He is inspired to change his ways and is wholly transformed by the spirit of Christmas. A heartwarming tale perfect for the whole family! THERE'S A BRAND NEW SECRE T BAR & YOU'LL WANT TO GO THIS WEEKEND A FRIEND'S YOGA STUDIO
just so happens to be in a space that used to be an actual speakeasy during the Prohibition Era. Secret, or hidden in plain sight, bars continue to be a thing all these years later, but now it's more about exclusivity and being in the know, as opposed to say needing to stay off Eliot Ness' radar or something. I'm guessing you're already familiar with the handful in Providence (one on Atwells, another in Olneyville) circa now, but there's this brand-y new one in the mix that you're going to want to check out this soon. For starters, it's only open on weekends. (Maybe Thurs nights too? Idk.) Also, unless you're out actively looking and searching for it, you'd probably motor or stroll right on by. The exterior's obviously been completely redone and looks fab, but there are no signs of any kind saying it's a lounge,
watering hole or what have you. When we approached the main door, for a second I thought we might need a code or something because of the key pad and ginormous button nearby. But no, not even a special knock. We walked in the other night and were greeted by (true story) the best customer service I've ever been privy to in any uber cool city bar. So welcoming! The interior is all dim mood lighting (making decent phone photos close to impossible...consider yourself warned), candles, and exposed brick. The OCD, Type A in me was beyond impressed by the fact that the first thing you get after being seated is a hot towel for cleaning your hands. Next, the menus. The drink options are extensive (I had something Moscow Mule meets sweet potato -ish.) and should please even the most persnickety of your friends and frenemies, including but

Throw Your Best Holiday PART Y E V E R
Until a few years ago, I could count the number of parties I planned or hosted on one hand. As I child, I randomly decided one day to make invitations and ask the neighborhood children to my backyard for pre-suppertime candy. It was a bust - no one responded or showed and I ended up sitting on our patio alone, with a sad bag of Hershey's kisses. In college, the few parties I had consisted of me procuring the largest and most inexpensive bottles of wine I could get my hands on (Yellowtail!!) and setting them out with a bag of Tostitos (not in a bowl). Adulthood brought on several failed dinner parties with overly complicated menus or too little/too much food, and gasp...not enough chairs for everyone! I wouldn’t say I had the best track record when it came to parties. When event planning became a part of my duties at my job a few years ago, I quickly discovered that party planning is an art form of sorts. It’s a delicate balance between making the guests happy and creating an event you yourself are proud of, while at the same time accounting for every possible thing that could go wrong. As holiday season approaches us, I thought I might offer a few of my top party planning dos and don'ts...many of them learned the hard way! Adjust and tweak them to fit your size and type

featured wedding
Katie and Aaron had a gorgeous day for a wedding. They met at their house for their first look, and traveled together to their ceremony at Mount Hope Farm. Before they were married, they signed the katuba surrounded by their closest family members. Ever the independent Bride, Katie walked herself down the aisle, and her and Aaron both stomped the glass after being married under the huppa. The celebrations continued late into the night, with some amazing speeches from the bride and groom’s family, and tons of raucous dancing. •

1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK
I primarily design and create steampunk hats and accessories, however I have done work that runs the gamut from weddings to holidays. I call it "~ Steampunk Fashion ~ Where you can creatively combine the sensibilities of Victorian style with your all-out rebellious attitude ~"
2. IS THERE A STORY BEHIND THE NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS?
I was born, raised and live in New England. We use the expression 'Wicked' as a superlative. Add to that a New Englander would say 'hawt' not 'hot' and you have Wicked Hawt Studio.
3. HOW DID YOU COME TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST/ CRAFTER/DESIGNER? I've enjoyed drawing, painting, sewing and design most of my life. For the past few years,
10 OCE A N S TAT E NOVEMBER 2017
I have done creative costuming, mostly in the Steampunk genre, including making my own hats. Recently, my friends have encouraged me to share those designs and creations, thus my Studio was born.
5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM TO CREATE?
RHODE ISLAND?
4. WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?
6. WHAT’S YOUR BEST SELLER?
Every item is a one of a kind. I may do something similar, but no two pieces are ever the same. Men's hats right now are good sellers.
9. FAVORITE PLACE TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWNERS?
Steampunk is a genre. There is a look to it... I love the drape of the clothing and the creativity of the design. I keep an inventory of supplies so that when something hits me, I can put my thoughts to work right away. I also do custom orders and work with clients to bring their vision to life. Sometimes it is pictures they send me with ideas and we go from there, but there is always a conversation about colors, style, materials etc. From there, they let the artist (me) have creative reins after those discussions.
Oh I just love doing hats. All kinds of hats. Feathers and flowers, leather and brass gears. I love it all.

