How to have a

great day This guide will show you how have a great day everyday! Many people in society fail to be organised and allow procrastination or menial tasks to distract them from achieving their goals.

These 6 steps will allow you to utilize your day effectively to have a wonderful day.

1. Write out a basic plan for the day

4. Be sensitive to the schedule of others.

Unfortunately, many test-takers make the mistake of not preparing their mind and body in the days leading up to the test.

Make sure

you’re in tip-top shape on test day by checking out these six tips for test taking success.

Octopi_Mag_FA.indd 13

1/12/2014 10:44 am

1 3

Get Up Early If you’ll be getting up earlier than normal on the day of your test, be sure to reset your sleep schedule well in advance. For example, if you’ll have to get up at 8 a.m. on test day, start setting your alarm at that time at least a week in advance. This way, your body will have adjusted to the new schedule. Let’s face it—you don’t want to feel groggy on test day!

Relax In the days before your exam, take some time out to enjoy yourself. Yes, I said it: RELAX! Go see a movie, spend time with friends, or spend a day at the beach. Spending some time enjoying yourself will put you in a better mindset for your exam. Whatever you do— don’t cram. New studies show that cramming pre-test may actually do more harm than good!

Preparation is Key

2

Find out everything you need to know about your testing center a few days prior to the test. Map the location, get detailed directions, and if you live close enough, do a test run. You’ll also want to research what forms of identification you’ll need on the day of the test as well as what is and isn’t allowed in the testing center. Plan on arriving 20 minutes early!

** 14 **

Octopi_Mag_FA.indd 14

1/12/2014 10:44 am

4

Get Packing Gather everything you’ll need for your exam the night before. A few staples we recommend bringing are extra pencils, a timer (your testing center may not have a clock!), water and some healthy snacks. Avoid sugary drinks that will cause you to crash mid-test and be sure to bring snacks that will give you sustenance, such as fruit, string cheese and protein bars.

Sleep While it seems obvious, many students are filled with nerves the night before their test and don’t get as much sleep as they should. Aim for at least 8 hours of shut-eye. Having trouble sleeping? Whatever you do, avoid sleep aids, as these may leave you feeling

6

“hungover” the next morning. Instead, try a natural remedy for insomnia, such as drinking a cup of chamomile tea or a warm glass of milk, both of which have calming properties.

Eat a Brainy Breakfast

5

Even if you’re not in the habit of eating breakfast every morning, it’s important to do so on test day in order to keep up your mental and physical stamina. Consider incorporating “brain foods” that are high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids like eggs, beans, and salmon (to name a few!).

Royal Botanical Gardens The Royal Botanical Gardens is one of the prettiest places in Sydney to visit. The gardens are an amazing place to bring family and friends, with lots of open grass spaces for picnics and ball games. You could also try and spot the eels in the Eel pond at the centre of the gardens, some of them are pretty big. If you are more for going solo to beautiful gardens or like places to relax, the gardens also have some lovely area’s around the edge of the centre, with seats under the shade of trees in a lot places beside the paths. So if you ever fancy taking a book to read there are great spots to sit. The Opera house and Harbour bridge are in site from the centre of the botanical gardens, the closer towards Yurong gate you get, the better the view of the two are.

Hyde Park Above Museum station is another great place for picnics and just relaxing solo or with company. With 7-Eleven and Starbucks just on the main road its nice and easy to grab a coffee with a friend before going to sit somewhere at the park, there a great spaces with tree coverage as well as open patches if you want to lie down and soak up the sun rays. Hyde Park has a great deal to look at, to the south there is the Anzac memorial and pool of reflection. The north of Hyde Park has several monuments, most being apart of the Archibald Fountain, a beautiful ancient mythological water feature.

Bronte Beach If Picnics by the beach are more your thing, then Bronte Beach should be on your ‘go to’ list. Bronte beach has a large open area, where many can run around and play ball games or just wrestle if that’s your thing. Half surrounded by beautiful scenery of tree’s and a few cafes to the side, the open ocean makes it picture perfect. The large children’s playground is a great place to let the kids run wild, with free barbeque area’s accompanied by seats and tables fairly close by. Towards the southern end of the beach are two rock pools, one of the rock pools are man-made and the other, natural. The Natural rock pool is a great spot for the kids to play, not only it is a safer environment for them to swim in but bring along some snorkelling gear and let the kids see everything there is, maybe they’ll spot some little fish.

It’s Easy! All you need is plastic cups smaller paper cups

(shot glass sized) toothpicks food colouring (optional).

1 2 3

Drop the smaller cups into the plastic cups and poke four holes around the plastic cup, slightly above the top of the smaller cup. There should be enough space between the holes, and the top of the shot glass to create a suitable base later for the glasses.

Poke the toothpicks through the holes. This will hold the smaller paper cups in place and prevent them from raising too much.

Push the smaller cup to one side, and slowly fill the gap between the plastic cup and smaller cup with water until the toothpicks prevent them from raising further. Try not to get any water into the smaller cup during this process.

Drop a few drops of food colouring into the water and pop them in the freezer. You can add as much, or as little food colouring as you’d like.

Once the water is frozen, remove the toothpicks from the plastic cups, and carefully fill warm water into the smaller paper cups and run warm water around outside of the plastic cup. try not to get the warm water onto the ice shot glasses.

The shot glasses should pop out. From there, just remove the smaller paper cups and you’re ready to go!

Enjoy your beverage! ** 47 **
