the place everyone's going this month

& why you should too { the farmer's daughter }

The other day I made a Christmas Playlist on Spotify (Usually, such a fan of Sirius Radio but this year, their Holiday music channels are lacking. I mean, when I don't hear Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" at least twice a day, that's a prob.) and then, we motored over to The Farmer's Daughter in So Kingstown. If you haven't seen any of my gushing, love letter-esque posts about it being a key destination in the OS in the Spring (Easter) and for Autumn (Harvest & Halloween), then let me tell you that I'm equally obsessed during December. To me, it is PERFECT (Love Actually...winky face!). Anywho, you cannot have a bad day (or take a bad photo) there because it's essentially your fav Pinterest Boards or Rustic/Farmhouse Instagram accounts come to life. So, definitely take that personal day and make an afternoon of it. Grab some coffee and pastry over at nearby TLC Coffee Roasters (Last I checked, they had an entire bar of iced coffee options. I always order one of their lemon poppy seed muffins.), then, explore TFD and it's festive greenhouses, sheds, and gardens til Patty J. is c hief your heart's content. The Newport Cliff Walk is a beautiful view and one of our favorites for showing off the beautiful coast line and getting some height so you can see the lay of the land. We also usually go to Federal Hill and eat some good Italian food. Other big draws are the RISD Museum, the East Bay Bike Trail which runs right by our house, and a drive down Benefit St to see the gorgeous architecture. 10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers? Explore anything and everything you can while you have a chance, and don’t be disheartened by “failures” as some of the best ideas can be unexpected results from attempts to make something completely different. If you want to be a professional, understand that it is a small business and you must persevere and most importantly stay in business. Follow your own inspirations but don’t hesitate to learn from others as well. •

health

I’ve dappled with practicing yoga at home on and off for about 5 years now. And by “on and off” I mean “mostly off”. I can admit that. Regardless, every time I get into it, it’s the same… This is great! I feel so relaxed! I’m not compulsively biting my nails or squeezing my blackheads! What is this feeling of balance and calm?! I love it and I never want it to go away! And then I inevitably fall off the wagon and go back to being my anxiety ridden, bad habit practicing, nut ball self. Part of the reason for this, is that it has been really hard to find a yoga app/video series/ YouTube channel that I like. A membership to a yoga studio just isn’t in my budget, and with any fitness app I’ve tried, I eventually stop because it gets boring doing exactly the same thing every day. I don’t want to know what my next 8 moves are going to be; I want to be challenged.

FINDING THE RIGHT APP

2 18 OC E A N S TAT E DECEMBER 2017

About 2 months ago I decided that I really wanted to practice yoga at home and incorporate it into my daily routine. For good this time. I fired up the old App Store on my phone and started searching. Pretty quickly, I came across an app called Down Dog. I don’t know who made it, but they are a freaking genius. In the app you can select the type of practice you want (full, quick flow, restorative), your level of expertise (beginner 1’s holla at me), and how many minutes you want to practice, and it will produce a randomized sequence

for you, complete with warm up and cool down. The best part is that it’s free. FREE! There are a few additional settings you can tweak with the paid version (style of music, focusing on a particular area, etc), which is $50 a year. Not bad, not bad at all.

INVEST IN A GOOD MAT

I started out with a mat that I found at Marshall’s quite a few years ago. But as I kept at it, I realized that it just wasn’t cutting it. It wrinkled too easily and didn’t feel great on my knees, so I decided to invest in a new one. I wasn’t totally convinced that there was such a thing as a superior yoga mat, but I went for it and invested in a plain black one from Lululemon. I have to admit, it’s a damn nice mat. It’s surprisingly heavy, so it doesn’t lift up and wrinkle when I’m changing positions, and it doesn’t hurt my knees. Mission accomplished. As of now, I’ve been practicing yoga at home almost every morning for about 2 months, and I feel great. And now that I have my trusty mat and app, there’s no reason for me to ever stop.•

8 Truths About Building a Custom House Putting some of the old rumors away with these truths. PUT DOWN THE LISTINGS

and continue reading below… We are about to clear the air about some rumors that tend to circle around the new construction industry.

CUSTOM HOUSES DO NOT COST MORE TO BUILD

This seems to be one of the biggest misconceptions out there. Understandably so. A custom house will not cost any more than a spec house of equivalent features. As you add additional features to your home, a complete built-in for example, the price does increase. With that said, it does not increase any more than it would if that same feature was in a spec house.

YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR FINISHES

We can work with you to either set a budget for fixtures throughout the house, or you are welcome to provide your own and have us install them during the build. You have your own tastes, so we don’t want to restrict you — after all, it is your house!

NO, YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE LAND FIRST

Many think, “How could I build a custom house if I don’t own any land for it?” Often, builders will have lots available to build custom homes on like these in Smithfield, or these in North Smithfield. What happens if you aren’t in love with the lots that we have available?

22 OC E A N S TAT E DECEMBER 2017

We will work with you and our realtor team to find the one for you. When it comes to finances, many lenders will work with you to put the land and build loans into one.

YOUR HOUSE DOES NOT NEED TO COMPLETELY MODEL THE DRAWING

Just because you had your house drawn and designed, doesn’t mean that it needs to be exactly the same from model to real life. With options such as: Vinyl Cedar Cement board It is very common for customers to change the siding type or color once they see the house framed in front of them. If this happens you are always welcome to speak your mind. We are a design · build — so if you have something in mind, we can always have it drawn up for you to help make your decision.

YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR FLOORING THROUGHOUT Tile Hardwood Laminate Carpet Concrete This is your house and we aren’t tied down to one particular style or material. We will give you an allowance to purchase your flooring and it is up to you to find what you like the most!

FLOOR PLANS ARE NOT SET IN STONE

People tend to think that once the

plans are drawn up that they are now set in stone. If you think that another layout will work better for your family then be sure to say so. The earlier on that you do this the better! We won’t take offense, we have a great team that can promptly redesign floor plans to help get you exactly what you want.

YOU WILL BE INVOLVED IN DECISIONMAKING One of the biggest fears of potential custom home buyers is that they will be left out of the loop and not involved in important decisions. Breathe easier knowing that we will keep you involved with decisions — again, this is your custom house.

WE ARE HERE FOR YOU

The home buying/building process for customers can be very stressful. We understand that, which is why we try to go above and beyond to make you feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible throughout the process. • info@ohearnehd. com 401-632-9856 With a passion for building a home crafted for your family, O’Hearne Home Development focuses on creating unique and spectacular homes.
