Operation Jihadi Bride

My Covert Mission to Rescue Young Women From ISIS John Carney with Clifford Thurlow A thrilling and highly newsworthy military adventure in the burning rubble of Islamic State.

Ex-British Army Soldier, John Carney, ran a close protection operation in Iraq for oil executives when he was asked by the family of a young Dutch woman to extract her from the collapsing 'Islamic State' in Syria. Hearing first-hand of the shocking living hell of tricked naive young girls, many from the West, trapped, sexually abused and enslaved by ISIS, he knew only one thing - he had to get them out.

John Carney served six years in the Yorkshire Regiment, did two tours in Northern Ireland, was a team leader in Iraq with Aegis Defence Services, and currently organises deradicalisation programmes on the Syrian/Turkish border. To protect his family, the name John C arney is a pseudonym. Names of his family and colleagues have been changed.

Truth to Power 7 Ways to Call Time on B.S. Jess Philips Fearless Labour MP Jess Phillips inspires us to speak out against injustices.

THIS IS A POWERFUL LITTLE BOOK

Speaking truth to power takes courage. Jess Phillips shows you how to identify the problem, form a plan, and to speak out using the exact same tools that those who have been put on a pedestal of being 'brave' have used to deal with the fear, the conflict and let's be honest - the awkwardness that can come from telling your boss, your family, your neighbour that something is bullsh*t. As well as offering inspiration and hope from her own experiences Jess talks to highprofile people on the world stage who have been brave enough to risk everything

Jess Phillips M.P. was first elected as the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley in 2015, before being re-elected in 2017. She was elected chair of the Women's Parliamentary Labour Party in September 2016. Before becoming an MP, Jess worked with victims of domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking, and she continues to speak up on behalf of those who struggle to have their voice heard.

How to Be a Gentlewoman The Art of Soft Power in Hard Times Lotte Jeffs A unique exploration of how to be a successful female in the 21st century. Gentlewoman: A woman who blends old-fashioned values such as courtesy, kindness, and generosity, with a thoroughly modern and open-minded attitude; using her self-confidence to show up, not show off and her optimism to inspire others and build a happier life for herself. Women today are under so much pressure to be everything to everyone: to be cool, smart, fit, thin (but not too thin!), funny (but not bitchy!), a supportive friend, partner and family member. We want to be successful and liked at work, to have opinions about politics, art and literature as well as reality TV and Ariana Grande’s love life. It’s overwhelming. How to be a Gentlewoman presents an antidote to the multi-directional pressures of 21st century life. It cuts through the white noise and offers a compelling strategy for living well and thriving. The book weaves powerful memoir with practical advice (including mastering a power drill and the importance of making your bed every day) and a psychological deep dive into the importance of knowing and liking oneself. This English gentlewoman will teach you that real power comes from within. Rather than ‘killing it’, ‘slaying in your lane’, having to be a ‘girl boss’ or adopting the art of ‘not giving a f**k’, this book will teach us that gentleness has too long been underestimated. The true antidote to our brutal and aggressive world is to listen closely, be attuned and rediscover our soft power. It's not she who shouts the loudest who gets heard, it's she who understands the most that holds our attention. Praise for How to Be a Gentlewoman : ‘This is a brilliant & timely exploration of what it means to be a succesful female in the 21st century’ – Elizabeth Day

The Dark Side of the Mind

True Stories from My Life as a Forensic Psychologist Kerry Daynes An eye-opening insight into the human psyche from a leading forensic psychologist. ‘I’ve been a forensic psychologist for over twenty years, working in prisons, hospitals, courts and police stations, in neighbourhoods and communities just like yours. For those of us who play by the rule book, few things are more fascinating and rankling than those who choose to tear it apart. The stories I’ve chosen to tell here are the ones you probably won’t read about in the papers. Some are heart-breaking; others enraging; some plain weird but what connects them is the insight they give us into the human condition.’

Kerry Daynes has worked with some of the most complex and challenging criminals in prisons and secure hospitals, as well as victims of crime. A large part of her day job is working to reduce the impact of crime on society by delving into the psyche of the men and women convicted of brutal acts of violence, to try to understand the psychological processes behind the criminal act and provide treatment to set them on a path to becoming law-abiding citizens. Welcome to the life of the forensic psychologist in all its frustrating, conflicting and just occasionally life-affirming reality. Drawing on her case files from the frontline, The Dark Side of the Mind offers readers an unforgettable journey into the psychological causes behind some of the most extreme forms of human behaviour, and what the treatment and incarceration of those who transgress says about society.

From 16th century Bavaria to trendy craft lager, an engaging and informative exploration of a classic beverage. Beer has been brewed and drunk for 10,000 years, but those earliest beers (think dark, soupy and sour) would’ve been unrecognisable to modern lager drinkers expecting something bright, effervescent and golden. Despite beer’s history, which is as old as civilisation, lager is a relative newcomer, ostensibly first brewed around 500 years ago, while those pale, lively lagers that we know so well today didn’t arrive until the middle of the 19th century and weren’t widespread until over a hundred years later. In this fascinating book, beer expert Mark Dredge dives into the history of this well-loved drink. Discover: what, exactly, a lager is; how it was first brewed and how it would have tasted; what beer was like before the birth of lager; and what role was played by German monks and kings in the creation of the drink we know so well today. From the importance of 500-year-old purity laws to a scrupulously researched exploration of modern beer gardens (it’s a hard life), Mark has delved deep into the story of the world’s favourite beer. Gender Mosaic

Beyond the myth of the male and female brain Professor Daphna Joel and Luba Vikhanski Influential neuroscientist explains why there is no such thing as a male or female brain and no neural basis for differentiating people based on sex. For generations we’ve been taught that the brains of men and women differ in profound and important ways. According to this myth, the female brain has large communication and emotion centres and is hardwired for empathy. The male brain, on the other hand, has large sex and aggression centres and is hardwired for building systems. This story seems to provide us with a neat biological explanation for much of what we encounter in day-to-day life. It explains why women are perceived as more sensitive and emotional whereas men are seen as more aggressive and sexual; why most teachers are women and most engineers are men. But is it actually true? According to neuroscientist Professor Daphna Joel, it’s not. In The Brain Mosaic she sets out a bold and compelling argument that completely debunks the notion of gendered brains. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of her own studies and the latest scientific evidence, Professor Joel explains that every individual human brain is actually a unique mixture – or mosaic – of ‘male’ and ‘female’ features, and that these features don’t map neatly into two categories. With urgent practical implications for the way we understand the world around us, The Brain Mosaic is a fascinating look at the science of gender – how it works, its history and its future – and a sorely needed investigation into the false basis for many of our most fundamental assumptions.
