Photography Beyond Auto Switch off auto mode and take better, more original photos Chris Gatcum The perfect introduction to creative photography For someone taking their first steps in photography, a camera’s Auto mode can be their greatest ally, handling all of the complexities of the aperture size, shutter speed, white balance and so on. But as liberating as Auto is in these early stages, it can soon be restrictive or, worse, it can become a photographic ‘crutch’ that prevents you from taking control for yourself. Beyond Auto is an easily accessible guide that shows there’s nothing to fear from taking control of your camera. Unlike other beginner books, it doesn’t attempt to explain each and every button, dial and feature on your camera. Instead it concentrates solely on the core concepts of exposure, focus and colour, teaching essential skills that will enable you to enjoy your photography and take better pictures with the minimum of fuss.

Specification h 210mm x w 149mm 144 pages paperback with flaps full colour throughout approx: 25,000 words 120 pictures

• Learn why you should take control – and change the way you see just as much as the way you shoot • Maximise your creativity and learn how to shoot faster, better and with confidence • A great gift for any photographer who wants to make memorable photos

Digital Landscape Photography In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams and the Great Masters Michael Frye Ansel Adams (1902-84) was a pioneer of landscape photography, whose instantly recognisable images widened the boundaries of what the camera and darkroom could achieve. While he is undoubtedly one of the best-loved and best-known visionaries of American art, photographers also recognise him as a pioneer of technique, and one of the great teachers of the craft of photography. This book shows what can be learnt from Adams’ working processes, as well as those of other great landscape masters, and how all of the methods he developed in his darkroom can be applied using a computer or iPad. The craft of Adams’ photography is discussed, and the Zone System is related to the digital age. Sections on light, composition, mood and the darkroom all show what can be achieved today using an understanding of his thinking.