YOU’LL EVE
I’ve been meaning to tackle this post for awhile now. Mostly because I thought the changing seasons would make people more likely to read it, but also because I freaking love outerwear. A good jacket is a lot like a good pair of shoes; it can instantly take your tee shirt and jeans from basic to a full on look. For that reason, I have quite a few pieces on this list. You might decide you don’t need all 11, and that is totally fine. These types of wardrobe essentials lists can be customized to fit each person’s personal style, and their day-to-day lives. With that being said, here are my 11 outerwear essentials: THE DENIM JAKCE T
R A E W R E O U T R NEED

The denim jacket is a great transitional wardrobe piece; it’s not exactly warm but denim is heavy enough to shield you from the nippy winds of early October. Let’s face it: you can wear this piece with pretty much anything in your wardrobe (I think it looks particularly nice layered over a feminine sundress). Although I will warn that contrasting washes are important when going for a Canadian tuxedo look, so make sure your jacket is a light wash if your jeans are dark, or vice versa. I currently own a medium wash from the men’s section of Levi’s, though I just ordered another one in a lighter wash from the Shopbop sale and am hoping that it offers a more fitted

The anorak is another great transitional piece that offers a little bit more of a slouchy vibe. They make great casual weekend wear, and can be layered with a hoodie relatively easily (a la Olivia Palermo in the above photo). I personally think it looks great layered over a simple tee shirt dress with some chucks. I’ve actually been on the lookUpdate: it arrived while I was in the process of out for the perfect anorak for awhile now, because writing this, and it runs really wide in the shoul- I don’t love the ones with excessive pull ties, but ders, I’d recommend sizing down if you order one. I’m starting to narrow in on a few options. I swear.

Whether you use it to add some edge to a feminine dress, or throw it over your sweats, the leather jacket is an instant outfit maker. I scored my first leather jacket back in college, it was by Steve Madden and on super sale for $80. I wore that thing to DEATH. Literally, it died. I no longer own a leather jacket, but I am hoping to save up some money for one from The Arrivals in the future. They are a killer outerwear brand and I am totally in love with their leather pieces. Less expensive options can be found at Nordstrom (BLANKNYC comes to mind), and the go-to high end brand is definitely Acne. P H O T O V I A C R Y S TA L I N M A R I E .
TRECH COAT
5 24 OCE A N S TAT E NOVEMBER 2017
Think of trench coats as the sophisticated cousin of the light jacket family. They help you look instantly put together, and are a great piece to have in your work wardrobe. They also work really well with Breton stripes (as seen here) for the weekends, and are particularly useful for remaining mysterious when dropping off secret documents at a pre-determined rendezvous. Heh heh.

I had to include the classic blazers older brother, mostly because this particular Stella McCartney number haunts my dreams and I will not rest until it is mine one day. If you aren’t into menswear, then by all means, exclude this item from your list. But I love a good menswear inspired jacket, especially when it is super tailored and crisp. This photo might be my favorite outfits ever photographed. Sigh.
THE RAIN COAT
THE BOYFRIEND BL AZER
A good bomber jacket lends a sporty military vibe to your outfit, while also letting you play with volume/proportions. I love a good bulky jacket, so I’m all for this look, but it might not be for everyone. Again, these pair well with everything from workout gear to an elevated off duty look. I prefer the classic styles in army green, and nothing embroidered or embellished. That way it will be sure to last you season after season.

Speaking of work wardrobes, do I even need to explain this one? Not only is it a staple at the office, but a classic blazer is a great way from taking your tee shirt and jeans from “I didn’t feel like thinking when getting dressed this morning” to “I am naturally this chic and put together at all times”. I don’t know about you, but any piece that can do that is a favorite of mine. Because who doesn’t want to wear a tee shirt and jeans all the time?

Depending on whether or not some of your other coats (anorak, trench, etc) are rain resistant, you may also want to pick up a rain coat. Weather does exist after all, and there’s really nothing worse than getting caught in the rain and then being damp all day. I really like the raincoats from Stutterheim, but there are plenty of other options. If you can’t find one that’s your style, then an umbrella with a good diameter will also do the trick. THE PUFFER
When it’s really cold out, like actually winter, you’re going to want a down jacket. Puffers are both casual and super warm, and there’s nothing more appropriate to throw on over your sweats to go shovel the driveway. They also allow you to play with volume with your outfit, which is something I’m always a fan of. Got big clunky snow boots on? Balance it out with a big puffy jacket.
9
The second option for a heavy jacket is a tailored overcoat. Based on your preference, you could opt for a peacoat or something longer. Either way, it’s a more formal option that is great for the office, date nights, or just looking a little more put together compared to the puffer jacket. Personally, I love longer overcoats that are super tailored or have a cocoon style. I try to avoid this word because I think it’s extremely overused in the fashion industry, but they just look so chic. 26 OCE A N S TAT E NOVEMBER 2017

