Stavanger

Stavanger – originally a Viking stronghold – is a former European Capital of Culture, and it’s not hard to see why. The city is heaven for culture vultures, boasting an impressive mix of museums, galleries and events celebrating Norway’s rich heritage. Architecture lovers will have plenty to admire: the striking 12th-century cathedral and the historic centre with 170 white wooden homes nestled alongside winding cobbled streets (the largest surviving wooden house settlement in Europe) is a good place to start. There are plenty of shopping opportunities in Øvre Holmegate, known as the ‘colourful street’, where all the houses are painted in different hues. The area is also home to charming cafés and bars, while Stavanger’s appeal for food-lovers continues to be reflected in the freshest of local food served in the restaurants clustered around the small lake at Breiavatnet. The region even boasts two Michelin-starred eateries – impressive for a city of just 130,000. Two incredible viewpoints offer picture-perfect fjordic views. At Kjerag, a giant boulder is wedged in a mountain crevasse, while the iconic Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock, offers one of the country’s most spectacular photo opportunities from above or below.

Bergen

Nestled within seven mountains and seven fjords is beautiful Bergen. It’s a fittingly picturesque setting for Norway’s second-largest city, itself a beguiling combination of natural beauty and cosmopolitan culture. Bergen is probably best known for its UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf area, a collection of well-preserved wooden houses, narrow alleyways and cobbled streets that gives an idea of what life was like back in Hanseatic times when Bergen dominated trade. For a taste of local life with a dash of history, visit the lively Fish Market, which dates back to the 13th century and offers an impressive display of fish, shellfish, fruit, vegetables and handmade crafts. The gourmet delights extend well beyond the fish market; in fact, Bergen has a reputation as an international culinary city and offers the region’s best choice of restaurants, a fabulous café scene and local treats such as the renowned skillingsbolle cinnamon bun. Savour one alongside a coffee as you relax and watch the world go by. Bergen is known as the gateway to the fjords, and there’s no end of natural beauty to marvel at here. To get a bird’s-eye view of it, soar to the top of Mount Fløyen in just a few minutes via the famous Fløibanen funicular for beautiful, wide-ranging vistas.

Olden

Cameras at the ready: for unforgettable scenery, it’s hard to beat Olden. The picturesque village is snuggled in a lush green river valley at the end of Nordfjord. It’s blessed with a beautiful fjordic coastline, towering mountains and the biggest glacier on mainland Europe, Jostedalsbreen. There’s easy access to both the Briksdal and Kjenndalen glaciers, plunging dramatically into the valleys below. Crystal-clear Lake Oldevatnet is set among steep mountains and roaring waterfalls. In a nutshell, it’s Norwegian nature at its finest. For a side of excitement with your views, the newly opened Loen Skylift soars up from the Loen valley to the top of Mount Hoven in a breathtaking five minutes with rugged mountains, sparkling blue lakes and beautiful Jostedalsbreen National Park all around. Down below, a picturesque hiking path from the village winds up to Huaren, which is part of the Auflem mountains. At almost 400m above sea level, it has stunning vistas over Nordfjord and the villages of Olden and Loen below.

Geiranger

The Geirangerfjord region is nature at its eye-popping, heart-stopping, take-your-breath-away best. The small idyllic village and cruise port of Geiranger lies at the head of the famous S-shaped Geirangerfjord. It’s surrounded by spectacular UNESCO-listed scenery: the area is recognised as one of outstanding natural beauty, boasting some of Norway’s longest, deepest, narrowest and most dramatic fjords, not to mention the tumbling waterfalls of Seven Sisters, The Suitor and the Bridal Veil, plus fairy-tale forests and lush green pastures. Take the precipitous Trollstigen mountain road (the Troll’s Path), which weaves through the village connecting to the Flydalsjuvet lookout with its stunning fjord views. The road is an experience in itself with plenty of amazing photo opportunities, but further adrenaline-inducing experiences await at the Geiranger Skywalk at Dalsnibba, a hair-raising 1,500m above sea level. This is Europe’s highest fjord view from a road, so bring your camera (but hold on to it tight!) – the new platform with its glass guardrail opened in 2016 and offers a different way to take in the uninterrupted views of the surrounding fjords and mountains.

Ålesund

Everything about Ålesund is pretty. From its location at the entrance of Geirangerfjord to its unique architecture, it’s the kind of place that sticks with you long after you’ve left. Much of the town centre was devastated by fire in 1904 and rebuilt in Art Nouveau style, and today it’s a well-preserved example of the decorative architectural technique. Immerse yourself in the town’s aesthetics at the Jugendstilsenteret museum, which explores Ålesund’s heritage and the way in which it was rebuilt, while the KUBE art museum showcases regional artists and applied and visual arts. Ålesund is also a lively fishing town and home to one of Norway’s most important traditional fishing harbours – in fact, more than two thirds of the world’s production of klipfish comes from here. A visit to the Mount Aksla lookout offers panoramic views of the town, the surrounding archipelago and the fjords.

Scenic Sailings

Nowhere offers vistas like the Norwegian fjords. Innvikfjorden At 4.5km long, this arm of Nordfjord is small but perfectly formed with forested banks and lush green pastures surrounding the pretty community of Innvik, after which it’s named. Nordfjord As you travel through this 106km-long sea fjord, drink in views of pristine pastures and farms, gleaming glaciers, waterfalls and towering mountains that plunge straight down to the sea. Geirangerfjord Cameras at the ready as you pass through ‘the jewel in the crown’ of the Norwegian fjords. Let unforgettable scenes unfurl along this S-shaped beauty. Among them are the Seven Sisters, the Suitor and the Bridal Veil, three astonishing waterfalls and highlights of the route. Sunnylvsfjorden Be wowed by 26km of craggy cliffs, impressive waterfalls and glassy deep waters before reaching the town of Hellesylt. Don’t miss the historical old farm perched 100m above the water and tucked under an overhanging rock. At its widest, Sunnylvsfjorden is more than 1.5km; at its narrowest, a dramatic 600m. Storfjorden With sweeping waterscapes, soaring peaks and forested slopes, Storfjorden (the Great Fjord) lives up to its name. The wide and peaceful waterway running inland for 110km from the North Sea is a haven for wildlife. Keep a lookout for dolphins and whales in the waters and sea eagles soaring overhead.
