I think autumn is the best time of year! The weather’s great for riding, the horses are fit, for many it’s the seasonal climax – that particular ride, those last few points, the results of planning and preparing all year. Or if you’re like me your sights are on next year already, in my case, laying in the ground work on a new horse. I’m really looking forward to getting out to more rides next year.
It has been great season so far… somehow cool enough on each of the rides for them to be exceptionally pleasant, but hot enough on non-ride weekends that it still feels like summer, what more can you ask! I have really enjoyed catching up with friends and hearing your ideas for stories… so send them in!
The activity of the board and the various committees seems to be opposite the riding activity. It’s been quiet around the board while riders are busy throughout the summer but as events finish up we look to the yearend tasks, finishing up projects and making plans for next year. The yearend category includes returning those trophies that have been decorating your mantle all year, checking your ride stats and making suggestions for improvements to how the club operates. The banquet committee will need to get its act in gear. And we still don’t have a volunteer to organize the ribbons and trophies! And fall is the time to get back to projects. There’s work on the web site, the membership database, updating forms and a host of other jobs large and small that different committees have in the works. Like maintaining a house, the work is never done it’s simply a question of making improvements faster than things decay or become out of date. It you have a project on your plate why not dust it off and see what you can accomplish before the snow settles in.
Here I have another issue hits your newsstands early! I had a great “problem” putting together this issue, and that was I was running out of space. With so many great rides, and so much turnout at those rides this year, as I started to enter in the results, it became apparent that if I waited until my initially set deadline, I would have no room for articles. Wow, I never thought I would have to worry about that! It is a great feeling. Fortunately, I was able to save some room for very worthy articles, which I hope you enjoy as much as I did. It is a little text heavy, but just means a faster download for those of you still on dialup! And I sincerely apologize if you were waiting for the last moment to submit, I will find room for your articles in the next Pulse! -Sarah Cuthbertson Cuthbertson.sarah@gmail.com
That’s about all that comes to mind. Get out to your favorite rides. Have fun. And stay safe. Doug

The Pulse Autumn 2013
In Memory of Parker By Dessia Miller Parker AES born March 21, 2000 - June 26, 2013
Bred and owned by Dessia Miller of Amberlea Equestrian Services Sire: Hennessy (Cognac by *Bask x Silver Baroness)
Dam: Cryztalgara (Granted by Aladdinn x Cryztal by Czester)
He measured 14.3 hands at his withers, about 13.2 at the base of them (lowest point) and 14.3 at his hip.
I owned Parker's sire, Hennessy and leased his dam, Cryztalgara to breed to him for an athletic show horse, preferable in the English disciplines. As a baby he floated and/or park trotted around the field interspersed with manic racing like many foals do, but he had a real spark that caught your attention. The Lordorsis of the spine started to show up at about 18 months, and with research I discovered that it was a recessive gene that both parents had to carry and pass on in order for the foal to express it. Not that common, but not truly rare, many horses had gone on to be very successful race and show horses. Neither his full sister nor any of his half siblings developed the syndrome, so he was the only one who received both genes. Late in his 4 year old year, I started his ground work in preparation for under saddle training. He was so intense, forward and willing that within 4 month he was being ridden by two more advanced students in preparation to show that spring at the Empire State Spring Show in Syracuse in Saddle Seat classes with Junior riders. By the end of the 2005 season, he was named R18 Reserve Champion SS Equitation 13 & under with Bailey McBride, several local horse show
championships and started his distance career in Competitive Trail Riding. Saddle fitting was always an issue; with hours of assistance from Lynda Townsend, we cobbled together a special pad from odds and ends in her tack room that took us through a couple seasons and to the 2006 Canadian Champion 50 mile horse on a very technical trail and miserable weather conditions. His first 50 mile completion and showing that he could handle negative splits and had loads of heart. I had lost his sire to an aneurysm that summer and cried all the way in to the finish line as he had caught and passed all horses well in front of us in the last loop, not putting one foot wrong. In 2007, we won the first 2 days of Ontario Provincial Championships 3 day Pioneer ride, and second place on day three, winning the R18 Reserve Championship, the Pioneer ride and Provincial Championship. In 2008 we found our "rock" at the Old Dominion 100 and he was out for the rest of the season with a bruised coffin bone. Leading up to the OD, we spent an afternoon with Greg Knowles of the Port Lewis Saddle Fit company creating a very unique correction pad to go under the Specialized Saddle I had purchased which took Parker and his riders through all the rest of his conditioning and competitions. In 2009 we completed our first FEI 1* ride and started our International career. 