artist profile 1. Tell us about your work. My favorite medium is oil, however, I also dabble in acrylics and enjoy pastels, drawing in ink and colored pencil. I love painting shells, birch trees and fruits/ veggies. There are many other subjects I plan to explore further: horses, elephants, architecture....like all artists, I have thousands of artworks in my head! If I created art 24 hours per day, I'd still not have time to paint all of them!

R O NNA A . PAT E Fine Artist From Johnston, RI

2. Is there a story behind the name of your business? The name of my business is my own name which is advisable for artists. We are our brand so it makes sense from a marketing standpoint, 3. How did you come to be a professional artist/ crafter/designer? I have always loved art and started taking drawing classes after high school. I did a lot of drawings, most of which I gave away to friends and family who admired them. Then, life got in the way of art for a while, but, I found I was feeling stifled without an outlet for my creativity. So about five years ago. I began taking classes again...this time in oil painting, which I'd never tried before. I love it, I love art and I love creating art. 4. Where do you draw your inspiration? I get inspiration from shapes, colors, objects of interest that I see in everyday life. If something catches my eye or intrigues me in some way, that "something" will find a way into my artwork. There is no secret meaning or message behind my artwork. For me, artistry is all about beauty and the pleasure it brings.

5. What’s your favorite item to create? My favorite item to create is whatever I happen to be working on at any given moment! 6. What’s your best seller? I don't have a best seller as yet. I only recently became serious about selling my artwork and opened my Etsy

shop a few months ago. I'm very excited about it and am anxious to see what develops. 7. How long have you been in Rhode Island? I've lived in Rhode Island my entire life! 8. What do you {heart} about Rhode Island? By nature of it's small size, Rhode Island is a place where you can always run into someone that you know. I (heart) the older sections of our state, such as the mill towns, parts of the East Side, and farmlands because they are a testament to our history. 9. Favorite place to take out-of-towners? My favorite places to take out-of-towners would be to one of our great parks, such as Colt State, a trip to one of our fabulous beaches in Newport, the mansions, of course, and definitely a night out to Trinity then dinner at Andino's. 10. Any advice for new/wannabe makers? My advice to anyone who wants to be creative in any way is to do it! You'll never be sorry. Marketing what you create takes effort but I like to think of it as a favor to my art pieces. Once the glorious creative process is done and the piece is finished, the artwork's one and only purpose is to be seen and admired! •

Vanderbilt Grace Hotel rooftop bar

Past the folk singers set up in front of Trinity Church, the Starbucks on Thames that always seems to be mobbed no matter what time of day, and around the corner on Mary St is the historic Vanderbilt Grace Hotel (So classic Newport in terms of design and decor, but did you know that Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt apparently had it built in 1809 for his mistress? He ended up dumping her after his family made him choose between her and his money, but it's still quite the icebreaker while day, or night, drinking anywhere in the vicinity.). I've had a bunch of outstanding lunches in their courtyard during the summer, but their rooftop bar is what most people gush about. The thing is much of what you'll probably come across online these days refers to it as a hidden gem or best kept secret. Yeahhh - it kind of is, and it kind of isn't. See, it's really all about who you talk to. Or add on FB. I mean, as long as I've been blogging about places like Newport, people have been messaging me or commenting about it, urging me to go. And know what? They're not wrong, those people! (For the record, sometimes they are wrong. Pls do not get me started right now about restaurants people have fan girled about, then I go and the food is just...mediocre. Or, for my 40 and under readers, meh.)

