Father’s Day Drags 2020 Meremere Dragway
Screaming V8’s and smokin tyres! …. HELL YEAH!
I love this day! What an awesome way to spend Father’s Day, catching up with your mates, yarning over the sound of screaming V8’s, watching smoke billowing from squealing tyres and checking out some good old school drag racing! It’s not just about the drag racing here either, the pit area and back field are full with cool old school muscle cars, hot rods and drag cars taking you right back to the golden era when the hill at Meremere was filled with the people, all there to soak up the excitement of screaming V8’s and speed. Wandering around the pit area you could easily mistake it for a hot rod show. It’s easy to see it’s not just me that thinks this day is cool! With all the ups and downs of being locked away with Covid at the time, it was obvious people were just hanging to get out into it again! This day is always massive at Meremere, the excitement in the air just coming up to Father’s Day is like letting the puppies out of a cage! Open to USA and Aussie V8’s only this really is like the old school days on the hill and today was no different. It was awesome to see crowds gathering on top of the hill again and the stands full of people. This event is one of the more popular events in the drag season. As always at Meremere during this time of year, the morning starts chilly and somewhat foggy, but once the sun creeps through the clouds, she’s a good day out in the sun at the track. Some good times were being achieved throughout the day with some cool grudge racing going on as well. Blowers seem to be more and more prevalent these days with some cool set ups rolling up to the start line. The sight of a twin blown Holden ute rolling up in the grid must put a smile on your face, unless you are rolling up beside him anyway! The entertainment is full on, you can either park up and watch the racing or wander the field and check out the cool rides laying about.
Midday brings on the Burger Fuel Burnout session, although only one competitor rolled up for a skid session so that was an easy win, with an amazing display shredding a tyre for the crowd before getting lost in the plume of smoke.
The pits are always busy with lots of tinkering going on to get that extra mile per hour or instant repair jobs to get back out and onto the grid again. As always, the food stalls are cranking out lots of hot goodies. Vendors are selling goodies for the cave or engine parts to treat the rides on Father’s Day as well, so it’s a fantastic event for a day out. This is a day well worth getting in your diary for later this year, it’s an epic day for REV HEADS!
