One of my goals for the year is to work out 4 times a week, or Monday-Thursday. It probably isn’t much to some people (my sister, the collegiate field hockey player, is probably rolling her eyes at me right about now), but I’ve struggled to keep myself active on any sort of schedule ever since I stopped having a school team to work out with, so here we are. I’m thinking about doing another post on the best workout apps to use at the gym, but for now we’ll stick to the basics: gym bag essentials. I think the best way to do this is to visualize how you want your workout to go, and then write down all the stuff you’ll need as you think about needing it. First up? You’ll be carrying your

What if I take up boxing and need to carry those big gloves around? What if I start playing soccer and need cleats and shin pads and all that? What if I have an important interview and I need to go to the gym beforehand and then get changed and ready there before heading to said interview? None of these things will happen to me. But I like to be prepared.

So once you get to the gym, you go up to the locker room and change. So you’ll need a workout outfit (yes, I know, so far this is a groundbreaking list of gym bag essentials), including sneakers, sports bra, top and bottom.

JOUNCE is the next generation of an exercise called “rebounding,” which became popular in the 1980s through a study by NASA, which found that trampoline-based exercise increases oxygenation to the cells in your body. NASA studies reported that “rebounding” has unique benefits compared to other forms of exercise because it involves increasing our G-force. G-force refers to the force created on the body as a result of acceleration or gravity. When you jump on a trampoline, your body is momentarily exposed to a small G-force. NASA determined that because of the G-force, rebounding was twice as effective as running.

1. Tell us about your work My work is different than traditional glassblowing: it is a more sturdy type of glass that melts under a very different process, allowing me to create a wide variety of small-scale designs that most people don’t normally see. 2. Is there a story behind the name of your business? I wanted a business name to be whimsical with good visualization, while also pertaining to one of my passions. Glass Sails fits well with my constant wonderlust! 3. How did you come to be a professional artist/ crafter/designer? I love anything mystical: fairies, ghosts, potions, dragons, etc. So you’ll notice magical elements in my pieces. Nature is mystical to me too! So I like to create a lot of leaves and floral designs. I’m a huge lover of animals, and sea-creatures work naturally with the molten, rounded properties of glass. That’s why there are so many octopus pieces at my booth. And finally, fan art is just fun! Candide Music by Leonard Bernstein, Music Direction by Jean Maxon-Carpenter Feb 16 & 23 at 7 pm Tickets: $10 Candide is a semi-staged, concert version of Leonard Bernstein’s work – in celebration of the centenary of his birth. Candide (1999 version) is the final revision of Leonard Bernstein’s operetta, originally composed and performed in 1953. A musical retelling of Voltaire’s satire, we follow Candide as he is expelled from home, suffers many and various misfortunes, and is repeatedly separated from his true love, Cunegonde. Through it all, and in the end, they try to remember the lesson they learned from their teacher, Dr. Pangloss: “Everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.” Although the story is from the 18th century, with music originally conceived in the mid-20th century, the messages are still timely today. This show is part of the Springboard Season, full of new and developing projects proposed by community and ensemble members. Hear Me Roar Directed by Kelly Robertson Mar 2 at 7 pm Tickets: $10 Hear Me Roar is a devised theatrical performance in which local artists perform their own manifestos. These artist manifestos, defined as “a public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of an artist or artistic movement,” are not only inspiring and vulnerable, but the performers (some of which are stepping on stage for the first time) also created masterful movement, adding a spectacle to accompany their writing. Ultimately, the show is a jampacked hour of unbelievable talent from people just like you – Hear Me Roar is a chance to follow their journey and reignite your own. Exterior Finishes Enhancing Your Custom Home Value WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT HOUSE FEATURES that catch our eye. Maybe it

is the beautiful front door, the custom window trim, or even great outside areas for the family. The beauty of a custom home is that you have the ability to make your home be eye-catching with the features you enjoy the most. The best part is that these don’t have to break the budget to do so! They are simple little add-ons to your custom home build that can really help increase the value of your home.

A FRONT DOOR TO DREAM OF

Solid, glass, stained, or painted, front doors have the ability to make your house POP at first impression. With so many options available it is easy to find one that fits your style. Some of the door styles we find that best grab attention are: Craftsman doors — these are beautiful doors that add a subtle elegance to the front of your house. Using features such as recessed/raised panels and well-placed glass, these doors are a true mark of someone who appreciates high-quality work. Doors with sidelites and/or transoms — talk about a great way to add light into your home. These both do so in a

tasteful way. You will often see these doors with decorative glass panels adding some tasteful beauty to your home. Front door Top-arched doors — a truly unique door that can add a lot of character to your house. These are certainly a great way to make your house stand out in the crowd. Solid panel door — the traditional front door that has stood the test of time. Keep your house tastefully simply by staining or painting this door to go with your home. For a more modern/trendy look, I recommend painting it with a bright color that really makes it stand out.

CROWN YOUR HOME WITH GREAT WINDOW TRIM While, not often thought of when picking out features for your home, window trim is a strong way to beef-up the curb appeal of your custom home. Let’s take a look at the difference between conventional trim and custom trim on these two exterior windows: The difference speaks for itself. While both of these windows are on very nice homes, this shows the simple way to add to your home. You can choose from the following options to name a few:

ADDING CROWN OVER THE WINDOWS

Adding trim on all 4 sides of the windows Enhancing the trim on just one feature area of the house or on every window No matter what route you go with, you will certainly be happy with the end result.

TAKE THE FUN OUTSIDE

Every family has different needs and tastes. Some may enjoy a beautiful farmers porch on the front of their house while others may want a nice walkout patio in the back yard that is perfect for barbecuing and lounging with friends and family. Some great things to keep in mind when going with either of

22 OCE A N S TAT E FEBRUARY 2017

these routes: Dress up your porch — use decorative columns to wrap your standard 4×4 or 6×6 posts. Add to that with crown and base features such as what is seen below. Front exterior trim Try stamped concrete for your patio — with many different styles available these days, try using stamped concrete to dress up your patio to really impress your friends and family next time you host a party. These three ways are simple ways to enhance your curb appeal of your custom house. Use this as a spring-board to your own ideas for what would best catch your eye. When you are ready to begin discussing your ideas for your future custom home, feel free to contact us and we will be glad to help! •