2010 found us at the Biltmore Challenge turning many heads with his conformation. Our Ontario friends were not surprised that he finished 2nd in the 2* 120 km ride with a respectable time, but amazed quite a few others! From there we completed our first 100 - the Vermont Moonlight in what seemed to me an agonizingly long 17 hours. He was the R18 AHA 50 mile Champion that fall. Working through the FEI *s brought us back to Biltmore in 2011 for the 160 km ride. Had a beautiful ride, 4

finishing middle of the pack in 13:16 hours. That fall Lee Hutten was given the go ahead to race at our home ride. About 4 miles from the finish, Parker decided that they just weren't going fast enough, ditched Lee, did the technical trail on his own, blew past the other front horses and kept on going right on home. I was waiting at the finish line, found out that they had parted company, that Lee was OK and Parker was last seen racing down the road doing over 30 mph! I cursed him, got a ride home, grabbed him out of the stall, rode to the corner where Lee had gotten a ride to, put them back together and sent them back to where they had parted company to finish the ride. Amazingly enough, they completed the 55 mile (plus 10 or so extra) in 4th place in 5:16 hours and still a half hour ahead of the 5th place horse. That ride is still talked about. In 2012, I offered Lee Parker to ride and qualify on at the Biltmore 2*. She was thrilled and went to work helping with his conditioning and preparation. Despite incessant “discussion” of the “plan,” a spill, and an electrolyte imbalance, he finished strong, coming across the line in 3rd place overall (8:54 hours) and 1st in the Junior/Young Rider division. A muscle cramp caused worry for earning completion, but with some TLC and fingers crossed, he passed the final, presented again for BC and was named FEI JYR BC winner too. That qualified them for the NAJYRC with two Canadian girls to compete for Canada in the first full 4* Championship at this event. For once Parker was all with our plan and he and Lee were comfortably traveling mid pack for most of the ride with her team mates ahead of her. Leaving the final hold, she was 20 minutes behind teammate Emma Webb and 10 minutes behind teammate Jessica Yavis. In the hold Jessica and Lee had talked that Jessica's mount, Jahlad was getting tired and if Lee caught up, they would ride together the last loop. Parker went out strong and soon caught up. She slowed down to stay with them, but Parker was not
happy at all trotting that speed, his pulse right up and being cranky. Lee asked the girls if they could pick it up a bit, Jessica asked just how slow could Parker canter happily and they moved up the 10 mph that he decided he could put up with. They were informed that all they were in position to claim team Gold if all managed to pass the final vetting. In a very mature and inspiring manner they discussed just how they were going to cross the finish line as there are no "ties" in FEI. Their decision was to cross the finish line together one arm held high in victory and let the officials decide the placing. That moment still brings tears to my eyes and chokes up many of us. (Lee confessed that she had a horrible time holding Parker back one handed and he was certain that he should be racing the finish!) This was Lee's last year as a Young Rider and she was so thrilled to be a part of the Gold Medal Team, as were Parker and I. 2013 found Parker with a new JYR, Katya Levermann from British Columbia. They rode the Broxton Bridge South East Fundraiser 1*, finishing 4th overall and 1st Junior. The Biltmore Challenge they teamed up with Lee Hutten on I Bee Jazzin to complete the 2* ride in 8:40 to qualify for the NAJYRC together. Parker was perfect for this ride, pacing bang on, no discussions about how fast he wanted to go and a fantastic vet card. He and Katya got along beautifully and were poised to be part of the Canadian Team for the Championships. He was on vacation for a couple weeks when we got home before starting up conditioning for Kentucky. We were hosting a ride here at home and I was to sponsor juniors in their first 25 mile ride ever and was planning on riding Parker's half-sister to do so. The day before the ride I get a panicky call from a first time rider that her horse wasn't able to compete and did I have a horse she could ride, because she really wanted to do this "endurance" thing. I said sure, she could ride Amber Kiera and Parker complied to do the 25 mile “training” 5