Yassss, the views of the harbor (with the Pell Bridge off in the distance) are off the charts impressive. Spectacular even - even if you can't get there for an actual sunset. I was there yesterday during the dinner hour, with a few indivudals who are not easily impressed (That's putting it mildly.) and they were in awe. I tried to capture as best I could with my I-Phone camera, but truthfully, you'll have to go & experience for yourself to fully appreciate. Your best bet, however, is to plan for early-ish and mid week (They open at 4pm Mon thru Fri.) drinkies and small plates since this time of year, the weekends on that roof deck are jamming. So, drape yourself in your finest postmodern prep or boho attire (I spied ppl sporting everything from Free People to Vineyard Vines.), and motor on over. • Patty J. is c hief co ntent c reator at , an d founder of, the award winning lifes tyle blo g PattyJ.c om , whic h s howcas es n o tewo r thy food & d rink , sty le, an d travel (as well as dy nam ic in d ivid uals) with in th e Ocean State and b eyo n d . GOOD BARBECUE in the SERVICE AND ATMOSPHERE

Northeastern U.S. is hard to find. It’s like to trying to find a real New York style bagel anywhere outside of New York. That’s why I’m always excited when I hear about new openings in or around Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In this case, Durk’s Bar-B-Q opened up on Thayer Street in Providence, RI, which is a well known strip of shops or restaurants frequented by locals and Brown University students.

Thayer Street is eclectic in that it is home to old businesses as well as new more modern ones. It showcases a movie theater, eat-in or take-out restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores, and various other shops selling unique clothing or goods. It’s somewhat fitting that Durk’s would open up on Thayer Street, because it is a bit of a mash up itself of old and new as well. It has the tradition of casual counterstyle barbecue combined with the modern atmosphere of a swanky, dimly lit bar and restaurant.

16 OCE A N S TAT E SEPTEMBER 2017

Stepping in to Durk’s off the brightly lit street is a little jarring because it is so dark inside. The only real significant lighting comes from the counter where the food is prepared and some neon lighting towards the back of the restaurant near the bar. Once the eyes adjust, however, it’s easy to make out that there’s more to the restaurant than just the counter. There are tables for a more formal dining experience as well as a full bar in the rear of the restaurant. The hanging menu over the counter helps, but there are paper menus available at the host stand that are easier to navigate. As I wasn’t prepared to eat-in, I opted for take out and received instructions on how to make that happen from the hostess. She handed me a card that essentially had the menu items on it that I was to fill out with quantities of what I wanted. After doing so, I took my card to the counter, handed it to a staff member and they promptly started making my order. The staff asked me some questions about preferences regarding spiciness,

fattiness of certain cuts of meat, and whether I wanted any extra bread. I thought these small customizations really helped to make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted.

FOOD – Perhaps I got a little over-

zealous with my order, but I really did want to try a little bit of almost everything. I ended up ordering brisket, pork ribs, sausage, a pulled pork sandwich, a brisket sandwich, coleslaw, cornbread, and mac and cheese. This provided me with a great sense of what Durk’s has to offer as well as a pretty hefty stomach ache from over-indulging. Needless to say, we had leftovers for days with no regrets.

SIDES – Coleslaw, Mac and Cheese,

and Cornbread – Side dishes are the overlooked portion of many barbecue restaurants and yet, they can truly make or break a meal. Durk’s offers some pretty good side dishes. Their coleslaw is light on the dressing, so it retains it’s crunch and is a nice way to break up some of the fattiness of a lot of the smoked meats.

The macaroni and cheese was pretty basic in that it wasn’t the best I’ve ever had at a barbecue restaurant, but it also wasn’t anywhere near the worst. It was solid and I liked that the macaroni didn’t dry out even after getting it home. The cornbread was definitely a highlight. The circular individual portion wasn’t too dry or undercooked, so it had a nice balance. The best part was the pat of butter on top that also had a drizzle of honey over it. That finishing touch really amped up the cornbread.

RIBS AND SAUSAGE – Any barbecue

place that hasn’t mastered baby back ribs has no business operating, so it’s a good thing Durk’s has a handle on it. Their ribs are tug off the bone tender and very lightly sauced. I thought they did a good job with them overall. The sausage had some really good flavor and a light smokiness. In general, it’s a nice homemade sausage, but I felt the casing could have benefited from a bit more snap. Instead, it was a little chewy, which is either because of the casing itself or simply because the sausage wasn’t grilled up enough after smoking.

