BIRTHDAYS ARE AN EXCUSE TO DO SOMETHING

you normally wouldn't do, and unless you're willing to sign your life away and skydive, finding that something can be difficult. Also, the last year of your twenties is definitely a big deal. So, with this in mind, it was my boo's birthday, and I wanted to make it one he'd never forget. After searching Google for days, I came across Bird's Eye View Helicopter Tours located in Middletown - the perfect combination of adventure and romance!

I WENT WITH THE SKY AND SEA GANSETT CRUISE PACKAGE. The helicopter ride was

We also did the Island Tour, so we saw all of Newport, and everything around it - mansions and non-mansions, bridges, vineyards, etc. Spoiler Alert, you'll never look at Newport the same way again - Everything looks so beautiful from 20,000 feet in the sky! #HighlyRecommended •

artist 6. What’s your best seller? My Sunny Day soap. It looks and smells like a sunny day at the beach. Both Rhode Islanders and tourists love it. It’s a great Rhode Island memento that can be enjoyed year round.

Mo nster Ru bb er Ducky S oap $6. 00

1. Tell us about your work. I’m a small batch maker of vegan artisan soaps; designing, mixing, and cutting one batch at a time in my home in Rhode Island. I make my soaps using the cold process method, completely from scratch using high quality butters and food grade oils. I then cure my soaps for 4-6 weeks before packaging them. I also enjoy making sugar scrubs, body sprays, bath truffles and bath salts. 2. Is there a story behind the name of your business? Yes! My sister and I are very close and from the time we were little she loved everything pink while I loved everything blue. We even made a pact that when we are old and grey she would dye her hair pink and I would dye mine blue, hence, I’m The Blue Sister! 3. How did you become a professional artist/crafter/ designer. Completely by accident! My youngest went off to college and I found myself with an empty nest. I decided to take a soap making class just for fun. Before I knew it I was hooked. My house was filled with soap, my friends and family had enough bars to last a lifetime, and no one could get in the kitchen because my equipment covered the counters. I turned into the crazy soap lady!

Erika Smith moved to Rhode Island in 2008 and immediately began exploring. Wi t h t h e l a u n c h of I {heart} R h o d y i n 2 0 1 0, s h e c o n t i n u e s to find the fun in her new home state, and share it with h e r r e a d e r s . i h e a r t r h o d y. c o m

7. How long have you lived in RI? About 18 years with short stints in Singapore and Connecticut, though we have owned a home in South County during that time. 8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island? I absolutely {heart} the gorgeous beaches and beautiful coastline! 9. Favorite Place to take out of towners. Well again, the beach! But also Newport, Watch Hill, and my favorite restaurant Ella’s Fine Food and Drink in Westerly. 10. Any advice for new/ wannabe makers? First, be passionate about your craft, love what you make and others will too. Watch lots of YouTube videos! There are so many wonderful artists who are kind enough to share their expertise. I’ve learned so much from them. 11. Please include anything else you would like to add. I think everyone should be able to treat their bodies the way they were meant to be treated; with a little love from chemicalfree products. Stores today are flooded with overpriced skincare products that are harmful to our bodies and our planet, and I truly believe that giving people environmentally friendly, affordable, and enjoyable bars of soap is a small step on the path towards a better beauty industry. •

4. Where do you draw your inspiration? I my find inspiration everywhere. The ocean, the forest, and my flower garden have inspired many a bar. But sometimes I simply come across a candle, shampoo, or delicious dessert and think, “I have to make soap that smells like that!” 5. What’s your favorite item to create? I made a rubber ducky soap special for my grandson, but it turned out customers loved them too. I’ve since expanded the line to include mermaid, pirate, monster, unicorn, and holiday themed rubber duck soaps. I can’t make them fast enough and each time I complete a batch they always make me smile and giggle. They are just so cute!

Dog Mom in the Ocean State

I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE... B. and I took Goldendoodle Louie to the Dog Parade Stroll on Main Street in EG a few years back (when he was still technically a pup) and he proceeded to jump excitedly at just about every single dog going by. Hellooo, mortified! One woman was apparently so annoyed she handed us a business card for a dog trainer (insert eye roll here). So, full disclosure, he was on leash the whole time - and a doodle for Pete's sake - but that didn't save us from some major embarrassment. There's another Dog Stroll tonight and even though we're probably banned or something (jk), I highly encourage all doggie pawrents out there to give it a whirl. And in case you're looking for more ways to upgrade your dog Patty J. is mom lifestyle this season, consider chief c ontent creator at , these other local options:

2. IT HAPPENS TO THE BEST OF US. Maybe we don't get all talk-y about it, but leaving our dog home alone, even for a few hours, can be extremely difficult (the separation anxiety, the sadness, the questions...What is she doing right now? Does she miss me? Is she eating the new throw rug?). No more doggie mom or dad guilt though because Ruffin Wranglers has these outdoor excursion packages where they pick up your pooch, bring them out to a sprawling stretch of greenery and trees to run and play with other dogs, and then chauffeur them safely back to your house. (Not available in all areas of RI. Check out RuffinWranglers.com for details.)