ride with me. He set a good pace for the newbies and was a fantastic mentor and leader, completing the ride as if he hadn't done anything at all. Our team vet, Glenn Sinclair was very pleased to see how great he looked and that all was well with us. We had a great ride on June 25th with a friend with no issues. Just after 6:00 on the following morning I went out to check on the horses and feed, they are out 24/7 for the most part. Parker was laying down and didn't get up right away to come over with the others. I was concerned and became even more so when he started rolling and then when he was up was looking at his side and not happy at all. I called my vet and met her at the clinic to get a shot of Buscapan and a pain med to administer. I gave him those and in a very short time he was comfortable and eating grass throughout the morning. About 11:30 he started showing signs of pain and cramping, dropping and rolling. Unfortunately my regular vet could not come, but luckily our back up was available and arrived fairly quickly. More pain meds were administered and she did a rectal exam which revealed nephrosplenic entrapment; basically the large colon migrated up around the spleen, got hooked up over the top of it and trapped in an area that it didn't belong in. We took him to the local surgical clinic with one of my students coming along to help and his father not far behind. The veterinarian confirmed the findings and suggested we try a drug to shrink the spleen and then vigorous exercise to see if the colon could be dislodged. Parker was an amazing patient for all of this and trotted for tag teams of people around the parking lot and then lunged for a further time. Unfortunately this did not work and we were faced with the option of surgery or euthanasia. It was a hard decision for me to make; a very expensive surgery with no guarantees and a lot of unknowns or to end his pain and suffering humanely. A very tearful phone call with my husband helped me to make the difficult decision to take him home to be put down by my vet and buried with his
sire. I called a couple of close friends to let them come say goodbye. It was a long trip home, but Parker came off the trailer calling to all his "girls" to let them know he was back. Shortly after, good friends were there with their back hoe and support. The vet was not far behind. We all got to be with him as the pain returned and he laid down to rest. The drugs were administered and he peacefully left us with memories of a great little horse that touched so many lives with his great heart and incredible spirit. I was very honored to have been his friend and amazed at the dreams he inspired in so many, myself included. Parker's strong points were his heart, his athleticism and his intensity. They could also be his weak points! He loved every minute out on trail, poured his heart out and had incredible reserves. He was a joy to ride as well as a challenge, often you found your heart singing one minute and then cursing his race brain the next. He didn't always look out for himself, not drinking and eating as much as you would like, but was always game in his trot outs, fantastic for the vets and crew - a real pro in his approach to Endurance. Parker was an incredible teacher and mentor to riders and other horses. He was sensitive, kind and patient, teaching riders how to sit quietly and be subtle in their cues, how to ride the "big" trot and looked after beginners while challenging advanced ones. He dared me to dream and took me places I hadn't considered, humbling me with his courage and drive. He touched so many people in so many ways, more than I ever realized until the notes and phone calls of condolence came pouring in. I really miss him. One of my favorite lines from a friend is "If anything, Parker taught people that you don't have to look like everyone else to be a champion. He just knew he wanted to go down that trail and boy, could he!"

Forward, Round or Collection? Kathy Farrokhzad Which shall it be? Do you know the difference, and in a pinch, would you be able to identify it in a moving horse? Better yet, can you feel the difference when you are riding? We use these words all the time. We “frame” our horse, we get him to “round” and we regularly work on “collection”. But often, although we’re sure we are working on something, we don’t really know what to call it. We throw the words around randomly, seeking to describe the feeling we know exists, but not knowing the nuances between the three. These words are not interchangeable. The three terms are distinct in meaning, appearance and feel. Knowing the difference between them helps you to distinguish between the level of engagement your horse is working at.
The dilemma is that regardless of the placement of the head and neck, the back continues to be hollow and the hind end in disengaged. The horse moves on the forehand. The hind legs do not track up to the front footprints, and the front legs stride larger than the hind legs. Often, this body position is held in place by the hands. There is little or no release of the reins; a backward pressure traps the horse’s front end and restricts the hind end to protect the frame. The quickest giveaway to a frame is that the horse falls out of the frame – either farther forward on the forehand, or the head and neck arches up and the back hollows even more. The claim to fame of the frame is that it does not maintain itself without either constant pressure from the hands or momentary “jerks” on the mouth to communicate to the horse that it should keep its posture in place.
