JOIN US ON THE ADVENTURE OUT AND ABOUT!

This is a big year for the Octagon built in the 1960s with passion and dedication, we now need to improve our building to be welcoming, accessible and open for audiences and artists for another 50 years to come. This means our building will be closed during the building work from May 2018 until Autumn 2019. During this period we will have an exciting season of productions, events and activities across the town centre. From our base at the Market Place where our box office and café will be open for business and our theatre groups will be based; to Queens Park, the Albert Halls 2

BOX OFFICE 01204 520661

and Macron Stadium where our productions will take place. Throughout the year we will be celebrating northern voices and sharing brilliant plays with audiences new and old to enjoy alike. From Bolton’s own Jim Cartwright and Les Smith to original version’s of children’s classics adapted to be set in our town – we want to celebrate what makes Bolton great. So even though the building will be out of action this season, the Octagon will continue to make great theatre in Bolton, as it has done for the last 50 years. Roddy Gauld Chief Executive

PRODUCTION SPONSOR

This summer we will transform Queens Park into the extraordinary land of Lilliput from Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. In a huge celebration of Bolton communities we will be working with 150 young people plus Bolton’s Amateur Theatre Societies and local choirs along with a professional cast of actors to bring this classic children’s story to life. Gulliver is a traveller and a teller of some rather tall tales. This one is maybe his tallest yet! Gulliver wants to be a hero in his daughter’s eyes. So he takes her on a journey to a land where he is literally a giant. Travel with Gulliver to the land of Lilliput where war is brewing, trouble is coming and Gulliver finds himself at the centre of it all. Gulliver’s fantastical adventures will be brought to life in the Octagon’s first ever outdoor walkabout theatre experience in the beautiful setting of Bolton’s Queens Park.

Aged 9-21? Do you want to be part of the cast? You don’t need any experience, just enthusiasm, willingness to try new things and commit three weeks of your summer holiday to putting on a production! Places are £150 per participant and the project runs from 6 – 27 August. Find out more at octagonbolton.co.uk/takepart

At the Octagon, we proudly champion new writing all year round. Whilst we are out of the Theatre, we will undertake our most ambitious writers’ project to date.

NEW TAKE BOLTON RESPONSE PLAYS

New Take will offer a diverse group of playwrights the opportunity to respond to our exciting temporary homes. The new short plays will be performed alongside our productions at the Macron Stadium and the Town Hall across the season. It’s a chance for great diverse writers and extraordinary audiences to meet in unexpected places. For some of these playwrights it’ll be the first play they will have ever written! We can’t wait to share these unheard stories with you. Sign up to our e-newsletter at octagonbolton.co.uk to be the first to know when dates and titles have been announced.

NATIONAL OCTAGON PRIZE REVEAL Our annual REVEAL Festival showcases a range of original and new work by talented theatre makers. The Festival brings together a diverse mix of artists and theatre companies to put on a wide-ranging selection of exciting and engaging performances, experiences and events in unusual venues across Bolton and online. REVEAL 2019 line up will be announced soon - see octagonbolton.co.uk/reveal to find out more

The National Octagon Prize is our competition celebrating new and original writing for our stage. Every year we invite submissions from writers with any level of experience which are then reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges chaired by our Artistic Director. This year we are asking writers for A Play in a Room. Take inspiration from the greats like Osborne and Miller who often set their plays in one room: an intense pressure cooker environment where there is no escape for characters or audiences. We will be open to submissions in June 2018. The winning play will be performed in 2019. Visit octagonbolton.co.uk/ newwriting for more info and details of how to submit.