3. BARK MEETS BLING... Our friends over at Providence Diamond are teaming up with the ppl at Potter League in Newport (They do so much to help abandoned or displaced animals find loving, fur-ever homes.) to offer a brand new Potter League Collection. Renderings FOR CUSTOM

HBuilding OME 14 OCE A N S TAT E JULY 2018

It may seem nonchalant to the average viewer watching from their couch. But for those who have, are, or will be going through a home build, it is quite a helpful tool.

PROVIDES YOU WITH A VISION

It’s tough to comprehend a set of house plans when they are laid in front of you. How are you supposed to take all of the lines and numbers on it and process it to see what you will be getting in your custom home build? These 3D renderings take the plans you are reading and bring them to life, providing you with a vision and feel, as you move through the house. As you begin to see your house being constructed, you will have a clearer idea of the whole process.

SEE A CHANGE BEFORE MAKING ONE

Homeowners will often walk through a house throughout the various stages and think of changes they could make based off of what they are seeing.

Have you ever thought of a great idea, but when it was all done you weren’t a big fan of it? That’s because things don’t always translate well from your vision to real life. One way to help with this is to use 3D renderings to give a better representation of the final outcome. It is so rewarding to tell a customer something can be done and bring those ideas to life in front of them so that they are as comfortable as possible throughout the entire build. If you’d like to talk with us about building a custom home, feel free to contact us here! •

with fashion like it was yesterday. First, I noticed a coat that was featured in my Mom’s Vogue magazine. The model was wearing this amazing plum colored plaid coat with brown fur cuffs, collar, and trim (I may be dating myself…) and once I saw it I couldn’t stop staring at it. I didn’t know clothes could be that beautiful. Where did you even get something like that? Soon afterwards I was at the mall with my Mom while she ran some errands. Walking by the store windows, I started to notice pieces that I liked and outfits on mannequins that looked good Becky Freeman is a native Rhode together, and started Islander who mentally putting things lives and works in Providence. together for different She uses her fictional events and blog, Fashion Food Fotos, to share her people in my head. life tips, experiences, and I honestly had never musings, along with her favorite recipes, outfits, thought twice about travel, and beauty tips. clothes before. Otherwise it can be really crowded with items you don’t need to be looking at. I’ve found numerous deals on Michael Kors and Stuart Weitzman shoes in particular here.

All of a sudden it’s like I was seeing a whole new section of life that I hadn’t even known about. How were people not more excited about this?! Like many teenage girls, I enjoyed going to the mall and shopping with my friends. The potential of a new outfit was exciting and I was always on the hunt. There was just one problem: I usually couldn’t afford the things that I liked (unfortunately, I still deal with this problem). So, in order to find things that I could actually purchase, I became really good at shopping sales. Every shopping trip would either end with my showing off a new purchase to my family and explaining how I had found something for under $10 (a tank top that was originally $25, but then got reduced to $18, and then got placed on the additional 60% off rack, and I had a 15% off coupon), or a consolation Auntie Anne’s pretzel. There were no other outcomes. After I got to college I started working and earning my own money, and saving a little

more aggressively for my closet, but I still wasn’t there yet. No, I couldn’t regularly drop $600 on a pair of shoes (still can’t), but I could occasionally spend $150, and if that $150 was actually a $600 pair that was 75% off… you see where I’m going with this. I’ve put a lot of research into finding where to buy discount designer clothes. Keep in mind that just because something is heavily discounted, doesn’t mean you need to get it. I’ve made that mistake more than once, and it’s a waste of hard earned money. But, if you’re on the hunt for a black mini skirt or a good pair of wedges, it doesn’t hurt to check out these places first ;). • JULY 2018 O CEANSTATE 19

2018 Chevrolet Equinox

BY RON ST. LAURENT GENERAL MOTORS

redesigned the Chevrolet Equinox this year. Its efforts have really paid off. Engineers shaved about 5 inches and 400 lbs. off the previous Equinox, resulting in a compact SUV that’s smaller on the outside with plenty of room on the inside. Combined with more efficient standard and available engines, shaving off that weight really improved fuel economy. GM measured the standard 1.5 liter turbo engine at 32 mpg -highway. The optional 1.6 liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine gets a truly outstanding 39 mpg EPA highway rating. Kelly Blue Book calls the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox “one of the best looking vehicles in its class,” concluding that “even in a jam-packed field, the Chevy Equinox is one of the best choices you can make.” That is certainly true. Edmunds calls the optional 2.0 turbo, “one of the best engines in the class.” JD Power rated Equinox as the most dependable compact SUV. And for those who like to support their neighbors and buy American whenever possible, the 2018 Chevy Equinox allows you to do it without feeling like you’re sacrificing quality, performance or fuel economy. The base Equinox competes well with foreign rivals in its class. It provides good all-around performance with a well-engineered, comfortable interior and one of the best touchscreen systems in the industry.