BRISKET – Any barbecue restaurant

that features brisket also knows that this one element is the touchstone by which the quality of their food is judged. Durk’s takes their brisket seriously and offers

patrons a choice of lean or fatty slices of brisket. I asked for a little of both and they obliged. Watching one of the chefs slice into the brisket before my very eyes was heavenly. I could see the juices seeping out of the tender meat, which was a very good sign.

SIDES - Slicing BrisketDurk’s

isn’t messing around either when they say fatty or lean. The fatty pieces were very fatty, while the lean pieces were a little bit more my style. In general, I like fatty brisket, but if I had to choose again from Durk’s, I’d go with the lean because it showcases the tender smoky meat a bit better. Overall, the brisket was pretty good and I felt comfortable that if they could make a good brisket, then the rest of the food is in good hands. Man Fuel Food Blog - Durk's Barbecue - Providence, RI - Brisket

RIDURKULOUS AND DIRTY DURK SANDWICHES – Last, but not least,

as a sandwich lover, I had to try a couple of Durk’s sandwiches. Both the chopped beef and pulled pork sandwiches come with pieces of sausage in them. They are also topped with onion, jalapenos and some Durk’s BBQ sauce. The pulled pork tasted tender and heavy, but the onions and bread helped with some of the fattiness. I asked for the jalapenos on the side, but loved them with the pulled pork. The same goes for the chopped beef sandwich, which I thought was excellent. I really enjoyed the caramelized bits of beef combined with the sausage. The onions really went a long way to adding some flavor and breaking up some of the texture as well. My go-to order at Durk’s after trying

everything would be Ridurkulous Sandwich.

another Chopped

Beef

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Durk’s is a good, solid barbecue restaurant. Currently, it’s probably one of the best in Rhode Island, And definitely the best in Providence by a good margin. They do a great job across the board, which means it’s hard to go wrong, so try everything. The chopped beef sandwich was a personal favorite that I would recommend along with some delicious cornbread. Durk’s definitely hits the spot to satisfy when you need a barbecue fix in the Providence, RI area.

DO ES BEING

MINIMALIST

MA KE YO U BO R ING?

now, instead of seeing a collection of bright patterns and contrasting colors, you’ll find a collection of neutrals. Statements come in the form of black and white stripes, subtle polka dotted tights, or (if I’m feeling dangerous) my one leopard printed item (a Karen Millen mini skirt). These days, I tend to spend my money on versatility and quality over “wow factor”. I’m trying to curate a “minimalist” wardrobe. Scrolling through the Revolve website used to feel like “goals”, but these days, it’s started to feel overly trendy… and overly expensive for such trendiness. So instead I buy a cashmere turtleneck on sale in both black and grey, another white button down, those same jeans I love but in the darker wash, etc.

The other weekend, I found myself in a JoAnne’s with my Mom. While out running errands I had agreed to go to the fabric/craft store with her (she sews and quilts) if she came into Ulta with me (I’m obsessed with makeup). I didn’t anticipate doing anything in the store except waiting for her to find what she needed, but as I was lazily walking up and down the aisles of fabric, I came across a print that caught my eye. Becky Freeman is a native Rhode Islander who lives and works in Providence. She uses her blog , Fashion Food Fotos, to share her life tips, experiences, and musings, along with her favorite recipes, outfits, travel, and beauty tips.

This wasn’t just any print. It was a print. An extremely vibrant large multicolored floral pattern that was put on a bright lilac background. It was so me, I couldn’t stop starring at it. Ideas started running through my head: what could I use this for? A skirt? Pants? Throw pillows? To reupholster a chair? As I continued to think about it, I realized something. I didn’t really have a place for this pattern in my life. This pattern wasn’t actually me anymore. It was me circa 2013. Bright patterns that no one else would touch with a 10 foot pole used to be my thing. I loved the idea of taking something that was a challenge to style, and winning that challenge. I wore brightly colored floral pants with pride, knowing that I was pulling. them. off. But if you look at my wardrobe

