONLINE SELLERS A POPULAR TREND is to sell items online. Your online

activity could be one of the outlets to reach customers in your trade or business or it could be the way you choose to sell unwanted household items. The tax issues to consider are income and sales taxes. A state will subject a business to income and/or sales taxes if your activity has nexus with the state. Nexus means you have a presence in a state. Typically, such presence is a physical presence. Physical presence is created when you have property or people in a state. In addition, many states are now considering

economic nexus which means your business is conducting economic activity in a state and accessing its market even though your business does not have physical presence. States imposing economic nexus is often referred to as the factor presence standards to determine if such nexus exists. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

18 OC E A N S TAT E MAY 2017

WHEN PEOPLE LOOK AT YOU,

what do you want them to know about you? As humans, we all want to be known, and our dress is another form of communicating to others. I teach women how to cultivate their own personal style by honoring their individuality and the body they inhabit right now – not the one they had 10 years or 10 pounds ago. Are you honoring your current self? Or are you punishing yourself by waiting to go shopping until you’ve lost weight, started working out, or [insert reason here]? What if you clothed your body in you feel good? What would that communicate to others?

We’ve all seen women wearing clothes that are obviously too tight, and it’s uncomfortable to see. On the other hand, some women are hiding under clothes that are much too big. In the years after I had my kids, I beat myself up over my “baby belly” tops that better suited my premotherhood shape. They made me feel bad about myself and actually highlighted the very area that I didn’t like. When I trained as a stylist and learned about body types, I had an aha! moment: This is my shape now. I can

way and move on. I don’t wear my old clingy pre-baby tops anymore – they no longer serve me and the body I inhabit today. You can have the same liberation. If your body has changed or you’ve gained weight and it’s been around a while, get rid of the too small sizes that make you feel like crap when you open your closet. Accept your you now. Don’t worry about the size size doesn’t matter. I know a woman who is not traditionally beautiful, thin or young (the horror!) and she wears her body. She shows her personality

and is comfortable in her own skin. She always wears red lipstick and when I am with her I am mesmerized. Her authentic style is powerful. Going to run errands and pick up the kids. It is now almost 7 p.m. and you are hungry and tired. And someone asks “What is for dinner?” You have no idea. You are exhausted, ravenous and have no clue what is for dinner. You did not plan or prepare. You are going to make the easy choice, not the healthy choice. What has started as a great “food” day has evolved into another “bad” food day. You and your family decide to order Chinese. Later in the evening, you are sitting alone and the bag of chips is calling your name. Before you know it, you consumed half the bag. You decide to go to bed. You wake up in the night when your blood sugar drops. Now you cannot get back to bed. Long story short, you wake up with a “Food Hangover”: tired, thirsty, sleep deprived and you have a headache. Now you get on the scale…you are up 3 more pounds. You are disgusted with yourself. You have just self sabotaged yourself into starting your day in a very bad way. I do not want this for you. The main reason you ended up having a “bad” food day is because you did not plan or prepare. You came home hungry, tired and unprepared. I am not here to judge, I am here to help you. You can wake up with a “Food Hangover” everyday. Or you can wake up feeling well rested (because you exercised) and well nourished. You weight yourself and you are down 2 pounds. You try on clothes and they feel less snug than just a few weeks ago. You decide how you want to start your day.

The three powertrain options are distinctly different. The electric version is completely electric, with no need for gasoline. Ever.