Last, but certainly not least, is the fur coat. Whether you prefer them real or faux, the fur coat is a great hybrid of the formality of the structured overcoat and the volume of a puffer. And it gives the additional element of texture. What more could you ask for? Obviously this is not a 100% necessity, but it is definitely an item that is on my list. You can stick to a simple neutral color, or go all out with a pattern or statement color, it depends on your personal style and how much you want it to be a statement piece. New England Institute of Technology Trains Tomorrow’s Auto Technicians
TRAINING TOMORROW’S AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIANS IN RI The technology, electronics and components built into today’s cars, trucks and SUVs are more sophisticated than ever. Vehicles may be safer and more comfortable but they still need to be repaired and maintained, and sometimes when they break, it’s complicated. Dealerships and auto service facilities have expressed concerns for a while now that it’s difficult to train and even find qualified auto technicians. Dealers are selling plenty of cars, but they also need service techs with the right skill set to fix these complex vehicles. In the Rhode Island area, you don’t have to look far to find where the automotive technicians of tomorrow are being trained today. You’ve likely driven right by it many times traveling on Interstate 95. That place is New England Institute of Technology in Warwick. The Automotive Technology Department at NEIT provides in-depth study in the application of the most current trends in the automotive field. There are automotive associate degree programs in: Automotive Technology, Advanced Automotive Technology, Automotive Technology with High Performance, plus related programs in Auto Body and Collision Repair Technology, and a Bachelor of Science degree program in Automotive Service Management. Students who graduate NEIT are well on their way to ASE or ICAR certification. “This is so much more than turning a wrench. These are associate degree programs. Six quarters over 18 months. Students take both technical classes and academic classes to earn their degree,” says Virgilio Tavares, Assistant Professor and Assistant Department Chair in NEIT’s Transportation Technologies department. “We try to replicate real world automotive service and repair experiences in a classroom setting.” New England Tech At the center of NEIT’s Automotive Technology Department is an enormous 24,000 sq. ft. climate- controlled automotive “classroom” off Jefferson Boulevard. It boasts 42 service bays and students learn and perform the skills associated with engine repair and design, brakes, suspensions, transmission and ignition systems, climate control, electronics and much more. The facility contains the latest in automotive repair technology including six Hunter wheel alignment machines. “When we made the move into this building approximately twelve years ago, none of the old equipment we had in the previous location came over. It’s all brand new state of the art equipment,” according to
Tavares. New England Tech collaborates with NATEF, the National Automotive Technician’s Education Association. “National Automotive Technician’s Education Foundation (NATEF), We follow the NATEF curriculum so students know all of the tasks required once they leave here,” according to Tavares. “But it’s not just the mechanical aspects. With the electronics and technology, use of a laptop, reading and math—that’s all very important. So the associate degree program develops a well-rounded student. You can’t repair a car today without understanding information and instructions.” “To become an automotive student here at New England Tech, no prior automotive experience is necessary. That’s what this program is for. Believe it or not, most of our student population did not go to a technical high school.” According to Tavares, the instructors are always learning too. “As educators, we have to complete many hours of professional development and training every year to stay current with the changes and new technologies. One of our goals is to keep our instructors ASE certified at the master level. As new technology comes out, we have to add it to our existing curriculum.” NEIT has relationships with Fiat Chrysler, Ford and Subaru. Students have the opportunity to earn certifications through Ford and Subaru in addition to their associate degree. NEIT automotive instructors train Fiat Chrysler incumbent service technicians and incorporate those skills into the student curriculum so they benefit as well. The NEIT Automotive Technology program also offers elective courses in alternative fuels–hybrid vehicles, light duty diesel, and compressed natural gas. And across the parking lot at the auto body and collision facility, they utilize two paint booths and two frame machines for students to sharpen their skills. The instructors are ICAR certified. After completion of the associate degree program, some students may elect to continue in the Automotive Service Management Bachelor’s degree program. It’s designed for students who want to go into management, be a service consultant or advisor, or seek to own their own shop. “The good news is there’s still interest from young people in learning about cars–how they work, how to repair them and how to make them go faster. And the students know they can make a very nice living in this field,” adds Tavares. “We can’t fill all the job openings that are posted by our career services department. We get calls on a daily basis so there are a lot of opportunities for our students once they graduate.” •
