MEDIA ADVISORY For Immediate Release CONTACTS: Dawn Elizabeth Blalock, Public Information Officer, Somalia +254 (0)734 210 102, blalock@un.org Choice Okoro, Head of Communications, Kenya +254 (0)732 500 020, okoroc@un.org VISIT OF THE EMERGENCY RELIEF COORDINATOR TO KENYA AND SOMALIA WHO: Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator WHAT: Mission to Kenya and Somalia WHEN: 01-03 February 2011 The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ms. Valerie Amos, will conduct her first official visit to Kenya and Somalia from 01 to 03 February 2011. During her mission, Ms. Amos will assess the drought conditions in both countries. In Kenya, Ms. Amos will meet senior Government representatives to express appreciation for the Country’s support to humanitarian action, including the hosting of a significant number of refugees for the past two decades. Ms. Amos will also be consulting with humanitarian and development partners from various United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations & Community-Based Organizations, and the donor community on best strategies to promote early action and mitigation for recurrent droughts. Ms. Amos will travel to Somalia to visit Internally Displaced Persons settlements and conduct meetings with authorities, UN Representatives and non-governmental organizations. Ms. Valerie Amos will hold a press conference alongside the Kenya and Somalia UN Humanitarian Coordinators, Aeaneas Chuma and Mark Bowden respectively, on 03 February, 2011 at the Sankara Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi at 10:45am.