The “Frame” An example of “frame” – note the short stride in the hind end, the general Simply put, a horse is “Round” lack of “forward”, the dropped back. “framed up” when it is travelling in a preA horse travels “round” determined outline. There may be the high frame, if there is a certain level of engagement from the hind which essentially means that the neck is higher than the end. The hind legs reach further forward underneath withers, and there may be the level frame, where the the body, and the hind stride length approaches the neck is at the height of the withers. In either case, the same distance as the front legs. Due to this reach, the frame is usually being held in place by rein action (the hind end dips down slightly while the front end levels hands). In comparison to no frame at all, riding in a out or rises slightly higher than the withers. frame might feel more comfortable and easier on both the rider and the horse. 7

A round horse is bearing its weight more on the hind end, freeing up the front end to be more expressive and fluid. The rider’s weight is carried more evenly with a mildly lifted back. A release of the reins allows the horse to stride “forward” toward the contact. There is a better sense of freedom in movement than in the framed up horse. To be round, the horse must be “on the aids.” “Collection” Typically, horses in collection move up and down more than forward, so collection is desired especially in events such as reining, western trail competitions and dressage.
Round – note the deep stepping hind legs, lightly lifted back, and general forward flow to the movement.
The collected horse has developed the strength to tilt the haunches so the hind legs are far underneath the body, and the front end (head and neck included) are at the highest point. The horse moves in an “uphill” manner. Travelling while collected is difficult and requires a sophisticated level of balance, mental/emotional control, and understanding from the horse. Collection is achieved primarily by the seat and legs. The hands are the last to act, and ideally, serve to “catch and recycle” the energy produced by the seat and legs. Let go of both reins, and the horse should stay in “self-carriage” for several strides. To be perfectly honest, most of our horses are rarely, if ever, collected. Much of the time, we are working in a degree of roundness – whether more or less round – rather than in collection. All this talk begs the question:
Why bother? We all want to keep our horses sound and healthy for the long term. Most of us are not interested in shortterm accolades at the expense of our equine friends. Feel It. The round back feels loose, bouncy, rolling, supple. It feels like the horse is having an easy time carrying your weight. He is less on his front legs and more on the haunches. He gives you the impression that he can stop on a dime or turn on a thought. He is forward, active and content. The energy from the hind end easily flows through the shoulders and you notice larger, longer strides, and bouncier, more active gaits. If you have trouble with the sitting trot, (you might be shocked to discover that) you might have even MORE trouble riding the trot of a horse that is using his back. This is because the horse’s natural gaits become 8

amplified when the back moves freely. You’d be better off posting so that you can encourage your horse to keep his soft, active back.
… causes the horse to move on the forehand, taking the brunt of the concussion on the front legs. … can be the culprit behind sore backs and “mystery” lamenesses. The irony is that the horse can appear to be more “comfortable” to ride, in that the movement is smaller and shorter and thus easier for most riders to follow. If you think your horse feels smooth and comfortable, consider whether or not the smooth feeling is caused by the horse locking his back and preventing movement. Your first clue will be in the size of the stride – if it is a short stride, particularly in the hind legs, then the horse in NOT using his back. Is all this worth it? OF COURSE IT IS!
The same is true with the canter – the strides are more exaggerated and you feel more swing in the ride. Be prepared to let your lower back flow with the activity – anything less and you’ll be stifling the horse’s enthusiastic offering. Basically, if you feel the gaits getting bigger, rounder, bouncier and maybe a bit harder to ride, then you know you are on the right track!
In the long run, our primary motivation for selfimprovement in riding is for the sake of the horse’s health. We want horses that live well, staying strong and vigorous long into their old age. And a horse that uses his back is carrying the rider’s weight to his best advantage. ***** Bio: Kathy Farrokhzad is a coach, owner of four wonderful horses, dressage rider and writer of the blog, www.HorseListening.com. A long distance rider of many years ago (who's counting?), she continues to hear the pulse of the trails wherever she goes!
The Tight Back… … feels just that – tight. … restricts the movement of the legs. … creates short, choppy strides that lurch and jerk. … prevents establishment of a good forward-flowing rhythm. 9