Even my makeup aims to be as simple as possible. Most days all I wear is a BB tinted moisturizer. When I do more, my favorite lipstick is a Lorac shade aptly titled “Minimalist” that is the exact color of my natural lips. And the most excited I’ve ever been about purchasing a makeup product is when I managed to track down a contour stick that was as subtle as subtle can be (Lancome’s Le Duo in Ivoire). I’ve always aspired to be a bit of a minimalist. I usually dream that having exactly what I need and nothing more would be the ultimate form of stress relief. But now that I’m getting there… I don’t know… part of it feels… boring? Maybe it’s just the rate limiting factor of my income paired with the expensive nature of quality basics, but it feels like I’m wearing the same thing every day. And where’s the fun in that? Has my style become boring?

F URL A STUDDE D STR AP BAG $330

But also, if I love what I’m wearing and feel comfortable and like myself in it, is there any harm in being boring? •

2018 Volvo XC60 Volvo’s been on a roll lately, and now their latest complete redesign is here. It’s the much anticipated 2018 XC60. The outgoing XC60 was Volvo’s top selling vehicle, and the new XC60 should do even better.

climate, Sensus navigation, a 330 watt audio system that is amazing. And available is a 360 surround camera and heads up display with driver info projected right onto the windshield and easy to see. Plus, there’s driver mode settings, and not a lot of clutter and buttons it’s all laid out so simply…and all the driver info you need in the large center display. And of course, it’s a Volvo, so they never skimp on safety….airbags everywhere, automatic braking, city safety collision avoidance, lane departure, rear collision warning—so much to help prevent a crash….and plenty of high strength materials throughout to protect occupants in the event of a crash. This all new Volvo XC60 will provide a wonderful experience every time you drive. Luxury, safety, reliability. Volvo’s done it again.

The new XC60, and then entire lineup of Volvo vehicles are available at Steingold Volvo at 766 Broadway in Pawtucket Rhode Island.

2018 VOLVO XC60 The new XC60 is impressive in so many ways. A couple of years ago, Volvo introduced us to the all new XC90, and this is—the little brother, the XC60, the smaller to mid-size SUV crossover. And once again, the refined Scandanavian design is very easy on the eyes. The 2018 XC60 boasts a lot of the new Volvo stylings, the now recognizable vertical slotted front grill, with the signature Thor’s hammer LED daytime running lights. Stylish lines, a long hood. We tested the top of the line T6 Inscription. It comes with 20-inch tires and a variety of wheels to choose from. It also has a gorgeous panoramic roof, roof rails, plus a power liftgate that also has the hands-free foot-activated feature. The new XC60 is about four and a half inches shorter than the big brother XC90, but it’s about 3 and a half inches longer and 4 inches wider than the previous generation XC60. The new Volvo XC60 is all-wheel drive, 5 passenger and trim levels start with the

T5 Momentum and range up to our test version—the T6 Inscription. And the difference between ‘base to top’ is only around $7000. Plus, the XC60 is available in the T8 trim, which is a plug-in hybrid if

you prefer. This T6 Inscription comes with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbo and supercharged engine that provides over 300 horsepower and it’s an 8 speed automatic with start/stop technology. Of course, the wonderful Scandanavian design and thoughtfulness comes true here in the interior. Take a look, it’s bright, upscale, the driftwood inlays, ginormous touchscreen that is intuitive and easy to use. And it’s plenty roomy and comfortable— which leads us to these amazing seats. They’re like the seats in the XC90 and S90 sedan, precisely created for comfort and safety. They even have a whiplash prevention design. Beautiful leather, memory driver’s seat, They can be heated, ventilated, and come with the front seat extensions and power lumbar. This vehicle is worth it for the seats alone. And there’s plenty of room for 2nd row passengers, even hidden storage under the rear seats. And cargo room—63.3 cubic feet—that’s a lot in this class. In the T6 Inscription, you have 4 zone
