The famous PALMY SWAP MEET
50 YEARS OF COOL CARS AND SWAPPING
Yep, 50 years this awesome event has been happening now and it’s definitely on the “to do list” of many a hot rod owner.
The Palmerston North Hot Rod Club hold this event every year on the first Saturday of August with the main hall opened up for traders around the perimeter and the centre filled with hot rods and classic cars making for an awesome display to wander around. It is pretty awesome that the club can boast that they still have some of the original members from fifty years ago still helping to run the event. You can imagine there will be some good stories in there! It all kicks off before sunrise with the streets leading into the Manfeild Park Stadium filling with traders waiting to get in and the show cars sneaking in the side gate to enter the hall and set up inside. As you can imagine after this many years, they have got it pretty organised now so everything flows pretty quick when the gates open. Outside the hall around two hundred traders set up with all sorts of automania in the swap meet area. Unlike most meets this event is only for auto parts and associated goodies for the cave, so apart from the compulsory coffee truck to warm the cockles its pretty cool to wander about and see what goodies people have had hidden away. It always cracks me up as to what and how many spare parts most of us have on our parts shelves. Ive always said if we all got together we could probably build another car or two just off our parts shelves. These sorts of swap meets are awesome for clearing that space, finishing a project or just restocking that space! As we do! Haha Right next to the swap meet area is the parking for the spill over of cool hot rods, muscle cars and pretty much anything cool on wheels to roll in. I fully couldn’t count how many cars where in here but it was rows and rows of cool as automobiles to wander around. Being such an iconic event now, people travel from far and wide to get along to this so it really is a full-on car show with a swap meet attached now. The adventure doesn’t just stop there either. After midday when everyone has had a chance to collect some goodies, catch up with mates and check out somewhere around seven hundred cars