Available Models

The 2018 Equinox comes in 4 models, the base L, LS, LT and Premier. The LS is the model most likely to be seen on dealer’s lots. The base L is built to order, so shoppers willing to wait can get available options they want and little that they don’t. The Equinox L offers: • 1.5 liter turbocharged engine (170 horsepower, 203 pound-feet of torque) • 6-speed automatic transmission • 17-inch aluminum wheels • 4-wheel antilock brakes • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system • Traction Control • Front wheel drive • Halogen headlamps • 6-speaker audio system with MyLink 7" diagonal Color Touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, voice-activated radio and phone plus USB port • Split folding rear seats • Keyless entry and ignition • LED daytime running lights • TeenDriver watchdog system • On-Star Navigation with emergency services, remote door unlock, roadside assistance

The LS Model offers all of these plus additional features, including: • Carpet floor mats • Spare tire and jack • Digital compass • Optional all-wheel drive The LT Model adds extras like: • Xenon headlights • Rear privacy glass • 8-way power driver seat with

adjustable lumbar support • Satellite radio • Optional 2.0 liter turbocharged engine (252 horsepower, 260 pound-feet of torque) • Optional 1.6 liter diesel engine (137 horsepower, 240 pound-feet of torque, 39 highway mpg) • Optional Sun and Infotainment package with: • Panoramic sunroof • Upgraded display with 8-inch touchscreen • Multiple USB ports in front and back

• Hands-free liftgate • Perforated leather upholstery • Charging ports for wireless devices

• Optional Confidence and

Convenience package including: • Rear parking sensors, • Power liftgate • Remote engine start • Dual-zone automatic climate control • Heated front seats • Rear cross-traffic alert • Blind-spot monitoring that also detects rapidly approaching cars in the next lane

The Premier trim level includes

all of the features listed above and more, although the panoramic sunroof remains as an option. Additional Premier elements include: • 18-inch wheels • LED headlights and taillights • Foglights

PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING

The standard 1.5 liter turbocharged engine and 1.6 liter turbo diesel deliver good performance for everyday driving. Their emphasis is on maximizing gas mileage, not speed. The 1.6 liter turbo diesel improves the 1.5 gasoline engine’s 32 mpg highway fuel efficiency all the way to 39 highway mpg. The optional 2.0 turbocharged engine combines good gas mileage (29 mpg highway) with a very peppy 252 horsepower output. Thus, Chevrolet offers drivers engine options suited to their needs – fuel economy for everyday driving or speed and power for more challenging conditions. Kelly Blue Book calls the Equinox’s handling “composed” and “confident,” which describes it well.

INTERIOR

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has a roomy, comfortable interior. Seating will provide an enjoyable ride, even on road trips. Stowing space is increased by spacious underfloor storage, significantly increasing what you can haul.

ELECTRONICS

Equinox offers drivers an easy-to-use touchscreen that offers real convenience, mimicking your phone screen (if your phone has the right apps). That means

The Premier offers an optional

Confidence and Convenience II package including: • Automatic high beam control • 360 degree parking camera system • Heated steering wheel • Ventilated front seats • Heated rear (outboard) seats • Safety Alert meter measuring the distance (in time) to the car ahead • Forward collision alert with emergency low-speed braking

Premier’s optional Sun, Sound and Navigation package adds: • 19-inch wheels • Panoramic sunroof • Navigation system • Bose 7-speaker audio system with HD radio

you can zoom in and out of navigation screens. The TeenDriver app will tell you how your teen has been driving the car, so you can make sure they stay safe. The MyLink system also includes Chevy’s At-YourService app, providing information about nearby restaurants, gas station and other purchases you might need on your trip. Is also has satellite radio, a weather app and traffic alerts. CNET puts it on par with some of the best systems available.

CONCLUSION

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is a more than capable American-made compact SUV. It offers drivers strong fuel economy with good engine performance or good fuel economy with great engine performance. Handling feels safe, secure and steady. Drivers will feel confident and comfortable driving this SUV while commuting to work, on shopping trips or on extended road trips. If you’re looking for a compact SUV, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is definitely worthy of strong consideration. The Chevrolet Equinox, along with the entire lineup from Chevrolet, Buick and GMC, is available at Cerrone GM in South Attleboro MA, or online at CerroneGM.com •
